The Cr-Ni system was investigated between 900" and 1400°C and 45 to 100 wt pct Cr. The Cr-Fe system was studied between 1200" and 1385°C and 70 to 100 wt pct Cr. Powdered alloy compacts were produced from high-purity chromium, nickel, and iron poulders. The compacts were sintered in an argon atmosphere and then machined into small, 0.030-in. diam cylindrical specimens. These were then heated by induction in the high-temperature X-ray diJfractwn camem under a helium atmosphere and irradiated with copper Ka radiation. From the results of the high-temperature X-ray diffraction patterns it can be concluded that chromium exists only in the bcc form, and that no eutectoid reaction occurs in the Cr-Ni system in the temperature interval 900" to 1400°C. The X-ray diffraction patterns are in agreement with the Cr-Ni phase diagram of Bechtoldt and Vacher, and Williams. It is possible that chromium undergoes one or more allotropic transformations between room temperature and its melting point. Most of the evidence was gathered from the study of the chromium-rich ends of the Cr-Ni and Cr-Fe binary systems. All the investigations rely heavily on indirect methods: thermal analysis, electrical resistivity, and micro-graphic inspection of quenched samples. In the present work the chromium-rich side of the Cr-Ni and Cr-Fe binary systems is studied, using high-temperature X-ray diffraction techniques. Thus the coexistent structures can be observed directly at temperature. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS ~ansenl shows two possible Cr-Ni phase diagrams 1) a simple eutectic [Liquid =a-Cr(bcc) + y-Ni(fcc)], 2) a eutectic [Liquid+ P-Cr(fcc) + y-Ni(fcc)] and euctectoid [p-Cr(fcc) ==a-Cr(bcc) + yNi(fcc)]. The latter is based on the work of Grant and co-workers.2 Stein and rant'" placed the eutectoid composition at 1215°C and 68 wt pct Cr; their diagram is shown in Fig. l. Similarly, Sully3 also discusses the two proposed diagrams. Price and Grant,4 working on an isothermal section of the Cr-Ni- Fe ternary diagram at 1300°C, made no mention of a ß-chromium phase (fcc). The ß-chromium structure was also reported by Misencik 5 in the Cr-Nb(Cb) system. Williams 6 studied the Cr-Ni system using precipitation techniques. His work included the chromium and nickel solvus lines below 1250°C. He reported no ß structure nor any eutectoid reaction. The solvus lines which he produced were very similar to those of Jette, et al 7 below 1000°C. He concluded that Grant and coworkers2 had misinterpreted their data, and that effects which they had reported were actually due to the rapid and extensive precipitation of the nickel-rich phase. Bechtoldt and vacher8 used sintered powdered alloy compacts in an attempt to find the ß phase. They used metallographic and room-temperature X-ray diffraction techniques and also failed to detect the fcc chromium phase. They attributed the low slope of the chromium solvus at approximately 1150°C as the probable cause of the abundant precipitation obtained. They also stated that the precipitation was the probable cause for the abrupt discontinuities in the thermal analysis and electrical resistivity data which led to the conclusion that a eutectoid reaction existed. Fig. 1 also shows their diagram. Grigor'ev and coworkers9 investigated the polymorphic changes of chromium in the Cr-Ni phase diagram. Using standard microstructural and thermal analysis techniques, they published a phase diagram which contained five polymorphic forms of pure chromium and four eutectoid reactions. They stated that the room-temperature bcc chromium transformed to a fcc structure at 930°C, to bcc at 1300°C, to hcp at 1650oC, and then finally to bcc at 1830°C. The eutectoid reactions were placed at 850°, 960o, 1140°, and 1220°C. Also to be noted was the fact that the uppermost phase, the bcc above 1830°C, was different from the upper phase of Grant and coworkers,2 the fcc above 1840°C. Lattice parameters were determined for eighteen equiatornic alloys of the CsCl-type structure, ten of which were previously un-reported. It was found that fomation of the CsCl-type structure in binary alloys of the transition elements is largely dependent on position of the elements in the periodic table. The relative size of the two elements was not found to be a controlling factor. A recent paper by Beck, Darby, and Arora1 corre-lates the occurrence of CsC1-type ordered structures with the position of the constituent elements in the periodic table for the first long period. It was also suggested that a definite increase in relative bond strength between unlike atoms occurred when, in binary alloys of iron-group elements, the other component is changed from a chromium-group element, to a vanadium-group element, to titanium. A later paper by Philip and Beck2 noted that the lattice contraction increased in the order CrFe, VFe, and TiFe. It was also noted by Philip and Beck2 that the lattice contractions of CsC1-type alloys decreased in the order: TiFe, TiCo, and TiNi, which is an apparent reversal of the contractions expected from the position in the periodic table. It was suggested that the increasing lattice contraction is an indication of increased stability, i.e., greater A-Bbond strength. The present investigation was carried out to determine whether the relation of the position in the periodic table to the formation of the CsC1-type structure was also correct for alloys involving the second and third long-period elements. A systematic search was made for CsC1-type structures among equiatomic alloys and for those found, the lattice contraction was determined. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The elements Y, Gd, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, and Cb are designated the A group and the elements Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, and Au are designated the B group. Equiatomic alloys were prepared for 57 AB combinations. The alloys were arc melted in a multicrucible furnace3 in buttons ranging from 5 to 20 g. Chemical analyses were not made, as the charge weights agreed closely with those of the buttons after melting. The alloy buttons were homogenized at 800° to 900°C. Metal log raphic and X-ray specimens were prepared and heat treated at temperatures from 600° to 1200°C. Specimens for X-ray diffraction were usually ground to a powder in an agate mortar; however, needle-shaped solid specimens were used when the alloy was sufficiently ductile to permit their preparation. Diffraction patterns were taken with a Straumanistype Debye-Scherrer camera using filtered Cu or Co radiation. The lattice parameters were obtained in A by plotting the calculated a0 values against the cos29/sin 0 + cos2?/? function and extrapolating linearly to ?= 900. Metallographic control specimens were polished on cloth wheels with diamond paste and etched with various phosphoric and nitric acid reagents. RESULTS The eighteen equiatomic alloys listed in Table I gave evidence of a cubic structure with two atoms in the unit cell, although two of these cubic structures exist only at elevated temperatures and transform to a tetragonal structure on quenching. Nine of these eighteen alloys gave diffraction patterns with super-lattice lines showing that the structure is of the CsC1-type. The lack of superlattice lines in patterns of the other nine alloys may be attributed to the small difference in atomic scattering power of the components. Metallographic study indicates the occurrence of nine narrow single-phase fields at the AB composition. Any or all of these nine may also have a CsC1-type structure. The VFe alloy was found to have a CsCl-type structure by Philip and Beck2 through the use of CrKa radiation (for which the scattering factor of V is anomalously low), whereas the Cu radiation used

