Empirical equations for surface tension of propane and normal butane as functions of reduced temperature are obtained from experimental data. Another correlation relating surface tension to enthalpy of vaporization is given for these two compounds. In addition, new paracbor numbers are calculated for the normal paraffin hydrocarbons. These numbers are utilized for the calculation of interfacial tension of two-component systems as functions of pressure and temperature, using a modified form of Weinaug-Katz equation. The experimental data for two binary systems are approximated by the correlation. From these results it is found that the interfacial tension in the high-pressure region remains extremely low at large pressure decrements below the critical pressure. Thus, it appears that condensate systems may have flow characteristics almost like single-phase conditions even though the pressure is within the two-phase region. Experimental data have shown that interfacial tension divided by density difference approaches zero as the critical pressure is approached. A calculation of wetting-phase saturations indicates that the saturation gradient at the two-phase contact becomes increasingly abrupt as the critical pressure is approached. DISCUSSION Prediction of the surface and interfacial tension of the light hydrocarbons and of two-component hydrocarbon mixtures at various temperatures and pressures may be made if other physical properties are known. Extensive experimental work on single-component and binary systemsl is the basis for the correlations outlined in this paper. Interfacial tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phases of unlike fractional composition, while surface tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phase:; of the same fractional composition. The usual definitions relating interfacial tension to a liquid-liquid interface and surface tension to a gas-liquid interface are not clearly defined when the critical region is included, and there is no sharp distinction between a gas and a liquid phase. Interfacial tension is probably the most important single force that makes one-half to one-third of the total oil actually in place in a reservoir rock unrecoverable by conventional gas-drive or waterflood methods. A rough estimate of this figure for the United States is 100 billion bbl. Interfacial tension presently is used by petroleum engineers in the estimation of saturation gradients at the gas-oil contact and at the oil-water contact. The data in this paper should prove useful for estimates of reserves involving gas-oil contacts. Relative permeability undoubtedly is influenced by interfacial tension, for sufficiently small values. These data should be useful in determining how small the values are In addition, these data should eventually add to our fundamental knowledge of surfaces. At the critical point, all surface excesses approach zero and the thickness becomes very large. SINGLE-COMPONENT SYSTEMS It has been observed1 that the following relationships are good approximations to the physical properties of propane and n-butane.

In total numbers the membership is no larger but in revenue from dues there has been a marked increase. This has been due to the promotion to full membership of Junior Associates of earlier years, to the larger proportion that come in originally as members rather than juniors, and to the keener interest in the work of the Institute reflected in prompter payment of dues. The latter is important, since experience shows that of those who fall behind a large number must ultimately be dropped for non-payment. Conditions in the mining industries have been healthy though not booming. It has been much easier for members to find employment and meet their financial obligations but there has not been that flow of young men into mining, and hence in part into the Institute, that characterized certain earlier years. Rather the tendency toward centralization and larger industrial units has restricted the number, though not the scope, of opportunities for technical men in the mineral industries. The Institute is constantly receiving resignations from members crowded out of mining into other lines of activity. On the other hand, those who remain in mining and metallurgy have a greatly increased necessity for i,dormation and contacts with technology. A few years ago many superintendents and most foremen were non-technical men. Today the reverse rule obtains and shift bosses and men who occupy even lower positions in industrial units are called upon to know and to apply such an amount of technical knowledge that graduate engineers are the rule rather than the exception. The curious situation has obtained that with a much smaller enrolment of students in the schools of mining and metallurgy there has been at times an actual shortage of young engineers for beginners' jobs. The young men retort that the conditions of employment and pay offered in mining are not equal to those in other lines and, while it is undoubtedly true that the young engineer beginning in mining is able to start under conditions markedly better as to pay, living, and responsibility than did the men who are now leaders, they are required to know much more and have usually spent more in time and money to qualify for their jobs. The whole matter is one which warrants much more attention than has been given to it. For the Institute it is important since the young men

