Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross bars used per ton of coal mined and the, percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. Co., Milwaukee)—In reading this article, it was difficult to follow through the example given as a starting point in the derivation of the theoretical equation which relates ball size to feed size. A discussion with F. C. Bond led to the following clarification: Bond postulates that "the breaking force exerted by a ball varies ... as the cube of its diameter . . ." and that the force in pounds per square inch required to break a particle varies ... as its diameter squared." He concludes: "It follows that when a l-in. ball breaks a 1-mm particle, a 2-in. ball will break a 4-mm particle, and a 3-in. ball a 9-mm particle." The above example can be true only for a different set of assumptions. Since the first assumption is apparently true, it is the second that must be revised. The second assumption should read that the breaking force required to break a particle varies as its diameter to the 3/2 power. This relationship was derived in the next paragraph of the article.

Reports on process control computer projects at the Kamioka Plant are summarized from the Japanese technical literature (see references). Fluidized Bed Roaster and Sulfuric Acid plant1 A small process control computer (Yokogawa CCS-200 with an OKITAC 5090P 8K central processor) was installed in the Kamioka smelter in the summer of 1964. A year-and-one-half installation project followed, which successfully brought the roaster and acid converters under computer control. The process plant consisted of two 130 RPD fluosolids roasters and two Monsan to acid units. The roasters are charged with lead-zinc concentrates with SO2 from the roaster processed to sulfuric acid. The computer system provides the following functions: 1) log data from the plant--the input is taken from 50 analog signals, 130 high-low digital alarm points, and 50 analog high- low alarm points; 2) set-point control on 18 control loops; 3) direct digital control (DDC) on eight control loops for which conventional controllers were difficult to adapt due to abnormal loop characteristics or delay times; 4) execution of a safe shut-down procedure

SINCE the equation of continuity governing transient flow of gases through porous media cannot be integrated mathematically into a simple usable expression free from series terms, empirical and approximate equations have been advanced relating cumulative production and future production rates from gas reservoirs with time. In order to check the accuracy of these empirical equations and to obtain an insight into the initial conditions pertinent to the solution of the fundamental equation of continuity, experimental work has been conducted on a vertical 2-in. tube, 91.6 ft. high, packed with unconsolidated Wilcox sand. The results presented in graphical form show the accuracy of the approximate relations. Data from unsteady-flow runs on the 2-in. experimental tube are presented graphically, and are applied to obtain an equation for this specific case, and are offered as an aid in future investigations of this basic equation. The close agreement between equations calculated for steady-state flow and the experiments indicates that the decline of actual gas reservoirs may be treated by an application of these equations without serious error.

Measurements of current efficiency on iron-silicate slags in iron crucibles showed that conduction is about 10 pct ionic in slags with less than 10 pct silica and about 90 pct ionic in slags with more than 34 pct silica, increasing linearly in the intermediate range. The balance of the conduction is electronic in character. Silicate ions are discharged at the anode with the evolution of gaseous oxygen. Transport experiments show that the ionic current is carried almost entirely by ferrous ions, which may be assigned a transport number of one. THERE has been increased evidence in recent years that the constitution of liquid-oxide systems (slags) is ionic.1-3 The principal studies designed to establish the structure of liquid slags have been by electrochemical methods', " and conductivity measurements1,6,7 which also have indicated the presence of semiconduction in several silicate systems1,4-0 and in pure iron oxide.' It is well known that many slag-forming metallic oxides have an ionic lattice type in the solid state, and their properties are determined to a large extent by the lattice defects and ion sizes. As Richardson8 as pointed out, the detailed models of liquid slags cannot be found on thermodynamic data only but "must rest on a proper foundation of compatible structural and thermodynamic knowledge, combined by statistical mechanics." A careful thermodynamic study of the iron-silicate slags has been carried out by Schuhmann with Ensio9 and with Michal.10 They obtained experimental data relating equilibrium CO2: CO ratios to slag composition and made thermodynamic calculations of the activities of FeO and SiO, and of the partial molal heats of solution of FeO and SiO2 in the slags. It was found that the activity-composition relationships deviate considerably from those to be expected from an ideal binary solution of FeO