A Discussion of the Paper of H. O. Hofman, R. P. Reynolds and A. E. Wells, read by title at the London Meeting, July, 1906 ; presented at the New York Meeting, April, 1907, and printed in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 13, January, 1907, pp. 37 to 52. GEORGE A. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. Uranium mining and milling are rather new industries in Wyoming and South Dakota, but, in the past 15 years, ore valued at more than $400,000,000 has been mined and milled in the region. The major uranium deposits are in structural and/ or erosional basins or on the flanks of uplifts. The principal host rocks are medium- to coarse-grained sandstones that were deposited in continental or brackish-water environments and were derived in large part from the granitic cores of the uplifts and the sedimentary rocks that flank the cores. The ages of the host rocks range from Cretaceous to Miocene, but more than 95 per cent of the known reserves in the region are in rocks of early Eocene age. The bulk of the ore in the region is unoxidized and lies below the water table; some oxidized ore has been mined in the Powder River Basin and Black Hills districts. The unoxidized ore comprises pyrite, uraninite and/ or coffinite, marcasite, hematite, jordisite(?), and selenium. Minerals in the oxidized ore include hydrous uranium carbonates, phosphates, and sulfates and hydrous uranium and/ or vanadium silicates. The deposits are in the form of ore rolls that contain from a few hundred to a few hundred thousand tons of ore, ranging in grade from 0.1 per cent to 1.0 per cent U3O8. The rolls are at the margins of large tabular bodies of sandstone that has been altered by the orebearing solutions. The deposits are believed to have resulted from the interaction of an alkaline; oxidizing, ore-bearing ground water and a reducing environment. Exploration guides include the spatial relations of ore to altered sandstone, favorable lithology in the host rock, the content of certain elements and/ or compounds in ground water, and the relation of deposits to major paleodrainages.

MAGNETITE minim and milling in the Eastern States continued at a low rate of production during 1934. The year's output was 50 per cent greater than in 1933, but when one considers that the 1934 output was only 1.5 per cent of the combined plant capacities of the eastern iron ore producers, the far-reaching effect of unrestricted importation of foreign ores and pig iron is apparent. The Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co., at Lyon Mountain, N. Y., produced 1.00,136 gross tons of concentrated and sintered ore up to Nov.1, when operations were closed clown. At Mineville, the Witherbee, Sherman Corp. confined its productivity to part-time operation of its Old Bed and Harmony mines front May 1 Lo Oct. 27. This period of activity was brought about by the use of Mineville ores in the recent blast made by the Green Island furnace at Troy, N. Y. The Forest of Dean property at Fort Montgomery, N, Y., has continued closed down during the year.

The final session was held on Thursday morning. An abstract of the discussion will be transmitted to each delegate present. The topics included: Student relations. Section operation, membership, employment, MINING AND METALLURGY, a new nonmetallic minerals Division. licensing of engineers, and increased allotments of money to Local Sections. Some of the Sections felt that the present limit of $250 allotted to them - from the national treasury was insufficient to carry on their activities, and that this maximum should he increased. A resolution to this effect was passed for transmission to the Board of Directors.

