In the past 40 years substantial changes have occurred in flotation machines. This has included increases in mechanical cell size to 630 m3 , significant changes to flotation column aeration design and widespread use of the Jameson cell and other pneumatic flotation cells. Over the corresponding period there has been increased used of machine characterisation measurements to benchmark and optimise flotation circuit performance. JKTech maintains a database of industrial flotation machine characterisation measurements. The database contains over 4000 entries and includes gas dispersion measurements, such as bubble size, gas hold-up and superficial gas velocity, cell dimensions and impeller tip speeds. Data comes from numerous operating sites and commodity groups, including gold, copper, molybdenum, nickel, palladium, lead-zinc, platinum, silica, phosphate, coal and iron ore. Flotation duties registered include flash flotation, preflotation, roughing, scavenging and cleaner circuits. Measurements have been conducted on a wide range of flotation machines from different manufacturers. This includes forced air machines, such as Outotec and Dorr Oliver, and self-aerated machines, such as Denver and Wemco. The database also includes substantial flotation column entries, such as the Microcel, Eriez/CMT Slamjet and Jameson cell. This paper describes the flotation machine characterisation database and discusses the variation between different types of industrial flotation machines, in operating production circuits.

The Goonumbla district of central-west New South Wales, Australia, hosts four significant porphyry Cu-Au deposits that contain a combined probable ore reserve of 71.7 million tonnes at 1.2 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Mineralisation in the Goonumbla deposits is associated with narrow, pipe-like intrusions of quartz monzonite porphyry, in which several intrusive phases have been recognised. Five textural characteristics have been used to distinguish the various intrusive phases recognised in the Goonumbla porphyry deposits: (1) phenocryst abundance; (2) nature of the groundmass; (3 and 4) proportion and mineralogy of the mafic and non-mafic phenocrysts; and (5) the presence or absence of anhedral quartz grains in the groundmass. In addition, each intrusive phase is classified according to its estimated original quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase contents. Features common to all of the intrusions are that they contain two types of plagioclase and two or three types of K-feldspar phenocrysts in variable proportions. Most of the intrusions also contain apatite micro-phenocrysts. The groundmass textures range from aphanitic through granular to euhedral K-feldspar in a quartz matrix. With only one exception, all of the intrusive phases recognised are either quartz monzonite porphyry or mafic (>5 per cent mafic minerals) quartz monzonite porphyry. The exception is a biotite - phyric monzodiorite, which occurs in the basal portions of one of the deposits. Textural variants of intrusive phases at Goonumbla have been investigated to establish whether specific combinations of characteristics indicate mineralised intrusions, while others suggest barren ones. Some correlations between intrusion types and Cu and Au grade have been recognised. The most important textural characteristic that relates to high grade mineralisation appears to be the low proportion of mafic minerals, because the quartz monzonite porphyry intrusions hosting most of the mineralisation in the two deposits studied contain

In April 2013, Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s (RTKC) Bingham Canyon mine experienced what is arguably the world’s largest ever in-pit slope failure. The failure initiated along a major, continuous, low-strength bedding fault, named the Manefay bed, and comprised approximately 145Mtonnes of rock and waste dump material. Initial East wall slope deformations were detected some months prior to catastrophic slope collapse by RTKC’s slope monitoring systems. However, the failure mechanism was different to that which had historically been experienced in the prior more-than-100 years of open pit mining. Failure occurred as two separate events, the initial one likely consisting of a frictional failure of rock materials along the Manefay bed itself, before a second phase of failure occurred, which included a large mass of old rail dump material. The combination of these events led to a much larger failure run-out than had been anticipated by the RTKC team which led to loss of, and damage to, mining equipment and infrastructure as well as significant interruption to mining activities. Due to the diligent monitoring of the slopes no safety impacts were experienced at the mine, and as such the details and learnings from this failure can readily be shared with the broader mining and geotechnical industries to avoid similar recurrences elsewhere. Underground metalliferous mining methods often result in the formation of vertical openings to facilitate the extraction of orebodies. These development and production techniques can result in the creation of vertical open voids, which include stopes, orepasses, ventilation raises and other excavations. There are risks associated with the use of mobile plant in the vicinity of these voids, especially during backfilling and when bunds are constructed at the edge of a stope or void. These voids can present unacceptable risks if not adequately managed.