and SiO2. However, the partial molal heat of solution of FeO into the slags was estimated to be zero. Their experimental results were correlated with the constitution diagram for FeO-SiO2 of Bowen and Schairer,11 with the results of Darken and Gurry" on the Fe-O system, and with the work of Darken"' on the Fe-Si-O system. All these studies were found to be consistent with one another. The variation of the mechanism of conduction with composition in the liquid iron-oxide-silica system in the range from pure iron oxide to silica saturation (42 pct SiO2) in iron crucibles was reported in a preliminary note." The current efficiency, or conformance to Faraday's law, showed some ionic conductance at all compositions, the proportion increasing with the concentration of silica. The current-efficiency experiments since have been extended. Furthermore, transport-number measurements have been completed in silica-saturated iron silicates to determine the nature of the conducting ions. Experimental Current Efficiency in Liquid Iron Oxide and Iron Silicates using Iron Anodes: This study was carried out by passing direct current through slags in the range from pure iron oxide to iron oxide saturated with silica (42 pct silica), using pure iron rods as anodes and the iron container as the cathode. A copper coulometer was included in the circuit to indicate the quantity of current passed during electrolysis. Assuming that the cation involved is Fe-+, the theoretical quantity of iron lost from the anode according to Faraday's law may be calculated and when compared with the actual loss observed, gives an indication of the extent to which Faraday's law has been obeyed. It also gives an indication of the presence and extent of ionic conduction in the melt. Preparation of the Slags: About 100 g of chemically pure Fe,O, powder is placed in an iron pot which is heated by induction until the contents liquefy. In this way, FeO is produced according to the reaction Fe2O3 + Fe = 3 FeO. More Fe2O3 or SiO, powder is added and, when a sufficient quantity of molten slag is obtained, the induction unit is turned off, the pot withdrawn, and the molten slag poured on to an iron plate. Homogenization and Electrolysis of the Slag: Apparatus—After considerable development, the setup illustrated in Fig. 1 proved to be quite satisfactory. A is an Armco iron cylinder, 1 in. ID and 1/8 in. wall, consisting of three sections placed one on top of the other. The bottom section is a pot about 5 in. long with a small hole drilled in its bottom to allow withdrawal of gases during evacuation of the apparatus. The middle section is 6 in. long and consists of a pot which serves as the slag container, while the top section is a hollow-cylinder continuation of the slag-container pot. The height of this latter section is about 5 in., giving an overall length of approximately 16 in. Mechanical twins were produced in zone-refined tungsten single crystals by explosive working at room temperature. These twins are parallel to (112) planes and have irregular boundaries rather than the classical plane twin boundaries. These boundaries aye grooved surfaces in which the grooves themselves are parallel to a <111> direction and the sides of the grooves appear to be par-allel to (110) planes. TWINS were produced in tungsten single crystals by explosive working at room temperature. These twins differ in character from any previously reported for tungsten; however, they are similar to those found in molybdenum after compression at -196°C.1 Deformation twins "resembling Neumann bands in ingot iron" have been observed in tungsten by Bech-told and Shewmon.2 This observation was made with sintered polycrystalline tungsten pulled in tension to fracture at 100°C and using a strain rate of 2.8 x 10-4 sec-1. More recently Schadler3 found deformation twins in zone-refined tungsten single crystals pulled in tension at -196"&apos; and -253°C. These tests were conducted using a strain rate of 3.3 x l0-4 sec-1, and the twin bands were found to be parallel to a (112) plane. Deformation twins in tungsten&apos;s sister metal, molybdenum, were observed by Cahn.4 These twins were produced by compressing small (0.7 mm) vapor-deproducedposited molybdenum single crystals at -183°C. The compression was performed &apos;by impact." By the use of precession X-ray techniques, Cahn was able to identify the twin plane as {112} and the shear direction as <1ll>. Mueller and Parker1 produced deformation twins in polycrystalline electron-beam-melted molybdenum by compression at -196°C. Their "loading rate" was 5000 psi per min which, judging from their stress-strain curve, corresponds to a strain rate of approximately 0.3 x 10-4 sec-1. These twin bands were found to be parallel to (1 12) planes; however, they differed in appearance from previously observed twins. In place of straight and parallel twin boundaries they were found to be irregular, jagged, and sawtoothed. The sides of the saw teeth were identified as (110) planes and irrational planes of a (111) zone. The twins observed in the present work in tungsten single crystals are similar in appearance to those of Mueller and Parker in polycrystalline molybdenum. The starting material used in this investigation was 3/16-in. diam commercial tungsten rod produced by powder-metallurgy techniques. This material was converted to a single crystal by the electron-bombardment floating-zone technique.