Producers of alloy steels recognize the importance of chemical composition in relation to the hot-working properties and the typical surface defects found in their product. Each analysis of steel has its own peculiar characteristics. Under conditions of standard mill practice each analysis is susceptible to certain types of defects. Mill practice must be varied to obtain the best combination of surface and internal quality in the product. Chemical composition influences the cast structure and crystallization characteristics of the ingot. It also determines the rate of heating and cooling, the plastic hot-working range, and the phase structure of the steel at various temperatures. as well as the tendency toward scale formation and decarburization. This paper endeavors to emphasize the manner in which chemical composition affects the various properties of steel, and to indicate the relative importance of these factors in relation to the hot-working properties and surface characteristics of killed steel. The influence of chemical composition may be outlined as follows: I. Effect on the cast structure of steel, including: A. State of deoxidation, and type of inclusions. B. Gas content of steel. C. Freezing point and melting point of steel. D. Crystallization characteristics and segregation. 11. Effect on the hot-working properties and surface characteristics of steel, including: A. Plastic hot-working range. B. Phase structures at hot-working temperatures. C. Rate of heating. D. Cooling characteristics. E. Scale formation. F. Surface decarburization. EFferect of Chemical Composition on Cast Structure of Steel State of Deoxidation and Type of Inclu-sions.—The state of deoxidation is limited by the final chemical analysis desired in the finished product, and is controlled primarily by carbon, manganese, silicon, and aluminum, and to a lesser degree by chromium, titanium, vanadium, or other deoxidizing elements. The degree of deoxidation affects the density of the cast structure and broadly classifies the steel as killed, semikilled, or rimming. This in turn manifests itself in surface characteristics. The manner and extent of deoxidation also controls the amount, type, and distribution of nonmetallic inclusions formed. The equilibrium of manganese, silicon and aluminum with the slags and pouring refractories with which the metal comes in contact is important, especially in regard to inclusions of fire-clay origin. Some surface Seams and hot-working difficulties can be traced to nonmetallic inclusions.

INTRODUCTION This chapter is a continuation of the studies by Rustan and Stockel (1979, 1980) on techniques for automating ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The studies have been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. As a result of the studies it has been recommended that a good solution to diesel exhaust emission would be automatic, step by step control of the fans near the working place. Diesel vehicles are the major polluters underground in the mines. Therefore, we have suggested that diesel vehicles regulate the fans The goal of the continued study has been to find a way for active diesel vehicles to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. The best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that change of temperature is an inexpensive and effective way to start and stop crosscut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for starting and stopping gallery fans . This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå, Divisions of Electronics and of Mining and Rock Excavation. An advisory group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives of the local mine workers' unions, and authorities from the local offices of Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna was studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air above ground is heated in winter by hot water and the main fans push the air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide ore body. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both the intake and return sides, Fig. 1.