STUDY of several severe mine explosions that occurred during the winter of 1907 led to the belief that coal dust was a definite explosion hazard. The Consolidation Coal Co. was a pioneer in the early work to' eliminate this hazard and to combat the dangers incident to poor ventilation and the presence of methane. Maintenance of high humidity throughout the mines was one of the first measures adopted, later to be superseded by rock-dusting. In the twenty years from 1907 on, many safety measures were developed and adopted, and several prizes were won, though the practice was crude by present-day standards. But in 1927, the company went to work in earnest, and organized a Department of Safety with adequate personnel and with authority to enforce all approved rules for the prevention of accidents and the preservation of company property. All plans for new construction work, changes in mining systems, and proposals for the purchase of new mining equipment had to receive the approval of this Department. A set of operating- and safety standards was written to govern the activities of all employees, and physical examinations for them were required.

DURING the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their, desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer layers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in. the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at, first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice. THE area in which spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur extends from Gaffney, S. C., in a northerly direction to Lincolnton, N. C., a distance of about 16 miles. The zone averages 2 miles in width. Interest in this area was first aroused by the discovery of small amounts of cassiterite in the peg-matites and in greissen which occurs on the walls of some of the pegmatites. Attempts were made from 1880 into the 1920's to mine and concentrate cas-siterite, but there were no successful operations. In 1935 L. M. Williams became interested in the area and began prospecting by trenching and sinking several small shafts. He gradually gained control of a considerable acreage south of the city of Kings Mountain, N. C. Mr. Williams states that he produced some ore from a shaft which he shipped to the Maywood Chemical Co. in the late 1930's. In 1937 G. H. Chambers of the Foote Mineral Co. visited the area and examined several properties, but the lithium market was too small to support the necessary concentrating plant. Early in World War II the Solvay Process Co., encouraged by various federal agencies, acquired the Williams properties and leases and started a drilling program to develop reserves for spodumene mining. A study of this area was also made under T. L. Kesler by the U. S. Department of the Interior Geological Survey. Starting in 1942 a concentrating plant, water supply dams, and shops and other buildings were constructed. The Superior Stone Co., a neighboring crushed stone operator, was awarded a contract to mine and crush the pegmatite ore. Late in 1943 the plant started operations, which were continued until February 1946. A drop in demand for lithium chemicals forced it to close and remain closed for several years. In 1948 the Foote Mineral Co. became interested in assuring itself a source of lithium ore on the North American continent, to be used in the production of lithium ore chemicals, and inspected properties in Canada, South Dakota, and North Carolina. The North Carolina deposits were the most promising. In the fall of 1950 the company leased the Solvay interests with option to buy and acquired additional properties. Renovation of the mill and preparation of the quarry for mining was begun in earnest in January 1951. A new crushing plant was built and construction started in July 1951. The flotation process used was developed in the North Carolina State Minerals Research Laboratory located at Asheville, N. C. Foote is now in the process of expanding its production. The crushing plant is being revamped and much of the old milling equipment purchased from Solvay will be replaced by new. Mining equipment of suitable capacity has been received and is in use. The frontispiece is a general view of the mill. The orebodies consist of pegmatite dikes composed of fine-grained albite and quartz, with varying amounts of mica and spodumene. The latter may amount to as much as 50 pct of the rock, but the overall average is about 15 to 20 pct. Tin, columbite-tantalite, beryl, and other valuable minerals are present in varying small amounts. These dikes, which intruded