To any one acquainted with the practical conditions surrounding the mining engineer and mine-manager, especially in this country, the presentation to the American Institute of Mining Engineers of a paper on the above subject will need no explanation. The members of this profession are continually called upon to design and erect, both above and underground, structures which involve the use of beams. Not to mention the various buildings connected with large mining operations, I need only refer, in support of this statement, to trestles, derricks, headworks, etc., on the surface, and to timbered stations and other spaces of large span in the mine-workings. Notwithstanding the rapidity with which iron and steel are replacing wood in the construction of large buildings, there will always be cases in which the use of metal will be unadvisable. Especially will this be true in districts remote from large cities. Works of temporary character will continue to use timber. High freight-charges, the liability of delays in delivering iron, and the temporary character of many of the structures, will for many years to come make it advantageous for the mines west of the Mississippi and on Lake Superior to construct their buildings almost exclusively of wood. The timber-resources of the country are decreasing so rapidly that already the engineer finds difficulty at times in obtaining beams of large size. This difficulty will steadily increase, and will force the constructor to resort more frequently to built-up beams, such as have long been used in Europe, owing to the difficulty of obtaining there such large sizes of timber as have

Sulphide ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually py-rite or pyrrhotite, or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another ; garnet, am phi-bole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William counties, located on the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodics is the famous " Great Gossan Lead" (13, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Grayson coun-

Bone-ash cupels have been used from time immemorial to absorb litharge, and accompanying oxides, in assaying. Doubtless, also, from the earliest days cupels have been most unjustly blamed for much poor assaying. It has long been known that the precious metals go with the litharge into the cupel. This occasions a loss of precious metals and reduces the results of the assay. There have been many investigations of cupels and the most diverse views have been expressed, the extremes being the statements of Lodge1 that every cupel has some effect upon the loss in assaying telluride ores and of the Campredons2 that coarse and fine and hard and soft cupels all give the same loss of silver when cupelling the same weights. The truth lies between these statements and much nearer the latter. In a vast majority of cases the influence of the cupel is not dominant and is outweighed by other conditions, particularly the temperature of the cupelling bead. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute I presented a paper on the Assay and Valuation of Gold Bullion,3 which recorded the results of many hundreds of assays made in the Mint service under everyday commercial conditions, which of necessity differ from scientific conditions. In following this matter up, for the purpose of increasing the accuracy of our commercial methods of bullion assays, the question of the absorption of gold by the cupel was found to be a most important one and was taken up for investigation. In a lesser degree, the silver absorption is important and interesting, but at resent it appears to be far more complicated and, while many figures showing silver absorption may be found through this paper, much further investigation is required to put the subject upon a satisfactory basis.

THE hardenability of most steels can be predicted within 10 to 15 per cent provided the complete chemical composition is known, including "incidental" elements; and provided the as-quenched grain size is known; and provided, finally, that the composition and heating temperatures for hardening are such as to result in austenite free from carbide particles. In method proposed herein, the steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its carbon content alone (the hardenability of a ''pure steel" of the given carbon content, without any other elements), and this base hardenability is multiplied by a multiplying factor for each chemical element present. After multiplying all these together, the final product is the hardenability. Grain sue may be taken into account either in the base hardenability or after the multiplication. Hardenability is stated in terms of "ideal critical diameter"; namely, the diameter of bar, in inches, that will just harden all the way through (absence of un- hardened core) in an "ideal" quench, and the calculation may also be related to the Jominy test. The data bring out certain features rather clearly. For example: I. It is quite useless to attempt to predict hardenability unless all elements, including "incidentals," are known; thus an "incidental" chromium content of 0.20 per cent increases the hardenability by about 50 per cent. 2. The relative effectiveness of different alloys is sometimes unexpected; thus molybde- num when calculated in this way appears to be of the same order of effectiveness as manganese, rather than much more powerful as wouldappear to be common experience; observe that an increase from no manganese to 0.20 per cent Mn provides a multiplying factor of 1.67, and an increase from no molybdenum to 0.20 per cent Mo provides a factor of 1.63, an increase of over 60 per cent in each case. However, if to a steel containing 0.50 per cent Mn there is added " 20 points of manganese," the factor is raised from 2.65 (for 0.50 per cent Mn) to 3.35 (for 0.70 per cent Mn), or an increase of only 26 per cent. Thus the first small addition of an element has a much more powerful percentage effect than an equal further addition when some is already present, and in most cases the effect of molybdenum is considered in relation to a steel in which molybdenum is absent. 