A new $18-million hydrometallurgical ore treatment facility for the recovery of molybdenum oxide was dedicated at Climax, Colo., on November 19 by Climax Molybdenum Co., division of AMAX. The Company has been producing molybdenum from molybdenite (MoS2) ores since 1918. Now oxide values, formerly lost in the sulfide flotation plant tailing are to be processed to yield about 3 million Ib per year of metal. In 1965, Climax produced about 50% of world molybdenum from sulfide ore. This ore is mined at the rate of 42,000 tpd. The annual production of concentrate is 100 million lb containing 90% to 92% MoS2, or about 50 million lb of metal. As only a relatively small portion of the total Climax production is sufficiently enriched in oxide molybdenum to process through the new plant, 5700 tpd of selected ore containing 1.5 lb of Mo per ton is now treated by the new process.

A unique and reproducible method is presented for the determination of water vapor in tough pitch wire bar copper. The procedure involves reduction of the water vapor with molten aluminum to form hydrogen, which is subsequently measured by mass spectroscopy. Average water vapor pressures within the porosities of the wire bar samples are calculated. Correlation is to exist between the specific gravities of the samples and their measured water vapor contents. The method should find application as a very sensitive means of detecting hydrogen embrittlement in copper. The nature and quantity of gases evolved and retained during the horizontal casting of tough pitch wire bar copper have long been of interest to the metallurgist. Considerable work has been done at this laboratory on the determination of these gases. The work has involved not only qualitative but also quantitative analysis, so as to provide a basis for a total accounting of the porosity which is associated with the cast product. From a knowledge of the gas-forming elements within the copper, and the practice of melting and protecting it with a reducing flame followed by contact with a charcoal cover in the casting ladle, the gases which one might expect to find in the pores of the cast product are sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and water vapor. Hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, and hydrocarbons would be other possibilities; however vacuum fusion-mass spectroscopy techniques employed at this laboratory have shown that no hydrogen sulfide and only traces of nitrogen and methane are present. It is highly improbable according to phillipsl that any sulfur dioxide could be evolved in wire bar copper with 10 ppm or less sulfur under normal freezing conditions. Mackay and smith2 have noted that porosity due to sulfur dioxide only becomes noticeable at concentrations above 20 ppm S. Investigation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by a variation in the method of Bever and Floe showed that these two gases could only account, at 760 mm and 1064°C (Cu-Cua eutectic temperature), for a maximum of about 25 pct of the total porosity in a wire bar having a specific gravity of 8.40 g per cu cm. phillips' has noted that no normal furnace atmosphere is ever sufficiently rich in hydrogen to cause porosity in copper from hydrogen alone. In addition, using a hot vacuum extraction technique for hydrogen,4 values have never been observed in excess of 10 ppb in tough pitch wire bar. On the basis of the preceding considerations of gases in tough pitch wire bar, only water vapor is left to account for the major portion of the porosity. Direct determinations of water vapor are virtually impossible at low concentrations by any presently known technique, due to adsorption and desorption within the walls of the apparatus used.5 The present investigation deals with a method for the determination of water vapor by an indirect procedure, using molten aluminum as a reducing agent to form hydrogen according to the reaction: 2A1 + 3H2O — A12O3 + 3H2 The evolved hydrogen can then be measured quantitatively by mass spectroscopy. EXPERIMENTAL A 10-g piece of 99.9+ pct A1 was charged into a porous alumina crucible (Laboratory Equipment Co., No. 528-30). Fig. 1 shows the crucible in place at the bottom of an 8-in.-long quartz thimble. A funnel tube with two l1/8-in.