Ground-based electrical geophysical techniques have be valuable for three indirect exploration strategies: "tracer" sulfide mineralization, 2) mapping structure with or controlling mineralization, and 3) mapping proven to 1) mapping? associated alteration zones. When sulfide mineralization is associated with gold, it often can be mapped using induced polarization (IP). This technique can detect pyrite in amounts as small as 0.2% by volume, and in some cases can distinguish pyrite from anomalies due to graphite and clays. A case history illustrates mapping sulfides in a shear zone. Structure and alteration mapping are often the domain of controlled source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) due to the superior lateral resolution and depth penetration of this technique. Typical CSAMT targets include silicified sediments and volcanics, faults, brecciated zones, argillic alteration, clay and graphite horizons, and certain lithologies. Examples of mapping silicification and mapping epithermal alteration are presented in CSAMT case histories over Cannon mine in Washington and Hishikari mine in southern Japan. In our experience, four things are needed to use geophysics effectively in precious metals exploration. First, the explorationist must correctly identify the exploration stage at which the geophysics is most useful. Second, the explorationist must clearly define the types of "tracer" mineralization, host geology, or alteration which need to be defined by the geophysics. Third, the right electrical technique needs to be applied to the problem to provide the best chance of success. Fourth, the explorationist must be willing to commit adequate finances to do the geophysics properly. With careful adherence to these principles, geophysics can greatly enhance exploration success while reducing the total cost of exploration.

MINERAL EXPLORATION 'The Function of Exploration Mineral exploration aims at locating the presence of economic deposits and establishing their nature, shape, and grade. As all ore bodies are finite, exploration is essentially the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is divided into two phases, reconnaissance and target investigation. It involves geological mapping, geophysical prospecting (aerial and ground or both), geochemical surveys, prospect drilling, and/or exploratory under-ground workings. Successful exploration is followed by development drilling, mine development, and eventually operation. In underground mining, the term "ore" is applied rather loosely to metalliferous rock that can be profit- ably mined, but nonmetallic industrial minerals and energy related materials constitute a large and growing portion of the tonnage extracted by underground methods each year. It is appropriate, therefore, to consider exploration as the search for any useful substance occurring in the earth or in the oceans that is of sufficient value as to volume, grade, chemical and physical com- position, and location as to make extraction by mining commercially profitable for the investment required. The Selection Process The search for ore includes hundreds of mineral commodities. The more successful exploration organizations tend to restrict the search to the mineral commodities for which they have strong exploration expertise and which have a high probability of being concentrated in areas open to exploration and development in sufficient volume, grade, and proximity to the surface to warrant the large expenditures of risk capital in finding an ore body. Special expertise is needed to engage in mineral exploration and development for the extended periods required for success. Individual prospectors continue to discover mineral occurrences, but it generally takes an organization with strong financial resources to carry the exploration process forward to the point of developing "ore." Still greater corporate resources in the form of management, engineering, and sales capability are needed to develop an ore body into an operating mine. In the past, companies other than those engaged in mining rarely conducted exploration, since they lacked the technical skills and know-how to bring a mine to fruition. A notable trend in recent years has been the success of other resource-oriented firms, such as petroleum companies, that have not only acquired the necessary skills to engage in exploration for hard minerals, but are doing so on a far more intensive scale than known in the industry heretofore. The desire to diversify from increasingly regulated oil and gas, the potential for the discovery of a bonanza, and the large scale of mining projects for these capital-intensive firms are the attractions. US government and certain international organizations, such as the United Nations, have fielded sizable exploration programs in the past decade on behalf of Third World countries wherein many of the world's higher grade deposits and scarce mineral resources are located. The level of overall mineral exploration in the industry is, regrettably, closely geared to the business cycle. Accelerated search during the periods of strong demand, shortages, and high prices, together with the long lead times necessary to develop mineral finds, often creates surges in supply which invariably are followed by a collapse in prices. The trend is, therefore, to exploration funding by larger better-endowed firms having the staying power to weather the cyclical nature of mining. Tax incentives, tariff policies, and other incentives have a decided impact on the level and nature of exploration. Surface mining regulations and environmental forces have fostered a renewed interest in under- ground development despite the lower average costs of surface mining. Spiraling inflation has caused mining costs to outpace prices for many mineral substances. Organizations increasingly are directing their search away from high- grade but limited tonnage occurrences toward low-grade disseminated bulk tonnages amenable to mining on a vast scale. Mining continues, therefore, to grow even more capital-intensive with half-billion-dollar mine-mill- smelter complexes now commonplace, compared with the hundred-million-dollar projects of a decade ago. Reconnaissance Exploration Having elected to search for specific mineral commodities, the exploration company narrows its focus to a reconnaissance of those regions offering the best potential. A working hypothesis which is constantly up- dated concerning the geologic controls for ore occurrence guides the search. The possibilities for discovery are best in areas of existing mines and known ore bodies, where the probabilities are high for additional ore occurrences. In such areas, published data on the trends and geologic controls of known mineral occurrences aid the search. Even in some remote territories, a variety of geologic data is available to the explorationist. The major sources of basic geologic data are the libraries of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the state geological surveys, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the US Bureau of Mines, and various institutions such as Colorado School of Mines. Overseas, virtually all of the countries have their own geologic survey groups which are associated directly, or indirectly, with their respective ministries of mines. The objective of reconnaissance exploration is to narrow the search by pinpointing target areas having interesting mineralization. These favorable areas are then investigated in detail to delineate potential ore bodies.