This paper presents a review of the technologies which have been used in the application of III-V compound semiconductors to integrated circuits and arrays. These materials have properties which make them useful for various devices such as: light emitters, sensors, microwave sources, and microwave diodes. Technologies for incorporating these devices into integrated circuits have been reported and processes developed for fabricating planar devices using selective epitaxial deposition or selective diffusions. Isolation methods utilizing semi-insulating GaAs, oxide isolation, and ceramic insulation have also been reported. These techniques, and the devices and circuits produced or proposed are discussed. AFTER the invention of the silicon-integrated circuit, methods for utilizing compound semiconductors for integrated circuit applications were proposed. The scope of applications was potentially much broader because of the range of properties available from these materials. There also was the opportunity of coupling these properties with germanium and silicon devices to realize functions and circuits which could not be produced with silicon monolithic circuits. Table I exemplifies the range of electrical properties available in III-V compound semiconductor materials which are currently being widely used. A wide range of sensor and emitter applications result from the range of band gap. The band structure of GaAs and GaAsxP1-x permits their use as microwave oscillator source, and the high electron mobilities further facilitate their utility in microwave devices. The concept of "integrated functions"1 results from the availability of these materials and methods for utilizing their special properties. Heteroepitaxial growth allows the fabrication of a monolithic block of these materials. Semi-insulating GaAs permits the attainment of electrical isolation between components in a monolithic block without resorting to p-n junction biasing or oxide isolation methods. An "integrated function" is a unit which can perform a system or subsystem role and perform a number of electromagnetic functions. These functions could include sensor or input transducer, signal processing, interconnections, and control or output function. Two examples which demonstrate this concept are an optoelectric processor and a microwave receiver front end. The optoelectronic processor, Fig. 1(a), would consist of a light sensor, signal processor, and output emitter. The sensor could be InSb or InAs which would be IR-sensitive. The signal from this sensor would then be amplified and transmitted to the light emitter. The amplifier could utilize GaAs bipolar or field effect transistors. A Gap emitter would then produce visible radiation. The microwave receiver front end, Fig. l(b), would consist of a local oscillator section and a mixer section. A signal input from an antenna is mixed with the signal from the local oscillator. The local oscillator signal is produced by a Gunn oscillator. The single-ended mixer utilizes one Schottky barrier mixer diode. The IF signal would then be amplified further and suitably displayed. A further extension of the capability of utilizing the

In most reactions involving solids the transformation kinetics may be represented by the combination of two processes —those of nucleation and of growth. For example, Mehl and his coiq-orker in their studies on the transformation of austenite to pearlite in steels have been able to describe the kinetics in terms of the rates of nucleation and of growth. By micrographic examination of their specimens they determined the nucleation rate (rate of appearance of pearlite colonies) as a function of time, of percent transformation, and of temperature. They observed that after an incubation period in which no nuclei are observed, the number of nuclei appearing per unit time per unit of untransformed grain boundary area, increases at an increasng rate with time. When recrystallization rates have been interpreted in terms of rates of nucleation and growth and the rate of nucleation determined, an incubation period followed by an increasing rate of nucleation has also been reported. Among the studies in which this phenomenon has been observed are those of Kornfeld and coworkers3 on cold-drawn aluminum wire, of Anderson and Mehl4 n the recrystallization of aluminum sheet, and of Stanlcy and Meh15 on the recrystallization of silicon ferrite sheet. The existence of an incubation period during which no nuclei are observed does not appear to have been reconciled with the generally accepted Volmer-Becker theory of nucleation in condensed systems. This theory ostensibly requires the rate of appearance of nuclei to be independent of time. Volmer-Becker Theory In order to form a stable nuclcus of a new phase B in a mother phase A, the molecules or atoms of the mother phase must surmount a free energy barrier whose height is determined by the volume free energy change accompanying the transformation and the energy of the surface separating the two phases. The free energy difference between nuclei of various sizes and the molecules or atoms of the mother phase is plotted schematically in Fig I as a function of the radius of the nucleus r. This free energy difference is plotted for two values of the change of free energy per atom, (Jb — ja) accompanying the transformation when the volumes of the two phases are infinite. One of these values of (Jb—Ja) corresponds to a temperature above the temperature To at which the phascs A and B are in equilibrium, and the other to a temperature below To. in this paper, the theory of elasticity has been applied to the rock about a deep well, It is assumed that the rock has a modulus of . elasticity and a Poisson&apos;s ratio and that the theory of elasticity applies. It is necessary to know or assume the state of stress existing in the rock before it is penetrated by the well drill. The application of this theory indicates that stress concentration of shear, tensions, and compressions about the bore hole are of a high order. This is particularly true when a horizontal compressive stress exists in one direction only in the formation before drilling. If such an initial state of stress exists before drilling, then the rock will