THE art of melting nonferrous metals, in smelting, casting, and in compounding of alloys, is highly dependent on a knowledge of the temperature of the metal. This knowledge may reside in the experience and judgment of the melter, or it may be based on measurement by suitable instruments. It-is our purpose to discuss briefly the instruments available for such measurements, and more at length the present, practice in molten metals, without recommendation. In the limits of time and space allotted, we can do little more than mention the available methods of measurement that are directly applicable in this field. In the 1939 edition of the Metals Handbook, issued by the American Society for Metals, pages 285-310, there is a more extensive discussion of pyrometry than can be attempted here, which should be referred to for details we must omit. For reasons that will appear, thermoelectric pyrometry will constitute the major portion of our discussion of the subject, only limited attention being given to radiation or optical pyrometry. METHODS OF MEASUREMENT THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY A thermocouple consists of two dissimilar wires, or a wire inside a tube of a dissimilar material, joined together at one end, which is placed in the region or medium where the temperature is to be measured, while the other ends are connected through suitable lead wires to a voltage-measuring device, which may be a millivoltmeter or a potentiometer. An electromotive force is generated in the circuit, which is proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot junction and the junctions of the lead wires to the measuring instrument. If this latter temperature is maintained constant, the e.m.f. measured varies only with the temperature of the hot junction. Every thermoelectric pyrometer is calibrated for a particular cold-junction temperature such as 0°F., 32°F. or 75°F., but usually it is more practical to compensate instrumentally over the probable range of cold-junction temperatures than to maintain the junction at the particular temperature for which the instrument was calibrated. Thermocouple Materials Only a very few pairs of metals are in frequent use for pyrometric measurements. The most generally used are iron-constantan for temperatures up to 1500°F. in oxidizing and up to 1800°F. in reducing atmospheres and chromel-alumel, which may be used in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 2400°F. for intermittent service. The accuracy of the latter deteriorates rapidly at temperatures above 2200°F. Platinum vs. platinum-rhodium thermocouples may be used up to a temperature of 3000°F , but they are easily contaminated by slow absorption of

An hcp phase may be induced by cold working the ß&apos; phase of the Ag-Zn system. This phase reverts to ß&apos; on subsequent aging. No phase change occurs on cold working the o phase, but ß&apos; is formed when the deformed alloy is subsequently aged at room temperature. It is concluded that for alloys near 50 at pct Zn the ordered bcc ß&apos; phase is the equilibrium structure at room temperature. WhEN the disordered bcc ß phase of the Ag-Zn system is cooled to temperatures below 258o to 274oC, it transforms to a complex hexagonal phase <o.1,2 The nature of the o ß=o transformation has been the subject of some discussion,2&apos;3 and the structure of o has been described in detail.&apos; The latter phase appears to be stable on aging at room temperature but decomposes following cold work. When alloys containing approximately 50 at. pct Zn are rapidly quenched from the 0 phase field, the ß ? o transformation may be suppressed; but the ß phase undergoes an ordering reaction (ß ? ß&apos;). The ß&apos; structure may also be obtained as a result of cold working and aging at room temperature.4 Kitchingman, Hall, and Buckley4 have suggested that the decomposition of (o following cold work proceeds in two stages, (o ? ß followed by ß ? ß&apos;, but did not confirm this by experiment. When the ordered &apos; phases in the systems Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 are cold worked, they become unstable and transform to a close-packed hexagonal phase (( ) indicating that when order is destroyed in a ß&apos; structure the close-packed hexagonal phase may in many cases be more stable. It thus became of interest to study more closely the effect of cold work and annealing on the stability of both the ß&apos; and o phases in a Ag-50 at. pct Zn alloy. Predetermined weights of spectroscopically-pure Ag and Zn, supplied by Johnson and Matthey, were melted and cast under 1/2 atm of He in transparent vycor tubing. The ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 630°C and quenched into iced brine. Since mechanical polishing was found to induce a phase change, sections were first polished at room temperature, sealed in tubes under 1/2 atm of He, reannealed for several days at 630o or 200°C and then quenched into iced brine. Sections of the alloy thus prepared were found to be homogeneous when examined under the microscope. The sample quenched from 630°C (ß -phase region) was pink in color, whereas the sample quenched from 200°C (o-phase region) was silver. The latter sample showed the characteristic hexagonal anisotropy when examined under polarized light. Filings of the alloy were examined at room temperature, after various heat treatments, using an RCA-Siemens Crystalloflex IV diffractometer with filtered CuKa radiation. The X-ray reflections from flat powder specimens quenched from 630o and 200°C and sieved through 230 mesh were recorded graphically at a scanning speed of 1/2 deg per min. The resultant patterns are shown in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) and may be identified as those of the 8&apos; and <02 structures respectively. The lattice parameter of the ß&apos; phase was determined as 3.1566Å.