External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of operating mines. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving the focus on safety, sustainable mining, green issues, profitability and productivity. There is a very high emphasis on ‘reducing cost to improve’, lower mining and beneficiation costs by eliminating waste/inefficiencies (reduce people, use less consumables, multiskilling, etc). The internal mining environment is getting tougher to operate in, with the deposits being more difficult to mine, more difficult to manage due to external pressure along with issues associated with maintaining quality, etc.Technological and environmental developments too numerous to mention, mean that cost control models, reduction in human resource numbers, as well as other drastic measures to curtail expenditure and increase profitability have become part of everyday business. The capability to manage the mining environment in a systemic manner has been lacking and this increases the pressure for performance on those individuals operating and managing mines.Working smarter has become crucial to ensure that businesses optimise the use of their resources, become more safety conscious, more productive and remain cost-effective, while recognising the importance of sustainable mining now and in the future. The logic of determining and managing to the capability of the mining value chain will be examined and the underlying assumptions or beliefs guiding behaviour and decision-making will be highlighted.In order to identify the obstacles in the mining value chain that hinder achievement of its full potential, the following questions have to be asked:What are the factors that influence the performance of a mining value chain?What is the design capacity of the mine?How can the inherent flow and value capacity of a mine be determined?What types of solutions will allow a mine to operate at its inherent flow and value capacity?This article will discuss the way we plan, measure, assess and manage the mine value chain, by addressing the following factors:balanced capacity versus flow and value capacity designthe use of averagingoptimising individual components in a value chain versus optimising the whole value chain.Optimising flow and value through the mining value chain is one of the three pillars of Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MR™). MR™ is an entrenched and academically supported philosophy that has been successfully applied in the past decade in various mines throughout the world by EXXPLEO, a mining and beneficiation consulting company. EXXPLEO has partnered with HCL (a global IT company) to embed the MR™ philosophy, methodology and toolsets into a formal software product called Synchronised Digital Mining (SDM). Remedial options for a waste rock dump (WRD) were considered as part of closure planning studies at an active mine in Western Australia. To minimise the impact of any seepage from the landform it was determined that placement cover system utilising the moisture ‘store-and-release’ concept was appropriate. The purpose of the cover system was to:•Reduce net infiltration of meteoric water to attenuate peak concentrations for contaminants of concern in natural receptors to levels that can be assimilated without adverse impact to the surrounding ecosystem; •Provide a growth medium for establishment of a sustainable vegetation canopy; and •Improve current quality of surface water runoff from waste storage areas.The project comprised several phases of work: materials characterisation, numerical soil-plant-atmosphere (SPA) modelling and finally cover system construction and monitoring equipment installation.CITATION:Barritt, R, 2018. The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

Currently, many commercial sinter plants are exploring the potential addition of high-grade iron ore concentrates to improve the sinter grade. A better understanding of the ore blend, granule behaviour and green bed properties is critical to making this change and maintaining productivity in the sinter plant. This study compared the performance of a laboratory scale granulation drum to a commercial scale unit. The blend used was an Asia-Pacific style sinter blend containing iron ore concentrates. The operating conditions of the two granulation drums (laboratory and commercial scale) were fixed at the same Froude Number (0.00337), space factor (15 per cent) and residence time (4.5 mins). The granules were characterised by measuring their mean size, size distribution and green bed voidage. It was found that the laboratory scale granules were representative of commercial sinter plant granules at similar moisture content. When the moisture was fixed at ~6.9 per cent, granulation time had no significant effect. A further fundamental investigation was undertaken to measure the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity of the individual ores used in this study. The kinetics of water absorption were measured which showed that water absorbs quickly into the ore particles within the first 60 seconds, slowing down until final saturation was attained after six hours. A linear relationship between the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity was noted for different ore particle sizes. The results of this study provide a baseline understanding of the current commercial sinter blend and encourage exploring the specific effect of increasing the proportion of ultrafine concentrates in sintering in a future study.

