The Effluent Treatment System at Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) was commissioned in December, 1991 and has operated satisfactorily, ensuring that aqueous discharges from PMEZ comply with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Act. The system treats both spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant, and acidic liquor generated in the gas cleaning section of the Sulphuric Acid Plant. The spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant are collected in a large catchment pond. The pond liquor, after partial neutralisation with sodium hydroxide to pH 4, and removal of suspended solids, is preferentially recycled to the Zinc Plant, for example, for washing of residues. Liquor which cannot be recycled, is treated in the Lime Neutralisation Section. The other input to the Lime Neutralisation Section is the acidic liquor from the Sulphuric Acid Plant from which mercury has been removed by contact with aluminium pellets in a fluidised column. In the Lime Neutralisation Section, the liquors are blended and neutralised to pH 10 by the addition of slaked lime. The heavy metals and most of the fluorine are precipitated. The precipitated solids are removed in a thickener with part of the thickener underflow being filtered. Most of the thickener underflow is recycled to generate solids that settle rapidly and filter well. The filter cake is returned to the Zinc Plant for the recovery of contained heavy metals while the thickener overflow is discharged to the Derwent River.

Safe work Australia (SWA) has a number of proposed amendments to existing Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) values that may dramatically change how mining workplaces using personal gas monitoring instruments will operate. In consultation with leading gas monitor manufacturers and distributors, an assessment of common Australian alarm settings values and analysis of potential frequency of increased alarm likelihoods has been conducted. This assessment explores the relationships between current monitoring practices, using instruments as health and not just safety tools and identify what will be needed to minimise worker ‘alarm fatigue’ and for common tasks to continue safely. This paper provides the necessary information to aid industry and hygienists to be ‘future ready’ given the likely impact that order of magnitude reductions in time weighted average (TWA) values for NO2, SO2, H2S and other common gases will have on current working practices. Reductions to gas alarm values will provide significant challenges to existing work methods and will require, practical application of the pending future values. Improvements and awareness of instrument capabilities by safety and hygiene professionals will better utilise gas monitors real-time data monitoring capacity and no longer be just ‘safe or not-safe’ instruments. The presentation seeks to promote the practical steps required in setting alarms based on risk consequence and likelihood, increase general awareness of the tools and data available in modern instruments and will enable industry professionals to better manage the challenges of any potential future changes.

The earliest suggestions that some metallic ore deposits might have resulted from seafloor volcanic exhalation seem to have been those of Elie de Beaumont in 1847 and Henry de la Beche in 1851. In 1885 Tinoco, and Bouglise and Cumenge, independently investigating-.the manto copper deposits of the Boleo district of Baja California, proposed that these had formed on the seafloor by precipitation from "hydrothermal submarine emanations". Some twenty years later the Japanese geologists Kukuchi and Tsujimoto (1904) put forward the idea that the Kuroko ore- bodies were seafloor volcanic sinter deposits and in 1919 this was re-affirmed by Ohashi. In 1909 the English geologists Thomas and MacAllister postulated a similar origin for some of the gold deposits of Mount Morgan in Queensland. Between the wars the great European economic geologists Niggli and Schneiderhohn both clearly recognized a class of seafloor hydrothermal deposits. The idea rose again immediately after the Second World War in a very clear statement by Hegeman in 1948, which was followed by contributions by Ehrenberg and Kraume and their co-workers on the submarine volcanic origin of the Meggen and Rammelsberg orebodies in 1954 and 1955 respectively. In 1955 the present writer, quite unaware of early or contemporary work on volcanic exhalative ore deposits, proposed a volcanic sedimentary/diagenetic origin for the stratiform base metal ores of SE Australia. In doing so the writer emphasized the probable importance of island arc volcanism, suggested that some "metallogenetic regions" of ancient terrains were in fact old island arc systems, that the composition of the ores might be related to the composition of the associated volcanic rocks and that such ores would be tied to volcanic stratigraphy. Ideas on relations between volcanism and stratiform ore genesis have thus been evolving over.a period of some 140 years and, beginning with the observations on Baja California in 1882, work round the rim of the Pacific has made an important contribution over a period of more than 100 years.