* This value compares very well withthatto be expected for a 50 at. pct Zn alloy from the data of Owen and Edmunds? and indicates that no loss of Zn occurred during casting. In order to study the effect of cold work upon the ß&apos; and o phases, filings made at room temperature and sieved through 230 mesh were mounted immediately in the diffractometer-i.e., without a strain-relief anneal. Changes in structure on subsequent aging were followed by scanning repeatedly over the regions of the low index reflections of the ß&apos; and o structures-i.e. , 28 from 35 to 44 deg. Immediately after filing the 8&apos; specimen, additional diffraction peaks were observed in the low-index region of the pattern, as shown in Fig. 1(c). These additional peaks do not coincide with those of the o structure, Fig. l(b), but may be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2), and (10.1) reflections of an hcp phase (<) with nearly ideal axial ratio. However, this hexagonal phase appears to be very unstable since within a very short time at room temperature it reverts back to the ordered ß&apos; phase, the reversion being complete within seven hours. The 5 ? ß&apos; reversion reaction is, therefore, very similar to those already reported in Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 7&apos;alloys. The action of filing caused the deformed surface of the originally pink ingot to become silver in color, indi-cating that the ( phase possesses similar reflecting properties to the o phase. The effects of using surfactant solutions while diamond drilling in amygdaloidal basalt of the Upper Michigan copper mining district were investigated. Nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactant solutions, all biodegradable, were tested with size AX surface-set bits mounted on a drill instrumented for continuous recording of thrust, rotational speed, and torque levels. Water flow and penetrations rates were also recorded. A drilling study was carried out, testing two rotational speed levels, two diamond bit grade levels, and four flushing agents (including water as a control). Comparison of all low-speed/high-thrust groups of tests shows that the non-ionic surfactant produced a 35% overall average increase in penetration rate over water, the anionic a 29% increase, and the cationic a 28% increase. These increases in, penetration rates resulted in a 22 to 26% reduction in cost over flushing with water alone. With the high-speed/low-thrust combination, the surfactants produced less benefits in penetration rate increases over water (14% increase for nonionic, 14% decrease for anionic, and 2% decrease for cationic type). Particle size analyses were run on drill cuttings produced by the three surfactant solutions and by water. All surfactant solutions showed a 20 to 50% increase in solids content over that of water alone. Since flushing rates were constant, these increases in solids content agree well with the penetration rate changes. The diamonds were recovered from each bit by matrix dissolution, and bit wear was measured in terms of total loss of weight. Flushing with surfactant solutions showed a savings in bit wear in most cases. The drill team noted also that surfactant flushing improved recovery of drill core by allowing easier removal of the core from the barrel.

IN recent years an ever increasing amount of interest has been directed toward research studying the principles and various applications of sonic and supersonic waves. Though still in their early stages of practical development, sonic vibrations are already used in the emulsification and degasification of liquids. Metals exposed to sonic or ultrasonic vibrations while solidifying show a considerable amount of grain refinement. Often sound waves are applied instead of radiography to test engineering materials for internal cracks and flaws.1 In the field of pure research these waves are used in dispersion and also in coagulation of particles or liquids in gaseous or, under certain conditions, in other liquid systems. In the settling and thickening of slurries considerable time is necessary to compress the solid particles and to squeeze out the liquid to obtain as low a dilution (liquid to solid ratio) as possible. Various methods have been developed to increase the amount of coagulation of the very fine solids (colloidal or semicolloidal) and to shorten the over-all time. The addition of small amounts of electrolytes and the warming of the suspension represent merely the more important techniques. Some of the effects of supersonic vibrations have been reported previously.2,6 From preliminary studies, therefore, it was hoped that by application of sonic vibrations it would be possible to reduce the time required to thicken such materials to a specific dilution, as well as to thicken to lower ultimate dilutions than could be obtained by quiescent settling alone. By increasing the volume thickened per unit time-i.e., improving the plant efficiency-great savings in equipment and time would be obtained for industrial processes. Also, faster settling rates should result if coagulation of particles could be increased. Experiments have been conducted for a period of several months in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory to study the effect of sonic vibrations on settling of particles of different sizes and concentrations. APPARATUS The sedimentation apparatus used in these experiments is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. The essential features are the stationary field coil and the movable voice coil. Both windings are placed around a solid iron core. A leather diaphragm connected to the steel frame holds the voice coil in place. A brass rod is fastened to the voice coil with a metal disk connected to the other end. This disk is sealed to the lucite cylinder with a flexible rubber diaphragm. The lucite tube is 17 in. long; its inner diameter is 2 ½in. and the wall thickness is ¼ in. The tube is calibrated on the outside in 10 c.c. divisions for a total of 1000 cubic centimeters.

