There is a dearth of information on the economic threat of silicosis. Even the insurance companies and rating bureaus are in a quandary, and the majority of them avoid any action that will stir up an awakened public consciousness of the serious nature of this industrial hazard. Individual claims for $100,000 are now common in silicosis lawsuits. Because of ('hidden costs," in lowered plant efficiency, the total cost of this disease to industry is probably four times its apparent direct cost. The direct costs vary with the labor policies of the employer and with the labor legislation in force. Direct costs may originate in three ways: (1) voluntary assumption by the employer of medical expenses and loss of earning power of stricken employees; (2) state enforcement of industrial disease compensation acts; and (3) awards or settlements after suits in common law. Examples are offered in the last two classifications. In the Rand, South Africa, compensation laws are in effect and in approximately 20 years prior to 1932 about $65,000,000 has been awarded for silicosis and an additional liability of $34,000,000 incurred, or an average of about t5,000,000 per year. During 1932 silicosis compensation on the Rand was about $6,000,000. No figures are available for the direct capital or operating costs for preventive measures there, nor for the additional "hidden costs." It might be reasonable to assume that silicosis has cost the gold-mining industry of South Africa twenty to twenty-five millions of dollars per year. It is estimated that common-law silicosis claims have, in the last few years, aggregated $50,000,000 in New York State alone and have exceeded $300,000,000 in the United States. Attention is called to the involved nature of the insurance situation for industrial diseases in contrast to accidents. The indeterminant, insidious nature of silicosis makes it particularly difficult to predict necessary insurance premiums and reserves. The serious hazard of this disease was not properly appreciated by either insurance companies or industrialists, so sufficient study has not been given its causation, prevention, detection, treatment, and compensation. (communication to the Secretary *):—At the meetings of English technical societies it not infrequently happens that, during the discussion of a paper, someone will arise to say that although he highly appreciated the material presented, nevertheless he believed it would have been better if some other phase of the question had been more highly emphasized. Assuming that this form of discussion is permissible in the Institute, I should like to reiterate the point made by Prof. A. J. Moses that conclusive proof of the identity of the minerals in question is an essential feature of the study of ores in this way. This is also expressed by Paul Krusch in his recent valuable paper on the sulphide ores (in which he arrives at conclusions diametrically opposed to those of Mr. Graton), as follows: "The diagnostic properties of the various ore minerals are known to but a limited circle of investigators." Many earlier investigators began the study of ores beneath the microscope by reflected light, but discontinued their work, in most cases, because they were unwilling to undertake the great amount of preliminary work necessary to securely establish a basis for their inferences. It is evident that Messrs. Graton and Murdoch realize that the promised later paper on diagnostic characters will be the more important of the two, but the point should be emphasized to forestall a flood of literature from other investigators who may gain the impression that the brief survey of polished specimens is a vade mecum to incontrovertible conclusions as to any given ore deposit.

Gary Works No. 1 BOP Shop is a three furnace shop which went into operation December, 1965. The heat size is over 200 tons, with a substantial percentage of the production used to feed a Continuous Slab Caster. Vessels are driven by a shaft mounted bull gear and main housing utilizing eight 35 HP flange mounted motors and primary gear reducers. Torque absorption is controlled by two spring actuated torque arms. At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 1970, as "E" furnace was being turned down for a preliminary test, the drive side trunnion bearing failed. The furnace dropped slightly and shifted several inches north in the direction of the drive unit. The decision was made to tap the heat which was done without incident and the vessel uprighted. No attempt was made to completely drain the slag from the vessel, so as to avoid any further damage to the trunnion shaft bearing surface. The bearing failure occurred approximately four years and eight months after start up of the shop. Unfortunately ?M? furnace had gone down for a normal reline two days prior to the bearing failure, leaving the shop with only one operating furnace.

