"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. In both laboratory flotation experiments and from analysing the composition of the lead concentrate at the Boliden Tara lead-zinc mine in Ireland, it has been found that F-250 may replace cyanide as a pyrite depressant. Replacement or reduction of the cyanide consumption is highly desirable from a safety perspective given the toxicity of cyanide. Scrutiny of results from the plant trial indicate that F-250 is less efficient as a cyanide depressant when the flotation feed contains high levels of pyrite. Statistical analysis of the results does not capture this trend, illustrating a need to collect more data at higher pyrite ore levels. A recent model proposed for biopolymer-induced pyrite depression is reviewed and discussed next to the suggested mechanism for pyrite depression via cyanide. Review of the interactions causing pyrite depression point to different manners in achieving depression. In light of the less efficient F-250 pyrite depression at high pyrite levels, it is speculated if the two depressants may act synergistically at high levels of pyrite in the feed. Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

The author presents various procedures for the choice of dri-ving systems for mining, including the method of indeterminate Lagrange factors and linear programming.The possible application of the points-awarding method is demonstrated.It allows for taking into account both surd and commensurable characteristics of a driving system for mining. Also, the method of economic efficiency factors is outlined.All these methods make possible the best choice of a driving system, from the as-pect of electric energy saving. Two examples are given.

Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype. In common with several great orebodies and mineral camps around the world Broken Hill has been the subject of state-of-the-art technical and scientific scrutiny during its long working life. During the early years geological interest in Broken Hill tended to be directed at the body for its intrinsic scientific worth, mainly on account of its large size, high grade and wealth of mineral species. For much of the last 60 years the interest has had a more applied motivation, namely, to assist the search for either repetitions in the Broken Hill field or analogues in other terrains. This paper looks at the major changes in geological concepts and exploration techniques applied at Broken Hill and attempts to assess their impact.

Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. Henty Gold Mine is an underground operation producing 100 000 ounces of gold per annum. The original mining method used was flatbacking with paste fill. However, a non-entry method û uphole benching û was introduced in 1998 to recover the deteriorating crown pillars. Initial challenges were encountered, including poor drilling accuracy, difficulty in charging holes and poor rise performance. These challenges were overcome by a Continuous Improvement Team, consisting of mining engineers, supervisors and miners. Following this, the Team implemented further changes aimed at reducing ore loss and dilution. A second area addressed by the Team was development blasting, where innovative detonator technology known as the ExelTM DevelDetTM was introduced and rapidly accepted by the operators. Continued use of the ExelTM DevelDetTM resulted in a number of benefits, such as easier bogging, less perimeter damage, faster charging and hook-up and decreased wastage. Finally, improvements were made in the area of explosive handling, where competency-based training of operators was conducted and manual handling of ANFO has been significantly reduced by the introduction of the MiniMoverTM into the underground magazine.

Characterization of pore pressure is critical for appropriate design of tailings dams. Furthermore, if seepage rates through tailing embankments increase unexpectedly or become uncontrolled, undesirable conditions may prevail to progress piping or internal erosion that could lead to the dam’s instability or ultimate failure. A three-dimensional seepage analysis was performed on a tailings dam using finite element method to find the rate of seepage and pore water conditions in the embankment and foundation. The results were then compared to a conventional two-dimensional seepage analysis carried out on the typical cross section of the embankment and the field data acquired from the instrumentation system. Considering the monitoring data, comparison of seepage analyses results for the two and threedimensional models, showed that the results of the conventional two-dimensional seepage analysis are significantly underestimating reality. Relying on two-dimensional seepage analyses might result in underestimation of seepage rates and impact the safe operation of tailings dams. Similarly, unrealistic prediction of pore water pressure conditions, based on simplified seepage analyses, can lead to overestimation of the rate of strength gain of material and consequently safe embankment raising rates.