into the Roan Gneiss underlying most of the Piedmont area, strike approximately N 30 E and dip about 85" to the west. THE properties of the Patiño Mines and Enterprises Consolidated, Inc., a New York corporation, are near Llallagua in the department of Chayanta in the west central part of Bolivia, South America, about 80 miles southeast of Oruro and 250 miles southeast of La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia and its virtual capital. The properties are accessible by railroad from three points on the west coast-from Mollendo, Peru, across Lake Titicaca, from Arica by way of La Paz, and from Antofagasta, Chile. The latter route, although the longest, is recommended by the companies as affording a more gradual introduction to the high altitudes; the mine being 13,000 ft. above sea level. The company operates its own railroad from its properties at Uncia to Machacamarca on the Chile & Bolivia R. R., a distance of 60 miles. This railroad is well equipped and well operated, and its location among the mountains surrounding Uncia represents excellent engineering skill. In fact all of the railroads, although they are of only a meter gage, are remarkable for the excellence of their construction, the arrangement of their dining and sleeping cars and the precision of their operation. There is only one drawback to rail- road and hotel accommodations and that is the absence of heating facilities, which does not seem to affect the natives but keeps a tenderfoot's teeth chattering continually. The company is a consolidation of the Patiño company, owning properties at Uncia, with the Compafiia Estanfera de Llallagua, a' Chilean corporation owning contiguous properties at Llallagua. Before the consolidation these companies were deadly enemies, and there still remain at the surface plant at Uncia the fortifications and underground defences provided during the warfare between the two factions. Also, in the Azul, or "Blue" tunnel at the junction line between the two properties is a strong steel barricade still bearing marks of the bullets fired during the various armed tilts between the workmen of the two companies. The headquarters for the mining operations and the milling plant have been moved since the consolidation from the original location at Uncia to the Llallagua side of the mountain, where the Chilean company's operations were carried on. The historic old town of Uncia, with its massive stone buildings of Spanish design, is a wreck, while the Llallagua side is being rapidly built up with modern structures.

Magnetic iron ore was mined in Essex County, N. Y., during the American Revolution; Benedict Arnold is said to have mined ore near Port Henry to secure iron for chains and spikes for the Lake Champlain fleet. Details regarding the operations prior to 1804 are not easily obtained but work on a commercial scale appears to have been started about 1838. The Witherbee, Sherman & Co. was established in 1849. The property of the district is held in fee almost entirely by the mining companies. The Mineville iron-ore district, as well as the entire Adirondack region, belongs to the pre-Cambrian complex. The readily identified rocks consist of gabbro, anorthosite, syenite, and granite, and are classed as igneous, eruptive, and intrusive. In addition, there is a great variety of gneisses, rocks with a variable mineral composition but all more or less distinctly foliated. The Grenville series are the oldest rocks in the district; this series consists of graphitic white limestones, graphitic sandstones, and quartzites and gneisses with or without graphite. The orebodies occur in the gneissic rocks and are comformable to the structure of the rocks. The typical occurrence of the ore in this district is in lenticular bodies with a parallel pitch to the southwest; this structure is best exemplified in the New Bed mine. The Harmony and Old Bed orebodies are faulted by two sets of diabase dikes, one set having a southwest strike and the other set an east-west strike. The ores occurring in the acid gneissic rocks are non-titaniferous. The ores occurring in the gabbros and anorthosites are high in titanium; these deposits are irregular, have no structural relation with one another, and are unquestionably of igneous origin. The origin of the gneissic rocks and the ores therein contained is not settled; both the sedimentary theory of ore concentration and the igneous theory of magmatic segregation have been advanced. King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days' supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

