The directory includes a sampling of computer usage in operating and manufacturing companies, consulting firms, computer companies, research organizations, universities, and various governmental agencies. References to computer applications throughout the industry are presented as well as comments on program availability. The work effort on the updated directory concentrated on programs that are available to the public and are well documented.

The Bureau of Mines is responsible for a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse and changing mineral resource needs of the Nation. These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer, Chief Scientist, and Chief Mining Engineer, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaisons with other government agencies, mineral industries, and professional societies. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions: (1) Developing new and improved technology that will make the production and processing of minerals more efficient, safer and more healthful for mineral workers and the public, and more compatible with a quality environment.

A study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide information which will lead to an increase in the recycling of mineral materials, in order to help conserve the Nation's mineral resources. Data were collected on energy requirements to recycle prompt industrial and obsolete scrap for nine metal commodities: Iron and steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, lead, stainless steel, titanium, tin, and nickel and nickel alloys. Major process routes for recycling were considered, starting from the first collection point through scrap preparation, transportation, smelting and/or refining to the molten metal, ingot, or other semi- finished form approximately equivalent to a primary metal of a similar composition. Available data for 1976 were collected on the amounts of each metal commodity recycled by major scrap categories. In addition, energy requirements were estimated for separating municipal solid wastes into four major categories: Refuse-derived fuel, and magnetic, aluminum, and glass cullet fractions. Finally, areas of research were identified to enhance recycling and/or increase the efficiency of energy use.

An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

The survey work on protective canopy design was conducted in a 2-month period commencing November 15, 1973. The reported re¬sults under this contract are intended to provide guidance to coal mine operators in complying with federal regulations pertaining to incorporation of protective canopies on underground coal mine electric face equipment. All coal mine electric face equipment manufacturers and 11 coal mines were visited in the course of conducting this survey. Canopy designs currently being manufactured and those now being used underground were examined and discussed with manufacturers, mine operators, machine operators, and safety committeemen. The general objective was to find out what kind of canopies are now being made and used underground, what the operational problems are, and what can be done to secure improvements. Specifically, the survey scope was as follows: a. Survey all electric face equipment manufacturers. b. Survey 10 coal mines (seam height 60 inches and greater). c. Identify current production canopy configurations and minimum mine entry dimensions for each model and type of electric face equipment. d. Assess in-mine operation of canopies developed by manufacturers and/or coal companies. e. Specify optimal canopy configuration and minimum mine entry dimensions for each type and model of electric face equipment.

Ibis report summarizes the results of the contract. Included are summaries of existing legislation pertaining to outcrop barriers and a state-of-the-art survey of outcrop barrier designs and related, mine closure techniques. Six sites were inspected in the field and are presented as case histories The data analysis presented includes a computer modeled seepage analysis, an overburden blew-out analysis, and a wedge stability analysis. The results tit these analyses are interpreted to form recommendations for coal outcrop barriers which will minimize seepage and the potential for failure. Supplementary support and reinforcement alternatives are also discussed.

The Federal Bureau of mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted exploratory investigations and geologic mapping in the Wishbone Hill district of the Matanuska coalfield almost continuously from 1942 through 1958. These investigations delineated reserves of high-volatile bituminous coal necessary to supply the rapidly expanding military and civilian requirements in the Anchorage area. This report describes the program conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1949 through 1958, and briefly summarizes previous investigations, the results of which have already been published. The coal-bearing structure on both the north and south limbs of the prominent Wishbone Hill syncline was explored by 8,719 feet of churn drilling and 25,460 feet of diamond-core drilling. A total of 33 holes were drilled ranging in depth from 60 to 2,114 feet. To supplement the drilling operations, bulldozer and dragline trenching were undertaken at key locations; about 25,000 cubic yards of dragline trench were excavated in the vicinity of the old Premier mine.

Extensive thick lignite apparently lies within 250 feet of the land surface in Dyer, Lake, Lauderdale, Obion and Tipton counties. Information on geology, land use, soils, groundwater and instability is compiled, along with a bibliography. A test and monitoring site was investigated at Fort Pillow Prison in Lauderdale County. Analyses were made of lignite, overburden, associated water and leachate. Lignite has high BTU (about 7800) and low sulfur (1.1% avg.). A year or more of data are presented on rainfall, water levels, and chemistry of surface water, groundwater, leachate and water from test pits. Main potential environmental problems are quality of surface water, and possibly shallow groundwater. The main aquifer of the region will likely be un-affected by mining. Low transmissibility of shallow aquifers will minimize lowering water levels of wells. Soil reclamation and conservation should be readily accomplished, Dangerous earthquakes have a low probability and mines are not significantly more hazardous than steep bluffs.