Bendigo Mining operates a 600 000 t/a comminution, gravity, flotation and leaching processing plant for the recovery of gold from their Kangaroo Flat Operation, in the Bendigo goldfields. The free gold and gold bearing sulfi des present are typically coarse grained and hence are highly amenable to gravity recovery. Plant operating data is consistently showing that over 78 per cent of the feed gold is recovered in a circuit, consisting of inline pressure jigs, inline spinners followed by free gold tabling and intensive leaching of tabling tails. The circuit receives coarse crushed product from high pressure grinding rolls and the grinding mill discharge, which allows material to be re-circulated through the gravity process until the particles are small enough to enter the flotation circuit. A plant audit was completed on 26 November 2009 designed to give an indication of the overall operational characteristics of the gravity circuit including single pass efficiencies of associated equipment. The techniques, results and challenges of such a survey are discussed.

Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

THE reduction of iron from the ferric to the ferrous state prior to its titration by permanganate or dichromate may give erroneous results in the presence of other reducible metals such as titanium. Stannous chloride and metallic zinc both reduce tetravalent titanium to a lower form, and so increase the consumption of the oxidizing standard: solution. Sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphurous acid do not reduce titanium, but are slow in action and troublesome to manipulate.Sulphuretted hydrogen is considered to be the best reducing agent for iron in the presence of titanium.* In the method to be described the advantages of the H 2S reduction are retained without the disadvantages of using the gas. The reduction is carried out by the action of a metallic sulphide having a solubility product of such a value that the sulphide iom, are utilized as fast as they are formed, and but little free sulphuretted hydrogen is given off.Cadmium sulphide was the first to be tried, but its solubility product (3.6 x 10 - 2~)t was apparently too low. The reduction was satisfactory, but the excess was very difficult to remove. Zinc sulphide (S.P. = 1.2 x 10 - 23) was found to be quite satisfactoryin both respects. The zinc sulphide is preferably used in the form of an emulsion prepared from pure zinc sulphate as follows: About 100 grm. of ZnS047H20 is dissolved in 2 litres of water. H2S is passed until no further precipitate is obtained, the acid formed being barely neutralized from time to time by the addition of ammonia. The precipitation of the sulphide in a slightly acid solution gives a finer emulsion than that prepared in an alkaline solution, and any iron present remains dissolved. In 2000, after six year intensive exploration for high-grade haematite deposits, Rio Tinto included the channel iron deposits (CID) as a specific iron ore target in the Hamersley Province iron ore exploration program. The exploration model was simple and based on the then current understanding of CID genesis. Fundamental to the model was an interpretation that CID deposits after their final accumulation stage could be entirely concealed in their channels. Inversion to mesas and therefore exposure of the CID profile would only occur in areas where the modern drainages follow the ancient and have significantly incised their current bedrock. The model took encouragement from observations at Bungaroo Creek, where large CID accumulations occur in a deep valley incised in the Wittenoom Formation concealed below recent valley fills derived from the surrounding BIFs. Also, in the headwaters of the Yandicoogina system CID occurs below a more recent cover of calcrete and clay. After a number of failed or partially successful attempts, exploratory drilling in 2002 in the Caliwingina valley in the northern Hamersley Range identified significant CID mineralisation. Subsequent drilling programs from 2003 onwards revealed the presence of a large CID system, which stretches from the middle reaches of the Caliwingina Creek to deep under the sediments of the Fortescue Valley, a channel length of more than 30 km. Although the drilling is still somewhat sparse, the geological resource estimation suggests that Caliwingina is presently the third biggest CID system of the Pilbara (after Yandicoogina and Bungaroo Creek) and is of comparable size to the premining Robe River system (1.6 Bt), with comparable Fe-grades to the Yandicoogina global resource grade (57.7 per cent Fe). Large detrital and canga deposits overlie the Caliwingina CID, or interfinger with it, and although the economics of these are presently unfavorable, could ultimately present a low-grade iron resource of slightly smaller size to the CID mineralisation at Caliwingina Creek. Together with the recently discovered Serenity and Solomon deposits, as well as Cabbage Gum Bore and other smaller occurrences, the Caliwingina Creek deposit is part of a major new CID district in the central Hamersley Ranges, approximately halfway between Yandicoogina and Robe River. Although exploration in this new district is still underway, the preliminary indications are that this area will provide a total CID resource well over 3 Bt, and is on a par with the major known CID systems in the Hamersley Province.

Managing heat stress on Australian mine sites is a complex and enduring challenge due to the combined and variable contribution of environmental conditions, physical activities, and protective equipment. Inappropriately managed, heat stress can place significant physical strain on workers, leading to serious and chronic health issues. Additionally, excessive heat stress can dramatically reduce productivity, with 30 per cent of workers reporting a loss of productivity due to occupational heat strain. In Australia, due to increased absenteeism and reduced work performance, heat strain is estimated to have an annual economic burden of over $8 billion.

