Salley—The authors and ourselves" independently came to similar conclusions both as to the value of tracer methods for the study of flotation and the general nature of collector-mineral interaction. The dodecylamine-quartz system appears to be simpler than the dithiophosphate-galena one, and the results therefore appear clearer. It is evident from a comparison of the two papers, however, that care must be used in extending the results to other more complicated systems. In the case of dodecylamine-quartz, the possible influence of micelle formation is of interest. There is no a priori reason why complete monolayer formation should necessarily occur at the concentration for micelle formation, since sorption depends on the nature of the substrate as well as on the properties of the solute in solution which alone determine micelle formation. Indeed, the fact that the onset of increased adsorption, point B in fig. 2, occurs at a concentration one tenth the critical value for micelles might imply that micelle formation does not have an influence. Interestingly enough, the data may be handled by the methods used for multilayer adsorption of gases on surfaces. Thus, if the amount adsorbed is plotted versus concentration, a sigmoid type curve is obtained, similar in form to a so-called Type I1 isotherm13 generally attributed to multimolecular adsorption. A monolayer value of about 0.12 mg per g may be estimated from the knee of this isotherm. On the other hand, if a plot is made according to the multilayer gas equation for adsorption to an unrestricted number of layers, eq 38,13 assuming the critical micelle concentration as the saturation concentration, the data above 120 mg per liter fall on a straight line from which a monolayer adsorption of 0.3 mg per g results. These considerations suggest that the monolayer may occupy an area somewhat less than the geometric value of 0.4 mg per g, and that micelle formation may indeed be a factor in the adsorption. the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. T. M. Morris (author's reply)—Mr. Kellogg puts forth a reasonable criticism of some of the terminology used in the paper. I agree that the term "static contact angle" may be misleading. Substitution of the term "supporting angle" or "vector angle" may be more suitable. F. X. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer's understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. This distortion produces a force that acts in opposition to the force of adhesion between the bubble and particle. Hence, at maximum contact angle, the force of adhesion between bubble and particle is at a minimum for static conditions. However, when the size of bubble is increased, the size of particle remaining the same (and all other conditions remaining the same), the contact angle decreases, the distortion of the bubble decreases and the force in opposition to adherence of bubble and particle also decreases. Thus, there is stronger attachment between bubble and particle. When this situation is applied to actual flotation conditions, it is doubtful that it has any significance. The reason is that the bubbles are normally so much larger than the particles, that in substantially all cases, it is probable that negligible distortion of the bubble takes place. In table IV, the author makes computations for bubbles from 0.50 to 2 mm diam. This is from 0.02 in. to 0.08 in. Certainly the bubbles generated in a flotation machine are far larger than this. The surfaces of the author's bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan's motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles. The nitrogen contents of seven specimens of iron and steel were determined by the three methods. Good agreement won generally observed between the results of the isotope -dilution and Kjeldahl determinations, tltzts establishing the reliability of the isotope -dilutzon technique. For some specimens, the vacuum-fusion values at 1650 °C were lower than the corresponding Kjeldahl values by up to 0.0015 pct absolute. These differences were eliminated for a specimen of "pure" iron by performing the vacuum-fusion analyses at 2100 ° to 2240 °C. The reason for this relatively high temperature required m the vaczium-fusion analyses is discussed. ThE determination of nitrogen in iron and steel has been the subject of numerous investigations and a concise review of the extensive literature in this field has recently appeared.' Two methods of analysis are most commonly employed, the vacuum -fusion and the chemical or Kjeldahl method. Except in special cases where the presence of certain alloying elements may present difficulties, both