BERYLLIUM is one of the most interesting of the minor metals and distinctly a modern development, for until the last two decades it had practically no commercial importance whatever. Then it was discovered that when small quantities of it were alloyed with copper, a copper alloy of unusual and valuable qualities resulted. This is by far its major use-in the manufacture of strong, heat-treated copper-base alloys in which the beryllium content varies from about 0.3 to 2.5 per cent. Its second most important use, though much smaller, is in the form of oxide or other nonmetallic products in the fluorescent lamp, X-ray, cathode ray, and television industries. Certain beryllium salts have the quality, in common with several other materials, of transforming short-wave radiation and cathode rays to visible radiation. Such materials are commonly known as phosphors, and the beryllium salts are the most important phosphors now in use. The third largest use for beryllium is for ceramics, including refractories. Beryllium is also used in small quantities in the form of the metal itself.

Atmospheric pressure viscosity values For light hydrocarbons were calculated by a simple mixing rule based on the Sutherland constants for pure components. This method was further extended so that the atmospheric pressure viscosity of a mixture may be calculated based on the molecular weight information only. INTRODUCTION A proven method for estimating the gas-phase viscosity of a mixture is the one by Herning and zipperer.l This mixing rule has the following form: One method for calculating the pure component viscosity i is the Sutherland equation,2 which has the following form: The Sutherland constants B and S are determined from experimental data. A set of Sutherland constants for light hydrocarbons based on the data of several investigators3-5 is presented in Table 1. APPLICATION The Herning-Zipperer equation and the Sutherland equation were used to obtain an equation for calculating the gas-phase viscosity of light hydrocarbons. This equation has the form, Eq. 3 was used successfully in the study of methane-n-butane mixtures.6 Further analysis indicated that the Sutherland constants are a function of molecular weight.7 The gas-phase viscosity may be calculated based on molecular weight information only. The following equation was developed: The atmospheric pressure viscosity of ethane, propane, n-butaneand four methane-propane mixtures calculated on the basis of Eq. 6 are compared with the data of other investigators in Tables 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. A plot of atmospheric pressure viscosity vs molecular weight based on Eq. 6 is presented in Fig. 1.

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders % in. long. MATERIAL used throughout this investigation was high-purity aluminum (99.998 pct). The 1/2-in. cubes were cut out of a cold-rolled slab and annealed at 550°C for 1 hr before deformation. The single crystal specimen was 1 in. in diam x 0.33 in. thick, cut from a cylindrical crystal produced by cooling at about 55°C per hr in a furnace which had a convenient gradient of about 10°C in every 4.5 in. vertical crucible length. Specific data on the ten specimens studied are summarized in table I. Three types of deformation were employed: (I) compression in a hand-operated hydraulic press; (2) impact with a 7-lb sledge hammer; and (3) rolling, using a wedge-shaped specimen' to obtain a gradient of deformations varying from 0 to 50 pct along the length of the wedge. Specimens were either deformed at room temperature, or first cooled in a freezing mixture of dry ice and ether at a temperature of —72°C and then deformed between steel blocks cooled with dry ice. The specimens deformed at the low temperature were ground and polished through 000 emery paper and wheels impregnated with alundum and alumina No. 1. During this entire procedure the specimens were dipped frequently in the freezing mixture of dry ice and ether in order to maintain constantly a frosty surface as insurance against overheating. All specimens were given a final electrolytic polish, using two different electrolytes* to insure that the surface effects observed were not char- acteristic of the polishing technique. With both electrolytes, the annealed specimens gave even surfaces with good polish. Several standard etchants were tried without success. The best results were obtained with an immersion etchant, developed in this connection, containing: hydrofluoric acid, 4 parts; nitric acid, 1 part; glycerine, 3 parts. Discussion of Results Typical strain markings have been observed within deformation bands, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 4. By stereographic plotting of metallographic measurements, the strain markings within a deformation band in a single crystal of aluminum deformed by compression were found to be traces of (111) planes within a maximum scatter of 6". The edges of the deformation band were found to be traces of the (100) planes also within the maximum scatter of 6" (in agreement with previous workers). At 30 pct deformation, this scatter was considered quite normal because of the fragmentation and rotation of the crystal. This solution, based on the traces on one plane of observation is not unique, but as the planes were observed to be those normally and logically to be expected, further work in this regard was not felt to be necessary. The study of strain markings in a wedge-shaped specimen, rolled to obtain a gradient of deformation from 0 to 50 pct, revealed prominent strain markings at 25 pct reduction in thickness (fig.5). Faint and weak strain markings were visually observable up to a minimum reduction in thickness of about 12 pct. Since strain markings have been observed in other face-centered cubic metals after much smaller deformations;1, 2 and since the rate of recovery in aluminum is high, it is believed that, at lower deformations, self-recovery removes the localized strains at the slip interfaces, thus removing the source of the etching effects that give rise to strain markings. At high magnifications, strain markings sometimes seem to appear as very thin, light-banded re-gions bounded by a pair of dark edges. This so-