= The process was carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 mm of Hg using a traversing speed of 4 mm per min. Segments (=2 in. long and 3/16 in. in diam) of two crystals (A and B) produced in this manner were studied. Crystal A received one zoning pass, while crystal B received two passes. The two crystals were explosively worked at Bat-telle Memorial Institute in the following manner. A 1/2-in.-thick layer of plastic was applied to the crystals to serve as a buffer in an attempt to prevent cracking. The composite, crystal and buffer, was then wrapped with 1/8-in.-thick DuPont sheet explosive EL506A2 and detonated in water at room temperature. Metallographic samples of the worked crystals were prepared, and back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns were obtained using unfiltered molybdenum radiation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Blasting the crystals as described above failed to prevent cracking. The crystals fractured into several fragments about 3/16 to 1/2 in. long; however, the fragments were of sufficient size to be useful for the subsequent study. The diamond pyramid hardness of the crystals after blasting was in the range 430 to 450 as compared with 340 for the as-melted material, which shows a definite hardening resulting from plastic deformation. These hardness values were obtained using a 1000-g load and taking readings only in sound portions of the crystals free of cracks. The crystals exhibited profuse twinning as shown in Fig. 1. No such structure is present in the as-melted condition. Most of these twins have jagged twin boundaries and are similar in appearance to those found in molybdenum by Mueller and Parker. The twins in both crystals were found to be parallel to {112} planes. This identification was made by using the conventional two-trace method. Subsequent efforts to describe these twins more fully were carried out on crystal A. If the longitudinal axis of crystal A is placed in the (001)-(011)-(Il l) basic triangle of the standard cubic stereographic projection, as in Fig. 2, then the two sets of twins shown in Fig. 1 are parallel to the (112) and (121) planes. An investigation has been made of the radial heat-wave process using a mathematical model in two-dimensional cylindrical coordinates. This model considers combustion, convection and conduction inside the reservoir, but only conduction in the bounding formations. From a study of the general features of the process, an important phenomenon has been revealed, namely, the feedback of heat into the reservoir on the trailing edge of the heat wave. The effects of various process variables on the performance characteristics of the process have also been investigated. It was found that up to the time when the combustion front reaches a given point, the per cent heat loss, provided it is not higher than 40 per cent, is approximately directly proportional to the square root of thermal conductivity arid fuel content, but inversely proportional to the square root of gas-injection rate and oxygen concentration. The effecr of reservoir thickness is more pronounced, since halving the thickness doubles the per cent heat loss. The most decisive factor in determining the center-plane peak temperature is the fuel content of the reservoir. Within the temperature range investigated, doubling the fuel content doubles the peak temperature in the early stage, but the rate of decline of the peak temperature is high. Reservoir thickness is also a very influential factor. The peak temperature is lowered when the thickness is reduced; however, the effect of thickness becomes less pronounced when the thickness is high. Reduction of oxygen concentration increases the peak temperature in the early stage but lowers it afterwards because of the higher rate of decline of the peak temperature. Increase in gas injection rate or decredse in thermal conductivity geives a higher peak temperature which stays high for a longer period. The propagation range of the heat wave is chiefly governed by the fuel content of the reservoir. An increase of 0.2 1b/cu ft in the fuel content increases the propagation range by 100 per cent. The propagation range is more than doubled by doubling the gas injection rate, or reservoir thickness, or by reducing the thermal conductivity by 50 per cent. Comparatively, oxygen concentration has less effect on the propagation range. INTRODUCTION Several investigators have conducted theoretical studies of a radial heat wave. Vogel and Krueger1 studied a system with a moving cylindrical heat source of constant temper- ature, considering conduction in the radial direction only. Ramey2 included conduction in the vertical direction in his studies. Bailey and Larkin2 attacked a more general problem where initial well heating, vertical heat losses and arbitrary frontal velocities were included. In all these studies, however, conduction was considered to be the only means of heat transfer. Bailey and Larkin in a later paper included the effects of convection in a study involving both linear and radial