Dewatering is a major operational cost at some mines. Under certain conditions, costs associated with water disposal may continue beyond the productive bye of the mine. For mines with mineralized waters, this is of special concern. Since 1974 experience has been gained from examination of a number of closed underground metal mines that exhibited drainage problems. It was observed, in certain cases, that had appropriate steps been taken prior to closure, the resulting drainage problems could have been largely avoided. Reclosure steps would have involved alteration to the 'plumbing system" of the mines; i.e., the drifts and crosscuts interconnecting the mine workings. This could have best been accomplished by the placement of bulkheads and/or selective drifting. In addition to reconfirming that hindsight is 20-20, a lesson learned from these case studies shows that a relatively simple hydrologic evaluation prior to mine closure may avoid a troublesome and costly drainage problem.

When Robert H. Richards wrote Ore Dressing, the famous four-volume work published in the first decade of this century, the ore dresser was still largely concerned, with the mechanical treatment of ores. Since then, however, economics have transformed him into a mineral processing engineer who must increasingly deal with closely integrated facilities designed to produce a commodity for manufacturing. Moreover, this change will grow marked as the complex low- grade ores of the future make it ever more necessary for him not only to use the best combination of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and physical separation processes, but also to integrate these processes at the mine site. Nor are economic pressures the only ones propelling the processing engineer into a new era. The ecology drive has thrown him into a new situation in which his economic base is radically altered, and it could well precipitate as drastic a revolution in his technology as that which took place when flotation was developed.

B.: The recent cable I sent you for a transfer of $200,000 was the outcome of the diligence and perspicacity of our group which, as you know, is laboring under severe hardships here in Rondônia. I only mention the latter difficulties in passing because no reply has been received to our urgent appeal for money. As much as I detest appearing to plead for more attention than you feel called upon to pay to our forgotten mission, I can assure you that it would be in the best interest of the company for you to do so. The fact is, we have been able to outmaneuver the competition and have succeeded in securing pesquizas on some of the most promising cassiterite gravels. We have not been able, up to now, to do much bulk sampling (for lack of funds) but our preliminary panning shows great promise as you can see from the enclosed assay sheets.

So many factors influence blasting results that theories and rules are usually dismissed as impractical; the practice prevailing today is arrived at by cut and try. Usually the first step is to experiment with drillhole patterns and spacing until an arrangement is found that gives best results. The next step is to experiment with different types of explosives and sequences of blasting until the most satisfactory degree of fragmentation is achieved and until no further reduction in cost is immediately apparent. Improved fragmentation is generally attributed to the type of powder used, the sequence in which the holes are blasted, or the use of millisecond delays. Various types of drill rounds have been evolved in tunneling operations, underground development headings, and stoping, and various patterns of blasting in open pit mines and quarries. These practices usually are carried from mine to mine or from district to district, and great skill is exercised by those experienced in the art of blasting.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must he secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

n approach to the study of the electrical properlies of drilling muds, their cakes and their filtrates was made by treating the drilling fluid as a porous medium. Lluring this study it was found that the weight pararneter was omitted from previous investigations on electrical properties. Patnode in 1949 made a similar approach to ,his investigation. His work showed that there was a variation of resistivity relationships with per cent Puid present in a given suspension. This present study ex-tends Patnode's investigation to one in terms of the solids fraction of the drilling fluids. Previous investigations were made on low weight muds where the effect of the rolids fraction was obscured. The following equationr were fitted to data taken from 94 field muds and 47 laboratory muds (see Tables I and 2). The parameter, C, is a complex function of the solidr content, or mud weight, of a drilling fluid. It was also found that for all drilling muds examined. A nomograph is presented combining Eqs. I and 2. INTRODUCTION It is generally recognized that the materials present in drilling muds affect the relationship between mud filtrate and mud resistivities. However, most electric log interpretations proceed with the assumption that the mud resistivity and temperature are the only important parameters needed to obtain a filtrate resistivity or a mud cake resistivity. Lamont1 suggests that only average relationships exist between mud cake, mud filtrate and mud resistivities. He indicates that there is limited accuracy when these intercorrelated factors are used since no other measure-able variable is apparent. A previous paper by Patnode indicates that drilling fluids may be considered to be a system of fluids in solid particles which may be correlated electrically in a manner similar to rock solids. 