have stress concentrations of both tension and compression at the same elevation and of such magnitude that failure of the rock is likely. Accompanying these is a shearing stress of large proportion which is likely to produce spalling of the well walls. Internal pressure applied to the well bore will relieve the extreme compression but not the tension and has little effect upon the shear. Plastic deformation of the rock through a geological time tends to mitigate the stress concentrations. IntroductioN It has long been known that the stresses about holes and re-entrant corners of elastic solids under the influence of loads are different and generally more intense than those imposed upon the body else- where. Stress concentration at a re-entrant corner can be reduced by increasing the radius of the fillet at the corner. Stress concentration at the end of a crack in a plate undergoing either tension or compression Can be relieved appreciably by drilling a hole at the very end of the crack. Also, stresses can be increased in an elastic body in tension or compression by making a hole in it. The stress concentration is greatest at the edge of the hole. Considerable knowledge of the stresses which exist about the bore hole of a deep well may be had by applying our knowledge of engineering mechanics; or more particularly the theory of elasticity. It is, of course, necessary to make the assumption that the rock is elastic and behaves as an elastic solid, that is, that it obeys Hooke&apos;s law, has a modulus of elasticity, and a Poisson&apos;s ratio. It is also necessary to know, Or assume, the state of stress which exists in the rock prior to the penetration of the drill. With this knowledge it is possible to compute the stresses about the bore hole. The problem can be simplified by considering several simple cases separately and then by applying the principle of superposition to solve the more complex cases which are made up of the simpler ones. A knowledge of the equilibrium water content of hydrocarbon systems under pressure is important to the natural gas industry. The information available on the solubility of water in hydrocarbon, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide systems is reviewed in this paper and the influence of the more important variables such as temperature, pressure and molecular structure on solubility in liquids and gases is discussed. A suitable cbromatographic technique has been developed for determining low concentrations of water. Tailing of the water peaks has been elim inated by adding water to the carrier gas stream The method is applicable for both gas or liquid samples and is effective in the presence of hydrogen sulfide. The experimental study of water solubility in methane-hydrogen sulfide systems at a temperature of 16oF has shown that the presence of hydrogen sulfide causes only a modest increase in water content at pressures up to 1,400 psia. Theoretical considerations and data on pure hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide suggest that the effect of both these compounds will be greater at higher pressures and in the liquid phase. INTRODUCTION Before transporting or processing natural gases and gas condensates, it is usually necessary to dry them using suitable dehydration equipment. The design and operation of this equipment requires a knowledge of the amount of water present in the fluid at the reservoir and operating conditions. This is influenced by temperature, pressure and composition, particular1y when certain non-hydrocarbon components are present. Field experience indicates that hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, for example, alter the usual water solubility relationships appreciably. However, an extensive search of the literature does not reveal any quantitative data on such systems. For sweet natural gases, generalized empirical correlations such as the one proposed by Katz, et al,6 can be used to predict water solubility with confidence at most temperatures and pressures of interest. However, existing theoretical relationships do not permit a calculation of the deviation from these curves when polar substances like hydrogen sulfide are present in the system. Thus one must resort to an experimental approach to obtain the necessary information. The fact that laboratory experimental methods frequently involve the use of mercury which reacts with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of water, and that hydrogen sulfide interferes with many chemical reactions specific for water has contributed to the difficulty of studying water solubility in systems containing hydrogen sulfide. In this investigation the water content of a limited member of methane-hydrogen sulfide mixtures was determined using a special technique with gas chromatography. REVIEW OF PUBLISHED DATA Experimentally determined water solubility data have been reported for methane, 14 ethane, 15 propane, 9 n-butane, 16 1-butene, 11 hydrogen sulfide 18 and carbon dioxide. 