methods are generally regarded as applicable, although the vacuum-fusion method is more sensitive and is often preferred for samples of very low-nitrogen content. The method of isotope dilution, first employed for the determination of gases in metals by Kirshenbaum and Grosse,2 has recently been applied to the determination of nitrogen in iron and steel.3,4 The method is attractive in that it does not require the quantitative extraction of gas from the metal specimen. Staley and Svec3 modified the standard Kjeldahlpro-cedure by introducing, along with the steel sample, a measured amount of ammonium sulfate enriched in the isotope 15N. The nitrogen content was obtained by measuring the isotopic ratio 15N/14N in the resultant solution. The technique involved the distillation of nitrogen as ammonia from alkaline solution and subsequent oxidation of NH4+ in the distillate to gaseous nitrogen. The results for iron and steel samples of commercial origin were often in reasonable agreement with values quoted by the suppliers, although occasional marked discrepancies were observed, particularly with the results of vacuum-fusion analyses. Preliminary work in this laboratory4 on the determination of nitrogen by isotope-dilution in the gas phase yielded results for three samples which were significantly higher than the values obtained by vacuum-fusion. The present paper describes an extension of this work to a wider variety of samples. Analytical results by the Kjeldahl method are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL The technique employed for the isotope-dilution determinations was similar to that described elsewhere.4 Several minor modifications were made to the apparatus. These included the use of molybdenum instead of platinum-rhodium suspending wires when crucibles were degassed at temperatures above 1600°C. The circulatory system used previously for converting CO to CO2 was replaced by a single chamber, the walls of which were cooled directly in liquid nitrogen. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which had been recently calibrated and, as in the previous study, were minimum values obtained by sighting on the center bottom of the crucible. Temperatures obtained by sighting on the interior walls were always higher by 100' to 130°C with the design of crucible employed. Flat-bottomed crucibles exhibited an even larger temperature difference. To check the efficiency with which crucibles were degassed in the isotope-dilution apparatus, several experiments were done in the vacuum-fusion apparatus, suitably modified4 for isotope-dilution studies. Faster pumping speeds and higher degassing temperatures were possible, the latter due to the use of a generator with a higher power output (10 Kva at 398 kc per sec). In these experiments the combustion of CO was omitted and a correction4 was made for the contribution of CO to the ion current at m/e 28, used in determining the isotopic ratio R = l5NP4N. THE solidus line above the solid solution field in the lead-antimony system was originally determined by Dean and his associates1 from heating curves. They did not regard this line as having been accurately fixed and in their more recent publications2 the curves drawn do not follow closely the original data. The precise location of the solidus line is of importance in the extrusion of lead-antimony cable sheath, as the temperature of the metal in this process must be less than the lowest temperature at which any part of the alloy in the lead-press charge becomes liquid. It is very desirable, however, to operate at as high a temperature as possible, as the rate of extrusion for a given pressure is approximately doubled for an increase of 10° C. in temperature. The precise location of this line is also important, in the investigation of ternary systems of lead, antimony and a third metal. For these reasons, and because of the differences reported in the literature, data were secured on the lead-antimony solidus line by the classical quenching-test procedure.

