Copper, the newest addition to the critical mineral list, is an essential metal whose electrical and heat conductive properties label it as a vital mineral for the creation of renewable energy sources and the reduction of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). However, despite copper’s leading role in the transition to sustainable energy and mining practices, the mining industry has faced various battles in the extraction of this valuable material. These challenges are based on mining’s negative reputation and extensive impact on the environment, nearby communities, and human rights. To ensure the survival of mining in the future and achieve mineral demands, an emerging topic that has initiated the revolution of the traditional sector into a more environment- friendly and transparent industry, is Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance (ESG). ESG has motivated companies to seek growth opportunities and standardize risk accountability and transparency based on its collective framework that creates, modifies, and implements local, national, and international standards. These standards focus on improving environmental, social, and governance issues faced by companies and their projects. ESG has served as a guideline that investors utilize to assess companies and promote sustainability, responsibility, and disclosure to create positive and balanced relationships with stakeholders and the environment. Nonetheless, concerns have been rising which state that ESG is negatively impacting the mining industry by targeting what fuels the industry and world: ore deposits and their resources. Therefore, this research focused on answering the following research questions: what are the impacts of ESG on the copper supply chain and how will stricter ESG standards affect future copper production?

"Tunnel professionals should inform project stakeholders on the reality that tunnel projects are not 100 percent devoid of the need for excavations or public inconveniences during both design and construction phases. Competing stakeholder objectives to limit these disruptions must be weighed against the need to mitigate risks and to produce a constructible, operable and maintainable end product. Perhaps the approach we should take with stakeholders, also known as Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), is sharing memorable case studies that bring to life the potential risks so often buried within lengthy risk registers. This paper provides a sobering case study describing what can occur if the presence and/or location of utilities and other obstructions are not fully understood due to restrictions placed on exploration or mining operations. In this instance, the Microtunnel Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) encountered a buried concrete structure, followed by rows of abandoned wood piles, before finally colliding with an active high-pressure gas main under a bustling coastal highway. Multiple stakeholders imposed tight logistical and other work restrictions, compounding the difficulties experienced during the drive. However, the difficulties were effectively managed through the project team’s proactive collaboration and communication with everyone involved. INTRODUCTION Some of the most important decisions that influence the ultimate success or failure of a project may not be made by design engineers. Instead, these decisions are often made by project stakeholders and third-party agencies. Tasked with protecting the best interests of their users, these agencies are cautious of potential impacts associated with project construction and subsequent use. Unfortunately, actions required (or restricted) by stakeholders often result in unwanted ripple effects that negatively affect the very users they are trying to protect. For example, a mandate limiting a shaft site to an unreasonable size may be intended to reduce local business impacts, but may actually increase impacts as more supply and truck hauling is required."

?We are certain there is need for research in every phase of mining." This statement by R. M. Crump of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company (047) paraphrases opinion widespread among mining people. It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".

A 63.5 metric tons per hour (70 TPH) demonstration coal preparation plant was constructed on the Iowa State University campus, Ames, Iowa, as a part of the Iowa Coal Project funded by the state of Iowa and administered through the Energy and Minerals Resources Re-search Institute. Processing equipment in the plant circuit includes a heavy media separator, concentration tables, separating and dewatering screens, and conveying equipment. Coal samples of size 907 metric tons (1000 tons) with sulfur contents ranging from 2.5 to 8.75% sulfur from seven mines in the state of Iowa have been pro-cessed in the plant. Sulfur reductions have averaged 35%. With ash reduction averaging 45%. Equipment for advanced fine coal beneficiation research is currently being installed in the plant to include a slurry pretreatment circuit, froth flotation, oil agglomeration, pelletization, hydrocyclones, advanced design thickener and disc filtration.