Air leakage through rock fractures in coal mining is a major cause of coal spontaneous combustion. In order to overcome the deficiency of the existing fire control technology and prevent coal spontaneous combustion by isolating coal from oxygen, the article proposes a novel technology of inorganic solidified foam (ISF) with high expansion to fill fractures effectively. ISF consists of fly ash, cement, setting accelerator, redispersible polymer powder, water and aqueous foam. For preparing homogeneous and stable ISF, a preparation system with a pore type foam generator, a mixer device installed with a hollow shaft and helical blades, air compressor, slush pump and monitoring instruments was developed, and the working principles of key devices were elucidated. Based on a series of experiments on the different ratios of each component material and technological parameters of the preparation system, ISF with a foam expansion ratio of 8~10 and dry density of 250–400 kg/m3 was prepared. The relationship between elastic compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and density was summarised. Based on the injection experiment for fracture of loose coal pile with high temperature, the characteristics of sealing air leakage, compressive strength, thermal insulation, flow and cooling of ISF in the fresh state were investigated, indicating that ISF can effectively cut off the air leakage and cover the coal sample to reduce the temperature in the earlier stage, and ISF can remain stable and not crack. The ISF was applied to Luwa coalmine to seal small coal pillar pressure fractures and loose coal fractures in goaf. Silicon is a vital element in many products today, such as electronic components, solar devices, high-quality alloys, and many others. The growing global demand highlights the need for the development of sustainable production methods to meet this demand as an alternative to the current carbothermic reduction, submerged arc furnace (SAF) based process. An alternative to this is the aluminothermic reduction of quartz in a CaO-SiO2 slag, which not only reduces direct carbon dioxide emissions but also promotes the utilisation of secondary raw materials such as quartz fines, aluminium dross and scrap as well as secondary alumina (SA) from dross recycling. In the current study, the effects of SA and CaF2 additions to slag on the resulting metal composition and metal yield were explored. Results were compared with thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.1. Experimental results show that, in agreement with thermodynamic simulations, the silicon content of the alloy is increased, while the Ca is decreased for starting slags where CaO-SiO2 is partly replaced by CaF2. Similarly, the addition of SA to the initial slag results in an alloy with a higher silicon content.

Technology adoption in the mining industry has been steadily increasing over the past decade, driven by the need to improve operational efficiency, safety, sustainability, and profitability. As mining companies wish to implement solutions to improve mining safety and productivity, various technologies are being integrated into mining operations to enhance processes, reduce risks, and optimise resource utilisation. Adoption of new technologies such as autonomous trucks requires a strong focus on foundational operational technology (OT) and a systems-thinking approach. OT support is critical however, OT is traditionally not considered or integrated into standard maintenance activities. Consequently, sourcing and applying service support to OT systems in real-time has posed significant challenges to date. Neglecting the monitoring and upkeep of these operational technologies and equipment can lead to a host of adverse consequences. Operating instability becomes more prevalent, necessitating reactive measures, and the vulnerability to cybersecurity threats increases significantly. To address OT monitoring and maintenance challenges, a systems wide mindset and remote support discipline must be utilised. Remote operations support refers to real-time, 24/7 monitoring, control and support of site OT: network, production systems, maintenance systems, enterprise systems and mobile and fixed plant through a single interface remote from site. The presence of a disciplined team, grounded in a systems-oriented approach, is of the utmost importance to remote monitoring, given the intricate interdependencies of OT systems. The ability to understand the relationships among multiple systems, coupled with the capacity to distinguish between symptoms and root causes, assumes a pivotal role in operations. Through diligent monitoring and the astute understanding of system thresholds, remote operations support can actively identify and alleviate constraints, in turn, serving as the enabler for transformative advancements in technology output.

Carbothermic reduction of sulphide minerals for achieving a selective separation of metallic species from complex minerals has been discussed by considering the prevailing oxygen potential during the course of reaction. Construction of univariant plots for the reduction of sulphides with carbon monoxide gas or carbon and in the presence of either lime or anhydrous calcium sulphate is the key feature of this work. The theoretical calculations for univariants in the Cu-Fe-S-O system indicated a preferential separation of metallic copper and iron by imposing a chemical potential. This is evident from a logarithmic plot of sulphur dioxide partial pressure against reciprocal temperature. The results are compared with empirical data for the reduction equilibrium. The reduction behaviour of the constituent sulphides are also discussed together with the experimental results and theoretically predicted phase stability diagrams.

MineSense Technologies Ltd. is revolutionising grade control at mining operations by installing ShovelSense® sensors on buckets that measure the grade of every load before it is dumped in the truck. This allows the mine to exploit grade variations at a resolution that was not available before, reducing the amount of ore loss to the waste stream and removing waste from material destined for processing. These changes dramatically improve the profitability and sustainability of mining operations. ShovelSense relies on X-ray fluorescence analysis of the rocks as they flow in the bucket and is integrated with fleet management to direct the trucks to the right destination. Lab simulations of ShovelSense measurements on porphyry copper ores show correlations between predictions and lab measurements at 0.98 r-squared with a coefficient of variation of 10 per cent. Visualisation of copper grade predictions in three dimensions shows a reasonable match with the dig plan, but with local changes in the ore-waste contact due to more accurate contact identification, related to blast movement and other mining factors. Correct delineation of these contacts ensures ore trucks are not sent to the waste dump and waste trucks are diverted from the crusher, creating enormous value for the operation and the environment.

