Bleaching clays have been used extensively in the oil-refining industries for a number of years. Their use in water purification is relatively recent and less extensive. They are frequently classified as (1) those naturally active and (2) those active after artificial activation with acid. Fuller's earths fall within the general group of bleaching clays and gradually the commercial term "fuller's earth" has been applied to natural clays originating, for the most part, in the southeastern section of the United States. Bentonitic clays are usually classed as activable and are prevalent in the southwestern section of the United States.l Bleaching clays vary considerably in chemical and physical properties throughout the country, or even in different parts of one deposit (Table 1). The aging behavior of a Cu-Ti (3.2 at. pct Ti) alloy has been followed by electrical resistivity, hardness, and metallographic changes. The resistivity data indicate two principal processes, the first causing a sharp decrease in resistivity, and the second, which occurs over a long period of time, a much smaller rate of decrease. Lamellar nodules, Widmanstätten platelets, and homogeneous continuous precipitation was observed. The Widmanstätten platelets grow at the expense of the latter. When this study was initiated, little information was available on the aging behavior of copper-base titanium alloys. Several articles'-3 that appeared in the early 1930's showed that these alloys could be strengthened by precipitation, but a detailed study was not made. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsyl¬vania, about 1 1/2 miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. In 1936 the Ertsberg story began and its development is a classic example of the courage it takes to discover one mining prospect and bring it into production. Truly, the finding and working of this mine is a modern exception to the overwhelming odds every modern prospector must surmount to be successful. Today, it takes lots of time, plenty of money and the tenacity of a bulldog to whip the laws of nature. Ertsberg ("ore mountain" in Dutch) is literally an elliptically shaped plug of magnetite which erosion has exposed for 560 ft above ground level. The deposit has been likened to an ice cream cone with the outcrop the ice cream, which is above ground, and with the cone buried below the surface. Assaying about 2.5% Cu, the 33 million tons of ore also carry 0.025 oz Au and 0.265 oz Ag per ton.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. While Gunier-Preston zones are growing in Al-4.2 pct Cu at room temperature, Young's modulus, measured dynamically, increases about 0.4 pct. From the change in modulus with time the exponent of time in the rate equation for growth of the zones was deduced to be %. From a comparison of the rates of increase of modulus at 1, 28, and 42°C an activation energy of 12 to 14 Kcal per mole is computed. These findings support the idea that copper atoms are supplied along dislocation channels to growing zones. In alloys the elastic constants will be functions of the distributions of the atoms. If the degree of ordering or clustering is changed, one expects a corresponding change in the elastic constants. A large amount of work has been reported in the literature on reduction of cubes, spheres, or regularly shaped particles of iron ore. Previously, it has been difficult to evaluate these data because no equation has been developed that would yield one or more constants for comparison of overall reduction rates. Iron ore in the process of gaseous reduction is a complex system. The reduction takes place through the series Fe2O3-Fe304-Fe0-Fe. Edstrom and Bit-sianesl have reported that the gas-solid type of reaction was found only at the FeO-Fe interface and that the internal reduction proceeded by elementary diffusion of iron. The investigations of large-grained specimens carried out by Polanyi and Schmid,l Sykes,2 Goucher,3 Yamaguchi,4 Gough, Cox, and Sopwith,5 Carpenter and Elam,6 Aston,7 and others have shown qualitatively that grain boundaries restrain the deformation of adjacent crystals. But whether or not the influence of the grain boundary is confined to the glide planes intersected by the boundary has not been demonstrated in any of these investigations, nor has there been carried out any quantitative analysis of the influence of a boundary on the deformation of a crystal. Indeed, the specimens employed in the previous work contained so many complicating factors that it would have been difficult to observe any variation of the extent of the influence of the grain boundaries in relation to their sizc. THE use of oxygen as a bath reagent in hearth furnaces during the refining period is a familiar story. Investigations and tests in which oxygen was substituted for iron ore to reduce carbon date back 25 years and include the work of Bigge,1 Browne,2 and Chelius.3 During this past year the majority of the experimental work in the use of oxygen was carried on mainly in open-hearth shops, since it was felt that the greater field for application lay in this type of furnace. Much constructive work was done in evaluating the carbon-oxygen relationships, as reported by Slottman and Lounsberry4 and by Hughes.5 Steelmakers using the electric furnace have been actively engaged meanwhile in an experimental program of their own, with such success that the oxygen injection pipe has become a tool in the day to day production of low-carbon and stainless steels.

