CSA Mine, named after the nationalities of the mines first owners being Cornish, Scottish, Australian, is one of Australia’s deepest and highest-grade copper mines. A combination of the modified Avoca method and shrinking was a standard practice where production rings were fired against and bogged to waste fill. This method resulted in dilution and involved rehandling of waste material to refill the bogged stopes in the Western region and the QTS Central. The introduction of pre-charging blastholes using a wireless initiating system (WebGen™) has enabled CSA to design and fire stopes in reverse. This involves the use of a pre-charged Temporary Rib Pillar (TRP) against the waste fill material in a previously mined stope. The temporary pillar reduces dilution and improves conventional bogging as material is blasted towards the drawpoint rather than towards the waste fill material. Additional drill, prep and blast re-work is reduced or completely removed as rings can be charged prior to, in conjunction with, or after, charging of the slot. This is a safer practice as the charge crew spend no time working adjacent to a brow or open void. A TRP trial was conducted in the western orebody at CSA. The risk of exposure to a brow or open void while charging underground, and the bogger rehandling of waste material was successfully eliminated. Once reverse stoping was established in modified avoca stopes at CSA, two TRPs were implemented in challenging ground conditions in the QTS Central region. The TRPs were utilised in a retreating four-way intersection to extract a central diminishing pillar to close the level out. The ore recovered in this stope provided 5 per cent of CSA’s copper for the year. Without pre-charging with a wireless initiating system, two 5 m pillars totalling 6936 t of ore at 7 per cent either side of the stope would not have been recovered. CSA has implemented the practice of reverse stoping in modified avoca stopes using TRP for ten stopes since the successful trial. The development of additional blasting techniques enabled by precharging with wireless initiating systems is currently underway in the QTS North orebody at CSA Mine.

A mine project combines vast amounts of information from various disciplines including but not limited to geology, mining, metallurgy, technology, environment and economics. In many cases, all relevant information is not fully shared between all disciplines. Thus, project performance (technical, economical and sustainability) may be evaluated on basis of insufficient information resulting in non-optimal decisions, project execution and risk management. Advances in computing power and simulation software enable various data sets to be incorporated in a single digital platform enabling more efficient and transparent data sharing. In addition, linked data sets and simulation can support assessment and optimization of the project as a whole rather than focusing on optimization of individual events. Traditional methods for installing gaskets for segmented bored tunnels have relied upon different bonding procedures with adhesives that carry a series of disadvantages to segment producers. Fixation of the gaskets into the concrete segment as part of the casting procedure has been developed over the last 20 years and has emerged as an economical solution to produce high-quality tunnel segments for various technical tunnel applications. "The Chesney deposit, located 4 km south-east of Cobar consists of three copper-gold rich shoots that lie within a larger, copper dominant lode. A fourth gold rich shoot is located adjacent to the main deposit. The deposit exhibits a strong structural control on mineralisation, as brittle deformation during subvertical extension provided the requisite structural traps to precipitate sulfides from solution. It is postulated that the Great Chesney Fault acted as a fluid conduit, conveying fluids to the site of orebody formation. The continual supply of fluids resulted in cyclic brittle deformation when the fluid pressure exceeded the lithostatic pressure and the tensile strength of the Great Cobar Slate.Evidence supports the hypothesis that ore deposit formation was controlled by: a supply of mineralised fluids transported along the Great Chesney Faulta suitable location for the mineralised fluids to accumulate, accommodated by vertical extension and dilation in certain locationsthe creation of suitable structural traps to capture the sulfides. These traps formed as a result of fault-valve behaviour. The concept of a ‘critical velocity zone’ in the longwall goaf environment for the development of a spontaneous combustion event has been supported by numerical modelling. However, there is no experimental data available for Australian coals to show ventilation effects on the self-heating incubation behaviour of broken coal in the longwall goaf. A preliminary study using incubation testing has been completed on three high volatile bituminous coals (A, B and C) with R70 self-heating rate values of 3.86°C/h, 3.15°C/h and 2.09°C/h and moisture contents of 11.3 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively. Mass to flow rates used in the adiabatic oven reaction vessel have been selected to be indicative of a sluggish, natural air leakage and medium ventilation environment. Under a sluggish ventilation flow rate all three coals incubate to thermal runaway in minimum time frames of 2.8–3.1 years, 34–42 days and 79–95 days, respectively. When the ventilation flow rate is increased to natural air leakage, coal A with the highest R70 value and highest moisture content selfheats to 28°C above mine ambient temperature before heat loss takes over due to moisture evaporation. However, both Coals B and C at this flow rate incubate to thermal runaway in a shorter time frame than under sluggish flow. At the medium ventilation flow rate, only Coal B incubates to thermal runaway, albeit after a significant extended period of time. These results show how important it is to determine the heat balance between the coal intrinsic reactivity (as indicated by the R70 value) and moisture content. The results also have implications for the possible location of the ‘critical velocity zone’ and subsequent hotspot development and migration.