3. If two elements are equally effective, a greater hardenability will be obtained by using, for example, 0.5 per cent of each than by using 1.0 per cent of either of them alone. 4. A knowledge of the as-quenched grain size is essential for precise work, since a difference of only one grain size number (say No. 7 instead of No. 6) makes a difference of almost lo per cent in hardenability (in these units); this, however, does not apply to certain steels of high hardenability. It should be emphasized that in chromium steels (over 0.30 per cent Cr) and chrome- molybdenum and chrome-vanadium steels, undissolved carbides are likely to be present in the steel as quenched, and that in such cases the charts can indicate only a maximum possible hardenability, whereas the extent of hardening actually obtained may be much less. Thus tests on a number of chrome-molybdenum steels have indicated a degree of hardening amounting to only 50 to 65 per cent of the maximum possible, and in chromium steels from full hardening (100 per cent) down to as low as 70 per cent. On the other hand, when the amount of such elements is small (Cr under 0.30 per cent, Mo up to 0.25 per cent in the absence of Cr, and V up to 0.04 per cent), the charts provide reasonable approximations. The precise figures on the charts are suggested as tentative, subject to some modification as more data accumulate, but the fundamental concept appears to be supported by tests made on a wide variety of steels, a few of the correlations being shown in Fig. I.

The reverse martensitic transfomzation (i.e., the conversion of martensite to austenite on heating) was investigated in Fe-Ni alloys containing 30.5 to 33.5 wt pct Ni. The reversed austenite was found to be sufficiently distorted to exhibit marked differences in mechanical properties and to undergo recovery and re crystallization on further heating. In particular, the yield strength of the reversed austenite was as much as 2.5 times higher than that of the virgin austenite: with five cycles of the direct and reverse martensitic transformation, the yield strength was 2.6 times higher. There was an accompanying decrease in strain-hardening capacity and in stable ductility or uniform elongation. The recrystallization was observed to follow sigmoidal kinetics, but was characterized by an abnormal1y large temperature dependence which was evidently due to carbon segregation at the migrating grain boundaries. Upon recrystallization, the strength Properties reverted to those of the virgin austenite, but the ductility did not fully recover until the annealing temperature was further raised to dissipate the carbon segregation at the grain boundaries. The transformation of reversed austenite to produce second-generation martensite resulted in an unusually imperfect structure, thereby leaditg to additional strengthening. Horlleuer, the martensitic phase was much less responsive in this respect than was the austenite. MOST martensitic transformations are capable of undergoing a reverse transformation back to the austenitic phase on heating.&apos; This reaction, like the direct transformation to martensite on cooling, is usually athermal. In analogy with the Ms andMf temperatures for the martensitic transformation (where M, > Mf), the reverse transformation is characterized by the As andAf temperatures (where As<Af). It is well-known that the finish (Af) of the martensite-to-austenite reaction on heating may occur at a temperature where austenite is not stable relative to other phases in the equilibrium diagram.&apos; Reverse martensitic transformations have been found to influence the properties of the parent austenitic phase in a number of ferrous alloys. The austenite thus produced after one or more reversals is significantly altered in strength, microstruc-ture, diffusivity, and annealing characteristics compared to well-annealed, virgin austenite. The first detailed observations of such phenomena were made by Wasserman3 on an Fe-30 wt pct alloy. He found that the reversed austenite (i.e., austenite formed by the reverse martensitic transformation) was much stronger than the original austenite, and the second-generation martensite (i.e., martensite produced from the reversed austenite) was somewhat stronger than the first-generation martensite. On heating the reversed austenite, recrystallization occurred in a manner similar to that of a cold-worked metal; the Laue spots sharpened and the strength decreased.4 In recent years, Russian workers have shown considerable interest in these reverse martensitic transformations. Most of such investigations5-10 