The pottery of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) is equipped to make three classes of refractories; namely, spelter vessels, spelter condensers, and high-grade fire-brick. The most important of these are the spelter vessels, on account of the extreme severity of the service which they must perform, necessitating great care in the selection of materials and in the whole process of manufacture. Next to the spelter vessels in importance come the condensers, as large numbers are used in the manufacture of spelter, and improvements in quality result in material decreases in working cost. While the fire-brick which form the laboratory, or high-temperature portion of the spelter furnaces, are placed at the foot of the list, they are nevertheless of much importance, since high quality will decrease the frequency of the always expensive shutdowns for repairs. To promote simplicity, the manufacture of these three products will be described separately in this paper, except in so far as materials and the crushing and handling system common to all are conccrned. Materials Bond Clay.—The bond clay used entirely at the Palmerton pottery is a St. Louis clay furnished by the Grand View Fire Clay Co. It is stored in a system of covered bins, and no attempt is made to weather it in the accepted sense of the term " weathering." Some years ago our clay was weathered before pugging, but we did not find the benefit sufficient to offset the additional handling and the loss of clay incurred. Furthermore, we believe that the rotting of the pugged mix (described later) accomplishes the same results to better advantage. That there is some action taking place in the clay while stored in the covered bins, however, is evidenced by an increase in volume which at times has caused damage to the retaining walls of the bins. We have at present a stock of bond clay weathering in the open, and when this is put into service an opportunity will be afforded for making comparisons with the clay as usually handled.

THIS lecture can best begin with a statement of the chief conclusion: The metallurgical industry will find profit in supporting fundamental research on dislocations. This support should be done both in their own laboratories and in universities. My lecture consists of an exposition of the basis for this conclusion. The experience on which I base it is drawn largely from two fields in solid state physics—one field is transistor electronics and the other is dislocation theory. At present the relationship of solid state physics to technology is different in these two fields. In electronics without question, the physics has led the technology. In metallurgy, on the other hand, the technology in the form of metallurgical art is far ahead of the fundamental science. In transistor electronics, physics has suggested and can still suggest previously unachieved combinations of matter that will have new and useful properties; that is, the physicist can make specific predictions. The physicist can also have some confidence that the predicted devices will actually come into existence in a matter of months or years and that they will live up to the predictions. In metallurgy, the physicist cannot to a comparable degree make predictions and have the same hope that they will lead to something new and valuable. There are a number of reasons for this difference. The first is simply historical. Transistor physics is young. It may be regarded as dating from the announcement of the transistor, in which case it is about four years old, or from the first real control of semiconductors as materials (this was accomplished largely by metallurgists, by the way) in which case it is about ten years old. Metallurgical art, on the other hand, is thousands of years old. There is no doubt that the advance of this art has been and will be hastened by a good fundamental understanding of the quantum theory of atomic phenomena. It, is too much to expect, however, that theory will soon catch up with the lead that practice has gained in a thousand years, and that theory will then point out specific pathways to better materials. It seems more probable that modern atomic theory will serve to interpret and organize information much as thermodynamics has done through phase diagrams. In this lecture, I shall emphasize an important feature common to both solid state electronics and to metallurgy. This common feature is the harmonizing principle that justifies discussing electronics and metallurgy as related topics in solid state physics. In both cases the important properties of the materials arise from imperfections. By imper- fections I mean deviations of the materials from perfect single crystals. The imperfections may be of many forms. From the point of view of utility they may be either good or bad, and a given type may be good or bad depending on circumstances. The technical material of my lecture will be divided into two parts. The first will be chiefly concerned with four types of imperfections in germanium crystals. The control of these imperfections makes possible the fabrication of useful electronic devices. A good example of such control is the junction transistor, which I shall discuss from this viewpoint later. The junction transistor, as some of you may have heard, can be used as an amplifier of electrical signals and in a number of respects surpasses what has hitherto been achieved with vacuum tubes. The second part of my technical material will be concerned with dislocations. For about fifteen years the theoretical physicist has had dislocations in mind as the most important kind of imperfection in metals. He has, however, until recently had experimental material of a highly speculative nature to back up his assertions. I am fortunate in the timing of this lecture to be able to describe some recent results that put dislocations on a far more definite basis than has been the case in the past. In fact there are now some experiments which reveal the characteristic properties of dislocations almost as clearly as experiments in transistor physics reveal the properties of holes and electrons, properties that I shall soon describe. It is this advance in the status of dislocations that emboldened me to make my initial assertion that the metallurgical industry will profit from supporting fundamental research on dislocations. Transistor Electronics In order to discuss imperfections in semiconductors, it is necessary to visualize a reference condition that may be regarded as perfect. In the cases of silicon and germanium, which find application in transistor electronics,' the perfect structure is the diamond structure shown in Fig. I. In this structure, each atom is surrounded by four neighbors with which it forms four covalent or electron-pair bonds. These bonds use all of the four valence electrons possessed by each of the silicon or germanium atoms. The electronic structure of the crystal is thus complete and perfect. A crystal of silicon or germanium with a perfect electron-pair bond structure would be an insulator, In order for electrical conduction to occur, it is necessary for imperfections to arise in the electronic structure. In this lecture, I shall discuss four possible imperfections whose symbols and relationships are indicated in Table I. We shall consider first, as an example, a crystal of silicon containing an arsenic atom as an impurity.

