The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

Since the days of mandatory high cost pilot plant testing in 6 ft + 2 ft SAG mills autogenous griding/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG), mill specific energy is now calculated by various empirical formulae and pilot testing carried out in small laboratory mills. Barratt (1989) described a method using Bond Indices than adding a single factor of 1.25 to arrive at the AG/SAG specific energy. In 1991 the Canadians developed the SAGPower Index (SPI), test using 2 kg of material in a 300 mm diameter mill. This test has been further developed by Starkey, Hindstrom and Orser (2006). This test now includes a Bond Ball mill work index test.The Macpherson test is still being offered by some testing facilities. This dry test requires at least 180 kg of material.Morrell (2004) formulated an AG/SAG specific energy generator based on a drop weight index Value (DWi). This DWi value is related to the Ab parameter and the material specific gravity. Morrell reconfigured the BondÆs Third Theory formula to cause extra power requirements to be inputed. This technique incorporates the material specific gravity (SG). The AG/SAG specific energy values produced using this method are susceptible to higher values of crushing and rod mill work indices.This paper offered describes a more simple method to generate AG/SAG specific energies. This programme incorporates Bond work indices, the JKMRC parameter Ab measuring impact breakage and the parameter ta measuring the abrasion rate, then employs a series of efficiency values nominated for each transition size (AG/SAG T80). These efficiency values have been compiled over the years from actual operating plants and documented reports.CITATION:Burgess, D, 2012. Metallic sulfide minerals present in most gold ores, Morila gold ore included, often decompose under typical gold leaching conditions. The reactions and their products consume oxygen and sodium cyanide, consequently competing for oxygen and cyanide used in gold dissolution. The resultant effect is to reduce both the kinetics of gold dissolution and overall extraction efficiencies. The present paper discusses results obtained from plant data analysis and laboratory work investigating the problem of higher than expected consumption of sodium cyanide at Morila Mine Gold Plant. Cyanide consumption at the Morila Mine Gold Plant had been consistently running at 46 per cent higher than the expected value without any corresponding increase in gold recovery. In fact, plant data analysis showed an inverse relationship between cyanide consumption and grind, as well as cyanide consumption and gold recovery. Experimental and plant data analysis indicated that better control of the [CN-]/[O2] ratio is necessary for the efficient use of reagents and achievement of higher gold recoveries. Careful control of this ratio at a minimum of eight enabled the reduction of sodium cyanide consumption by 200 g/t, that is, from 650 g/t to 450 g/t. Coupling these experimental conditions with the addition of lead nitrate at 100 g/t improved the overall gold recovery to 93 per cent compared to the average plant recovery of 90.2 per cent over a six-month period. This improvement was also reflected in the leaching kinetics where 70 per cent gold extraction was achieved after four hours, as compared to 59 per cent in the absence of lead nitrate addition. Also of great importance is the fact that the combination of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gave inferior performance relative to either of the two reagents used separately. This scenario presents an opportunity for excluding hydrogen peroxide, an expensive reagent, and focusing on improving the oxygen addition system to boost dissolved oxygen concentration in the plant.

About 60 persons are admitted to the graduate course every year after passing the entrance examinations. The entire course of studies is free of charge and the universities provide accommodation for the students who need it. The five years of studies are divided into 10 semesters. One semester lasts 15 weeks. Automatics can be studied at three separate faculties. At the University of Mining and Metallurgy, it is offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics and Electronics as well as the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgical Machines (metrology can also be studied there); at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice, the Faculty of Mining offers the course. The educational plans and programmes comprise 3 groups of subjects: common for a given course of studies (foreign languages, political science and the basic technical knowledge) common for the speciality and subjects of diploma courses. The whole time of studies covers about 4400 hours excluding 3 periods of professional training and the physical training. The classes, laboratory classes, seminars and design classes are obligatory and the attendance is strictly checked. Students may extend their knowledge by participating and working in the Science Clubs. The students' work is checked not only during the classes but also by the examinations held at'the end of respective semesters. Those who fail the exams can repeat them only if very important reasons are presented. At the very end of the studies there is a diploma examination together with a discussion on the diploma thesis, written by the student. The successful result entitles the student to recieve the title of "magister inzynier",M.Sc. of his speciality. The graduates, after working for 2 years, can attend another course of studies lasting 2 semesters and called "Postgraduate Course", or start "Doctoral Studies" finished by the defence of a doctor's thesis. In'these cases the expenses are usually covered by the graduates' employers.

