Since its discovery in February 2014, the Arrow Uranium Deposit has undergone rapid development through aggressive and systematic drilling programs and is now being progressed through advanced engineering and permitting. Based on the 2018 NI 43-101 Technical Report, the Probable Mineral Reserve estimate totals 234.1 million (“M”) pounds (“lbs”) triuranium octoxide (“U3O8”), contained in 3.43 M tonnes at an average grade of 3.09% U3O8. The proposed processing plant at the Rook I Project (the “Project”) will be capable of producing up to 31 M lbs of U3O8 per year, with a projected mine life of nine years based on the Probable Mineral Reserve estimate, although NexGen is permitting a 24-year operating life at the Project assuming the majority of Inferred Mineral Resources are upgraded to Indicated Mineral Resources with continued mineral resource development drilling. The Project will be developed through transverse and longitudinal longhole mining methods, pairing primary and secondary stoping techniques with a high degree of equipment mechanization which will provide a combination of good productivity, high extraction, and stable back support. This next generation of uranium operations combines the use of advanced tele-remote equipment and instrumentation with a low-cost bulk mining method and a best-in-class tailings management practice, effectively reducing operating costs and setting a new standard for elite environmental and social practices.

"It is important to ensure that the basic mine hoist plant design fundamentals are incorporated into any new mine hoist plant project before detailed design engineering is commenced. Some of the basic design fundamentals to be considered are: hoist rope fleet and flight angles for good hoist rope coiling, hoist rope harmonic frequency study to ensure that the hoist rope does not run at full speed at a rope resonance frequency, head frame and shaft clearance diagrams to establish the optimum positions for the loading and dumping of the shaft conveyances, access in the head frame and shaft collar for hoist rope and shaft conveyance installation and removal. Failure to consider the hoist plant fundamentals before detailed engineering commences will result in extra costs for hoist plant redesign or a significant increase in operating and maintenance costs for the mine due to increased hoist plant downtime to perform tasks and a lower mine operating efficiency. INTRODUCTION The mine hoisting plant is the most critical single line component in the operation of a shaft sinking operation or a permanent installation. Bad decisions in the design and selection of the hoist plant equipment can significantly add to the operating costs and up-time in the operation of the mine. Mine hoisting plant equipment installed costs represent approximately 5 to 8 percent of the capital cost of a new mine, yet price sometimes becomes the deciding factor for procuring the hoist plant components, sometimes selecting used equipment that may compromise the design and maintainability of the mine hoist plant. Mine downtime can cost upwards of $100,000 per hour and it will not take a very long time to eat up all the so-called savings on hoist plant equipment purchases. This paper will provide guidelines for the design, selection, installation and maintenance of mine hoist plant equipment with the objective to having the right mine hoist plant with the highest operational availability and best maintainability. PRELIMINARY DESIGN INFORMATION Before any engineering commences, the following information needs to be obtained to allow the preliminary sizing of the hoist plant equipment: • Shaft depth: The shaft depth will influence the hoist rope selection based on the material and personnel loads anticipated for the mine design. The shaft depth will also influence the maximum speed of the shaft conveyances. • Annual production: The desired annual production will influence the required payload sizing with allowances for maintenance and inspections of the hoist plant equipment."

The extractive industry has the potential to impact the health and well-being of workers, families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of social performance, project planning considers that activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way across the development cycle (i.e. from exploration ? post-closure). In this context, health impacts of mining can be mapped and extend over the Life of the Community and can encompass worker injury and disease, exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health outcomes specific to family and community health and well-being outside the fence. To contribute to an emerging field focused on Health and the Extractive Industry, this paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining, oil and gas companies with operations in Australia and Canada. The objective of this review is to map corporate approaches to public health management across our previously developed Life-of-Mine within Life-of-Community (LOMLOC) framework in order to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments across the project cycle, as well as identify the level of prevention targeted by this investment activity (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of detrimental health impact). With the extractive industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, this paper provides preliminary comparative information about corporate health spending by some companies in Australia and Canada. This information serves as a resource for minerals industry managers, civil society and regulators regarding current health management approaches in this sector.