INTRODUCTION Coal is being mined from beneath residential areas, structures, bodies of water and other surface features in the coalfields to the north, south and west of Sydney. The particular problems faced by mine operators in these areas vary considerably due to differences in the overlying strata, the variation in the depths of cover and also depend on the number of seams being mined. Detailed subsidence work first commenced in the Southern Coalfield in 1965 and is now being carried out over areas of extraction at roost collieries. The analysis of the results of the early investigations and of the work which continues in other areas has shown that there is a consistent relationship between subsidence and mine geometry and has led to a reliable empirical method for the prediction of subsidence. In addition, particular aspects of each of the studies in the Southern Coalfield results in a clearer understanding of strata movements and of the resulting subsidence. The features of a subsidence trough apply generally to all areas but the magnitudes of specific features vary according to the stratigraphy of the particular coalfield. The aim of the subsidence work is to quantify the effects of subsidence for a range of mining geometries and mining conditions to enable the maximum safe recovery of coal from beneath surface features. The importance of local subsidence investigations is becoming more evident to mine operators and to authorities or organisations with surface interests. The subsidence work also provides important information on the stabilities of pillars of coal which remain unmined between panels of extracted coal. These pillars are not extracted either because of poor mining or geological conditions, or because pillar extraction is not part of the particular mining operation. Subsidence studies over these coal pillars clearly establish whether the pillars have remained stable or have failed to support the overlying strata. With subsidence studies continuing over several years, it is possible to assess the stabilities of these pillars on a long term basis. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY OF SUBSIDENCE Geographical setting Most of the black coal production in Australia comes from the Sydney Basin. The coal seams extend for approximately 350 km along the coast of New South Wales and inland for distances up to 150 km. The City of Sydney is located near the centre of the coastal extent of the Basin where coal has been mined at a depth of 900 m. The Sydney Basin is part of the Main Coal Province of NSW and is divided into several coal- fields. The Southern Coalfield to the south of Sydney contained 15 operating mines and produced 12.7 million tonnes of raw coal during the 12 months to June 1981. The collieries discussed later are shown in Fig. 1. The prominent topographical feature of the area is the Illawarra Escarpment which rises to 400 m above sea level, or 300 m above the coastal strip along the South Pacific Ocean. The escarpment is mainly sand- stone and the weathering of the cliff line has resulted in a covering of talus material at its base. Several collieries are located near the seams which outcrop along the escarpment. The city of Wollongong is located in a scenically attractive area on the coastal plain. The suburbs of Wollongong extend north along the coastline, south to beyond Lake Illawarra and west to the lower slopes of the escarpment. The Illawarra Escarpment forms the eastern boundary of the Woronora Plateau. On a regional scale the surface dips gently to the west and thus forms a watershed for the rivers, most of which flow in a general north westerly direction, sometimes forming steep gorges in the sandstone. These rivers join the Nepean and Hawkesbury River system and flow into the Pacific Ocean north of Sydney. Seven dam have been constructed over the Southern Coalfield (Fig. 1) and with one large dam further to the west, their stored waters provide the needs of the Cities of Sydney and Wollongong and the surrounding districts. A large part of the area affected by mining is the undeveloped bushland of the associated catchment areas. In general no special precautions have been required with respect to subsidence with the exception of the dam structures and stored waters. With the increase in coal mining activities and the expanding residential development south of the City of Campbelltown in the outer Sydney Metropolitan area, subsidence is becoming an increasingly important area of research. Structures which have been affected or considered are townships and extensive residential areas, buildings of historical importance, major tollways, and a high pressure natural gas pipeline. The subsidence effects of mining beneath natural features within national parks is coming under study as mining approaches these areas. Geological setting The coal seams of the Southern Coalfield lie within the Illawarra Coal Measures. They contain high rank coking coal used in the local steel industry and for export. The Bulli Seam is mined extensively through- out the Southern Coalfield with the lower Wongawilli Seam being second in importance with regard to coal production. The top of the Bulli Seam is taken to be the marker horizon between the Permian Coal Measures