This circular is part II of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of employees. It deals with the physiological aspects of the principal physical qualities of mine air; part I (Information Circular 7001), chapters 1 to 3, discussed the physiological aspects of the chemical qualities of mine air, especially when contaminated with organic matter and noxious and toxic gases; part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air-conditioning mines to try to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts of tae world. With the present emphasis on the necessity for preserving the health of the Nation's defenders, industrial as well as military, attention should be called to the various conditions that may affect adversely their health and efficiency. One of the most important of these is exposure to abnormal air conditions, especially high temperatures and humidities. Therefore, it is believed that although the data presented here on the physiological effects of exposure to high temperatures cue intended mainly for the mining and allied industries, they are applicable to many other defense industries as well as to conditions present in some activities of the Army and Navy.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. A dense-medium cyclone pilot plant was built to clean 112-inch to 0 size coal. This pilot plant does not require the removal of the extremely fine material (usually minus 1/2-mm) from the feed, which is necessary in conventional dense-medium cyclone plants. The essential difference between conventional cyclone plants and the pilot plant is in the medium-recovery system. The latter uses a combination of sieve bend screens, classifying cones, and magnetic separators for medium recovery. Eight tests were run in the pilot plant at a feed rate of 5 tons per hour with four different raw coals and one crushed jig middling product. Sharp separations were obtained as indicated by an average error area of 27 and probable error of 0.047 for the 112-inch to 200-mesh size range. Magnetite loss averaged about 2.5 pounds per ton of feed. The influence of several factors on cleaning performance of the cyclone was investigated. The diameters of both the overflow and underflow orifices were found to be important for optimum cleaning performance, but these diameters could vary over a wide range without serious effect; however, if this range was exceeded, cleaning performance deteriorated. Better cleaning performance was obtained when the cyclone inlet pressure was increased from 9 psig to 13 psig. The size of the magnetite particles in the medium was found to have a substantial effect, and the best cleaning results were obtained with grade B magnetite. Demagnetizing the magnetite in an effort to decrease the effective particle size did not improve cyclone performance.

This report is one of a series describing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the performance of various types of coal - cleaning equipment ; other reports in the series are listed in the bibliography . The information in these reports is useful to the coal industry and the manufacturers of coal - cleaning equipment in several ways : First , it assists the coalpreparation engineer who is planning a new plant to select the type of process best suited to the requirements by enabling him to forecast the yield and quality of clean coal obtainable with each type of equipment . Second , the information serves as a yardstick by which the performance of a plant can be judged and thus helps determine whether it is operating at satisfactory efficiency . Both these functions promote better coal - preparation practice ; that is , they help provide coal of more suitable quality for the market and likewise minimize the waste of good coal . This serves the interest of conservation with which the Bureau is vitally concerned . The present report deals with three plants using the Tromp dense - medium process , named after its inventor , K. F. Tromp , who developed the process in the Netherlands in 1936.5/ Selection of this particular dense -medium process for investigation was entirely a matter of convenience , and reports dealing with other dense -medium systems are planned for the future . Two baths are employed in one of the plants investigated . The first of these , handling 6- to 3 - inch coal , exhibited an exceptionally sharp separation between coal and impurity . Numerous widely distributed pegmatites of the southern Black Hills of South Dakota contain small amounts of beryl, and two minor deposits are known in the northern Black Hills. Few mines have produced more than 50 tons, and the current, rate of production for the area is about 100 tons annually. Total production, since the first records, is 2,358 tons. Most of the deposits contain less than 1 percent beryl, although the beryl zones in several deposits contain 2 percent beryl or more. Estimated reserves of beryl total 11,824 tons, and an additional 234 tons has been measured; there are other unestimated reserves. The pegmatites are in a belt about the margin of the Harney Peak batholith in the southern Black Hills, although they fail into three districts. The most important, from the point of view of production and reserves, is the Keystone district. Many deposits also are found in the vicinity of Custer and Pringle. Small amounts of beryl occur in the dikes near Hill City. A little beryl has been produced from the Tinton district in the northern Black Hills, and an undeveloped dike has been discovered on Whitewood Peak near Deadwood. The beryl-bearing pegmatites are principally coarse-grained intergrowths or massive segregations of feldspar, quartz, and mica. Some of them contain notable amounts of lithium minerals, as well as some tantalite, columbite, and cassiterite.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of the use of three unique numerical modeling methods to analyze cutter roof problems in underground coal mines. Cutter roof failures are common in coal mines where the immediate roof is comprised of thin laminae exposed to highly biaxial tectonic stress fields. The predominant mechanism for failure is assumed to be excessive shear stress at the entry corners exceeding the shear strength of the rock. Early work in this area utilized the finite-element method and then the boundary-element method to analyze several cutter roof control measures. Various stress control measures were simulated to estimate their respective effects on reducing the high levels of shear stress at the entry corners. More recent studies made use of the discrete-element method. This method was used to take the analyses beyond the elastic continuum limits to simulate the propagation of a shear fracture and subsequent redistribution of stress within the mine roof. A simple roof bolt model was implemented to show the benefits of bolting to increase the resistance to shearing and separation along horizontal bedding planes and maintain roof stability.

