In an environment of lower zinc prices, falling revenues and reducing zinc feed grades, Century mine implemented a fast-tracked capital upgrade program in less than 15 months. The program was designed to increase ore milling throughput capacity by 20 per cent and optimise the capacity of the flotation plant to increase zinc recovery by approximately 2.5 per cent whilst maintaining final zinc concentrate grade.A key aspect of this program was minimising capital expenditure by better utilising existing capacity and only adding capacity where absolutely required to address critical processing bottlenecks. By gaining an understanding of plant process bottlenecks and future ore blends, and by carefully selecting appropriate technologies for particular specific flotation applications, maximum return on minimal capital investment was achieved.The close collaborative work achieved between the metallurgy processing department and other operational departments on-site was also critical to the success of this project. This work increased the mining and processing capacity of the mine and port site respectively, such that the full value of the process plant modification could be achieved.Capital payback on this investment was achieved in approximately three and a half months.This case study demonstrates the extra value to a mining business that can be achieved through fully understanding the mining/processing value chain and by careful targeted action to address critical bottlenecks in the processing chain from the mine through to the port site.CITATION:Akroyd, T J, Wynn, R and Costa, C, 2014. "In 2010, two McLanahan RSS14×50 scrubber screens were installed at Fortescue Metals Group’s (Fortescue) Christmas Creek site. By 2015, the trommel (screen) section had effectively reached the end of their serviceable life. This was determined by regular measurement of structural components over the previous 18 months that tracked wear life. At the same time, numerous trials and optimisations had taken place on screen panel design and material composition. During 2015, a new set of trommels were designed, manufactured and installed that incorporated many new features: increased open area to facilitate high throughput, improved wear protection for structural members, simplified trommel panels and realigned discharge ports to reduce wear on exit. Numerous other upgrades have taken place on the drive system, feed chutes, liner and weir configurations and park brake, to name a few. Since 2019, the mine planning team at Olympic Dam has been establishing and maturing a shift from deterministic to probabilistic scheduling techniques. This paper outlines this journey undertaken by the mine planning team, key learnings from implementation and further work required to increase the level of planning maturity. Olympic Dam (OD) is a highly variable, polymetallic orebody with a vertically integrated value chain from operations to final product. The processing plant has a tight set of quality constraints which are managed through timing of stopes from varying parts of the orebody. Value is eroded for the operation when forecasted quality of the mine feed encounters disruptions from unplanned changes to the timing of stope starts. As production has moved from the historic Northern Mining Area into the more geologically complex Southern Mining Area, average stope size has reduced, resulting in increased mining fronts required to meet production targets. This has created a problem of increased schedule complexity and difficulties in identifying and communicating resource priorities within a large set of individual stope critical paths. The problem was approached by considering each stope as an individual project constructed by teams working across multiple projects at any one time. The operation could then be considered a multi-project environment with shared resources and enables the application of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) to the mine plan. Key to CCPM is the addition of time buffers to protect the critical path of a project form upstream or downstream processes. Implementation of time buffers protects the stope start date against compliance to plan variance. The monitoring of each time buffer consumption, as a proportion of total construction activities completed enables proactive prioritisation of resources. This resulted in an increase in the number of stopes starting in accordance with the mine plan, simplified communication of priorities to all levels of the operation, increased compliance to plan and a clear measure of schedule risk during planning routines.