have been concerned with the stabilization of reversed austenite relative to subsequent martensitic transformation, and because of its unusual nature, this phenomenon will be discussed in detail elsewhere." On the other hand, the annealing behavior of reversed austenite and the attendant variation in properties have received little attention beyond the experiments of Wasserman.3,4 Gridnev eta1.,8 in one of the few such studies. followed the hardness change of reversed austenite as a function of time at three annealing temperatures. The marked strengthening of austenite achieved by the reverse martensitic transformation has been referred to as "transformation strengthening" by Wasserman3,4 and as "phase hardening" by Malyshev et a1.7,9,10 to differentiate it from hardening produced by cold working. Both groups of investigators noted that further strengthening of the austenite could be attained by repeated or cyclic transformations, but the first cycle resulted in the most pronounced effect. Evidence of the altered microstructure of reversed austenite has been reported by Maximova and Nikonorova6 and by Edmonson and KO.12 The former found that reversed austenite was much more sensitive to etching than the original austenite, and the latter authors observed a (&apos;ghost" structure resembling martensite in certain areas of the reversed austenite. The effect of temperature, impurities, and capillarity on the morphology of solid particles in a liquid matrix is investigated. For the NbC-liquid iron system, at least, it is found that those particles which are dissolving will assume a spherical shape; all others will take the equilibrium shape. An aniso-tropic-isotropic transition in the interfacial tension is observed at about 1725°C and is believed to be due to cooperative roughening of the interface on an atomic scale. The presence of boron as an impurity lowers the transition temperature. It is the purpose of this paper to present some observations on the shape of particles in a system consisting of solid particles of nonuniform size in a liquid matrix and to propose an explanation for these observations. Although qualitative only, these observations, which were made largely in the course of a study of particle-growth kinetics,&apos; are presented separately to draw attention to them. They reveal the effect of particle size, temperature, and surface-active impurities on particle shape in the solid NbC-liquid iron system, and are unique in demonstrating for the first time the reversible effect of temperature and impurity concentration on the anisotropy of the energy of the solid-liquid interfaces involved. Some of the changes are readily demonstrated with the few particles whose shapes can be clearly shown in a single photomicrograph, but others are more subtle, and their recognition depends upon some experience and the study of a much larger sample. For this reason, a certain amount of judgment must be acknowledged to underlie their detection, but every effort was made to maintain proper scientific objectivity in evaluating the observations. The observations will be presented first, and then an explanation rationalizing them will be offered. Brief reminders of the relevant theories will be inserted into the discussion at the appropriate points. EXPERIMENTAL The observations were made of the shape of NbC particles dispersed in liquid iron. All specimens were prepared by pressing NbC powder and car- bony1 iron powder treated according to standard powder-metallurgical procedures. Except as noted, all specimens were heated to 1900°C for 1/2 hr. In investigating the effect of temperature, specimens were quenched from 1900°C to various lower temperatures, and held long enough (48 hr) to allow shape changes to be completed. Boron, in the form of amorphous powder, and oxygen, in the form of niobium oxide powder, were added as impurities to some specimens. Nitrogen was introduced into some specimens as an impurity by heat treating the samples under a partial pressure of nitrogen gas. Effect of Temperature. It was first observed that increasing temperature had a marked effect in rounding the corners and edges of the particles. At 1900°C the particles are all very nearly spherical and remain so even when the holding time is extended to 48 hr. As can be seen from Fig. 1, there is virtually no evidence of the presence of low-index planes. At 1300°C, however, most of the particles are prismatic with very slightly rounded edges and corners, Fig. 2. (In making these shape comparisons, attention should be focused on the larger particles, even though the smaller ones would be expected to be the first to change shape, owing to the shorter diffusion distances involved. Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter (LID) ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23% of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with LID ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests, a radial prestress of 3000 or 5000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3000 psi prestress, was 54.3% for limestone, 40.3% for marble, 44.7% for sandstone, and 23.4% for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5000 psi prestress, was 74.2% for limestone, 51.2% for marble, 61.6% for sandstone, and 29.7% for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room-and-pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent. One important objective of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the rational design of mining systems. In the design of room-and-pillar mining operations, pillar strength is a fundamental variable. It is customary to estimate this strength from uniaxial compression tests of rock samples and to correct this value for the length-to-diameter (LID) ratio of the in-situ pillar. This method of estimating pillar strength corrects for pillar shape but does not consider the effect of a large horizontal in-situ stress field that sometimes exists in underground formations. The purpose of the work covered in this report was to determine to what extent the compressive strengths of model pillars of relatively brittle rock loaded in axial compression were affected by lateral end constraint. In previous work, Obert l used solid steel rings bonded to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens to study the creep behavior of three quasi-plastic rocks -salt, trona, and potash ore - during a test period of 1000 hr. These rings provided radial constraint during the loading cycle of 20 to 50% of the axial stress for specimens with LID ratios of 2, 0.5, and 0.25. He concluded that (1) "for a quasi-plastic material the end constraint strongly affects the specimen strength, and (2) as D/L increases (length-to-diameter decreases), the specimens lose their brittle characteristics and tend to flow rather than fracture." He also concluded that model pillars constrained by rings were better for use in predicting the strength of mine pillars than either cylindrical or prismatic specimens. This conclusion appears to be valid where mine pillars, roof, and floor are a single structural element. In the present study, 460 specimens of four relatively brittle rocks — limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite - were tested to failure. The study consisted of two parts: (1) the effect on the compressive strength of end constraint produced during the axial loading cycle by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of the specimens, and (2) the effect on the compressive strength of increased end constraint produced in part by a prestress applied prior to axial loading and in part by lateral expansion of the specimen during the loading cycle. The first part of this study was reported in some detail earlier.2 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND EQUIPMENT Model rock pillars of the sizes and shapes shown in Fig. 1 were broken in axial compression when the ends were constrained as shown in Fig. 2. he straight specimens were broken without ring constraint. The results are presented of a study of the application of analytical methods to the solution of two-phase flow into single wells. Approximate analytical expressions for the pressure distribution in two-phase flow are found ;;; a number of conditions. The results obtained from the analytical solutions me found to be in good agreement with results obtained by finite difference techniques using a high speed digital computer. Mathematical solutions for four sets of boundary conditions are presented. All of these solutions are composed of a short-term transient plus a steady or quasi-steady state. The rates of decay of the short-lived transients are analyzed. It is found that the durations of the short-term transients may be characterized by a parameter defined as the time constant which can be determined from simple relations. It is shown also that if the outer radius is much greater than the radius of the well. the short term transients decay at rates which are proportional to the square of the exterior radius, and the rates of decay are only slightly dependent upon the radius ratio. Numerical solutions based on finite difference techniques are presented for a number of conditions. The numerical solutions are in good agreement with the predictions based on the theoretical analysis for small and moderate drawdowns. Examples involving large drawdowns indicate that the nonlinearities in the equations of flow do not appreciably alter the longevity of the short-term transients. In all cases the time required for the short-tern transients to disappear is predicted satisfactorily. INTRODUCTION The mechanism by which oil and gas flow into a single well is of vital interest to the petroleum industry. The fundamental equations of two-phase flow which describe this mechanism are nonlinear partial differential equations. Numerical solutions of these equations describing pressure transients have been obtained with the aid of electronic computers. Although solutions obtained in this manner take into account a large number of effects, the reduction of this information to useful generalities is difficult. One method of obtaining generalities is the use of linearized approximations of the nonlinear equations. Since it is possible to obtain explicit solutions of the linearized equation, general properties of the role of pressure in the flow mechanism may be ascertained. Results obtained from this approach are limited to some extent by the linearizing assumptions. The severity of these limitations may be evaluated by comparing solutions of the linear equation with numerical solutions of the more exact nonlinear equations of two-phase flow. In the past considerable amount of work has been devoted to studying pressure build-up