The rate of growth of "Fe4N" on a iron was measured by nitriding purified iron strips in flowing am -monia -hydrogen gas mixtures at 504" and 554°C. It is shown that a dense nitride layer is formed when a zone -refined iron is used in the experiments. With less pure iron, the nitride layer is found to be porous. Through theoretical treatment, the self-diffusivity of nitrogen is evaluated porn the parabolic rate constant, and found to be essentially independent of nitrogen actirlity, e.g., D* = 3.2 x l0-12 and 7.9x l0-12 sq cm per sec at 504" and 554?C. Some consideration is given to the mechanism of diffusion in the nitride phase. THERE is a great deal of background knowledge on the solubility and diffusivity of nitrogen in iron, and on the thermodynamics and crystallography of several phases in the Fe-N system. Although case-nitrided steels have many applications in practice, no work seems to have been done on the diffusivity of nitrogen in the iron nitride, ?', phase. The only work reported on the related subject of which the authors are aware is an investigation by Prenosil,1 who measured the growth rate of the e phase on iron by nitriding in ammonia-hydrogen gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTS Purified iron plates of approximate dimensions 1 by 0.5 by 0.03 cm were nitrided in flowing mixtures of ammonia and hydrogen, in a vertical furnace fitted with a gas-tight recrystallized alumina tube. After a specified time of reaction, the sample was cooled to room temperature by withdrawal to the water cooled top of the reaction tube. The furnace temperature was controlled electronically in the usual manner within *l°C; the temperature was measured using a calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. For each experiment the iron strip sample was cleaned with fine emery cloth and degreased with tri-chloroethylene prior to the experiment. The ammonia-hydrogen gas mixtures were prepared from anhydrous ammonia and purified hydrogen using constant pressure-head capillary flowmeters. The gas mixture flowed upward in the furnace with flow rate of 400 cc per min at stp. The composition of the gas mixture was checked by chemical analysis at regular intervals. In most cases, the compositions of the exit gas and metered input gas agreed within about 0.3 pct, indicating that cracking of ammonia did not pose a problem at the temperatures employed. Two series of experiments were carried out using two different types of purified iron samples. In the first series of experiments at 550°C, vacuum carbon deoxidized "Plastiron" was used. The main impurities present in this iron were, in ppm: 4043, 50-Cr, 20-Zr, 40-Mn, 20-P, 20-S, 20-C, 50-0, and 10-N. In these experiments the rate data were obtained by measuring the change in weight of the iron specimen suspended in the hot zone of the furnace by a platinum wire from a silica spring balance. The nitride layer formed in these experiments was found to be porous, particularly near the outer surface. In other experiments, high purity zone-refined iron (prepared in this laboratory) was used. The total impurity content of this iron was 30 ppm of which 20 ppm was Co + Ni, 4 ppm 0, other metallic impurities were less than 1 ppm. The zone-refined iron bar, -2.5 cm diam, was cold rolled to a thickness of about 0.03 cm and the specimens were prepared for the experiment as described earlier. After the nitriding experiment, the sample was copper plated electro-lytically and mounted in plastic for metallographic polishing. After polishing, the thickness of the ?' layer was measured using a metallographic microscope. The nitride layer formed on the zone-refined iron was essentially free of pores. RESULTS The different morphology of the nitride layers grown on "Plastiron" and zone-refined iron is shown in Fig. 1. Both samples were nitrided side by side for 55 hr. The holes in the less pure iron, Fig. l(a), are confined to a region about one half thickness from the outer surface. The dense layer grown on zone-refined iron, Fig. l(b), is thinner than the porous layer on the "Plastiron". The impurities in the iron are believed to be responsible for the formation of a porous nitride layer. The pore formation may be due to the high nitrogen pressures existing within the nitride layer, e.g., the equilibrium nitrogen pressure is 1.2 x l05 atm in the 38.6 pct NH3-61.4 pct H2 and 6.6 x l03 atm at the Fe-Fe4N interface at 554°C and 0.96 atm. It is possible that the oxide inclusions present in the electrolytic iron may facilitate the nuclea-tion of nitrogen gas bubbles within the nitride layer. Support for this reasoning is the fact that pores are only encountered in the outer range of the layer where nitrogen pressures are largest. The photomicrographs in Fig. 2 show the effect of reaction time on the thickness of the dense nitride layer formed on zone-refined iron. These sections are from samples nitrided in a stream of 29 pct NH3-71 pct H2 mixture at 554°C for 22, 70, and 255 hr. In all the sections examined the nitride-iron interface was noted to be rugged. The preparation of massive uranium metal containing very low concentrations of a number of light elements by bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium is described. Details of procedures are given for preparing