The application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government rccords, 30 Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the railway at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 31/2-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 1936, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, commercial firms photographed 16,291 square miles during 1935, while the Government compiled from aerial photographs by the Geological Survey in the United States 85,544 square miles. It was found that information could be determined in a fraction of the time required by surface methods. However, sounding a word of caution, a Commonwealth of Australia government report on aerial survey operations had this to say: It is necessary to repeat ad nauseam that aerial photographic survey is in no sense a substitute for geological investigation, though it is a very valuable adjunct thereto, and greatly facilitates and aceeleratcs geological mapping. A study of the mechanical properties of the alloys of copper and silver led to the discovery that the solubility of silver in copper was greatly different from that generally supposed, therefore some work was done to determine the solubility with greater accuracy than had previously been achieved. After the work had been completed, two papers were published' giving solubility figures which agreed closely with one another and with the work described herein. A detailed comparison of that work with the present will be given later. Preparation of Allots The copper used in making the alloys was electrolytic ingot of high purity. The silver was prepared by precipitation as chloride from nitric acid solution, followed by fusion of the washed precipitate with sodium carbonate and potassium nitrate. This method gives metal containing at least 99.99 per cent silver. The copper was first melted under charcoal in a small electric resistance furnace and the silver added as pure silver, it being unnecessary to make any intermediate alloys. After thorough stirring the metal was poured into a mold of suitable form. The alloys contained between 0.008 and 0.015 per cent of oxygen. Small amounts of oxide were visible under the microscope, but it is not believed this would have much effect on the results. Copper-silver alloys are notorious for segregation, consequently a few experiments were carried out to find a form of casting with as little segregation as possible. A mold 6 in. long and 1/2-in. dia. was first used, and an alloy nominally containing 5 per cent silver was cast in it, while some of the same alloy was poured directly into water to obtain the maximum rate of cooling possible. THE demands of the petroleum and chemical industries for steels to be used in pressure vessels and similar structures at artificially low tempera-tures are continually increasing, and the writing of proper specifications with suitable tests becomes increasingly important. Likewise, the selec-tion of suitable steels for such applications is of increasing concern to the metallurgist. It is generally recognized that highly alloyed steels of the austenitic stainless type retain their properties even at very low tempera-tures and represent the best technological solution of the low-temperature steel problem. However, in many instances less expensive carbon or low-alloy steels suitable for service within limited temperature ranges are available. The problem thus becomes one of defining the various factors involved in the production and fabrication of these less expensive steels and determining the temperature ranges in which their properties justify engineering application. Most of the applications involve welded structures, and the heat effect of welding as well as the nature of the weld metal are matters of prime concern. The first problem that the metallurgist faces is the determination of the type of test to be used as a criterion of the performance of the steel in low-temperature service. It has been generally recognized that the static properties of steel as determined in the ordinary tensile test undergo a gradual and relatively slight change as the temperature of test is lowered in the range of current interest; i.e., from room temperature to minus 120° C. It is further generally recognized that the behavior of steel under impact involving notch sensitivity is definitely affected at the lower temperatures. While the major subject of this paper is the effect of grain-refining deoxidizers, of low-alloy additions and of welding on the low-temperature notched-bar impact properties, an inquiry into the general behavior of steel under low-temperature impact testing is included. The investigations described were made on a portion of Clear Creek basin near Golden, Colo. (-4 portion of the area under survey is shown in Fig. 1. The photograph was taken in the vicinity of station No. 2 of Line 11.) Three principal purposes were in the minds of the investigators: 1. To repeat with modern, more sensitive and more reliable instruments magnetometric placer investigations previously made. 2. To disprove the recently advanced theory that deposits of the glacial period have no pronounced magnetic effects. 3. To develop in detail the theory of the magnetic effects produced by placer deposits. Six years ago, the first magnetic observations were published, which proved that it is possible to locate gold-bearing channels with relatively crude instruments.' Two years ago, K. C. Laylander published results obtained with similar instruments.2 The measurements of the latter were discussed by the senior author of this paper.3 At that time, however, the material available for such a discussion was somewhat scarce and not made with the most modern magnetic instruments, although very brilliant results were obtained. Therefore, the senior author felt that magnetic investigations should be made on very clear geologic conditions with the most modern instruments. Comparison of Magnetometers The junior author undertook this work in the spring of 1928. The magnetic field balances, for vertical and horizontal intensities, designed by Schmidt were used (Figs. 2 and 3). The scale value of these instruments was approximately 257 and 157, respectively. The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media leads to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. In this paper a stable numerical procedure is developed for solving the equation for production of gas at constant rate from linear and radial systems. An electronic digital computer is used to perform the numerical integration using an implicit form of an approximating difference equation. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimension-less parameters. The solutions are compared with the laboratory study of gas depletion in a linear system. INTRODUCTION Production of fluids from porous rock reservoirs is essentially a transient process. Transient gradients develop as soon as production begins, and further withdrawals continue to cause disturbances which propagate throughout the reservoir, each adding in some way to the prior ones. A correct mathematical analysis of this behavior is complicated by the fact that the transient or unsteady-state flow of compressible fluids must be described by difficult second-order partial differential equations. As a practical matter, three distinctly different cases arise: 1. Flow of single-phase liquid 2. Flow of gases 3. Multiphase flow The first of these has been found to give a linear second-order equation similar to the well-known heat flow equation. where 7 is fluid density, 8 is time, and a a constant for the system, provided d 7 = r cdp, where the compressibility, c, is constant over the range of pressure, p, considered. Solutions of Equation (1) for both linear and radial flow are available in several forms.2'3' On the other hand. the second case, which is the flow of gas, gives a non-linear second-order equation, the solution of which is not known. Although a number of approximate solutions have been proposed, each is limited in value by the associated simplifying assumptions. Inasmuch as the analysis of transient flow is limited to liquid systems, a solution of the second case is necessary if further progress is to be made in studying underground fluid movement. For this reason a solution of Equation (2) was undertaken by means of numerical integration of approximating difference equations. BASIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION Equation (2; is derived by combining the equation of continuity, the perfect gas law, and Darcy's law to give the basic differential equation Strictly speaking, the fluids present in a gas reservoir are not perfect gases. Furthermore, there are indications that over certain velocity ranges, Darcy's law is not applicable. It would not be practicable. however, to attempt to obtain numerical solutions which would take into account all the possible variations from these laws which could occur in actual systems. The

MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory state of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which are useful for predicting machine performance and give, acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary in commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed' in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted. In its first form, as stated by P. R. Rittinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include .the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin2 as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended. According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps, 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported' that support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in. different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work" done on. the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is relatively harder to grind at the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory' is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. Where F represents the diameter of the feed particles and P is the diameter of the product particles, the reduction ratio Rr is F/P, and according to Kick the work input required for reduction to different sizes is proportional to log Rr/log 2.5 The Kick theory is mathematically more tenable than the Rittinger when cubes under compression are considered, but it obviously fails to assign a sufficient proportion of the total work in. reduction to the production of fine particles. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-1.5 If a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The'evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of 200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of -200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. This paper is concerned primarily with the development, proof, and application of a new Third Theory, which should eliminate the objections to the two old theories and serve as a practical unifying principle for comminution in all size ranges. Both of the old theories have been remarkably barren of practical results when applied to actual crushing and grinding installations. The need for a new satisfactory theory is more acute than those not directly concerned, with crushing and grinding calculations can realize. The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h'k'l') resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h'k'l'), and that (h'k'l') need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h'k'l') to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h'k'l')— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). THE first authentic description of an iron bath for the deposition of iron is probably that of Bottger in 1846, who used a bath containing ferrous sulfate and ammonium chloride. In 1861, Kramer deposited iron from ferrous chloride solution. Electrolytic iron was produced in 1.869 by Bietz, who used it for making some magnetic tests. In the same year, Klein is said to have worked out his process. Jacobi1 in 1869 described the results obtained in electroplating with iron on copper for making dies and plates for bank notes, by Klein's process. A letter from Klein to Jacobi describes the bath more fully. It consisted of FeSO4 + (NH4)2S04. Lenz2 described ?some properties of electrolytically precipitated iron. He used Klein's bath, FeSO4 + MgSO4 + MgCO3, to neutralize and obtained fine-grained and hard iron. His conclusions were as follows: 1. Electrolytic iron and copper contain gases, notably hydrogen. 