In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began implementation of a supervisory expert control system at a U.S Cu concentrator. The objective of this control system was to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and integration. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and associated benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The implementation of expert control at this concentrator has resulted in an estimated benefit of $50,500 per day. This is a net result of improved tonnage, reduced reagent consumption, improved concentrate grade and reduced energy per ton produced.

The specific lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh coalbed, highly resistive limestone and sandstone units with relatively shallow overburden, prevent the use of any predictive method as developed for European conditions. This paper describes the development of a subsidence precalculation methodology suitable to the mining-geological conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field. It has been found that due to lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh coalbed the subsidence coefficient varies within the area of the subsidence trough. This is different from the European conditions where the subsidence coefficient is considered to be a constant. The effects of lithology, in-the form of a variable subsidence coefficient, have been separated for each test site by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithological conditions, while providing for different mining conditions. Field data from eleven Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the regression analysis. For each panel the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient along individual profile lines were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation with a coefficient of correlation of 0.9999. All sensitivity tests have shown good results.

For practical purposes, the terms "natural frequency," "resonance" and "critical speed" are synonymous. A part passing though its "critical" or "critical speed" may also be said to be "resonant" or "resonating." The vibrations of a precisely balanced part can be magnified by the structure in which it is assembled. Anyone who has driven an automobile knows that it will vibrate more at a certain speed than at others. According to the formula for centrifugal force, vibration should increase steadily with a rise in rpm. What happens instead is that the vibration not only in- creases with r m. but suddenly rises at a much higher rate through the critical speed, and then apparently smooths out as the rpm passes beyond it. To visualize what happens, consider a simple flat spring with a weight mounted at one end. When the spring is deflected by pulling down on the weight and then letting it go, the spring will oscillate, and the spring-and-weight system will vibrate at its natural frequency. If the timing or direction bf the impulses imparted to the spring did not coincide with its natural frequency, the result would be an irregular vibration that would not build up. If, on the other hand, the timing and direction of the impulses did coincide with the spring's natural frequency, the result would be a larger and larger amplitude. If the impulses were continued indefinitely, the amplitude of the spring's vibrations would go on rising [while its frequency stayed the same] until the spring broke or the amplitude of the vibrations reached an equilibrium [because frictional or other forces would tend to damp it]. Resonance magnifies the amplitude of vibrations in a relatively undamped system between 100 to 200 times over that of nonresonant vibrations. Frictional or viscous damping often reduces the magnification [from 10 to 20 times], but even with this reduction the amplitude would still be large enough to cause excessive wear, and sometimes even fractures. For example, a blower might show only 0.001 in. of vibration on the manufacturer's test stand. Installed, the blower could pass into its critical speed [the speed at which the frequency of the vibrations caused by the rotor coincides with the supporting structure's natural frequency], and the 0.001 in. of vibration could be resonated to 0.010 in., or as much as 0.020 in. The cure for such a condition would not be to lower the vibration of the blower by further balancing or better alignment but to separate the two frequencies by at least 20 to 30%.

Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) is building an international, multi-stakeholder community to advance the availability and use of standards and industry guidelines for the global mining community. Standards and guidelines are key strategic tools for operational excellence, enabling companies to move forward with efficient, innovative operations with reduced risk. Launched in May 2012, the GMSG is the first international center to bring together information, resources and collaborative projects for mining standards and guidelines, in an open, knowledge-sharing forum. The GMSG is supported by five partner organizations providing outreach and helping to guide GMSG activities: the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Surface Mining Association for Research and Technology (SMART). GMSG was formed under the CIM Surface Mining Society, though its mandate extends to include underground mining as well. ?SME is supporting the GMSG as a key international activity to advance the implementation of standards and guidelines in our industry, and to provide a forum for our members to access, and contribute to, projects and information to assist their operations,? said SME Executive Director David Kanagy. ?We see the GMSG as a good example of ways the major mining associations can work together for the benefit of all our members.? The GMSG charter encompasses all standards and guidelines that apply to mining; however, a number of subject areas are now being spearheaded by six working groups, namely: ? Access and usage of data from mobile mining equipment onboard systems. ? Operational safety. ? Situational awareness (namely, a unified equipment operator interface). ? Underground operations. ? Asset management and operations data definitions and KPIs. ? Energy in communition.