high-purity ingredients for the bomb reduction. The as-reduced uranium metal contained, on the average, less than the following amounts of light element impurities, in ppm: Li, 0.1; Be, 0.1; B, 0.1; C, 25; 0, 70; Na, 1; Mg, 3; Al, 2; and Si, 7. Other impurities for which the metal was examined averaged, in ppm: Ca, < 10; V, < 10; Cr, 2; Mn, 6; Fe, 50; Co, < 5; Ni, 8; and Cu, 1. THE preparation of very high-purity uranium metal in massive form for research purposes is of great importance. Recently the kilogram-scale preparation of uranium metal containing less than 70 ppm of detected impurities was accomplished by Blumen-thal and coworkers by vacuum remelting of high-purity crystals of uranium obtained by fused salt electrolysis.1"3 Albert and coworkers4 have reported successful experiments in lowering the concentrations of certain impurity elements in uranium, notably iron, to a few ppm by the zone-melting method. The present paper describes the preparation of high-purity massive uranium metal by the bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium. Early in 1951 a program was undertaken at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to prepare uranium metal of very high purity with respect to a number of the light elements. The methods considered for this purpose were 1) bomb reduction of a uranium halide with calcium, 2) electrolysis of fused salts, and 3) hot wire decomposition of UI4, The first of these processes had been used extensively at Los Alamos since 1943 (and still is used) for the production of uranium metal.5 In considering the three processes it was evident that either of the last two would require an extensive development program with no certainty of success. On the other hand, a study of available data showed that uranium metal of very high purity with respect to some light elements had occasionally been made in routine processing by the first method. It was therefore decided that an intensive study of the bomb-reduction process would be made to see if it could be improved to yield uranium metal with very low concentrations of light elements. DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES The bomb-reduction process used at Los Alamos consists of reducing UF4 with calcium, using iodine as a booster. The reaction is carried out in a magnesium-oxide crucible enclosed in a steel bomb. Argon is used in the bomb to avoid objectionable side reactions which would occur in the presence of air. All ingredients for this bomb-reduction process were examined as possible sources of light elements. It was known that high-purity UF4 was required. The calcium used in the reductions was a source of carbon and magnesium. The magnesium-oxide crucibles were sources of boron, silicon, and magnesium. The iodine did not appear to be a source of any impurities. Pure UF4- The UF4 for bomb reduction is prepared from U3O3 , by successive reduction to UO2, with hydrogen and hydrofluorination of the UO2, with anhydrous HF. Since it was known that no impurities were normally introduced during the gas-solid reactions, effort was directed toward the preparation of high-purity U3O3. Of the many possible procedures for the purification of uranium solutions the following were investigated: 1) Precipitation of uranium peroxide. (Two procedures were tried. The first consisted of simultaneously adding hydrogen-peroxide and ammonium-hydroxide solutions to a uranyl-nitrate solution, containing citric and malonic acids, at such relative rates that precipitation was carried out at a constant pH of 1.5 The second consisted of simultaneously adding uranyl-nitrate, ammonium-hydroxide, and hydrogen-peroxide solutions to an aqueous solution

WHEN geophysical methods were first employed in the search for ore deposits and oil accumulations, it was hoped that they would provide a direct means of locating such concentrations. Magnetized needles were used long ago in prospecting for magnetic iron ore, and soon after the discovery of galvanism in about 1790 attempts were made to find concentrations of valuable minerals electrically. Evidence indicating that the early geophyeical instruments were regarded merely as improved divining or dowsing rods is to be seen in the names "mineral finders," "ore finders," etc., that were applied to them. Today, appellations of this kind raise serious doubts in informed minds as to the intelligence and integrity of individuals advocating the use of such euphemistically named methods or instruments, for experience and research have shown that, geophysical, it is never a question of directly locating a given mineral but merely of delimiting its possible occurrence.