using the single-phase flow theory. Unfortunate1y, most prep sure build-up tests involve multiphase flow. A small amount of work has been done studying pressure build-up where the flow is two-phase. The encouraging results of these studies suggest that useful results may be found from additional studies of not only pressure build-up, but also the rapid transients associated with placing a well on production. This paper presents the basic theory of the pressure transients associated with placing a well on production and with closing it in. The paper is concerned chiefly with two-phase compressible flow; however, the results also apply to single-phase flow. The results are based on analytical solutions of the flow equations, and they are verified by numerical solutions using finite difference techniques. Much of the previous work on compressible flow into wells has been confined to single-phase flow. Some work has been done on compressible two-phase steady state flow, and solutions of the equations of flow have been found by finite difference techniques using high-speed computers. Muskat1 presents some rather general solutions to the equations of single-phase compressible flow into wells. Much work has been done on pressure build-up in wells (see, for example, Refs. 2-6). Almost all of the work on pressure build-up concerns single-phase flow with the exception of Ref. 5 and part of Ref. 2. Some work has been done on pressure fall-off in injection wells.718 Muskat9 presents the solution of the equations for radial steady state two-phase compressible flow. The paper presents correlations of (l) molar volume of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures with pressure, temperature, composition and properties of the C,-plus fraction; (2) shrinkage of oils during flash and differential liberation of gas, including the calculation of formation volume factor under various conditions; and (3) bubble-point pressure with temperature, composition and characteristics of C, plus. The data on which the correlations are based comprise 1,615 measurements on 900 hydrocarbon systems, including numerous systems containing nitrogen, hydrogen sul-fide and carbon dioxide. In each correlation, the number of data points covered and the accuracy is substantially greater than in previously available work. Thus, the equation yielding molar volumes of gases has an average deviation of 2.04 per cent, applied to mixtures having temperatures up to 313F and pressures up to 9,800 psis, compared to 2.37 per cent for the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation applied to the same data, and 4.53 per cent for the method based on the law of corresponding states. he equations resented are all explicit in the dependent variable, and require no iteration on the digital cow puter. INTRODUCTION The ease and accuracy of determining the composition of hydrocarbon mixtures, compared to the difficulty of measuring their properties under reservoir conditions, makes it desirable to utilize composition as the key to physical behavior to the greatest possible extent. As a result, there are available correlations between composition, or easily measured characteristics dependent on composition, and practically every important engineering property of reservoir fluids. The task confronting us is one of finding more exact relationships between important variables rather than extending correlations to new properties. This paper describes new correlations of molar volumes of gases, formation volume factors, and bubble-point pressures with composition, temperature and where possible, pressure. Each correlation is obtained by employing a sufficiently large amount of data so the calculated properties are probably as least as accurate as the measurement on which they are based. MOLAR VOLUME OF GASES Although many equations of state have been proposed for pure gases, only a few methods are applicable to hydrocarbons at conditions comparable to those in petroleum reservoirs. Still fewer arc useful in describing the behavior of mixtures, with which the petroleum engineer is largely concerned. The correlation presented here involves procedures similar to those of Alani and Kennedy The van der Waals equation is modified to make a and b functions of temperature instead of being constants for each material.This is a cubic equation, which may have either one or three real roots. The lowest root corresponds to liquid volume, while the highest applies to gas. When the procedure was applied to 703 pressure-temperature points of 164 gases of known composition and volume, the average deviation was 12.08 per cent, and the standard deviation 8.15. The above calculations were made using the constants derived for liquids by Alani and Kennedy and the mixture equation developed by them. A closer approximation to measured molar volumes is obtained by employing different sets of constants for different areas on the pressure-temperature chart, and by changing the relationship between a,,, and b,,, for mixtures and the a, and b, for individual hydrocarbons. The various sets are shown in Table 1, and the areas for which they are recommended are plotted in Figs. 1 through 7. In these figures, the area designated by zero is in the critical region for pure materials, and the values obtained for them may be unreliable. For normal mixtures, however, the area may be added to any of the bounding areas without substantial error. The new relationships employed are

