"The flotation processes of the Niobec Mine have been affected by a seasonal loss of recovery and a significant increase in reagent consumption over the past few winters. This paper discusses the problem-solving methodology that was used to identify the root causes, to develop solutions and to implement changes that resolved the problem to restore the process to summer-like conditions year-round. Mainly, it was found that the process water was contaminated by phosphates ions, which adversely affected the carbonate pre-flotation, and caused detrimental effects on the subsequent niobium flotation. The phosphate ions were being generated by the process itself, but were consumed by algae in summer conditions. It was determined in laboratory studies that concentrations as low as 5 ppm were enough to affect the circuit and that the multiple additions of process water throughout the circuit was worsening the effect. Also, temperature was found to have an impact on the reagent performance. The performance of the plant was restored by implementing a natural treatment of our process water with a simple cost-free rearrangement of our circuit streams. In addition to that, our extensive geometallurgical program was used to provide ore to the plant restricting phosphate generation in the process. Also, a modification of the collector was developed and introduced in the carbonate pre-flotation that provided improved performance during the periods of low pulp temperature.INTRODUCTION Niobec is one the three major global producers of niobium presently in operation. Situated in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region of Quebec and in operation since 1976, the site produces ferroniobium (FeNb) to be used mainly in High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel, which is known to have better mechanical properties than carbon steel. The Niobec operation consists of an underground mine, a concentrator and a converter plant. The concentrator concentrates niobium-bearing minerals, mainly pyrochlore and columbite, to produce a high-content Nb2O5 concentrate which is then converted to FeNb in the converter plant by an aluminothermic reaction. The Niobec concentrator flowsheet, which has gone through many expansions and optimisation over the years, consists of grinding, desliming, flotation and leaching steps. The flotation steps are numerous, sensitive and difficult to operate due to the non-selective nature of oxide mineral collectors. Thus, the pyrochlore concentration process at Niobec still faces many challenges and is constantly going through periods of continuous improvement."

"The Turgeon Lake granite lies 5 miles north of Baie Johan Beetz, Quebec, at the eastern margin of the Grenville Province. The rocks are classed as granites, granulites, quartzites, biotite schists and gneisses, and amphibolites. The granite's uraniferous character is manifested by phosphuranylite, uraninite, and metamict .zircons associated with magnetite. Field anomalies occur in irregular pods, conformable with the tectonic foliation, in bands roughly paralleling sedimentary bedding. Associated features diagnostic of uraniferous granite are smoky quartz, brick-red feldspar, magnetite and a coarse to pegmatitic grain size. The granite is chemically and physically heterogeneous. Metasediment-granite contacts are diffuse or sharp, and usually conformable to bedding. The regional foliations within all rock types are coherent, and sedimentary structures are often preserved within both metasediments and granite. Autometasomatism probably was a strong granitization agent.A uranium reconcentration into fold-axial zones from original sediments which have been highly granitized during at least two phases of folding is suggested from the available data."

IT IS most appropriate that this first Memorial Lecture should be given in the Province of Quebec, near the site of the first metallurgical industry in Canada. At La Forge, about seven miles north of Three Rivers, iron was produced in 1783. We are told that the early settlers obtained most of their iron-ware -stoves, kettles, axes and ploughshares -from this smelter, with its foundry and forge. The Canadian copper industry also had its beginnings in Quebec when, nearly 100 years later, in the 1880's, several small copper smelters were erected in the Eastern Townships. Later, in 1899, Canada's first aluminum smelter was built at Shawinigan. From these small beginnings has grown a vast metals industry, the export value of its products being only exceeded by that of our forest products -newsprint, pulp-wood and lumber. As we are not a large country in terms of population, our domestic capacity to consume is often small in relation to our developed capacity to produce.

The Thompson smelter has three unique features which form the basis ~f its design: fluid bed roasters which treat nickel concentrate filter cake from the mill, as well as the flux, in order to achieve partial desulphurization; the use of electric furnaces for the smelting of the partially desulphurized, preheated roaster product; and the disposal of slag by water granulation and slag slurry pumping. The installation consists of three fluid bed roasters, each feeding an electric furnace. Nickel concentrate is received at the smelter via pipe line. It is thickened and filtered, and the filter cake, together with siliceous flux, is fed through rotary bin feeders and reciprocating double-gate seals into the fluid bed roasters. Air injected into the roasters through club-head tuyeres oxidizes part of the sulphur and associated iron in the concentrate. The heat of reaction dries and heats the charge. Roaster product is recovered from the gas stream in cyclones and from the roaster bed through automatic valves.