This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

A GOOD DEAL of information concerning flotation has come out during the patent litigation of recent years, and the legal situation has cleared considerably, to the satisfaction of Minerals Separation, Limited. Hence, Mr. H. Livingstone Sulman, one of the originators of the successful process of that company, felt at liberty to explain, on Thursday, Nov. 20, his experience and his views in a "Contribution to the Study of Flotation," before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. He did not give technical details. He dealt with the physical problems, so simple, as he remarked, that he had wanted 96 pages to express his views. He presented much data, partly new and based on observations of his own, bearing upon the very complex flotation phenomena in an instructive wav and made frequent references to the valuable researches especially of Prof. Edwin Edser and Mr. Emil Hatschek.

FOR MANY YEARS lead and zinc have had the so-called protection of a tariff and it is the purpose of the following brief discussion to show what' such protection actually accomplishes with a view to forecasting the possible results of the present copper tariff. In analyzing the subject, tabulations of the United States production, consumption, imports and exports, including ore and concentrates and all of the metallic products, of both lead and zinc have been made for each year since 1900. Of these data, the relationship of the imports and exports and the relative foreign and domestic prices are shown in Table 1. The conclusions drawn from these figures are listed below. 1. The United States is an exporter of zinc. 2. The United States is an importer of lead. 3. The average price of zinc at St. Louis for the last 32 years has been no higher than on the London market even though zinc and zinc ore have "enjoyed" a protective (?) tariff of varying amounts per pound for 22 years of this period. 4. The average price of lead on the New York market for 32 years has been 1.2c. per pound higher than on the London market, the tariff varying from 0.75 to 1.5c. per pound of lead in ore, and 1 to 2c. or more on manufactured lead.

