The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

The London Metal Exchange began its first official session of aluminum trading on Monday, October 2, LME prices based on 3-month forward contracts opened Monday at 52.4 cents per pound, fell midway through the week to 52.3 cents and ended Friday at a high of 52.7 cents. For the week, LME metal averaged 52.5 cents. Although Reynolds Metals Co. and Aluminum Co. of American continued in September to value unalloyed 99.5 percent aluminum ingot at 53 cents per pound, other producers were at higher positions of 55-57 cents. Alcan Aluminum Corp. of Alcan Aluminum, Ltd., a Canadian producer, increased prices for its U.S.-marketed ingot by 2 cents to 55 cents per pound, effective September 21. New York merchants increased ingot quotes by approximately 0.5 cents to 52.8-53.5 cents per pound.

The feasibility of building a calibrator for the DuPont D-100 audio dosimeter is discussed. The desired specifications are used as guidelines but the possibility of their relaxation is also considered. Commercially available equipment is surveyed and found to not satisfy the guidelines. Several alternate concepts are investigated, and recommendations for further work are presented.

This paper is a progress report on the study of mining methods and costs in the western United States and summarizes that part of the work pertaining to the undercut block-caving method of mining. Ore is mined on a large scale exclusively by the undercut block-caving method at the following six mines in the western United States: The Morenci branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci, Ariz.; the Ray mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ray, Ariz.; the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. at Inspiration, Ariz.; the Miamo Copper Co. at Miami, Ariz.; the Ruth mine of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ruth, Nev.; and the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation at Kimberly, Nev. The undercut block-caving method is also used at the mine of the Andes Copper Mining Co. at Potrerillos, Chile.

Automatic control of drum head continuous mining machines was investigated as a means of reducing respirable dust generated and operator variabitity. Literature survey, manufacturer interviews and mine visits were the major information sources. Technically feasible automation concepts were Identified to control sump and shear rates, cutter head elevation limits and sumping distance. These are the elements of a programmed cutting cycle which maintains peak penetrating force on the cutter, to maximize depth of cut and therefore reduce dust generation. Based on the industry surveys, successful underground hardware demonstrations must be completed in order to stimulate the market demand for these advanced control features.

With a return to coal as a major energy source for many companies, more emphasis is being placed on recovery of coal from areas that were formally considered uneconomical to mine. Increasing emphasis is being placed on production from low coal (seam height 48 inches or less) as high coal seams are depleated. Mining in restrictive spaces requires unusual work postures that can turn easy jobs into demanding ones. The objectives of this research were: (1) to evaluate the job demands associated with low coal mining, (2) to survey the anthropometry, strength, and aerobic capacity of low coal miners to determine if they differ from the U. S. population, and (3) to recommend, on the basis of available information, optimal job and work station design for low coal mining. This research effort was supported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The male and female anthropometry with the exception of weight and circumferential dimension, was quite similar to the comparison population. Back strength for male and female miners was significantly lower than the industrial worker population. This can be one of the contributing factors of low back problems in mining. Shoveling, timbering, and helpers tasks were physiologically demanding activities. However, due to the frequent stoppage of work, adequate rest was usually available. If work stoppage is corrected, then better work/rest schedules are essential.

This report reviews the work performed on Task M of Bu-Mines Contract H0220073 to develop an engineering model of a surface and subsurface communications system for normal mine operations and for post disaster rescue operations. The system concept provides for one-way transmission of digital information between a number of identifiable subsurface terminals or subcenters and a single surface station. It also provides 2-way voice communications between the subcenters and the surface station. The basic communications link is electromagnetic signaling through-the-earth, but the system is also capable of using mine phone lines as an alternate link. Engineering models of three subcenters and one surface terminal (see Figure 1-1) have been fabricated in order to demonstrate the system's performance. The system concept, however, permits up to 20 subcenters to be incorporated if desired. Additional subcenters are also feasible for large mines if they can be deployed in the mine to operate on a noninterfering basis.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. As set forth in the decision of the Trail Smelter Arbitral Tribunal, dated April 16, 1938 This Tribunal is constituted under and its powers are derived from and limited by the convention between the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada signed at Ottawa, April 15, 1935, duly ratified by the two parties and ratification exchanged at Ottawa, August 3, 1935 (hereinafter termed "the Convention") . . . The duty imposed upon the Tribunal by the Convention was to "finally decide" the following questions: (1) Whether damage caused by the Trail Smelter in the State of Washington has occurred since the first day of January 1932, and, if so, what indemnity should be paid therefor? (2) In the event of the answer to the first part of the preceding Question being in the affirmative, whether the Trail Smelter should be required to refrain from causing damage in the State of Washington in the future and, if so, to what extent? (3) In the light of the answer to the preceding Question, what measures or regime, if any, should be adopted or maintained by the Trail Smelter? (4) What indemnity or compensation, if any, should be paid on account of any decision or decisions rendered by the Tribunal pursuant to the next two preceding Questions? In this decision reported to the Government of the United States of America and to the Government of the Dominion of Canada, the Tribunal answered the first question in its entirety and reserved decision on the other three questions in accordance with the following extract from their decision

Recent papers on support of roof and top rock in mines representing present practice in so far as it hits been described by engineers in all of the principal mining countries, cover a relatively aide range of topics. The papers abstracted herein include such subjects as the testing of materials of support, failure and movement of rock above workings, effect of excessive pressures on rock masses, axed the application in mines of timber, metal, concrete, packing, and filling support. It is not within the scope of this paper to present a logical and orderly discussion of the elements of support and their application to conditions influenced by the material worked or the method of mining. Only the essential facts of a paper appear in the abstracts, the idea being to give a fairly clear picture of the behavior of various types of support under brows conditions and to put into concise form important information concerning present practice, modifications of practice, and the trend toward new practice. With such valuable facts from others experience made readily available, it Is hoped that the engineer with particular and often trying problems may obtain suggestions that will be immediately helpful.