-OD sidearms extending at a 90-deg angle from each other was attached to the top of the thimble. One of the sidearms was joined to the inlet system of the mass spectrometer (Consolidated Electrodynamics Corp. Model 21-620A) via a mercury diffusion pump situated between two dry-ice traps. The copper samples were placed in the other sidearm, followed by a glass-enclosed magnetic stirring bar for pushing the samples into the crucible. All ground joints were sealed with vacuum-grade wax. The entire system was evacuated and the aluminum was heated with a T-2.5 Lepel High Frequency Induction Furnace for 21/2 hr at a temperature visually estimated to be 900°C. The temperature was then lowered and the hydrogen was monitored on the mass spectrometer until it was given off at a constant rate of about 4 to 5 1 per hr. This rate corresponded to a slope of 2 to 3 divisions per min on the X3 attenuation of a 10-mv recorder at a hydrogen sensitivity of approximately 100 divisions per 1. RCENTLY, in investigating the high-temperature creep properties of an aluminum, SAP-type alloy, MD 2100, fabricated by Professor F. V. Lenel of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Ansell and Weertman1 found unusually low creep rates. These creep rates are 4 or 5 orders of magnitude lower than is predicted by the slowest creep mechanism based upon dispersion-hardened alloy theory. They ascribed these results to a lack of both normal active dislocation sources and a continuous three-dimensional dislocation network. If one couples these results with the following factors of production and microstructure: 1) The compacted and sintered aluminum powder compact is hot-extruded, with an extrusion ratio of 25:1.2 2) The alyminum oxide particles are approximately 140A units thick, and have a spacing varying from 0.05 to 1.5 1. 3 3) The alloy has plate-shaped grains with minor axes of about 5 X 10 -3 mm and major axes several orders of magnitude greater than this.'

F. G. SMITH.-Probably someone will ask whether I discovered why the bottoms of the large shells broke out. I did not, as a result of this investigation. An experiment was made along the lines indicated in this paper, to determine whether abnormal grains greatly affected the physical properties of brass. Two ordinary test bars were annealed for 1/2 hr. at 750° C. and physical properties determined on one. The other was covered with indentations made with a peen hammer and then reannealed. for 5 hr. at 750° C. It was found in the tensile test to be made up of large grains 1/4 to 1/2 in. in diameter. The physical properties, however, differed from those of the first bar only as much as might be expected after a 5 hr. anneal under normal conditions. It appears then that the large grains produced in this manner do not ruin the physical qualities of the brass.

INITIAL development of the south orebody at San Manuel is being carried out from the No. 1 and No. 2 shafts. The haulage and grizzly levels are being driven to develop the upper one third of the massive hydrothermally altered and fractured monzonite orebody. This first haulage level has been placed at the 1475-ft level with a grizzly level 60 ft above. The grizzly level will be connected to all service shafts so that men and supplies can come down to the grizzly level and go to working places without congesting the haulage level. These connections are also a vital part of the ventilation plan. The haulage level is being advanced along the north and south fringes of the orebody and connections are being driven to the three shafts now under construction. The No. 1 and No. 2 shafts will serve the development work with supplies, skip hoisting, and ventilation at each shaft and the two shafts are connected on both the grizzly and haulage level.

The No. 2 unit of the West Mill of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co., which went into commission Apr. 17, 1912, is structurally a twin of the No. 1 unit, which was started Nov. 9, 1909. Up to the point where the ore enters the concentrating-de-partment, it follows precisely the process described by G. Cae-tani in his article entitled, Milling of Lead-Silver Ores,' under the heading, Preparation of the Mill-Ore. The process from this point forward, in the No. 2 section, is outlined on the accompanying flow-sheet. In describing it I shall attempt to analyze the products of each separate process. The constancy of the tonnage and the uniformity of the quality of the feed render this practicable. No. 1.—550 tons of feed, all having passed 30 mm., is washed into two 15-mm. trommels, 4 ft, in diameter, 60 in. long, 17 rev. per min., 1 in. slope, 3/8-in. gauge steel.