19 These studies report the effect of pressure, temperature and molecular structure on water solubility in single component gases and liquids. IT is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have 0n Society. The development of a machine to replace several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and technology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. MAGNITUDE OF THE FUELS INDUSTRY Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the comparative values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13 1/4 billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone annually exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1020 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to 1939, $46,409,727,000 of metallic products, S80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,000,000 of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. The mineral fuels have contributed 52.7 per cent of the entire mineral wealth produced over this period that has seen such tremendous industrial development in our country. The amount of coal used in the Colonies before the Revolutionary War was very small, and few records of it can be found, these all being in the Public Records Office in London. The exports and imports for the years 1768 to 1772, inclusive, are shown in Table 3, which apparently do not include the early shipments from the Virginia field. For the three years 1769 to 1771, the imports from Great Britain-their only source-totalled 17,943 tons, or an average of 5,981 tons per year. If the shipments from Richmond for the same period were available, this average would probably not exceed 6,800 tons per year. In Table 4 the shipments of coal from the James River ports for the period 1758 to 1769 are shown. A few of them are re-exports of coal brought from England, but the great majority are undoubtedly of coal produced in Virginia, and the movement was partly to West Indian ports but mainly to Atlantic ports from Baltimore to Portsmouth, N. H. (Piscataway). In Table 5 the data in Tables 3 and 4 are combined, the exports being deducted, and this summarizes all the available data on the amount of coal consumed in the Colonies before the separation from England. As has already been stated there has been a tremendous amount of work done in the Richmond field over a long period of time, many mines were opened and in some cases operated for years, and practically no accurate data remain or have been published to show what was done. There are undoubtedly manuscripts still remaining that will contribute to much of the knowledge of this field, and it is well worth the while of the proper state authorities to collect all the information that can be found anywhere, to enable the future development of these coal deposits to benefit by the record of what was done in the past. Table 22 shows all the methods of shipment from this field, and all of the data available about tonnages moved over each of them. The shipments by the Chesterfield and Clover Hill Railroads are largely duplicated in some of the other columns, but allowance has been made for this in the estimated totals. In addition to the difficulties experienced with similar data for the other states, these Virginia records have one peculiarly their own; it was the custom to allow 5 pecks to the bushel of coal at the pit and only 4 pecks at the docks or at vessel side. In most of the figures it is not stated to which point they apply, and a considerable error may exist due to this cause, although certainly it does not apply to all of them. The notes show the sources of the figures used, and while it is probable that the totals are lower than the actual amounts produced, the data given are the most complete that can now be assembled.

A test of any fan requires the determination of such data as fan pressure, air volume handled by the fan, and power input to the fen shaft. When testing operating mine fans of the centrifugal type, test methods have been employed, for the sake of convenience, that permit great latitude in detail of procedure resulting in wide variance in results by different investigators. Some controversial aspects of field fan testing are the result of past failure to define clearly the various forms of fan pressure and to a lack of understanding of the accurate procedure for the measurement thereof. Also, the anemometer for air-volume measurement, although convenient, if carelessly used and maintained is subject to a wide error range with variation in method of application and in instrument accuracy. The appearance of the axial-flow type of mine fan offers the possibility of refinements in field testing that were impractical with the centrifugal fan. First of all, the fan inlet and outlet are more sharply defined, giving closer agreement as to just where the fan begins and ends; thus there is less disagreement as to the proper location for measurements of fan pressure. The area of passage into the inlet of an axial-flow mine fan usually constricts, causing high air velocities with accompanying steadiness of flow. Thus the fan inlet offers an ideal location for accurate air-volume measurements with the pitot tube, the proper use of which is well established by code. Thereby the controversial aspects of such measurements are eliminated. Use of the Pitot tube also facilitates a more accurate measure of fan pressure, since the individual pressures measured can be properly weighted, as will be explained later. Determination of power input to the axial-flow mine fan operating in the field is subject to the same inaccuracies as with the centrifugal fan if the axial-flow fan is also belt driven. However, because of the higher rates of rotation usual with axial-flow fans, direct-driven units are more numerous and it is unnecessary to assume a drive efficiency, thus eliminating one possible source of error. It is the purpose of this paper to define and explain the various types of pressure measurements involved in a field test of an axial-flow mine fan, and to further explain the proper use of the Pitot tube when measuring pressures and volumes. DefinitioN of Fan Pressures The two fan pressures most commonly discussed are fan total and fan static pressure, each of which has the same meaning regardless of whether the fan is blowing, exhausting, or blowing and exhausting, as in the case of a fan with ducts connected to both outlet and inlet. Fan total presscre is the amount by which the total pressure of the air delivered by the fan exceeds the total pressure of the air received by the fan. This pressure is a measure of the maximum amount of the work done on the air by the fan that is available for external use.

RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I think it is very wise to point out the greater liability to explosions in certain parts of the year, if there be such difference, with the caution, however, that vigilance be not relaxed at other times. In comparing the figures for the United States with those of Europe, I think we should separate them as far as possible according to cause of origin and means of propagation. That is to say, it would appear to me that the majority of our explosions are due more directly to the ignition of coal dust directly from the flame of explosives, whereas, judging from my inquiries and observations in some of the mines of Europe, the majority of their explosions have been caused by the ignition of fire damp. Now, in the case of fire damp, I do not think that anybody has yet attempted or has been able to find any connection between the seasons and the issuance of methane into mines. One thing must be borne in mind, that if you get a strong explosion of fire damp, dust of a character that might not ignite readily by itself might assist in the extension of an explosion of fire damp through a considerable area in the mine, if not throughout the mine. While it is true we have many lesser explosions in this country attributable to fire damp, it would appear that the majority of all the mine explosions of the country, in considering the means of propagation beyond the locality of the origin, are due to coal dust; and it is the liability to coal-dust explosions that appears to be affected by seasonal changes. Hence the desirability of separating statistically (if it could be done by the inspectors) fire-damp explosions from coal-dust explosions, in order to obtain the true value of the seasonal effect. Nevertheless, in spite of the inclusion of fire-damp explosions with coal-dust explosions, the preponderance of the evidence, as indicated in Mr. Eavenson&apos;s figures for American mines, has shown that&apos; in this country there were more explosions in the winter and spring months, when the mines are drier; that is, when the mines are apt to be drier. Whereas, according to the European figures that he has gathered, it seems to be very clearly demonstrated that in France, England, and Belgium, the time when explosions occur has no connection with any particular season. That, I think, is partly due to the point just mentioned, that a majority of their explosions have originated from fire damp. The European mining men have been more careful, generally speaking, with the use of explosives than we have, so that the cause of ignition from that source has been less. We shall all be interested in hearing about The situation that has called forth This, request, and The Oil Administrator, Mr. Requa, has kindly come from Washington to Tell us about it. MARK L. REQUA.-I am very glad To Tell you about the oil problem during This war period. The United States is supplying by far The greater part of all The petroleum products consumed in Great Britain, France and Italy. In addition To This, we have had To supply a marked increase in our domestic consumption, not only of The refined products, but of fuel oil as well. The combination has put a strain on The oil industry, which it is very difficult To meet. The oil companies, being under contract, had no option as To who should get Their oil first, and They were delivering pro rata To everybody; manufacturers of furniture were getting oil with The same regularity as Those who were making aeroplanes or munitions, and The oil companies felt that something should be done. The first order with which I had. anything To do was The priority list for The delivery of fuel oil. That list contained 12 classifications, beginning with bunker fuel and railroads, and you will realize The complexity of The situation when you hear that munitions plants are in class 11. The priority list held during The winter, but transportation became so bad, because of The number of ships that were Taken for trans-Atlantic use, that some of The oil companies were not able To deliver more Than about 60 per cent. into class 5, and nothing beyond that point. To add To the Troubles, the Tank-car mileage fell off. The average for 1917 was about 36 miles per car per day. in January, 1918, it dropped To about 8 miles, and it must have been nearly zero in The early part. of February. Because of The extremely severe winter, furthermore, pipe lines were not delivering anywhere near Their normal capacity. A new priority list has recently been promulgated, introducing a few slight changes. Natural gas has been brought under its provisions, and it has been extended To include The Pacific Coast, which was not considered necessary last winter. The situation in The gas industry is not satisfactory; it is estimated that There will be a decrease of 10 To 20 per cent. in The quantity of natural gas available This winter, as compared with last winter.