"This study was conducted to establish the possible application of bioleaching in the pilot scale to recover valuable metals from the sulfidic tailings of Golgohar Iron Mine (Kerman, Iran). Using bioleaching processes, solvent extraction and sulfide precipitation recovery of valuable metals including, copper, cobalt and nickel from the tailing was investigated. The results showed that the optimum pH and temperature conditions relative to the bioleaching step was 1.5 and 45°C. The extraction of the metals from the low grade polymetal resource with complex mineralogy is very important from economic, environmental and technical point of views. Moreover, the proposed method has some advantages from energy saving, tailing management and creating added value from waste materials aspects.INTRODUCTION The growing demand for base metals and strategic such as: copper, nickel and cobalt as well as high-grade resource depletion has caused them, the mining industry to extract metals from low-grade resources and driven by complex mineralogy (Xie et al., 2005). Economic extraction of metals with low grade sources requires low-cost and efficient processing methods. A source with enormous potential for metals in future, secondary sources, such as: tailings mineral industries which the lack of appropriate technology and the high cost of processing weren't recoverable with previous procedures in the past. But it is possible that with develop new and efficient technologies have the economic exploitation ability. Recovery of metals from tailings resources is very important not only in terms of precious metals but also in terms of reducing environmental problems (due to heavy metals). The metals of copper, nickel and cobalt are mainly like sulfide compounds in the nature, usually for their recovery, first they make ore with flotation method to obtain the sulfide concentrate that containing valuable metals. then for the metal production, it will be melt and purification. Due to the environmental aspects, technical problems in the recovery of base metals from low grade ore and mixes, the presence of small reserves, in the past three decades they pay much attention to the use of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of base metals from these resources. These processes are classified according to the solver agent to leaching sulfates, chlorides, nitrates and amines (Hackl, 1995). Early, chloride leaching under oxidation condition in acidic or alkaline solutions was recognized the best process to produce sulfide concentrates. But then the basic processes sulfates was considered as the superior process because of being easier, a better understanding of the chemistry of leaching and recovery of base metals, especially copper from the environment easier sulfate solution with an organic solvent extraction and electro winning. The bioleaching is shown its ability on a commercial scale of low-grade sulfide minerals and ore that because of environmental reasons, the possibility of melting is not possible to them. The existing industrial base factories are based on primarily on the bioleaching and pressure leaching and recovery of cathode copper sulfate solution by extraction with organic solvents (SX) and electrowinning (EW) (Wang, 2005). Preliminary analysis has shown that valuable elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt are in the float flotation unit. Hence the plan to extract these metals from the wet tailing stream has been done."

History The birth of the mining industry of Canada took place about 1670. According to Salone (Salone E., La Colonisation de la Nouvelle France, page 205) the first discovery of ore in the country was made by an iron-master, Monsieur de la Potardiere, near Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Under French rule some prospecting was done; but at this time no one seemed to consider the working of mines practicable. It was not until the time that Begon became Intendant, when the Marquis of Vaudreuil was Governor, that mining was attempted. Begon was a patron of industrial arts and did his best to promote home manufactures. The mining industry was developed under his regime and discoveries of copper and lead ores were made in 1730. About this time the St. Maurice Forges were erected to treat bog-iron ore, and they were in operation for many years. Prior to 1747, iron pans to the value of £21,000 were manufactured, together with bar-iron and plough-shares. About 1769, that is, ten years after the conquest by Wolfe, stoves and other articles, and, later, potash kettles, appeared. What is still more interesting to us-or was, at least, to General Wolfe-is that cannon balls made at the St. Maurice Forges delayed his operations. A map dated 1744, a copy of which appears in the report of the Ontario Bureau of Mines for 1913 (Vol. XIX), indicates the extensiveness of the wanderings of the French and also shows the location of the lead mine on the east shore of Lake Timiskaming. Bog-iron ore was turned into metal, with charcoal for fuel, at Norman-dale, Norfolk county, Ontario, in 1813, and at Clementsport, Nova Scotia, in 1825. In a volume published in 1672, reference is made to the occurrence of coal on the Atlantic seaboard, and in 1677 Monsieur Duchesneau, the Intendant, levied a royalty of twenty sous per ton on all coal taken from Cape Breton.