Movement of the fragmented rock mass is an inevitable consequence of open cut blasting. Uncontrolled, unaccounted movement from blasting commonly causes ore loss and dilution from waste mixing. Therefore, the prediction of the post-blast location of both ore and waste is vital in grade control and of direct interest to mining geologists. Direct measurement techniques have matured significantly over the past decade, but their use remains expensive and labour intensive. Access and safety issues are further disincentives to regular movement monitoring. What is needed is a combination of direct measurement to establish baselines and reliable predictive modelling.The W H Bryan Mining and Geology Centre of the University of Queensland has pioneered 3D blast movement modelling using ‘physics engines’ to handle in-flight collisions and predict the final resting place of blasted material. Open cut metalliferous mines are a demanding environment for this style of modelling as they can involve complex geometries and variable buffering, which leads to inconsistent confinement. A version of the model designed to deal with these complexities is under development. A well-controlled field trial was needed to validate this new version.A validation trial was completed at a gold mine in South-East Asia. The aim was to increase throughput by increasing the blast powder factor without losing grade through dilution and mixing with waste. Four blocks were blasted to identify the effect of bench height and face confinement on ore movement, fragmentation and process throughput. The powder factor and blast timing were kept constant. Movement of the broken rock was measured by placing blast movement monitors at known positions in the block and then locating them after the blast. The majority of sensors were recovered, providing a unique insight into blast movement dynamics and generating a substantial data set for model validation.The model (called ‘MetaMove ‘) was calibrated for one blast and applied to investigate the extent of grade loss and possible mitigation strategies. Conventional mining techniques that involved firing across the strike of the orebody, and no post-blast boundary adjustment of the ore/waste boundaries prior to digging, were found to cause up to 44 per cent loss of high-grade ore, depending on the grade distributions. Post-blast adjustment of the ore/waste boundaries can negate this loss. The model indicates that altering timing and ensuring that the block boundaries are well confined can further constrain the movement of ore/waste boundaries. Thus, the model can be successfully applied to minimise grade dilution and limit misclassification of ore as waste whilst using higher powder factors to increase mill throughput. Application of a calibrated model to move ore/waste boundaries prior to digging will enable the production geology team to add significant value to the mining operation.CITATION:Cocker, A and Sellers, E J, 2014. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries. The history of black coal as a fuel dates back in Europe more than 2,300 years, and possibly longer in China. Originally the mining of coal was done by underprivileged people, but with the industrial revolution and the dawn of mechanisation, the status of the coal miner improved. The improvement continued to the present day. Coal miners now take an important role in industrialised countries and enjoy a high standard of living. The miner is amongst the highest paid and best technologically served in any industrial activity. The abundance of coal relative to alternative fuels and its widespread occurrence, brings with it a prosperity much valued in those countries with significant resources such as Australia. Coal will play a major role in easing the world energy shortage. In addition to the conventional usage, throughout the world coal gasification plants are in various stages of development. Coal liquefaction plants are beyond the drawing board stage. Slurry pipelines to supply coal for direct burning in electric generating and other plants are planned. In the current atmosphere of environment consciousness, Australia has to contend with people with only marginal interest trying to influence coal mining activities to the detriment of the overall prosperity of Australia. Fortunately enlightened legislation is the greatest protector of the environment and in many instances great improvement to the environment ensues after mining has passed. With its vast resources of black coal Australia can look forward to a significant role in future supply of fuel. As a result of the trade and industry involved, Australia can become an even more influential country in world politics, trade, and the setting of high living standards.