Spiraling costs in every segment of the open-pit mining cycle is a fact of life that every operator must reckon with. The introduction of various shock absorbing devices for rotary drilling is one recent innovation that may significantly reduce overall drilling cost, increase drill availability, and lower maintenance requirements. In a recent all-inclusive test in taconite ores, shock absorbers on Bucyrus-Erie BE 60R and Gardner¬Denver GD 120 rotary drills were directly responsible for overall savings of up to $41.06 per hour. What is It? A shock absorber is simply a device installed between the rotary drive head and drill steel that cushions the two. It functions in the same manner as springs and shocks on an automobile. Some benefits associated with use of the tool are readily apparent on a daily basis; other benefits are realized over longer time intervals and through continued use. A properly designed shock absorber will: •protect the drill from severe vi¬brations, improve rock bit performance, allow application of the best weight-on-bit and rotating speed under all drilling conditions, •function effectively over a wide range of applied bit weights, • have a spring rate soft enough to perform its primary function of absorbing both rotary and vertical vibrational forces generated by rough drilling, •be reliable and subject to as little maintenance as possible, •be easy to install and remove, and • be of such an economic benefit so as to offset the added expense of its application. A shock absorbing tool developed by BJ-Hughes Inc. was used in a recent test. The "Smoothdrill" is just one of the products currently available. This unit absorbs both rotary and vertical shock loads and has no mechanical parts so lubrication is unnecessary. A rebuild of the unit consists of removing the worn rubber element and inserting a new element, an operation taking less than one hour. Minimizing Vibrations Severe vibrations on a blasthole drill operating in broken and discontinuous formations have visible effects. These vibrations often cause structural damage when allowed to' continue, resulting in fatigue cracks in the mast and related structural components in the drill. When rough running formations are encountered, drilling must be interrupted and possibly shut down. Usually, the drill operator resumes drilling using less down pressures and various rotational speeds until firmer drilling is encountered. An effective shock absorber can substantially reduce these vibrational forces so more down pressure can be applied in bad ground. It is generally accepted that longitudinal vibrations and cyclic forces are more effectively reduced if a tool is designed to incorporate a relatively "soft" shock absorber. The softness of any shock absorbing tool is best judged by its spring rate-the weight required to produce a given amount of deflection, commonly expressed in units of kg per mm or pounds per inch of deflection. "Despite the difficult economic climate for the mining industry, more than 6,300 people joined SME for its 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 21-24.Nearly every commodity has been bruised and battered during the past year, leading to one of the more difficult cycles for the industry in the past decade. Coal has taken some of the hardest hits and other commodities, such as copper and iron ore, have felt the sting of a slower growth in China and an oversupply on the market.The difficult conditions could not be ignored, but they did not deter SME from offering a forum for the industry to share knowledge, network with peers and learn about the best products and practices while visiting the sold-out exhibit hall (844 booths and 627 vendors) or while attending any of the 121 technical sessions that were offered.The current state of the industry was one of the overriding themes of the conference and during the challenging times there are often cutbacks as operations look to become leaner and more efficient, however, there is one area that cannot be cut – health and safety.The conference kicked off with a fascinating presentation from Colonel Mike Mullane, a former NASA astronaut who, in 1978, was selected as a Mission Specialist Astronaut in the first group of space shuttle astronauts. He completed three space missions and logged 356 hours in space aboard the shuttles Discovery and Atlantis before retiring from NASA and the U.S. Air Force in 1990.In his speech to a packed audience, he warned of the dangers of cutting corners to get the job done more quickly by guarding against the “normalization of deviance.”Normalization of deviance is a long-term phenomenon in which individuals or teams repeatedly accept a lower standard of performance until that lower standard becomes the norm. Usually, the acceptance of the lower standard occurs because the individual or team is under pressure (budget, schedule, etc.) and perceives it will be too difficult to adhere to the original higher standard. Their intention may be to revert back to the higher standard when this period of pressure passes. However, by getting away with the deviation from the higher standard, it is likely they will do the same thing when the same stressful circumstances arise again. Over time, the individual/team fails to see their actions as deviant."