2. The volume of gas absorbed by iron varies within wide limits, but it is easy for iron to take up very considerable quantities of gas. 3. The absorption of gas is principally in the first formed layers of iron. 4. When iron is heated, gas begins to come off below 100°, principally hydrogen. 5. Heated to redness, reduced iron oxidizes in water, in part at least at the expense of the oxygen of the water, decomposing it and setting free hydrogen, which is partly or wholly absorbed. Siemens,3 in 1889, was the first to propose a general process embodying a step for leaching a sulfide mineral with ferric chloride or sulfate and a step for regenerating the leach and depositing iron on a cathode in a diaphragm cell. The effect of cathodically charging zone-refined iron with hydrogen and the resultant yield stress-grain size relationship has been investigated by tensile testing at -31°C. The resulting Petch plots (using a least-squares analysis) reveal a significant reduction in the slope and an increase in the intercept for specimens cathodically charged with hydrogen, regardless of whether the hydrogen is present during testing or is removed by evacuation. Other than surface blistering, the major effect of cathodically charging this material is to create occasional grain boundary cracks and thus presumably a large number of free dislocations at grain boundaries. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the slope of the Petch plot is related to the stress required to activate dislocation sources at or near pain boundaries. While there is no significant effect of the presence of hydrogen on the lower yield stress of this material, the ductility is considerably reduced. After hydrogen removal by evacuation, the ductility recovers substantially and almost complete recovery of ductility is experienced by the smaller grain size specimens. THE influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of ferritic materials has received much attention throughout the history of the metallurgy profession. This interest has stemmed from the obvious importance of preventing the catastrophic failure of parts in service, and from the desire to determine what mechanism is responsible for the observed behavior. The various mechanisms proposed for hydrogen em-brittlement have been discussed in detail by Tetel-man,'who concludes that a combination of the applied stress and hydrogen pressure within voids best accounts for the many experimental observations reported. From a quite reasonable correlation of the strain aging and delayed-failure behavior of a variety of materials,2-7 Troiano and coworkers are of the opinion that the delayed-failure mechanism (slow strain rate embrittlement as well) is better explained as a lattice effect; solute elements diffuse to regions of high triaxial stress, form uncondensed atmospheres there, and effect a reduction in the cohesive strength of the lattice. Since hydrogen yield points8,9 have been observed in ferritic materials, and since the hydrogen embrittlement process may be related to strain aging, one further contribution to embrittlement could be hydrogen-dislocation interactions which make crack blunting by plastic deformation a more difficult process. The etch" relationship offers a means of comparing the relative ease of initiating and propagating plastic deformation in metals and alloys. In the present study, this relationship was used to compare the behavior of zone-refined iron in three conditions: uncharged, cathodically charged with hydrogen, and cathodically charged with hydrogen and evacuated. These Petch plots and the observed ductility parameters allowed a separation of the effects of the very presence of hydrogen and the act of cathodically charging hydrogen into this material. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An ingot of zone-refined iron was obtained from Battelle Memorial Institute which contained the following (typical) interstitial impurities in ppm: carbon, 10 * 5; nitrogen, 1; oxygen, 22; hydrogen, 0.9. Direct observations were made on the recrystalli-zntion of a cold-rolled (110) [001] crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe by annealing thin sections of the specimen inside the electron microscope during examination. Subgrain formation, presumably by polygonization, occurs rapidly, followed by a slow increase in the subgrain size before recrystallization can be detected. No migration of the subgrain boundaries was observed, and the formation of recrystallization nuclei by coalescence of subgrains is suggested. Re-c~ystallization characteristics of various texture components were individually examined. AS reported in a previous paper: orientations of the various deformation texture components in a 70 pct cold-rolled (110) [0011 crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe were completely confirmed by transmission electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen. These orientations can be summarized as follows: Over most areas of the deformed crystal (111) planes are parallel to the surface. These areas correspond to either $- the two main defor: mation textures, the (111) [112] or the (111) [112].2-5 Within a few areas, (100) planes parallel to the surface are frequently found. These areas represent the minor deformation texture component, the (100) [Oll] type, which is derived from rotated Neumann bands.2'4'5 Only in very rare instances are (110) planes found parallel to the surface. This orientation corresponds to the very weak texture component of the (110) [001] type. In a pole figure, this (110) [0011 orientation is located within the orientation spread between the two main (111) [1121 type textures. Usually the electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen are very simple ones, i.e., for any one area the pattern consists only of sharply defined spots of a single orientation. In some areas, however, more or less continuous rings of weaker intensities are superimposed on a simple pattern, indicating the presence of a wide range of additional orientations. In order to understand in detail the recrystallization of this cold-worked crystal, the recrywtallization characteristics of each of the various deformation