Kansas continued holding, for its seventh year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The crude-oil production, according to purchaser's reports to the State Corporation Commission, was 40,008,940 bbl.; as assembled by the Oil and Gas Journal, 41,305,768, and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 41,942,000 barrels. Increase of production from 1932 was largely due to greater stability of the industry, and increased return of demand for Kansas oil, caused by the addition of Federal assistance in national production regulation which reduced illegal production, of some areas out of Kansas, that had been destructively competing with Kansas crude or its refined products, at less than cost of production. Prices continued to advance from the lowest level of 25c per barrel during part of May and June, until by the end of September 36" gravity crude had reached $1 per barrel and continued at this price the remainder of the year. Price stability, for a period greater than in previous years, has brought renewed confidence to those producing oil and has led to renewed interest and increased purchases of Kansas leases. Drilling was confined chiefly to the number of wells necessary to protect from offset and other drainage in the field and to meet the requirements of expiring lease contract deeper areas in Mid-Continent, are an added inducement to exploration. The renewal of interest in the search for new fields in Kansas is already apparent and 1934 will probably see more wildcatting than for several years. This is due both to the expiration of leases on large blocks and to actual demand of the industry for new fields. Exploration for favorable areas is being actively conducted by the various methods of surface, subsurface and core drilling and geophysical work. Much of western Kansas cannot be mapped by surface study and geophysical exploration has been of considerable assistance and has led to a large use of the seismograph. Several companies are conducting seismograph surveys and leasing on findings already secured. Development under the more favorable conditions of 1933 can be readily seen by the comparison of the following reports for the last weeks of December in the respective years.

WIDESPREAD interest in the better utilization of coal is indicated by the attendance of over seventeen hundred men interested in the pro- cessing and utilization of coal and its by-products, at Pittsburgh, Nov. 15 to 18. The conference was truly international in scope and of a scientific character, and must be considered a real success. There were dele- gates--official and unofficial-from America, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. Several Federal and 28 State departments had representatives, also many colleges and universities, and many leading industrial and mining corporations throughout the country. A feature of the sessions was that papers were mostly read in full and attentively listened to, although in some cases they were of a technical nature. The proceedings were opened by the president of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Thomas C. Baker, who spoke of the importance of the conference and felt that without foreign cooperation it could not have been held. There was no need to apologize for the movement of Carnegie Institute of Technology in the matter. Coal is commanding attention in every part of the world; so is power; and coal will remain the chief source of power for generations to come. The coal chemist is working with the engineer, and nobody can forecast what developments there will be in fuel technology. This conference may be the turning point of fuel technology in America. The development and application of these new processes may be of great benefit to Pittsburgh.