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Open cut-and-fill stoping for many years was prob¬ably the most widely used mining method in under¬ground metal mines. Then for a time this method was largely supplanted by the blasthole stope. It again be¬came popular as many mines reached depths or grades where methods requiring large open voids to remain open for extended periods of time became unsuccessful, often as a result of excessive dilution. The open cut-and-fill method is very flexible and is readily adaptable to almost any ore body. The standard application requires that a slice of ore usually 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) thick be removed from the back of the stope, and as the ore is taken down, the back is dressed and rockbolted. After the back is secured, the broken rock is removed through rock passes to the level below. When the rock has been removed, the rock passes are extended upward the height of the ore removed, the stope is backfilled, and another cycle is mined. This method is best employed in plunging ore bod¬ies with considerable vertical extent, ore areas that re¬quire selective mining, ore areas where weak wall con¬ditions exist, and ore bodies that have an ore value that will carry this relatively expensive mining method. Blast¬hole stoping, shrinkage stoping, and other mining meth¬ods that do not employ rock passes in a stope are not efficient in plunging or flatly dipping ore bodies because the footwall makes ore removal quite difficult. Since mining is accomplished by taking down slices of the back, only small areas of the wall rock are exposed at any one time, and these only for short periods. Due to limited back height, areas of uneconomic rock may be left in place, or they may be mined and the material gobbed in the stope. Because the miners in the stope must work under freshly blasted areas, the amount of ground control is usually great. The volume of rock that is broken during one section of mining is relatively small and the amount of nonproductive work required is high. This results in limited productivity for the scope and, be¬cause of the nonproductive work that must be done on a regular basis, the production from the stope may be quite cyclical. SUITABLE ORE BODIES The open cut-and-fill method may be adapted to al¬most any type of ore body with a relatively high vertical extent. The ore body must be accessible at both top and bottom as well as at regular intervals throughout its vertical extent. Although adaptable to most ore bodies, the method is probably best employed where the ore has poor con¬tinuity and where most types of bulk mining would pro¬duce excessive dilution. In areas of poor ore continuity, the capability of continuous and extensive sampling dur¬ing the mining of each cycle makes this method very desirable. This capability also minimizes the amount of evaluation sampling that must be done before mining is started. Because of the extractive system used, the size and shape of the stope may be as readily changed as the sampling mandates. Probably the only ore characteristic demanded is that the ore has strength enough to be sup¬ported through the use of rockbolts or cable bolts dur¬ing the mining and backfilling cycles. Good planning, systematic sampling, and careful supervision will pro¬duce a product with less dilution than any other open stoping method. PLANNING Evaluation Planning Once it has been decided that the open cut-and-fill method would be the most efficient for mining a par¬ticular ore body, the next considerations would probably be the availability of an economical backfill material and the selection of an efficient transport system for this material. Although hydraulically transported mill tail¬ings are the most widely used product, this is not always practical due to mill location or the quality of the tailings. In such cases, backfilling may be used. The type of backfill and the type of equipment used will determine if a floor or capping on the backfill is required to minimize dilution during ore removal. The early selection of rock removal equipment is im¬portant since equipment usually determines the amount of development work required to bring a stope into pro¬duction and the size of the openings needed. The size and continuity of the ore body will usually determine the type of loading equipment. The use of slushers or load¬haul-dump (LHD) equipment captive in the stopes will minimize the amount of development. If the ore con¬tinuity is such that a ramp system for extraction can be used, the cost of development will be increased but the flexibility of continuous mining will minimize the cycli¬cal nature of the production. The height of the mining section usually is deter¬mined by the strength of the wall rock and the amount of back bolting required. Once this has been decided, the appropriate drilling equipment can be chosen. The number and sizes of the rock passes employed depends upon the type and size of the extractive equipment and the type of backfill that is to be used. Since the miners must enter and leave the stope each shift, the level inter¬val is usually maintained at approximately 45 m (150 ft). Access from the level above into the stope must be main¬tained at all times. The employees perform all the work in the stope and adequate ventilation must be provided. Stope Planning Due to the flexibility of the method and the vari¬ability of the ore zones, layout is usually done on a stope basis. In areas where continuity is a problem, the size of the stope is usually determined by the boundary of the ore (with all of the ore within that boundary being removed). In areas of good continuity where ramps are to be used, the length of the stope may be determined by the length of time each of the cycles (preparation, back¬fill, mining, and ore extraction) requires. Mining activity is important for the development of humanity. This development must be understood from the Academy where it allows showing alternatives for the industry performance. Likewise, these mining companies need to improve their results. Historically, a few years ago the application of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criterion was verified, which is positioned as a factor/regulator in the design of the performance of industries in general. ESG as an integral part of the concept of sustainability serves as a tool to conceive mining without conflicts and with a reputation based on trust in the interrelation of the university, industry and society. Therefore, the academy must strive for new knowledge in a way that allows it to continue in the virtuous circle of constantly feeding it. In this context, the best mining practices are implemented in constant questioning of their activities. The scientific essence of the industry supported by the academy developed in an operational dynamic is addressed. Finally, the objective of this research work is to interrelate 3 variables: ESG, Academia, and the Mining Industry, where the transition of knowledge and the role of each variable in relation to each one can be understood. This allows for an additional understanding of mining in the future with new mental attention.