PETROLEUM technology was the sole subject of discussion at the meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Baker Hotel, Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6-7, except for the brief talks by President Becket and Secretary Parsons at the dinner on Friday evening. Even on this occasion, following the scheduled official features, it was in order to talk "shop." W. E. Wrather and E. A. Stephenson, respectively Chairman and Secretary of the Division, had planned for a meeting of this nature and by preference, apparently, the 122 who registered fell in with the scheme wholeheartedly. Not because the competent local committee had not provided for it, but by choice, the members just did not sign up for entertainment or field trips, but did attend largely the three technical sessions and engage in earnest discussion of the approximately dozen excellent papers. In this connection, and without question, the high lights of the meeting were the papers by Morris Muskat and R. D. Wyckoff, and Prof. W. K. Lewis. The former, entitled, "A Theoretical Analysis of Waterflooding Networks," had been entirely demathematized by the authors for presentation at this and the Los Angeles meetings; the author of the latter, which was on the "Physical-chemical Relationships of Hydrocarbon Gas-liquid Mixtures at High Pres¬sures," had airplaned to Dallas in the company of Dr. H. D. Wilde from Chicago in order to present his paper at the final session on Saturday morning.

I am deeply sensible of the honor you have conferred on me in electing me your president for this year. It is difficult to understand why I have merited such distinction at your hands, except that I may possibly have helped, in some small way, in the develop ment of metallurgical practice in the West. I fear, however, that I shall fall far shirt of the expectations you may have in regard to my fitness for such a position. The responsibility of preparing an address for this occasion has caused me considerable thought and anxiety. Unlike my predecessors in office, many of whom have dealt in their presidential addresses with subjects covering a wide field, which they could survey with the confidence born of their own extensive knowledge, I have been confined by my experience, during the last twenty-five years, almost wholly to that portion of metallurgical science which bears especially on the treatment of gold and silver. Yet perhaps some sort of general review of the progress of this branch of metallurgy in the West, besides being the contribution I feel myself best qualified to offer, may prove acceptable to many of the members of the Institute. Some few of the gentlemen present will remember the crude condition of metallurgical practice as it was conducted in Colorado only twenty-five years ago. My own personal experience covers a period of eighteen years; and during this comparatively short time I have seen the most astonishing changes in the conduct of metallurgical works. In all probability the marked progress which this country has exhibited could hardly be reached anywhere else, and this result has been achieved mainly by the activity and enterprise so characteristic of the men of the West. The first little successful attempt at smelting made at Black Hawk, in 1867, by Ex-Senator N. P. Hill, representing the Boston and Colorado Smelting Company, proved a great boon to the miners,

THIS paper is an effort to explain in a simple manner the fundamental principles involved in examining a clay deposit for both quantity and quality and in operating a clay mine, either open-pit or underground, SO that the best quality of finished material can be made from the raw material available. The writer is aware that what is recommended in this paper is everyday practice in many refractories plants and in some other heavy-clay products plants, but observations made while visiting practically every clay mine in Ohio have convinced him that the practices herein discussed are not as widely used as their importance warrants. It is true that the problem of mining for quality is more acute in refractories plants than in most heavy-clay products plants, yet some of the latter are finding it profitable to pay more than ordinary attention to the selection and blending of their raw materials. It is hoped that this short paper may prove helpful to some who are now finding it difficult to produce a uniform product of as high quality as their clay deposit seems to warrant. The coordination of the work of the clay mine or pit with the manufacturing plant, to the end that the best product possible be made from the raw material available, presupposes a rather intimate knowledge of the clay deposit. The knowledge must include not only information of the amount of clay available but also rather detailed information about both vertical and horizontal variations in quality of the clay. This information should cover three things: quality, quantity, and location. Sampling Undeveloped Deposits In the case of an undeveloped deposit with a shallow overburden, pitting may be the cheapest way of testing. For thick deposits or deposits with rather heavy overburden, the diamond drill, using a double core barrel, offers the best means of testing. When using the diamond drill in clay testing, it is doubtful whether it pays to take less than 2-in. cores; it is difficult to get complete cores with smaller drills, and the quantity of material obtained with smaller cores is not sufficient for the necessary tests.