Mulga tree and salt bush, silvery under the sun, hug the ground too close to make welcome shade. To the east a wrinkle on the empty plain marks the line of lode, the Broken Hill bonanza. Strangely, the outback stops at a cyclone fence close by the ridge. Beyond, the peculiar island continent vegetation flourishes with the same frosty patina of the mulga and the salt bush. A city of 30,000 people is hidden behind the screen of vegetation. Once, the city was ugly and the people miserable from marching, flying sand. Now with a protective screen of vegetation, it is an oasis in the outback. The secret of the oasis is the fence. All regeneration plans failed until it was built to keep kangaroo, rabbit, sheep and man from destroying the plantations.

IT has been customary at our opening sessions, for the presiding officer to address you on the general development of one or another of our several professions, or upon some important feature of Mining or Metallurgical Engineering. It is somewhat embarrassing to his successor that our former President, Dr. Raymond, expert as he is in every one of these professions, has been accustomed to keep them all, in their turn, prominently before you. In selecting for this occasion a subject necessarily connected with iron and steel, I have thought that a review of these manufactures, with reference to some of their more pressing needs for improvement, will be more timely than a general or statistical paper. I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to a few specific defects of practice and management, and to their equally specific and more or less developed remedies. That serious defects exist ; that they must be remedied ; that the manufacture is indeed already on the verge of transition, will be generally admitted. But it cannot be revolutionized all at once, however desirable the technical results might be, for that would bankrupt the business at large. We cannot afford to pull down and rebuild all our blast-furnaces that do not make a ton of pig iron with 25 cwt. of fuel ; nor to replace all our hand-puddling furnaces with revolving ones, even if we could select the best revolver. Although the soft steels promise to supplant iron for most structural purposes, there are neither money nor present market to warrant all at once replacing our iron works, or half of them, with steel works. Since, then, these manufactures can neither standstill nor be suddenly metamorphosed, their managers are saying to one another " We must feel our way into larger development ; we must work gradually into better practice; we must improve a little at a time." * President&apos;s address on the opening of the Cleveland meeting.

AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal. ribs and movement of the roof and pavement. Output from the three operating mines in the Cumberland field is 3000 tpd. The field is highly inclined, inclination varying from 12° to 32°. Overlying beds consist of shales and massive sandstone lenses of extreme toughness and are responsible for bumps when the stresses are relieved by extraction. At greatest depth these are among the deepest coal workings in the world. Depth of cover ranges from 2300 to 4000 ft. This prohibits room-and-pillar working and necessitates longwall operation. Working of contiguous seams concurrently to maintain output increases the already difficult conditions. The Sydney field, with a frontage of about 30 miles, is the most important of the Nova Scotia coal fields. With the exception of one small area it is now wholly submarine. Output is approximately 21,000 tpd. Seams are 21/2 to 8 ft thick, and cover in the areas varies from 600 to 2300 ft, with an average of 1500 ft from sea bottom to the top of the seam. The seams dip in a seaward direction, pitches ranging from 6" to 4.0". The shoreline is the last place of entry to the seams and distance from the bank to the working faces is generally over 3½ miles, in some cases as much as 6½ miles. Ventilation is a problem and requires the construction of large permanent airways. Getting and Loading Coal: In 1925, in view of heavy pressures exerted by thickness of cover overlying the seams, roadways and pillars of the room-and-pillar system being worked began to break up and coal was lost. It was decided that a change in the method of extraction in areas with heavy cover was necessary, and experiments were made with many short walls and longwalls varying between 90 and 250 ft. Trial and error proved that the best operating length was between 400 and 500 ft, delivering all coal to the dip, with roadways to the face following a level course. The change-over was gradual, and the technique of roof control developed with the system, so that falls to the face are now very infrequent. An advantage of longwall mining is that it yields 95 pct extraction, especially important in coal seams of high quality or in seams where faults or disturbances restrict the workable areas. This percentage of extraction is based on the fact that the longwall advancing system takes development faces where pitch permits instead of driving headings and leaving roadway pillars. This system yields high tonnage during development and limits loss in extraction to duff left during operations. Accompanying disadvantages, on the