As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The studies were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell, chief engineer, Petroleum and Natural-Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, Washington; D. C., and H. C. This information circular describes open-pit mining methods and practices of the Bagdad Copper Corp., Yavapai County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A brief history of the Eureka district and of early developments at the [gdad] mine is given, and the are deposit is described with particular emphasis on those characteristics (physical, economic, or engineering) that affected the choice of mining methods. Prospecting, exploration, and sampling and estimating the tonnage and grade are outlined. Development of the open-pit mine is shown. Mining methods, including breaking ground, primary drilling and blasting, secondary drilling and blasting, loading, transportation, engineering, and operating control, are described. A brief summary of mining equipment is given. Percentage of extraction, production rate, mine drainage and water supply, wage, contract, and bonus systems, safety and fire prevention, and the processing plant also are described. The last section gives a breakdown of such costs as are available for publication.

This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

This Information Circular brings together for consideration recommendations from U.S. Bureau of Mines research in the area of surface mine mobile equipment maintenance for the period 1982 through 1991. It updates the 1982 contract report by Baker and Alves that formed the basis for much of the work described in the present report. Recommendations for hazard abatement during work on mobile one equipment are presented and stem from the results and recommendations of the research in two areas: (1) equipment and workplace hazard reduction, and (2) management of maintenance information. Recommendations included in this report apply to both the operators and maintainers of mobile mining equipment as well as to the manufacturers of that equipment.

Following the introduction of roof shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene in 1975, the number of shield faces (faces supported by shields) has increased steadily, and the occurrence of accidents associated with ground control inadequacies at longwall operations has shown a downward trend. However, ground control problems in longwall mining still exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. In this report, the Bureau of Mines addresses the problem of longwall roof control. The report presents a review of foreign remedial and strata replacement techniques for longwall faces and evaluates their potential for domestic application. The technology reviewed includes meshing, chemical rock stabilization, cribbing, strain-absorbent modules, inflatables, synthetic foam, and monolithic fills.

In attempting to discuss a subject of this character it should be clearly understood at the outset that the purpose is not to emphasize the mere fact of occurrence of such catastrophes, the memory of which time has largely relegated to oblivion, but rather to stress the means of their prevention, available not only subsequent to but also at the time of occurrence. A careful, conscientious, unbiased study of the causes of mine explosions leads inevitably and definitely to the conclusion that the human element is the most important factor. The human factor should however, be evaluated in terms of responsibility--responsibility on the part of the employer to recognize the existing hazards and take the necessary remedial action, and on the part of the employee to perform his duties faithfully, diligently, scrupulously, and in strict conformity with State mining laws and company rules or other regulations.

The outstanding trend in the graphite market is the fast-growing demand for cheaper qualities of graphite and the declining consumption of the more expensive varieties. The manufacture of graphite, crucibles for melting metals was one of the earliest applications of the-mineral and for many years constituted by far the leading source of demand. In later, years, however; and more especially since the Great War, the increasing demand for high-grade steel ingots and castings instead of enlarging crucible sales has permanently curtailed the domestic demand for crucibles because it has hastened the introduction of electric, oil or gas fired furnaces to replace the older types requiring pots to hold the metal during melting. While there has been a substantial increase in the use of graphite for miscellaneous refractories the total consumption for such purposes is too small to offset the shrinkage in demand for crucible making, and though it consumes the better and hence more expensive grades of crystalline flake graphite, it does not call so insistently for the still costlier Ceylon grades.

"INTRODUCTION The need for an accurate and precise analytical method for determining moisture in coals of high water content has been recognized by the coal industry as well as the fuel technologist. Interest in this particular phase of coal technology extends back to the early work of German investigators on the brown coals of Central Europe. Studies by these workers led to the establishment of a direct immiscible liquid-distillation method 4/ as the accepted moisture determining technique in European laboratories. Direct moisture determining methods, those methods that utilize various techniques to drive off the water from a given sample of coal and either collect the water in a calibrated receiver or selectively trap the water driven off in a suitable absorber, have found little favor in the United States. They have been treated merely as research tools.5/ The problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals of the United States has not been given much consideration because such coals contribute only about 2 percent of the total United States production. With renewed activity in low-temperature carbonization and with the growth of interest in coal and coal-tar hydrogenation, the American coals of lover rank containing 20 to 40 percent bed moisture will be subjected to extensive investigation. If the low-rank coals of the United States are to be accurately appraised, the need for qualitative and quantitative analytical proceeded becomes more pronounced. These coals, especially the lignites of Texas and North Dakota, are highly susceptible to oxidation, a process that proceeds to a greater or less extort when low-rank, high-moisture coals are treated by oven-drying methods. The extent of this atmospheric oxidation has been described and evaluated by numerous workers. 7/In many respects, the problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals, those found in the United States and the high-moisture coals of Central Europe, is similar. Conversely, the problem of moisture determination assumes a different aspect when the coals of the eastern and the middle-west sections of the United States are considered. Present methods, the loss in weight gravimetic-type procedures, serve adequately to test these low-moisture coals. The determination of moisture in coals containing 20 to 40 percent water should be approached from a direct method rather than from an indirect gravimetic-type procedure because of the oxidative tendencies of these coals and the demonstratrated inability of a loss-in-weight technique to remove all the water in a given sample of coal."