SINCE the introduction of the improved method of precipitating gold from chlorine solution by SO2 and H2S at the Golden Reward chlorination-works, Deadwood, S. D.,* this modern method has been further adopted in the chlorination-works of the Portland Consolidated Company at Deadwood, and in those of the Black Hills Milling and Smelting Company at Rapid City, S. D. It has proved practically most successful in the handling of large quantities of gold solution, and constitutes up to date, with Mr. John E. Rothwell's most important improvement, namely, barrel-leaching under hydraulic pressure, the principal progress made in gold chlorination. The method of refining the gold sulphides which result from this method of precipitation, was introduced by me in 1890 at the Golden Reward works, and in 1892 at those of the Black Hills Company. It has not suffered any changes during the last three years, and is substantially as described below:

We did install one 100% brick bottom in our #33 furnace which is basically the same design as Inland's furnace. We had previously embarked on a program of replacing all bottoms in our 300 ton furnaces every 2nd campaign which would be about every 2000 - 2300 heats. This had been necessitated by the effect of our rather high oxygen blowing rates and our desire to maintain a minimum bottom interval level. This meant that we were able to compare bottom performance of various types of materials on a realistic bas is. Since furnace availability is critical to our operation, we are organized to employ every piece of equipment and all the necessary man power to complete a rebuild in the shortest possible time. A 300 ton furnace requires 7.5 days to rebuild. If a new bottom is to be installed an additional 2.5 days is added - 24 hours for tear out and 36 hours for bricklaying - making a total of 10 days.

In 1944, Illinois produced 77,413,000 bbl. of oil, or 4.6 per cent of the total for the United States, and continued to rank sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decrease of 6 per cent from 1943, when- the total Illinois production was 82,256,000 bbl. This decrease was much less than the 23 per cent decrease in 1943 from production of the previous year. The principal factor in arresting the production declinc, which had been going on since 1941, seems to be the increased drilling that followed the relaxing of the Federal Government's rules in regard to well spacing. The daily average production for 1944 was approximately 212,000 bbl. Of the 1991 wells, 430 are classified as "wildcat" as compared with 461 in 1943. Twenty-eight new pools (Table 2 A) were discovered in 1944 as compared with 29 in 1943. Changes in federal drilling regulations, permitting closer spacing of wells, resulted in a drilling program that emphasized development of proved acreage rather than wildcatting. Data on production and drilling by fields are given in Table I; data on annual production and drilling for Illinois, in Table 3. Discoveries Twenty-eight new fields (Table 2 A), 42 extensions (Table 2 B), and 39 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 2 C) were discovered in 16 counties in Illinois during 1944. Of the 28 new fields, one was abandoned during the year, 14 were one-well fields, eight others had not more than 6 wells, one had 8, one had 9, one had 11, one had 15, and the largest new field, Roaches North, had 28 producing wells at the end of the year. In all, 109 wells were producing in these new fields on Jan. 2, 1945, as compared with 111 wells producing from 29 new fields at the end of 1943. . The average initial production of the discovery wells of the 28 new fields was 129 bbl. of oil and II bbl. of water, a notable decline from the average initial production of 194 bbl, of oil and 15 bbl. of salt water for the 1943 discovery wells. In fields discovered since 1936, the total number of oil wells producing at the end of 1944 was 12,335. Productive Acreage The area of proved production in the new fields (discovered since 1936) increased from 144,335 acres at the end of 1943 to 173,485 acres at the end of 1944 (Table I), an increase of 29,150 acres. Of this increased area, 1720 acres are in fields discovered during 1944 and 27,430 acres are in extensions of fields discovered earlier.

