THE results described in this article are based on field work conducted during the periods April-May, 1939, and May-July, 1940. The United States Potash Co. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department of the Interior and the geophysical investigation was completed under a cooperative arrangement made between that company and the Conservation Branch of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member of the Section of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. These methods had been introduced into the work of the Conservation Branch by Benjamin E. Jones for the investigation of dam sites, and have been used under his direction by the author for such work. If the method proved to be applicable, an effort was to be made to contour the top of the salt beds and also the other formation boundaries known to be present in this area. Salt-water aquifers were to be studied in an effort to determine their boundaries, and an attempt was to be made to delineate the potash-bearing beds. EARLIER STUDIES Others have made, and reported, resistivity studies over saliferous deposits in different areas. Friede1 and Messrs. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the discovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly3 described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly4 published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlumberger5 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies on salt deposits in which the single-probe method was used. Sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performed with the ground comparator of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to B00 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,11 through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining Co.

The degree and type of carbide dispersion resulting from changes in the cooling rate from austenite determine the amount of carbon remaining in solution after slow cooling- from a subsequent subcritical annealing treatment. A difjusion model has been proposecl to explain the effect of carbide dispersion on the amount of carbon retained in solution and the amount of carbon in solution has been related to the degree of carbon strain aging. COTTRELL and Leak' have shown that the rate of strain aging in low-carbon steels is dependent upon the amount of carbon and nitrogen in solution. Carbon can be effectively removed from solution as Fe , C by quench aging at temperatures of 200" C or lower; however, the relatively higher solubility of nitrogen at these temperatures prevents sufficient removal of nitrogen as iron nitrides. For this reason, nitrogen in solution has been considered the major cause of strain aging in rimming grades of commercial low-carbon steels. Nitrogen can be effectively removed from solution and nonaging steel produced through the addition of aluminum to form the stable nitride, AlN; however, the aluminum also causes deoxidation resulting in a killed steel. III an attempt to produce a rimmed steel which was also nonaging, Morgan and Shyne 2 investigated tile strain-aging properties of low-carban steels containing boron and found that strain aging was suplx-essed in steels containing as little as 0.007 pet B. The original purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanism of strain-aging suppression by boron. Early in the study, the function of boron was discovered to be much like that of aluminum in that the formation of a nitride, BN, removed the nitrogen from solution.' However, during the course of the investigation, an effect of heat treatment upon the strain-aging properties and the amount of carbon in solution was found which could be related to the microstructure of the steel. The purpose of this paper is to examine these relationships among heat treatment, microstructure, carbon in solution, and strain aging in steels where nondetectable amounts of nitrogen are present in solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The investigation was carried out using 0.030 in. by 12. in wire specimens which had been cold swaged and drawn to the final diameter. Table I lists the compositions of the low-carbon steels used. ROBERT PEELE, New York, N. Y. (written discussion *).-This excellent paper is one of a number of recent detailed descriptions of the, methods and plant in use at prominent mines of the country. The publication of such papers cannot be too highly praised. In the past, the interchange of inside information has often been hampered by the disinclination of some mining companies to permit publication of details of their work. These companies apparently have not realized fully that free discussion is of mutual benefit; that members of mine staffs are aided in. keeping up to date, in improving old methods and devising new ones to meet changes in conditions, and, by a wholesome feeling of rivalry, are stimulated to introduce economies and do better work. In writing this paper, Messrs. Haight and Tillson have packed a large amount of information into a relatively small space, and the numerous illustrations, chiefly reductions of working drawings, are valuable. The authors are also to be commended for their highly detailed Table of Contents, which adds to the usefulness of the, subject matter. The method of mining at Franklin does not fall readily into any of the accepted classifications. It is a combination of shrinkage stoping and mining of the pillars by a modified top-slicing method. Attention may be called to the fact that, in the wider parts of the orebody, the stopes, 17 to 18 ft. (5.2 to 5.5 m.) wide are transverse; in the narrower parts, they are longitudinal, that is, in the direction of the' strike. This varia-tion is made necessary by the shape and character of the deposit, and distinguishes practice at Franklin from that in some of the western mines. The direction of the stops is changed from transverse to longitudinal when the orebody narrows sufficiently to make the length of a transverse stope approximately equal to its width. Some of the longitudinal stopes exceed 120 ft. (36 m.) in length, and when the hanging wall is bad, requiring prompt filling, three operations' proceed simul-taneously in the same stope, viz., ore is broken at one end, while drawing down goes on in the middle, and filling at the other end. Each transverse stope or chamber is begun by a crosscut from foot to hanging wall, which is afterward enlarged to the stone width and to a height of 12 or 15 ft. (3.7 or 4.6 m.). This preliminary work is done only once for each stope, because the stope is carried up far enough to continue stoping

