Money is one of the most .pervasive elements in human life. The compensation for a workman's daily efforts is expressed as a wage and is measured in money. What an individual may consume depends largely on his income which also is expressed in terms of money. If he would start an enterprise its size would be determined in large part by the amount of money available for capitalization and its success would be measured in net income expressed in money. In short, the most widely used common denominator for comparing merchandise, real property, jobs, enterprises, gross national product, or personal success is money. Despite this use of money by almost everyone past infancy to express his appraisal of the in- numerable values he sees around himself, the complexity of the device called money makes its nature and workings a mystery to most users. Some of the difficulty in understanding money results from the fact that it has three distinct but interrelated functions: (1) a medium of exchange, (2) a unit of account, and (3) a store of value. In many statements about money the discussion moves from one function of money to another without the speaker or the listener recognizing the changes. For example, the housewife says "We took the money we had saved up to make the down payment and after twelve monthly payments the television will be ours." When this housewife spoke of "saving up the down payment" she referred to money in its function as a store of value; when she spoke of "the down payment" she was using money as a medium of exchange; and when she referred to the "monthly payments" she spoke of money as a unit of account. Another cause of confusion in understanding money is its paradoxical nature in that it represents both the power to produce and the power to consume. For example, when the rich uncle dies one nephew may regard his inheritance as an opportunity to buy a farm and leave the ranks of the wage earners to become an independent producer, whereas the other nephew may regard his portion as the means of living in complete leisure as a pure consumer.

Science attracts the attention and interest of an individual or an industry in general only in proportion to the apparent direct application to its immediate welfare or benefit. Engineering accomplishments, as aphlied science, therefore receive more recognition than the scientific discoveries on which they are based. Even self-evident truth needs endless repetition before recognition: engineering as applied science cannot advance beyond the science on which it is founded. Scientific research, and discovery, is sometimes forced by the limitations recognized by those active in its development for the use of society and industry and sometimes results from an apparently superficially illogical curiosity about natural phenomena. Research has received inadequate support except in industries born in the laboratory, the chemical and electrical industries, from which many lessons might well be drawn by their elder associates. The rapid growth of these industries has been largely due to close cooperation of scientists and engineers. Most rapid advance is made when the research worker and the engineer keep in close touch with each other's ideas and problems. Many of the developments of modern industry are based on discoveries buried for years in scientific journals because the "time was not ripe" at their discovery. The situation with regard to utilization of coal is quite the oppositre. The fundamental facts in regard to the scientific aspects of the problem of developing the energy from coal are scarcely known. The engineer, without much scientific cooperation, has accomplished much in increasing the number of kilowatt-hours per pound of coal from 0.31 in 1919 to 0.69 in 1934, in increasing the 1000 gross ton-miles of freight hauled from 12.2 to 16.4 per ton of coal in the same period, in fuel economy in production of coke, and in developing the production of motor fuel in Germany and England by hydrogenation of coal. This lack of scientific research on the utilization of our most important natural resource, coal, has been due undoubtedly in large part to the reluctance of investigators to study the interrelationships involved in the complicated processes in which coal is used. The solubility of water in silicate melts of various compositions was measured. The basicity of the silicate did not appreciably affect the water solu-bulity at low-base content (acid compositions). Near the orthosilicate composition the solubility increased with basicity for silicates in which the cation displayed a weak ion-oxygen attraction and apparently decreased for those in which the cation showed a strong ion-oxygen attraction; metasilicates of the former class dissolved more water than those of the latter. Temperature had little effect on water solubility. The experimental results are interpreted on the basis of two modes of solution, the contribution of one decreasing, and that of the other increas -ing, with increased melt basicity. In the former, solution occurs through interaction with doubly-bonded oxygen atoms and in the latter, through interaction with singly-bonded oxygen atoms, or, in very basic melts, through reaction with free oxygen ions. THE hydrogen content of a steel melt is in a large measure determined by water dissolved in the slag. In some glasses water may be a major cause of "seeds". Water vapor in the furnace atmosphere is the primary source in both instances. A knowledge of the mechanism of water solution in silicate melts should help in assessment of practical methods for its control in steelmaking and glass refining. Walsh et a1.l measured the water content, expressed as hydrogen, of 40 pct lime-20 pct alumina-40 pct silica and 62 pct manganese oxide-38 pct silica melts as a function of the steam partial pressure, in equilibrium with the melt. Tomlinson 2 and, also, Russell3 investigated this relationship for