I N the development of iron mines and production of iron ore from the Marquette range, drilling blast-holes is an important phase of the mining cycle. The ground drilled in ore production can be classified into two main categories, soft hematite and hard hematite or magnetite. Within these categories the material exhibits a wide range of penetrability by percussion drills. Development work encounters various types of rock. Slate and altered basic intrusives constitute the softer types commonly encountered. Harder materials are represented mainly by greywacke, quartzite, iron formation, and diorite.

The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3500 and 4100 ft. The property is 95% covered by overburden which varies in depth from a few feet to 230 ft. Early History and Geology The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims.

C. H. BENEDICT, chief metallurgist of the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., has pioneered for nearly half a century. Noted for his ammonia leaching process, lie has Iong been responsible for all Calumet and Hecla mill, concentrator, and reclaination plant flowsheets. His influence has spread far beyond his own organization. lie is dean of Lake Superior metallurgists and has contributed greatly toward raising his specialty-the country over-to an honored profession; not merely an honored profession but a profitable one for industry and the public. The leaching process which he developed in 1912 has, since 1915, produced for Calumet and Hecla 250,000 tons of copper from waste tailings at a cost per pound, in 1929, below five cents. It has yielded profits of $35,000,000. In the war just ended, this process proved the only one adaptable to the recovery of copper from gilding-metal¬clad steel strip, and Calumet and Hecla treated more than 50,000 tons of such scrap for the Government.

At the Seventy-sixth meeting of the Institute, held in New York, N. Y., February, 1899,I presented a paper on this subject entitled, Coal-Cutting Machinery,' which has become somewhat out of date, in view of the decade's development in this feature of the coal-mining industry. It should be explained that the present paper is limited to the use of mining-machines in bituminous mines. Practically all of the anthracite mined is "shot from the solid," no undercutting being done. Anthracite-mining is therefore not considered in the statistics or other references. The statistical record as compiled by the U. S. Geological Survey shows that in 1898, the year preceding the presentation of my former paper, there were 32,413,144 short tons of coal undercut by the use of machines. In 1907 the machine-mined coal-product amounted to 138,547,823 short tons. In sympathy with the general decrease in coal-production during 1908, the output of machine-mined coal decreased to 123,183,334 short tons, but the proportion of machine-mined coal to the total output, nevertheless, showed an increase, from 35.1 per cent. in 1907 to 37 per cent. in 1908. In 1898 only 19.5 per cent. of the total product was unclercut.by the use of machines. The number of in use in the bituminous mines of the United States has increased from 2,622 in 1898 to 11,144 in 1907, and to 11,569 in 1908. John Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—The activity of FeO in silica-saturated slags shown in Table V is about 0.40 in the temperature range 1260" to 1350°C. Recent measurements by N. A. Gokeen at 1600" lead to about the same value. He finds the oxygen content of liquid iron in equilibrium with silica and ferrous silicate slags to be 0.088 pct. Under pure iron oxide slags at the same temperature, it is 0.225 pct. The ratio places the activity at 0.39.

The subject is one that is worth a great deal of thought and research at this time. It is a well-known fact that the strong affinity of steel or, iron for oxygen is perhaps the main detriment to sound production, and, as the author states, it is-indeed remarkable that today there are no analytical methods in general use in steel works for determining the gaseous con-stituents of steel.