Research is a much over-overworked word, sometimes a much abused word; the result of this has been that many who really need the word avoid it, shy away from it just as we do from that most useful word camouflage. We have not been altogether happy in our substitutes. Some years ago I spoilt a very good proposition by using the word investigation. There were those who thought that men and methods were to be investigated instead of simply processes. They expected disruption instead of co-ordination. The bad psychology up-set the scheme. The word experiment is even worse in its psychology. To the mind of the "practical" business man experiment denotes ignorance, waste of time and money and presupposes failure. It is not so long ago that the recognized way of improving the methods about a mine was to get a new manager. Until comparatively recently the average life of a boss in a mine in the West was under, rather than over, two years. Certainly was this the case in the smaller mines. Directors did not recognize that a cock-sure new boss was a greater experiment than a certain amount of feeling-his-way on the part of the old one. We always say that no two mines are the same but we are only now realizing to what extent the fine points of the game can and must be learnt on the job itself. One of the main differences between a small property and a large one lies in this study of the fine points of the game. In the early stages operation is the main point-get her going and keep her going.

"The mining industry instinctively follows rule-of-thumb design velocities often based on very simplistic theoretical “economic velocity” optimization calculations to determine airway sizes. Although these are important building blocks in ventilation planning it should be recognized that mines are far more complex and various, often opposing factors, are at play. Therefore, it is important that each ventilation situation be analyzed on a case-by-case basis to determine the best-fit solution for an operation. The ventilation design process should not necessarily be constrained by theoretical optimal economic velocities that become rules-of-thumb. In some cases, this could lead to unrealistic infrastructure requirements and exorbitant capital expenditure. This type of design often lacks corporate support leading to a scenario where no ventilation upgrades are implemented. Economic velocities typically consider the cost of power, development costs and operational risk. These typical rules-of-thumb work reasonably well as a starting off point when considering feasibility of greenfield projects. For established mines that are looking at expansion these rules may not be appropriate due to capital expenditure constraints or geotechnical ground conditions. The theoretical optimum should be reviewed in the case of an established mine where existing infrastructure could perhaps be maximized. For example, the geotechnical risk of large diameter raises at depth may require multiple small diameter raise to maintain the theoretical economic velocity. If a mine has a life of less than 5 years, then the cost of power is an insignificant proportion of the total owning cost. For these mines, operating the ventilation raises at an increased velocity to avoid a complicated and expensive capital upgrade might be the more appropriate option, even though it opposes the traditional rules-of-thumb. Mines which are capital constrained may be better off accepting a higher operating cost for the interim or settle for minor infrastructure upgrades rather than run the risk of the entire ventilation upgrade not being approved at all. This paper explores a number of examples derived from case studies undertaken by the authors for several deep mechanized mining projects in Australasia. The examples explore conditions under which higher than the economic norm would be applicable."

The New Level Mine project (NLMP), the planned underground expansion of the El Teniente mine in Rancagua, Chile, is expected to reach a daily extraction rate of 137 to 180 ktpd upon achieving full capacity. Production is planned to start in the year 2017 and the current plan is to meet that target through two development phases, from the year 2012 to 2014 and from the year 2015 to 2017. To achieve the 2012 to 2014 underground development schedule, the ventilation requirements have been estimated in the range of 189 m3/s (400 kcfm), and cannot be made available without significant modifications to the current system of El Teniente. As a result, a certain number of alternatives were explored to find a solution to this shortfall, for example, adding raises to generate parallel airways and installing fans to reinforce the current ventilation system. From the alternatives studied, the installation of a second main fan (system) in parallel to an existing one was identified as the best solution, and selected for implementation, however the location was not ideal and there were concerns as to the operation of both fans once the second fan was installed. This paper presents the study used to estimate the operational points of both the current and the new fan, and to justify the parallel installation of the additional main fan. An additional computational fluid dynamics study was undertaken to validate the operational point, given the particular geometry of the fan?s location and placement, to guarantee a stable operation of the fans. Finally, the protocols arising out of this work for starting the fans, and operating them in parallel to avoid generating a stall condition and damaging the investment are discussed.

"This paper reviews design trends related to the various SAG mill configuration and drive options available today. The impact of these options on capital and operating costs is assessed, and key technical issues reviewed. The discussion is based on the conventional North American ’pancake’ mill configuration. IntroductionDuring the past decade mill technology has evolved significantly in the following key areas:• improvements in variable speed motors continue with on-going advances in electronics;• ring motors, or gearless drives, are becoming more common in mill sizes 32 ft and larger, with ratings of 10 000 HP and greater;• geared drives have become available up to ratings of 9500 HP per pinion, compared to the earlier 6000 HP guideline;• improvements in speed reducer technology due to the use of carburized and ground precision gearing, make the high speed motor-speed reducer drive more competitive with the direct coupled low speed motor drive;• a unique speed reducer drive is being introduced to this industry which combines ring gear drive pinions with speed reduction. mprovement in gear alignment is claimed, and the overall drive arrangement is more compact than is possible with a conventional speed reducer drive;• the first 38 ft and 40 ft diameter mills have been designed and manufactured; and • application of large multi-shoe bearings have made shell supported mill configurations available for all, including the largest sizes. These designs have flat instead of conical mill shell ends, and have the potential for technical and cost advantages compared to conventional trunnion supported designs.This proliferation of mill design features provides several options to those involved in planning and design of milling plants, and requires more extensive evaluation to optimize mill design features to best suit specific project requirements."