Permeation rates of hydrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured at temperatures from 1300" to 2600°C with hydrogen pressure differentials of 1 and 0.1 atm across isothermal membranes. Rates were nearly Proportional to square root of pressure, were inversely ProPortional to membrane thickness, and were temperature-dependent according to the equation: p = permeation coefficient in cu cm (stp)-mm per sq cm-min-atmlr2, R = gas constant in cal per mole-OK, T = absolute temperature in OK. Permeation rates of oxygen through tungsten were deternlined in the range 1965" to 2300°C and at calculated oxygen (02) pressures of 3.3 x 10-4 to 2.2 x at?n using sealed capsules containing Kmown quantities of tungsten oxide. Permeation coefficients obtained in this manner had a temperature dependency in the range of 40 to 45 kcal per mole of permeating species. Permeation coefficients for oxygen were higher than those for hydrogen in the temperature range studied. This is probably the result of oxygen solubility being much greater than hydrogen solubility at these temperatures at a gzven pressure. The purpose of this investigation was to determine experimentally the permeabilities of hydrogen and oxygen through polycrystalline tungsten at temperatures ranging from 1300° to 2600°C. Permeation rates of hydrogen through tungsten have been measured at temperatures up to 925°C,but no previous measurements have been reported for the temperature range covered in this investigation. Some diffusion measurements3&apos;&apos; and solubility measurements3 have been made for hydrogen at temperatures below 2200°C. No previous permeability studies of oxygen through tungsten are known to the authors; however, efforts have been made to determine diffusion rates5-&apos; and solubilities PERMEATION THEQRY Permeation has been defined by ortton" as the overall steady-state flow process from the gas phase on one side of a membrane or wall to the gas phase on the other side and includes the steps of adsorption, solution, diffusion, exsolution, and desorption; in a given temperature range, any of these processes may be rate-controlling. For diatomic gases, which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at a given temperature is directly proportional to the surface area of the membrane, the length of time of permeation, and the difference between the square roots of the pressures on each side of the membrane, and it is inversely proportional to the thickness of the membrane when diffusion-controlled, thus: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, p = temperature-de pendent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane exposed, / = time, p i = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, d = thickness of membrane. When the surface reactions are not rate-controlling steps and the solution of the gas in the metal follows Henry&apos;s law, the permeation coefficient, P, is equal to the product of diffusivity and solubility. The permeation coefficient is also temperature-dependent according to the equation: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, T = absolute temperature. MATERIALS The tungsten materials used in this investigation were greater than 99.9 pct pure. The interstitial impurities ranged from < 1 to 50 pprn C, 7 to 35 ppm O, less than 15 pprn N, and undetectable quantities of hydrogen. Previous high-temperature studies of are-cast tungsten have shown that thermal treatment similar to that which the hydrogen permeation cells experienced reduces the carbon content from starting levels of 50 to 60 ppm to about 30 ppm. Metallic impurities were in the low (1 to 50) ppm range. The argon gas used in this investigation contained about 8 ppm N. None of the following gases were

Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. The following discussion deals primarily with coal of a wide size range as screenings and of wide density differences as uncleaned or run-of-mine screenings. If a mass of coal containing particles of a wide size range is subject to the stream action of a moving current of water, the small particles are transported farther than the coarser. Particles of different density in a stream of moving water are subject to the laws of classification, the heavier settling out first. Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. The following discussion deals primarily with coal of a wide size range as screenings and of wide density differences as uncleaned or run-of-mine screenings. If a mass of coal containing particles of a wide size range is subject to the stream action of a moving current of water, the small particles are transported farther than the coarser. Particles of different density in a stream of moving water are subject to the laws of classification, the heavier settling out first. SAFETY in coal mining received especial attention by the public in general and the mining industry in particular during 1940 and early in 1941, owing primarily to the six explosion disasters which occurred last year with a total of 276 fatalities. This was the largest number of fatalities due to explosions in bituminous coal mines since 1928, when 347 lives were so lost. But facilities due to explosions have had a definite decreasing trend since 1907, in spite of bad years such as 1917, 1924, 1932, 1937, and 1940. Although the upswing in explosion fatalities in 1940 is lamented by all, none will admit it represents a trend and it will serve mainly to stimulate ways and means of further reducing these disasters.

Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines or phosphate ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pct. When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. The pilot retort, as it is now constituted, is shown by diagram in Fig. 1 and photograph, Fig. 2. Ore is fed into the upper kiln by a screw; it is heated to 900" to 1100°F by direct flame and it is then discharged into an insulating hopper from which it goes

The correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refiments in x ray diffraction tech-niques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and Jetter in 1940&apos;2 Now that a sufficient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. The purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation 011 mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening, Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by a11 alloy system ill which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening.