"When MacLean Engineering chairman and founder Don MacLean got the first question from a minesite about the possibility of addressing ventilation limits through incremental fleet electrification, he was intrigued. It was back in 2015, and the MacLean scissor bolter was already diesel-electric (jumbo trailing cable), so it made sense to him that if they could engineer a battery drive system for the unit’s tramming cycle, they would have the inaugural electric vehicle (EV) MacLean unit.At that time, there were not any entirely diesel-free hard rock mines in existence on the planet, and that remains the case to this day — although the Borden project in northern Ontario is progressing toward that goal (see page 33). This meant there was essentially zero market demand for battery electric vehicles as well as a complete lack of battery technology to address the battery electrification of heavy haulage. Heavy haulage is the part of a typical mine’s mobile fleet with the largest footprint when it comes to diesel particulate emissions, greenhouse gases and wasted energy in the form of heat.Three years later — the wave of battery electrification that is currently picking up speed across the mining industry promises to hit full swing by the early 2020s when a slew of new build, diesel-free mines will start construction. But this movement toward emissions-free mobile fleets is not a completely new phenomenon. Instead, it is an updating of mining technology from a previous generation. What is going on now is the re-electrification of mining. Up until the 1960s, early generations of battery technology (lead acid) and electric locomotive systems were the norm for material and ore haulage in Canada and elsewhere.The thought of a coming paradigm change in mining was particularly pertinent to Don MacLean back in 2015, as he had been part of the era that ushered in the first generation of rubber-tire diesel equipment, when he was a divisional foreman with Inco in Sudbury in the 1970s. He was part of the operating team that was tasked to build a rail loop on one extraction level of the mine. At that time, events on the ground overtook the project, as diesel-powered mobile equipment became a viable option. Once the first diesel scoop was introduced at Creighton #3 shaft, it was clear what the power, haulage capacity and mobility could do for operations and that era of electric rail haulage underground was effectively over."

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's controlling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, what are the basic ingredients for good plant control? For good plant control, two requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

The Bardon Trimount, Inc. stone quarry in Ashland, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a quarry closure review report. The quarry produces aggregate using standard drilling and blasting techniques. Stone is processed at an on-site plant. Noise monitoring data collected during the closure review indicate that the quarry generally operates within the quiet range. There is a decrease in noise while the quarry is not operating. Levels of dust associated with the quarry are low. Unpaved roadways are the greatest contributors of fugitive dust associated with the mining operation. The quarry cannot be seen from any homes within the town of Ashland, except during the winter months. The visual impact of the quarry on surrounding properties is minimal. Further quarry development is likely to reduce visibility of the quarry from some areas.

Proximity Detection Systems (PDSs) are used in the mining industry for protecting mine workers from striking, pinning, and crushing injuries when they work in close proximity to heavy machines such as continuous mining machines (CMMs). Currently all Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved PDSs are magnetic field based systems which can be influenced by the presence of wire mesh that is commonly used for supporting roof and ribs in underground coal m ines. In this paper, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterize the influence of the mesh on the performance of magnetic PDSs by measuring the magnetic field difference around a CMM caused by the presence of the mesh. The results show that the magnetic fields are generally enhanced by the mesh which causes the PDS detection zones to be increased correspondingly. It was discovered that the fields around the joints of two mesh sections have the greatest enhancement and thus deserve more attention. In addition, it is found that the presence of mesh can also cause a variation in the generator current. The influence of mesh is characterized by the change in the generator current with respect to the distance between the generator and the mesh. It was found that the generator current change caused by the mesh can be significant (on the order of ten) when the mesh is extremely close to the generator (e.g, less than 1 cm) and is negligible when mesh is relatively far (greater than 0.15 m). The findings in this paper can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to mitigate the influence of mesh on PDSs. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines (CMMs) with proximity detection systems (PDSs) to protect mine workers from striking, pinning and crushing injuries when they work around these heavy machines. Although a variety of technologies can be implemented for proximity detection, the magnetic-field-based PDS that was originally developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown great effectiveness in challenging mining environments and currently all MSHA-approved PDSs are magnetic-field-based systems. As shown in Figure 1, a magnetic PDS typically includes two major components----the magnetic field generator and the Miner Wearable Component (MWC). Magnetic fields are generated by injecting a high electric current into a ferrite-rod antenna sealed in the generator. The magnetic field strength detected by an MWC varies with the distance between the MWC and the generator. In a typical PDS, multiple generators are mounted on different locations of the machine. The relative location/zone of an MWC is determined based on the field strengths from different generators picked by the MWC. Ideally, for a PDS to work properly in the underground, the magnetic fields generated by the different generators should be stable and not vary with the environment, as the system would interpret any variation of the magnetic field as a result of the distance change between the machine and the miner wearing the MWC. In reality, however, this is not always the case since magnetic fields can be altered by a number of environmental factors such as the presence of steel wire mesh that has been widely used in underground coal mines for supporting roof and ribs In this paper, the influence of mesh on the PDS performance is investigated and the magnetic field change caused by the mesh is measured.