The Intec Copper Process uses a strong chloride electrolyte at atmospheric pressure and 80 - 85¦C to produce high purity, 99.99 per cent copper granules and elemental sulphur. A recent, exhaustive study by an independent, major Australian corporation has shown the capital cost of an Inter plant to be approximately half that of a copper smelter at the 200 000 tpa capacity level and approximately half the operating and capital cost at the 50 000 tpa level. The Inter process costs were also shown to be greatly superior to the best available leach/SX/electrowin technology. The process utilises a multi-stage counter current leach at 80 - 85¦C with the addition of air at atmospheric pressure to precipitate iron as a goethite type compound, followed by a two-stage purification process separating impurities in metallic- and other forms. Purified cuprous chloride/sodium chloride solution is fed to an electrolytic diaphragm cell where high purity copper granules are produced at current densities of 1000 - 1500 A/m2 withoutthe need for conventional electrode stripping. Power consumption is approximately half that of the cupric route. The product is suitable for the direct powder metallurgical conversion of the granules to products such as wire or strip. All the steps in the 'furnace free' conversion of copper mineral to product have been demonstrated The process can treat low grade and contaminated concentrates without penalty, thereby offering greater returns to the miner. Lead, zinc and silver may be recovered as metals, with the high oxidation potential of the electrolyte allowing extraction of gold at high efficiency. The gold is selectively precipitated on activated carbon with negligible copper and silver contamination.

A study was conducted to describe the microbiology of the MICCL Monywa chalcocite heap bioleaching operation. Microorganisms were detected in the heap using culture-based techniques and cultureindependent PCR-DGGE analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. The metabolic requirements, temperature and pH optima were determined for selected strains isolated from the heap material. Six strains (BH1-BH6) were enriched and isolated from heap solids and leachate samples. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA genes showed that strains BH3 and BH4 were closely related to the acidophilic bacterium Acidithiobacillus caldus and strains BH5 and BH6 were closely related to Leptospirillum ferriphilum. The optimum growth temperature for L. ferriphilum was 41.3¦C and the optimum pH range was 1.1 to 1.5. A new species of Archaea was isolated from the heap samples. Cells of the proposed species, Ferroplasma cyprexacervatum (æcyprusÆ L.n. meaning copper; æexacervoÆ L.v. meaning æto heap upÆ), are non-motile pleomorphic cocci, capable of chemomixotrophic growth with ferrous sulfate and yeast extract. Cells grow anaerobically on ferric iron in the presence of potassium tetrathionate and yeast extract as electron donors. Growth occurs from 14¦C to 63¦C, with an optimum temperature of 55.2¦C. The optimal pH for growth was 1.0 - 1.2. The species was phylogenetically most closely related to Ferroplasma acidiphilum with a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95 per cent. Molecular analysis of mine samples (16S rRNA PCR-DGGE) detected the above-mentioned cultured strains of microorganisms as well as species of Sulfobacillus and other unknown Proteobacteria. The microbial community of the Myanmar bioleach heaps contained similar levels of diversity to a dump bioleach operation in Chile, but contained greater amounts of biomass than another heap bioleach operation in Australia. The operating parameters of the Myanmar heaps (low pH and moderate temperature) have selected for the growth of moderately thermophilic microorganisms that are more commonly found in extremely low pH acidic mine drainage sites than in heap systems. The novel species of Ferroplasma is thought to be involved in the aerobic and anaerobic cycling of iron within the heap bioleaching environment.

Research into the control of diesel particulates (DP) has been. conducted by BHP Coal for more than 7 years. Personal monitoring of employee exposures (n = 480 full shift samples) conducted at nine underground coal mines has indicated that the exposure of the workforce ranges from less than 0.1 to 2.2 mg/m3 of DP dependent on job type and mining operation. Approximately 50% of the mass of DP captured is elemental carbon (EC) which is the species currently being considered by some international regulatory authorities as the exposure standard. Five technologies for controlling DP were investigated in a combination of studies conducted in an above ground simulated tunnel, in a special controlled section of underground mine roadway and validated by application in standard coal mining operations at Tower Colliery. Tests conducted under controlled conditions indicate that dependent on the type of fuel in use, the introduction of low sulphur fuels can reduce DP levels in return airways by up to 50% and in actual mining situations a reduction of 20% can be achieved in exposure of the workforce. In addition, subjective responses from the workforce indicate that exhaust emissions from low sulphur fuels provide lower irritation and a more pleasant aroma. The use of water filled scrubber tanks reduces the level of DP emissions by 25%. Chemical decoking of engines resulted in a reduction of 20% in DP in return airways. A commercially available non-flammable disposable dry exhaust filter constructed from synthetic organic fibres with an operational lifetime in excess of 20 hours was found to reduce DP exhaust emissions by 80%. Investigations have indicated that the use of increased ventilation to control DP levels particularly in multiple vehicle situations does not follow a simple dilution factor and in some instances compliance with current regulatory requirements may not produce the required reduced exposure levels. The results from single component control strategies provide considerable reduction in exposure to DP, however the most efficient and cost effective control methodology is the use of a combination of individual systems modelled to operations conducted at each mine.