The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will include 2.1 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels, 500 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and tunnel portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek, which is incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The resulting topography, geology and hydrogeology of the tunnel alignment are complex.The Assessment of Effects required estimation of the likely settlements resulting from the tunnel construction and assessment of their effects on the buildings, services and other features. A conservative approach was taken when estimating settlements in order to provide an upper bound estimate of the consequent effects. There are three sources of these settlements: mechanical settlement from the tunnel excavation, mechanical settlement from the displacement of retaining walls and consolidation settlement from the groundwater drawdowns during construction and, in some cases, in the long-term.The settlements from these sources were calculated independently and then combined to identify the most critical effects. These combined settlements were used to assess the potential damage to the buildings, services and other features above and around the tunnels. The combined settlement results generally followed the anticipated trough shape centred on the underlying tunnel but with some noticeable effects relating to the underlying geology and hydrogeology.The effects on buildings were typically assessed as negligible with some areas of very slight to moderate damage predicted. Effects on services are anticipated to be minor but some large and older pipes will require specific monitoring during construction. A monitoring programme is proposed to allow the actual settlement and effects to be compared to those estimated with appropriate responses should those effects significantly differ.This paper describes the methods used to calculate and combine the settlements and assess their effects.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. "In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016. The primary object of this paper is to describe the present metallurgical practice of the Emperor Combined Mill, wherein ores from the adjoining and Associated Mining Companies, Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and Dolphin Mines, Ltd., are treated for the recovery of gold and silver.The mining field is located in the foothills, five miles from the sea, on the northern side of Viti Levu, the largest and most important island of the Fiji group.The orebodies occur in basalt and associated ash beds overlain by andesite, tuffs and sediments. The basalt is a dark greenish-black rock and in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of the olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, of the augite to chlorite and of the minute included crystals of iron ore to other iron oxides. Into the basalt intrudes a considerable number of andesite dykes, and the lodes occur as veins in these dykes, as "flatmakes" along fissures or, ash beds extending horizontally from the dykes and at the contact of the basalt and the andesite dices.The Emperor orebody is the largest and most important, and consists essentially of massive, shattered, well altered and mineralized basalt.Little or no free gold occurs in the ore at present being milled, the most important host minerals for gold being the tellurides sylvanite and hessite, next in importance being the sulphides, pyrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. Chalcopyrite is present in quantities large enough to be troublesome in the subsequent concentrate treatment section, while sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena and native tellurium are present in small quantities.Unimportant occurrences of native copper have been observed in both Dolphin and Emperor orebodies.

Treatment processes are outlined for the recovery of rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral-bearing sands on the east coast of Australia. With the exhaustion of the higher grade deposits and the imposition of more rigid specifications for the finished products, strict metallurgical control has become necessary.A description is given of the methods used by The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited to control the operation of suction dredging, of wet concentration using fans and spirals, and of dry separation using high tension and electromagnetic processes. By applying these methods a plant designed for an output of 15,000 tons of rutile per year has been tuned to produce over 20,000 tons of rutile and a corresponding amount of zircon.Details are given of (a) the method of drilling to determine the extent and grade of the ore bodies, (b) a simple electrically-timed pneumatic automatic sampler, and (c) the methods developed for the physical estimation of quartz, rutile, zircon, ilmenite and "others" in the products of plant operation.The method used for calculating the metallurgical balance and the forms used for the reporting of production results are presented.Examples are given which show the value of this detailed production and metallurgical control of plant operation.INTRODUCTIONThe organization which is now known as "The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited" (T.A.M.Co.)-a subsidiary of National Lead Company-commenced operating at Yamba, N.S.W., in 1935. A mixed natural concentrate was at first simply dried and bagged and later was upgraded by the removal of silica and the lighter heavy minerals on shaking tables and, after air-drying, was bagged for export. At that time zircon was the most wanted constituent.

Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg-1 creosote was co-composted with sewage sludge and poultry manure for a period of 19 months. The soil was mixed in a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with wood chips to improve aeration. The soil-wood chips mixture was then mixed in a ratio of four soil-wood chips mixture: one compost material (sewage sludge or poultry manure). Compost heaps were set up in triplicate on wood palettes overlaid with double layers of nylon straw bags. Control experiments, which contained the contaminated soil-wood chips mixture without sewage sludge or poultry manure were set up in triplicate. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratio of the compost and the creosote concentration of the soil was monitored monthly. The concentration of selected creosote components in the soil was also determined at the end of the incubation period. Temperature was observed to rise to about 60¦C in the poultry manure and about 58¦C in the sewage sludge within two months of incubation, while temperature in the control fluctuated between 15¦C and 35¦C throughout the incubation period. Creosote concentration in the control was reduced by 17 per cent at the end of the incubation period while concentration of creosote in the sewage sludge and poultry manure compost was reduced by about 99 per cent. The percentage rate of creosote reduction in the poultry manure compost was initially lower than observed in the sewage sludge compost. However, the reduction rate became similar towards the end of the treatment period. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by about 100 per cent within the same period. Respiration of compost microorganisms and counts of microbial populations showed that microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.

Comminution is the most power-intensive process in the technology for ferrous quartzite concentration. That is why improving comminution efficiency leads to the most appreciable economic effect on the concentration process. The trend towards reducing the lump size of crushed ore before charging the mill is considered to be of major importance in improving comminution efficiency. A considerable number of investigations have been performed in this direction. At the same time, a strong interest is also maintained in the increase of comminution efficiency due to optimisation of process taking place in the mill. Recently, investigations of the power intensity of the breaking process inside the mill have been carried out at the Krivoy Rog Mining Institute. It was ascertained that the routine conditions of comminution at a low mill ball charge ratio resulted in an unnecessarily high power consumption due to the force of impact of falling and milling bodies far exceeding the power required for comminution. For example, the power value for falling balls of 60 - 125 mm in diameter reaches 0.3 kNm, and the force and stress due to ball contact with the lining reaches 60 kN and 250 MPa respectively. These values exceed the force required for comminution by a factor of ten. Analysis of the mechanism of ore particle size reduction during comminution in the ball mill indicates that the size reduction is due to impact load, attrition load, and static load. The efficiency of size reduction is very low. During comminution in the ball mill, impact loads prevail and amount to 85 - 90 per cent of the total load. In this situation, not more than 10 - 15 per cent of destruction is due to attrition.

The current quantity of rejects from coal beneficiation in Australia represents 20 to 25% of raw black coal production. Approximately 80% of the rejects are derived from coarse processing for particles in the 200mm to 0.5mm size range. The safe and enviornmentally acceptable storage of coarse coal rejects is of interest to coal mining companies. Additional public benefit would be derived from the utilisation of a waste product as a source of fill material for civil and mining engineering applications. BHP Engineering has taken a leading role in the design for storage and utilisation of coarse rejects from two mines associated with the Broken Hill Proprietary Conipany Ltd. The tailings dam at Stockton Borehole Colliery (N.S.W.) is to be raised and a study by BHP Engineering has shown that coarse rejects are suitable for the formation of the supporting embankment surrounding a compacted clay core. Transportation and storage of coarse rejects at the Thiess Dampier Mitsui Riverside Mine (Moranbah, Qld) is achieved by a conveyor leading directly from the coal preparation plant to a discharge stacker on the crest of the rejects stockpile. Production of coarse rejects was higher than anticipated for the initial dump design. BHP Engineering has completed a review of dump design with emphasis on safe operating conditions for the conveyors and stacker system. Data on the geotechnical properties of coarse rejects from Australian coal mines are presented. Coarse coal rejects are a material which should not be considered as waste, but as a potentially valuable resource for many future applications. Appropriate engineering design for the storage and utilisation of coarse rejects would result in an improved environment and economic benefits for the Community.