Introduction and Objective of This Paper Computerized open pit mine models* are more and more used today for feasi¬bility studies as well as for long range mine planning. In fact, using these models is becoming an enforced practice due to various reasons. One main reason is its capacity to evaluate several designs in a fraction of time required by manual effort. Another reason is the necessity to evaluate several. pit designs due to ever decreasing grade of the orebody and increasing financial risk due to smaller profitability margin. In spite of today's accepted use of computer models, very little guidelines are available which the average practitioner can follow either to choose or to build the type of model best suited for his need. Consequently, the objectives of this paper are: 1. To review the current state of the art in the computerized open pit mine models. 2. To provide some suggestions for model selection. 3. To share our experiences in developing a model for a highly irregular copper ore deposit (see Appendix).

I work as the Bureau's Liaison Officer for Colorado and am one of 38 Bureau employees who are stationed, for the most part, in state capitals across the nation. These offices serve all 50 states and Puerto Rico--some being assigned more than one state. Our primary task is to seek ways to achieve a closer and more productive relationship between State agencies and the Bureau of Mines. In 1970, when the Bureau initiated this nationwide system, our activities were limited to mineral supply operations. The potential of the program was soon recognized and Liaison Officers became the personal representatives of the Director and responsible for con- ducting the business of the Bureau that is best handled at the local level. Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within dacite porphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding metasediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in metasediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna. Several new gold discoveries were made in older Early Tertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and utilize a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow con- trolling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

Efficient filtration of fine kaolin particles plays a crucial role in processing of raw kaolin to a marketable product. Oftentimes, filtration Is the rate controlling step of the whole process. As a consequence, plant production is dependent, to a great extent, on the rates being achieved In filtration. In order to alleviate the bottleneck in production, Nalco Chemical Company initiated a reagent development program to chemically enhance the performance of the filtration units. Filler aids of different classes were synthesized for evaluation. These include reagents whose primary mode of functionality were: coagulation, flocculation, thickening, and combinations of the preceding. All reagents that were synthesized and tested were listed under the appropriate Food and Drug Administration sections of the Code of Federal Regulations. This paper discusses the development and application of a new reagent that Improves the filter production rate with minimal Impact on filter solids. The results of laboratory filter studies along with plant data are presented and discussed. Plant data indicate that this reagent is capable of increasing production rates by as much as 35% on various clays of coarse particles to the finest fractions, as well as clays that are calcined. The reagent's Impact on solids content, re-slurrying characteristics, Brookfield and Hercules viscosity, and drying is within the standards set by plants who have evaluated and now use this product.

"INTRODUCTION This paper addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of Coal Exploration Results, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or “saleable” tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal – therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (“ROM”) and Saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information. Competent or Qualified Persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provide. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their Public Reports, which is as comprehensive as possible” (CRIRSCO, 2013): too often this isn’t the case and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed. According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document - “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw Saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the Saleable Coal Reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” As an example to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are highlighted. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a Calorific Value (“CV”) range of 19 to 20MJ/kg, an Ash content between 29 and 34% and Volatiles between 20 to 21%. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities such as a CV range of 22 to 23MJ/kg, an Ash content between 20 and 28% and Volatiles between 22 to 23%. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it isn’t just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station” (Chetty, 2010). Sulphur content is also another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1% Sulphur."

Modern ash handling systems exist in considerable numbers and a great deal of design and operating experience has been accumulated, It is the endeavor of this paper to point to a number of frequently recurring problems, A general appreciation of these problems will be helpful in both design and operation of systems. The light fly ash and the heavy bottom ash present different problems, and each will therefore be treated separately. Fly ash is collected in the ducting from the furnace to the stack and beneath the mechanical and electrostatic dust collectors. The greatest amount of dust is collected beneath the mechanicals and electrostatics. Hoppers are generally provided as integral parts of the collector. Suitable valves and piping are connected to these hoppers for removal of the dust. The size and shape of these hoppers are important factors in determining frequency of handling and the capacity of the system.