Formation of porphyry-style ore deposits starts with the metal extraction from magmas at so-called magmatic-hydrothermal transition (MHT). The processes and compositions at MHT are difficult to study as the record of them is poorly preserved. As the MHT is characterised by massive crystallisation of quartz, including quartz æeyesÆ and veins, their study can elucidate questions related to metal transport and deposition. Quartz grains from the porphyry deposits all over the world (Antapaccay, Peru; Batu Hijao, Indonesia; Climax, USA; Panguna, PNG; Far Southeast porphyry, Philippines; Rio Blanco, Chile; Omsukchan, Russia) were studied by optical, SEM-CL and BSE microscopy, electron microprobe and LA ICPMS. Quartz grains, even within each sample, have different shapes (rounded, egg-shaped, amoeboid or euhedral) and cathodoluminesence (CL) patterns (shape, number and width of bands in CL images). The outer layers of quartz are markedly different, which is unexpected if the grains had formed in the same conditions. Inflections and blurring of CL bands are often structurally associated with fractures that are commonly healed with secondary quartz and associated fluid inclusions. Our results show that quartz æeyesÆ could not crystallise from a silicate melt as normal phenocrysts. It is likely that in situ segregation of residual SiO2- and H2O-rich liquid and its solidification followed by coagulation (eg formation of silica-gel globules) took place in the magma (crystal mush) during MHT. Such globules could remain in a plastic state for a long time even at rather low temperatures. The solidification of globules occurred after bands of different composition had formed and led to fracturing of solidified and inflection of unconsolidated layers. All fluids (liquid and vapour) released from the original silicagel during solidification were trapped as inclusions (aqueous, salt-rich and sulfide). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K,) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and the formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Ongoing, collaborative research between CSIRO's Exploration and Mining and Strata Control Technology has resulted in a better understanding of rock failure mechanisms around longwall extraction. Failure has occurred further ahead of the retreating face than predicted by conventional longwall geomechanics theory. In some cases significant failure has been detected several hundred metres ahead of the face position with demonstrated influences of minor geological discontinuities. Shear, rather than tensile failure has been the predominant failure mechanism in the environments monitored. Validating technologies of microseismic monitoring and new face monitoring techniques have assisted the development of predictive 2D computational modelling tools. The demonstrated 3D consequences of failure has assisted in the ongoing direction of the project to further investigate these effects.

During recent years many investigators have suggested large spacing to burden ratios to improve the fragmentation obtained in blasting. In spite of these suggestions, most operators still use a conventional ratio of 1 to 2. From single hole longitudinal charge tests in laboratory, it is shown that burden controls the fragmentation. The burden for obtaining uniform fragmentation is smaller than the burden to obtain maximum breakage. Tests on two or three holes show that a larger spacing to burden ratio can be used for smaller burdens, but it is not possible for the larger burdens chosen to obtain maximum breakage. By using finite element analysis evidence is presented to show the effect of spacing and burden relationship on blasting results.

