The removal of bismuth from liquid copper in a vacuum furnace was studied over a range of pressures. The rate determining step changes from diffusion in the gas at pressures above 0.2 Torr to approach the Langmuir evaporation rate at pressures of 10-2 Torr. Oxygen and sulphur were found to have a negligible effect on the rate. Bismuth removal from copper sulphide was found to be considerably slower than from copper. This is consistent with the known thermodynamic properties of ternary sulphide melts.

In this paper is given a description of the flotation plant recently erected by Broken Hill South Limited at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. It has been built on the site of the old flotation plant, which was described in a previous paper published by the author. The present paper is supplementary to the former paper in that it replaced the following sections thereof, namely, those from end of the second paragraph, page 269, to the end of the first paragraph page 282, and from the end of the second paragraph, page 284, to the end of the third paragraph, page 302.The roll crushing, fine grinding, gravity concentration, filtration, disposal of products and sampling in the new plant are the same as described in the above mentioned paper.The reconstruction of the flotation section, described herein, completes the reconstruction and modernisation of the treatment plant which was begun in 1928. A description of these earlier alterations has already been published in the Proceedings of this Institute.

The reaction sequences involved in the formation of iron ore sinter phases were determined using in situ synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction. Experiments were carried out using a synthetic sinter mixture containing 77.36 per cent Fe2O314.08 per cent CaO, 3.56 per cent Si.O2 and 5.00 per cent Al2O3 corresponding to a basicity of ~4. The alumina content represents the upper level of alumina concentrations measured in phases formed in industrially produced plant sinter. Data were collected during heating of the sample to 1350°C under an atmosphere of 0.5 per cent O2 in N2, equivalent to an oxygen partial pressure of 5 × 10-3 atm. This temperature was sufficientto ensure melting. Data were also collected on cooling of the sample back to room temperature to examine recrystallisation of phases from the melt.Results showed the sequence of reactions initially involved the formation of calcium ferrite phases C2F and CF. These subsequently reacted with the silica and haematite leading to the solid state formation of SFCA and SFCA-1. SFCA and SFCA-1 were the last phases to form in the system and were both stable up to ~1260°C. Above ~1260°C, melting of the SFCA phases and reduction of the remaining haematite occurred producing the assemblage magnetite + melt.During cooling, both SFCA phase types recrystallised from the melt initially coexisting with magnetite until secondary haematite formed. This is the fi rst study to demonstrate that both SFCA and SFCA-1 are precipitated from the melt during cooling of iron ore sinter. Future work will extend the range of compositions studied to examine the effect of basicity and alumina concentration on the phase assemblages as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure.

The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

Esso-BHP have installed a Production Supervisory Control System that is presently controlling the offshore oil and gas facilities on the Barracouta and Marlin platforms from an onshore master station. This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control. The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexability to handle future variations in operating conditions. The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northern New Zealand region. The timelspace distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15 Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.

This short paper outlines the authorÆs views regarding the present ability of the resources industry to manage its mining assets. It represents a personal view û but one founded in fact-based observations of mining companies and of the mining industry in general. It contends that whilst a great deal has been learnt about the management of mines over the last 500 years since the seminal work of Agricola, observations suggest that best practice management is the exception rather than the rule across our industry. Although insights regarding the successful management of mines have become apparent, we still witness unnecessary errors in our industry that lead to the loss of shareholdersÆ funds. By highlighting some aspects of current best practice, particularly in the arena of operations improvement, it is hoped that this short paper contributes a small step along the next 500-year-long learning curve. At a time of key skill shortages in our industry as mineral producers attempt to ramp-up production to capture historically high commodity prices, achieving best practice operations management has seldom been more critical.

With the increasing sophistication of real-time sampling devices for occupational hygiene exposure assessment, research to objectively assess their performance is a priority. Using real-time monitoring equipment has several advantages over established gravimetric sampling methods, particularly their immediate results, lower overall long-term costs and no laboratory analysis costs, which are appealing to the mining industry due to the ongoing occupational hygiene monitoring programs required by the various regulatory agencies.

When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.

Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. In an area north of Mowit Ica chip sampling of limonitic outcrops on a regional scale led to the investigation of a number of areas considered to be geochemically anomalous for copper and zinc. These areas were closely gridded,end where geochemical results were favourable, they were subsequently drilled or ro¦titeaned Che results indicated that for copper Lne anomalies were mainly associated wiL_ ironstone formed in areas of faulting. is suggested that copper is able to move considerable distances by ground water movement and is likely to be fixed under conditions of low pH. The movement of zinc is more difficult to explain but it appears to have an affinity for iron and is only deposited in areas having a high pH (i.e. doioiirific scdimet=Cs).

The hydraulic backfilling of mine tailings has proven very successful at the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. It allows greater versatility, selectivity and safety in mining. It has also minimized surface subsidence and underground rock movement. The tight filling also eliminates underground fires. This paper explains the hydraulic backfill method used and the problems encountered by so doing.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Burwood Beach Sewage Ocean Outfall is being constructed by the Hunter District Water Board as part of an amplification scheme to eliminate pollution from adjacent bathing beaches. The outfall consists of a 93m vertical shaft, 1950m of 2.7m diameter tunnel with a series of diffuser outlets connecting the seaward end of the tunnel to the sea floor on a rock outcrop. The site of the work is in the Newcastle Coal Measures and the project is complicated by the proximity of colliery workings to tunnel alignment, although the colliery records provided valuable information on geological features. The location of the tunnel was determined to be in the Waratah Sandstone Formation immediately below the colliery workings after three different alternatives were considered. The shaft, which will be sized to suit contractor's construction methods and equipment, will be sunk through about 24.5m of alluvial material and 68.5m of rock. The tender documents were developed to allow the contractor considerable flexibility in construction method to suit available equipment. The specification also allowed great flexibility in tunnel construction method with minimum cross sectional area of 5.7m2 being the basis for a number of allowable alternative profiles ranging from circular to horseshoe.