This section was obtained last year during an examination of the iron-ore resources of the Rich Patch Mountain region and along Craig&apos;s creek valley. The geological members below the Oriskany and Lower Helderberg are exposed along the gap in a beautiful arch, while the higher formations appear in a more or less disturbed state on both sides of this arch, and are partly covered by dèbris. I have thought it of interest to the Institute to reproduce the drawing of this section at the gap which I made in my note-book at the time of my examination; those parts of the section, which lie at both sides of the arch, are only approximated. I give also a number of notes and measurements, referring to the Clinton formation and especially to the characteristics of the fossiliferous ore-seam opened in the various tunnels along the arch (see section). I. In Tunnel C: For the first 110 to 120 feet to second shute, we find the ore only here and there in small deposits, and interchanging with, or changing into, either a very siliceous limestone or a sandstone. About 10 feet beyond shute we have : Sandstone roof. Clay-slate, 211/2 inches Brown lean ore, 1 inch. Sandy clay, 3 to 31/4 inches. 1. Dark .brown ore, 3 inches. 2. Fossil-ore, changing into sandstone or very siliceous limestone, 2 inches. 3. Brown lean ore, 6 inches. Clay and slate below, 1 foot. 194 feet from entrance : Sandstone roof. Clay-slate, 4 inches. The meeting of the Institute at St. Louis brought together many members of the Women&apos;s Auxiliary, and Mrs. Philip N. Moore, who was nominated as the Director for the St. Louis Section, took the occasion formally to inaugurate the organization in that district. A meeting was held at the Planters Hotel, anti after discussion as to, the aims and objects of the. Auxiliary, officers were nominated for the&apos; Section; the meeting then adjourned for two days, to he resumed in Joplin.. Here a very successful meeting was held, at which the Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer were elected. A great deal of interest was arouse under the able directorship of Mrs. Moore the St. Louis Section is likely to become a large and active organization. The president of the Women&apos;s Auxiliary, in opening the meetings, told the ladies present of the inauguration of-the-Society in February, 1917, and of the work which had been accomplished up to date. She told how the Society devotes itself to patriotic and humanitarian work along lines acceptable and interesting to the Mining Engineer, standing always alongside and behind the men of the profession. The Central Welfare Committee of the organization has three Sub-Committees: Foreign Relief, Emergency, and Americanization, and under one or other of those heads most of the work of the&apos; Society has been done. Mr. Hoover was responsible for the inception of the Foreign Relief Committee, as its first work was the collection of funds for the supplementary meals for the Belgian Children. Under the energetic administration of Mrs. H. Knox, this sub-committee raised $12,100 in the period between the February meeting and the Declaration of war by the United States, when our government took over the entire duty of feeding starving Belgium. The organization of the Belgian Relief Committee, as it was styled, still remains, but the members are now asked to take up the question of relief in France. The President, Mrs. S. J. Jennings suggested at the St. Louis meetings that one way of working for the foreign relief alight be that all the members of the Auxiliary should, during the period of the war, forego all giving&apos; and receiving of Christmas presents, except those they have been accustomed to give to the poor or in charity, and those they would give to the men in the services of the United States; that the money usually spent on the Christmas gifts should be put into a fund to be sent abroad for the fatherless children of France, as a gift from the families of the Institute. A good deal of discussion followed this proposal, as some of the ladies felt that children should have their Christmas gifts as usual. The Director of the Section emphasized the truth that the Christmas spirit was the .spirit of giving and sacrifice, and that no sacri-

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd&apos;s life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. Read; Choice of Methods—A Record of Experience in Making Decisions, with chapters by W. H. Bassett, F. W. Bradley, E. DeGolyer, Howard N. Eavenson, A. B. Parsons, J. V. W. Reynders, L. D. Ricketts, Robert E. Tally, Pope Yeatman and others. One other book is projected but final selection has not been made. During the second year of America&apos;s active ia in the war the inain objectives of the petroleum-refining industry were again to provide the four most important product needs for war: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. All other materials supplied by the petroleum industry took an inferior priority ranking, depending on the degree of essentiality. To accomplish the above objectives the industry initiated and carried on a building program during 1942 and 1943 which will put those two years down in petroleum-refining history as the greatest construction years of all time, a record which will hold for decades to come. Led by an estimated total of $ 900,000,000 going into 100-octane and contributory plant investment, it is easy to picture a total of two billion dollars and more