It has been generally recognized that, owing to the extreme friability of galena, fine grinding has a tendency to cause excessive sliming of the mineral, so operators of lead mills have attempted to avoid this condition by commencing concentration at as coarse sizes as any mineral is freed. Jigging has been the basis of the milling process, making a clean coarse concentrate and a large amount of tailing, which was considered sufficiently low-grade to be rejected. However, developments and improvements in concentration processes are everywhere changing the low-grade tailing of yesterday into material worth re-treating today. Investigations of the work of the Hancock jig on the Bonne Terre ore have shown that the best results to be expected will give a tailing assaying 0.75 per cent. lead; the average for all conditions and grades of ore will be between 0.80 and 0.90 per cent. By crushing the jig tailings in ball-mills and retreating by tables and flotation, a tailing of considerably lower grade can be made; the problem then becomes an economic one of increased crushing costs versus higher recovery. In considering the entire elimination of jigging, the increascd smelting charges due to a greater amount of slime galena will be counterbalanced by the lower operating cost, increased recovery, and the many advantages of a simpler flow sheet. In developing these problems in the Bonne Terre mill of the St. Joseph Lead Co., a long series of tests has been carried out covering every stage of crushing and concentration, and a large number of possible flow sheets were considered and tried. Only the final results and a few comparisons will be given here. At the same time, a careful and detailed cost-keeping system has enabled us to compare milling costs with the various Bow sheets, and to calculate the economics of the problem with great accuracy. Concentration Problem The ore occurs as widely scattered deposits of galena disseminated through limestone; it has a specific gravity of 2.8 and the following composition: Pb, 4.00 per cent.; Fe, 3.00 per cent.; Zn, 0.32 per cent.; S, 3.10 per cent.; MnO2, 0.73 per cent.; SiO2, 4.20 per cent.; Al2O3, 3.20 per cent ; CaO, 28.60 per cent.; MgO, 16.85 per cent.; CO2, 36.00 per

A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the' rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas. On the surface of the fluid, there is sometimes a dark brown streaky scum, which

Edward Cooper was born in New York City, Oct. 26, 1824. His father, Peter Cooper, to say nothing of manifold reasoils for fame as an inventor and philanthropist, deserves to be remembered as a pioneer in the establishment .of public schools ; and it is not surprising that. he sent his son to one of the democratic institutions in which he was himself so ardently interested. From the public school Edward Cooper went to Columbia College, where he made the acquaintance of Abram S. Hewitt, who was first his tutor, afterwards his traveling companion, brother-in-law, business partner and life-long friend.' For twenty years I was the consulting engineer of the firm of Cooper & Hewitt, and also connected with the work of the Cooper Union, in which they were both deeply interested and faithfully active. On the basis of the intimate knowledge thus gained, I venture an estimate of Edward Cooper's character and career which, if not fully comprehensive, may facilitate a juster estimate than would be reached by the student of those data which the modesty of the man permitted to be placed upon public record.