In case of NATM, mechanical cutting is desirable in view of the original purpose of not spoiling natural ground. As typical tunnelling machines, there are two (2) kinds available: one is "Full Face Excavator" known as TBM (tunnel boring machine), and the other is "Roadheader" known as Part Face Excavator. By the use of the former, accurate profile cut is made possible, but there is a limit in the shape of a cutting section. By the use of the latter, cutting of various sections is made possible, but in order to cut a section economically and accurately, operators are required to have a high level of skill. In this text, we introduce Automatic Controlled Profile Cutting System (hereafter "ACPC" System) developed as a roadheader.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralized areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado, has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles (1) could have been better utilized to first predict and minimize the environmental problems, and (2) can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

The principles, fields of application and equipment design concepts of several new approaches to continuous vacuum treatments of molten metals and alloys are discussed. Partic- ular attention is paid to the results of pilot plant tests evaluating a launder-in-tube method of 1. continuous production of refined zinc from a zinc-bearing lead produced in the lead splash condenser of the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF), and 2. continuous refining of crude cadmium. The former trials were not sufficiently encouraging to justify consideration of the process for commercial development. The applic- ation to cadmium upgrading gave very promising results; metal of 99.99 per cent purity was produced continuously at pilot scale (120 lb per hour) from crude metal containing 5.0 per cent Pb.

Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite û montmorillonite-kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a CO2-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.

The present paper gives the design of a new HGMS for magnetic separation of sulphides. The main characteristics of this HGMS are using iron-cladding saddle-shaped magnetic coil for instead of the ordinary magnet, and combining reciprocal-linear motion with vibration to actuate the separation box, and the magnetic field intensity is high up to 2T as well. For improving the magnet system design, a modified finite element method is used to calculate the distribution of magnetic field intensity of separation space of the magnetic coil, and accordingly the calculation results the magnetic leakage coefficient can be determined easily, thus designers apart from the empirical way. Esso Australia Ltd. operates a large natural gas producing system in the Gippsland Basin, supplying gas to the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria, the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and several industrial customers. Gas reaches the Longford processing plants from three offshore platforms via a network of large diameter pipelines, which must be protected against the formation of ice-like hydrates. When gas production commenced in 1969, methanol was used to inhibit hydrate formation in the offshore pipelines. However, later investigations showed that the methanol was causing excessive degradation of molecular sieve in the onshore gas-processing plants. (Molecular sieve is used to remove water and H2S from the gas prior to further processing to remove heavy hydrocarbons.)

The energy input requirement to produce the molten slag associated with iron production to the modern Australian blast furnace, is estimated to be 2.OMJ/kg. In converting blast furnace slag to products of higher commercial value, advantage should be taken of this energy content by transporting molten slag from the furnace for beneficiation and processing in the molten state at an "off furnace site". The refined slag melt may then be converted into a variety of products for use in the building and construction industries, e.g. slag cement, slag sand and slag aggregates, insulation wool and various slag ceramic products. Some results of studies into slag melt beneficiation and conversion processes involving both molten and cold granular slag raw material, are presented.

When the original Mount Gunson joint venture, between CSR and United Uranium ceased operations in December 1971, an intensive ex- ploration campaign was launched to prospect for more ore in the Mount Gunson region. This campaign resulted in the discovery of the Cattle Grid deposit. A comprehensive sampling programme proved the existence of 4.6 million tonnes of ore, at a mean grade of 2.4% Cu, calculated at a 1.0% Cu cut-off. The planning and development programme that followed this discovery included not only the mining and metallurgical aspects of the exploration of the deposit, but also the en- vironmental aspects. Preliminary work included data collection with respect to meteorology, soil types, and existing flora and fauna.

Rock bolt installation is generally carried out in two steps. First the hole is drilled and the drill steel is extracted, then the bolt is inserted into the hole and tightened or grouted. With single pass bolting (SPB), however, these two steps can be carried out at the same time. This kind of bolting system has at least three advantages, (1) the time used for the bolt installation could be reduced, (2) the condition of safety for the operators could be improved, and (3) the degree of automation of the rock bolting practice could be increased. The study presented in this paper is concerned with the development of the SPB system. The current state of the system is discussed, and further improvement of the technique is explored.