texture components must be examined. This can best be done by using a high-temperature stage and transmission electron microscopy techniques, whereby small areas corresponding to the various texture components can be selected individually for examination. The present paper presents results obtained by this method. MATERIAL AND METHOD Specimens were prepared from a previously studied1 single crystal of a commercial grade 3 pct Si-Fe alloy with an initial orientation (110) [00l], cold-rolled 70 pct from 0.014 in. to 0.004 in. in thickness. Thin foils were prepared by electrolytic polishing as described in the earlier paper.' Specimens of this thin foil were then mounted in a high temperature stage similar to the one designed by Whelan.6 A direct current was used as the heating source. The temperature of the heating grid was calibrated by means of a Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple in a vacuum chamber (0.01 to 0.02µHg). Maximum variation within the temperature range of 250o to 000°C was about ± 25°C. After the desired areas were selected for examination, the specimen was heated to a low temperature for some time while the selected area was constantly watched. When no further change in structure and orientation could be observed, a higher temperature was applied. The remarkable phenomena exhibited by the aluminum alloy known as duralumin were discovered during the years 1903-1911 by A. Wilm1,2 and have been described by him and by others. 3 4 5 6 The unusual feature of this alloy is the fact, as was shown by Wilm, that it can be hardened quite appreciably by quenching from temperatures below its melting point followed by aging at ordinary temperatures, which consists merely f allowing the material to stand at these temperatures. The hardness is not produced by the quenching alone but increases during the period of aging, which may be from one to three days. Cohn3, 5 gives data showing the increase of hardness of duralumin during aging, after quenching in water from about 450° C. Upon annealing, the alloy so hardened by aging is softened exactly as is hardened steel. The composition of this alloy usually varies within the following limits: Copper, 3 to 4.5 per cent.; magnesium, 0.4 to 1.0 per cent.; manganese, 0 to 0.7 per cent.; aluminum, balance; iron (as impurities), 0.4 to 1 per cent.; silicon, 0.3 to 0.6 per cent. Its density is about 2.85. It is used only in the forged or rolled condition. This alloy has been produced for some years commercially and is in demand for the fabrication of parts for which both lightness and strength are required, such as for aircraft. Its tensile strength will average 50,000 to 60,000 lb. per. sq. in. (3515 to 4218, kg. per sq. cm.) after appropriate heat treatment, such as that described by Wilm.

Diesel locomotives, trucks, bulldozers, and other diesel-powered equipment are fast proving their superiority for mine transportation purposes. MORE than 100 minerals are mined and processed in the U. S. Management and labor have negotiated wage-scale agreements that have balanced wages and affected cost of labor in such a manner that comparisons can be made of transportation costs. Transportation of materials underground has become of vital importance.1"0 This report describes underground haulage methods and equipment, presents cost analyses, and discusses future plans for underground transportation in metal mines. It does not cover hoisting in shafts or slopes by cage, skip, or cars. Advancements have been made by the metal mining industry in lowering transportation costs in several mines, making it possible to mine orebodies or portions of orebodies not considered economically recoverable a few years ago.7,8 Wumerous reports have been written on transportation at metal mines; this report covers recent haulage at some representative mines throughout the U. S. The term metal mine is used to include all noncoal mines from which up-to-date information was obtainable. The best haulage equipment is subject to break- downs and accidents; but unless the rolling equipment, track, and signal systems are kept in good repair and are operated systematically, these breakdowns and accidents are likely to be frequent, destructive, and more costly than are necessary.10 Rail haulage crews using dependable rolling stock can move trips safely over grades low enough to be traveled without loss of control; this applies particularly if the track is straight and well maintained. Few accidents occur on main haulage lines if visibility and clearance are good and clear track is assured. One-way traffic underground is a recent development contributing to reduction of accidents and increased efficiency in mine haulage (Kelly mine, Anaconda Co., Butte, Mont., and Climax mine, Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo.)." Locomotives: Six types of mine locomotive used in recent years are trolley, storage battery, combination trolley and storage battery, diesel, compressed air, and gasoline. Electric haulage has been displaced by compressed air locomotives, which have been used successfully in certain instances, especially on dirty and wet tracks and steep grades." Maintenance cost is high, and operating efficiency, from a power standpoint, is low. Compressed air locomotives operate under self-contained power, and the absence of bare elec-

[ ] THE present investigation started in an attempt to understand certain details of the decomposition of austenite, and of the effect of alloying elements thereon. As the investigation proceeded it became apparent that not only these details, but all the general features of austenite decomposition, could be understood in terms of fundamental physical principles. Since the direct applicability of these physical principles has not been previously recognized, it was decided to incorporate the original results of the investigation into a review of the general subject of the kinetics of austenite decomposition. This review constitutes the present article. An extended summary of the results is given on pages 27 to 30. This article, which deals with the kinetics of phase transformations, may appropriately be considered as a sequel to two recent articles1,2 from this laboratory on the equilibrium relations in medium alloy steels.