"Millennials. Doesn’t the word just make your blood boil? You’ve probably encountered one of those kids who think they know best despite a lack of any real experience.Hi, my name is Erica, and I am a Millennial. We often get a bad rap, sometimes for good reason. But we do have qualities that are often overlooked. For example, I am happy to share with my generation a real desire to make a difference in the world and a commitment to innovation. Does this mean I think we always have good ideas? No – especially not right away. After all, few of us came anywhere near a piece of construction equipment until arriving for our first job, as was the case for me. We may have fancy degrees, but not many of us learned to run a jackleg drill in school.Two weeks after graduating college in 2011, I packed up my bags and moved to New York City to work as a field engineer for Traylor Bros. Inc. on the Queens Bored Tunnels project (Granite/Traylor /Frontier Kemper, JV), part of NYC MTA’s multi-billion dollar Long Island Railroad East Side Access project. It was here I became acquainted with the notorious New York City union workers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of my career thus far was earning the respect of the field supervision and craft workers on this first project.The first time I asked a maintenance mechanic to clean a piece of equipment in accordance with our maintenance protocol I got a flat-out “No.” It was the most powerless I had ever felt. But why should these experienced workers trust a 21-year-old girl with her civil engineering degree and no prior experience? I realized no employee on the job had any reason to listen to me — not until I proved my worth. Fortunately, I arrived on the job site just as we were commissioning the slurry plant for the first tunnel drive. I dove into learning as much about the slurry tunneling process as possible and was able to quickly pick up the ins and outs of running the slurry separation plant. As none of the other engineers or management had first-hand experience on a slurry tunneling job, I soon became the go-to engineer in the slurry plant. No one questioned me if I asked to have something done around the plant after that, or if they did, they quickly learned that I had a convincing answer as to the need for the task. I was even able to play a large role in shaping our slurry monitoring and control methodology."

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum mining complex is located near Arequipa, Peru. A 108,000 t/d copper concentrator (C1 concentrator) commenced operation in late 2006 and was debottlenecked to a 120,000 t/d capacity in 2011. A feasibility study, initiated in May 2010, assessed the potential for expanding the processing rate of the large Cerro Verde sulfide reserve via the installation of a second, stand-alone, concentrator (C2 concentrator) capable of processing a nominal 240,000 t/d ore. The feasibility study was successful and the project advanced through engineering, permitting and construction. Ramp up to nameplate capacity was ahead of schedule. The overall project was completed on schedule and within budget. The details of the project and supporting components are described. The design philosophy and design basis of the concentrator facilities are discussed as are factors that influenced the concentrator layout. Risk mitigation features included in the design are reviewed. The factors that drove the successful and rapid ramp up to nameplate capacity are discussed. Operational experiences in the first year of plant operation and project lessons learned are described. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV) operates a copper mine near Arequipa in southern Peru. Small scale operations operated intermittently until 1970 when the deposit reverted to the ownership of Minero Perú S.A (Peruvian government). Minero Perú S.A. commenced mining and processing of oxide reserves in 1972 and placed an SX-EW plant into production in 1976. The ownership of the property has changed hands several times over the years. Minero Perú sold Cerro Verde to Cyprus Climax Metals in 1994. Cyprus was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1999. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007. Several studies were undertaken during the 1990’s that tried to establish the economic justification to process the large primary sulfide resource that underlies the surface oxide deposit. None of these studies produced an economic conclusion until a feasibility study was completed by Phelps Dodge and SMCV in 2004. This study provided the economic justification for the construction of a 108,000 t/d concentrator during 2005 and 2006. The key to the success of this study was identifying a water source that was sufficient to support processing economies of scale. Concentrator operations commenced in late 2006. The original design production rate of 108,000 t/d was achieved on a 30 day moving average basis on the 266th day after ore was first introduced. During 2009, studies and evaluations were performed that had the objective of addressing observed concentrator bottlenecks to allow a production rate of 120,000 t/d to be achieved. The 120,000 t/d figure represents the sustainable production limits associated with the installed primary crusher and tailing thickeners which would have been prohibitively expensive to upgrade. Debottlenecking activities were implemented during 2010 allowing sustained production rates of 120,000 t/d to be achieved."