geometries. Vertical heat losses were neglected in the radial case. Katz5 studied a similar problem in a one-dimensional radial model, using a heat-loss coefficient to account for vertical heat losses. Selig and Couch6 mployed a cylindrical model and investigated two limiting cases. In one case they considered no heat loss from the reservoir whereas in the other they assumed a constant temperature at the interface between the reservoir and its bounding formations. Thomas&apos; studied a more general case but assumed a permeable bounding formation so that the convection effect is not confined to the reservoir. In the present work a more realistic and more generalized model is used. It involves a two-dimensional cylindrical system with combustion, convection and conduction inside the reservoir, but only conduction in the bounding formations. The purpose is to establish the temperature distribution both inside and outside the reservoir, to study the general features of the radial heat wave process, and to investigate the effects of various process variables on the performance characteristics of the process. THEORY We fist consider a circular porous reservoir of thickness H extending vertically from y = — H/2 to y = + H/2. The reservoir extends from a well bore radius r, to an external radius re. A stream of oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the reservoir through the wellbore. The oxygen-containing gas reacts with the fuel contained in the reservoir and forms a combustion front wherever the prevailing temperature can support the combustion. It is here assumed that this combustion front constitutes a cylindrical surface source of heat having an infinitesimal thickness in the radial direction and extending vertically throughout the whole thickness H. This is designated as Region I. We next consider a Region II corresponding to the upper and lower formations bounding the reservoir, extending from y = — - to y = — H/2 and from y = + H/2 to y = + m. Since r, is very small, we may assume that the two bounding formations have the same dimensions, symmetric with respect to the center plane of the reservoir. WHEN a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, vet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. The carburizing procedure has been described in an earlier paper;1 it suffices to state here that the carburization lasted about 140 hr. at 760°C. (1760°F.) and 44 hr. at 1110°C. (2030°F.), these periods being long enough-on the basis of the calculations presented later-to ensure that the specimen was about 9.99 per cent saturated at each temperature. The speci¬men was a cylinder about 3.8 cm. long and 0.475 cm. in diameter; the materials were carbonyl iron, a commercial low-metalloid iron, and a steel with 3.6 per cent nickel and the usual proportion of other elements. The fully [carburized] specimen, after cooling at the top of the furnace tube, was placed in a lathe and sandpapered to remove all graphite; then the diameter was measured with a micrometer caliper, and the initial weighing (corresponding to complete saturation) was made. PETROLEUM has been known in Japan since at least 668 A. D., for a picture shows the presentation, during that year, to the Emperor Tenchi (Tenji) of "burning water" and." burning earth" by his subjects from Echigo Province, which today is the largest producer of petroleum in Japan. The burning water was doubtless petroleum and the burning earth either bituminous shale or oil-soaked earth or rock from near the oil seepages. The early methods of getting the oil were simple and similar to methods used today in Japan and in China. Where the seepages occurred, trenches or shallow wells were dug along the seepages and allowed to fill with oil which was then bailed out; in some cases, they filled with oil and water and overflowed. During the 300 years following 1500 A. D:, the use of petroleum in Echigo Province seems to have increased considerably, as compared with earlier centuries, and records show that in 1818 the depth of the wells had been greatly increased. Doubtless, they passed through the seepages and tapped the shallow oil-bearing strata; probably some of these deeper wells were dug before that time. The real value of petroleum was not recognized until early in the Meiji era, which began in 1868, when the Japanese learned that the kerosene that was being imported was derived from petroleum. Guided solely by information obtained from books, they refined the oil and increased the depth of their wells in order to increase the production. The deepest well, dug by hand, about this time was 894 ft.1 (273 m.) and by 1874 the recorded production reached 3499 barrels. In 1876, Benjamin Smith Lyman prepared geological maps of the Echigo oil field, which were the first. of such geological maps made in Japan, and based on these a more enlightened development of the oil fields began; the. Japanese, however, still dug the wells by hand. Toward the end of the &apos;80s, an American well-drilling outfit was secured, but the efforts to use it failed from lack of experience by the operators. Subboundaries may be revealed in aluminum by the formation of pits on the surface during cooling from elevated temperatures. The pits do not form