Among the numerous Low-grade manganese deposits in eastern Aroostook County, Maine, the Dudley deposit near Mapleton in the northern district is one of the few known to contain an appreciable tonnage averaging above 10 percent manganese. The ore body, consisting of stratified manganiferous hematitic shale, is over 5,000 feet long and ranges in width from 30 to 175 feet. The deposit was extensively explored during 1942-44 by the Manganese Ore Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Data obtained from this work were made available to the State and Federal Geological Surveys for estimating ore reserves. An estimate by the Maine Geological Survey, using a 10-percent manganese cutoff and to a depth of 200 feet, shows 609,000 long tons of manganese metal in material averaging 12.6 percent manganese. By lowering the cutoff limit to 5 percent manganese, the estimate was increased to 919,000 long tons of metallic manga¬nese in material averaging, 10.4 percent manganese,

In situ stope leaching is an innovative mining system that reduces the surface impacts of conventional underground mining. As in any leaching operation, stope leaching requires hydrologic site characterization and control of leaching solutions. Several tracer tests, using sodium chloride (NaCl) in various concentrations, were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in an underground experimental stope to simulate a leaching environment. The tests were conducted in fractured crystalline rock that was partially water-saturated. As tests progressed, the surrounding fractures became more saturated. A predominant flow direction away from the stope was found during testing. Testing procedures, results, and a remediation plan for in situ leaching based on field observations are presented in this report.

The distribution of stress adjacent to each of 25 mine openings was determined by the borehole stress-relief method in the FMC Corp. Westvaco trona mine at Westvaco, Wyo. The purpose of the stress determinations was twofold: First, to study the effect on these distributions of various factors such as opening shape, stress level, and loading history; and second, to estimate the distribution of stresses adjacent to extensive high-extraction (85 to 100 percent) areas. Stress distributions in areas of low average stress correspond closely to the theoretical distributions based on elastic theory. However, in areas of high average stress, the stress distributions are of a type associated with plastic failure. The stresses adjacent to a mined-out area supported by remnant pillars were significantly higher than the stresses adjacent to another area in which the remnant pillars were removed.

1. The investigation shows that nine coal beds have been mined in Harlan County, of which the Harlan and Upper Elkhorn No, 3 are the most important from the standpoint of present production. Of less importance are the Hindman, Flag, Haddix, Wax, Fire Clay, Armburgy, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2. The Harlan, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2 beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,138 million short tons as of January I, 1932. Of this total, 1,956 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study, Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

In 1985, U.S. Bureau of Mines and University of Kentucky researchers began a series of studies relating to self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) donning proficiency. During the next 5 years investigators examined a number of factors that have a bearing upon miners' ability to put on and use the apparatus in an emergency: the procedure being taught; availability and utilization of training models; opportunities to practice; hygiene; and on-the-job training. This report presents an overview of that research. It is concluded that companies should adopt a hands-on training protocol that allows them to integrate SCSR donning practice into other workplace routines such as fire drills.