The Sierra Consolidated Mines Co., organized in 1909, owns, together with other holdings, practically all of the productive mineral area in the Ocampo district. Lying within this area are 15 mines, large and small, that hid previously been worked and appear to have yielded, since the discovery of the camp, about 100 years ago, bullion of a total value of over $50,000,000. The deepest mine, the Santa Juliana, had been worked to 1,100 ft. below the outcrop. The reopening of the mines involved, first, extensive and thorough development to open up the known ore shoots at greater depth and explore the ledges for additional shoots, and, second, a revision of existing equipment and methods, so as to increase output and reduce cost of production. This paper will give some account of the metallurgical treatment and a description of the new mill to be built at El Salto. The Ore The ore is practically all argentite, Ag2S, with some associated gold, and carried in a siliceous gangue. The typical ledge matter is an ande-sitic breccia cemented with quartz, or quartz stockwork in andesite.l The proportion by weight of silver to gold averages about 60 to 1. The silver sulphides occur ordinarily in rather fine. dissemination, sometimes not being easily discernible with the naked eye, even in ores of very good grade. The ledges also contain considerable pyrites, which as a rule is barren. "Bronce" is the local term applied to such barren pyrites, and "Pasta" to such as carries values.

Ik presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent, from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel. Physically sound steel, as I would classify it, must be free from blow-holes as well as pipe. The line of demarcation between harmless and harmful blow-holes is exceedingly difficult to define. It is certainly the better and safer practice to eliminate blow-holes from the saleable portion of the ingots and to form a well-defined shrinkage-cavity or pipe at the upper crop-end of ingot. The higher grades of steel are all piping-steels. Is not their superior physical quality due to this fact as well as to their better chemical composition ? Such

In discussing the taxation of mining enterprises, it is desirable to place limits of both time and space on the field of discussion. For our present purposes it seems best to limit consideration to taxation of mining enterprises in the United States, and to further limit the subject to taxation under approximately current conditions. Even with such limitations the field is large enough, since in this country we have, in most regions, a number of taxing powers; so that state, county and village tax systems must ordinarily be considered, in addition to our national or federal taxes. Nor is it possible, in discussing United States mineral taxes of today, altogether to pass by similar taxation in earlier periods, or related systems in other countries. It is perhaps hardly necessary to remind you, at the outset, that each age in the history of the world displays its own system of public revenues, and that the taxation systems of today are everywhere different from those of older times. Theories as to taxation have varied according to the economic basis of the society in which they were formulated, and our ideas as to justice in taxation fluctuate with changes in social conditions. The word taxation is used in a fairly definite sense today, but you have only to glance into the history of taxation to find that the paragenesis of ore deposits is a fairly simple subject as compared to the paragenesis of taxation systems.