During the last three decades a great many arguments have been presented on the subject of "mosaicJ' or "blockJJ structures of metals. Apparently because of insufficient evidence, the "block-structure" theories have never been widely understood among the physical metallurgists in this country, and most investigators among the few that have tried to demonstrate the existence of such an inner strutture Of crystals or grains have failed to recognize also the existence of a lamellar structure. Moreover, little thought has been given to justify the existence of such "lamellar" or "mosaic-block" structures on a theoretical basis. Since properties such as Plasticity; ferro-magnetism, hardness, diffusion, and others may be explained by structural faults in the lattice network of the crystals: the great importance of a more detailed knowledge of the structure within crystals or grains becomes now evident. Because Of the vast extent of the field Of submicroscopic structures, it shall be the purpose Of this paper only to review the more important of the results obtained by other investigators, especially in Germany, where a great deal of attention has been given to mosaic structure during the last three years. The origin of this mosaic patternt and effects of cold reduction and recrystallization will be shown in further studies later on. Imperfections in Crystals The many terms used in the literature to denote structural types of crystals are often not clearly defined. To clear up some of the confusion, the meaning of the more important terms will be given here. ideal, or perfect without any structural imperfections are called "ideal crystals,,or ''Perfect'' crystals,n meaning a Homogeneous interior structure of atoms, ions or molecules, as the case may be. In other words, at every point in the interior of the crystal exactly the same orientation of the crystallographic axes of the coordinate system would exist. The Surface of such a body, if etched with an appropriate etching reagent, would reflect light with perfect uniformity. Crystals of this type are almost nonexistent. Real Crystals.—L'Real crystals"' may contain various types of structural defects, which can be classified into: (I) lineage structure, (2) mosaic-block structure, (3) lamellar structure. The inhomogeneities many,in these groups mean that the orientation of the crystallographic aies will not be the same at every point within the interior of a crystal (or grain of a poly crystalline body). 'Perjecl Real Crystals.—The term "perfect real crystals " is generally used to describe crystals with minute structural or thermo-dynamical inhomogeneities. The former

Results of the application of geo1ogic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program's beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphi-cally controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore. A routine program of grade control was started in the White Pine mine in August 1961. The program is based upon development and application of geologic knowledge to assist mine operating personnel to increase the grade of ore, primarily by accurate stratigraphic control and selection of areas for development on the basis of grade distribution trends. Geologists work closely with mine supervisors to offer the necessary geologic guidance. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION OF COPPER The important rock series in the White Pine area is comprised of three formations of late Precambrian age. In descending order they are the Freda sandstone, Nonesuch shale, and Copper Harbor conglomerate. The Nonesuch shale is about 600 ft thick. Economic copper concentration occurs only in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the formation; however, within a restricted area along the southwest side of the mine the uppermost 1 to 7 ft of the Copper Harbor conglomerate (lower sandstone) contain sufficient quantities of copper to be included in the ore column. The ore consists primarily of chalcocite with subordinate native copper disseminated in shales, siltstones, and sandstones. MINE BOUNDARIES AND STRUCTURE The mine area is bounded on the west by the sub-outcrop of basal Nonesuch at bed rock surface and on the southwest by the White Pine fault (Fig. 1). The south and southeast limit of the orebody is reasonably well delineated by thinning or pinch-out of favorable host beds. Northern, northeastern, and eastern limits have not been established. The White Pine fault is actually a wide zone of shearing which strikes approximately N 40° W. It is downthrown on the southwest side and dips steeply to the northeast. Maximum vertical displacement is about 1500 ft.