In the Kennecott Converter Smelting process (KCS), copper concentrate pellets are smelted and converted to high-grade matte in a modified Peirce-Smith converter using oxygen-enriched air and fuel. A high-grade matte bath is produced and maintained in the converter. Periodically, the slag layer is skimmed, slowly cooled, and its copper content is recovered by milling. Ladles of matte are transferred and finished to blister copper in another converter. The gases from the Kennecott Converter contain the SO2 products of the smelting and converting processes and can be treated in an acid plant, eliminating the problem of low-concentration gases associated with the operation of the reverberatory furnace. Pilot tests at Utah Copper Division were followed by a full-scale prototype converter test at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation. The concepts of the process and the results of this campaign are presented.

DURING the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were sug-gested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary.

Meeting of Nov. 20, 1914.-Charles F. Rand was unanimously elected as the representative of the Institute on the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. E. Gybbon. Spilsbury was unanimously elected to succeed himself in January, 1915, on the Library Board of the United Engineering Society. . The President appointed Messrs. Walter Douglas, Charles E. Mills, and L. D. Ricketts as delegates to the seventeenth National Convention of the American Mining Congress, Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 7 to 11, 1914. It was voted that the sum of $857.61, or so much of it as may be necessary, be advanced to the Land Fund from the general funds of the Institute, in anticipation of the collection of unpaid installments of subscriptions to the Land Fund; and that the Treasurer be instructed to pay to Andrew Carnegie at the present. time the sum of $2,500 on account of the Land Fund indebtedness.

BERYLLIUM, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury, have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.1 The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. ThE prediction of the activity coefficient for a solute in a multicomponent liquid metallic solution based on measurements in the related binary systems has been the object of study for some time, particularly in iron-base alloys.1,2 Very few measurements, however, have been made on nonferrous systems; furthermore, measurements made for the specific purpose of testing various prediction equations are almost nonexistent. The measurements here described of the activity coefficient of cadmium in liquid lead alloys were directed toward this goal. One of the most direct means by which the activity coefficient can be calculated has been based on the independent influences of each solute. When solute metals i,j, k, and so forth are present, the activity coefficient, y, of one of these (i for example) may be expressed as a product of factors which represent the effects of each of the other components:

Whereas single particle flotation is considered to be evoked by physico-chemical bubble adhesion, floc flotation seems to be governed by other mechanisms. This study demonstrates that air bubble size does not affect the flotation efficiency of inorganic particles which have been destabilized by different means: 1. addition of simple salts and 2. polyelectrolyte dosage. The air-to-solids ratio A/S does not influence the solids removal efficiency within a broad range of examination. However, there is a significant difference between A/S-values necessary to obtain optimum flotation comparing both destabilization mechanisms. Polyelectrolyte concentration corresponding to complete particle destabilization at the isoelectric point leads to optimum sedimentation rates but not to optimum flotation efficiency. To obtain optimum solids removal by flotation higher polyelectrolyte concentrations are necessary resulting in a positive solids surface charge. These effects are explained on the basis of different floc structures.

Plans are moving ahead toward the July 1965 start-up date for Kaiser Steel Corp.’s new pelletizing plant at its Eagle Mountain, Calif., iron mine. Capacity will be 2 million long tons of pellets containing 65% Fe. A major portion of the output is scheduled for charging into Japanese blast furnaces as the result of a contract to supply Mitsubishi interests with 10.8 million tons of pellets over a six-year period. Kaiser's concentrating plant at Eagle Mountain plus sintering facilities at Fontana are adequate to meet the requirements of its blast furnaces, which, as a consequence, are not expected to take any substantial quantity of pellets during this period. However, some 200,000 tons of pellets per year is scheduled to be used for the production of special steels and in the open hearths as a substitute for the high-cost ores now being used.

Two unique processes of reclaiming zinc from various secondary materials were developed and have successfully been operated for years by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. These processes were established based on the characteristic and local energy conditions; i.e., (1) at Miike Smelter, located above the largest coal deposit in Japan, a combination of slag fuming and semi-blast furnace (MF)processes takes advantage of using coal and the carbon bearing briquette residue from the vertical retort plant as reducing agents, (2) on the other hand, at Kamioka Smelter, a direct reduction of zinc-bearing lead slag by using electric furnaces is of advantage in view of cheap electric power supply from our own hydraulic power plants. The former also consumes lots of zinc bearing fines and drosses from various steel plants, fabricators and secondary zinc smelters, while the latter, zinc leach residue from its own electrolytic plant