In order to mitigate the effects of climate change, our society must be able to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions. As the metallurgical industry is a considerable contributor to these emissions, new greener technologies must be invented and developed. One option could be the direct production of metals from oxides using renewable electricity. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using high-temperature molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) for iron and ferrochrome production. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd and GTT-Technologies) was utilised for estimating a feasible equilibrium electrolyte composition, and the experiments were conducted at 1550–1580°C in conical alumina crucibles with iridium wire as the cathode and platinum wire as the anode. The sources of iron and chromium were either pure FeO powder or industrial chromite pellets. Voltage was applied to the electrolysis cell for 6 hrs and the resulting current was measured, along with oxygen concentration in the off-gas line. The electrolyte comprised of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and CaO. First, the effect of FeO concentration on iron reduction efficiency was investigated using only pure oxide powders as starting materials. The results indicated that 10 wt per cent FeO mixed with the electrolyte resulted in more efficient iron reduction compared to 20 wt per cent. In further experiments, industrial chromite pellets were ground and mixed with the CaO-free electrolyte. Iron and chromium reduction efficiencies were higher when approximately 19 wt per cent of the total sample mass consisted of pellets compared to increasing the pellet amount to 37 wt per cent. Generally, the chromium solubility in the liquid electrolyte was relatively low, and most of the chromium was confined to the spinel solid solution, from where its dissolution to the liquid electrolyte was very slow, resulting in slow reduction kinetics. For larger scale applications, economically more viable electrode materials should be investigated.

History attests to the catastrophic consequences that fire, explosion and contaminated, noxious andirrespirable atmospheres can have for workplace health and safety in underground coal mining. It also confirms that fires and explosions present the greatest risk of partial or total loss of underground mines and equipment and that this risk continues to materialise. The design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the mine ventilation system are core controls for managing the hazards associated with these risks, both for preventing them from materialising and for mitigating their consequences if they do materialise. These are most effective when embedded in a risk management approach.

Mineral processing is characterised by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high-grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customer’s requirement for product purity and consistent quality increases.Over recent years beneficiation techniques for iron ore fines have become more important in order to achieve a maximised utilisation of ore resources and to produce competitive products according to international standards.Many high capacity iron ore beneficiation plants that target the production of fines focus on gravity separation processes using fluidised bed classifiers and spirals or wet high intensity magnetic separators as an alternative. This paper demonstrates the suitability of utilising the allflux® two-stage fluidised bed classifiers to treat iron ore particles up to 2 mm in size as well as showing how the high capacity gaustec® wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) technology offers several advantages compared to other WHIMS technology.The combination of the allflux® and gaustec® technologies offer the following benefits:The two-stage fluidised bed classification extracts a significant amount of concentrate from the feed. This in turn reduces the feed capacity required for the gaustec® WHIMS located downstream.The second classification stage produces a -0.5 + 0.1 mm product and a -0.1 mm product. The efficiency of the magnetic separation on these classifi ed products is high due to optimised settings for each size fraction.