going into additional refining-industry plant investment during 1942 and 1943, most of it privately paid for, but a substantial part covered by R.F.C. Government money financing. Some of the new plants will not be completed until 1944, but a large proportion of the program was finished and put into operation, adding substantially to the output of the four principal products during 1943- lne most important and spectacuiar activity of the refining industry is of course the 100-octane gasoline program necessitated by the fact that nearly 90 per cent of the requirements of the United Nations is being furnished by the United States. Recent P.A.W. figures mention $goo,-ooo,ooo as the cost of the construction looking to increasing the output of this all-important munition. Thirty-four major plants have been completed, 11 of them during the last quarter of the year. Thirty-eight more will be completed and put into operation during the first four or five months of 1944. Twenty-two additional plants authorized during 1943 are already well under way and scheduled for production late in 1944. Early in 1942 the aim was to treble the capacity for making 100-octane gasoline then existing; later, plans were to make it five times as great, to match the increased warplane building program; and toward the end of the year the sights had been set at a still higher but unannounced target, representing six to seven times the early 1942 figure. Comparative figures issued at the end of 1943 enable one to guess a program by the middle of 1944 of eight to nine times the former production, with an ultimate production in 1944 of eleven or more times the early 1942 output. THE mechanism by which the super-saturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications. 1,2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon {111} matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;3 at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate y but that of a transition lattice ?&apos;. Since this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the {111} matrix planes with the {110} direction in the matrix parallel to the {11.0} direction in ?&apos;, it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely ?&apos; in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the {00.0} plane in ?&apos; are identical with those on the {111} matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures ?&apos; and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, ? &apos; is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system,2,4 hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructure, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The preparation of the 20.2 per cent Ag alloy has been described.2 Alloys containing 9.9 and 29.7 per cent Ag were prepared from 99.97 per cent Al and 99.99+ per cent Ag using a similar procedure. INTRODUCTION OWENS LAKE is at present a source of important nonmetallic minerals, sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na2CO3); sodium sesquicarbonate (trona, Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20) and borax, (Na2B407.10H2O). Owens Lake is a closed basin in the southern part of Inyo County, California, at the southern end of Owens Valley, east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and west of the Coso and Inyo Mountains. Broadly considered, it is in the Great Basin area, but at no time was it a part of Lake Lahontan. CLOSED BASINS Closed basins are phenomena of arid or semiarid regions where outflow is considerably less than inflow and where accordingly soluble salts concentrate in residual liquid. When inflowing waters originate in areas where the rocks are predominantly marine sediments, the residual basin liquid is primarily a chloride brine; if the rocks are largely igneous, the residual brine tends to be alkaline containing carbonates, and sometimes borates as well. Since normally, both types of rocks occur in regions contiguous to closed basins, residual liquids do not often fit into the two broad divisions mentioned. No two residual brines are exactly alike, just as no two ore deposits are exactly alike. Even out of the same closed basin, it is possible to get widely different analyses of liquids since underground and surface flows, as well as local evaporation rates and other conditions might have a marked influence on residual-liquid compositions. At Searles Lake, The American Potash and Chemical Corporation is building a plant to process a lower-level brine which is considerably higher in sodium carbonate and borax, and lower in potassium chloride, than that company has processed for many years. F. W. Clarke1 has classified waters of closed basins as follows: I Chloride type; largely sodium chloride (NaCI) and of oceanic type, such as Great Salt Lake. Related is the Dead Sea, a bittern residue of magnesium, potassium and sodium chlorides. 2. Sulphate type; largely sodium sulphate (Na2S04) with considerable sodium chloride such as Sevier Lake, Utah; Laramie Lakes, Wyoming; Dale Lake, California. 3. Carbonate type; high in carbonates and fairly high in sulphates, such as Moses Lake, Eastern Washington; and the Nebraska Potash Lakes. 4. Carbonate-chloride type; lower in carbonates than type 3 and about equally rich in sulphates, such as Pyramid Lake, Nevada. 5. Sulphate-Carbonate type; quite high in sulphates and carbonates, such as Pelican Lake, Oregon. 6. Triple type; considerable quantities of carbonates, sulphates and chlorides
