Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per cent With shaking table technology of 'First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication', the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.

A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. New Developments in Spirals and Spiral Plant Operations Records indicate that spiral separators have been utilised in mineral separation for over 100 years. The Spiral's predecessor, the sluice, has been in use for centuries in different forms and a spiral can be thought of as a sluice wound around a column. The spiral separator is distinguished from the straight sluice, and other flowing film separators, in uniquely introducing centrifugal motion. The elegance of the spiral concept was embraced due to significantly improved separation efficiencies, ease of operation and tolerance of variation in feed conditions. Advances in spiral technology have improved the metallurgical performance, modernised the materials of construction, increased unit capacities and simplified operation. These advances have ensured that spirals continue to play a major industry role amidst other advancing and competing technologies. Recent developments in spiral and spiral plant technology include: the launch of the VHG spiral model, specifically aimed at feeds with very high levels of high-density mineral particles; the introduction of a high capacity wash water spiral model; and innovations in feed stabilisation and control. Details of these developments are presented together with the resultant operational benefits including feed stabilisation, product control and improved metallurgical performances.

Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.

Different types of lump iron ore-bearing particles were investigated in terms of their raw material properties depending on their behaviour during reduction. To predict the reduction behaviour different types of lump iron ore and pellet brands were characterised by their mineral abundance, texture and pore size. The image processing software VisuMet was developed to semi-automate the evaluation of photomicrographs from polished sections of lumpy iron particles. The results were compared to the standard reducibility test after ISO 4695. The evaluation of lump iron ores is based on the simulation of the transformation of the different iron minerals due to their sequence of reducibility. The progress of the reduction front is simulated and the result is a degradation curve. Pellets were also investigated due to their different pore size distribution. The results indicate that the pore size influences the reducibility in addition to mineral abundance. The evaluation with VisuMet of the lump iron ore and pellet samples correlates with the reducibility provided by the ISO 4695 test. The determination of the mineral abundance by VisuMet is comparable to common point counting with a correlation coefficient of 99.67 per cent.CITATION:Kain-Bückner, B and Mali, H, 2017. The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

What do all iron ore mines have in common? Perfect production days! Yes, those harmonious 24-hour periods when the stars align and the daily output number rockets past the long-term average to hit new heights. While perfect days are always welcome, the focusing question iswas that just a ‘flash in the pan’ (due to a special cause) or an indication of the process’s capability (with clues to the common causes) which, if addressed, could make every day perfect? In the context of today’s operating environment, with the need to maximise productivity at minimum cost, it’s an important question.Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often in the order of 40 per cent, and that bulk solids handling (BSH) system deficiencies are the largest (>50 per cent) class of lost opportunity. Root causes for underperformance of elements in BSH systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. Essentially baked into the fabricated plant, operations are effectively forced to accept them at the point of practical completion and then deal with the consequences for the life of the mine. Subsequent normalisation of these defects in the planning process reduces visibility and hence the impetus for long-term solutions in favour of lower targets and quick fixes to keep the show on the road. On an industry wide basis the design processes and assumptions responsible for BSH system underperformance become enshrined as common practice and hence repeated across sites and organisations.In addition to making the case for action, practical steps that can be taken to help realise the significant productivity prize and avoid the problems in first place are provided.CITATION:Wellwood, G A, 2017. In the context of sustainable development, the Minerals Council of Australia (2010) states that 'investments in minerals projects should be financially profitable, technically appropriate, environmentally sound and socially responsible'. In other words, the business of mining can only be sustained if these criteria are met.   Science and technology plays a major role in all four of these criteria. This paper will present the technology and innovation emerging from the Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship which brings together CSIRO and more than ten of Australia's leading universities to work with industry to drive efficiency, productivity and environmental performance. This work is required if the Australian minerals sector is to thrive and continue to deliver national benefit in the face of increased global competition, declining ore grades, depleting ore deposits, increasingly constrained national resources (land, energy, water and people) and changing societal expectations.   Science and technology to reduce emissions and water use, discover greenfields resources, enable deeper mining operations and transform mineral processing are described. Technology is presented as an enabler of sustainability: a means to this end but not as an end in its own right.

Mining is both a high risk and a long term business. This is dramatically illustrated by the fact that, on average, the explorer will expend over $30 million in a ten year period for each significant economic discovery. The time required to complete the exploration process is one of the most substantial commitments made by any mining company. For example the time lag between the implementation of an exploration programme and an economic discovery is variously estimated to take two to ten years. The ore definition phase following discovery currently takes between two and five years while subsequent mine development may take one to two years in easy situations and up to 8 in difficult environments. In most countries the critical path through the early stages is determined largely by technical considerations but in almost all countries the path through the later phases is dictated by the plethora of permits, licences and community involvement steps.