The rise of a new laboratory model for studying tran-sient fluid flow problems, is described. The theory of he model is based on the analogy between the equa-ions which describe the flow of compressible fluids in porous media and the conduction of heal m solids. The "thermal model" is used to study the Iransient Pressure distributions during fluid displacement in five Standard well patterns. The studies indicate quantita-ively how die pressures change with lane at any poit in the reservoir. It was found that, in general, the equipressure contours are more radial about the wells early in the program than after steady-state conditions are established. In addition two studies of fractured five-spot patterns are presented to illustrate the opplicability of the model for a wide range of reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION In reviewing the oil recovery techniques involving fluid displacement it was found that a very considerable quantity, if not all of the fluid within the pattern, mav be displaced (during a time-dependent or transient period rather than the usually applied steady-state conditions. Since the oil is displaced during a transient period, it was believed desirable to study the nature of the transients for several of the commonly used fluid displacement patterns. A literature review indicated fairly complete studies of the streamlines and isopotentials for steady-state: yet few data were available on the transient displacement process. Several simulated steady-state multiwell displacement programs were carefully mapped by Foster and Lodge on an electrical conducting sheet as early as 1875, hut the more recent work of Muskat provides the best source for steady-state phenomena having direct petroleum production applications. In order to study the transient phenomena a new lab-oratory model was developed which is based on the similarity of the equations that describe the flow of fluids and the conduction of heal. The equations describing heat flow were developed early in the nineteenth century. Regorous solutions tor most transient problems are in gcneral complex and usually limited to fairly restricted houndary conditions.2 the thermal model may be used to obtain approximate solutions for many transient problems without some of the restrictions required for analytical solution. The application of the analogy between heat conduc-. tion in solids. electrical flow and fluid flow, in a porous media has long been recognised. Techniques originally developed for the solution of heat conduction prol?lems have in many instances proved useful in ohtaining solutions to fluid flow prohlcms. Ir is not surpri5ing then that a heat conduction or thermal model might bf usefull in sludying transient fluid flow. As an example ol the problems suitable for the study with the thermal model, transient pressure distributions during fluid displacement programs are studied for the five-spot, line-drive, staggered line-diibe. seven-spot 211 two fractured patterns. A model was constructed of an iron plate of geometry similar to the reservoir patterns under study. The principle of mirror images as suggested by Bryan was employed in shaping the model. A temperature differential was obtained by soldering two sections of copper tubing to the plate at points analogous to the well location in the field. Hot and cold water was passed through the tubing. The temperature distribution, analogous to the pressure distribution in the field. was obtained a a function of time from thermocouplcs distributed over the plate.