Recent work on grain growth in high purity aluminum and in a solid solution type alloy of aluminum and magnesium1 showed that the isothermal increase of the average grain diameter D with time follows the equation D = K(tg + A)2 Eq 1 Here tg is that portion of the total annealing time 1, which is available for grain growth, that is the annealing time less the time necessary for complete recrystallization. The parameters A and n depend only on the temperature. A has the dimension of time, and is usually of the same order of magnitude as the time for recrystallization: R. In some instances R may be substituted for A in Eq I. This is the case for example at long periods of annealing or at high temperatures, where both A and R become small in comparison with t. In such instances Eq I is simplified to D = K, tn Eq 2 For high purity aluminum the exponent n increases in the ratio of about I to 5 in. the temperature range of 350' to 6w°C. 70-30 brass has been long known to exhibit grain growth of the continuous type, such as occurs in pure metals. For this reason, it was of interest to determine whether grain growth in brass also follows Eq I and 2 as it does in aluminum. Isotherma1 grain growth data for 70-30 brass were published in recent years by R. S. French2 and by H. L. Walker.' Fig I shows a log D vs. log t plot of French's data, together with the 500, 600 and 700°C data by Walker for 42.8 pct reduction by rolling. In such a log D vs. log t plot Eq 2 corresponds to a straight line with a slope of n. As seen in Fig I, the data of French and the 600°C data of Walker can be represented by straight lines. However, the 500 and 7c0°C data of Walker give curved lines and the average slope of his 500°C line is very different from the slope of the line representing French's data for the same temperature. Furthermore the curvature of the 700°C line suggests a tendency for grain growth to stop after 8 hr. If confirmed, this would constitute a definite deviation from Eq 2, not explainable on the basis of the specimen thickness effect found in high purity aluminum.' Walker's specimens were 0.125 in., or 3.18 mm thick, while the deviation occurs at a grain size of approximately 0.4 mm. A further point of divergence arose recently, when J. E. Burke suggested4 on the basis of Walker's data, that, instead of Eq 2, grain growth in 70-30 brass follows the equation D - D, = K . tgn Eq 3 Here D, is the grain size as recrystallized at the temperature in question. Although it was possible to show5 that, for pure aluminum, for which isothermal grain growth has been carefully investigated, Eq 3 is incompatible with the experimental facts, the situation remained somewhat obscure with respect to 70-30 brass. R. R. Knobler and F. E. Albertson—Following the testwork done by Thunaes and Spedden, a Sullivan deck plant was built for the Colquiri mill. This plant started to operate in April 1945 and continues in successful operation. Since May 1950 the Colquiri mill has operated with a completely revamped flowsheet at a rate of 1000 tons per day. The old Sullivan deck section was retained with this new flowsheet. The "slime plant" in Colquiri consists of one 12-cell Denver No. 18-Sp. Sub-A flotation machine, one 16-ft and one 12-ft hydroseparator, six five-deck Sullivan-frames and six shaking tables for cleaning up the Sullivan deck concentrates, as well as 12 Deister plus three Plat-O tables on which the fine sands, which are not treated on the S-decks, are concentrated. Only —325-mesh fines are treated on the Sullivan decks. The combined hydroseparator overflows are fed to the S-decks. From 1946 to 1949, i.e. with the "old" flowsheet and an average mill feed of 800 tons per day an average of 45 tons per day was treated on four Sullivan rougher frames. The two additional frames were used as cleaners. At times, up to 90 and 120 tons of slimes were treated successfully on this Sullivan deck installation. The average operating data for the S-deck section in Colquiri for the year 1949 were as follows: The tests reported in this paper indicated a tin recovery of 42 pct. The actual plant results for 1949 show a 54 pct tin recovery from the Sullivan decks. The total average quantity of tin produced from the S-deck section in 1949 was 15 tons of tin per month. This corresponds to 3 pct of the total mill recovery. The difference between the 6 pct overall recovery-increase expected after the tests in 1943 and the actual plant results given for 1949 is explained as follows. AT various times during the past quarter century proposals have been made that the basic Federal mining law of 1872 be repealed or amended, and that in its place a new and simpler law be enacted to provide for the entry upon, working, and the taking up of claims on the unallotted Federal mining lands in our western states and in Alaska. Serious discussion and study have been given such proposals but little has resulted there from, except perhaps a lively interchange of opinion and the conclusion that though the Apex law of 1872 is in many ways highly unsatisfactory and frequently a fomenter of strife and trouble, it still bids fair to remain with us. Under this act a greater part of the non-ferrous mining industry of the United States has developed. With all its short-comings it is the legal bridge that has carried over the innumerable caravans of adventurers and prospectors who explored our mining frontiers. For without any amendments of substance this act has for fifty-eight years been the guide in the location of our western Federal mineral claims and has stood unchanged during the most important period of our mining history. While Federal and state acts and amendments have been ground out by thousands and tens -of thousands the mining act of 1872, with a :strange tenacity, has remained as constant as the Rock of Gibraltar, and under it states, mining districts, and local customs have developed different codes for its application but its fundamentals have been unaltered. "Use doth breed a habit in a man"; until now the application of the law of 1872 has become a second mining nature.