The crystal chemistry of carbonate in Ca apatites, including Na-free and Na-bearing hydroxylapatite (CHAP) and Na-bearing fluorapatite (CFAP) and chlorapatite (CCLAP), has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure, using crystals synthesised from carbonate-rich melts at 1 GPa, 1400 - 1000¦C. The carbonate ion substitutes for both the X (OH, F, Cl) anion species in the apatite channel (type A carbonate) and the phosphate group (type B carbonate). The type A carbonate ion is oriented in the channel with two oxygen atoms close to the c-axis, and the type B carbonate ion is located close to the sloping faces of the substituted phosphate tetrahedron, with details varying with composition series. Sodium promotes the uptake of type B carbonate and also has a profound effect on FTIR spectra. Crystal compositions correspond approximately to the substitution formula Ca10-(y+z)Nay z[(PO4)6-(y+2z)(CO3)y+2z][X2-2x(CO3)x], with x + y up to 1.0 and z + 0.0 for CHAP, x + y + 4z + 0.4 for CCLAP, and x + y + 2z + 0.1 for CFAP, for equivalent conditions of synthesis. The sodium cation and A and B carbonate ion defects are locally coupled in all three composition series to facilitate charge compensation and minimise the effects of spatial accommodation. Synthetic Na-bearing type A-B CHAP with x + y + 0.5 has a similar chemical composition and FTIR spectrum to biological apatite.

"In a climate characterised by an ever increasing focus on cost reduction and maximising the utilisation of existing assets and infrastructure, understanding the uncertainty associated with alternative investment and operational choices becomes paramount to minimising the risk of making an ineffective decision. To assist in this process, TSG Consulting has developed an analytic framework to capture the underlying complexity of a mineral supply chain, and then quantify the impact of the uncertainty associated with the key drivers of business productivity. The technical basis of this approach follows three distinct steps: analyse the current system and identify the major factors that drive value build detailed models that can measure the response of the system to potential changes in the factors identified quantify the sensitivity of financial and capacity forecasts to these factors.Each of the above steps draws on a different area from the field of applied analytics, namely: data analytics dynamic modelling and designed experimentation meta-modelling and optimisation.Following the three-step approach described above ensures a rigorous modelling and analysis process is executed to support strategic mine planning decisions. The approach is equally applicable to the analysis of fully integrated system supply chains (pit-to-port), the evaluation of incremental capital investments to targeted areas of a supply chain, or when considering revisions to the operating philosophy of a system in the short term. The basis of each of the three analytic steps is explored in detail in this paper. The current practice of magnetite ore agglomeration involves high temperature oxidation roasting (typically at 1200–1350°C) of magnetite to hematite phase in order to improve the strength and reducibility of pellets. The requirement to pre-oxidise the magnetite before introduction to an ironmaking plant increases the CO2 emissions generated during the ironmaking process. In our previous papers, a novel, alternative agglomeration route for magnetite ores was presented where magnetite was converted to a reducible CaFe3O5 (CWF) phase through the addition of lime to produce a Lime-Magnetite Pellet (LMP) feedstock that can be directly charged to ironmaking units. The LMP process eliminates the magnetite oxidation stage, thereby reducing the CO2 emission during ironmaking. The concept was tested by thermodynamic calculations, high temperature experiments and scaled-down pilot scale test work. In this paper, larger scale synthesis of halfstoichiometric LMPs (1 mole of Fe3O4 and ½ mole of CaCO3) were prepared using a balling drum, followed by overnight drying at 110°C and induration at 1050°C for two hours. The LMPs were analysed using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope techniques for phase and microstructure characterisation. The LMPs were found to have 14–15 wt. per cent of CWF phase when indurated under a CO2/CO ratio of 8.5:1. Pilot scale testing of the LMPs was conducted following ISO standard test procedures. The test results indicated the LMP’s had a Reducibility Index (RI) of over 91 per cent, a Tumbler Index (TI) of 87 per cent and a Reduction Degradation Index (RDI) of 4.6 per cent. The results indicate LMPs may be useful as an alternative feedstock to ironmaking processes that would result in lower overall CO2 emissions.