WHEN I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in 1916-that is, about 25 years ago-in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature, is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand' truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable, tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. Somewhat later, in introducing a discussion of the phase rule, which "it would be hardly proper to pass ... by without an attempt to outline its meaning," for "a clear exposition of its applicability or jurisdiction is needed to restrain the half¬initiated from misusing it and the uninitiated from being misled by these misuses," he writes-and I quote his statement because we cannot properly discuss the influence of time on a process until we know the state of equilibrium which would ultimately be reached by the system under consideration: It is a most remarkable and valuable generalization, its conceptions help greatly toward getting a broad outlook on metallography, but its misconception has brought out a flood of obscuring writings. It tells us about the constitution towards which alloys tend, that which they reach when equilibrium is complete, when all tendencies have corrected themselves and have been complied with completely. Its application, in absence of true equilibrium, is like determining density with a telescope or even with a tuning fork; it is like the mad tea party at which the butter put into the works of the watch was the best butter. Recent experiments indicate that the usual type of concen-trating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentratiug-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority of this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus marly have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concen-trating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is " bedded," that is, until a suffcient amount of metallic values has been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. On the other hand, the riffles having a very limited carrying-capacity, considerable care must be taken not to overfeed a riffled table, in which case the table proceeds, in mill parlance, to rob itself. In the earlier clays, these ores were treated by chloridizing-roasting followed by amalgamation, with satisfactory results, according to the information now available. Material from old tailing dumps from ore treated by this process, which are found at several places in the vicinity of Oruro, seldom contains more than 5 to 6 oz. of silver per ton. As ore with less than 100 oz. per ton was not treated, the extraction of silver must have been good. Reports of the operating companies published about 1890 asserted that over 90 per cent. of the silver was recovered, but in these calculations, as a rule, no allowance was made for silver lost during roasting and the figure referred only to the extraction of silvcr by amalgamation from the roasted ore.