in the vicinity of high- or low-angle boundaries. They are attributed to the condensation of vacancies from a super saturation produced during coolirzg. Using the vacancy pit and Schulz X-ray techniques for observing low-angle boundaries, a study was made of the transition from the nearly perfect seed to the striated structuke characterist-ic of aluminum crystals grown from the melt. It was found that the individual striation boundaries develop by the coalescence of very small-angle boundaries, as well as by the addition of individual dislocations. Several mechanisms for the formation of striations are discussed. Evidence was found suggesting that a super-saturation of vacancies exists near a growing interface, and it is proposed that the resulting climb of existing dislocalions produces "half&apos;-loops" at the interface, which combine to form the low-angle striation boundaries. LINEAGE, or "striation" boundaries, have been studied in detail by Teghtsoonian and Chalmers 1,2 in crystals of tin grown from the melt, and by Atwater and Chalmers3 in lead. They found that single crystals grown from the melt consist of regions which are separated by subboundaries that lie roughly parallel to the growth direction. A difference in orientation of 0.5 to 3 deg exists between the striated regions; the misorientation is such that the lattice of one region could be brought into coincidence with the lattice of its neighbor by a rotation about an axis approximately parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal. They observed an incubation distance for the formation of striations which increased with decreasing growth rate. They also found that in any crystal, the sum of all rotations of the lattice in one sense, in going from one striation to the next, is very nearly equal to the sum of all the rotations in the opposite sense. A striation boundary, which is a low-angle grain boundary, can be described as an array of dislocations. If it is assumed that suitable dislocations are introduced into the crystal during solidification, the formation of striation boundaries can be explained as a result of the migration of the disloca- tions into arrays. The formation of arrays is energetically favorable since the energy of an assembly of dislocations can be reduced by the interaction of the stress fields when a suitable array is formed. This investigation presents and interprets new information concerning the nature and origin of striation boundaries in aluminum. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single crystals of high-purity aluminum (Alcoa 99.992 pct) were prepared by horizontal growth from the melt.&apos;&apos; The specimens were subsequently electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid kept between -10° and 0°C in a bath of dry ice and alcohol. The current density was approximately 6 amps per sq in. Doherty and Davis9 have shown that in aluminum sub-boundaries with misorientations of not less than several seconds of arc may be revealed by the vacancy pit technique. During cooling from elevated temperatures pits form on electropolished surfaces of aluminum crystals as a result of the condensation of vacancies.11 Pits do not form in the vicinity of small- or large-angle grain boundaries, presumably because such boundaries act as sinks for vacancies. Boundaries of misorientations down to 3 sec of arc are revealed as pit-free regions, see Fig. 1. The Schulz X-ray technique12 was used to determine the angular misorientations of subboundaries. In this method, white radiation from a micro-focus X-ray tube is used to produce an image of a fairly large area of a single crystal surface. Subboundaries cause splitting in the diffracted image, see Fig. 2. Misorientations down to about 15 sec of arc may be observed with this technique. OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION Figure 1 shows a striated aluminum crystal grown at 10 cm per hr etched by the vacancy pit technique. An incubation distance of about 1 cm is observed before the initiation of striation boundaries. Fig. 2 is a Schulz X-ray photograph of a striated crystal similar to that shown in Fig. 1. A large area of the crystal was studied by means of a series of photographs. Fig. 2, which is a reflection from the (100) plane, included about the first 4 cm of crystal to freeze. There is an incubation distance of about 1 cm, and a distance of about 2 cm over which the angle of misorientation builds up to its final value of approximately one degree. The equilibrium sulfur distribution between molten iron and Ca0-Mg0-Al203 slags containing iron oxide was investigated at 1550°C. The results were used to derive the iron oxide activities at low iron oxide concentrations in the slag by combining the sulfide capacity data obtained from gas-slag work with the free energies of both the sulfur solution in iron and the iron oxide formation in slag. The derived ferrous oxide activities were compared with values based on Tem-kin&apos;s kin&apos;s and Flood&apos;s ionic models. One difficulty in using these models is that the nature of the aluminate ion in slag is uncertain. Nevertheless, such indirect methods, in particular, those described in the present paper, are of value because of the difficulty of