1 he equation for the resistivity factor. F = (per cent fluid) is satisfied for a given clay type in water, but the value of m varies as different materials are used in the water. The resistivity factor is not constant for a given amount of clay. As is suspected it varies as the solids fraction conducts electrical current. Since both weighting material and clay solids are present in commonly used drilling fluids, it is expected that both materials contribute to the variation of the m factor in Eq. 3. An extension of Patnode's work is presented in this paper to show some of the interrelations which exist between the resistivities of mud cake, mud filtrate and mud. Use of these data enable a more accurate calculation of mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities if only the mud resistivity and weight are measured. EXPERIMENTAL The measurements of mud weight, fluid and solids resistivity, alkalinity, and chloride content of mud samples were made in this research. Mud samples representing drilling fluids from 94 Louisiana and Texas wells (Table 1) and 47 laboratory-constructed systems (Table 2) were used in the experimentation. The measurements of the mud properties were made both in the field and in the laboratory. The tests on the properties of weight, alkalinity and chloride ion were standard tests as described by API specifications. THE mechanism of pressure sintering, or hot pressing, for ceramic materials, has been investigated by several researchers.1-8 Plastic flow has been suggested as the rate-determining mech-anism1,2 while grain boundary sliding3,4 and fragmentation processess have been found controlling in other studies. Vasilos and Spriggs5,6 have reported that pressure sintering occurs by a diffusion-controlled mechanism. For the pressure sintering of metals, investigations with lead7 and with tin6 have not identified the operative mechanism during consolidation of these powders. This note reports the results of a pressure sintering study initiated to determine the mechanism controlling the densification of spherical copper powder. Temperatures of 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600°C at 2500, 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures were investigated. The copper powder for this study was obtained from Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N.J. The minimum purity was reported to be 99.9 pct. The powder size was -325 mesh and a lineal analysis showed the average size to be less than 1 p. An alumina die body and punches were employed. Graphite spacers were placed between the copper powder and the punches before pressing. It was expected that the graphite would form carbon monoxide with any entrapped air and form a reducing atmosphere within the die cavity. This condition was generally realized during pressing although a minor amount of oxidation occurred at 500" and 600°C. The oxide particles were located randomly in the pressed samples and were not considered to influence the densification process. Calibration tests showed the temperature of the copper pellet to be about 20°C less than the die wall temperature, probably resulting from heat losses through the punches. This difference was compensated during the experimental pressing operations. The hot pressing equipment employed for this work has been described by Spriggs et a1.9 and was calibrated with a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton load cell. Travel of the punches was monitored with a dial indicator showing increments of travel to 0.0005 in. Relative density was calculated at selected time intervals for a known copper weight, punch travel, and die diameter. The accuracy of this calculation was *1 pct. Average grain size after hot pressing was obtained by lineal analysis. Typical densification curves are presented in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 where relative density is plotted vs log time as a function of applied pressure for the 300" and 600°C pressure sintering temperatures, respectively. The curves for 400" and 500°C were similar to those at 300°C and consequently are not shown. The curves at 300°C as well as 400" and 500°C do not show an end-point or limiting density for a particular applied pressure. At 600°C, a density in excess of 95 pct of theoretical has been reached such that further densification is extremely slow for the 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures. It is suggested that further densification at these pressure levels may be retarded or prevented by discontinuous grain growth, by entrapped gases, and by other microstructural limitations as described by Cob1e.10 The curve for 2500 psi hot pressing pressure is a straight line over the time interval although a slight change in slope may be occurring at the last time intervals. The plastic flow models,1,2 derived for hot pressing, predict the existence of an end-point (or limiting) density dependent on the yield point of the material at the temperature of interest. This paper concerns field experiments to define the areal extent, orientation and thickness of an artificial fracture in the Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex. The fracture was made by a sand-oil treatment of 176,-000 gal of lease crude containing a fluid-loss additive and 270,000 lb of 20-40 mesh subangular Poteet sand. The well was perforated with a jet gun, consisting of six shots in a single plane. Fourteen test holes were drilled at various locations around the fractured well. Drill-stem tests, Micro and Sonic Logs, coring and sampling of formation cuttings were used to determine the presence of the fracture in these holes. The test holes were drilled at distances up to 250 ft in a radial pattern around the fractured well. In addition to fracture areal extent and orientation, sand grain size before and after fracturing, erosion of perforations and fracture thickness were studied. INTRODUCTION The orientation,12 areal extent3, 4 and thickness5-9 of artificially induced fractures in reservoir rock by hydraulic means have been discussed in great detail in the oil industry in recent years. Methods for initiating vertical"' and horizontal" fractures have been tested in