"In recognition of his inspiring dedication to the mining industry through education, research contributions and dissemination of practical knowledge, exceptional leadership and excellence in mining engineering practice and for his lecture, “You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.” Recipient of the 2002 D.C. Jackling Award Introduction It is always difficult to decide on the most appropriate title to give to a paper or talk. It is a particularly difficult decision in the case of the Jackling Lecture, because the title becomes part of the award citation. I hope that the significance of this unusual title will become crystal clear as you read the pages that follow. However, to assist you in this journey, I will provide the following few words of guidance. In making a cake, you need the proper ingredients. If one or more of them are missing, it will not be a cake. In addition, the quality of the cake depends on the quality of the ingredients. In my lecture, the "cake" is the U.S. mining industry of the future. A national perspective President George W. Bush in his State of the Union Address (Bush, 2002) delivered on January 29, 2002, defined three national objectives: •win the war on terrorism, •protect the homeland and •revitalize the economy. Under the heading "revitalize the economy," he indicated the importance of "good jobs" and "energy production" by saying: "Good jobs begin with good schools. Good jobs also depend on reliable and affordable energy. This Congress must act to encourage conservation, promote technology, build infrastructure and it must act to increase energy production at home so America is less dependent on foreign oil." I wish that he would have broadened his focus and stated instead that: "This Congress must act to encourage conservation, promote technology, build infrastructure, and it must act to increase materials production at home so America is less dependent on foreign sources." With regard to jobs, all jobs are not equal. To paraphrase John Reeves of MidContinent Resources (Reeves, 2002): "If our nation is to prosper, we all cannot make a living by doing each other's wash. Some of us, at least, must be actively engaged in the primary production of raw materials from the riches of the earth and other Americans must turn those materials into consumer products." The unfortunate trend in our country has been to neglect the primary production of basic materials, even those coming next in line. We have left those responsibilities to others while we concentrate instead on performing various services, i.e., doing each other's wash and flipping burgers. This cannot continue. It must be remembered, especially by those in leadership positions, that all "jobs" are not created equal. Some jobs are much more essential to the security and wellbeing of our country than others. We must be sure that the important ones are in place. We cannot produce the basic materials that our nation requires without access to those materials. This leads to my Proposition 1: You cannot have a viable mining industry without a clearly enunciated, positive U.S. materials policy. Background regarding U.S. materials policy Resources for freedom. In January 1951, President Truman created the President's Materials Policy Commission, with William S. Paley as chairman. As expressed in the invitation letter from the president to Paley: This commission, within the executive office of the president, is to study the broader and longer-range aspects of the nation's materials problems as distinct from the immediate defense needs. The task of the commission is to make an objective inquiry into all major aspects of the problem of assuring an adequate supply of production materials for our long-range needs and to make recommendations that will assist me in formulating a comprehensive policy on such materials. The commission should study, together with any other aspects deemed by it to be pertinent, such questions relating to production materials as: - the long-range requirements outlook; - the long-range supply outlook; - the prospect and estimated extent of shortages; - the consistency and adequacy of existing government policies, plans and programs; and - the consistency and adequacy of private industry practices.

Coal-fired power plants in the U. S. produce approximately 20 million metric tons of Hue-gas desulfurization sludge every year. The sludge mainly consists of calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. This can be converted to synthetic gypsum, which in principle could be a marketable commodity. However, many Hue-gas scrubbers produce sludges that do not meet the quality requirements of the gypsum industry, and so their sludges must be landfilled as a waste. If a suitable method can be developed for removing certain objectionable impurities from the sludge, it will then be possible to market the material instead of landfilling it. A sludge from a natural-oxidation scrubber was characterized, and the main contaminant was found to be calcium carbonate from unreacted limestone. Based on the particle size and the characteristics of the material, froth flotation was considered as a method for purifying the material. Since no flotation studies have ever been carried out to separate calcium carbonate particles from calcium sulfite or calcium sulfate particles, it was first necessary to select a suitable collecting reagent. Based on Zeta-potential studies, the most suitable reagent was found to be an octadecylamine-octadecylguanidine complex. Results are presented for flotation of calcium carbonate from scrubber sludge using this reagent, in a reverse-flotation process. The best results were obtained when the sludge was first pre-cleaned using a water-only cyclone to remove unfloatable coarse limestone, followed by froth flotation to remove fine limestone.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.