J. W. Tomlison—It seems probable that the author's conclusion, that the conductivity of the slags decreases with increasing content of FeO, is erroneous due to the method of plotting the data. Thus, the results of other workers2,3,13,15 show that the conductivity of molten oxide slags increase with increasing temperature, indicating that the trend of the curve shown by the authors is due to the fact that the data for the slags containing relatively small amounts of FeO are at higher temperatures than those for the slags containing relatively large amounts of this oxide. In this connection the work of Wejnarth2 may be mentioned in which in an investigation of a series of iron silicate slags, the conductivity was found to increase with increasing content of FeO; the fact that the author's slags contained TiO2 probably does not affect the issue since it has been shown15,16 that, at least as far as conductivity is concerned, this oxide behaves essentially the same as silica and that mixtures of the oxide with silica have a very low conductivity of the order of 10-4 mhos at 1750°C. In connection with the experimental technique it may be noted that bubbles of carbon monoxide would probably be produced at the surface of the graphite electrodes in contact with the melts thus rendering the accuracy of the measurements somewhat open to question. J. L. Wyatt (author's reply)—Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to works by Martin and Derge, which indicate that slag systems containing no TiO2 are characterized by an increase in conductivity with an increase in temperature. Further, I have cited his examples, which indicate a drastic increase with small temperature change. The results of Dr. Derge's work have no bearing whatsoever on the results of this paper, since the slags under study here contained up to 70 pct TiO2 One cannot generalize on slag systems as a whole on the basis of any one family, for there are definite compounds of ionic nature formed in each system, and the ionic mobilization of these is something that cannot be determined without actual experimentation. Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to an unpublished work which, he claims, shows that titanium dioxide behaves the same as silica in regard to conductivity. Since I have not had 'an opportunity to see the paper I cannot make any comments, but unless the same slag system was studied there can be no specific comparison of results. If the decrease in conductivity of the slag was due entirely to temperature phenomena, as Dr. Tomlinson indicates, then one is without an explanation of the values shown in the paper for slags containing from 10 to 20 pct FeO. I cannot agree that the deviation in findings was appreciably related to temperature change; further, I believe this point was completely covered in the paper. Lime, the "versatile chemical," is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or calcia, or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to much confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is usually made from high-calcium or high-magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high-calcium limes contain less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high-magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 A.D. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from a scientific perspective. The production of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 15 to 20 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the lime/limestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting in a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [CaCO3 (limestone) + heat (1000° to 1300°C)= 100 CaO (quicklime) + CO2 T 5644 or CaCO3 • MgCO3 (limestone) 10084 + heat (900°C to 1200°C) CaO • MgO (quicklime) + 2CO2 T 56 4088] While there is nearly universal agreement about the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in Fig. 1. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO2 pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the reaction interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Therefore, because calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in

Colloidal silica dissolved in aqueous suspensions of high surface area thoria was permitted to adsorb on the thoria surface. Silica in three forms was identified by means of infrared spectroscopy and characterized by Si-O vibrational modes in the 9.0 to 10.5 region. A band at 9. 1 was attributed to free unad-sorbed silica, while adsorbed silica resulted in bands of greatest absorbency at 9.4 or 10.3p, depending upon the character of the surface bonding. Size considerations, the amount of silica adsorbed, and the character of the infrared spectrum for strongly adsorbed silica has been interpreted as evidence of formation of chain or layer silica linkages on the thoria surface. Infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully in recent years for the identification of minerals and synthetic inorganic substances. Unfortunately, infrared studies of silicate minerals have not proceeded to the point that unambiguous assignments may be made for Si-O vibrational modes as affected by lattice substitutions and structures. Several investigators have presented infrared spectra of silicate minerals, 1,7 and their work has pointed to the potential value