In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted by-products generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining; (2) dyke construction schedule; (3) size, shape, and location of tailings-cells; and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailings-cells designs, decreasing the mining-cells volume and increasing the number of mining-cells improve the net present value of the operation due to increased operational flexibility. The model generated a uniform schedule for ore and practical tailings-cells designs for backfilling activities. Integrating tailingscells optimization into oil sands mine planning and waste management ensures the efficient use of in-pit mined-out areas required for sustainable operations.

We in the coal industry, especially in the State of Illinois, put tremendous emphasis, including time, money and effort, into on-the-job training. The results of such training and safety have been tremendous. For example, in 1981 Illinois was the first major coal producing state in the history of coal mining to have zero mine-related fatalities. And in 1985, I am very proud to say, we had the second best record in the history of coal mining, with only two fatalities. Obviously, one fatality is one too many. Our goal is, has been and will continue to be to strive for excellence. It is sad, however, that in 1981 while were were celebrating zero fatalities in the workplace, there were 21 fatalities that occurred off the job. Thus, it has become a classic American story. Success with safety has been found in the workplace, but training and preparation to prevent accidents away from the job site have almost been ignored. Accidents are the leading causes of death in the United States for all persons age 1 thru 38, and are the fourth leading cause of death for people of all ages. Every single day, on the average, more than 290 Americans are killed in accidents - a rate of one every five minutes. The leading cause of fatal accidents in the U.S. is motor vehicles. And the number two cause is home accidents. A staggering statistic is that people are being killed off the job at a rate of about 9 to 1 over those on the job.

This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

At 6 percent downgrade to a low point beneath California?s Sacramento River, the Lower Northwest Interceptor Sewer was a difficult project from the outset. Project owner Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District (SRC-SD) planned to excavate the V-shaped tunnel in two sections using an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in soft ground. Muck removal, due to the steep downgrade, was a tricky proposition. ?We did look at muck cars, but determined they were not the best option due to the relatively steep slope of the tunnel alignment. The safety benefits of conveyors on this job were obvious, as there were not the potential hazards associated with muck cars traveling on an incline or derailing,? said Steve Norris, senior civil engineer for SRCSD The successful project represented one of the first instances of a conveyor system being used for a soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) application. Several projects in California, including a recent tunnel completed in 2009, have highlighted a growing acceptance of conveyor muck removal in a variety of ground conditions. Conveyors offer higher system availability than more common methods, such as muck cars, as they allow for continual operation of the TBM. The design of conveyor systems must, however, take into account the differences in material between soft ground and hard rock, including belt cleaning features, sealed transfer points and other elements.

At the 25th Peruvian Mining Convention, the start-up of Antamina was called ?the mining event of the year.? Antamina, one of the largestcopper-zinc mines in the world, began operations in May 2001.Augusto Baertl is Executive Chairman of Compañía Minera Antamina, the operating company. He said in a convention address that Antamina would be in full production in 2002. ?I would like to stress that Antamina is, in every respect, a highly stringent operation, as it intends to be the Peruvianmine of the future,? Baertl said. ?Antamina has set the target of being, and remaining throughout time, a model mine as to technology, environmental practices and social responsibility.? [ ] In the areas of technology and operations, Baertl noted that ?we have incorporated the best engineering design available and state-of-the art technology for mining, grinding and transportation processes, among others.? In the environmental area, he said that ?we have carried out careful environ-mental impact studies and have incorporated modern technologies and methods to control and minimize any environmental impact.? In the social field, Baertl noted that ?our relationship with neighboring communities is being developed under the premises of the social responsibility philosophy.? These include popular consultation processes, environmental committees and conciliation discussion committees. The purpose, he said, is to encourage communities located within the area of influence of the project to find and lead by themselves their path toward sustainable development, beyond the life of the operation itself.?