Government established and financed the NZ Steel Investigating Co in 1960. Its investigations showed that a steel industry was feasible and desirable based uponNorth Island titanomagnetite ironsands, and charted a route for its establishment. The initial processing used post-1945 preheating and prereduction developments, but later innovative improvements created what was essentially a new New Zealand technology. Of the North Island titanomagnetite deposits: the small ones at Waipipi were best made available for export; those at Kawhia and Taharoa were too remote for the economic siting of a mill; that at Raglan proved too small; while at Waikato North Head three times the requirement of 50 million tons of concentrate were located in two sand areas averaging 18 per cent titanomagnetite. Economic studies showed that a South Auckland site would be ideal, close to New Zealand's biggest market. The mill site, on a basalt flow at Glenbrook, was located by a half-day's fieldwork - near both the Waikato North Head deposit, and a railhead for bringing in Waikato coal, etc, and taking out steel products.   This development was one of several since World War II which altered significantly the lives and homes of New Zealanders (others were natural gas, oil, geothermal power, epithermal gold, aluminium, opencastable lignite, etc). All had the essential ingredients of the highest government backing, direct or indirect government finance, and first-class New Zealand scientific and engineering skills (eg to create new technologies). Not one such project failed.

Vertical retreat open stoping (VROS) is a variation of sublevel open stoping (SLOS) that has been introduced at Cannington to minimise the influence of subvertical geological structures during stope extraction. The first application of VROS is described, where structures within the stope resulted in a change in firing sequence and the extraction of two complete sublevels in a single blast. The use of electronic detonators is critical to the success of VROS and their application is described. Numerous benefits of using VROS have been identified and are described. To date, eight stopes have been successfully mined using VROS. In addition to the first application of VROS, two further case studies are described.

The 3.5 million tones per annum Enterprise mine is the newest underground copper mine at Mount Isa in northern Australia. At a depth of up to 2000 metres, it is the hottest and deepest mine in Australia. In situ rock temperatures sometimes exceed 60¦C requiring the installation of substantial amount of refrigeration to provide safe working conditions for mine workers. The latest refrigeration project at the mine, R67, required the design and installation of the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler and AustraliaÆs largest chilled water plant. The plant is mounted on the surface of the mine and provides 25 MW of refrigeration to cool some 580 kg/sec of ambient air to 11.4¦C. This is equivalent to the production of 6300 tonnes of ice per day. The plant was designed for high availability, as any downtime would result in substantial production losses to MIM, and also had the potential to quickly result in unsafe levels of heat stress within the underground workplaces. The bulk air cooler has been designed for a capacity of 34 MW(R), the expected ultimate carrying capacity of the 7 m vertical intake shaft. Being located well inside the tropics, technical issues such as control of thermal pulldown required special consideration. Also, the bulk air cooler had to be designed to handle whatever demand for fresh air was imposed by the mine below, with over 100 per cent variations in airflow expected, and without loss of thermal efficiency. A substantial program of risk assessment and HAZOP studies was used to protect underground miners from leaks of ammonia into the air or water circuits. Fully automatic control systems result in a totally unmanned plant that is supervised remotely. Extensive use is made of a small scale computer (IBM 1130), in the calculations of ore reserves for Western Mining Corporation's nickel mine at Kambalda, W.A. All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve.