Based on the stiffness theory, the stiffness difference and energy supply of surrounding rocks are important inducing factors for strain burst. However, due to the lack of multi-level low stiffness testing machine, there are few experimental studies on rock failure mechanisms under the influence of loading stiffness. This paper introduced a self-developed rock testing system with changeable stiffness. The main testing machine of this system is a combined structure of inner and outer frame. The change in the loading stiffness is achieved by using a stiffness servo control system to control the energy accumulation in the inner frame. The tests of the sandstone specimens under three different loading stiffnesses in the testing system showed that the loading stiffness did not significantly affect either the uniaxial compressive strength or the Young’s modulus of the rock. However, the post-peak stress-strain curve of the rock became smoother and steeper when the loading stiffness was decreased, and the stress drop rate increased. It is shown that the stress drop rate had a power function correlation with the loading stiffness. After the peak load, the inner frame of the testing system rebounded several times at high speeds. The magnitude of the instantaneous rebound speed and the rebound duration increased with the decrease of loading stiffness. Both the mean rebound velocity and the total rebound deformation had power function correlations with the loading stiffness. The loading stiffness has limited effect on the energy storage and energy dissipation characteristics of the specimen, while the released energy of the testing machine increases as the loading stiffness decreases, which is the key factor affecting the failure mode of the specimen. According to the test results, a rock burst mechanical model considering the stiffness is established, and the energy supply mechanism of rock burst is quantitatively explained.

Vertical flow systems (SAPS, vertical flow wetlands) are increasingly used for passive treatment of mine drainage that is net acid. Data on 30 systems in eastern US show that well designed systems typically add about 40 g/d/m2 of alkalinity to influent net acid water. If they are designed with a conservative loading rate of 25 g/d/m2 and carefully constructed, they produce net alkaline water. Alkalinity added depends on influent acidity, Fe, pH, and retention time, and ranges widely, from 7 to 484 mg/L, so this is not a useful design criterion. Some waters may benefit from retention times longer than the conventional 12 - 16 hours, but the design must be partly based on cost-benefit considerations. Systems with fine limestone added to the compost layer perform better than average, perhaps to an alkalinity generation rate of 80 g/m2/d. A variety of problems are noted in the 30 systems and others reported in the literature. Systems with high influent Fe (> ~75 mg/L, varying with pH) tend to gradually decrease in flow rate because of precipitation and settling of Fe hydroxides on top of the compost layer. Some high-Fe systems precipitate Fe in the limestone layer, suggesting inadequate compost thickness, or short-circuiting through thin spots. Systems with Al exceeding about 10 mg/L tend to plug because of Al hydroxide precipitation in the limestone layer. Flushing only removes a small part of this precipitate, but can extend life. Some systems are ineffective because of failure of the inflow system. Some systems are uneconomic because they are oversized. A continuing program of inspection and maintenance is necessary for long-term performance.