a molten 30 pct soda-70 pct silica glass. In all three investigations, the solubility of water was found to be proportional to the square root of the partial pressure of steam. Moulson and Roberts 4 confirmed this relationship for a silica glass. On the basis of the square root relationship, Tomlinson2 and Russell3 interpreted the solution reaction as "network-breaking", similar to that expected on the addition of metal oxides to silica. Walsh et al.' postulated two possible modes of solution, one the mechanism suggested by Tomlinson and Russell and the other the reaction of the water molecule with an oxygen ion to form hydroxyl ions. These two modes of solution suggest opposite effects of melt basicity on water solubility. However, little appears to be known about the effect of melt basicity on water solubility. Walsh et a1.l found, in the lime-silica system, that the water content increased slightly with increased basicity. As these authors pointed out, this does not appear to be in accord with their further observation that slags containing little or no silica dissolve very little water. Kurkjian and Russell5 measured the effect of basicity on water solubility in alkali silicates in the composition range 15 to 45 mole pct alkali oxide. They found a minimum in the water content at about 25 mole pct alkali. This was interpreted on the basis of two concurrent solution reacZions; one in which solubility was proportional to the activity of doubly-bonded oxygen and, in the other, proportional to the activity of singly-bonded oxygen. The present work was aimed at establishing the effect of basicity on water solubility in silicate melts over as wide a range of compositions as practical. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The silicate melt was equilibrated with a "carrier-gas" of accurately known water content, quenched, and analyzed for water by a vacuum fusion technique. Some pertinent details of the equilibration procedure, analysis technique, preparation, and handling of the silicates are given below. Gas-Silicate Equilibration. The apparatus used to equilibrate the melt with the gas mixture was similar to that used by Walsh et al.' but with some important modifications.6 Purification trains were provided for nitrogen and hydrogen; whenever air or oxygen was used as carrier gas the nitrogen purifiCation train was used with the copper furnace at room temperature. Gas flow rates were measured with capillary flow meters; bleeders filled with a mixture of dibromo and tribromo ethyl benzene (density about 2 g per cc) were used for convenience in controlling flow rates.

The response of geologic materials subject to nuclear weapon effects is of considerable interest in the design of buried protective construction. Recently, more consideration has been given to placing such structures in rock rather than in soil. Although rock has the obvious advantages of high strength and low deformability, discontinuities such as joints and fault planes severely complicate any response analysis. Nevertheless, some knowledge of the effects of these discontinuities must be developed, even if that knowledge remains largely qualitative in nature. In this paper, we present a constitutive description of cracked rock subject to uniaxial shock loading. The constitutive equations are based on certain average response characteristics of a particular cracked rock model. Rather than attempt to represent each material discontinuity individually, we have incorporated the discontinuity effects into constitutive relationships for a continuous medium. The resulting equations are suitable for use in hydrodynamic computer codes presently used for ground motion calculations. APPROACH The continuum description which will be presented below is based on a detailed analysis of a particular cracked rock model. This model can be visualized as a sequence of plates (representing the intact rock) separated by gaps (representing the discontinuities). Numerous investigations of the effects of the various impurities common to commercial coppers have been published, and the data have found wide use in industry. Naturally, emphasis has been placed on the oxygen-bearing coppers of the tough-pitch variety, but need is now evident for data covering the oxygen-free condition as well. Furthermore, relatively few of the important reactions between oxygen and the various impurities are well understood, and often the data at hand are not applicable to the low concentrations encountered in commercial coppers. This paper presents the changes in conductivity and softening temperature derived from individual additions of the group VIII triad, iron, cobalt and nickel, to high-purity copper, and constitutes a portion of the copper-research program being conducted at the Central Research Laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The method of preparation of high-purity copper and its alloys in either the oxygen-free or oxygen-bearing form has been described previous1y.l The purity of this material, and the methods developed to produce it, provide the means for direct investigation of the very low concentration range in which the various impurities generally exist in commercial coppers. The usual necessity for extrapolation to this range using the results obtained from higher concentrations, and the interfering effects of extraneous impurities, are thus simultaneously circumvented. Since previously published data have adequately presented the effects of higher concentrations of iron, cobalt and nickel, the present investigation has been confined to the composition range o to 0.05 per cent. All alloys were initially prepared in the form of oxygen-free continuous cast rod, the weighed alloying additions in suitable form being charged with the pure copper to the continuous casting crucible. The best of the available high-purity alloying materials were used, and spectrographic analyses confirmed the absence