"Nickel recovery from laterite ores generates large amounts of solid and liquid wastes. This is primarily due to the low concentration of Ni (about 1.4 wt%) in the feed ore to the High-Pressure-Acid-Leaching (HPAL) process. It is known that the HPAL residue contains a high concentration of hematite, a commercially important source of iron in the steelmaking industry. However, the balance is natroalunite, containing sulfur, which is a detrimental element in the steelmaking process. Hence, to make the HPAL residue a suitable feed for steelmaking, natroalunite must be removed. The current work is focused on: 1) a thorough characterization of the HPAL residue obtained from Vale, and 2) a systematic investigation of an alkaline leach process to remove natroalunite. The characterization results indicated that there are about 83 and 12 wt% hematite and natroalunite in the HPAL residue, respectively. The leaching results indicate that sodium hydroxide is the best leaching agent, which results in 55 wt% reduction in the sulfur content. The results of this work enable the conversion of an otherwise waste product into a useful feedstock for steelmaking. Furthermore, this project could potentially have significant environmental benefits by reducing the amount of residue produced during the HPAL process.INTRODUCTION Conventionally, crude steel has been obtained by reducing iron ore containing oxides such as hematite (Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), and wüstite (FeO) in a blast furnace with coke. The product is then refined in a basic oxygen furnace to produce steel with useful properties (McGannon, 1969; Turkdogan, 1978). Steel has been sought for its desirable properties and its application is widespread throughout modern civilizations. Surpassing the growth rate of other materials, the annual demand of steel has increased at a compound growth rate of 5% over the last 20 years (Baddoo, 2008). The global demand for steel was reported to be 1501 Mt in 2016 and demand is expected to double by 2050 (Cullen, Allwood, & Bambach, 2012; World Steel Association, 2016). In recent years, to meet the rapid growth of demand, secondary resources for iron have been identified as strategic sources of iron (Das, Kumar, & Ramachandrarao, 2000; Li, Sun, Bai, & Li, 2010; Matschullat et al., 2000). The residue produced from high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of laterite ore has been identified as one of the important secondary sources of iron (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore represents 60% of the world’s nickel resources and accounts for approximately 40-50% of the world annual nickel production (U.S. Geological Survey, 2016). Therefore, the amount of iron residue produced by the process is substantial and its utilization will produce both economic and environmental benefits."

The paper addresses five questions concerning the economic of gold exploration in the western Canadian shield. Can historical footprints be used to project future gold prices for exploration planning? Experience suggests that gold price forecast are too clo ely tied to current market events to provide meaningful guidelines. What range of breakeven gold price will typically be required to ju tify gold exploration in Canada? Minimum price requirements. initially asses ed at $540 to $1080 per ounce, probably lie in the range of $480 to $760 per ounce (expressed in 1985 Canadian dollar). Within Canada, what role do regional conditions and taxation policies play in determining the viability of prospective gold exploration targets? Striking interprovincial differences are found to exist, given the same geological circum tance -Nova Scotia, ew Brunswick, and Quebec rank towards the top in term of motivating exploration, Briti h Columbia provides the least investment incentive, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba place around the middle of the Canadian league. How can minimum acceptable tonnage-grade conditions for gold targets in the western shield be established and, then, constructively applied to provide exploration planning guidelines? Minimum target conditions, realis tically defined in terms of a broad band of doubt, can be used judiciously to help balance the direct costs of uneconomic exploration with the opportunity costs associated with rejecting economic deposits. How does the average cost per ounce of gold discovered in the western shield compare with the overall Canadian experience? Average discovery costs for the we tern shield, apprai ed at $100 per ounce, are shown to compare favourably with the Canada-wide record.