measuring small amounts of oxygen in liquid iron in equilibrium with slag. It is shown that these methods confirm the consistency of thermodynamics data on liquid iron and slags. It is well established that decreasing the iron oxide activity in the slag increases the desulfurization of molten iron at constant slag basicity. This effect is most pronounced at the very low iron oxide activities, characteristic of blast furnace slags. Yet a precise quantitative determination of the significance of low iron oxide contents in slag in blast furnace desulfuri-zation is not possible for the following reasons: a) difficulty of separation of iron "shots" from the slag, and b) errors in chemical analysis of small amounts of iron oxide in slags. In view of these obstacles, one must resort to indirect methods of calculating iron oxide activities. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The apparatus for providing the sulfur equilibrium data has been described previously1 and was similar to that used by ell&apos; in connection with the study of slag-metal manganese equilibrium. The procedure consisted of: a) melting about 50 g of Armco iron in a magnesia crucible in a platinum furnace, b) adding a mixture of about 15 g of lime-alumina slag and varying amounts of Fe2O3 and CaS, and c) maintaining the temperature at 1550°C for more than an hour in an atmosphere of argon to enable the sulfur equilibrium to be attained. Several melts were made using lime-alumina slags with basic composition 55, 50, and 45 pct lime. During the experiment the temperature was controlled manually using a Pt/10 pet Rh-Pt thermocouple. After the experiment, the Power was shut off and the flow rate of argon was increased to freeze the melt as quickly as possible. The analysis of sulfur in the metal was carried out by the oxygen combustion method3 using uniform drillings from the top and bottom of the metal button. After crushing and grinding and removal of any iron particles with the aid of a hand magnet, the slag was analyzed for sulfur by the CO2 combustion method.4 The E.D.T.A. method was employed for the analysis of lime5,6 and magnesia,= the ceric sulfate method7 for the analysis of slag iron oxide, and the perchloric acid dehydration method5 for the analysis of silica. The remaining amount was taken to be Al2O3 precipitation with ammonium hydroxide in several preliminary melts had confirmed the propriety of using this simple procedure. RESULTS The activity of iron oxide in binary, ternary, and more complex slags has been the object of numerous investigations, and the two experimental methods for its determination are: 1) Equilibrating the metal with the slag in question and measuring the oxygen content of the metal. The ferrous oxide activity is then given by aFeO L%OJSat where [%0]sat is the oxygen content of the metal in equilibrium with pure iron oxide slag. This method was used by Chipman et al.8,9 2) Equilibrating the slag in iron crucibles with known partial pressures of H2/H2O or CO/CO2 mix-tures.10-12 This method is limited to temperatures between 1265" and 1500°C. The very low oxygen content of the melts in this investigation made it impossible to derive the ferrous oxide activity by the first of these methods. Therefore, the iron oxide activities were computed by means of: Sulfide capacity data from the gas-slag work" Temkin&apos;s concept14 Flood&apos;s approach15 a FeO from Sulfide Capacity. The method of calculating the aFeO involves the sulfide capacity of the slag (c,), the sulfur distribution coefficient (Ls), the free energy of dissolution of sulfur in iron, and the free energy of formation of iron oxide in the slag. Bell and Kalyanram13 have investigated the sulfur absorption characteristics of lime-alumina slags containing magnesia by the Carter-Macfarlane method16 (based on comparing the sulfide capacity of the slag in question with that of a standard slag of unit lime activity) and have derived lime activity values. Walter Renton Ingalls recently gave a very interesting talk before the student mining society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In it he showed the present status of mining as he sees it. In the talk he explained that, while discoveries of great mining districts are still pssible, they are being made less and less often; that the great mining companies, although there are large numbers of mines offered for sale, are finding it less and less possible to find new mines that are up to the standard of richness that they wish for purchase. The natural conclusion is that better, cheaper, and more efficient methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting are needed if the lower-grade mines are to be worked at a profit. This is true also if the high-grade mines are to yield their greatest profit. This paper deals only with the concentrating or ore-dressing problem, and gives some thoughts which point towards greater profit. In a paper on The Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus the writer showed that there were two main lines of work that would lead to greater saving, lower tailing assay, and, therefore, greater profit. The first is the recrushing of middling or tailing products for the saving of the contained values. This is well understood and largely carried out in existing mills. The second is the saving of fine free mineral at the first opportunity. This is a matter less well understood in the mills, and to dwell upon this the present paper is written. The writer is himself convinced and hopes to convince the reader that, for obtaining the above result, not only is better classification needed, but also more classification; that is, there should be more spigots or pockets to the classifier. His attention was recently called to a small mill which had a three-pocket cone classifier fed with from 2 to 0 mm. stuff, supplying feed to four Wilfley tables. The first spigot had about all the