Reconciliation is a powerful tool used by mining operations to compare the mass and grade of ore produced with what was estimated before mining. The primary objective of reconciliation is to verify that the estimated planned metal production is achieved during processing, allowing issues to be identified for which adjustments can be made throughout the mining value chain to improve recovery and maximise efficiency. Traditionally, the mine plan is based on estimated mine grades using sampled exploration drill hole or blasthole grades. Reconciliation discrepancies between the mine plan and mill are common due to such factors as insufficient or non-representative sampling, poorly conceived models, or unrecognised blast movement. MineSense Technologies Limited® (MTL) has developed an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor-based ore classification system that is installed on mining equipment to provide real-time grade estimates of run-of-mine material at bucket, truck, or belt-scale. Bucket level grade estimates provide insights into grade variations at the mine face that were never before available. This data set eliminates some of the leading causes of reconciliation discrepancies and enables tracking of tonnages and grades from the mine face to the processing plant at bucket resolution with confidence. Bucket-by-bucket grades at the mine face enable dynamic optimisation of the mine plan to stabilise the mill feed grade through blending of mine and stockpile loads. Beyond stabilising feed grade, Mine to Mill reconciliation combined with the full XRF spectrum response can generate proxy relationships to ore characteristics like hardness and recovery. These properties can then be predicted at the mine face, enabling further optimisation of the downstream mill feed, not only for grade, but also for power and water consumption, reagent addition, and recovery. This paper presents the benefits of MTL technology for grade reconciliation and mill performance optimisation at a Cu Mine in BC (Canada).

The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.

The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. Once mud has formed, typical handling techniques include its costly removal by mechanical means, or its isolation and capping.There are little data available on the moisture state and shear strength of the capped mud. To investigate the effectiveness of isolation and capping, research has been conducted using a large slurry consolidometer (150 mm in diameter by up to 410 mm in height) to simulate capping in situ. Once consolidated, the mud was subjected to shear strength testing in a direct shear box measuring 60 mm by 60 mm by about 20 mm high. The shear strength of the consolidated mud was compared to that of competent, fresh spoil, a mixture of spoil and mud, and to completely degraded spoil (mud alone).These results have been used as inputs in stability calculations using the commercial computer program Slide 7.0, which demonstrates the strong influence of consolidation of the mud on overall low wall slope stability. NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, aO2-, and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of aO2-, which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions.

We are all no doubt aware that with today's high costs it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the mining industry. Screening is an important and often costly process in the size classification of industrial minerals and for this reason alone it is essential for both managers and operators to fully understand what type of screening equipment is best suited for a particular application and why. The advent of elastic materials such as rubber and polyurethane have added a new dimension to the process of screening. It is important to understand why the physical properties of these materials can be of benefit in the screening process, and recognise which type of screening applications best take advantage of these orooerties.

Carrapateena is a copper-gold deposit hosted in a brecciated granite complex, located 500km North of Adelaide, South Australia. The deposit is being mined using the Sub Level Caving (SLC) Mining method at a rate of 4.25 MTPA. The Carrapateena SLC construction was completed in Q4 2019, with ramp up to a mine production rate of 4.25 MTPA completed within 12 months; ~ 6 months earlier than originally planned (OZ Minerals, 2020b). Traditional SLC designs have had issues with safety interactions on production levels, namely at the perimeter drive, as well as presented challenges for the application of automation due to frequency of activity required to achieve ring turnover rates. Safety in design provides an opportunity to learn from experience at recent modern SLC operations and by considering hazards early in the design process minimise exposure and improve safety, productivity and automation of mining activity. This paper discusses the work carried out during the Carrapateena feasibility study and optimised during project execution; to update the SLC production level mine design, with a layout known as the Carrapateena Crows Foot Level Layout. This paper focuses on: • An introduction to the Carrapateena Operation and mine plan. • An overview and historical challenges of traditional level layout. • An introduction to the Carrapateena Crows Foot level layout, including production level design parameters as well as development metres and productivity comparisons. • Outlines the benefits of the Crows Foot design for safety in design of SLC operations. Provides a roadmap for improved production efficiency, level operational philosophy and the application of automation within the SLC.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.