Then, too, the geologists are the story-tellers of our tribe - I am only a hard rock miner.Members of the Cobalt Branch and Cobalters everywhere will agree without question that this Cobalt camp has been the greatest of all influences on Canadian mining. To those who do not know Cobalt, our opinion may seem prejudiced and our statement exaggerated.Be that as it may, discussion on this subject can be profitable, since it is worthwhile now and then to think on 'whence we came' and 'where we are going'.In the revival of interest in the Cobalt camp, we hope our guests may feel some of the old Cobalt Spirit, which has become the Spirit of the North.Visitors may even, while here, catch a glimpse of that whimsical little guardian spirit of the camp - the original goblin, the Kobold - for which Cobalt was named.While Kobold brings that good luck which plays so important a part in mining, he can have his evil moments, as in his original German home. There, when he made the silver disappear from their good ore, they cursed the grey ore, calling it Kobold.Although this little goblin bas frequently upset our best mining plans and geological calculations, be has played the game as well. He placed •some silver on the surface, and when he hid ~t at depth he left dues .for its finding. Marine tailings disposal may in some cases be the best solution to one of mining’s major environmental problems. The public standing of this solution is poor, partly because of past bad practices. Among the tailings problems spreading of super-fines and toxic substances stand out. The two are often interrelated as heavy metals, insoluble to sea water, tend to adsorb on fines and spread piggyback on them. Only one paper seen, has addressed the mineralogy of fine particles in suspension. The topic was a secondary tailings deposit. Studies on the sedimentation of fines in large river estuaries show that different minerals sediment sequentially as the salinity of the river increase. Mineralogy in the particle size range where particle separation takes place, has so far, naturally been in focus for the mineral processors. Next to nothing is known about the fines which may cause environmental problems. Tailings disposal has, due to its complexity, to a large extent been taken over by specialists in other fields, biologists, engineering geologists, chemists. The basics of the subject ought also to be given more input by the mineral processing community. A drawn out battle about tailings discharge into some fjords has taken place in Norway. The detractors focus at fine particles (could be dangerous nanoparticles) spreading and emphasize the effects. Calculation is simple: 5 million tonnes tailings annually discharged, containing 1 wt. % < 1µm determined by laser diffraction, results in 50 000 tonnes of nanoparticles let loose in the environment. The industry`s difficulty to answer, is lack of basic research on this topic. Test work to develop a methodology to address the problem is described. One thing the mineral processors know is that final tailings may be comprised of tailings from separate separation processes, with different properties, some of which may require special treatment. "The Keystone porphyry molybdenum deposit, located in southcentral British Columbia, is hosted by intrusive rocks of the Cretaceous Mount Lytton batholith and the early Tertiary Keystone quartz diorite stock. The molybdenite mineralization is associated with rhyolite porphyry dikes flanking a large 1300 m by 2100 m breccia complex. Recognition of the potential for the buried molybdenum porphyry system was based on quartz-molybdenite vein fragments within the hydrothermal breccias.The full extent of the molybdenum mineralization is not known. The few deep drill holes along one comer of the breccia complex defines strong metal zoning of molybdenum and associated elements of F, Mn, Zn, Pb, Au, Ag, Fe and W about the molybdenum stockwork mineralization that may be useful for guiding additional exploration. The best mineralization occurred near the base of the deepest drill hole with 0.114% Mo in rhyolite porphyry near the edge of the breccia pipe at a depth of 1350 m.The exploration history of the deposit has been complex, focussing on both porphyry-style mineralization and precious metal veins and stockworks on the periphery of the porphyry system. Exploration to date has defined an attractive porphyry molybdenum system with uneconomic grades at great depth; however, there remains significant potential to define economic mineralization elsewhere in the Keystone porphyry system and adjoining occu""ences."

"Many tens of thousands of hectares of forested land will be disturbed and reclaimed in the surface mineable Athabasca oil sands area during the next few decades. The surface area disturbed by Syncrude’s Mildred Lake development alone exceeds 10 000 ha to date. It is not clear that reforestation of disturbed areas will best accommodate the aspirations of all stakeholders, particularly traditional users of the land. A five-year research program by Syncrude Canada Limited and the Fort McKay First Nations has examined the feasibility of raising bison on land reclaimed after disturbance by oil sands development. Forage productivity and carrying capacity for bison was comparable to that of grasslands elsewhere in Alberta. Concerns regarding compaction of newly rebuilt soil by bison traffic proved unfounded. Bison demonstrated weight gains typical for ranched bison and calving rates averaged 90%, a value typical for ranched bison. The animal husbandry problems encountered were typical of those occurring on bison ranches elsewhere in Alberta. An economic analysis indicates that a 1000 ha bison ranch on reclaimed land has a net present value that compares very favourably with a similar area supporting commercial forest. Subject to approval by Alberta Environmental Protection, the current research project will be expanded as a pilot commercial ranching venture in order to explore its commercial viability as a business venture by the Fort McKay First Nations. At the same time, measures will be implemented to resolve various regulatory issues associated with commercial bison production in the oil sands area.BackgroundSyncrude Canada Ltd. T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