This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. Coalmines, like any other mine, generally involve the classic three-staged approach to mining studies; namely concept, pre-feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility studies (Cusworth, 2012). Subsequent to these studies, and in instances parallel to these studies, the commitment to an environmental impact statement (EIS) is made in order to secure both state and federal development consent. In recent times, the sentiment to both mining and coal is changing whereby the traditional approaches to mine planning and economic evaluation is complicated by evolving environmental legislation, expectations and time frames. It is all too common to take shortcuts in the development of projects in order to create the perception of cost savings and expediting the delivery timeline. Atkins (2016) points out that: boards of so many small to mid-tier mining companies, and a few majors, focus on relentless project delivery too early in the project process, with so little time and effort applied to risk analysis and option development. Unforeseen risks can cost any timeline or budget far more than the effort required assessing and mitigating these. Detailed geochemical analysis of cored and non-cored drill hole data was used to characterise and model the Cenozoic detrital valleys of several deposits within the southern Pilbara region, Western Australia. The purpose of this modelling was to better characterise and understand the relationships between the various geotechnical units comprising mixtures of rock and soil for the purposes of slope stability and depressurisation studies.This paper presents data from several valleys where geological, geomorphological and climatic processes have resulted in the deposition of heterogeneous detrital rock and soil sequences. Seven primary detrital units are recognised as occurring within all the valleys studied, suggesting that the geological processes involved in the erosion and deposition of the units were widespread. Geochemical assessment of cored and non-cored data suggests correlatable geochemical signatures can be recognised for each of the units; however, local variability in the groundwater history of individual valleys is demonstrated by late-stage carbonate precipitation recognised both in the core and through the geochemical signatures, which has resulted in alteration of the parent rock/soil material. This paper discusses how the carbonate alteration may lead to improvements in rock/soil mass strength of a clay unit by comparing laboratory strength test samples of the same parent material with varying degrees of precipitate alteration to those with no discernible carbonate alteration. Following from this, correlations with geochemical assay results have been derived, whereby zones of more favourable strength conditions may be modelled through assessing areas of analogous geochemistry.The paper demonstrates how geochemical assessment can lead to improved geotechnical and hydrological modelling for a detrital valley system without the need for significant coring and laboratory testing. The challenges of increasingly scarce water resources and the risk of dam failures has seen the mining industry turn to sustainable tailings management solutions such as dewatering and dry stacking. Filtering tailings has been seen in the past as a cost-prohibitive process for larger throughput mines. However, as larger pressure filters are developed, the economic case for filtered tailings has gained traction.Focus has largely been placed on the correct design and operation of the filters. It is critical, however, that the material handling portion of the disposal system is also properly designed and operated. Thorough testing at laboratory and pilot scale to determine the conveying properties of the filtered material needs to be conducted. This testing will insure the material handling system meets the important availability needs of the mine even during periods of variability in the upstream processes and mine plan.The control system must also be robust and flexible in design to compensate for this upstream process variability. Evolution’s Mount Rawdon Operation (MRO) produces gold and silver through open pit mining methods. The mining operations are scheduled to be completed in FY24 (Financial Year 2024), after which low-grade stockpiles will be processed until the end of FY27. As part of MRO’s Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan (PRCP), RGS Environmental Consultants (RGS) and Deswik were engaged to develop the final landform surface and a whole of site probabilistic water balance/water quality (WB/WQ) model to evaluate the viability of several closure options with respect to water quality in the various site water storages, particularly the final void which will form a pit lake. This case study details the closure option which included (amongst other things) covering the final landforms and directing water toward or away from the final void post closure. Closure and rehabilitation for MRO had previously been planned and evaluated on a ‘domain’ basis. Furthermore, the rehabilitation plans and final water management plans for the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), Waste Rock Storage Facility (WRSF) and other domains were not coordinated, possibly resulting in competitive rehabilitation material requirements at the commencement of closure activities. An assumption was that a legacy non-acid forming (NAF) stockpile would provide sufficient material to both supplement ex-pit material for the construction of the TSF embankment raises and to complete all closure activities, but the volumes available and the volumes required to complete the closure activities had not been quantified.

"The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan. The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.

The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. "Large-scale mine reclamation has taken place recently in response to the implementation of mining regulations in China. Effective monitoring of the progress of reclaimed land is a critical procedure to assess the quality of reclamation program and to ensure that mining enterprises fulfill their reclamation responsibilities. The present paper reports a preliminary study that examines the situation of mine land reclamation monitoring. Based on the monitoring, some general requirements for mined land reclamation have been proposed, including: the monitoring should be systematic and comprehensive the monitoring should be adapted to specific local conditions the monitoring should be reasonably optimised via scientific methods and technology the monitoring should stick to a variety of national technical criteria.The aim of land reclamation monitoring is to evaluate changes of critical indicators closely reflecting the development trend of the reclaimed mined land, to develop or improve the criteria and technical parameters specific to the site, and to prevent secondary environmental degradation. Based on these requirements and aim, the monitoring should cover the progress of reclamation, establishment of vegetation and plant community development; and recovery of land and water quality in the reclamation area. If you were reading this article in a newspaper or similar in the 1800s, you would know that the world was firmly in the grip of the Industrial Revolution. You might have been one of the families that decided that an agriculturally based existence was no longer for you, and that the promise of a factory job was more appealing and more secure. And it was. Financially at least. Not so much from a workplace safety perspective.