C. G. McLACHLAN*-I have read this paper with considerable interest and wish to congratulate the authors on the care with which they carried out their experiments and for the detailed sizing data they have presented. 011 the other hand I do not feel that these data establish their contention that "with other factors the same, the work accomplished in a fine crushing rod mill is directly proportional to the rotating speed." My reason for making this statement is that their conclusion is based on the percentage of minus 65 mesh material produced at each of the speeds at which their tests were run. The rod mill is, however, not a fine grinding machine and therefore figures based on minus 65 mesh production are figures outside the range at which it operates to best advantage. Further, if rod mill performance is to be judged on the production of such material it should have been established that a rod mill will produce it as effectively as a ball mill. To check this last point I have gone over some of the rod and ball mill grind-ing figures for our Waite-Atnulet operation and find that the ball mill at that property produces more minus 65 mesh material per horsepower than the rod mill. Moreover, this comparison is even more favorable to the ball mill if it is limited to minus 100 mesh production. It therefore seems to me that the most satisfactory basis on which to try to com-pare the performance of the rod mill in the present case is by taking a weighted average of all the new surface produced per horsepower. W. H. Coghill3 has published data which can be applied to the sizing figures presented by the authors, and if this is done the units of new surface per horsepower produced in the Tennessee tests are as follows: Admittedly the increment of increase in new surface per horsepower shown in the foregoing figures is not great, but its trend is nevertheless definitely in favor of slower speed operation, for the conditions under which these particular tests were run. I also feel that some information regarding liner contour should have been given as I think it will be found that a mill which is equipped with liners which lift the rod load can be run at a slower speed than a mill in which the liners are comparatively smooth. J. F. MYERS and F. M. LEWIS (authors&apos; reply)—The position taken by Mr. McLachlan is to be respected even though we are all aware of the faults of surface considerations. As he points out. the increment of increase is very small. It is so small in fact that for all practical purposes it does not conflict with the conclusions of the paper. The authors appreciate Mr. McLachlan&apos;s comprehensive study of the data.

The profitability of miscible flooding in a hypothetical target oilfield is examined. The major costs, including Windfall Prof it Tax, are identified and their re1ative importance are discussed. The sensitivity of profit to important physical and economic variables is evaluated and discussed, including variance in oil recovery, oil price, injectant requirements, injectant cost, and capital requirements. Economic sensitivities to important development and operating decisions such as timing, Spacing, Slug size, and gas recycling are also analyzed. The Windfall Profit Tax (WPT) as it applies to gas miscible EOR projects is reviewed. The effect of WPT on each of the various project cases is analyzed and the effect of reduced WPT on remaining production from existing operations is evaluated. Tax implications are compared for integrated vs. "independent" controlled projects and the alternative of expensing vs. capitalizing tertiary injectants is also evaluated. The impact of the Net Income Limitation in reducing WPT. during early and late project life is determined and discussed.

