Hardening of soft metals can be accomplished by dispersing finely divided hard particles in them. The dispersing of finely divided alumina in silver in the presence of oxygen yields a high strength material which is unusual in that its mechanical properties above the melting point of the continuous Ag-O alloy matrix are similar to other solids. The tensile strength is studied for two of these alloys, one of which contains 15 pct by weight alumina and the other 20 pct by weight alumina. The average fracture strengths above 960°C of these alloys were found to be 0.4 x106 dynes per sq cm and 3.8x106 dynes per sq cm respectively. The strengths appenred to be independent of temperature above 960° C. The creep behavior of the 20 pct alumina material was studied above 960°C. The initial creep rate, 6 , of this material can be represented by where s is the applied stress and E the activation energy for the process. This energy is of the order of 1.7 to 2.1 ev. HARDENING of soft metals by the addition of finely divided, hard particles has resulted in the production of materials with excellent creep resistance and with inhibited recrystallization.' It has been demonstrated that such composites have useful strength up to temperatures very near the melting point of the soft metals, but one might expect that the strengthening by the dispersed particles ceases to be of importance above the melting point of the softer phase. This, however, is not so.2 In this paper the strengthening of a liquid Ag-O solution by the presence of dispersed alumina is discussed and experimental data concerning the mechanical properties of such a material at temperatures above 960°C presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were prepared using powder metallurgical techniques. Finely divided silver oxide was mixed in the appropriate proportions with "Linde B" alumina. For these experiments the specimens contained 15 or 20 wt pct alumina in pure silver.* These alloys were used in these experiments since they were the ones that could be handled readily enough to yield experimental data. Silver oxide was used in preference to silver because it is readily available in a very finely divided form and because the presence of excess oxygen in the silver is important to the properties2 of the material. The powders were mixed wet, using alcohol as the medium, in an ordinary food blender until a uniform mixture was obtained. They were then dried and heated to reduce the silver oxide to silver. Only a fraction of the finely divided silver remains unoxi-dized upon removal from the oven since the finest particles of silver oxidize immediately upon contact with air. The remaining fine silver served as a binder during pressing. The mixture was then pressed at 20 tons per sq in. into shoulder-grip (reduced section 1/4 in. by l/4 in. by 1 1/4 in.) and rectangular bar specimens (l/4 in. by 1/4 in. by 2 in.). The green specimens were heated very rapidly in a globar furnace to 1000°C, held at temperature untic they had reached theoretical density and then furnace cooled. The strength of the two compositions at temperatures above 960 °C was determined by pulling shoulder grip specimens inside a furnace mounted on a tensile machine. Specimens were gripped by means of wires wrapped around the shoulders of the specimen. Temperatures were measured by means of a chro-mel-alumel thermo-couple placed in the vicinity of the specimen. Control of temperature (within ±°15C) was accomplished by means of a Weston Recorder-Controller. Before loading, specimens were held at temperature for approximately 15 min in order to insure uniform specimen temperature. The low loads were measured by a special load cell designed by Baldwin Lima Hamilton. All testing was performed on a FGT testing machine of the same com-pany. Creep studies were performed in bending utilizing rectangular specimens of the 20 pct alumina alloy. Specimens supported at both ends by knife edges of inconel were placed in a globar furnace, heated quickly to temperature, and the deflection of the beam measured optically as a function of time. US 4,190,436 - In the cyanide leaching of gold ore in tailing or ore dump piles, or gold ore in vats or on pads, the ore is agitated and oxygenated by introducing timed bursts of air, along with cyanide in a cyclic or regulated manner. The leach liquor is drained from the material by providing a continuous flow of air. Fines are homogenously mixed, thereby reducing channelling In the ore bed. FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.

THE demand for improved materials for high-temperature service has increased during the last few years. Iron,- nickel,- and cobalt-base alloys have been investigated extensively and many alloys with outs'tanding high-temperature strength have been developed. Considerable research has been directed toward improved methods of processing these alloys. The vacuum furnace as a tool for the purification and improved control of high-temperature alloys has been studied extensively and production units are in operation. The research covered by this paper studied the effects of casting in air, vacuum, or argon upon the elevated-temperature properties of two nickel- and two cobalt-base alloys. The alloys investigated were Stellite 31, He 1049, Udimet 500, and Guy Alloy. MELTING AND CASTING PROCEDURES Two heats of each of the four alloys under investigation were melted and investment cast under the following conditions: 1) Stellite 31 was melted and investment cast in air and in vacuum, with an argon atmosphere for pouring. 2) He 1049 was melted and investment cast in air and in vacuum, with an argon atmosphere for pouring. 3) Udimet 500 was melted and investment cast in vacuum with and without additions of zirconium and boron. 4) Guy Alloy was melted and investment cast in vacuum and in argon. The heats were all melted in induction furnaces equipped with preformed magnesia crucibles of 50-lb capacity. The air-melting furnace was powered by a spark-gap converter of 40 kw capacity. The vacuum-melting furnace was powered by a motor-generator set of 100 kw capacity. The argon heat of Guy alloy was melted in the vacuum melting furnace under an argon atmosphere. Virgin materials were used for preparing all heats except the air heats of Stellite 31 and He 1049. The charge for the air heat of Stellite 31 was a commercial blend of shot. The charge for the air heat of He 1049 was Stellite 6 shot plus those virgin materials necessary to give the desired composition. All of the materials used were of the same grade used com-

The precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstatten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe3P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. Precipitation of Fe4N from Alpha Solid Solution of N in Alpha Fe Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kauppl and by Lehrerz have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591' C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

The first session of the Institute was held at the Smithsonian Institution, on Tuesday evening, February 22d. The members were welcomed to Washington and to the Smithsonian by Prof. Joseph Henry. MEMBERS of the Engineering Education Committee held two meetings at Joplin preliminary to the opening of the main meeting there. The first was held on Sunday afternoon. It was attended by all who had arrived early enough and as among the dozen or' fifteen who were present the heads of a half dozen schools of mines were included it was a representative gathering. C: H. Fulton, chairman of the Committee presided and T. T. Read acted as secretary of the meeting. The chair., man reminded those present that last year there had been some discussion as to the advisability of the proposal, made by Edward Steidle, that a, separate society, devoted to education in the mineral industry, he organized. Many .people had felt that there are already so many societies in existence to demand one's time and attention, that it would be a mistake to add to their number and the counter suggestion had been made that the work of this committee could be so reorganized as to meet all the needs that a separate society could fill. He therefore presented for discussion these four' questions: (1) Shall a subcommittee .be appointed to study, and report in February, 1932, the possibility of the reorganization of the work of the Engineering Education Committee into the equivalent of an' Institute division; (2) if the work is so reorganized what shall be the relation of the work of the Committee (division) to the work of the-Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; (3.): what are the, cardinal objectives of education for the mineral industry; and (4) what should be done as regards the movement in some institutions to plan their work-in the light of that being done in other institutions, for example, in geophysics?

THE diffusion of carbon in gamma iron plays an essential role in many metallurgical processes. In carburizing, in graphitizing, in homogenizing, in the formation of pearlite from austenite, and in other processes, migra-tion of carbon in gamma iron occurs.1,2 A full understanding of the rate at which these processes occur obviously requires a knowledge of the rate of diffusion of carbon. In carburizing, for example, the depth of carbon pentration is determined by the carbon concentration in solid solution at the surface, and by the rate of diffusion inward of the carbon. Until reliable data on the rates of diffusion of carbon are available it is unlikely that a full quantitative description of this process will be obtained. In the formation of pearlite from austenite, the segregation of carbon and alpha iron from the austenite obviously requires the diffusion of carbon; the rate at which pearlite nodules grow is evidently controlled at least in part by the rate of diffusion of carbon; it is unlikely that we shall understand the factors that determine the rate of growth unless data on rates of diffusion of carbon, and the variation of these with com-position, grain size, and temperature are available. Accordingly it was decided: (1) to determine, more accurately than hitherto, the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite over a wide temperature and a wide concentration range, (2) to study the influence of grain size and impurities on this diffusion coefficient, and (3) to study the effect of manganese and nickel on the rate of diffusion of carbon in the austenite of manganese and nickel steels, respectively; the influence of carbon on the rate of diffusion of manganese and of nickel will be made the subject of later papers. The rate of diffusion of carbon in gamma iron has been studied by Runge3 by Tammann and Schönert4, by Bramley and co-authors,5-14 and

