The production of nickel coated mica composite powder by hydrogen reduction of a nickel ammine sulphate solution, followed by the production of molded plastic samples containing Ni/Mica is described. Sample preparation by injection or compression molding is outlined and the better results in compression molding are explained by the combination of better particle-to-particle contact, less particle breakage during processing, and more random particle distribution in the plastic. Three volume resistivity measurement techniques are described and compared. Two of them (conductive paint and silver-rubber electrodes) are found reliable and are used throughout the work. The influence of nickel content and particle size of Ni/Mica on volume resistivity is evaluated and the optimum product defined. One of the most important assets of Ni/Mica, its ease of injection molding, is demonstrated by the good electrical properties obtained with little optimization of the injection molding process. Surface roughness of molded plastics with and without Ni/Mica is briefly discussed. Shielding effectiveness of Ni/Mica in four plastics (PP, ABS, PBT and PC) is presented and correlated to volume resistivity data for the same materials. The addition of 15 to 50 weight % Ni/Mica (3 to 16 volume %) to plastics and subsequent injection or compression molding produces composite materials having low volume resistivities (0.03 to 1 ohm.cm) and high shielding effectiveness (40 to 70 dB).

The recent study by R. M. Hays(l) prompted the study summarized in this paper. In his Interesting paper, Mr. Hays shows fine results to be attainable by a relatively complex flowsheet on a semi-taconite, a manifestly difficult ore to treat. We obtained a semi -taconite from Minnesota, and treated this sample by wet magnetic separation alone. The device in which the separation was accomplished is the standard pilot-plant, laboratory separator in use at Magnetic Engineering Associates' laboratory (MEA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of a cylindrical space which can be magnetized by turning on the magnet of the separator. In this cylindrical space, there is a canister which provides the special configuration of the magnetic field and magnetic field gradients that MEA considers to be required. The ore pulp is made to flow through the canister while the current is on. A portion of the pulp is retained in the canister, and the rest is evolved as a non-magnetic fraction. The laboratory device is cyclic, but it accurately predicts the results obtainable by an Industrial unit of either cyclic or continuous type (moving matrix). The ore tested was 99.5°%o -325 mesh, and approximately 75% -500 mesh. The concentrate from this ore was, therefore, eminently suitable for pelletizing. In passing the ore through the magnet, we had the choice of repeatedly passing the concentrate from the first step through the operation, or of repeatedly passing the non-magnetics. The two most stringent parameters for in place fracturing of rock are the lack of any initial void space in the rock which to expand into and the ability to gain access only through drill holes. These two restrictions have proven so severe that as of today the only proven techniques for efficient fracturing are the contained nuclear detonation and hydrofracing. Both of these methods have highly developed technologies for their application. Hydrofracing has been a standard oil field practice for two decades, and the experience gained from a couple hundred underground nuclear detonations has resulted in a thorough understanding of the phenomenology of cavity and chimney formation. What is still lacking is a practical method to create a suit- able degree of fracturing for those ore bodies which do not meet the application criteria for either the nuclear explosion or hydrofracing. Nuclear applications must be restricted to thick ore deposits so as to take advantage of chimney collapse height--preferable in excess of 200 feet thick. Other requirements such as ground shock, containment, and radioactive contamination further reduce the number of sites that prudently can be selected.

The results of a previous basic study of the flow and design characteristics of the hydrocyclone has shown that a recovery as high as 99% with a product rating of 0.95 can be achieved on a "batch?2 basis with a single, water-only cyclone if it is configured properly. The next logical step was to demonstrate continuous processing of gob for the efficient recovery of coal by means of a laboratory-size demonstration system. A project to design and construct such a single-cyclone system was also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. A recovery of 93% with a product rating of 0.89 was demonstrated. The system design and the data taken are discussed.