With the depletion of high-grade lump iron ore, concentrates have been identified as an alternative material for sinter making. Adding concentrates to the sinter mixture reduces sinter bed porosity and gas flow through the sinter bed. This will result in lower sinter strand productivity. A potential solution to this problem is to add concentrate in the form of micropellets. This study investigates the effect of concentrate and micropellet additions on the permeability of the sinter mixture. Permeability was measured on sinter mixtures containing ten to 40 per cent concentrates and micropellets at various moisture contents. The effect of concentrate and micropellet addition on the permeability–moisture relationship was examined. The results confirmed that the addition of concentrates into the sinter mix decreases the maximum permeability of the sinter bed. The incorporation of micropellets into the sinter mix reduced the permeability less than concentrate addition. The study also showed that the maximum permeability of sinter mixes containing concentrate is reached at the same moisture content as the sinter mixture without concentrate addition. For sinter mixes containing micropellets, additional water must be added to obtain maximum permeability. Reflectance spectroscopy is now an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. The efficacy of the technique as a tool to characterise the main iron ore and gangue mineralogy at African Minerals Ltd’s Simbili iron ore deposit in north-central Sierra Leone was tested through reflectance spectroscopic analysis of 13 000 pulped drill reserve samples using CSIRO’s HyLogger-1™ system. Specifically, integration of reflectance spectral data with more traditional methods of analysis, such as geochemical analysis and Satmagan measurements, characterised the mineralogy (ie hematite versus goethite) of the oxidised ore at Simbili, quantified the Al associated with goethite and hematite and evaluated the distribution of the main gangue minerals – kaolinite and gibbsite. Relative changes in the Fe2+/Fe3+-bearing oxide and silicate mineralogy, based on mineral indices derived from reflectance spectroscopic measurements, appeared well-related to changes in the ore profile mineralogy consistent with the main ore types identified at Simbili, as representative of an oxidised banded iron formation sequence. Spectral calibration models, developed from a well-characterised training set of mineral mixtures, representative of the oxidised ore zone mineralogy were used to quantify the distribution of Al associated with kaolinite and gibbsite and the iron oxides, goethite and hematite. Combining these mineral spectral parameters with compositional data enabled the differentiation of Al-substituted goethite and hematite and resulted in the identification of low Al-bearing, or ‘clean’, goethite and hematite from high Al-bearing, or ‘dirty’, goethite and hematite. Spectral quantification of the iron oxide Al composition provides a far more rapid means of quantifying the Al substitution in iron oxides at the deposit scale compared to traditional techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis. It also enables a level of volumetric characterisation and the potential for large-scale (ie three-dimensional) mapping, which was not previously possible with other techniques. The potential of the technique was also highlighted when mapping the distribution of the main Al-bearing contaminants (gibbsite and kaolinite) identified in the oxidised ore zone at Simbili. Delineation of such zones provides a guide to managing the most appropriate processing options (ie upgrade potential) within a mineralogical framework. Three-dimensional modelling of the gangue phase distribution may also allow the mapping of lithological and/or structural controls that may be prevalent at Simbili. This work highlights the value in the application of HyLogging™ technology for rapid resource characterisation, particularly for volumetric identification and mapping the distribution of both the economic and gangue phases, which otherwise would be difficult to achieve. As such, the technique can provide a fast and inexpensive means to evaluate ore and gangue mineralogy at the deposit scale and provide a first-pass assessment of the mineralogy and compositional attributes, with the potential to better predict ore metallurgical properties.CITATION:Wells, M A and Ramanaidou, E R, 2015. Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

Carrapateena is a new underground sublevel cave mine and was officially opened in 2020. It has a mine life of 20 years. Development began in 2016, and with the rare opportunity to start a with a blank canvas and having a long mine life, an effort was made to explore how to incorporate innovative and leading-edge technologies. The Ventilation on Demand (VoD) system was designed with the objective to optimise power consumption and ventilation delivery through the primary and secondary ventilation systems. Primary fans controlled by Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and dualwinding secondary fans with multiple setpoints control the delivery of overall quantity. Automated butterfly dampeners control the regulation of air to individual production crosscuts, and automated louvres control the exhaust quantities from the mining levels. Ultra-sonic flow sensors are installed to measure air quantity and environmental stations are installed to measure air quality. Both are designed to play a key role in control and calibration of the system. It was quickly identified that no one vendor could provide a holistic solution to meet the design requirements. A strategy was derived to use multiple vendors, harnessing the specific strengths of each. A control system has been developed to allow the Site Operations Control Centre (SOCC) to oversee and control real-time delivery of ventilation as required by operations. The first full level installation of the VoD system was completed in September 2020.