Introduction Soda ash, anhydrous sodium carbonate, is produced from underground trona deposits occurring in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. Stauffer Chemical Co. of Wyoming, a jointly owned subsidiary of Stauffer Chemical Co. and Rocky Mountain Energy Co., mines the trona and processes it into high-purity soda ash. Stauffer Wyoming has been in operation since 1962 with a current production capacity of about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) per year of soda ash. The refinery has five parallel operating trains using the monohydrate process which is a series of chemical processing unit operations described below. Screening and Crushing The mined trona is brought to the surface in two counterbalancing ore skips. The ore is initially screened with refinery feed (less than peagravel size material) entering the process. Oversize is conveyed to an outdoor stockpile. Ore is recycled from under the stockpile via cone feeders as the refinery needs require. The ore is conveyed to hammer type crushers and screened. The refinery feed enters the process and the oversize is recycled to the crushers. Calcining The first step in refining trona to soda ash is calcining the trona ore. This is accomplished in concurrent flow, rotary kilns that are direct fired with natural gas. [2 (Na CO NaHCO 2H O) Heat 3Na CO + 5H20 + CO 2 3~3~ 2 ~~2 32] The trona ore is fed to the kiln at the burner end and is intimately mixed with the hot exhaust gases from the burner. Direct contact with the flame is avoided. The ore moves down the kiln by gravity and rotation aided by the kiln&apos;s internal lifters. The exhaust gases are cleaned to 99 + % particulate removal and discharged to the atmosphere. Dissolving the Calcined Trona The calcined trona is conveyed from the kiln discharge to a rotary drum dissolver where it is mixed with water and weak solution (unsaturated solution of calcined trona in water). The calcined trona is soluble whereas the impurities, primarily shale, are insoluble. The discharge from the dissolver is a slurry containing saturated solution (about 30% dissolved calcined trona in water), some undissolved calcined trona, insoluble impurities, and organic impurities. The dissolver discharge enters a rake classifier that makes the first solid/liquid separation in the process by removing the heavy undissolved material from the saturated solution. This undissolved material is conveyed to a second rotary drum dissolver and mixed with water to dissolve any remaining calcined trona. The secondary dissolver discharges to a second rake classifier that separates the solids from the liquid. The solids are now primarily insoluble impurities with very little unrecovered calcined trona. These wastes are conveyed to evaporation ponds for disposal. The liquid from the secondary rake is recycled to the primary dissolvers&apos; weak solution system. Returning to the primary rake classifier, the saturated solution which contains suspended insoluble muds is pumped to a thickener. Flocculant is added to aid settling of the suspended muds. The flocculated muds are collected at the bottom of the thickener and pumped to vacuum cloth filters. The adhering saturated solution is separated from the muds that remain on the filter cloth. The recovered solution is returned to the dissolvers&apos; weak solution system. The muds are reslurried and pumped to the evaporation ponds for disposal. Saturated solution, containing some suspended insoluble muds along with the organic impurities, overflows the thickener. Filtering the Saturated Solution The saturated solution overflowing the thickener enters a holding tank where it is pumped to a bank of pressure leaf filters. The suspended muds are captured on the filter leaves while the cleaned saturated solution is pumped to polishing filters. The polishing filters are also leaf pressure type, intended to remove any suspended solids that may pass the primary filters. Organic impurities are removed with activated carbon. The purified solution is now free of insoluble muds and has most of the organic impurities removed. Crystallizing and Drying the Monohydrate The purified saturated solution is pumped to evaporative crystallizers. The solution is circulated from the crystallizer vessel through a heat exchanger. Indirect contact with steam in the heat exchanger causes the saturated solution to boil, thus crystallizing the soda ash in its monohydrate form. Slurry crystal density is maintained in the crystallizer by simulta¬neous feed of fresh saturated solution and drawoff of the slurry.