The 2011 report titled ?Energy Critical Elements: Securing Materials for Emerging Technologies? by the American Physical Society?s Panel on Public Affairs and the Materials Research Society surveys potential constraints on the availability of these elements and identifies five specific areas of potential action by the United States to ensure their availability: 1) federal agency coordination; 2) information collection, analysis and dissemination; 3) research, development and workforce enhancement; 4) efficient use of materials and 5) market interventions. Energy-critical elements (ECEs) are a class of chemical elements that currently are critical to one or more new energy-related technologies. A shortage of these elements would significantly inhibit large-scale deployment, which could otherwise be capable of transforming the way in which energy is produced, transmitted, stored or conserved. The report addresses elements that have not been widely extracted, traded or used in the past, and therefore are not the focus of well-established and relatively stable markets (such as carbon in coal or uranium as fuels, copper, aluminum, nickel and iron, all of which are clearly vital in energy applications).

Commercial lime plants in the United States and Canada are depicted in Figure 1. The sources of lime available to Nevada and bordering states are rather few. Chemstar Lime has plants at Apex, Nevada and Nelsen, Arizona. Continental Lime, Inc. has plants at Tacoma, Washington, Townsend, Montana and Delta, Utah. However, Continental Lime has a new rotary kiln installation underway near Wendover, Nevada. This plant is scheduled to come on stream in the fall of 1989.

To start my talk, I thought it might be helpful for us to define the term "aggregate", so I went to the dictionary. Webster has several listings under "aggregate", and I found the following: "1. A mass or body of units or parts somewhat loosely associated with one another." Well, I didn't like that term "loosely" so I read on. "2. Crystals of one or more kinds of mineral or rock fragments." That sounded better, but I still read on. "3. Any of several hard inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete or mortar." That sounded even better, but it should be a little broader. So I would like to define "aggregates" for you as follows: "Hard, inert fragments of rock or minerals used alone or with cementing agents to form products essential to nearly all types of construction." Usually aggregates are sand, gravel, or crushed stone, but other minerals such as clay or shale can be heated and become aggregates. What are some of the construction uses? Well, we've already mentioned concrete, as used in streets and highways, sidewalks and parking lots, airports and all kinds of building construction, not to mention bridges and swimming pools, and docks and breakwaters, just to list some of the uses. Our way of life couldn't exist without concrete. And you can't have concrete without aggregates,

A large-scale work scheduling algorithm has been developed in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. This study basically concerned the formulation of a reliable mathematical programming model to handle the problem, the achievement of an efficient solution of the model, and the implementation of the algorithm to the worker assignment problems of a large underground coal mine. The results showed that the work scheduling algorithm can make optimal assignments efficiently. It is believed it has potential significance in improving manpower utilization and can offer great help to coal mine managers in making efficient manpower allocations.

Wet kata cooling power (WKCP) measured using a kata thermometer is a well-known heat stress index in mining industries. Although over the years several researchers have proposed different heat indices and indicated the limitations of the kata thermometer, it is still being used in many areas, especially in the South African gold mining industry, mainly because of its simplicity and rapidity of assessment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the newly developed empirical expression for WKCP, and some of the more prevalent empirical expressions. The analysis presented based on a regression technique aims to assess the disagreement between model predictions and actual measurements. It is found that the WKCP expresses bioclimatic interaction quite well under the specific parameter of interaction that explains the harsh thermal environment and air condition, such as metabolic activity, the person’s clothing, and the velocity of the air in which the person is working. The statistical analysis shows that the WKCP exhibits significant estimates to thermal stress under lower air velocities, light clothing, and higher metabolic activity rates.

The key motivation of this study is to evaluate the potential of well-known hazardous gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2)—as grinding aids for mineral liberation in ball milling. The results show that exposure of chromite ore particles to CO2 flow will promote chromite liberation at breakage and, therefore, using CO2 as a grinding aid may partially reduce the carbon footprint of the mining industry. For that purpose, the use of two-phase (gas–solid) or three-phase (gas–solid–water) moving-bed mixers are recommended for the pretreatment of mill feed before ball milling.

Underground blasting has many challenges. The primary aim of blast designers is to optimize drilling and blasting parameters to deal with the associated challenges. Optimizing these parameters is currently based on various rules of thumb, which have many site-specific limitations. Accordingly, computation of these parameters using empirical rock fragmentation predictors can be useful for blast designers. This paper presents the results of work on burden-spacing determination by back-calculation from the empirical Kuz-Ram model for underground stope ring blasting.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

In 1994, Claude Bazin presented a novel method for linking size data from milling models to the feed input of flotation models. It was achieved with the simple addition of a metal/mineral distribution–size distribution relationship. This allows grade and recovery predictions from a varying mine plan through product size distribution predictions. 