The sinusoidal surface relaxation technique has been used to measure the surface self-diffusion coefficient of spectroscopically pure nickel over a wide temperature range under a hydrogen atmosphere. A kink in the Arrhenius plot has been observed. In the temperature range T/T 0.98 to 0.80 (T in O K and T, is the melting temperature) the average self diffusion coefficient is given by Below the temperature T/T,- 0.80a decrease in the slope of the log Ds us 1/T plot is observed. This is associated with a diffusion process characterized by a lower activation energy (-20,000 cal mole'') and smaller preexponential term (-10- sq cm sec"). A series of experiments were carried out at T/Tm = 0.61 under a hydrogen atmosphere of higher oxygen partial pressure than for the rest of the experiments. It was found that Ds was significantly depressed due to oxygen adsorption. This evidence supports the opinion that the low temperature process (activation energy -20,000 cal mole-') is unlikely to be due to oxygen adsorption. An interesting feature of the present data is that the transition temperature (T/Tm - 0.80) is a function of orientation. For a small number of crystals of measured orientation the transition temperature was observed to be higher towards the low index (100) pole. Theories of surface diffusion are briefly reviewed and it is concluded that the present reszuts are best explained by invoking a surface roughening process. GJOSTEIN has recently analyzed available surface diffusion data for a wide range of metals. He suggested that two mechanisms were operative for fcc metals, an adatom process at high temperatures and a vacancy process at low temperatures. Results for nickel can be summarized as follows. At low temperatures (T/T, - 0.3 to 0.44) under ultra high vacuum conditions, Melmed2 measured an activation energy Q of 21 kcal mole-' using field electron emission microscopy. At higher temperatures (T/T - 0.7 to 0.9) under a vacuum of 10- ' torr, Maiya and lakel measured y as 39 kcal mole-' using the multiple scratch smoothing technique. The present work was undertaken to try to find out if two distinct processes could be observed. High temperature results give Q about 47 kcal mole-': there is evidence also for a low temperature value of about 20 kcal mole-'. These measurements were all made under a hydrogen atmosphere, in the temperature range 860" to 1412°C. Concurrent with the present study Bonze1 and jostein> have also observed a break in the Arrhenius plot for the (110) surface of nickel. These measure- ments under ultrahigh vacuum conditions using the laser diffraction technique are in excellent agreement with the work reported here under hydrogen annealing conditions. THEORY The available surface relaxation techniques include single and multiple scratch smoothing and grain boundary grooving. The processes have been compared in detail by Gjostein for conditions where surface diffusion dominates6 and Mills et al? where volume diffusion dominates. In summary the relevant points are as follows. Grain boundary grooving gives an average Ds for the two surfaces adjacent to the boundary and this can, to some extent, be simplified by using symmetrical bicrystals. This technique has been used to study the effect of environment on Ds for silver and copper.'-'' Scratch techniques yield Ds values for the small orientation range exposed by the scratches (-2 deg). The multiple scratch process is preferable because the profile rapidly becomes sinusoidal and can then be interpreted theoretically in a relatively simple way. Also corrections for mass transport processes other than surface diffusion can be introduced easily. Mullins" considered a sinusoidal profile described the wavelength of the profile. DURING an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investiga-tion was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this sys-tem as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. S. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon system8 was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essen-tial features, except the temperature of the peritectic line above 830° C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centered cubic with a lattice constant of 2.848 A.. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexag-onal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will be adhered to in the present paper.

The principal producing areas of fire clay in Missouri are: (I) the east central district, which includes Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery, Warren, and Boone Counties (Fig. I); (2) the St. Louis district, which includes St. Louis and St. Louis County; (3) the north central Ozark district, which includes Franklin, Gasconade, Osage, Maries, Phelps, and Crawford Counties. Most of the semiplastic‡ fire clay is found in Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery and St. Louis Counties, and in St. Louis. Flint fire clay is found in Callaway, Audrain, and Montgomery Counties and in most of the north centra! Ozark district. High-alumina diaspore clay is found only in the north central Ozark district, except a few deposits found in Montgomery County. This paper is concerned with the semi-plastic fire clay that occurs in the east central Missouri district near Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri, which is mined by the open-pit method as practiced by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. About one-fourth of the semiplastic fire clay in that district is mined in shaft mines, and three-fourths in open pits.