of interfering elements from the alloys formed. Each series was compounded in the direction of increasing concentration, starting with pure copper in a new crucible and finishing with the 0.05 per cent alloy. Composition was closely controlled by adding the alloying element in the form of a carefully compounded and analyzed master alloy rendered uniform by continuous casting. The accuracy of this method of synihesis was proved by chemical analysis of the more concentrated alloys, and, accordingly, there is every reason to credit the stated composition of the very dilute alloys in the range where chemical analysis becomes highly uncertain. The mining district of Sao Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Minerasgo de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in São Fidelis—the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. Mineralization and Ores The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60" and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Mac- abu), the Sao Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and Sao Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in Sao Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydro-thermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. The paragenesis, according to samples from Saudade, seems to be as follows, the earlier minerals being listed first: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, with quartz concomitant to the three and graphite formed later. ABOUT three years ago a distinctive new type of crushing and grinding equipment, known as the Hadsel mill, was announced. A description appeared in the November, 1932, issue of this magazine. Any machine that would take run-of-mine ore and reduce it, in one operation, and at a reasonable cost, to a size suitable for metallurgical treatment was bound to attract much interest, as the original Hadsel mill did. The first commercial sizes were built with the drum supported by an overhung shaft and partly immersed in a tank. The drum carried inside and outside buckets to lift the ore, which was dropped as the drum revolved onto stationary breaker plates projecting into the drum from the opposite tank wall. The coarser material settled back into the inside buckets. Intermediate sizes were carried into the tank, and this material was scooped out by the outside buckets and deposited hack in the drum for further grinding. The fines were carried out of the mill with the wash water over an adjustable weir at one side of the tank.

Electrical resistivity of a number of pure liquid metals and alloys has been measured as a function of temperature and composition. The data show a close correspondence between the liquid and solid states with respect to thermal, structural, and compositional relationships. STUDY of diffuse scattering of X-rays by liquid metals1 has demonstrated that some degree of order persists above the melting point and that the atomic constitution of liquids is more analogous to the solid state than to a gas. Consideration of the change in various thermodynamic properties that accompanies transformation from solid to liquid leads to the same general conclusion.² evertheless, specific knowledge of the constitution of the liquid state is limited when compared with that of the solid and gaseous states owing, in part, to the difficulty of interpreting the X-ray data and in part to the indirect character of deductions based on thermodynamic data. Of the structure-sensitive physical properties, electrical resistivity of liquid metals is perhaps the most easily interpretable, particularly when comparison is made with the solid state. According to the available data, most of which was obtained prior to 1914, cubic metals exhibit a normal linear and positive temperature dependence in the liquid state and the data have been accepted without question. The divalent metals, zinc and cadmium, are apparently exceptional in that resistivity is not linear with temperature and it passes through a minimum. Mercury also exhibits a nonlinear temperature dependence but the slope is always positive. Important comparisons with magnesium could not be made at the time the following work was undertaken because the necessary experimental data were not available. Data on liquid solutions are very limited and are largely from a single source."-" Based on Bornemann's work, Norbury7 pointed out that the resistivity of liquid copper alloys appeared to be dependent on the valence of the solute and that the increase due to the solute was of the same order as in the solid state. However, large extrapolations were involved and no quantitative relationship was developed. Therefore, before proceeding with additional deductions regarding the resistivity of liquid metals and interpretation in terms of structure, it appeared necessary to verify and extend the previous work with particular emphasis on divalent metals and the effect of alloying elements of different valence in dilute liquid solutions. As a part of a symposium on the relations of structure to ore deposition, in February 1938, the writer presented some tentative opinions derived from his experience with a number of important lead-zinc replacement deposits. These ideas were set forth, as a basis for discussion and a stimulus to further inquiry, in a mimeographed leaflet that read as follows: Intimate acquaintance with a number of lead and zinc deposits in metamorphosed limestones seems to indicate the existence of certain common features from which can be established some general principles governing the localization of ore in this type of formation. It is suspected that these principles can be applied, with modifications, to mineralization in unmetamorphosed limestone. In metamorphosed formations, some observed rules are as follows: 1. Bands or masses of pure limestone are very resistant to replacement by ore solutions, and are likely either to contain no ore or to resist replacement until near the end of mineralization. The reason for this apparently is physical, not chemical, since microscopic data indicate that when ore is deposited by far the greater part of it substitutes for carbonate. The chief factor is believed to be a lack of porosity in massive limestone that has undergone flowage and recrystallization. 