the laboratory and the field. Although the methods used give successful well stimulation, good field data on the physical characteristics of the fracture are lacking in the literature. It is recognized generally that properties of a fracture, such as thickness, sand placement in the fracture" and shape, may vary from reservoir to reservoir. This paper gives data on size, orientation and sand placement in a large fracture initiated in a single plane in Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex. It is not intended as a speculative study; rather, it is restricted to actual field data on fracture properties. No attempt is made to prove that the same type of fracture occurs in all wells. The field procedure was to drill 14 test holes at various locations around the fractured well. By employing several different testing techniques, the presence of the fracture and some of its characteristics were determined. These techniques as well as the results obtained are discussed in detail in this paper. DESCRIPTION OF FRACTURE TREATMENT N. J. Chittim Well No. 37-1, completed in the San Miguel No. 1 sand, Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex., was chosen for the field study. The San Miguel sand is a tight, well consolidated sandstone with an average porosity of 23 per cent. The permeability ranges from 0.1 to 10 md, with a median permeability of 2.3 md. The sand thickness averages 23 ft and is located at depths of 1,150 to 1,700 ft throughout the field.I3 The fracture treatment performed on Well 37-1 was as follows. 1. The well was drilled to a depth of 1,438 ft with native mud, and 51/2-in. casing was set and cemented to the surface. 2. The casing was perforated at 1,349 ft with a fracture-initiating jet gun. This gun consists of six shots, 7/16-in. diameter in a single horizontal plane. The jets were oriented in two groups of three, 180" opposed. The perforating device was designed to initiate a fracture perpendicular to the wellbore.

Using a scratch smoothing technique, the magnitude and the ratio of the surface diffusion coefficients (D,) in two orthogonal directions have been measured on copper for over 100 different surface orientations. Anisotropy was found for all surface orientations except those lying near the (100) and (111); however, these anisotropies were rarely greater than 2.0. The direction of maximum D, appears to coincide with the direction of step edges on any given surface, and if no such steps exist, no anisotropy is found. Thus the jump frequency along a step edge is shown to be faster than the frequency of a jump over the step. The values of Ds and AH for the (100) and the (111) orientations agree quite well with those obtained earlier by the grain boundary grooving technique. It is proven that the directions of maximum and minimum D, (the principal axes) for any surface orientation are known if the perfectly ordered plane corresponding to the given surface orientation possesses a plane of mirror symmetry. Thus the principal axes of D, for orientations lying along the sides of the unit stereo-graphic triangle are always known independent of the extent of thermal disorder or impurity adsorption. The merits and shortcomings of King and Mullins' recently published equations relating Ds to the rate of scratch smoothing are discussed. 1N an earlier paper the authors have reported the variation of the surface diffusion coefficient (Ds) with surface orientation on copper.' In that study Ds was determined from the rate of growth of grain boundary grooves on symmetric bicrystals. This gave values of Ds from 850° to 1070°C in a given direction on each of the six surfaces. It was found that the activation energy for surface diffusion was essentially the same for all six surfaces. The theory developed to explain these data assumed that the free energy of any given type of surface site depends only on the number of nearest neighbors the atom has. This same theory predicted that on any given surface Ds should be independent of direction. The primary aim of this study was to check the validity of this prediction for a wide range of surface orientations on copper. The growth of grain boundary grooves is ideal for studying Ds in a given direction on a given surface over a range of temperatures, because the same specimen can be repolished and used again. However, there is considerable work involved in growing a symmetric bicrystal, and for a survey of Ds in two or more directions on many surface orientations, the technique would be arduous. A better technique appeared to be the scratch method used primarily by Mykura. 2 If a scratch is placed in a surface whose surface tension is independent of orientation, the surface will smooth out in time under the influence of surface tension. To determine D, from this flattening, Blakely and Mykura2 used an approximate solution which was assumed to describe the rate of flattening. Recently King and Mullins3 (hereinafter K and M) have given a more exact analysis of the flattening of an isolated scratch. A second aim of this paper was to check the validity of this newer analysis and compare the values of Ds determined thereby with the values obtained from grain boundary grooving techniques. IN concentration of certain ores by soap flotation, prevention of quartz flotation is desired; the contrary is true in treatment of some oxide iron ores. Experimental study of the flotation of quartz goes back at least a quarter of a century.' Clean quartz does not float with fatty acids or soaps but does float when activated by one of many metallic salts. Control of pH is important. Broadly speaking the problem of quartz flotation has been approached from the empirical side, as was the related topic of flocculation or dispersion of quartz suspensions? Empirical studies indicated the existence of critical relationships between the additions of collector and activator. These additions were not stoichiometric for the formation of soaps of the activator cation. For