The oxygen pressure in equilibrium with silver and Ag2O-B2O3 melts has been measured between 800' and 900°C, to obtain the thermodynamic properties of the liquid. The compound Ag20. 4B20:1 appears to exist in the liquid, which shows marked heat content and entropy effects. A KNOWLEDGE of the thermodynamic properties of binary liquid silicates, borates, and phosphates would be of considerable assistance in the interpretation of the behavior of multi-component metallurgical slags. However, the literature contains comparatively few studies of the thermodynamics of binary slags. The system Ag20-B,O, attracted our attention as it was known to give a single liquid phase,',' in which high contents of silver could be obtained (up to 61 pct Ag according to Foex2). Further, it would be expected that the partial pressure of oxygen over melts in equilibrium with metallic silver could be used to determine the activity of Ag2O in the Ag,O-B,O, system. In many respects, it may be expected that the reaction of a basic oxide with boric oxide would be analogous to its reaction with silica. Liquid immiscibility frequently occurs in both borate and silicate systems. With B2O3 and SiO reaction with a basic oxide presumably involves a breakdown of the three-dimensional network of the acid oxide by reaction with oxygen atoms common to more than one silicon or boron atom. Ag2O-B2O3 was therefore investigated as a model of a slag system in the hope that its thermodynamic properties would assist in understanding those of other systems. Several methods for determining the activity of a component in a slag have been described in the literature. Chang and Derge" used high temperature electromotive force measurements to obtain the activity of SiO2 in CaO-SiO2 and Ca0-Al203-Si02 slags, but the cell reaction in their work is not clear. low has used rate of volatilization and vapor pressure measurements combined with phase diagrams to obtain activities in the systems KO-SiO,, Na,O-SiO, and Li,O-SiO," and PbO-SiO26 Taylor and Chipman7 extrapolated their results for the distribution of FeO between liquid iron and CaO (+Mg0)-FeO-SiOl slags to obtain the activity of FeO in the binary FeO-SiO2 system. In principle, one of the most direct methods for obtaining the activity of a metallic oxide in a phase is by comparison of the equilibrium oxygen pressure for the system metal-pure oxide with that of metal oxide-containing phase. Schenck and othersa have studied the stabilization of Ag2O on combination with other oxides (MO,) in the solid state by measurements of the oxygen pressure in systems of the type Ag-Ag,O-xM0,-MOy-0, (gas). Schuhmann and Ensio" have determined the activity of FeO in iron silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron, using CO/CO2 mixtures to establish known partial pressure of oxygen. Although the method gives the activity of FeO without ambiguity, the slag is not a binary system, and interpretation of the results in terms of the hypothetical binary system FeO-SiO, is not possible. If a metal is solid at temperatures at which the properties of the slag containing its oxide are to be studied, this method has the considerable experimental advantage that the metal can be used as the container for the slag, and contamination by contact with refractories is avoided. In this work, crucibles for Ag2-B,O, melts were made from silver, and the liquid brought to equilibrium with definite pressures of oxygen gas. The oxygen pressure PO, thus fixes the activity of Ag20 in the liquid silver borate. For the reaction at a given temperature. is substantially constant, is directly proportional to the square root of the equilibrium oxygen pressure. Varying the oxygen pressure changed the silver oxide content of the liquid and it was possible to obtain the activity of Ag2O over a range of composition. Experimental Procedure In principle, the method consisted of bringing melts in silver crucibles or boats to equilibrium at a fixed temperature under a definite pressure of oxygen and analyzing the glass after solidification. In September, 1930, H. N. Eavenson, then Chairman of the Coal Division, appointed a Committee on Methods of valuing Coal Propelvties, with John B. Dilworth as chairman. The latter prepared a schedule' of features for consideration under the general headings of Undeveloped and Developed Coal Properties. These subjects were divided among the members of the committee and during the next year written discussions of his allotted subjects were received from each member. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Eavenson discussed the entire list,. These discussions were mimeographed and a set sent to each member before the meeting of the Institute in February, 1932. There was a general discussion at that meeting. At the meeting in February, 1934, Mr. Dilworth submitted a report12 which summarized the accumulated opinions and data and presented the conclusions of the committee as a whole on the subjects embraced in it's schedule. Members of the committee expressed the desire that some of the individual opinions be published for reference. Mr. R. Several high-temperature eutectics of cobalt and nickel alloys were modified by small additions of selected elements. Thes-e alloys were compared to unmodified melts for microstructural variations. A few modified compositions were selected on the basis of structure and their tensile and stress-rupture behavior determined. The results of stress-rupture tests in air at 1800 F and room-temperature tensile tests of four high-temperature eutectics showed modification capable of producing substantial improvements in properties. The microstructures were altered and mechanical properties improved by: a.) dispersing a subordinate phase more uniformly throughout the matrix; b) replacing large continuous -network or platelike constituents with small equiaxed discontinuous phases; and c) by forming new, finely divided phases. tHE term "modification" is most commonly used to describe the refinement in microstructure of the Al-Si eutectic that occurs as a result of rapid cooling from the melt or on slow cooling after treatment with small amounts of sodium.1 "Modification" has also been used to describe the change from flake to spheroidal graphite in the austenite-graphite eutectic of cast iron.2 This change of graphite shape is accomplished by small additions of cerium or magnesium.3 Other systems have also been shown to be capable of modification, for example: Pb-Sn by copper;4 Al-Cu by sodium;5 Al-Mn by sodium;5 and Pb-Sb by aluminum.5 Although modification of Al-Si alloys and cast irons is usually accompanied by improved mechanical properties, a general definition of modification has been suggested to include the effect of small quantities of impurity elements on the microstructures of all eutectic alloys, regardless of the effect on the mechanical properties.6 In this paper, the term "modification" is employed in a broad sense to include the formation of third phases or even the supplanting of one of the binary eutectic phases by a third phase. The mechanism of modification, as for any solidification phenomenon, must be considered primarily in terms of nucleation and growth. Although both nuclea-tion and growth mechanisms are required to explain all the phenomena observed in connection with the solidification of modified eutectics, various investigators have usually favored one or the other.7"16 It has been shown that modification of a binary eutectic can be effected by addition of a solute element that has greatly different distribution coefficients or k values in the two phases of the eutectic. Under these conditions, differences in the temperatures at the solid-liquid interfaces of the two phases retard the growth of one phase with respect to the other.4 It has also been shown that increased undercooling favors a transition from a rodlike eutectic to a globular eutectic.17 A mechanism proposed for the transition from lamellar to rodlike eutectics depends on the concept of constitutional super cooling.18 The modification of eutectic alloys may be of interest for high-temperature service as well as at room temperature. Although "high-temperature eutectic alloys" may appear to be a contradiction in terms, many eutectic systems, including those studied in this work, have melting points in excess of 2400°F. One of the mechanisms by which high-temperature alloys are strengthened is dispersion of a relatively brittle phase such as an oxide, carbide, or an inter-metallic compound throughout a ductile matrix. For a given volume fraction of dispersed phase, strength is increased by decreasing the size and spacing of the dispersed particles.19'20 Furthermore, room-temperature ductility may also be increased by changing the shape of a brittle dispersed phase from platelike to equiaxed or spheroidal.8 Overaging and redissolving of the secondary phase limit the maximum temperature to which precipitation-hardened alloys can be used. However, in a binary eutectic system, both phases coexist up to the melting point. Although all eutectic structures are not completely stable,21 a dispersion-hardened cast high-temperature alloy might result if a fine distribution of one of the eutectic phases could be obtained during solidification. An additional reason for interest in eutectic alloys is their excellent castability.22 Since eutectic alloys, like pure metals, freeze at a single temperature rather than over a range of temperatures, their castability is superior to solid-solution alloys with long liquidus to solidus ranges. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of small solute additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a number of high-melting-point eutectic compositions.