"Conveyed coal flows have been diverted on the basis of real time ash analysis since the 1980s. Many coarse particle separation methods are available through screens, jigs, heavy media separation, particle sorters, to name a few, however bulk diversion requires a representative, continuous analysis to ensure diversion decisions can be made with confidence. Sensors also need to be able to provide measurements at useful time increments so that small tonnages can be diverted for maximum selectivity. Particle separation typically requires high capital costs and there are limitations either in throughput tonnage or particle size or both. Few techniques are able to provide robust and representative analysis of conveyed flows in a useful time basis. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis provides multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials and has been proven in the minerals industry since 2003. This paper outlines the success of this technology in minerals applications in iron ore, phosphate rock and most recently in copper-gold ores, including its use in bulk diversion.INTRODUCTION Naturally occurring quality variability, or heterogeneity, in mineral deposits enables separation and recovery of the valuable components through mining and processing operations. There are distinct advantages in processing the minimum quantity of material to achieve the highest possible yield. Unfortunately, declining ore grades has resulted in larger scale operations and a subsequent loss in selectivity for mining operations. As limits are approached on the practical size of equipment, there is more motivation to investigate alternative solutions. Mining companies are subject to increasing social resistance to growing waste disposal requirements in addition to higher energy and transport costs. Major savings are available by reducing the quantities of material processed where pre-concentration can be effectively applied at early stages in the process. One of the simplest ways to pre-concentrate is to measure the bulk material and reject waste soon after mining so that minimal expense is incurred and that only higher quality material is sent to processing operations. This bulk sorting can occur within the mining operations and has major benefits through energy and other consumables savings. This paper discusses the application of real time analysis technologies suitable for bulk sorting within the minerals industry. Technology that has proven representative for conveyed material bulk analysis and its successful applications to date is explained. Analysis using a sensing technique is only one component of a successful bulk sorting process; the importance of effective diversion systems and a bulk sorting strategy are also discussed. The bulk sorting stage may be one component of a system that could include additional downstream technologies such as particle based sorting systems on a diverted stream."

"The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.1 km long water-diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which was excavated by a 14.4 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The excavated rock types included limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. Based on observations and measurements the overbreak was divided into four zones. Approximately half the tunnel length was excavated through the Queenston Formation, which locally is a shale to mudstone. Three of the four overbreak zones were within the Queenston. Zone 1 includes the formations above the Queenston Formation, Zones 2 and 4 are border regimes with little or no influence from St. Davids Buried Gorge and Zone 3 is the area influenced by the gorge. Zones 2 through 4 can be generally summarized as having overbreak as the result of stress induced spalling. Zone 2 marks the transition from slabbing at the Whirlpool contact in the stress shadow to spalling towards Zone 3. The behaviour of Zone 3 is interrupted from the typical high stress behaviour due to the presence of St. Davids Buried Gorge. As the tunnel passed from the gorge the high regional stresses induce spalling, which creates the typical notch shaped overbreak geometry of Zone 4.Three modelling approaches were used to back analyze the brittle failure process at the NTP: damage initiation and spalling limit, laminated anisotropy modelling, and ubiquitous joint approaches. Analyses were conducted for three tunnel chainages: 3+000, 3+250, and 3+500 m because the overbreak depth increased from 2 to 4 m. All approaches produced similar overbreak geometries to those measured. The laminated anisotropy modelling approach was able to produce overbreak depths and chord closures closest to those measured, using a joint normal to shear stiffness ratio between 1 and 2. The back analysis results were able to produce sets of stress and strength inputs for different sections of the tunnel at the transition from overbreak Zone 3 to 4. The back analysis procedure demonstrates the importance of including the anisotropic stiffness in the numerical modelling approach to correctly capture the overbreak geometry and deformations around underground excavations."