Field criteria are needed to help the prospector recognize a potentially expansible shale, clay, or slate. Certain criteria have proven useful in California even though the physical-chemical mechanisms of expansion are not thoroughly understood. Three conditions must be satisfied before expansion can take place, The raw material must partially fuse at a low temperature (1800-2000°F.), Concurrently a gas must form. The raw material must be sufficiently impermeable to trap the gas within the particle. Low temperature melting, which is controlled by bulk chemical composition, is difficult to assess in the field but most common shale, clay, and slate is suitable in this respect, The presence of organic carbon, the most common source of an expanding gas, is indicated by dark color of the rock, A large proportion of clay-sized particles promotes impermeability; fine grain-size is indicated by conchoidal fracture, The shape of the expanded particle is commonly indicated by the texture of the raw material. Rocks with well-developed slatey cleavage produce accordion-shaped particles; massive rocks tend to form rounded particles. Undesirable materials commonly present with expansible shale include: weathered shale; sandstone and other coarse-grained sediments; and limestone, Weathering, which is indicated by color, reduces or eliminates expansion; therefore, surface samples seldom are representative of the shale found at depth. Sandstone does not expand and will increase the average weight of the finished product, Limestone or particles of carbonate minerals can be actively harmful because they are converted to free lime (CaO) during the firing process, If free lime is present in concrete, hydration will cause expansion of the lime particles which result in surficial ?popouts.?

Acid rain legislation as proposed by President Bush [1], if enacted, will immediately refocus current thinking on the economic decision-making as related to coal preparation facilities. Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

The prime criteria in the design of underground openings with complicated geological structures is ground control. Stability of underground openings for deep mines is critical because incorrect orientation or geometry of shaft, stope, and accessways often results in the failure of openings due to high stress conditions. Current design procedures for complicated orientation and geometry of mines are rapidly becoming inadequate as mines are being developed. In this study, finite element method has been used with optimization criteria to design more stable and safe underground openings.

During the 116th National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition in Denver, CO, the host city was often referred to as world?s mining capital, so it was fitting that the conference looked at the mining industry through a global lens. In the current world economy, the mining industry must keep a sharp focus on such things as commodity prices and global supply and demand as well as local issues that can have a dramatic impact on a mine?s social license to operate. In short, companies should mine locally but think globally. During the three-day conference at the Colorado Convention Center, a range of global and local issues that effect the industry were discussed. A record 1,144 people attended the conference.

The Deep Leg Flotation Cell was developed to solve a problem which confronted the Smith-Douglass Company on moving from one mining area to another. Poor recovery and, to some extent, inferior concentrate grade were encountered in the silica flota¬tion circuit. This was believed due to the softness of the phosphate which caused it to form slime. In view of the urgency of the matter, the problem was attacked from two angles. The first involved the development of a flotation cell which would not create slime and the second, a new or improved reagent for floating silica from phosphate rock which would be less sensitive to slime than reagents currently in use.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

The amount of steel consumed per capita of the country is considered as a measure of development. The world average per capita consumption of steel is around 210 kg in 2007 (Yildiz, 2009).

Roofbolts with expansion anchors have been used at White Pine for more than twelve years, but always with an understanding that their performance was not entirely satisfactory. Some bolts fell out, some were obviously loose, and, when roof failures did occur, very few bolts actually broke. Obviously, there was an anchorage problem. A program was started in May, 1967, to define the problem and to solve it. This paper describes briefly those parts of the program which led to the development of a roofbolt assembly which performs much better in the medium-hard rocks at White Pine. As a result of the changes, significant improvements were found in the torque:tension, tension loss, and pull tests.