example, Gaudin and Rizo-Patrona found optimum quartz flotation at pH 10.6 using barium activation and oleate collection when the molar ratio of oleate to barium was 1 to 1 instead of 2 to 1, as would be called for formation of Ba(OL),. Cooke and Digre" ' found that if calcium is the activator, a minimum quantity of that agent is required for effective flotation when the pH is 11.5. In other words, if the concentration of Na' exceeds 10 -2.5 mols per liter or if the concentration of H exceeds 10-11 mols per liter, the concentration of Ca++ in solution required for quartz activation is increased. This suggests that H+ is much more effective than Na+ on 10-2.5 quartz, perhaps in the ratio ofp or 108. Schuh- mann and Prakash6 studied anew the activation of quartz by barium, calcium, aluminum, and ferric iron. Salts of these metals are activators provided they are in stoichiometric excess over the collector used with them. Alkaline-earth salts are effective only in alkaline circuits. Important as they are in giving data on the effect of various agents on quartz, all these studies fail to give information on the detailed structure of the quartz-solution interface. A beginning in this direction was made by Gaudin and Chang,? who measured the adsorption of radioactively marked barium and laurate ions at quartz surfaces, and by Gaudin. Spedden, and Laxen,8 ho measured the adsorption of radioactively marked sodium at quartz surfaces. Work has also been done by Bell0 n measurement of the adsorption of sodium ion and chloride ion at quartz-solution interfaces. In all these experimental measurements of adsorption, the solid was centrifuged or filtered from the bulk of the liquor with which it had been associated; and the composition of the solid surface was ascertained by analysis, after allowance was made for the ionic composition of the liquor included with the centrifuged solids on the assumption that it is identical to the bulk liquid. Adsorption measurements give only the total amount of collector adsorbed at the quartz-solution interface; they give no indication of the distribution of these adsorbed ions at the interfacial layer. It is the ionic structure of the solid-solution interface and its importance to flotation that is the subject of this paper. The structure of this interfacial layer can be investigated by means of electrokinetic methods so that by combining electrokinetic studies with adsorption measurements, a more complete picture of the quartz surface may be obtained. A commercial Ti-Fe-Cr alloy, Ti-150, exhibits a martensitic transformation on cooling and two nucleation and growth reactions, one above and one below the Mg-Mf region, on isothermal holding below the single-phase ß temperature range. The reactions were followed by metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and microhardness methods. THE rapidly expanding engineering application of titanium and its alloys makes increasingly urgent an adequate knowledge of the effect of heat treatment on this material. The work herein reported is an attempt to determine certain aspects of the behavior of a commercially available alloy, Ti-150, during heat treatment. The alloy, with a nominal composition of 2.7 pct Cr, 1.3 pct Fe, 0.25 pct 0, 0.02 pct N, and 0.02 pct C, was received in the as-rolled condition as a 3/4 in. round. Slugs 0.11 to 0.12 in. thick were cut under a coolant using a silicon carbide wheel. Preliminary work established that the alloy consists of two phases, a (hexagonal close-packed) and /3 (body-centered cubic), at temperatures below 1750" to 1775"F, and of only /3 phase at higher temperatures. The slugs were heated for 1 hr in air at 1800°F to form a single-phase /3 matrix, then transferred to molten tin (1250° to 1650°F) or lead (1150°F and below) for isothermal holding. Holding temperatures ranged from 700° to 1650°F, times from 0.001 to 23 hr. The treated slugs were then sectioned, one part for metallographic examination and diamond pyramid hardness, the other, after deep etching to remove the high oxygen surface,' for comparative lattice parameter determination and X-ray phase identification. Hardness measurements were taken on the lightly etched surfaces of the metallographic specimens; a 1000 g load on a 136° diamond pyramid was used. Five impressions on each sample were made and the average of the hardness calculated. The use of microhardness measurements to follow the course of an isothermal transformation reaction is undesirable because of the possibility of wide differences in microconstituent hardness.' They were used in this case, however, because of the small amount of material available. At the higher transformation temperatures, where the above-mentioned objection was apparent, the readings were proportioned to correspond to the estimated ratio of transformed and untransformed constituents present. At lower temperatures, resulting in much finer microconstituents, the microhardness measurements were more uniform. The standard deviation of the mean of five impressions calculated from these latter values was 4.2 DPH. Employing 2a limits (probability 0.95) the experimental error of the hardness measurements averages was 8.4 DPH. The etchant used was composed of one part glyc-erol and one part 48 pct hydrofluoric acid." Of a number of etches tried, this one appeared most satisfactory. All micrographs were taken at 500X magnification and with oblique lighting to permit easier identification of the acicular structure resulting from rapid cooling. No advantage was gained by using polarized light for metallographic examination. Phase identification and lattice parameter measurements were made with a North American Philips high angle spectrometer in conjunction with a recording potentiometer. Considerable difficulty was encountered with some of the lattice parameter measurements because of the extreme broadness of the few diffraction lines obtained from samples consisting mainly of strained, untempered, quenched structures.