Professor Kim's excellent review article1 on ultimate pit planning contains a statement of the apparently widely held but incorrect belief that "kriging provides information on the confidence limits around the estimate which no other extension technique is capable of supplying." If a geostatistical approach is valid, there are several good reasons for using kriging but uniquely provided confidence limits is not among them. If kriging is possible, then confidence limits can be calculated for any other linear estimate. Kriging is the procedure which finds the weighing coefficients which minimize the estimation variance [ ] is the variance of blocks like the one being estimated. wi is the covariance of the estimated block and the i-th sample. oij is the covariance of the i-th sample and the j-th sample. Ai is the weighing coefficient for the i-th sample. N is the number of samples. The formula for estimation variance can also be used to calculate confidence limits on blocks estimated by any linear combination of sample grades including: 1) Polygons a. Hole nearest block centroid is assigned weight 1. All other holes are assigned weight 0. b. Polygonal area weighing. The samples are assigned weights directly proportional to their polygonal areas of influence within the block. The weights sum to 1. 2) Inverse distance weighing. The samples are assigned weights directly proportional to the reciprocal of their distance to some power from the block centriod. The weights sum to 1. Often only holes nearer than a certain distance and/or the nearest hole in each octant is considered. If there is an antisotropy to the ore body, an elliptical transformation often gives more accurate results. The most popular inverse distance weighing function is inverse squared distances (IDS). 3) Simple average. All samples within a certain distance are assigned the same weights which sum to 1. As an example of the applicability of the above formula to any linear estimate an internal verification on copper grade of 665 blast holes on the 1040 bench at Utah's Island Copper mine is presented. Internal verification is simple and applicable to non-linear estimates as well. Any sample (drill hole, bulk, trench, or chip) is dropped out, the value of the dropped sample estimated and compared with the actual value. If this is done for all samples, a measure of confidence limits is obtained. Internal verification is used in Cominco's MEPS system4 and in the BLUEPACK system.5 Comparison of block values against estimates697 is not dissimilar to internal verification. Isothermal sections in the copper -rich region of the Cu-Si-Zn a1by system have been determined at 8473 760; 6003 and 482°C by means of microscopic examination with confirmatory X-ray diffraction work. The stability of the bee 0 phase decreases both with decreasing temperature and with increasing copper content. The silicon-n&apos;ch 0 phase decomposes upon quenching from high temperatures either by a martensitic or by a "massive" transformation, depending upon the solute content. A two-phase equilibrium is found to exist in the Cu-Si-Zn system between the hep < phase of the Cu-Si system and the bee ß phase of the Cu-Zn system. It is shown that the isothermal limits of the primary solid solution at 760; 6003 and 482°C are in part affected by the intermediate phases which follow them in the ternary system Possible electron-concentration and size effects upon phase boundaries are discussed. ALTHOUGH the mechanical and physical properties of silicon brasses have been measured in great detail, the factors which influence these properties are not well-understood, partly because the knowledge of the phase relationships in the Cu-Si-Zn system is limited. Gould and Ray1 studied the effects of silicon upon the hardness and structure of Cu-15 pet Zn and Cu-40 pet Zn alloys. They proposed an isothermal section at 800°C which was not based upon experimental data, since the binary phase diagrams had not been completely determined. Using Cu-Si-Zn alloys containing approximately 5 wt pet Si, vaders2 determined the boundary, at 750°C, between the copper-rich solid solution and an unidentified second phase. Masing and wallbaum3 examined a vertical section through the ternary diagram in the region between Cu-20 pet Zn and Cu-10 pet Si alloys, but they emphasized uncertainty about their data. Mima and Hasegawa4 studied the liquidus surface of Cu-Si-Zn alloys, phase transformations in high silicon-bearing (20 to 25 at. pet) alloys,5 and the phase relations in low silicon-bearing Cu-Si-Zn alloys.6 Their experiments were based upon thermal analyses and metallographic observations. The compositions of the phase boundaries were not determined with high precision, and the crystal structures of the phases were not reported. Because of uncertainties in the existing literature, it became of interest to determine more accurately the phase relations in copper-rich Cu-Si-Zn alloys. The crystal structures, stability, and phase boundaries of the primary solid solutions and several intermediate phases were determined, and the data are reported as partial isothermal sections.