There has been significant growth in mining and energy exploration in South Australia, which has identified new major potential opportunities. This sector generates significant economic value to the state and their support remains a priority for the state government. The delivery of this economic and associated community value to the state is dependent on the mining and energy sector being able to access reliable water supplies.The vast majority of priority areas for the mining and energy sectors are located in areas that have traditionally been of low priority from a water-use perspective and hence, data and knowledge levels are generally low.Recent studies have identified a potential increase in demand for water in the mining and energy sector for potential developments from approximately 40 GL to over 170 GL over the next ten years. The studies found that water and water infrastructure is the second highest proportion of planned infrastructure capital investment by resource companies. The South Australian GovernmentÆs Plan for Accelerating Exploration (PACE) initiative (PACE 2020), also identifies addressing the issues of location, use and management of South AustraliaÆs water resources as a key priority for the growth of the mining and energy sector.The Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) has developed the facilitating long-term outback water solution (FLOWS) initiative. DEWNR is currently undertaking a suite of programs to provide groundwater information at the regional scale to better target water supply options for mining and energy developments and community water supplies.The Goyder Institute for Water Research has leveraged significant research investment of $3 M to develop methodologies to interpret airborne geophysics to map groundwater sources.The FLOWS Initiative will provide key content for the PACE Water Program and will also assist in the development of water supplies for remote far north communities by identifying alternate groundwater sources to improve water supply security.This paper will discuss how developing an appropriate science and knowledge base will encourage and secure development where appropriate, enable prudent decision-making and policies regarding water allocation, accounting and licensing, whilst ensuring the protection of environmental assets.CITATION:Power, N and Costar, A D, 2013. "Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. The ZA-27 zinc base alloy was poured into cylindrical moulds and solidified under different conditions ie normal freezing and unidirectional freezing. In addition a cylindrical ingot with rheocast material was obtained by stopping the stirring action and, at a specific solid fraction, gravity casting it into a graphite mould. It was observed that the material obtained under normal freezing conditions is likely to present both segregation and inverted pipe. In contrast, the unidirectional solidified and the rheocast cylinders showed the absence of inverted pipe. The segregation pattern was quite irregular in the rheocast ingot while such segregation was more uniform in the unidirectional solidified cylinder. By virtue of these observations, the inverted pipe formation may be ascribed to the interdendritic flow, while the irregular segregation pattern in the rheocast ingot may be attributed to an irregular distribution of the liquid and solid fraction along such a cylinder.

Microstructure of CaO-SiO2-based glassy samples with various Al2O3 contents were examined quantitatively by Raman spectroscopy and 27Al MAS NMR (magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance). Sequence of multiple cluster models of aluminosilicate system modified with Ca2+ and Na+ cations have been designed, and Raman spectra simulation were carried out after geometric optimisation by quantum chemistry (QC) ab initio calculation. The functional relationship between Raman scattering cross-section (RSCS) and stress index of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron (SIT) for aluminosilicates was established, which was applied to the calibration of experimental Raman spectra. Some five-fold coordinated aluminium (AlV, around 5 per cent) and less than 2 per cent sixfold coordinated aluminium (AlVI) were detected by 27Al MAS NMR, while most of aluminium remained in tetrahedral sites (AlIV). The hyperfine quantitative results of Raman spectroscopy and NMR showed a gradually production of AlIV with addition of Al2O3, along with the significant adjustment of Qi species distribution, in which Q1, Q2 reduced and fully polymerised Q4 increased while Q3 showed a non-monotonic variation and obtained the maximum at Al2O3 = 18 mol per cent. Furthermore, the effects of aluminium to bridging oxygen bond types (T-Ob, T = Si, Al) and the degree of polymerisation were also discussed in detail. The evolution of microstructure and its correlation with the viscosity of CaO-SiO2 based melts, incorporating various Al2O3 additives, have been investigated by employing in situ high temperature Raman spectroscopy at 1823 K and viscosity model. These structural features related to composition are essential theoretic foundation to understand their properties. The average Qi evolution culminates in an overall enhancement of the degree of polymerisation. Viscosity was determined utilising a rigorously selected viscosity model, elucidating a consistent upward trajectory as Al2O3 content is incrementally added. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the relationship between viscosity and structure was conducted based on the average number of non-bridging oxygen per network-forming tetrahedron (NBO/T). It provides valuable insights for examining and predicting viscosity behaviour of aluminosilicate systems.