The electrical methods for surface-prospecting have been well developed in the last 20 years. The method involves, in the classic form, the sending of an electrical current into the soil, by means of two electrodes A and B, and studying the potential distribution at the surface, by measuring the difference of potential between pairs of points such as M and N. The points M and N are usually placed on a line between, and equidistant from, A and B. By increasing the distance AB, the current sent into the Earth, and likewise the distribution of surface-potentials, become influenced by regions of greater and greater depth below the surface. By varying the form and dimensions of the electrode-arrangements AMNB, called a "quadripole," one may make valuable deductions concerning the nature or thickness of beds, if one knows the electrical properties of these beds. On the other hand, if the form and dimensions of the electrodes AMNB remain fixed, the depth of penetration of currents in the Earth remains, so to speak, almost constant, although it tends to increase where the subsoil is more conductive, and conversely. Therefore, if one moves the constant-dimension quadripole over all the terrain to be Investigated, one achieves approximately a horizontal exploration. This permits a study of tilted beds or faulted horizon-tal beds. When the particular problem becomes deep, of the order of 2000 meters, or more, it is ne-cessary to Increase the distance between the current-sources AB to a length such that the work 'comes very troublesome, especially if the region is wooded. At the same time, the separation the points M and N must be likewise great (for example, one km) in order to obtain differences potential which are not too small; the measurement of potential differences across MN is then difficult because of the presence of parasitic potentials, due to a flow of telluric currents in fourth, and the order of greatness of these currents may exceed the quantities to be measured.

The largest deposits of chromite in the United States occur in tabular layers in the lower part of the Stillwater Complex, Montana. Nearly 900,000 long tons of chromite concentrates have been produced from mines and mills in this area, and reserves equivalent to more than 2,500,000 long tons of Cr2O3 remain in the ground. Layered concentrations of chromite (known as chromitite zones) occur only within olivine-rich layers of the Peridotite member of the Ultramafic zone of the Stillwater. As many as thirteen chromitite zones, lying conformably one above another, have been found, but only five of them are thick enough to be of any conceivable economic interest, and only two of them have been mined to date. Individual chromitite zones can be recognized by their distinctive internal character and by their stratigraphic position in the Peridotite member. The chemical composition of chromite varies consistently between and within the different chromitite zones. The zones range in thickness from about an inch to more than 12 feet, and the Cr2O3, content of their chromite ranges from 36.6 to 49.2 weight per cent. In any given area, the G chromitite zone is the thickest, but the chromite of the H chromitite zone has the highest grade. Laterally, the thickness of the chromitite zones is related to the thickness of the Peridotite member; in general all are thicker in the eastern part of the Stillwater than in the western part.