2. Masses of intensely siliceous or silicated rock are likewise unfavorable ore receptacles. This seems to be accounted for by two factors: (a) chemical unsuit-ability or resistance to replacement, and (b) physical resistance to small-scale brecci-ation, which might faeilitate the opening of effective channelways for solutions. Some low-grade ore may occur, however, and also sporadic fracture fillings. 3. The optimum condition for ore reception appears to be found in bands or areas containing carbonate and silicates (or quartz) intimately mingled in something like equal proportions. In this situation movement is likely to result in mixed flowage and fracture, producing a finc-textured porosity that admits solutions freely and provides access to an abundance of replaceable carbonate. Cleavage cracks in some minerals such as diopside are believed to facilitate the penetration of solutions. 4. Certain minerals or assemblages are regarded as favorable impurities in a limestone and others as unfavorable. Original quartz, and subsequently developed diopside, and perhaps garnet, are typical favorable pre-ore gangue; in general rather equidimensional, brittle minerals. Tremolite, biotite, and probably wollastonite, are typical unfavorable pre-ore gangue; in general highly elongated and somewhat flexible minerals likely to develop under strong shearing stresses. 5. Tentative opinion is that the ratio of lime and magnesia in a limestone is of little or no importance.

A three-dimensional photoelastic study was made to determine the stress state around the wall and bottom of a wellbore due to fluid pressure within the wellbore and unequal principal geostatic stresses. Models simulating the wellbore were made from a phthalic anhydride-cured epoxy resin. The frozen stress technique of three-dimensional photoelastic-ity was used to determine the stresses within the model. Two separate problems were solved: (1) hydrostatic pressure on all sides of the model with the exception of the inside of the hole, and (2) uniaxial compression perpendicular to the center line of the hole. The results are presented in the form of contour curves for each stress component. The curves cover a region which extends several hole radii from the bottom and wall of the hole. By proper use of these results, the state of stress may be calculated for any point on the wall or bottom of the hole, as well as for any point within the material that surrounds the hole. A systematic method is given for calculating these stress components for any combination of fluid pressure within the wellbore and system of unequal principal geostatic stresses, provided one of the principal geostatic stresses is parallel with the wellbore. The results show that stresses around the wall and bottom of a wellbore, induced by an uneyual system of principal geostatic stresses, are appreciably different from those induced by geostatic stresses that are hydrostatic. For uneyual principal geostatic stresses, the experimentally determined stresses on the wall of the hole several radii from the bottom are in good agreement with the stresses calculated by elastic theory. INTRODUCTION Interest in the problem of determining the stresses around and near the bottom of a wellbore, due to geostatic loading and fluid pressure within the wellbore, originated in the petroleum industry. The stresses on the wall of the wellbore are of interest due to their relation to lost circulation during drilling, the fracturing of formations during squeeze cementing and hydraulic fracturing of producing formations. The stresses on the bottom of the hole are of interest to the drilling segment of the industry because to produce a hole in the earth it is necessary to remove material from the bottom of the hole. This removal of material is produced by structural failure of the rock, whatever the criterion for failure may be. Cunningham and Eeninkl have shown that for certain conditions the effect on drilling rate of the bottom-hole stresses caused by a hydrostatic overburden pressure is small compared to other effects. This question, however, needs further experimental and analytical investigation. Much information concerning the stresses on the walls of wellbores has been published considering both equal and unequal principal geostatic stresses. The problem of determining the stresses around the bottom of the wellbore is considerably more complicated. However, previous investigators have obtained numerical and experimental solutions to the problem for equal principal geostatic stresses. whitworth2 and woods3 have obtained numerical solutions. word415 obtained a three-dimensional photoelastic solution, Durelli and Deily 6 obtained surface stresses only by photoelastic means, and Cheatham and Wilhoit7 determined the stresses around the bottom of a short cylindrical cavity. While Miles and McGuire, Harrison and Kieschnick and Hubbert and Willis 10 obtained the stresses on the wall of a wellbore for unequal principal geostatic stresses, they did not concern themselves with the stresses near the bottom of the hole. The estimates made by Hubbert and Willis of the differences between the principal geostatic stresses indicate that, to obtain a satisfactory solution for the stresses around the bottom of a wellbore, unequal principal geostatic stresses should be considered. EXPERIMENTS performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This con-clusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely con-solidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be intro-duced was the cementing material.