TWENTY-ONE of the states in the Union, the Territory of Hawaii, and seven provinces of Canada now have in operation laws requiring that professional engineers be registered or licensed. In addition, two states require that civil engineers be registered, and one other state demands registration of structural engineers. Moreover, nearly every year sees additions made to the list. The registration movement, fostered by the American Association of Engineers, now has the powerful, energetic backing of the An1,erican Society of Civil Engineers, which is itself now fostering registration legislation, and there is a strong sentiment in favor of registration in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Only in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is anti-registration sentiment, strongly dominant, but many members of this organization are enthusiastic advocates of registration.

INDUSTRY has the right to expect the petroleum engineering schools to supply more than the minimum technical qualifications necessary to obtain or discharge the responsibilities of a particular job. The basic training, social and economic orientation, should go far beyond these minimum requirements. Petroleum engineering students should also be well grounded in the history of the oil business so that they may understand the industry's progress since the advent of the Drake well. Furthermore, according to P. H. Bohart, the schools "have a definite duty to help the students form a workable philosophy of life, which includes an appreciation of the service of science to mankind, and a belief in the obligation of the individual who enters a profession to exalt himself by continuing his studies and growth so that he may never cease making contributions to the advancement of science and industry."

UPWARDS of 200,000 engineers in this country are sufficiently interested in engineering as a profession to have joined a society, but not over 10% of them belong to any one society. There is a widely-felt need of an over-all organization of all the societies to act as spokesman for all engineers on matters of common concern. On a local basis, over 100,000 engineers in 35 metropolitan areas have organized themselves into local councils, and are doing an effective job of intersocietal co-operation within their sphere of activity. In the last few years much has been said and written about a similar organization on a national scale. Everybody wants iteverybody is talking about it-it's in the air-it's coming-it's inevitable. Although it is no longer necessary to talk about why or whether there should be such an organization, there is no such unanimity about what it should be like. This paper outlines a proposed organization by answering four questions-who, how, what, and who will pay for it.

INTRODUCTION THE Wisconsin zinc district, or the Upper Mississippi lead. and zinc district as it is also termed, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, and embraces adjacent portions of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant, and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, and Jo Davies county in Illinois. In Iowa, Dubuque formerly produced considerable lead, but there has been little mining there in recent years. The map, Fig. 1, shows the entire district, with roads, railways, streams, and the various towns, or "camps," around Which the mines. are clustered. The hatchwork indicates the areas iii which lead and zinc have been mined. The district is about 60 mi. (96 km.) north and south and about 40 mi. (64 km.) east and west. Not all of the territory is mineral bearing, and there are considerable areas that are believed to be barren. The grouping of the mines is patchy and irregular, though certain broad zones of mineralization extend almost the full width of the district, as from Mineral Point west through Mifflin and Livingston, and from Shullsburg west through New Diggings and Hazel Green. It is worth noting that the best mines of the district have, to date, been found within 10 mi. east or west of the fourth principal meridian line, thus lying within a long, narrow, north-and-south belt extending the length of the district. In a field as large as the Wisconsin, which has only within com-paratively recent time been worked intensively for zinc, the. chances are good for, opening new and important orebodies in parts of the district not yet, or insufficiently, prospected. However, the prospecting has been most successful around, or adjacent to, the old lead diggings of nearly a century ago, and the camps that were well known then are still centers of activity. In their order of importance they are: New Diggings, Benton, Mifflin-Livingston, Galena, Linden, Hazel Green, Shullsburg, and Highland.