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Staunton, on Monday evening, May 30th, in the Opera House. Major Jed. Hotchkiss, Chairman of the Committee of Reception, called the meeting to order and introduced Mayor Balthis, who spoke a few words of welcome to the members present, and then introduced the Hon. A. H. H. Stuart. Mr. Stuart in addressing a formal welcome to the Institute to the " little city of the mountains," spoke of the value of the services of the mining engineer in developing the mineral wealth of Virginia and in solving the problems of her geological history. Mr. Metcalf, President of the Institute, replied on behalf of the Institute to the cordial welcome of the mayor and Mr. Stuart, and then read an inaugural address on Force. At the conclusion of the President's address the following papers were read The Electrolytic Determination of Copper and the Formation and Composition of so-called Allotropic Copper, by J. B. Anna, Ohio, at the junction of Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee arches, has been the site of repeated and sometimes damaging earthquakes. As part of a seismicity investigation near-surface (0.15-1 m depth) overcoring strain measurements were conducted in four limestone and dolomite quarries surrounding Anna, the results of which suggest a complicated regional stress pattern, with changes in the maximum horizontal stress direction from N45ºE to N15ºW. Since such abrupt stress fluctuations are rather atypical in the Midwest and since the reliability of near-surface tests in defining regional stress had not been established, we decided to remeasure the stresses at the same locations but at greater depths (0-200 m) using the hydrofracturing method. Owing to the weak horizontal bedding planes of the Silurian shaly limestones and shaly dolomites and the relatively shallow depths, many of the tests yielded horizontal fractures, providing information only on the vertical principal stress (-0.029 MPa/m depth). However, sufficient tests in each of three testholes resulted in vertical hydrofractures to enable the calculation of all three principal stresses. Within 50-170 m depth the horizontal stresses in all three quarries appear to belong to a uniform regional Stress field defined by the following relations: [']Hmin = 5.1 + 0.014 D; [0] Hmax = 10.1 + 0.014 D, where D is depth in meters. The direction of [O]Hmax within 50-170 m depth is uniform at N70°E (±15º). The hydro- fracturing results obtained at Anna, Ohio are in agreement with the prevailing stress regime in the midcontinent both with respect to magnitudes and directions. The results suggest a possible thrust mechanism for a proposed NW-SE fault along which most of the earthquake epicenters have been located, and a left lateral strike-slip at greater depths. THE Lehigh Valley Section is planning with a num-ber of other organizations a three-day conference, April 25, 26 and 27, with field visits to cement, slate and steel plants in the vicinity of Easton, Pa. W. B. Plank is chairman and D. Knickerbocker Boyd is sec-retary. Headquarters will be at Hotel Easton. Wednesday' will be cement day. In the forenoon A. S. T. M. Committee D-16 will meet and after luncheon the delegates will visit the Martin Creek plants of the Alpha Portland Cement Co. An evening dinner and general session on cement is being arranged. Thursday morning will be devoted to a technical ses-sion on slate, and the breaking of ground for the new John Markel mining building at Lafayette College. After luncheon various slate quarries will be inspected, the visitors being guests of the companies. In the eve-ning there will be a conference dinner at Hotel Easton with a number of distinguished visitors. Friday will be given over to steel and will include a visit to Lehigh University, an inspection of the plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corp., and a luncheon as guests of the latter.

The new Ceramic Engineering Building of the University of Illinois is to be formally dedicated on Nov. 20 and 21. The occasion will be made one of great interest to the clay-workers of the country. It is expected that the exercises will be attended by many representatives of the architectural, structural, mining, geological, chemical, and manufacturing interests. In connection with the dedication exercises, an industrial conference will be -held, in which a number of topics of current interest to the ceramic engineer, the clay-worker and the manufacturer will be discussed by well-known experts. : The number of students registered in the College of Engineering of the University of Illinois eleven days after the beginning of registration - for the new year, is as follows: Architecture, 116; Architectural Engineering, 167; Ceramic Engineering, 46; Civil Engineering, 190; Electrical Engineering, 266; Mechanical Engineering, 273; Mining Engineering, 25; Municipal and Sanitary Engineering, 26; Railway Engineering, 34; total, 1,143. The enrollment of students in the whole University, not including the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry and the School of Pharmacy, which are located in Chicago, is 5,21.4.