The Army Reorganization Act, which became effective July 1, 1916, contains a provision authorizing the organization of an Officers&apos; Reserve, in which will be included a Corps of Reserve Engineers. There will also be an Enlisted Reserve of skilled workmen in technical lines. The special provisions of the bill relating to the Engineer Officers&apos; Reserve were formulated with the help of the Joint Committee of the several national engineering societies, which has been at work on the matter for over a year with the War Department and Committees of Congress. This paper is intended as a contribution to our knowledge of the mechanism of comminution and of the work of crushing. In a previous paper1 it was shown that with quartz comminution proceeds as follows: 1. The size distribution of broken fragments made by a single fracture is such that the new surface on each grade is the same. 2. Multiple fracturing results in a size distribution such that in the he sizes the surface per grade is the same in every grade; in coarse sizes the surface per grade decreases gradually with increasing size. In that paper it was mentioned that determinations on minerals other than quartz were in course of completion in order to establish the generality of these observations. In this paper, condensed data1 are presented for galena, pyrite and glass. Galena and pyrite are crystalline materials and glass is noncrystalline. Galena has excellent cubic cleavage. Pyrite, although cubical, does not have marked cleavage. Quartz, on which the original determinations were made, does not cleave and although crystalline (hexagonal) breaks conchoidally. Glass breaks much like quartz. It is apparent, therefore, that the minerals selected represent some range in character of the solid without covering all possible types. Glass Fifteen glass marbles were crushed individually in the pendulum crusher described in the preceding paper,&apos; then subjected to careful screening for 30 min. Six sized fractions were selected and cleaned in a hot 0.12 N solution of hydrochloric acid, washed with distilled water and dried on a hot plate. This was followed by an examination with a binocular microscope, to remove foreign matters not eliminated in cleaning as well as to eliminate "compacts" of fine particles. These compacts are groups of he irag-ments that seem to be mechanically stuck together as a result of localized compacting during the comminution operation. The presence and the abundance of these compacts may be related to the amount and direction of the forces applied in different crushing devices. Since, properly, such compacts should be entirely eliminated in the sizing analyses, it is necessary to remove them to the last before making surface determinations on sized fractions. For example, with a — 28 + 35-mesh glass the surface areas of two samples, one cleaned with acid and under the binocular, the other only washed, were 102 and 172. cm&apos; per gram, respectively. Examination of the samples under an Ultropak microscope showed that washing alone failed to remove the compacts and also that it fails to remove certain fine dusts attached to the particles. Tailings water from primary flotation concentrators usually contains minor amounts of pollutants such as heavy metals, cyanide and solubilized molybdenum, which are solubilized in the flotation process. A review of various techniques to reduce pollutants to acceptable levels is presented. Generally, molybdenite ores are processed by conventional size-reduction techniques, followed by flotation to produce a metallurgical-grade concentrate of 88% to 92% MoS2. Reagents commonly used in the milling process include: vapor oil (collector); pine oil, MIBC (frother); Dowfroth 250 (water-soluble frother); lime (rougher pH control); and sodium cyanide (Fe and Cu depressor). For lead depression, Nokes reagent is stage-added to the regrind mills and cleaners. Flocculant is added to obtain clear overflows in the intermediate thickeners.