In silver alloys containing less than 0.2 wt pet Cu. the reaction 9 + 1/2 0, = CuO(s) was found to proceed to equilibrium between 700o and 808oC. From measurements of the equilibrium dissociation pressures of the CuO at several temperatures, the differential heat of solution and the activity coeflicients for copper in silver were calculated. These values were found to be in reasonable agreement with those calculated from data appearing in the literature. A metastable "copper oxide" with an atom ratio of oxygen to copper as high as 1.7 was formed by internal oxidation at 300°C of these same dilute Ag-Cu alloys. No anomalous behavior was noted in the temperature dependence of oxygen solubility in silver. The solubility minima between 300" and 800°C reported several years ago can be accounted for, at least in part, by reactions with trace impurities, such as copper. Cold-worked siloer exhibits an enhanced permeability to oxygen. THIS investigation was undertaken because of our interest in interactions between solute and lattice defects in metals. The reason for the choice of the O-Ag system for study is the anomaly in the solubility of oxygen in silver reported by Steacie and Johnson1 in 1926, specifically that isobars between 100 and 800 Torr show solubility minima at 400°C. It was also claimed that the copper impurity in the silver was not responsible for the minima. Recently, Eichenauer and Müller2 proposed that surface adsorption might have been responsible for this solubility anomaly, but no adsorption isotherms are available to check the pressure and temperature dependence observed at the low temperatures. Surface-tension measurements on silver made by Buttner, Funk, and udin3 suggest that a considerable fraction of a monolayer of oxygen exists on silver at 922°C and at an oxygen pressure of 150 Torr. To account for the pressure sensitivity reported by Steacie and Johnson1 at 300°C, the oxygen bound to the surface at 922°C cannot be considered relevant; the existence of a surface layer at 300°C characterized by a lower energy of binding would be required to explain the effect. All of our attempts to detect an interaction of this type with surface sites have failed. In this investigation we have not been able to associate the dissolution of oxygen in silver with a dislocation interaction. Evidently, severely cold-worked silver does not contain a sufficient number of trapping -sites for oxygen. Indeed, our work shows that oxidation of trace impurities in the silver was probably responsible for Steacie and Johnson&apos;s results. In addition, we have been able to establish the nature of the reaction with copper impurity in silver by thermodynamic considerations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Measurements of both the internal oxidation rates and the solubility were made volumetric ally in a system equipped with a gas burette, a mercury manometer, a McLeod Gage, and a mass spectrometer. The silver and the silver-alloy samples were protected from contamination by mercury vapor from our pressure gages by suitably placed refrigerated (-78°C) traps. Silica reaction vessels were employed for experiments performed above 500°C. Spectroscopically pure gases were used in this investigation. The highest-purity silver used in the solubility measurements was 99.999 pet. By chemical analysis 2 ppm of Cu were found in this silver. The two Ag-Cu alloys used in this research were made up to 0.14 and 0.15 wt pet Cu starting with 99.999 pet Ag. An unexpected source of error was discovered in the course of the work. At temperatures near 800°C silver distilled from the hot silica reaction tubes into cooler regions of our system. Although the weight loss of silver from the sample was not important in itself, oxygen was being consumed by the silver distilled into the cooler part of the system to form a stable oxide phase from which the oxygen was not recovered. In a separate experiment conducted to determine the necessary correction, losses between 0.2 and 0.3 cu cm (stp) of 0, in 24 hr were measured at 810°C. Some of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized statement of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey&apos;s Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part discusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have contributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways. General Geology Pre-Cambrian Rocks.—The oldest rocks in the district are schists, correlated with the Idaho Springs formation of the Front Range. Quartz-mica schist predominates, but other types occur locally; almost everywhere the rocks show considerable lit-par-lit injection. Intrusive into the schists are two varieties of granite, only one of which is widespread. It is a fine-grained, porphyritie, gray granite correlated with the Silver Plume granite of the Front Range. Sixteen executives, technicians and operative personnel from the French mining industry, now touring mining operations in the U.S., will wind up their visit to this country at the AIME Annual Meeting. Traveling under ECA auspices, they will be in Denver on Feb. 5, Salt Lake City, Feb. 8 to 13, Bonne Terre on Feb. 16. Four of the group are engaged in bauxite mining, nine in lead and zinc, two in pyrites mining. All are interested in American mining equipment and methods, and hope to contact manufacturers&apos; representatives in the various areas they visit. A $600,000 manganese pilot plant is expected to be put into operation by Sept. 1, by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev. S. R. Zimmerly, chief of the Bureau&apos;s metallurgical div. for the region, recently completed the mill design and flow sheet; and the Bureau is awaiting steel priorities before building. Ore from the Artillery Peak area, 60 miles south-west of Kingman, Ariz., will be used in the mill. Construction will be handled by Rex Lloyd of Boulder City.