The Coal Preparation Branch of the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center has developed a computer program to calculate the performance characteristics of coal washing devices. This program uses specific gravity analyses of the clean coal and refuse streams as input, and generates dependent and independent performance criteria for the washer. Partition curves are internally represented in a functional form by a Weibull function. Performance criteria generated by this computer program are compared to manually calculated performance criteria for air tables, Dynawhirlpools, Baum jigs, hydrocyclones, and dense medium cyclones. The comparisons show that the computer program gives results in close agreement with the hand- calculated values while greatly reducing the amount of time involved in performing the analyses.

The following paper deals almost exclusively with the results of practice at the works of the Pennsylvania Steel Company at Steelton, Pa. From the records of the furnaces at this plant, both acid and basic, large and small, are drawn the data for the various demon strations, and on a long and intimate experience with their opera tions are founded many theories and generalizations. It may seem that universal laws should not be built upon a basis so restricted ; but in reality the condition is the strongest guarantee of validity. Each table investigates some- certain variable, and by virtue of the common origin of the factors, we have good ground for assuming the corresponding agents to be equal. The examples may or may not be instances of good practice, and may be open to criticism if regarded solely as exponents of • metallurgical success. But it must be remembered that the lists are not made up of selected specimens, nor are they chosen to show su perior results; they are gathered to investigate, by strict scientific methods, the formula? of the operation. In such work no untoward results should be eliminated, save those which bear upon their face the stamp of experimental error. If the worst members be omitted, then the best must also be omitted. Only by using every available case can an honest attempt be made to deduce a true average. It is recog nized, however, that with the most careful selection it is difficult, if not impossible, to collect data representing universal conditions. In each table the records tell of a special practice, and all conclusions drawn from them are true only within the limits between which the equations have been integrated. These unique copper-deposits occur on the top of the Kaibab Plateau, in Cocouino county, Arizona, and extend from the northern edge of the Grand Cañon of the Colorado river to near the Utah State line. The best-developed deposits are near Jacobs Lake, 30 miles south of the Utah line, where they are 16 ft. thick, of unknown width, and are more or less continuous for 5 miles. From Jacobs Lake to the edge of the Grand Cañon, a distance of 40 miles, outcrops of ore have been found, but no explorations have been made except those of wandering cowboys and hunters. The Kaibab Plateau, the highest of the Colorado river plateaus, is a great uplift, about 90 miles long from north to south, and from 10 to 20 miles wide from east to west. Its southern face is the Grand Cañon; its western boundary a N—S. fault plane, which separates it from the Eanab Plateau, lying 1,500 ft. below. Its eastern edge is a monocline which brings the horizontal beds of the high plateau to the level of the plateaucountry of eastern Utah. The elevation of the plateau near the Colorado river is over 8,000 ft., and about 6,000 ft. at the Utah line. Its structure, as shown by the western fault, consists of about 500 ft. of Aubrey limestones underlain by 1,000 ft. of red sandstones. The limestone is the upper member of the Carboniferous, and is overlaid by the marls and shales of the Permian, 25 miles to the north on the Kanab Plateau. At the town of Kanab, near the Utah line, the Permian strata pass under the magnificent redsandstone cliffs of the Triassic, that rise to heights of 1,000 ft. above the desert. The Grand Cañon exposes a section a mile deep at the southern end of the plateau, showing all the formations from the Archean to the top of the Carboniferous.

The importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 -AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold—many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. .Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. During the machining operation much of the finely porous subsurface structure was obliterated. Accordingly, observations were also made

DURING late years, the proportion of beileficiated iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior District has increased very rapidly. By benefication is meant washing, screening, drying, sintering or any process by which the grade or structure of the crude ore is improved before shipment. In 1915, only 3,000,- 000 tons, or 9 per cent, of t6e total Minnesota shipment was beneficiated ore, compared with 13,500,000 tons, or 35 per cent, of the total Minnesota shipment in 1925. This increase is, of course, due to the fact that iron and steel can be made more cheaply after beneficiating these ores than they could have been had these ores not been so treated. Fundamentally, however, several causes contribute to the necessity for beneficiating iron ores, such as depletion of the reserves of high-grade ores, the iron ore leasing systems and taxation methods and, at the smelting plants, a better understanding of blast-furnace operations, increased operating costs and increased sulfur content of blast-furnace coke. As economic conditions change, it is by no means certain that the proportion of beneficiated ore shipped each year is going to continue to increase. Undoubtedly some of the beneficiation operations are not economically sound at the present time and what the future has in store for the iron ore industry is problematical. Generally speaking, the cost of fuel for blast-furnace operations will increase as time goes on and in order to continue to produce cheap iron and steel, some of the other costs must be lowered. Freight and labor rates probably can- not be reduced. The cost of producing iron ore cannot be reduced much below the present price. It therefore appears that the best opportunity for maintaining iron and steel prices at their present level in spite of in- creased costs of labor and raw materials is to use. less or cheaper raw materials. This, of course, contemplates an improvement in metallurgical processes all along the line and, as a matter of fact, we can confidently expect these improvements because scientific investigations will undoubtedly be even more productive in the future than they have been in the past.