As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a $3-billion project that will link Dulles International Airport with the downtown center of Washington D.C. by way of a single seat train ride. The project is mostly above ground, but it does include two short, yet complex, tunnels through the area of Tyson?s Corner. The project is being completed in two phases. The Dulles Transit Partners (DTP), led by Bechtel, was awarded the first phase, a $1.6-bil-lion phase that includes 17 km (11 miles) of track with five stations. At Tyson?s Corner, the project includes twin 730-m- (2,400-ft-) long, 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter tunnels. Bechtel is self-performing construction for the $1.6-billion design-build job. Gall Zeidler Consultants was hired by DTP as designer for the NATM tunnel portion of Phase 1, and Beton-und-Monierbau was hired as tunnel subcontractor. Tyson?s Corner is an affluent and congested area that sits 152 m (500 ft) above sea level. To get through the area, it was decided that tunnels would be the best option with the least amount of disturbance to the surrounding areas. However, with extremely shallow groundcover above some points as well as soft soil throughout, the tunnels are also the most complex aspect of Phase 1. About 213 m (700 ft) was constructed utilizing the cut-and-cover method. The remaining 518 m (1,700 ft) is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method, which integrates the principles of the behavior of rock and soil masses under load, and monitoring the performance of underground construction during construction. ?The tunnel only falls 2 m (7 ft) from one end to the other and we pass through two soil conditions, they are both soft ground,? said Dominic Cerulli, tunnel task manager for Bechtel. ?Soft ground is very tricky because you have to close the ring in a timely manner to minimize settlements at the surface. If you don?t close the ring quickly to achieve a round structure that?s good in compression, the tunnel could start necking and squatting and the ground above it will settle. We are under major roadways, so excessive settlement would be a bad thing.?

There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.'s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel involves a 1km long tunnel beneath the Fraser River from Surrey to Coquitlam, BC. At depths of up to 60 m below ground, the earth pressure reached 6 bar. The tunnel is constructed using an EPB TBM and gasketed precast concrete segmental liner. The tunnel and two shafts were constructed in a variety of soil conditions ranging from soft to stiff clays and silts, to compact to very dense sands and gravels. After approximately 800m of mining, a very dense and highly variable soil group consisting of cobbles and boulders halted the TBM. Several options were considered to stabilize the TBM face so an intervention could be conducted. Although de-watering was considered, there was risk of settlement to the Port Mann bridge piers, which was within 500m of the tunnel. Hyperbarics were also considered, however, the cost, schedule and uncertainty of the work that needed to be done, made it a risky option. Ground freezing by Liquid Nitrogen was chosen as the best solution, which would provide a frozen block around the face of the TBM. A temporary platform on the river was designed and constructed to enable drilling and installation of the freezing pipes and temperature monitoring equipment. The operation required close coordination among the tunnelling, marine and freezing sectors. Following the intervention, the TBM successfully broke through the reception shaft, and the remaining project was completed. This paper describes the design, construction and operational approaches used for the freezing and serves as a basis for future projects requiring expedited ground freezing."

Despite significant safety improvements, the mining industry remains one of the most hazardous occupations globally and the evacuation of Miners, when an uncontrollable incident occurs in the mine, is the best bet to saving lives. However, Human factors/behaviors during an emergency are likely to influence the evacuation performance. Other industries have made a significant effort to determine these human factors that can impede evacuation performance, however, the current state-of-the-art in mine evacuation or self-rescue is that the evacuation route is predetermined, and a static sign is used to direct miners to the predetermined safe location. This method is limited in representing actual conditions that arise in a real emergency, neglecting the different behaviors displayed by humans. As optimization of the evacuation of a mine plays a fundamental role in emergencies and modeling evacuation behavior and movement of miners is a complex task, this research utilized Agent-Based simulations to simulate the evacuation behavior and performance. It was observed that people with the smart evacuation device made fewer mistakes and arrived at the safe place in less time compared to those have no access to the device. The Mathematical model used in optimizing the shortest path to a safe place is also explained in this paper.