Several years ago, North American mining companies began to realize they needed to expand their spheres to remain viable. This strategy has been successful, according to Robert W. Schafer. Today, companies from other continents have also recognized the need for an international view for long-term growth and viability, he said. Schafer is vice president for exploration with Kinross Gold. He was the program chairman and moderator of the keynote session at the 1997 SME annual meeting, held in Denver, CO, Feb. 23-27. The theme of the meeting was "Minerals - Serving the Global Community." A record attendance of more than 6,000 people participated in the meeting, which featured 415 exhibitors occupying 582 booths. The title of the keynote session was "Corporate Perspectives on a Global Minerals Industry." Each of the three keynote speakers discussed a different perspective of a global minerals industry.

This study aims to investigate the optimal method for ore pass construction in incompetent rock masses. We evaluated the conventional and raise boring methods based on safety, efficiency, excavation control and ground support for ore pass construction. A stability analysis using analytical Q-raise (QR method) and kinematic analysis methods for ore pass construction with a raise borer before and after grout injection of the rock mass was performed. As a case study, an ore pass (diameter of 3 m, depth of 100 m) within an incompetent rock mass was considered to gain further insight. The rock mass was characterized according to the classification methods Q Barton, rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR) and geological strength index (GSI). The grout intensity number (GIN) method of grout injection was used. The safety factor of less than 1.075 obtained before injection was lower than the acceptance criteria. However, grout injection before raise borer excavation resulted in a safety factor greater than 1.5. Using a raise borer without pre-grouting indicated that the maximum unsupported diameter (MUSD) of the ore pass was less than the required 3 m and equal to or larger than 3 m post-grouting.

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

Early attempts to apply superconductivity to the beneficiation of kaolin required very large refrigerators to remove the heat generated during rapid charging and discharging of the magnet. In the early 1990's, Advanced Cryo Magnetics, Inc. developed and patented methods to reduce this pulsed heating by a factor of fifteen. Small, helium refrigerators and cryo-coolers are now used. Along with savings in electric power, superconductivity allows operation at higher magnetic fields and greatly improves separation process efficiency. New designs offer enormous reductions in weight, size and capital cost as compared to older copper magnets. Application of this technology to minerals other than kaolin is emerging.

Within recent years portable seismic refraction units have found their place in the industry for shallow investigations, Completely portable, relatively inexpensive and of proven accuracy, the portable refraction seismograph is an electronic tool in an electronic age. The age of electronic instrumentation has seen the development of seismic reflection and refraction equipment for deep exploration, especially in the petroleum industry. Large, expensive units, normally truck-mounted and utilizing explosives, are being used successfully for this type of sub- surface investigation. The portable seismograph utilizes the same theory for shallow work as that applied to deep refraction seismology.

The third edition of the Underground Construction Association of SME?s (UCA) Cut-ting Edge series of conferences focused on a challenge every underground construction and tunneling project faces: controlling ground water. The conference, held in New York City in November, is a partnership between the UCA and The North American Tunneling Journal. It featured more than 20 technical presentations by professionals from around the world. Each described specific challenges unique to their projects and the solutions employed. More than 175 professionals attended the two-day conference that included an exhibition featuring 17 companies. In addition to the technical program, the Cutting Edge conference featured a site visit to the $10.4 billion East Side Access Project. Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons and Reed Company, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, have successfully combined into two joint ventures on the San Juan-Chama project of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Azotea Tunnel is 12.7 miles in length; the inlet portal is on the Navajo River in Archileta County, Colorado, and the outlet portal is in New Mexico, about 10 miles south of the state border. The Oso Tunnel lies immediately to the north of the Azotea Tunnel and discharges water directly into it. We are presently driving both tunnels with mechanical boring machines from their portals at the Navajo River. Both tunnels are circular, fully concrete lined. The Azotea Tunnel has a finished diameter of 10 ft. 11 inches while the Oso Tunnel is 8 ft 7 inches in diameter. Both tunnels are supported with circular, structural steel rings as required by ground conditions. In good ground rock bolts and steel roof plates are used.