Epitaxial growth of GaAs 1-xPx on germanium substrates was achieved using an open tube vapor transport system. The compositional range of 0.3 < x < 0.4 was examined. The best results were obtained with (311) orientation of the germanium substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting layers were investigated using several techniques. Spectrographic analyses of the layers indicate substantial incorporation of germanium into the GaAs t-X Px layer. Evidence is presented which indicates that this incorporation occurs via a vapor phase transport process rather than by solid phase dijfu-sion. Electrical measurements suggest that the germanium thus incorporated behaves predominantly as a deep donor in the compositional range of 0.33 < x * 0.40 and has a deleterious effect upon the luminescent properties of GaAs1-x Px. The increasing technological importance of GaAs1-xPx for use in light-emitting devices has led to an evaluation of several aspects of existing growth processes. The method most commonly used to prepare GaAs1-xPx for electroluminescent device applications is vapor phase epitaxial growth on GaAs substrates.&apos;-4 In a typical electroluminescent diode structure the active region of the diode is entirely within the epitaxial layer and thus the electrical properties of the substrate are relatively unimportant since it is effectively a simple series resistance (assuming hetero-junction effects to be negligible). The use of germanium rather than GaAs as the substrate material is of interest for several reasons. First, GaAs of reasonable structural quality has been epitaxially grown on germanium4-2 and it is reasonable to expect that GaAs1-xPx could subsequently be deposited on the GaAs layer. Second, germanium substrates are readily available with both lower dislocation densities and larger areas than GaAs. Finally, single crystals of germanium are more economical than GaAs single crystals. The principal objective of the present investigation was to test the feasibility of growing GaAs1-xPx epi-taxially on germanium substrates, and to evaluate the properties of such layers with regard to electroluminescent device requirements. The approach used was to a) demonstrate epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx on germanium, and b) characterize the relevant structural, electrical, and optical properties of the GaAs1-xPx layers. The possibility of germanium incorporation into the grown layers was of special interest since there was some indication of this in previous studies of GaAs growth on germanium.5&apos;11,12 Although a study of the electrical properties of germanium in GaAs1-xPx was not an intent of this investigation, several features of the electrical properties of the layers grown in the present study which appear to be due to germanium are described. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The open-tube vapor transport system used for the epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx is illustrated in Fig. 1. This system utilizes the GaC1-GaC13 transport reaction and is similar in most respects to the larger system described elsewhere.&apos; The germanium substrates were n-type, with a resistivity of 40 ohm-cm (Eagle-Picher Co.). These were cut to the orientations of {100), {111), and (3111, and were mechanically polished and chemically etched in CP-4 (5 min at 0°C) prior to growth. In some cases, a GaAs substrate was employed in addition to the germanium. The orientation of the latter was {loo}, and they were also mechanically polished and chemically etched prior to growth. The initial composition of the deposited layer was pure GaAs. After approximately 10 microns of GaAs was deposited on the germanium substrate, the phosphorus content of the layer was gradually increased over a distance of approximately 15 microns to the desired concentration and maintained at this value throughout the remainder of the growth. Typical operating parameters used during growth are given in Table I. Selenium was used as a n-type dopant in several runs to facilitate comparison of the electrical properties of the layers grown on germanium with those of layers grown on GaAs substrates, which are usually doped with selenium. The concentration of H2Se in the gas phase was adjusted to a value which would normally yield a carrier density of 1 to 5 x 101 7 at room temperature in layers grown on GaAs substrates. The terminal surfaces of the epitaxial layers were examined by optical microscopy for structural characteristics. Laue back-reflection photographs (Cu radi-ation) were also made on the terminal surface to verify the epitaxial nature of the deposit. After these steps