REESE, Monessen, Pa.-I came to the conclusion that Mr. McKee must be using a poor grade of scrap, therefore his loss was high. Mr. Franchot said that there was ex-cess heat in the stack. There is no excess heat in the hearth, therefore, any heat that is used to melt this scrap must come from the stack. By using scrap in a blast furnace you can utilize this excess heat in the stack. The amount of scrap that can be used in any particular furnace involves a direct relation to the efficiency of that furnace. If a furnace is running on a very low-coke rate, you will not be able to use much; if on a high-coke rate, you can use considerable scrap, probably several times as much as that mentioned in these papers-without using any additional coke. This excess heat can be utilized with-out practically any serious mechanical and operating diffi-culties such as might be occasioned by removing gas from a point other than the top of the furnace. I do not think, scrap has any effect on the iron, although I think some foundrymen are trying to prove that it has, and perhaps some open-hearth men may have that idea.

The performance of the most common type of low-intensity dry magnetic separator is analyzed on the basis of fundamental physical principles. Expressions are developed for estimating the optimal choice of design and operating parameters for beneficiation of magnetite ores. By proper choice of these parameters either a high-grade concentrate or a low-grade tailing can be produced from an incompletely liberated feed.

WHEN apparent resistivity data are taken with the symmetrical Wenner 4-electrode spread, a fixed center position is used and readings are taken for values of electrode separation. Basic data consist of apparent resistivity plotted against separation of adjacent electrodes. The interpreter attempts to infer geologic structure, such as the depth to discontinuities and the nature of subsurface earth materials. An earlier paper1 described methods for interpreting resistivity data. All of these involve a severe assumption, namely that the earth in the region of interest consists of horizontal layers, electrically homogeneous and isotropic. The actual earth never satisfies this assumption exactly and may deviate from it so much that none of the above methods can be applied. Attempts in three directions have been made to modify the assumption so that it approaches known geologic complexity more closely.

As legislation to minimize pollution in effluent streams becomes stricter, it is important to treat used acid pickling baths before discharge. This is usually achieved by neutralization of the acids and precipitation of the dissolved metals in such a way that neither acids nor metals can be re-used. A process has been designed and tested on a pilot plant scale to recover both acids and metals from a stainless steel pickling bath leaving only Na2SOs in the effluent. In this process, H2SOr is added to the spent pickling liquor and the recovery of the pickling acids HN03 and HF is achieved by solvent extraction, using TBP in kerosene as the organic solvent. The extracted acids are stripped with water, giving an acid concentration high enough for direct use in the pickling bath. Molybdenum is also extracted by TBP and is recovered in a separate step. The other metals, Fe, Cr and Ni, are precipitated from the raffinate as hydroxides, dried and recycled to the metal process. In evaluating this process, comparative experiments with mixer-settler and pulsed column have been performed. The process described is being considered for use by a Swedish company pickling 70,000 tons per annum of stainless steel.

Increasing urbanization and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This means expanded surface mining and despoiled land near population centers. Highly competitive land use demands justify serious consideration of premining planning for multiple land use and reclamation concurrent with mining. 1-5 Formulating solutions to environmentally and economically sound uses requires a comprehensive approach based on properties of the natural resource base--geology, soils, and water. A study of sand and gravel mining within Pleistocene-Holocene fluvial deposits in Colorado County. Texas [(Fig. 1)] illustrates how physical limitations imposed by the resource base are determined.6,7 Data from drillers, logs of water wells, test boreholes, field observations, and laboratory analyses are used to evaluate these physical controls. Knowledge of the thickness and composition of overburden aids in developing optimum reclamation and revegetation plans. Most of the overburden in the study area [(Fig. 2, 3)] is a clayey mud with variable amounts of silt and fine sand. A comparative textural analysis of overburden and native soil is used to assess changes incurred by mining and for evaluating other physical characteristics, e.g., ability to support crops, permeability. and shrink-swell potential. Textures are correlated with soil types found in the area [(Table 1)] to get an approximation of probable surface properties expected from these mined materials. Results of textural analyses [(Table 2)] indicate that separating topsoils from overburden during mining is not necessary because the range of overburden textures is about that of native soils. However, more data is needed on nutrient deficiencies to evaluate fertilizer requirements for successful revegetation.*6