INDUSTRIAL mineral history shows that the entrance of new, nonmetallic minerals into commercial production can be expected to occur from time to time. Latest entrant into the field is wollastonite. Except for one short-lived period in Kern County, Calif., starting in 1933, wollastonite has never before been produced on a commercial scale. But the signs are up for its entrance as an economic factor in the mineral market. Small scale experimental production from a deposit near Willsboro, N. Y., started about 1943. A pilot plant was built in 1949-50 and irregular, small scale, production has continued. In early 1951 Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. of Boston, world's largest producer of carbon black, took an operational lease on the property to study the deposits and make market surveys. This became Cabot's first venture in the mineral field, when they took over operations and began design of a new mill, expected in production in 1953. Properties The properties and major uses of wollastonite are comparable to New York fibrous talc. It has about the same specific gravity and index of refraction as talc, but is somewhat whiter and softer. The two most important fields of use, paint and ceramics, are the same as for talc. Ground wollastonite has a fiber length as much as 13 to 15 times the diameter. This particular property makes it applicable in the paint field and others. In addition, the length-diameter ratio may be controlled to rather narrow limits by choice of grinding method. Another important commercial property is brightness or whiteness. Wollastonite reads from 92 to 96 pct of MgO on the G.E. brightness meter for a 99 pct -325 mesh grind. Purity and uniformity of product are important. Chemically, the wollastonite now being mined analyzes SiO2 51.76, CaO 47.56, FeO 0.46, MnO 0.04, and H2O 0.09 pct. Theoretically pure wollastonite analyzes SiO2 51.75 and CaO 48.25 pct. This analysis indicates over 98 pct calcium silicate, with only small amounts of contaminating ingredients. That these ingredients are not detrimental to color or brightness is shown by the high brightness value of the fine ground material. [ ] By-product calcium silicate from electric furnace production of phosphoric acid has little physical re-semblance. to this wollastonite, being an off color white, and lacking in fibrous crystalline character. Minerology Wollastonite is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3, a white, medium hard, fibrous mineral. In this deposit wollastonite occurs as well crystallized aggregates of bladed crystals intergrown with garnet, and with a few percent of green diopside. The beneficiated product is about 75 pct wollastonite, 15 pct garnet, and 10 pct waste, largely middling. Wollastonite-garnet ore occurs in at least two beds. The main bed, varying in true thickness from 30 to 70 ft, dips into the hill at an average 30° and is enclosed in gneisses. Diamond drilling has proven the orebody to an average depth of 200 ft along 2000 ft of outcrop with adequate tonnage for many years of quarry operation. The wollastonite-garnet ratio varies locally, but average composition is uniform over long distances. A friable ore, it is easy to drill, shoot, and crush. Beneficiation Unlike talc this ore has to be beneficiated. Successful treatment depends upon the fact that it contains virtually nothing but wollastonite, garnet and a minor percentage of diopside. A very pure wollastonite product can be made by high intensity magnetic and/or gravity separation methods.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

THE fifth annual convention of coal-operating men, with the usual exposition of coal-mine equipment, was held at Cincinnati, May 7 to 11 inclusive, and was fully up to the high standard set by previous years. This spring meeting has come to be one of the most helpful services to industry performed by the Ameri-can Mining Congress and a center at which operators and engineers easily and quickly get into touch with the newest and best things in practice and equipment. Over 200 exhibitors showed this year and very little if anything that is new `failed to be shown. The ex-hibits were well arranged and adequate rather than elaborate. They attracted the careful attention of the members and guests of the Congress, admission being by badge rather than by ticket sold to, the general public. Inside, on dusty shelves, is the stored learning of civilized man-the recorded ideas of countless generations. It is somewhat of a magic world. Here are the theories and secrets for which thousands of men toiled and gave their heart's blood. To produce one book on one phase of an ob-scure-subject