The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. This study analysed the fracture characteristics and movement process of goaf roofs under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, based on the engineering conditions of Tangshan Mine F5001 gangue backfilled working face. The inclined borehole detection method is adopted to conduct long-term and fixed-point detection of the roof stability. The distribution characteristics of mining-induced cracks in the roof are described quantitatively based on the crack density, and a similar model test method is used to assist the analysis of the roof movement under the control of gangue backfilled mining using stress sensors and digital speckle deformation field monitoring. The results show that under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, structural cracks in the roof typically appear at the boundary of rock strata. The appearance of cracks is related to the rock strata where they are located. Structural cracks appear in the form of single cracks ahead of the working face and develop into structural cracks in the goaf. The roof movement of the coal seam develops in five stages: fracture incubation, crack extension in advance, dense fracture development, steady fracture expansion, and roof stability. Separation forms the primary component of the roof subsidence, accounting for more than half of the subsidence value. The separation generally extends over a long distance along the strike, and vertical crack-intensive areas appear in the roof above the cut-off and stop line. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis to support designs of backfilled mining and upgrading of hydraulic supports in working faces.

In 2021, BHP and Metso examined processing of high-MgO nickel sulfide concentrates using Metso’s Ausmelt Top-Submerged-Lance (TSL) technology. Test work was conducted in Metso’s pilot test work facility in Dandenong, Australia to explore operability of the SiO2-FeO-MgO-CaO-NiO slag system across a wide range of compositions, temperatures and bath oxygen potentials. Pilot-scale testing aimed to define slag ‘operability limits’, representing the lowest bath temperature at which stable process and equipment operation could be maintained. This work was supported by FactSage™, version 8.2 (by Thermfact/CRCT and GTT-Technologies) thermodynamic modelling, slag viscosity measurements, physical characterisation of quenched slag samples performed by the University of Queensland and benchmarking of commercial-scale TSL nickel smelting operations. A wide range of slag compositions were examined, with Fe/SiO2 ratios varying from 0.4–1.1, CaO content from 0.8–7.0 wt per cent and MgO content from 6–19 wt per cent. Slag SiO2/MgO ratio, wt per cent CaO and matte grade were found to have the greatest impacts on identified operability limits. Operability limits were found to be influenced by both the solids content in slag and viscosity of the remaining liquid slag phase, with the relative contribution of these parameters heavily influenced by the slag composition. In the majority of trials, limits were defined by a theoretical solids content of 40–50 per cent, however in trials with a low Fe/SiO2 ratio and/or low wt per cent CaO, limits were characterised by a much lower solids content due to the increased effect of the liquid slag viscosity in determining the behaviour of these slags. The test work highlighted inherent flexibility of the Ausmelt TSL process to operate across a wide slag range of slag compositions and recover from process disturbances without an interruption to feeding. The trials also demonstrated the possibility for Ausmelt TSL technology to process concentrates with an Fe/MgO ratio as low as 1.4, which has important implications to the commercial-scale processing of high MgO feeds. Arsenic rejection across the trials was very good, with only 30 per cent of arsenic in the feed inputs reporting to the matte phase. Such high levels of arsenic removal provide the Ausmelt TSL process with a notable advantage over alternative smelting technologies.

BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

The Division of Minerals and Geochemistry in collaboration with three mineral exploration companies, Mawson Pacific Ltd, Ramsgate Resources Ltd and Tectonic Systems Pty Ltd commenced a two year research project to investigate the application of remote sensing techniques to exploration for mineral deposits in access of the Yilgarn Block in Western Australia. The project utilizes satellite data such as day and night imagery from the NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite. The recent research with the imagery in the Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross and Mt Magnet regions has highlighted the advantages of the mid infra-red and the two thermal response channels of NOAA-AVHRR for geological investigations. These three channels have the spectral resolution to distinguish stratigraphic units and younger intrusive bodies, and to delineate fracture zones and shear zones associated with Proterozoic dykes. But most important is the capacity to distinguish thermal signatures from geological structure, near-surface outcrop and palaeochannels which have been covered by unconsolidated sediments. The research project applies remote sensing methods including enhanced satellite imagery optimised to the Western Australian environment. It encompasses data from both space and airborne monitoring platforms that have obsreved a significant spectral response for the classification of alteration zone lithologies. It includes the collection of multiseasonal data from areas of interest which is essential both for the understanding of thermal characteristics of important lithologies and for the extrapolation from field work investigation to potential exploration areas. No comprehensive investigation of this type has been carried out within the Yilgarn goldfields.

The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. This paper presents opportunities to improve the value of an operation through better strategic management of these core activities.