other hand, are the heavy construction cost of main roadways and the necessity of driving all new flank face roadways through the gob. If the main roadways are driven through the solid, and large enough pillars are left on each side for protection against flank face weights, then the width of solid coal is approximately 1700 ft. This represents 10.6 pct of the coal available, or 89.4 pct extraction of the whole. These pillars, however, are of such size that they provide a useful pillar drawing area as a final operation of the mine. The vacuum filter operating variables that influence cake moisture are discussed. The influence of temperature control, particularly through application of steam to the cake, is emphasized. Results of pilot plant studies on filtration of fine hematite concentrates are presented and discussed, and are shown to support the theoretically-derived conclusions. Results on fine magnetite concentrates are also used to support the argument. The relative merits of disc and drum filters from the standpoint of cake moisture are discussed. Moisture content has always been recognized as one of the most important properties of concentrates used as pellet plant feed. Most iron ore concentrates are produced by wet methods, and are finally de-watered on filters. Obviously, a real economic advantage accrues to the ability of control the moisture content of the filter cake within the range required for optimum pellet production. Another consideration, also, has been receiving increasing attention recently. Transoceanic shippers of concentrate cargoes are critically assessing the hazards of excess moisture. The nature and magnitude of these risks have been described, &apos; and it appears that their elimination may require that residual moisture be somewhat lower than the limit for proper pelletization. Coarse, very free-filtering materials, such as the products of spirals, are usually best handled on top-feed types of machines. The moisture content of the cake may be held at a specified value by proper design and operation, taking into account cake thickness, air-flow rate, and drainage time. Fine-grained concentrates, with which we will be concerned here, must be filtered on Drum or Agidisc machines. With many of these materials, it is possible, by proper design, to meet cake moisture requirements with a conventional filter station. The first installations to produce high-grade pellets from magnetic taconites fell in this class. In fact, the design criteria were developed in connection with operations of Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, inn.,2 and these have been verified repeatedly in other mills. The trend today, however, is toward the production of more difficultly dewatered concentrates. This is due on the one hand to the increasing attention being given to non-magnetic ores, which tend to be far slimier, and therefore much more retentive of moisture, than the magnetites. On the other hand, the pressure to improve the grade of the magnetic ores is leading to finer grinds, which also are more difficult to dewater. In the latter case, the decision to improve grade in an existing operation by finer grinding for better liberation may lead to two unattractive alternatives: 1) substantially higher bentonite consumption, plus the risk of poorer quality pellets, from high cake moisture, or 2) installation of a thermal dryer. There is, however, a third alternative. In recent papers by two of the authors3,4 it was shown that for many materials a significant decrease in cake moisture can be obtained by applying live steam to the cake face during the drying part of the filter cycle. Further, this limited drying appears to have distinct economic advantages compared to thermal drying. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the third alternative. To do this, the results of an extensive pilot study of steam filtration of a hematite flotation concentrate will be critically examined. This study was sufficiently broad so that a number of alternate suggestions (besides steaming the cake) for reducing moisture content were tested, and comparative data for both Drum and Disc filters were obtained. The work was particularly interesting since the concentrate has a high Blaine surface, and is therefore particularly difficult to dewater to the levels required. FILTER CAKE MOISTURE The significant difference between concentrate filter cake as discharged from the filter, a cargo of that same filter cake during or after shipment, and a green ball formed from that filter cake is in the relative volume of voids, or porosity. IN a previous series of papers, the results of studies made on various types of high purity base titanium alloys were presented. Included in this work were the Ti-Mn&apos; and Ti-Cu&apos; alloys, representative of sluggish and active eutectoid systems, respectively. The present paper gives the results of a simi- lar study made on Ti-Mo alloys as an example of a ß-isomorphous alloy system. Experimental Procedures Alloy Preparation—Six ½-lb ingots were prepared from iodide titanium and high purity molybdenum stock. The ingots were arc melted in a water-cooled copper crucible under an argon atmosphere. Each ingot was melted at least twice to insure homogeneity and complete solution of the molybdenum. This was done by inverting the ingot in the crucible and remelting completely.