Introduction The variations in crushing plant design seen during the past 30 years provide a valuable source of information and experience from which one can select the optimum arrangement for a specific requirement. The purpose of this paper is to examine some specific equipment configurations as they relate to operating efficiency, plant availability and final product size in the form of mill feed. Due to the varied ore properties, physical space limitations, size of ore body and financial resources, there is no single crushing or grinding flowsheet that is best. Since energy costs have risen dramatically during the recent past, it became obvious that significant savings are possible by selecting equipment and a circuit which offers low power requirements balanced with low wear metal and installed equipment costs. Relatively clear and measurable are the metal and maintenance costs and the ever increasing cost of energy. Metal costs in the form of crusher liners have not quite doubled in the last 20 years, while power costs have increased by a factor of four or five, depending on the region considered. Estimates made only a few years ago on the increased cost of energy are obsolete in view of the recent unstable conditions. Since power is therefore becoming the largest cost area, it behooves us to investigate potential cost saving methods in the form of lowering the KWH/Ton of crude. Crushing To reduce run-of-mine to mill feed requires reduction in a series of stages. The physical size and power requirements of a crusher capable of reducing hard rock vary depending on the application. Extended experience in most crushing plants show that a minus 19MM (3/4 in.) rod mill feed can be and is being produced in three stages of crushing. In the majority of cases, the last crushing stage is closed circuited using anywhere from 19MM (3/4 in.) to 14MM (9/16 in.) slotted openings on the sizing deck. In some copper concentrators, the mill feed is all passing 13MM (1/2 in.) using three stages of crushing and 14MM (9/16 in.) square openings on the closed circuit screens. It was felt by some that crushing to this fine size is only possible if the ore is friable and is relatively soft in comparison to the harder ores. In brief, this is the story of an attempt to Americanize a process originally developed in Europe. The story will be recited in two sections, the first dealing with the process as developed by the European engineers; the second containing the improvements and modifications of American origin, together with some details of the operating results of the unit as finally assembled. Developments in other directions in this same field have not, up to the present, pointed out an economic future for the process, therefore our record here is largely a report of development progress. Whether some particularly favorable location will be found at some future time for a commercial installation cannot as yet be foretold. The project is now at a standstill. The peculiar tools of the electrometallurgist should be of great interest to the zinc smelter. The low thermal efficiency of the zinc retort, its comparatively small-scale unit and its intermittent cycle as it stood in 1925, should make this art a particularly fertile field for the electric furnace. Yet in spite of years of work recorded in volumes of literature, and an expenditure of large sums of money, there is not a single electrothermic zinc smelter operating anywhere in the world. In this industry the electric furnace plays only a secondary part today. Historical The first serious proposal to use the electric furnace for the smelting of zinc ores was made by the Cowles Brothers in 1885, but their experimental work did not advance the art to any extent. The next investigator of this field was Dr. Gustav DeLaval, a Swedish engineer well known to the industrial world through his development of the centrifugal and the steam turbine. The DeLaval cream separator is a familiar household appliance in most parts of the world. Although Dr. DeLaval commenced his experiments in the field of electric zinc smelting in 1893, it was not until 1898 that he had a practicable furnace, even then operating but intermittently. RiteR, Salt Lake City, Utah.—We have every reason to believe that oil flotation will soon come into general use as a final guard against slime losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, and precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah— the old Eureka Hill property—where ores that were too low in value to warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble. Philbrook (Cairiegie Institute of Technologyogv—Mr. Slatosky has presented an interesting and constructive paper that represents another step along the way of converting steelmaking from an art to a science. I am confident that his computer will be practical and successful and that with a very few months of experience it will provide a significantly better degree of control than his record of 65 pct of heats within range obtained with the slide-rule calculator . A paper such as this, with a lot of symbols and condensed mathematics, is difficult to comprehend quickly. Since I have had an opportunity to study it carefully, perhaps my evaluation of its validity and accomplishments will save time for others. Mr. Slatosky has correctly used standard principles of stoichiometry and heat balances, which are available to anybody, but he has also brought to them two original contributions: 1) He has developed from operating data some empirical relations for predicting the final FeO content of the slag (at 0.5 pct C end-point) as a function of slag basicity, lance height, and scrap, ore, and scale in the charge. This improves the accuracy of prediction of temperature or scrap requirement compared with assuming an arbitrary, constant FeO content at the end of each heat. There is no assurance yet that exactly the same relations will hold for other furnaces or practices, but similar correlations can be expected. 2) He has combined calculations that are ordinarily carried out laboriously as a number of individual steps into a single, simple linear equation that can readily be fed into a machine. This involved a tremendous amount of painstaking detail work as well as the imagination to see the possibility and work out the steps. While his particular Eqs. [3] and [6] are valid only for the furnace design, charge weight, and blowing time used at Aliquippa Works, only a few numerical values have to be changed to adapt it for other conditions. In order to arrive at a useable solution, Mr. Slatosky had to make some basic assumptions about the process that are similar to those used by others. He neglected variation in some process variables and assumed an arbitrary average value for waste gas analysis and temperature for want of more exact information at the present time. All of these judgments are clearly stated. In addition, some thermody-namic data presently available are not adequate for the job, notably in relation to heats of formation and sensible heat in slag, and some expedient has to be adopted to get around the difficulty. Other people might prefer slightly different judgments about these details and hence obtain somewhat different numerical solutions. This is not of serious importance, however, because the errors accumulate in the "heat loss" term and are largely self-compensating for a constant heat time. Although the extended Eq. l(a) in Appendix I was set up as a rate equation originally, for convenience in using an analogue computer as stated in the paper, the time dependence was removed by later mathematical manipulations and assumptions about the process. The final result is an integration of element and energy balances from initial to final states; this procedure is as legitimate here as in any other form of heat-balance calculation. The formal handling of stoichiometry and thermochemistry appears to be correct, and it is assumed that any arithmetical errors would have come to light in applying the calculations to furnace practice. Mr. Slatosky's approach is not necessarily unique, in that other people might start with apparently different equations or prefer another form of final equation for another type of computer. However, he has presented an accomplished result that appears to be a theoretically sound and practically useful way of applying scientific principles and rapid computation for better control of steelmaking. His success will undoubtedly encourage himself and others to improve on the mathematical model and its use as better informatioq becomes available. John F. Elliott (Massachusetts Institute of Teck-t2ology)-The last comment by Mr. Richards that a calculator is quite unnecessary for an L-D operation ?-equi??es a rebuttal. The L-D furnace is a very high capacity process which places a premium on close control. When one is making steel at rates between 100 and 200 tons per hr, one cannot afford the luxury of an extra 5 or 10 min at the end of a heat correcting for an error that should never have been made in the first place. Mr. Slatosky's paper is a very sound application of the simple principles of stoichiometry and the energy balance. It is a satisfactory and valuable start, but only the start of the development of methods of control for this process. An analysis of the process shows that it should be very suitable to control by a computer. This is especially the case when various grades of steel are to be made. In fact, it would seem that the organizations who are planning new and bigger installations of L-D vessels should consider carefully the advantages that would stem from computer control of a vessel with the operator present to do little more