In most mineral enterprises, what is the progress, and shift in responsibilities, as the young engineer advances in the corporation? You are all familiar with the normal pattern-in mine production from level boss, to shift boss, to superintendent to manager; in milling from test engineer, to shift boss, to foreman, to superintendent and then manager; in engineering from surveying on to Chief Engineer; and all then aspire to the corporation presidency. Note the shift-from purely technical jobs, say in the first five to ten years in the profession, to administrative positions for 30 to 40 years. What is the average preparation given to mineral engineering students, who can look forward to about 30 years of administrative work? From the catalogs of 21 institutions, offering 36 curricula of four years length, in mining and/or metallurgy, requiring the equivalent of about 150 to 160 semesterhours for graduation, the following results were obtained: Average number of semester hours of economics, 3 hr. Range of requirements, 0 to 8 hr. Thirteen curricula do not require any economics. Accounting and business law, average: 1 semester hr, 26 curricula do not require business law or accounting.

Coal and Coke were appointed, the personnel of which is shown in another part of this Bulletin. The President was authorized to appoint a Committee on Welfare with J. Parke Channing as Chairman. W. P. Cutter, Librarian of the United Engineering Societies' Library, was appointed a representative of the Institute on-the Committee oh Classification of Engineering Knowledge to co-operate with similar committees of other engineering societies. A vote of thanks was extended-to Edward B. Sturgis for his excellent work in arranging for the Annual Dinner. in February, of this year. The suns of $57.30 was appropriated to the New' York Section. It was resolved that in response to the courteous invitation from 36 members of the Institute in Arizona and the neighborhood, the 1916 summer meeting of the Institute be held in Arizona.

Single crystals of iron, copper, and a Cu-7 wt pct A1 alloy were pulled through conical dies to simulate the constraint in a polycrystalline aggregate undergoing axisymmetric reduction. With Taylor-type hardening, dependence of the drawing stress, od, on the Taylor orientation factor, M, is predictable from the polycrystal stress-strain curve; in particular, for a power-law relationship, it should follow that d log od/d log M = (1 + n). A first-order agreement with analysis was found in the data from iron. For copper, the implied n from the observed d log od/d l°g M was -0, while for Cu-7Al it was negative. The trend was in the direction of random polycrystal behavior. Thus the idea of hardening only in response to the amount of prior slip loses validity as stacking fault energy (SFE) is lowered. Two possible explanations have been suggested: as stacking fault ribbons are widened, barriers from dislocation reactions become increasingly effective in dispersing slip and reducing the orientation dependence of the total glide strain dm that appears in alternatively, or conjointly, the polyslip shear stress, 7, acquires an orientation dependence of a kind which has the same leveling effect on M. The problem of relating the strain hardening of polycrystalline material to that of an isolated single crystal is still largely unsolved. In a new experimental approach from recent work, single crystals of different orientations have been deformed under the constraints found in an aggregate while measuring their deformation resistance. Procedures have involved drawing cylindrical crystals through conical dies1 and compressing slab-shaped crystals in plane strain.2'3 Predictions for the outcome of such experiments were made first by Taylor~ and later, in more general form, by Bishop and Hill.5'6 Taylor's example was the axisymmetric extension of an fcc crystal slipping on the usual {111}(110) systems or, equivalently, a bcc crystal undergoing 'kestricted" slip on {110}(111). In his solution, the deformation work supplied was equated to that dissipated internally in slip on all active systems. With o the single applied tensile stress, dc the resulting axial strain, and dyT the total glide strain on systems operating at resolved shear stress, 7: The orientation dependence of M was found by minimizing dyT for each orientation while activating five independent systems, Fig. l(a).? The Bishop and Hill analysis, based on a principle of maximum work, leads to essentially the same conclusion; the need for at least five active systems is recognized in the finding that either six or eight are actually brought into operation. The mean value from the entire stereo-graphic triangle in either case is M - 3.06. More recently, Hutchinson8 made a Taylor-type analysis for pencil glide in a bcc structure, from which piehlerg prepared Fig. l(b) as the counterpart in Fig. l(a); here M = 2.75. This paper presents the historical trend and de- fines the causes of drilling cost escalation in the Gulf of Mexico during the 1970's. The three major components of escalation are: 1) inflation, 2) supply-demand imbalance (demand pull) and 3) decreases in drilling efficiency. The decade was divided into three periods. During each period one component of escalation was responsible for most of the rise in costs. From 1970 through 1973 only inflation pushed costs upward. During 1974 and 1975 a supply- demand imbalance caused most of the escalation. Since 1975, decreases in drilling efficiency have produced the major component of escalation. During any one year or period of years, the sum of the three components will give the total escalation rate. The reasons why different components contribute more toward escalation during certain years than others are shown by following the timing of oil and gas price increases, the overall quality of the acreage offered each year in offshore lease sales and the resulting drilling activity.