Blasting operations in open cut mines results in airblast, ground vibration and rock movement with the potential for wild flyrock. In some mines there is a trend towards blasting closer to established infrastructure as extraction boundaries alter with increased resource prices and changed economic circumstances. Mine infrastructure in close proximity to blasting has the potential to be damaged by ground vibration and wild flyrock especially. To provide guidance for the determination of appropriate buffer distances and blast specifications, this paper describes methodologies that may be used to determine the potential for damage to infrastructure by predicting:dynamic blast;near field ground vibration levels;dynamic blast strains induced in infrastructure by consideration of ground vibration,ground strain and response amplification;potential for damage by comparing induced strains with allowable working strainsfrom structure design codes and serviceability requirements; andflyrock throw distances based on models developed from flyrock investigations.This report demonstrates the use of strain prediction methodologies developed during Australian Coal Association Research Programme (ACARP) Project C14057 for infrastructure such as conveyor belts, transmission poles and towers, buildings and bridges.

The Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited. The Operation lies within PanAust’s 2600 square-kilometre Phu Bia Contract Area in northern Laos. Commencing production in 2012, Ban Houayxai is operated by PanAust’s Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining. PanAust owns a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Operation mines an intermediate sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposit and comprises an open-pit feeding ore to a conventional carbon-in-leach process plant. Metallurgical recoveries for gold and silver are approximately 75-85 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. To year-end 2017, the Operation had poured 0.65 million ounces (oz) of gold and 4.7 million oz of silver. The Ban Houayxai Ore Reserve supports a mine life of approximately four years from the end of 2017. The Ban Houayxai deposit is in an early Permian volcano-sedimentary unit which is part of a late Carboniferous to early Permian (310–270 million years ago) volcanic-plutonic sequence of the Truong Son Fold Belt. The deposit formed when hot saline (240–415°C, 2.7–13.0 weight per cent NaCl equivalent) fluids ascended from a geologically fertile island arc porphyry into overlying volcanics along a fault or faults in the early Permian (290–256 million years ago) (Manaka et al, 2014). Australia contains some of the most productive mining areas and is characterised by ancient landscapes and highly variable hydrology. Historical mining of iron ore, coal and other minerals has targeted ore deposits located above water tables, and elevated above creek lines where possible to reduce cost. The downturn in mining caused by falling ore prices over recent years has triggered a drive to reduce cost, maximise yield and delay capital expenditure associated with opening new mines. So as the ore deposits with more favorable mining conditions become depleted there is an increased focus on mining ore associated with valley floors and creek lines. This is demonstrated by a regional assessment of the extent of Channel Iron Deposits (CID) and Iron Ore (Fe) Mines and Deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia (Figure 1). A large proportion of these mines are, or plan to, target high grade CID ore associated with existing creek systems. Figure 2 shows outcropping and inferred sub-cropping CID extents, which suggests there are vast quantities of CID ore deposits throughout the Pilbara Region, intersected by major creeks which could be mined at some point in the future using creek diversions (Atkinson et al., 2017). A similar picture could also be produced for coal mining in Queensland, particularly in areas such as the Bowen Basin.While creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of these orebodies and extend the life of mine, creek diversions can involve substantial financial, social, environmental and regulatory risks that need to be carefully managed (Markham et al., 2017, Atkinson et al., 2017). This paper discusses the key issues and opportunities associated with diversion decision making. It highlights the importance of using a well-structured assessment methodology that allows key stakeholders to be part of the assessment process and is complementary to material presented in Atkinson et al., (2017). Design considerations for operational and closure designs are presented, as well as mine planning considerations, risks, cost saving opportunities and the benefits of an integrated approach to design. The efficiency of operation for each cell is,discussed in terms of the electrochemistry of (a) gold deposition, and (b) packed bed electrodes. The advantages and problems associated with each cell design are presented and recommendations are made as to the best method of gold recovery.

The results from three quick methods for the determination of W03 in scheelite ore samples, mill products and concentrates were compared with gravimetric results and tested with standard samples to establish which was the most reliable. Summaries of the methods, two X-Ray fluorescence and one colorimetric, are given. The best method was X-Ray fluorescence, with samples cast as glass discs.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers. The paper reviews winder rope inspection procedures at the Non Destructive Testing (NDT) Unit of Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) and outlines measures taken to adopt the world's best practice. The measures include acquisition of a new type of rope tester, adoption of comprehensive rope rejection criteria, adoption of a standard rope inspection procedure and formal training of the wire rope inspectors.