"This paper presents a series of case studies where spherical camera photographs were used to generate 3D shaft models using photogrammetric methods. The shaft models were, checked for accuracy by comparing them to overlapping laser scan data, provided survey data or idealized shaft models. Short lengths of model were found to more accurately reproduce the shaft surface, with a best observed accuracy of 8 mm. Longer models encountered errors with accumulated errors as exhibited by slight deviations from vertical or slightly conical model shape. At present, the models are considered acceptable for general documentation and gross change detection. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections are required by mining regulations in many jurisdictions and are commonly completed by trained mine personnel via visual inspections. This can be time consuming and prone to errors due to lapses in attention and the rapid travel rate required to inspect an entire shaft in a reasonable amount of time. Similarly, because of the time requirements, there can be impacts on other aspects of mining as a result of occupying the shaft for inspections. Spherical cameras with supplemental light systems offer a modern addition or alternative to conventional inspections. These cameras can be lowered relatively quickly to collect high definition, fully illuminated videos of the shaft that can be reviewed in detail later while the shaft returns to service (Gillis et.al., 2019). The use of cameras offers a further opportunity for valuable survey data generation from the same original data stream. The video data can be processed into three-dimensional (3D) models using Structure-from-Motion (Westoby et al., 2012) based photogrammetric methods. Depending on the quality of the source video and availability of survey control (required for all photogrammetry models) these models can be very accurate. Shaft surveying can be conducted with traditional theodolite methods but such surveys are time consuming and limited in their data density. Similarly, scans can be completed using conventional terrestrial laser scanners, but this requires a significant number of distinct setups to provide sufficient overlap between scans. Work is being conducted both on the laser scanning (SLAM, Durrant-Whyte & Bailey, 2006) and photogrammetry fronts towards kinetic scanning (Benecke, 2017) systems. The major advancement which is permitting these kinetic systems is Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) which can provide localization in GPS denied environments and reduce errors associated with the open traverse format associated with shaft scanning."

The major of Swiss territory is occupied by mountains. Natural events as floods, debris flows, landslides, rockfalls, and avalanches regularly threaten the safety of people and properties. On the one hand, extreme weather events cause great damages, on the other hand, the enhancement of territory’s exploitation increases the risk. The Swiss Government makes many efforts to deal with the prevention of natural hazards, especially through measures of land management. As stated by federal law, Swiss cantons are obliged to establish hazard maps and to take the risk into account in the land management. Hazard maps are based on the hazard matrix, whose abscissa and ordinate are probability and intensity of the event on site. This project focuses on rockfalls. It consists of three main parts: the creation of a database to collect data on site, the creation of a catalog with all type of measures, and the development of a methodology for the analysis of the effectiveness of protective measures. The creation of the database allows us to collect information: about the site, about protective structures implemented on it, and about failures. With many multiple choice fields and few free text fields, it can collect data in a homogeneous way, without redundancy. The catalog has to be a tool that gives a basis to make decisions. It collects information about all types of protective measures implemented on Canton Vaud’s territory or available on the Swiss market. Free text fields allow for data storage of specifics, to give a complete view of structure’s characteristics and potentials. Methodology consists of four steps. The core of the procedure is the structure’s evaluation following a score system; it allows for calculation of reduction factors that have to be applied to intensity and probability parameters of the structure. Then it is necessary to convert the reduced structure’s intensity value into a residual site’s intensity value. Although the first step enables us to choose suitable measure for a specific site, it is not necessary to perform it. Second step allows us to evaluate structures under scenario 0, where structures are in best conditions. Third step allows us to evaluate structures under six scenarios of possible failings. Fourth step allows us to convert structure’s reduced intensity into event’s residual intensity and to establish the new point on hazard matrix. While the procedure has already been defined, details of score system and conversion have to be developed during the second phase of the project.