may have required the best efforts of a group of men unique in their period. To prove one theory, or es-tablish a single application of a theory, may have taken the devotion of a genius who sacrificed his life to his work. The railroad haulage system was started at Kennecott's Bingham Mine in 1906 and has remained a prime mover of ore and waste for the succeeding sixty years. As the stripping ratios increased contract stripping on the upper levels of the mine was introduced employing truck and shovel methods. The ore production then was 90,000 tpd. Analysis of expanding the ore production to 108,000 tpd revealed that the increased ore production and continually rising stripping ratio would result in waste production requirements that exceeded the capacity of the rail haulage system above 6290 level. The advent of larger haulage trucks (65-100 tons) in the early 1960's made available to the Bing- ham Mine economic and operating factors which showed truck haul- age to be the best replacement for rail haulage on the upper levels of the mine. As part of that analysis it was concluded that company stripping would replace the contractor stripping in the top area of the mine.

Experiments in laboratory and mine have clearly demonstrated the usefulness of radioactivity detection for directly measuring the potassium content of potash ore as mined. This paper presents the results of these tests and documents the design of a system for automatically grading and sorting potash ore on the basis of radiation detection. It is shown how the experimental results in the subject mine lead directly to the design of this kind of an automatic control system. The system is capable of grading the ore with an accuracy of approximately ±2% K20 content or better. Due to the usual stratification of the ore body, mining potash seldom presents an extreme problem of gangue separation. Nevertheless, it is frequently necessary to transport within a potash mine and even hoist to the surface considerable quantities of halite and other valueless materials. Up to recent times it has been customary to recognize and route these materials by simple visual and manual techniques. However, the work reported here clearly demonstrates that it is now practical and economical to improve upon these techniques by continuous measurement1 of the naturally occurring radioactive isotope, potassium-40. It was the purpose of the work reported here to investigate this technique and assess its applicability. LOCALE OF EXPERIMENTS The work described here was carried out in a potash mine in Carlsbad, N.M. At the working face of this mine the potash ore is freed by blasting; it is then transported a short distance by shuttle car to a moving-belt system which conveys it to the main shaft where it is hoisted to the surface. Quantities of gangue which are also produced in the mining operation are disposed of in mined-out sections of the mine where possible. Otherwise, this material which contains only a small percentage of potassium (as K2O) must also be transported by the conveyor-belt system to the main shaft and then hoisted to the surface and discarded. With this situation, any measuring device for automatic control purposes must be capable of clearly distinguishing between gangue containing insignificant amounts of K2O and ore containing larger percentages of the same mineral. The conveyor-belt system transports the material from the mine face to a rotary crusher and then to temporary storage pits at the main shaft. This is shown in Fig. 1. Upon leaving the conveyor belt the material enters either one of the two storage pits according to the position of a manually operated gate. It was decided that all experiments should be carried out at the conveyor belt between the crusher and gate with a view to the possibility of providing a signal which could operate the gate automatically. THEORETICAL BASIS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS In principle it is possible to grade potassium-bearing ore on the basis of radioactivity. Natural potassium contains 0.012% K40, which is radioactive with a half-life of 1.3 x 10' years. Although about 89% of the K40 disintegrates to Ca40 by beta decay, the other 11% changes to Ar40 by electron capture and the emission of gamma rays. Unlike the ß-rays which are readily absorbed in the first few millimeters of ore surrounding the disintegrating nucleus, the y-ray photons will escape from an ore sample several inches in size. A detector rigidly mounted under a conveyor belt loaded with potash ore will intercept some constant fraction of all the photons emitted from the ore within its field of view. Under these