ALL of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.I The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). I have read with much interest the elaborate and able paper of Messrs. Granger and Treville on the Mining Districts of Colombia, presented at the Atlantic City Meeting (ante, p. 33). Going into detail, however, as the paper does—and particularly with reference to the department of Antioquia, I am somewhat surprised that the property of the Frontino and Bolivia Company, probably one of the richest and most extensive in Colombia, should come off with such scant notice. The entire property embraces an area of some 28 square miles, and is situated at a distance of about 2 leagues from Remedios—after Medellin probably the most important town of the Department—and lying in approximately '7° N. latitude. The neighborhood of Remedios has been long celebrated for its production of the precious metal. Alluvial gold in large quantities has been obtained from the vicinity for upwards of two centuries; and even to-day a large proportion of the population finds a comfortable livelihood, during the dry season, in washing the sands of various rivers, notably the Rio Porce; while the amount of gold, in the form of nuggets, brought almost daily to Remedios and other points, from streams in the immediate neighborhood, is astonishing. These nuggets vary much in size. The majority, of course, are small, but larger ones are by no means scarce. I have been considerably surprised at the amount and value of the trade thus transacted between natives and merchants of the various towns. This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Go., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequepce, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the " dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant. An average analysis of the coal, published by Lewis Stockett and 13. R. Warden,' is as follows: Per Cent. The plant is run under two 12-hr. shifts, the force consisting of 1 superintendent for both shifts, 1 engineer for each shift, 1 briquetter for each shift, 1 helper for each shift, 1 laborer cleaning up for each shift. In the pitch-melting house, 2 men are on duty for one shift. The steam for the engine is furnished from a central boiler-plant, which also supplies steam for the breaker, the electric light and power-plant, machinery-shop, and boiler-shop. Qualitatively, galena (native lead sulfide) reacts with aqueous solutions of the xanthates,1 and has its surface sufficiently altered so that there is a tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral crystals where there was no such effect before the treatment. This property is utilized in froth flotation operations where the mineral sulfide particles are raised into the froth and the gangue whose surface is not altered remains behind. The results of a study of this reaction were reported2 recently and certain tentative suggestions about the interaction of galena and the alkali xanthates were offered. In this paper, there is set down the results of a detailed quantitative investigation of the ions involved in this interaction with a view to finding out more about the condition existing immediately at the surface of a crystal like a heavy metal sulfide after treatment with an organic reagent. Past experimental experience showed that finely ground galena shaken with aqueous potassium xanthate abstracts xanthate ion and at the same time sulfate ion, reducing ions of the type (SmOn)= where the ratio of m to n is less than 4:l (as in sulfate), sometimes hydroxyl ion, are thrown into solution.3 Ions Involved in Xanthate-galena Interaction The present quantitative study of the galena-aqueous potassium xanthate system shows that at the lower concentrations of potassium xanthate (less than about 25 mg. per liter) the amount of xanthate ion abstracted by the galena can be accounted for by the amount of reducing ions of the (SmOn)= type and sulfate ion thrown into solution. WITHOUT doubt, one of the most frequent and serious annoyances connected with the practical running of a blast-furnace, especially in single-furnace plants, is caused by low steam, in spite of the fact that all boilers at blast-furnaces have grates for burning coal, and that coal is more or less continuously burned upon them, from three to a dozen men being pretty constantly engaged around the boilers as firemen or coal- and ash-handlers. At times, when the furnace is ? tight," all available men are put on to assist the regular firemen; yet sufficient steam cannot be got to keep the engines up to their regular number of revolutions, while the stoves, deprived of the gas which has been sent to the boilers, run cold, so that, when the furnace loosens-up and resumes the regular rate of driving, the blast is very considerably below normal temperature, and a.' cold," or at best a " high-sulphur," east is the result. Again, it often happens that a furnace, running at its best, becomes temporarily a little too hot; the pressure rises; the amount of gas made' is diminished; the steam soon commences to go down; and a small scaffold is likely to form before the furnace has been brought back to the proper rate of driving, and thus enabled to take its regular amount of blast. The usual remedy is either to "jerk" the furnace by a sudden, brief intermission in blowing, or to cool the furnace by lowering the heat of the blast; but if the lower blast-temperature be maintained too long, the hearth and descending stock may be cooled below the " critical temperature " mentioned by Mr. .Johnson, and the furnace may go to the other extreme, and become cold. This is especially the case when coal or coke, high in sulphur, is used:
