THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

The activity of aluminum in liquid Al-Fe alloys .has been measured by an improved version of the transportation method in which the metallic vapor has been collected by its solution in a metallic condenser. The results can be represented by the equation: log yAl = -3.0(1 - xAl2) (0.6 < XAl < 1.0) This equation applies at 1315°C. MORRIS and zellarsl adapted the transportation method for measuring the vapor pressure of a com- ponent of an alloy at high temperature. We have modified their technique further2 for use with metals that are strong oxide formers. In the present case the method has been applied to the Al- Fe system to obtain the activity of aluminum in the liquid region at 1315°C. Dried ultrahigh-purity hydrogen (Matheson) is the carrier gas. The operations, Fig. 1, of deoxidizing the gas, equilibrating the gas with the sample at 1315";, and then collecting the aluminum vapor are all accomplished within a single, continuous alumina tube to avoid contamination of the system by leaks. De-oxidation to a very low level of PO2 (<10-25 atm) is Obtained by passing the hydrogen through a tightly packed bed of aluminum powder. BALATOC mine, the principal gold-producing mine in the Philippines, is 10 miles southeast of Baguio, in the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon.1 The region is a deeply dissected plateau, ranging in altitude from 3000 t0 5000 ft. above sea level. The rocks consist chiefly of granodiorite, diorite, and remnants of metamorphosed sediments, cut by dikes of andesite porphyry and quartz-diorite porphyry. All are intruded by a volcanic breccia plug, oval in horizontal section, about 3200 ft. long and 2300 ft. wide, which is the north central part of the mineralized area. Three main vein systems have been developed (Fig. 1): q6, 231 and 364, which strike about N.70°E. and dip 5o to 90°S. Each system is a braided zone consisting of many individual components. They are disturbed by a series of premineral faults or shear zones striking about N.45°E. Twelve of these produce important effects on the persistence, character, and quality of veins. From west to east the faults are named (after claims): Hog, Big Gun, Bull, Pine, Lolita, Bar No. I, Bar No. 2, Curt, Sun, Helen, Itoe, and Frog. They are early breaks formed prior to the N.70°E. vein fractures. Mineralization occurs on them but, with several prominent exceptions, they are too low grade to mine. A number of northwesterly striking faults complete the structural pattern. Although they are relatively abundant, the effect on the veins is so small that they do not present any problems in mining or development. All of these faults that have been observed are later than the N.70°E. veins and offset them to the left. NORTHEAST FAULTS The early northeast faults* are notably continuous in spite of their small displacements, 20 to 100 ft. Frequently they appear so weak that their importance is masked and their identity clouded. The gouge along any of these faults may vary from exceedingly weak at one point to very strong at another point only a short distance away. In other words, the amount of gouge depends on the changes of attitude of the fault plane, and is no indication of the extent of the movement. Places where walls are spread apart are filled with gouge squeezed from tight places. Also, mineralization sometimes obscures fault gouges by replacement. The mineralization of northeast faults has produced several important ore bodies; namely, 231 west on Pine fault and q6 vein on the same fault. HIGH compression ratios, resulting from high injection pressures and relatively low recovery process pressures, constitute a major problem, which has confronted those engaged in gas recycling for condensate production since the beginning of that practice. Despite the numerous process developments and improvements, no entirely satisfactory solution for this prob-lem has been presented to date. Often, where the residue gas from the recovery process must be recompressed for subsurface injection, there is a substantial difference between the required injection pressure and the plant-operating pressure required to produce maximum recovery of condensate. These limitations result in high compression ratios, which, in turn, neces-sitate excessive compressor investment and operating cost. As an alternative, the operating pressure may be increased in order to lessen the compressor requirements but such a saving often is purchased at the expense of decreased condensate recovery, caused by operation at the higher pressure. Regardless of the choice, the net result is a diminished return on the capital invested in the project. The goal of future development in this field must be the complete recovery of all valuable hydrocarbon components in the reservoir fluid at pressures that, regarded as compressor suction pressure, will require minimum compressor horsepower to inject the residue gas into the formation. A com-pression ratio of 1.5 has been established as an optimum for modern compressor equipment." Therefore, in order to con-form to this optimum condition, a 3000-lb. injection pressure would require that the condensate recovery process be operated at 2000 lb. per sq. inch.

Discussion of the paper of James Douglas, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 29, May, 1909, pp. 439 to 451. JAMES DOUGLAS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*) :-In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker&apos;s report for .1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the markets for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908 1 does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. To quote again from his report, lie says (p. 241): "The year 1908 was not marked by any notable gain in the construction of by-product coking plants, though some new work was done. There was a net increase of 115 in the number of completed ovens in 1908 over 1907, the totals for the two years being, respectively, 3,892 and 4,007. The additional equipment consisted of 140 Koppers regenerative ovens built at Joliet, I11., by the United States Steel Corporation, but this increase was partly offset by the dismantling of Y5 Semet Solvay ovens at Sharon, Pa., the net gain being 115 ovens. Included in the total of 4,007 completed ovens in 1908 are 152 Newton-Chambers ovens at Vintondale, Pa., but as no recovery of by-products was made at this plant in 190S, the production of coke is included with that from beehive ovens. The 56 ovens of the same type at Pocahontas, Va., have not been in practical operation since they were first. installed. In addition to these there was one other by-product plant of 120 ovens. Oat. was not operated during the year. The number of retort ovens producing coke in 1908 was 3,679, as compared with 3,811 active ovens in 1907." The selective dissolution of pyrolusite (MnO2) in presence of goethite (FeO•OH) in aqueous ammoniacal ammonium carbamate solution has been investigated: various reducing agents were studied, in particular sodium sulfite (Na2SO3,) and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4•H2O). Sodium sulfite was found to be an unsatisfactory reducing agent for both goethite and pyrolusite, for the leaching rate decreased steadily with time to an impractical level because of the limited solubility of the reactions products. Hydrazine hydrate was an effective reducing agent for pyrolusite even at low temperature, whereas goethite required much higher temperatures for any appreciable dissolution. A 1-hr leach at 35°C dissolved 90% of the pyrolusite but only 0.1% of the goethite. An activation energy of 17.0 Kcal per mole was found for the dissolution of pyrolusite with hydrazine. A reaction mechanism for the leaching of pyrolusite with hydrazine is proposed in which a reduction reaction on the surface of the mineral is the rate-determining step. The application of ammonium carbamate to the beneficiation of ilmenite is briefly described.

THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual stools.

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Mine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world&apos;s classic Archean gold deposits.

IN a previous study1 of the effect of heating com-mercial titanium in air on its subsequent friction coefficient against other metals, as well as itself, it was found that the friction coefficient markedly decreased from a value of about 0.7 to about 0.3. A tentative explanation was given that surfaces normally produced at room temperature are not contaminated sufficiently to prevent seizing or welding of the titanium to the softer mating metals. The latter tend to cleanse themselves during rubbing over the harder titanium. It was thought that the lack of a contaminant protective film on the titanium was due to the high solubility of titanium for oxygen and nitrogen and hence an inability to form a contaminant oxide or nitride. This explanation requires the ratio of the surface absorption rate to the diffusion rate to become much lower at room temperature than it is at high temperatures. In order to check the phenomenon further, commercial titanium specimens were nitrided or oxidized at 800°C for 20 hr in flows of prepurified N2 and 01, respectively, at about 1/2 in. H2O above atmospheric pressure. Friction runs were made in argon using a freshly cut copper hemisphere (cut in argon) on surfaces cut successively into the diffusion layers in the titanium (cut in argon) using the techniques described in a previous publication.&apos; DPH values (100 gram load) were made as a function of depth into the diffusion layer using a Tukon tester. Also, micrographs were taken at separate cross sections to indicate the diffusion layers. The results obtained are presented in Figs. 1 and 2, which show the "static" friction coefficient vs hardness for the nitrided and oxidized specimens, respectively. A separate measurement of the friction coefficient of clean copper vs iodide titanium also was made. From results reported in the literature&apos; giving the oxygen and nitrogen contents as functions of the hardness, cross plots were made showing the friction coefficients as functions of the amount of interstitial solute. These plots are given in Figs. 3 and 4. From micrographs of the diffusion layers and the phase diagrams, it was deduced that the data in Figs. l through 4 correspond to the single phase a region. The points observed on the compound regions have been excluded from the figures. It is apparent that nitrogen or oxygen in solution in the a titanium markedly affects the friction coefficient against a softer mating metal. Discussion of Results These results are extremely interesting from both a practical and theoretical viewpoint. The theoretical implications will be discussed first. According to Bowden, the friction coefficient should be given to a good approximation by the relation where a is the fraction of contact area that has welded, a is the shear strength of weaker component, and H is the hardness of softer component. Using this relation alone, it is difficult to understand the results because none of the terms should be affected by a variation in the oxygen or nitrogen content of the harder and stronger metal, titanium. Even if the ratio of S/H for titanium is used in Eq. 1, the ratio has been shown to be independent of oxy-gen or nitrogen content.&apos; If a more rigorous equa-tion is used combining Eq. 1 and a result given pre-viously" for the case where welding is absent, then the relation obtained is µ = a S/H + (1-a) a W aß/H where a is constant and Waß is the work of adhesion between the two metals comprising the friction couple. This relation states that if a is less than 1/2 or so, variation in the work of adhesion Waß between copper and the titanium should affect the friction coefficient markedly. It is reasonable to expect that the work of adhesion will depend on the oxygen or nitrogen content of the titanium. Available data4 show that clean metals and oxides have much lower works of adhesion than the same metals against the

DISCUSSION Judson S. Hubbard (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—In this very interesting paper several brief references are made to the Humphreys spiral, a device used for cleaning fine coal. In Table I, Plants 76 and 77, data are given on spiral performance treating Raton and Trinidad coal. The fine coal, as fed to the spiral in these instances, is actually a table middling, hence the more easily treated material was previously removed and a large number of particles were present which were difficult to clean. Mr. W. M. Bertholf of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. presented a paper in February, 1946, Cleaning Table Middlings from a Coal Washery with the Humphreys Spiral Concentrator, from which I quote: "In considering the results of our tests it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation is a &apos;moral victory&apos; as there is little material that could properly be called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequences being that previous attempts to clean the middling have not at all been successful." Referring again to Table I, Plants 72, 73, 74, and 75, these data were obtained by Yancey and Geer and others and presented at the February 1950 Meeting, AIME, in a paper entitled Laboratory Performance Tests of the Humphreys Spiral as a Cleaner of Fine Coal. Results shown for those tests involve all particles from 8 mesh through the colloids, which admittedly is not an ideal situation for spiral feed if much refuse is contained in the —80 mesh or —100 mesh size range. As an illustration of the effect of treating too broad a size range, let us consider Plant No. 75, Kentucky No. 9 seam. Spiral feed was 8 mesh x 0. Now had this been 8x100 mesh the percentage of misplaced material would have been 8.0 pct instead of the reported 15.26 pct. Similar comparisons can be made on the other data presented with respect to the spiral. Other types of equipment show a similar trend in that whenever too fine a size is treated in a given unit process the percentage of misplaced material increases. Since the spiral is working near the finer end of the size range, it will sometimes be advantageous to treat the entire range of —8 mesh material rather than to deslime and make a fair showing on, say, the +80 or + I00 mesh. Desliming is subsequently done in any case in the dewatering or thickening operation. Results obtained by spiraling any given coal depend on factors too numerous and complex to discuss here, but there are strong indications that proper preparation of feed to the spiral can improve results obtained on some of the raw coals tested. This is clearly pointed out at the end of the aforementioned paper by Yancey and Geer. "The spiral is an extremely simple device which involves no moving parts and is constructed almost entirely of unmachined castings. Since it is such an uncomplicated mechanism, operation is simple and virtually foolproof. These characteristics, which go far toward insuring low cost operation, are attractive attributes in any coal cleaning unit." Certain equipment used in conjunction with the spiral has resulted in a decrease in the percentage of misplaced material, notably in actual practice the launder screen which is used to remove objectionable high ash fines from a spiral-washed coal product. Private correspondence with the U. S. Bureau of Mines has intimated that an additional yield of coal is possible by flotation of the spiral middling. Possible future improvements and developments may result from other methods now under consideration. Finally, some compromise must be made between the best metallurgical performance and the best practical or economical results. Mr. Lyons emphasizes in his summary this objective of overall economy in selection of equipment. G. B. Walker (American Cyanamid Co., Stamford, Conn.)—I had the pleasure of reviewing the draft of this paper and my curiosity was aroused by the data given for Tromp plants, in that all of the examples shown appeared to be 2-product separations, whereas all the Tromp plants with which I am familiar have been 3-product units. The data given for plants No. 101 and 102 appear to be taken from Tromp&apos;s brochure on his process and represent the results obtained at the Dominale plant in Holland which was operated for many years by Mr. Tromp. The plant, which was designed to treat 58 tons per hr, was sampled while treating 35 tons per hr of 3Y4x-in. coal. Example 101 appears to conform to what would result if the middling product were calculated into the refuse product, while Example 102 represents the calculation of the middling into the coal product. It is believed that Examples 103 and 104 represent the operation of the Willem-Sophie Mine in Holland recalculated on the same basis. In checking the English examples given by numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17, the same procedure seems to have been followed. These results have, apparently, been taken from an article in Colliery Engineering in August 1941, describing the initial operation of the Williamthorpe Colliery of the Hardwick Colliery Co. Two vessels are employed in this plant, one to treat soft coal and one to treat hard coal. Example No. 14 presents the results that could be obtained from the soft coal bath if the middling were calculated into the refuse, and Example 15 the results when the middling is calculated into the coal. Examples 16 and 17 represent the same expedient in the case of the hard coal bath. Of interest to this discussion is the fact that during the past year the Simon-Carves Engineering Co. in England has installed in the Williamthorpe plant their new "Sim-Car" medium cleaning system which is based on magnetic extraction and control and which is licensed under the Heavy-Media Separation Processes patents by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. This system has been described in the December 1951, issue of Colliery Engineering. DISCUSSION Judson S. Hubbard (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—In this very interesting paper several brief references are made to the Humphreys spiral, a device used for cleaning fine coal. In Table I, Plants 76 and 77, data are given on spiral performance treating Raton and Trinidad coal. The fine coal, as fed to the spiral in these instances, is actually a table middling, hence the more easily treated material was previously removed and a large number of particles were present which were difficult to clean. Mr. W. M. Bertholf of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. presented a paper in February, 1946, Cleaning Table Middlings from a Coal Washery with the Humphreys Spiral Concentrator, from which I quote: "In considering the results of our tests it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation is a &apos;moral victory&apos; as there is little material that could properly be called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequences being that previous attempts to clean the middling have not at all been successful." Referring again to Table I, Plants 72, 73, 74, and 75, these data were obtained by Yancey and Geer and others and presented at the February 1950 Meeting, AIME, in a paper entitled Laboratory Performance Tests of the Humphreys Spiral as a Cleaner of Fine Coal. Results shown for those tests involve all particles from 8 mesh through the colloids, which admittedly is not an ideal situation for spiral feed if much refuse is contained in the —80 mesh or —100 mesh size range. As an illustration of the effect of treating too broad a size range, let us consider Plant No. 75, Kentucky No. 9 seam. Spiral feed was 8 mesh x 0. Now had this been 8x100 mesh the percentage of misplaced material would have been 8.0 pct instead of the reported 15.26 pct. Similar comparisons can be made on the other data presented with respect to the spiral. Other types of equipment show a similar trend in that whenever too fine a size is treated in a given unit process the percentage of misplaced material increases. Since the spiral is working near the finer end of the size range, it will sometimes be advantageous to treat the entire range of —8 mesh material rather than to deslime and make a fair showing on, say, the +80 or + I00 mesh. Desliming is subsequently done in any case in the dewatering or thickening operation. Results obtained by spiraling any given coal depend on factors too numerous and complex to discuss here, but there are strong indications that proper preparation of feed to the spiral can improve results obtained on some of the raw coals tested. This is clearly pointed out at the end of the aforementioned paper by Yancey and Geer. "The spiral is an extremely simple device which involves no moving parts and is constructed almost entirely of unmachined castings. Since it is such an uncomplicated mechanism, operation is simple and virtually foolproof. These characteristics, which go far toward insuring low cost operation, are attractive attributes in any coal cleaning unit." Certain equipment used in conjunction with the spiral has resulted in a decrease in the percentage of misplaced material, notably in actual practice the launder screen which is used to remove objectionable high ash fines from a spiral-washed coal product. Private correspondence with the U. S. Bureau of Mines has intimated that an additional yield of coal is possible by flotation of the spiral middling. Possible future improvements and developments may result from other methods now under consideration. Finally, some compromise must be made between the best metallurgical performance and the best practical or economical results. Mr. Lyons emphasizes in his summary this objective of overall economy in selection of equipment. G. B. Walker (American Cyanamid Co., Stamford, Conn.)—I had the pleasure of reviewing the draft of this paper and my curiosity was aroused by the data given for Tromp plants, in that all of the examples shown appeared to be 2-product separations, whereas all the Tromp plants with which I am familiar have been 3-product units. The data given for plants No. 101 and 102 appear to be taken from Tromp&apos;s brochure on his process and represent the results obtained at the Dominale plant in Holland which was operated for many years by Mr. Tromp. The plant, which was designed to treat 58 tons per hr, was sampled while treating 35 tons per hr of 3Y4x-in. coal. Example 101 appears to conform to what would result if the middling product were calculated into the refuse product, while Example 102 represents the calculation of the middling into the coal product. It is believed that Examples 103 and 104 represent the operation of the Willem-Sophie Mine in Holland recalculated on the same basis. In checking the English examples given by numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17, the same procedure seems to have been followed. These results have, apparently, been taken from an article in Colliery Engineering in August 1941, describing the initial operation of the Williamthorpe Colliery of the Hardwick Colliery Co. Two vessels are employed in this plant, one to treat soft coal and one to treat hard coal. Example No. 14 presents the results that could be obtained from the soft coal bath if the middling were calculated into the refuse, and Example 15 the results when the middling is calculated into the coal. Examples 16 and 17 represent the same expedient in the case of the hard coal bath. Of interest to this discussion is the fact that during the past year the Simon-Carves Engineering Co. in England has installed in the Williamthorpe plant their new "Sim-Car" medium cleaning system which is based on magnetic extraction and control and which is licensed under the Heavy-Media Separation Processes patents by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. This system has been described in the December 1951, issue of Colliery Engineering. ALTHOUGH by far the largest A consumer of platinum metals in the world, the United States until recently has been in- significant as a producer. Writing in the "Minerals Yearbook" for 1939, H. W. Davis states that 1938 probably marked the beginning of an- other period of transition in the world production of the platinum metals. In that year, he says, their production in the United States jumped to 49,380 oz., or fourth in the rank of world output. In the ten-year period 1925 to 1934 United States output ,averaged only 8300 oz. Practically all of this sudden in- crease in production is attributable to the introduction of mechanized equipment at the placer deposits in the Goodnews Bay district of Alaska. This district adjoins the Bering Sea and Kuskokwim Bay (accented on the first syllable), and is approximately 120 miles south of the mouth of the Kuskokwim River. The nearest village and post office is Platinum, which lies about eleven miles north- east of the Goodnews Bay Mining Company&apos;s camp. A good gravel road connects the mine camp and the village.