Characteristics of surface deformations i.e., sub¬sidence, inclination, curvature and horizontal strains, are evaluated, based on information obtained by direct field measurements over three longwall panels in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield. Surface deformations have been precomputed using Bals' and Knothe's theories. The results have been compared with Bureau of Mines field data to evaluate the applicability of the two theories to the U.S. min¬ing conditions. Measured horizontal movements and the resulting horizontal strains differ as much as 300 percent from precomputed values. Topography has no detectable effect on vertical movements but appears to have substantial effect on the development of horizontal strains. The horizontal deformations computed from our field measurements generally exceed the limits used in other countries to protect surface structures.

WHEN 60:40 brass is heated to 825° C., given a drastic quench to obtain the beta solid solution, and reheated, various changes take place in the structure. Reheating at 200° C. causes a fine, granular, sorbitic structure to appear which has been considered alpha solid solution. These particles coalesce at higher temperatures of reheating, and at 470° C., the alpha forms twins. A further study of these transformations was considered worth investigating. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The object of the experimental work was to study the effect of mechanical work on rolled 60:40 brass, quenched and reheated, and the mechanism of twinning in the alpha reeds of a furnace-cooled specimen. It was desired to determine the effect of mechanical work on the transformations taking place on reheating the quenched material, both at 200 and at 470° C. A study of the nature of the structure resulting from the breakdown of the beta at 200° C. and a study of the mechanism of twinning above 470° C. were considered problems for investigation. The question of the twinning of the alpha reeds was also an important phase of the work. With high-power magnifications, there was hope of following these processes.

The tremendous interest in development of surface- mineable coal throughout the western US will bring with it a requirement for many manhours spent in mine planning and equipment selection. One problem in particular that engineers face during the planning stage is that of selecting a dragline with the proper reach capability. Reach, expressed in terms of operating radius and effective spoil radius, can be a major problem when mining deeper than originally planned, and aside from production requirements, the ability of a particular dragline to spoil across a strip is essential. Determination of dragline reach needed for a multiple-seam western coal operation can be simplified by use of an equation derived below that eliminates the need for tedious and repetitive calculations.

Plastic deformation of most commercia1 metals within a sufficiently low temperature range results in profound changes in structure and properties, of which the causes and effects are not completely understood. One of these effects is the presence of internal residual stresses and strains, which ordinarily do not appear to require specific consideration in most structural applications but which may be quite undesirable in particular instances. For example, in heavy sections that require considerable machining before assembly, residual stresses may be undesirable because of the distortion they cause when their balance is disturbed by machining or otherwise. In addition, the distribution of stresses may be such that it acts in the same direction as the applied load, thus bringing about premature failure or reducing the load-carrying capacity of the member. One source of residual stress in metal structures is the plastic deformation that may occur during rapid cooling from relatively elevated temperatures, as in the cooling of a casting in the mold or the quenching of a heavy section from elevated temperatures during heat-treatment. These residual stresses are usually undesirable because their direction of operation and magnitude cannot be controlled well enough to permit utilization of the changes in properties of the metal that they may bring about. The most convenient manner of controlling such residual stress is by proper selection of the cooling rate or by reheating to a temperature at which plastic flow can take place, resulting in relief of the residual stresses and strains. Both of these methods of control, however, may cause a reduction in the optimum properties obtainable from the previous operation. A compromise must be struck, and if it is to result in the best possible combinations of properties, specific information must be available regarding the magnitude of the stresses and the rate at which they are affected by variations in cooling rate or in reheating temperature. The complete quantitative estimation of residual stress in complicated metal shapes is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible. In simple sections, however, relatively quantitative analysis may be applied and useful cstimations of stress distribution may be made. This paper is concerned largely with the rate of relief, upon reheating, of internal residual stress in simple aluminum-alloy structures. Since even with simple structures quantitative estimation of residual stresses is laborious and costly, an attempt was made to find other means of collecting data upon which commercial heat-treatments might be based. Incidentally, a few data were collected bearing on the problem of relaxation of aluminum alloys. Determination of Residual Stresses The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses in simple aluminum-alloy shapes rapidly cooled from elevated temperatures has been discussed in a previous paper.'