The following discussion occurred on the afternoon of Sept,. 22, 1930, as part of the fall meeting of the Iron and Steel Division at Chicago. About seventy-five men attended this session. C. B. Murray opened the meeting, as follows: C. B. Murray, Cleveland, Ohio.—It is very encouraging to see so many here this afternoon to discuss this important matter of beneficiation. The producers of ore, I am sure, are anxious to furnish the grade of ore that the consumer wants. The consumer sometimes wants that which cannot be economically produced and often the producer cannot understand why the consumer wants certain things. It was to bring together these two interested parties that this meeting was proposed. I was appointed the chairman of the meeting, chiefly because I happened to be the chairman of the Iron Ore Committee of the Institute. I know a little about iron ore but have not perhaps kept up with the times in blast-furnace practice. I am asking Mr. Sweetser, who is well informed from both sides, to take over the meeting and carry on the discussion. R. H. Sweetser, Columbus, Ohio.—We want to have a free discussion between the iron-ore men and the blast-furnace men as to just what we are trying to reach in the beneficiation of iron ores. Many of those present have had a great deal of experience. There are men here from the ranges who have been passing through the experimental stage of beneficiation of iron ores, and there are some who have already gone on to commercial production. We have reached the point where the beneficiation of iron ore is important to the whole iron and steel industry. The connection between iron-ore beneficiation and the cleaning of coal is so close that I think we can profit by working very close to the coal people. Some Aspects of the Iron-ore Situation W. G. The Jeffrey operation of Canadian Johns -Manville Co. , Ltd., at Asbestos, Quebec, is considered to be the world's largest asbestos mine. It accounts for approximately 37% of Canadian production of chysotile asbestos and about 13% of world production. Rated capacity is over 600,000 stpy (540,000 mtpy) of fiber, of which well over 90% is exported to the United States and seventy other countries. During the early 1970's the company completed a five-year modernization and expansion program which included the installation of a unique 72 in. by 93 in. gyratory crusher to handle the extremely blocky serpentinized peridotite ore. Because of the large diameter of this crusher the top ring of the shell was made in two halves which were bolted together. Hundred-ton trucks dump from two sides of the crusher into the 200 st (180 mt) dump pocket which is equipped with dust collecting ducts in the walls of the other two sides. The installation was designed to accommodate the eventual use of 200 -ton trucks. Crushed ore at a. size of 7 ½ in. (191 mm) falls into a uniquely designed crushed ore pocket equipped with three sloping steel sides and one vertical side, which make it totally live. Infrared heaters installed in back of the hopper sides prevent the ore from sticking to the steel. Another interesting feature is an eccentric removal bridge which is permanently mounted inside the crushed ore pocket. The two halves of the bridge are let down by electric winches to form a platform on which the eccentric cart travels and from where maintenance is done. Level indications in the crushed ore pocket are by radioactive indicators. Under the crushed ore pocket is a 72 in. by 28 ft (1.83 m by 8.5 m) apron feeder which operates at 7. 2 to 50 fpm (2. 3 to 15. 3 mpm). Crushed ore is discharged to a picking belt for tramp removal. A crossbelt magnetic separator is also mounted over this belt. Permanently mounted belt reels are also situated over the picking belt to facilitate the changing of this unit. A 60 in. (1. 52 m) wide takeaway belt then elevates the crushed ore to t.he surface facilities. Instead of discharging to a crushed ore stockpile, the takeaway conveyor delivers the ore to a 300-ton distribution bin. The ore is then screened and secondary crushed; and the plus ¾ in. (19 m) is "stored in a 3,000 ton bin while the minus ¾ in. is dried and then sent to storage. This system of directly screening primary crushed ore is similar to that used at both the Endako molybdenum and Gibraltar copper operations in British Columbia. The Plomosas stratiform lead and zinc deposits are located in northeastern Chihuahua in a sequence of folded Paleozoic and Jurassic rocks. They consist mainly of channel or blanket-like bodies of ellipsoidal cross section restricted to a 60-in-thick shaly limestone and a 30-m-thick marble horizon of La Casita formation, with some reemplacement veins and shoots within the Plomosas formation. The mineralogy consists of iron-poor sphalerite, galena with a small silver content, and pyrite, in a gangue of calcite, barite, and minor quartz. The ore bodies present a lateral zoning with zinc-lead ratios increasing to the northwest. Vertical zoning shows marked changes in zinc-lead ratios and in the width and tenor of the ore which cannot be related to sedimentary or diagenetic features. Transgressive mineralization and some small fissure veins and breccia pipes also point to an epigenetic origin. Sulfur isotope analysis and geochemical data indicate hydrothermal solutions. Texture of the ores in the Mina Vieja marble is coarse, but in the Cuesta shale it is banded along bedding. The low iron and silver content of the sphalerite and galena and the weak hydrothermal alteration (only marbleization) of the wall rock suggest a telethermal stage of the solutions. There is no evidence of a possible intrusive rock mineralization.