For general purposes, insulating materials may be any of those mineral substances that provide a barrier between a desired human environmental feature and an unwanted condition. In this sense, radiation shields, electrical insulations, cryogenic insulation, and acoustical barriers would qualify. For this chapter only the thermal and acoustic insulations used for the median range of normal comfort control will be covered. Because of their magnitude and complexity the other fields are left to other chapters. In another sense, this section deals only with the ultra-lightweight aggregates and insulations, rather than the multitude of light-weight structural materials. Definitions and Uses The insulating materials covered in this chapter are the three groups of mineral products that provide thermal or acoustic barriers through the median temperatures encountered in home and industry. The three mineral categories are perlite, vermiculite, and the silicate wools whether they be categorized as glass, mineral, or rock. Perlites are those amorphous aluminum silicates with minor impurities that take the form of a felsitic, glassy lava possessing a pearl-like luster and concentric cracking. In a more commercial sense the term is used to describe either the natural or processed acidic, volcanic glass, containing from 2 to 5% combined water, that may be converted to a frothy mass by heating rapidly to the softening point. Vermiculites are micaceous, hydrated magnesium iron aluminum sheet silicates of varying composition. Commercial vermiculites are any of these sheet silicates that are capable of sufficient expansion on rapid heating to make an acceptable, highly porous product. Mineral wools, rock wools, silicate cottons, glass fiber are generic names for manufactured fibers in which the fiber forming substance may be slag, certain rocks, or glass. The fibers may be made by a blowing or spinning process. The resultant fibers may be felted or matted or gathered in the manner best suited to the use. The three groups may be used competitively to insulate ceilings and walls. The fibers have strong advantages in this area as they may be manufactured in batts that are stable in residential wall construction. The perlites and vermiculites are more suited to insulate cores and cavities of masonry walls and as plaster and concrete aggregates for thermal insulations. Vermiculite is widely used for insulating attic floors. Because of manufacturing techniques and controls, the glass fibers have made great strides as composites in the plastics industry but only a few of these uses classify in the insulation category.

DURING an investigation into the effect of heat-treatment on the creep properties of the magnesium alloy ZW1, (1 pct Zn, 0.6 pct Zr), the previously published methods of final polishing were found to be unsatisfactory. A new diamond-polishing technique has been developed to facilitate the study of fine precipitates in this and other magnesium alloys, and is described in this note. The sectioning and coarse grinding techniques are those of Fox and Hall,' and Hess and Cieorge.' Pre- liminary mechanical polishing is done with 6-µ, and 1-µ( grades of diamond compound on 'Microcloth' using a lubricant of 'Hyprez' oil. When the conventional technique is used with a 1/4- µ diamond wheel for the final polishing of magnesium alloys, scratching is likely to result from the abrasive action of the 'Microcloth' nap on the soft metal surface. This problem has been overcome by the use of a cream on the wheel in order to separate the specimen surface from the polishing cloth. To prepare this cream, a solution of 6-ml tri-ethanolamine in 75-ml water is stirred into 12.5 g stearic acid at a constant temperature of 80° to 90°C. The cream is allowed to cool, and is then 'whipped' to a smooth consistency with 100-ml 'Hyprez' oil. Before polishing, the diamond loaded 'Microcloth' is moistened with a few drops of 'Hyprez' oil, then a small amount of cream is worked into the nap. For the best results a wheel speed of 500 rpm should be used for polishing, and the specimen should be held by hand with a light pressure while being rotated in the opposite direction to the wheel. After polishing it is necessary to swab the specimen thoroughly in methylated spirits to remove residual cream and oil from the surface in order to avoid uneven etching and drying stains. Fig. 1 shows the surface finish obtained on a specimen by polishing on a 1/4- ° diamond wheel using the cream, and Figs. 2 and 3 the precipitate observed in ZW1 after polishing, and etching for two seconds in nitric acid 15 pct in ethylene glycol. This new diamond-polishing technique has made a valuable contribution to the programme of metal-lographic research on ZW1 and has become a routine laboratory practice for other low alloy content magnesium alloys.