The rules of solution of oxygen from H2O-H2-He gas and of nitrogen from N2-H2 gas in shallow melts of liquid iron were measured at 1610o and 1600o C, respectiuely. Concentration profiles were detemined in the liquid iron. Tire rate data indicate that the solution process is controlled by diffusion in the iron melt. The diffusivities for oxygen and nitrogen in liquid iron, as calculated from the present data, are DFe-o = (12 ± 3) < 10-5 sq cm per sec and DFe-N = 11 ± 2) X 10-5 sq cm per sec at the temperatures employed. AN attempt was made by Shurygin and Kryukl to measure the diffusivity of oxygen in liquid iron. In their experiments a silica disc was rotated in liquid iron containing oxygen, and the rate of formation of liquid iron silicate was measured. Assuming that the rate of dissolution of silica is controlled by diffusion of oxygen in the iron, the oxygen diffusivity was computed from the rate data giving Dfe-0 = 6.1 X 5 sq cm per sec at 1600°C. Although this value seems to be of the right order of magnitude, there is no proof of the correctness of the assumptions involved in the interpretation of these rate data. The oxygen concentration in the iron at the iron-iron silicate interface was taken to be that in equilibrium with the silica-saturated silicate melt. That is, it was assumed that no concentration gradient existed in the liquid silicate. This is a questionable assumption, unless it is proved that the thickness of the silicate layer is very much smaller than that of the diffusion boundary layer in the iron. Furthermore, Shurygin et al.1 used the Levich equation2 to interpret their rate data. This equation was derived for mass transfer between a solid disc and a single-phase liquid. The hydrodynamic and diffusion boundary layers in the iron stirred by a disc, via coupling of the silicate melt, may be appreciably different from those predicted by Levich&apos;s derivations. In the present work the diffusivities of oxygen and nitrogen in liquid iron were measured at 1610" and 1600oC, respectively. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Iron melts contained in high-purity gas-tight alumina crucibles were reacted with H2O-H2-He gas for the determination of the oxygen diffusivity and with N2-H2 gas for the determination of nitrogen diffusivity. At the end of the reaction period, the samples were quenched in a cold H2-He gas stream at the top of the furnace. Oxygen or nitrogen contents in the iron were determined by chemical analysis. Two different types of diffusion experiments were perforxed. To determine concentration profiles, a few rate measurements were made using 4-cm-deep melts. The solidified samples were sliced into discs and each disc was analyzed for oxygen or nitrogen. In another series of experiments, oxygen or nitrogen was diffused into shallow melts (about 0.5 to 1 cm in depth) and the total sample was analyzed to obtain an average concentration of the diffusate. In most experiments, 4- to 5-mm-ID alumina crucibles were used. Some experiments were also made in smaller (3 mm) and larger (7 mm) diam crucibles. This variation in diameter caused no difference in the reaction rate, within the limits of experimental uncertainty. To promote the establishment of a stable density profile in the melt, all the samples were suspended in the lower end of the hot zone so that the top of the melt was hotter by a few degrees. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The reaction tube of the furnace was a gas-tight recrystal-lized alumina tube. In most experiments the furnace was heated by an ac power supply. To check the possibility of inductive stirring, some experiments were carried out in a dc operated furnace, with essentially the same results. The temperature of the furnace was controlled automatically in the usual manner. The temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within ±5°C. The iron used was prepared by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zir-conia crucible. The main impurities are: Si 0.004 pct P, S <0.002 pct Cr 0.005 pct N 0.001 pct Zr 0.002 pct O 0.003 pct Mn 0.004 pct C 0.002 pct The gas composition was controlled by constant pressure head capillary flowmeters. Oxygen was removed from the gas mixture by passing it through columns of platinized asbestos (450°C) and anhydrone. Selected H2O contents were obtained by passing the purified gas through oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid mixtures held at constant temperature in a water bath. Water vapor pressure data for the oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid equilibrium were taken from the 1iterature.3 The flow rate used was about 1.5 liters per min. The whole system was checked for tightness at regular intervals.