J. H. HEGINBOTHAM, a, metallurgist of the General Engineering Co., talked on "Current Milling Practice at Kirkland Lake," at the December meeting of the Utah Section. The ore is enough alike through the whole district so that some generalizations and comparisons may be made. The question as to whether or not the flotation process should be used in the flowsheet for extracting gold by cyanide solutions is still being vigorously debated, and it will seemingly need some years for a definite answer to be given. Most of the gold is either free, though much of it is finely dispersed in quartz, or occurs with pyrite. At times there may be 2 per cent of telluride compounds in the ore, but the amount of gold telluride present is small and has not been definitely established. It has been shown by Dr. Haultain and others that though gold tellurides may be so finely disseminated that it is necessary to grind the ore exceedingly fine, the compounds themselves are not difficultly soluble. (An increase in temperature helps to dissolve tellurides, and also to settle pulps.) It is likely that if the ore were ground through 400 mesh, practically all of the gold would be soluble. As it is, with 96 to 98 per cent of the ore ground to minus 200 mesh, and some 70 per cent minus 325, the cost of

IT is the purpose of this paper to present a limited amount of experimental data obtained on the Charpy impact machine. Several concrete examples will be given showing the relation existing between the results obtained upon the Charpy impact machine and the behavior of the parts tested when in service. Although it is pointed out by G. Charpy and A. Cornu-Thenard1 that it is first necessary to determine a satisfactory working process before studying the correlation between the results of these tests and the behavior of the parts tested in service, this ideal course cannot be strictly adhered to. If a certain part repeatedly fails in service and the available tests give no indication of its cause, advantage must be taken of any possible means that will solve the problem; therefore, even though the reliability of the results obtained by the Charpy impact machine have been questioned by many, it was necessary to use this instrument without giving careful consideration to its possible sources of error. It would seem that the conclusions arrived at by Charpy and Cornu-Thénard justify the assumption that the precision obtained by this machine is comparable to that obtained by, the other more common forms of testing. The second general conclusion arrived at by them, namely, that the impact test upon notching does not offer any direct correlation to the ordinary tests, is also borne out by many hundred determinations made in the laboratories at Watertown Arsenal. This statement, however, should be qualified as follows: Other ordinary tests include the static tensile test from bars taken in a longitudinal .direction and the Brinell hardness. The author agrees that no law is yet known for the computation of the energy absorbed in the rupture of bars of the same material but of different dimensions. Although Charpy and Cornu-Thénard do not refer in their valuable article to the use of the Charpy machine in industrial practice, it should be stated that this instrument has been in constant use in the laboratory at Watertown Arsenal for several

In a series of charts this paper presents the composition of all gas mixtures, composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, which at temperatures from 1000° to 1800°F are in equilibrium with (1) austenite of various carbon contents, (2) iron and iron carbide, (3) graphite, (4) iron and its oxide. THIS paper presents the results of calculations made to determine the proportions of CO, CO2, CH4, H2, H2O and N2 in gas mixtures which, at temperatures from 1000" to 1800°F, satisfy, individually, the following conditions: (1) equilibrium with carbon steel of specified carbon content throughout the stable 7 iron region; (2) equilibrium with iron and iron carbide, both above and below the eutectoid temperature; (3) equilibrium with graphite; (4) equilibrium with iron and its oxide. From these data a new type of chart has been prepared which permits one to determine, from a room-temperature analysis of the furnace gas in question, the effect of the gas upon the steel at furnace temperature. Thus a guide is provided as to the carbon content which will result and as to the possibility of oxidation or sooting. All of the atmospheres commonly used in the commercial heat treatment of steel are composed of some or all of the simple constituents CO, CO2, CH4, H2, H2O and N2, and also in some cases oxygen or higher hydrocarbons. As the gas mixture is heated certain alterations in the proportions of the constituents take place, and at the temperature of the furnace the composition is, in general, not at all that of the entering gas. If equilibrium in the gas phase is presumed a calculation involving the use of certain fundamental data predicts for a certain temperature the carburizing, decarburizing, or sooting characteristics of a given atmosphere, and, upon the additional assumption of equilibrium between gas and