INTRODUCTION Where and how to spend the exploration dollar to net the greatest economic return, has always been a major problem for mining companies. Minerals are being consumed in ever increasing quantitie: throughout the world and the mining industry is being called on to meet this demand. In view of the present world-wide nationalistic trend, it is becoming more difficult to determine where exploration money can be spent most profitably. An exploration project should be evaluated continually--in the beginning, to define economic targets and later to determine, as early as possible, whether a project has a chance of developing into a venture that will make a profit acceptable to top management. At this point, a decision can be made whether or not to proceed with plans to bring in a new mine. Exploration, evaluation, and development, therefore, must be fully integrated in transforming an exploration project into a profitable mining venture. DEMAND FOR LEAD AND ZINC Lead and zinc are metals basic to our economy and the demand for them will continue to rise as the population in the world increases. If the population continues to grow at the present rate, it will about double by the year 2000. The accelerating demand for these metals is shown by statistics. Nearly half as much lead (48%) and more than half as much zinc (55%) have been mined between the two world wars as in all pre- ceding history. (1)

THE subcommittee on Coal Mining, since its appointment, has been engaged in collecting data about subsidences in coal mines in this country, and it now feels that almost all of the available data about occurrences of this sort in bituminous mines has been collected. As most of the bituminous seams are nearly level, the records obtained give the problem in its simplest form, without complications due to the pitch of the seam. Similar data is being compiled for the anthracite regions and it is hoped that this will be ready for the 1927 meeting. Copies of the questionnaire, Appendix A, were mailed to all of the coal operators&apos; associations, to most of the large operating companies and to many engineers, with the request that any data on the subject be returned to the committee, or that advice of any subsidences known be given. The replies to most of the questionnaires were general only, although some specific cases were given. Many of the companies were unable to reply to all questions, as they lacked the necessary data, but in nearly every case where accurate data was available, it was cheerfully furnished, and any additional information requested was secured. All specific cases of subsidence were followed up by correspondence, and in several cases by personal inspection. Figs. 1 to 31 were made from the information furnished. Table 1 gives measurements of elevations taken in one case at intervals from October, 1913, to May, 1918. With one exception, where the evidence cannot yet be released on account of a lawsuit, it is believed that the cases submitted with this report include practically all that have happened in bituminous coal mining in this country of which actual measurements were secured. Some of these have already been published in the excellent report by Young and Stoek,1 and some instances have been secured from other publications. In collecting these data, the subcommittee had the Engineering Societies Library extend the bibliography given in the bulletin mentioned above to date. This list is given in Appendix B.

SOAPS have been used as collectors for many years, but only in the last eight years have other long-chain paraffin salts been used. It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xanthates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present eminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies.[t] A broad, semi quantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. THE PARAFFIN CHAIN SALTS The basic requirements for a "collector" in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polarnonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2) „X where X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -CO2Na, -SO3Na, -SO4Na, - PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the