IN the latitude of Lima, the broad uplifted block that forms the Andes is made up of a complex sequence of folded and faulted sediments and volcanics, broken by large and small bodies of granitic rocks and porphyries with which the principal mineral deposits are closely associated in both time and space. The intrusives are a final episode in the geologic history as revealed by the consolidated rocks, for after their emplacement and after the formation of the primary ore deposits in and about them the record is simply one of long continued erosion and uplift.

TWO papers, "Calcium, Strontium, and Barium Metals," by Charles Hardy and Paul M. Tyler, and "The Mining of Gems and Ornamental Stones by American Indians," by Sydney H. Ball, were presented before the Rare Minerals and Metals group at its session Tuesday afternoon in the Auditorium. Donald M. Liddell, chairman, presided. Mr. Tyler summarized the first paper, outlining the uses, history, occurrence, manufacture, production and trade, markets and prices of the three metals. In discussion, in response to the chairman&apos;s query on "what are they doing in Russia with calcium, strontium, and barium," Guy C. Riddell replied that nothing is being done on a production basis. The great rare metals plant in Moscow is active, however, on other elements. "They are making radium chloride, uranium oxide, vanadium, cadmium, tungsten, molybdenum, selenium, antimony compounds; and mercury, nickel and arsenic are under production at interior plants. The rare metals plant is busily conducting research on beryllium, rhenium, lithium, bismuth, strontium and zirconium. These are the main rare metal activities. Much hard-alloy work. for cutting and facing, is under way:

The influence of the stress dependence of the dislocation density on the overall stress dependence of The steady-state creep rate is discussed. Experimental measurements of dislocation densities and creep rates jor an Fe-3.1 pct Si alloy tested over a wide range of stress are presented which indicate a close correlation between the two quantities. EXPRESSING the stress dependence of high-temperature steady-state creep rates has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past decade. From these investigations have emerged a few general equations which fit most of the available data reasonably well. Garofalo 1 has proposed that for a wide range of stress and temperature the creep rate, i, can be expressed by a relationship of the form: where A, ß, and n are temperature-dependent and is the applied stress. Eq. [I] gives a stress dependence of a at low stresses and exp(nßo) at high stresses, both consistent with experimental observation where n = 5. A number of other investigatorshave proposed a similar expression where: where m and w are in general functions of temperature. Theoretical justification for Eqs. 111 and [2J comes from two different approaches, theories based on dislocation glide3-5 and theories based on the balance between work-hardening and recovery.&apos; Dislocation glide theories predict where p is the mobile dislocation density and V is the activation volume. In order for Eq. [3] to predict a on stress dependence at low stresses with n = 5, it is necessary for p to be a strong function of stress, about proportional to u3 or u4.436 Recovery models of creep start with the general expression:&apos; where r is the recovery rate and h is the work-hardening rate, and then employ a detailed model to determine the stress dependencies of r and h. As example, weertman2 has described a model based on pile-up hardening which results in an expression similar to Eq. [2] with m = 2 and p = 2.5. A recent, seemingly more general approach suggested by McLean is to use Friedels dislocation network growth expression to calculate the stress dependence of r. This model predicts r = p 3,2 and, as h is taken to be a relatively weak function of stress, the stress dependence of i should be about proportional to p3, 2. Once again, it is required that p be a strong function of stress to yield i This recovery model is by no means complete as the stress dependence of network growth is calculated in the absence of an applied stress meaning that r should probably be a stronger function of stress than given by p3, 2 and also some recent work by Mitra and McLean8 suggests that the stress dependence of h may be as large as Because of the importance of the stress dependence of p in determining the overall stress dependence of the strain rate it seems reasonable to examine this relationship in some detail. ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility.