Active interest in the North Central Texas area centered in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone-producing zone, near the town of Avoca, in the northeast part of Jones County. This producing horizon was discovered in 1937, in the Iron Mountain Oil Company's well No. 1 Olander, in sec. 196, B.B.B. & C. survey, at 3238 to 3250 ft. During the development of this pool, it was generally referred to as the Avoca pool. As a second pool has been discovered in the same producing zone, also near the town of Avoca, the writer has taken the liberty of changing the name of the original Avoca pool to Avoca-Olander pool. Forty producers had been drilled in the Avoca-Olander pool by the end of 1938; their initial ranged from 28 to 300 bbl. per hour. Stimulus was given to the interest in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone when the Ungren-Frazier No. 1 Griffin, in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, Jones County, found the limestone from 3225 to 3250 ft., with an initial production of 931 bbl. per day. (This new pool has been given the name of Avoca-Griffin pool, by the writer.) The best well to be completed, up to the present time, is the Bert Fields No. 1 Taylor in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, which had an initial production of 748 bbl. in 3 hours. The Owen-Snebold No. 1 McKeever in sec. 158, B.B.B. & C. survey, in northwest Shackelford County, added to the interest in the Palo Pinto limestone when it extended the Ivy pool with a well in the Palo Pinto limestone from 3145 to 3183 ft., and was estimated good for 6,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 6000 bbl. of oil per day. During 1938, Stonewall County obtained its first commercial producer when the Stonewall Oil Co. in No. 1 Parriott discovered the Palo Pinto limestone saturated from 5169 to 5176 ft. and tested 371 bbl. per day. Two new producing horizons were discovered about 2 miles east of the old Noddle Creek pool, Jones County; the first, the Humble Oil & Refining Co. No. 1 Irvin, in sec. 48, block 18, T. & P. R. R. Co. survey, which had saturated limestone from 2550 to 2567 ft. and was good for 100 bbl. per day; the second, in the Humble No. 1 Horton, sec. 40, which

Controlled pre-grouting is a technique developed during a period of more than ten Years experience, in an effort to produce safer, drier and more economical mine shaft sinking. The technique involves a knowledge Of hydro-mechanics, both static and dynamic, and a series of specially formulated grout mixtures to obtain several desired results through precontrolled setting time. In general, the following procedures have been used to secure the best results in controlled pre-grouting: I. Before drilling is commenced, One Of two decisions is made: one procedure, a modified form of the Francois method, is to stage drill and grout, that is, drill a limited portion of the hole, then grout and redrill that section which has been grouted, progressing in stages until the required depth is reached. We prefer this method because no casing Or grouting packers are required in the bore hole. This eliminates the risk of losing them in the bore hole due to packer failure, which might result in the expense of drilling a new grout hole. Another feature Of this approach is that smaller drill holes may be effectively used, further reducing the costs. One drawback, however, is that because of the open and small size hole, it is impractical to attempt water draw-down tests. The second alternative is to drill the bore hole, (generally NX size), to the re-quire~ depth. he casing and grouting packer are placed in the bore hole at the lowest packer setting. A small, portable, power driven, swabbing device is used in the grouting casing to test the packer and remove mud or cuttings from the bore hole below the packer. The hydrostatic level is recorded and a close estimate or test is made of the quantity of water at each packer setting. Grouting progresses upward in a series of packer settings to the surface. Occasionally, casing is inserted in the bot-tom of the bore hole from within the mine, and water pressure and volume can be obtained in this manner. This is usually dangerous because of the unknown quantity of water. 2. The grouting, mining and geological engineers at the drill location make a detailed examination of the cores and also locate proper and firm grouting packer locations. A competent driller,s opinion should be given due consideration as to the character and condition of the bore hole. 3. Several samples of formation water