Equipment maintenance is 30 - 50 per cent of the operating costs for a typical mining company. While this is substantial, its importance is beyond its significance as a cost heading. Modern mining requires large amounts of investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product sold at a low unit cost. To stay competitive, such a business has to focus on full realisation of its capital investment, ie sustained production at high levels. Maintenance plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Mining companies typically use a mix of breakdown or corrective maintenance, planned maintenance, and some condition-based maintenance. The share of breakdown maintenance has been coming down through more effective planned maintenance and better condition monitoring tools. Planned or preventive maintenance (PM) is playing an increasingly important role in todayÆs mining maintenance. This is the suite of inspection and repair/replacement actions performed at scheduled time intervals as part of a preplanned activity. The activities are scheduled well in advance and, usually, the current wear-state of the machine is irrelevant. For example, the replacement of a major gear may have been planned 18 months in advance; replacement is carried out when the time comes regardless of the actual condition of the gear. The PM costs are significant and include direct cost of parts and labour as well as the opportunity cost of lost production while the machine is under maintenance. It is important to identify the optimum PM effort because over-maintenance should be avoided as much as under-maintenance. A new concept called severity-based maintenance is introduced in this paper. We have seen that measuring equipment ageing in mining merely by counting the engine hours is a very imprecise way of planning and scheduling maintenance because the damage accumulated in one hour varies enormously from operator to operator and with changing pit conditions. We recommend continuous monitoring of duty on all major equipment. This is feasible without having to fit out the machine with an army of sensors because most of the physical sensors required by dutymeters are already installed and maintained as part of the existing performance monitors. While the investment is modest, the potential benefits are huge and can be grouped under three headings:Immediate benefits will come from providing operators with direct feedback on the effect of their behaviour on machine health and training them to use this feedback to correct their operating style. The equipment can operate closer to the limits of capacity, producing more without unduly sacrificing the availability by monitoring and controlling the severity of the operation, ie the duty on the machine. Longer term benefits accrue from establishing correlations between actual time to failure data and measured equipment duty and using these correlations to optimise maintenance effort as well as planning new equipment purchases and warranty conditions.

The chemistry of cyanide solutions is complex, this complexity being responsible for the ability to act as complex-forming agents in metal dissolution processes, among them gold and silver. Such ionic species are used in hydrometallurgical processes, in particular in gold extraction and electro-plating. Due to the high toxicity of cyanide, the discard of effluent from processes and/or industries demands rigorous treatment so as to minimise its concentration. Among the conventional chemical treatment of such effluents one can mention SO2/air; biological degradation; oxidation by using hydrogen peroxide; oxidation by sodium hypochlorite, etc. However, the electrolytic recycling process is also promising for cyanide recovery and offers the possibility of recycling it to the aforementioned industrial processes. Such a process does not use additional chemicals but enables direct re-utilisation to the main process aiming at adjusting the cyanide concentration.

This paper examines some of the important aspects of mineral taxation policies and practices, with reference to the mining tax regimes of selected Pacific Rim countries (see Tables 1 and 2). The following subjects are addressed:what is æmineral taxationÆ?, basis for mineral taxation, types of mineral taxes, objectives of the mineral taxation regime, best practices, and mineral royalties. Many countries, in some cases with the encouragement and assistance of international funding agencies, are actively assessing the international competitiveness of their mining tax regimes with a view to attracting investment. However, these countries recognise that the mining tax regime is not the only consideration that is taken into account by prospective investors. The countryÆs geological prospectivity, physical infrastructure, labour force, political risk, and regulatory system are also important factors in the investment decision making process. Although it is probably true that an attractive mining tax regime will not necessarily attract mineral investment, there is a real possibility that an unattractive regime can drive away investment. For example, Hugo Dummett, general manager for discovery at BHP, hinted recently that BHP could cease exploration in Russia in the absence of positive tax changes. Dummett is reported as saying that if taxes æend up being as onerous as they are now, we really have to rethink why we are hereÆ (Mining Journal, London, November 27, 1998).

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. This study helps to reconcile the long-term debate on the timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of gold mineralisation in the Xiong’ershan and other districts along the southern margin of the NCC.CITATION:Li, J-W and Tang, K F, 2015. Over recent years the trend in Australia has been towards the definitions of sustainable development which emerged from the 1992 Rio Summit of retaining a commitment to ecological integrity, but also incorporating social and economic dimensions of sustainability. Sustainable development may be seen as maintaining and enhancing:natural capital: defined as all natural resources, both environmental and those of traditional economic value; manufactured capital: made by human kind; including produced goods, infrastructure and built environment; human capital: defined as the health, well-being, intellectual capabilities and spiritual welfare of individuals; and social capital: defined as social relations and institutions within and between societies, their norms and functionality (Ameef, 2002). This paper will endeavour to assess the challenges and opportunities facing the professionals and their Institute in the minerals industry in Australia because the MMSD Global and Regional Australia Reports do not, in the authorÆs opinion, adequately address the æhuman capitalÆ input into the current or future development of the minerals industry, in particular, the sustainability of the professionalsÆ skills, knowledge and experiences in a global context.