metal, also the oxidizing ability of the gas and the ultimate carbon content of the steel. The extent to which these predictions are fulfilled will depend upon how closely the assumptions of equilibrium are realized in any particular case. Although at lower temperatures equilibrium is often not reached, there is considerable evidence indicating that above about 1000°F the approach to equilibrium in the gas phase is generally substantially complete, particularly in the vicinity of the steel which acts as a powerful catalyst in promoting reactions in the gas phase. The extent of the gas-metal reactions is commonly affected essentially by the sojourn at temperature; equilibrium with respect to carbon, for example, is accomplished simply by continuing the treatment long enough. However close the approximation of equilibrium may be in any instance, the above mentioned calculation indicates the condition of the steel at equilibrium, and at the present time this is the only basis of control of a furnace atmosphere. The effect at elevated temperature of a gas of a certain composition at room temperature upon a given steel has customarily been judged by first calculating from gas equilibrium constants the proportions of the gas constituents at the temperature of the steel, then comparing certain of these with the proportions known to be in carbon or oxygen equilibrium. This process is tedious and time-consuming, in particular because the calculation generally involves a series of successive approximations; and since some knowledge and familiarity with this type of computation are required, not everyone needing the information has been, in the past, in a position to obtain it. The careful work of Gross and Zimmerleyl has established the fact that the energy actually used in grinding is proportional to the new surface produced. This confirmation of Rittinger&apos;s law was made by crushing quartz in a frictionless drop-weight machine and determining the surface of the quartz by its rate of solution in hydrofluoric acid. The details of this procedure have been described adequately elsewhere and need not be repeated here. The resultant data furnish the only available basis for comparing accurately the efficiency of grinding machines. This method is so cumbersome experimentally that it has been little used. As an alternative all sorts of approximations have been proposed. The best of these is complete size analysis by sieving and elutria-tion. Such procedure is very lengthy and difficult to carry out accurately. Furthermore, any sizing method becomes very inaccurate for determining surface with very fine sizes where the ratio of surface to volume becomes very large. To avoid the lengthy and difficult technique of elutriation it has been proposed to estimate the size distribution below 200 mesh from various probability formulas. Such a procedure is at best an engineering approximation; at worst it is a mere guess. Some time ago Dr. V. H. Gottschalk2 found that the coercive forces of magnetite powders were directly proportional to the surface area, regardless of size distribution. It was at once apparent that this furnished a method for determining grinding efficiency quickly and accurately. The only requirement was a single determination of the relation between the work input of the Gross-Zimmerley drop-weight machine and the coercive force of the resultant crushed magnetite. My function here today is not to illuminate any particular subject but simply to welcome you to Penn State and to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Our college is, of course, dedicated to the same thing to which most of you have dedicated your lives--the exploration of the earth, the extraction of materials from it, and the production of useful things from those materials. We have about 2,000 students engaged in studying in preparation for service in these activities at the present time. Like other colleges of our type, we&apos;ve undergone a great expansion just at a time when university budgets are contracting. This creates an interesting situation as to how we can best use our resources. This, of course, is the thing a lot of you are going to be talking about here--how we can best use the world&apos;s resources. As you well know, the expectations of the people of the world are rising, and, with the numbers of people increasing and with finite resources, there never was a time in history when it was more important that we become "quantitative" in our discovery, estimation, extraction, and utilization of those resources. I think it is admirable and very timely that you are gathered together to discuss your various approaches to this particu¬lar problem of quantifying and making most efficient use of the resources of the world. Yours is sort of a hidden profession, not just because you actually go underground, but because the public in general is not aware of where the materials they use come from. If you are successful in your professions the public will continue to be unaware. Only if you fail will your essential function become patently obvious. I wish you success both in your professional pursuits and in this particular meeting.