of infrared to identify minerals as well as to note the sensitivity of various Si-O modes to structural and substitutional environments. The strong infrared absorption of various Si-O vibrational modes makes the infrared method a very useful tool for the study of silica adsorbed on the surface of solids of high surface area. Spaepen et a18 studied the adsorption of silica on thoria surfaces from aqueous solutions of silicic acid up to 300°C. A general review of the application of the infrared method to the study of surface adsorption has been presented by Pliskin and Eischens.9 EXPERIMENTAL Du Pont colloidal silica, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) and Ludox HS (30.25% SiO2) in aqueous suspensions were used as the sources of silica for the adsorption studies. The thoria used for this study was supplied by Union Carbide Nuclear Co.* under the preparation *Chemical Technology Div., Union Carbide Nuclear Co., Oak Ridge, Tenn. . number D-16-650. It was fired from the oxalate at 650°C and had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 m2 per g measured by nitrogen adsorption. The chemical analysis of the D-16 thoria in ppm was: CO3= (5500), NO3- (< 4), so4±PO4 (100), and Si (20). The Ludox silica was placed in contact with the thoria in a two-liter autoclave10 between room temperature and 250°C. Slurries were made by placing 1 g of thoria in one liter of distilled water containing various additions of the silica sol. Samples were removed from the autoclave by opening a small stainless steel valve. Extracted samples were centrifuged for 10 min and excess solution was decanted. The sample was then dried for several hours at 80°C. Infrared samples were prepared by thoroughly mixing 10 mg of the thoria with 400 mg KBr in polystyrene vials on a "Wig-L-Bug" amalgamator. This paper presents a reservoir engineering analysis of the performance data for a waterflooding project in the Johnson Lease, South Ward field. This type of engineering analysis adds to the knowledge of the mechanics of water flooding. This study reveals that in general (a) high ultimate areal sweep-out efficiencies (95 to 100 per cent) can be expected, and (b) cross-flow among strata of different permeabilities during the fill-up phase can have an important influence on the behavior and should be dealt with in studying reservoirs for water flooding. The analysis further showed that the recovery predictions based on what was considered a consistent interpretation of core data and logs were low because little contribution was assumed from the low permeability, oil-bearing sand sections which have apparently yielded considerable waterflood oil. This project has yielded in excess of 2 1/2 times as much oil by water flooding as by primary depletion. These very favorable results were achieved without the use of any special injection well completion techniques. However, all of the low permeability material war included in the section open to injection despite its poor estimated primary yield. LEASE PERFORMANCE HISTORY The South Ward field lies in the southeast corner of Ward County near the southern tip of the tremendous Yates trend. Deposition of sand bodies along the seashore reefs during the latter part of the Permian period established what have turned out to be ideal conditions to form a great number of independent productive sands. Probably, these reservoirs in Ward and Winkler counties are providing operators with some of the nation&apos;s richest sources of secondary oil reserves through the use of waterflooding techniques. In South Ward field water has been very successfully used to flood oil from the Bennett sand occurring at a depth of about 2,300 to 2,400 ft. About 150 ft above the Bennett sand reservoir, the Grand Falls sand produced gas from a large cap extending over most of the field. The Atlantic Refining Co.&apos;s 320-acre W. D. Johnson lease (Fig. 1) is on the northwest edge of the structure with only gas cap apparently present in the Grand Falls sand. The Bennett sand under this lease is oil productive, however, having a gross sand thickness averaging about 80 ft with a net of 18 ft of fairly clean, highly permeable sand, and about 36 ft of oil-bearing sand with low permeability and high water saturation. The lower permeability sand is interbedded with numerous layers of lime, shale, and anhydrite. Radioactivity logs from 12 wells and cores from two, examples of which are shown in Fig. 2, reveal that the total Bennett sand pore volume is about 71,000 bbl/acre. The estimated initial water saturation averages 41 per cent in the 54 ft of sand considered to contain oil; thus, also considering an estimated 18 per cent oil shrinkage, the lease originally contained about 34,000 bbl of oil per acre. Original pressure was probably about 1,400 psig. PVT correlations indicate that the reservoir fluid was originally saturated with gas. After discovery of the field in 1930, Atlantic completed the first well on the Johnson lease in March,