[SECRETARY'S ]NOTE.-The following notes, arranged and edited in this office, but not yet revised by the author, were placed at my disposal with much modest hesitation (due to their incomplete and fragmentary character), upon my earnest request, and my argument that such recent and trustworthy data concerning a new and important mining industry ought not to be withheld from our Transactions, simply because they are not sufficient to constitute a, complete academic treatise on the subject. This argument is recommended to the attention of many other members, who are waiting for the opportunity to contribute something "monumental" to our Transactions. In a number of instances, death has nulli¬fied this ambition, and the intended "monumental" contribution has turned out to be an obituary notice by the Secretary, instead of a valuable record of the professional experience thus hopelessly lost to the world.-R. R.] The official publications of the the Russian Government give fairly complete statistics of the dredges operated in the Empire; and in a recent English bluebook, Mr. Cook's report on Siberian Trade presents a brief account of dredging in Siberia. The data in Table I. (not given by Mr. Cook) have been taken from the Gold Mining Messenger (Russian) for July, 1905. These interesting statistics, though incomplete, show that the Yenisei dredges are working on poor ground and yield small returns. According to report, but few yield a profit exceeding 10 per cent. per annum on the capital invested. In the summers of 1904 and 1905, I traveled in the Urals as far north as lat. 61° N., long. 61° E., on the the Lozva river, a part of the vast system of the 01) river. This clear-water stream starts from the summits of the Urals at an altitude of 4,000 ft., and flows through a flat country, densely wooded with larch, spruce, pine, fir, birch and poplar. The river is full of fish, and is navigable for good-sized steamers as far as Ivdell. Winter lasts from early November to late April, the temperature rang¬ing from -60° F. to a summer maximum of 90° F. The rain¬fall is 20 in.. The climate is healthy, although mosquitoes,

THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C. This paper reports the theoretical and experimental results of an analysis of ore pass drawdown as a problem in soil plasticity. The method of analysis developed appears to be a promising technique of investigating the mechanics of fragmented materials. A reconstructed plasticity theory brings experiment and theory into reasonable agreement, and hence may provide the foundation needed for rational ore pass design. The gravity-induced movement of broken rock through ore passes is an economical method of transporting fragmented materials through large vertical distances in underground mines, provided the ore pass is well designed. Unfortunately, the design procedures now followed do not very often result in ore passes that function properly. On the one hand, the huge accumulation of empirical data pertaining to the movement of materials in gravel bunkers, storage bins, deep grain silos and other structures that have features in common with ore passes remains uncorrelated. On the other hand, there is a dearth of experimental data substantiating theoretical models of material behavior. Consequently, reliable generalizations encompassing the broad spectrum of problems involved have not been forthcoming. AS an initial step towards improving the situation, a detailed case study of two-dimensional ore pass drawdown was made. The mechanics of the process were analyzed theoretically as a problem in soil plasticity and tested experimentally through observations of a laboratory ore pass model. THEORY Taylor1 defines a soil as a "mass commonly considered to consist of a network or skeleton of solid particles, enclosing voids of varying size." Broken rock in an ore pass is such a material. In plasticity theory this material is replaced by an idealized substance that deforms elastically up to some state of stress at which slip or yield occurs,2 For com-pressive states of stress, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion is a satisfactory yield condition. After the yield point is reached, the ideal soil deforms in accordance with the concept of plastic potential.4 Under plane strain conditions the governing equations separate into a system of stress equations and a system of velocity equations.' Only stress variables appear in the stress system. The velocity system, however, contains a stress variable. The two systems are, therefore, coupled. Both systems are hyperbolic, and each has two real, distinct families of characteristic curves that coincide according to the classical theory of ideal soil plasticity. The

THE various methods of treating pulp in air-agitation tanks offer problems for experiment and study which are fascinating as well as practical. The usual method heretofore has been to fill each tank in turn, agitate the mixture the required period and then discharge the treated pulp into a storage-tank, from which it. is drawn to the filter as required. A later method is to run the pulp from the tube-mill, classifier, thickener, or settler into the first of a set of tanks, and thence continuously or in series through the remaining tanks, finally drawing off the pulp to a continuous filter, or to a pulp-storage tank if the filter is of the intermittent type. It is this method which I propose to discuss here in a preliminary way, with the idea of going exhaustively into the examination of the results of a series of experiments in a later paper. It may be of interest to note that the design of a cyanide-plant has recently been completed in which the estimated cost of the agitation-tanks, storage-tanks, and pumps was 30 per cent higher for the charge-agitation arrangement than for the series plan. The first question in studying the series method is, "What is the actual period of treatment undergone by the pulp?? One first supposes that by chance some of the pulp may get through with little or no treatment, while other portions may stay in the tanks a needlessly long period. The former is not probable or even possible, and the latter is, practically, true to only a limited extent. The greater the number of tanks the greater is the percentage of chance that all the pulp will be treated equally. Without going into the mathematical analysis of the problem (which is of little value, since it is based on problematical premises), its important terms may be clearly grasped by thinking of, or " visualizing," the conditions when,