New technology is a significant factor in the present upsurge in world, and Australian, gold extraction and production. The main technologies in current use for gold production are described, referring to overseas developments. Areas where existing techniques have shortcomings or new methods are needed are pinpointed and discussed. Much research work on gold metallurgy is under way round the world, and many new developments have potential. Many of the current research activities round the world are covering unusual and striking areas, with surprising results starting to come through. Some of the "blue sky" techniques reportedly under investigation are identified, together with consideration of when changes in technology are of value. The consequences of new technology for personnel involved in gold plant operations will be raised, including the new education now required.

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. A geotechnical data management system has been developed to manage drillhole and mapping data generated from in house and consultant administered field programs. This system comprises a data collection interface with integrated validation, processing and reporting functionality. Development of the database required careful consideration of how and what geotechnical information is gathered in the field, a clear understanding of the interdependency of the parameters, and the outputs required to support geotechnical design.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System was selected as the preferred software to support the process because of its ability to easily manage data from capture in the field through to quality reviews and ultimately into reports. Initially only geotechnical logging of diamond core was considered, subsequently the system has been expanded to support additional geotechnical data sources such as laboratory test results, traverse and window mapping data. This paper focuses on the core logging data acquisition, validation, analysis and presentation of data.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System has proven to be a robust platform for the capture, interrogation, and reporting of geotechnical data. Data entry objects have been created to manage seven different areas of geotechnical data collection ranging from core logging to mapping to automated reports for falls of ground.

FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. In some deposits valuable heavy mineral quality is poor due to increased mineral surface coatings from higher slimes and more competent sand orebodies. Mineral surface coating can include silica or aluminium rich clay minerals and iron based minerals that render the final product quality off-specification, in this case specifically ilmenite and zircon. Conventional physical beneficiation processes such as magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and gravity separation are not able to remove these surface coatings. Surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic separators are affected by these coatings which hinders the rejection of non-valuable mineral from product. Attrition scrubbing is the most commonly used technique to reduce surface coatings, using mechanically induced particle to particle interaction, abrasion and shearing.In many cases it is a challenge to measure the surface removal efficiency of these scrubbing units. Elemental analysis techniques (ie X-ray flourescence) (XRF) in a multi mineral environment are unable to measure surface impurity reduction with enough precision. Mineralogical analysis (in this case Qemscan®) has constraints in terms of sample preparation with highly coated particles being plucked out during block polishing. This paper suggests a combination of laboratory separation techniques coupled with elemental analysis to evaluate the surface removal efficiency. Three different types of feed materials were used to analyse the efficiency of surface removal using production attritioner scrubbers. This approach relates the downstream beneficiation plant’s expected performance with that of the attrition scrubber’s scrubbing efficiency.

In terms of tunnelling the mining industry is generally thought of as the crude cousin of the civil construction industry. Mining has tended to concentrate on speed and flexibility rather than the high standards required in civil tunnelling. Historically this difference has been based on the belief that such high standards were not required by the mining industry, they would slow down the development of the project and as a result increase the costs and extend the time period between start up and a positive cashflow.For civil works the construction of a tunnel is the project, for mining the construction of declines, crosscuts and drives are merely the means of accessing the orebody so that the real work can begin û MINING. Extraction of ore is the core business of most mining companies û it is what pays the bills.Though most mining companies have the equipment, the people, the knowledge and the ability to excavate tunnels, in the past mining companies did not appear to put the same energy into their tunnelling operations as they put into improving their ore extraction operations. In the past decade this appears to have changed, many mining companies now realise how important the correct excavation of a decline is to the success of the overall mining operation. They began to recognise that there were cost benefits to be gained in using the correct development techniques without overly sacrificing the benefits of speed and flexibility.This recognition also coincided with the growth of underground contractors whose predominant work was primary development (declines and ore access crosscuts and drives). The contractors again had the same knowledge, the same people, and similar equipment but their focus was different from that of the mining company û the contractors were focused on the development of the mine, the excavation of declines, crosscuts and drives. These deliverables were the contractorsÆ core business û itÆs what paid the bills.