Using an alumina or zirconia crucible with an alumina sinker or a molybdenum sinker coated with zirconium dioxide, the density of liquid iron was determined by the immersed-sinker method over the temperature range of 1800" to 2500°K. The density, with respect to temperature, is ex-Dressed by the equation Dg/cm = 8.523 - 8.358 X 10 T&apos;K The molar Volumes and thermal coefficients of expansion were calculated. Iron, upon me1ting, was found to expand 3.5 pct. A basic knowledge of the physical properties of materials at high temperatures is becoming increasingly important. A check of the literature shows, that in spite of the importance of iron, very few measurements have been made of its physical properties in the liquid state. Density measurements have been made by Benedicks and his collaborators1g using the method of balanced columns, by Desch and smith4 using the immersed sinker method with an alumina sinker, by Lucas using the maximum bubble method5 and by Stott and endall&apos; who used an alumina pyknometer. In the method of balanced columns, the difference in level of molten iron in two arms of a U-tube, together with the corresponding difference of pressure had to be measured. The formation of gas bubbles in one or both arms was a great source of error. These values are very erratic. They vary from 6.83 to 7.45 g per cm3 at the melting point (1805"~) and from 6.45 to 7.15 g per cm3 at 1890°K. Stott and Rendall determined the density at 1837"K, with a reproducibility of *0.2 pct. They used an alumina pyknometer fired to 1973°K. The vessel was filled in a vacuum furnace by immersion in the liquid metal. When thermal equilibrium was attained, the pyknometer was withdrawn, cooled, the ingot removed and then weighed. The chief disadvantage of the method was the difficulty of inserting the pyknometer without cracking it. The authors have been able to determine the density of liquid iron from its melting point up to 2500°K, by using the immersed-sinker method, with A1203 or ZrOz crucibles and A1203 or molybdenum sinkers coated with Zr02, Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. In these studies the source of heat was the carbon tube resistance furnace with an argon atmosphere described previously.7 Experimental runs were made using either Ala3 or ZrOz crucibles. The sinkers used were 1) pure A1a3 and 2) molybdenum coated with ZrOz. The crucible, 2 1/8 in. in diam and 3 in. high, was centered in the furnace on an Ala3 of Zr02 pedestal. The sinker, 1/2 in. in diam and 1 1/2 in. long, together with a counter weight, was suspended from an analytical balance into the melt by a molybdenum wire. Procedure. DISPERSION hardening as an alloying process has aroused increasing interest in the past few years. This alloying procedure, in which an insoluble phase is dispersed randomly through a metal or alloy, is believed to be especially suited for the attainment of creep strength at elevated temperatures since the dispersed phase is metallurgically stable. Another advantage is that the physical properties of the matrix phase, such as electrical conductivity, remain relatively unaffected by alloying. These two characteristics resulted in interest in the applicability of dispersion hardening to copper and copper alloys. A study of copper alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods has shown some strengthening from oxide dispersions.&apos; However, powder metallurgy processing would not be economical for large scale production of dispersion hardened copper-base alloys. Therefore, the research described in this article was initiated to examine methods of forming dispersion alloys which would not require powder metallurgy processing. If powder metallurgy processing is to be avoided, a method must be found by which the dispersion material can be introduced into and dispersed through the melt before casting. When the dispersed phase is an oxide or similar nonmetallic, it is extremely difficult to form a satisfactory liquid: solid dispersion since successful mixing requires that the melt wet the dispersed phase. It is almost impossible to force a nonwetted particle beneath the melt surface. This difficulty can be avoided, however, if the oxide particles are produced in molten copper by reaction within the melt. The problem would then reduce to maintaining randomness until solidification. Four procedures were considered for producing an oxide particle within molten copper by reaction. In all cases, the intent was to react oxygen (0) with a reactive metal (X) to form an oxide (XO) within the copper melt. These reactions were as follows: 1) (Cu-X), + (O)g (Cu)1 + (XO)S [1] 2) (Cu-X)1 + (Cu2O)s (Cu)x + (XO)S [2] 3) (Cu-OK)1 + (Cu-X)1 (Cu)1+(XO)9 [3] 4) (Cu-OK)1 +(X)s (Cu)1 +(XO)s [4] The reactions were carried out in an 8-lb melt of 99.98 pct Cu maintained in the vicinity of 2200oF by induction heating. Where possible the amount of the reactants was controlled to give 1 to 5 vol pct oxide. Mechanical stirring during the reaction period was used to minimize agglomeration of the reaction product. The presence of a reaction product was determined metallographically by study of an ingot cast from the melt at the end of the reaction period. Reaction [I] was studied by dissolving aluminum in the melt followed by forcing oxygen through the melt. The melts became quite sluggish during the reaction period suggesting that A12O3 was formed. However, the reaction product rose out of the melt rapidly, possibly due to the flushing action of the oxygen stream, and little dispersed phase was formed. Reaction [2] was examined by dissolving aluminum, silicon, or nickel i; the melt and then adding Cu20 (melting point 2250F). This procedure was unsuccessful.