DOES hand-sorting of mill feed pay? The fact that the practice is so general would seem to indicate that there must be good reasons for following it; yet, to my mind, the advantage in many cases is doubtful enough to invite a thorough discussion of the subject, in an effort to determine under what conditions hand-sorting does pay. A typical sorting plant in the Coeur d'Alene district handles about 800 tons of mine-run ore per day. The material is run over a grizzly with about 4-in. opening; the oversize is crushed to about 4-in. size and joins the undersize, and the whole product is washed and screened on trommels with about 1 ½ -in. openings. The oversize from these trommels is spread on a belt and the waste and first-class ore are sorted out by hand, the residue being further crushed, and passes, together with the trommel undersize, into the mill feed bins. About 50 tons of shipping ore and 150 tons of waste are sorted out per day, leaving about 600 tons of mill feed. To sort out this material requires 20 ore sorters and five bosses and repairmen. The normal cost of hand-sorting is about 16 c. per ton of run-of-mine ore, or 65 c. per ton of material sorted out. I believe that straight crushing and milling of the run-of-mine ore, in this case, is not only cheaper, but is metallurgically moree canonical and efficient than hand-sorting followed by milling of the residue. At one of the Bunker Hill rock-houses, 1250 tons of run-of-mine ore are reduced to pass 30-mm., or about 1 ¼ -in. opening in six hours, requiring five men. The equipment and the power consumed are not greatly different from that required in a sorting plant of the same capacity, and the normal cost of thus preparing the feed for milling is under 3 c. per ton of mine product. The relative cheapness of this method as against hand-sorting is thus clearly established, the saving being about 13 c. per ton. If there is any virtue in hand-sorting, then, it must lie in the metallurgical results achieved.

THE production of soft coal from strip mines in the United States has shown a remarkable growth in the last sixteen years, increasing from one and one-quarter million tons in 1914 to approximately twenty-two million tons in 1929. This is a growth of approximately 1660 p& cent, as compared with a growth of approximately 20 per cent in the underground mines for the same period. But even with this marked in- crease the total tonnage produced by open-face mining represents only 4 per cent of the nation's soft coal tonnage.

Lipson1 has recently presented a technical note wherein theoretical considerations were used to demonstrate. that the adsorption us saturation relation for a linear absorption method is not necessarily a single valued function of saturation.1 It was concluded that the absorption us saturation relationship is subject to the same hysteretic effect as is the flow behavior between the drainage and imbibition systems. It is the purpose of this note to show, by experimental results, that for the manner in which fluids are distributed in porous materials during fluid flow, the relative X-ray absorption us saturation relationship is single-valued regardless of the saturation history. The design of the apparatus used to measure relative X-ray absorption of cores undergoing fluid flow tests is similar to that described by Morgan, McDowell and Doty. A few modifications have been incorporated in the design to increase sensitivity and simplicity of measurement. The sensitivity is such that for usual types of cores a recording pen movement of approximately 12 linear in. is occasioned between the recording of the core dry and when it is completely full of an absorbing liquid, a solution of approximately five per cent by volume of iodo-benzene in a close-cut hydrocarbon fraction, or a solution of 50,000 ppm sodium iodide in water. Two types of experiments were conducted, one in which the liquid was inside the core, and the other with the liquid outside the core. Tests with the liquid inside the core were run to cover the saturation range encountered in both the drainage (gas drive) and imbibition (liquid flood) flow systems. It is pointed out that the same core was used, but the tests were conducted at different times with the recording mechanism balanced at a different position. Therefore, the absolute values of relative X-ray intensity at any saturation are not the same in each test. In the second type of test the same core was used, but this time its pore space cmtained only gas, and various thicknesses of oil contained in plastic cells were placed in front of the dry core. As before. the relative X-ray ah- sorption was measured and compared to the quantity of oil in front of the core. The arrangement of the fluids with respect to the path of X-rays in these two types of tests represent fluid distributions of a wider difference than can be expected between that established in a core just due to imbibition and drainage saturation flow histories. Thus any deviation from a straight line relationship of the log of the relative X-ray intensity us saturation calibration should be readily apparent. Results of the laboratory tests are given in Fig. 1. A schematic diagram showing the position of the fluids with respect to the path of the X-ray beam is given for the two cases investigated. In the case where the oil existed outside the core (Case B), the log of the X-ray intensity (log, I/I,) is related directly to the cell thickness (amount of oil in X-ray beam path). This correlation is in full agreement with X-ray theory.