IF you ask the average American to define 'total war' he is apt to fumble for an answer. But in Britain everyone knows the answer, because Britain has mobilized its total labour force, including women. If we were to match, proportionately to our population, Britain's mobilization of labour, we should have 60,000,000 people working full time in the armed services, civilian defence, and war industries. Actually we have fewer than 35,000,000 so employed. In Britain two out of every three persons between the ages of fourteen and sixty-five are so engaged. For the first time in the history of any democracy Britain conscripts women for service in the army, navy, and air force. Two hundred thousand British women have been conscripted for the army, known as ATS, meaning Auxiliary Territorial Service. There are more women in the air force than the total personnel of the RAF at the outbreak of the war and almost all of the land base jobs of the British navy are now handled by women. In addition to cooking and office work, Britain's women soldiers and sailors are driving trucks and motorcycles, repairing motor vehicles, packing and repacking parachutes, installing, inspecting, and maintaining gun equipment and ammunition of combat planes after each raid, raising and lowering barrage balloons, forecasting weather, manning harbour craft, sending and receiving radio messages. A normal ack-ack unit is composed of 229 women and 189 men. The women man the gun height finders and predictors, give bearings, and signal to fire.

The atmospheric leaching of chalcopyrite concentrates using acidic ferric sulfate lixiviants is well known to suffer from slow leach kinetics and poor copper recoveries. A number of approaches have been proposed for improving both leach kinetics and recoveries in this system. Many of these, while effective, suffer from high CAPEX and/or OPEX. As many mine sites begin transitioning from heap leaching of copper oxides to processing of primary copper sulfides, cost-efficient leach processes that are compatible with existing SX/EW processes will be needed to maintain existing cathode production. To this end, FLSmidth is exploring process options and reactor technology for the hydrometallurgical processing of primary sulfides. One approach that appears to be highly effective at increasing copper recoveries takes advantage of the enhanced reactivity of transitory, surface-defect structures generated during particle fracture. Significant process efficiencies are gained by matching the rate of grinding to the rate of electrochemical leaching in Mechano-Chemical leach processes. The patent-pending FLSmidth® ROL process uses a Stirred Media Reactor (SMRt reactor) to achieve copper recoveries of 97+% in 6 hours or less. This approach overcomes many of the surface passivation problems that have hindered other atmospheric leach processes. New insights to leach mechanisms are presented.

IN the year 1933, workings at the No. 12 colliery, New Waterford, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, had advanced to a point where additional ventilation would soon be required. Furthermore, development of the mine was being .made to practically double the output of coal. Consequently, authorization was given to sink a shaft to the workings. The location selected is on the west side of the mine, about one and a half miles from the slope mouth and on the Low Point shore, some 250 feet from high-water mark. The cliff at this point is 40 feet high, with the land rising on a slope of about 5 per cent to the shaft. Figure 1 shows the location with reference to the colliery workings. The strata through which the shaft was to be sunk were pretty well known from diamond-drill borings previously made, and it was believed that water would be encountered to a depth of at least 250 feet to 300 feet. It was planned, therefore, to seal-off the water by the pumping of cement grout under high pressure. This method was considered to be the most economical means of handling the water during sinking, and would also result in a permanently dry shaft. Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the strata. The permanent shaft hoist and fan were to be electrically driven, which would necessitate the construction of a transmission line between the colliery and the shaft; therefore, it was arranged that the sinking equipment would have electric drive. As all equipment, materials used in construction, and supplies were to be hauled by truck, a roadway 1,800 feet long was required from the main highway to the site, and as heavy loads would be hauled during the fall, winter, and succeeding spring, this road was ballasted with 18 inches of clinkered material obtained from a burned culm bank one and a half miles distant. Actual field work was begun by the Company's own forces early in October. Work preparatory to sinking-in addition to the roadway and trans-mission line-included the construction of the reinforced-concrete shaft collar and fan drift connection; the permanent timber headframe (which was to be used also as the sinking headframe); the permanent reinforced-concrete building to house the shaft hoist and fan drive; and the erection of temporary buildings and installation of all equipment for sinking and lining the shaft and for cementation.

This paper investigated the loss of cyanide via oxidation in CIP or CIL processes by relating the cyanide oxidation to its major oxidation product, cyanate. The results showed that the oxidation of both free cyanide and copper cyanide complexes are substantially enhanced by the presence of carbon. The rate of cyanide oxidation was found to occur in the order: Cu(CN)32- > CN- > Cu(CN)2-. The cyanide oxidation rate in the presence of copper and carbon increased significantly with increasing dissolved oxygen concentration, typical of CIL vs. CIP conditions. Cyanide oxidation rate of iron, zinc or nickel cyanide complexes was minimal.

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

"Fording Coal Limited is one of Canada's largest producers of metallurgical coal for the export market. Medium- to highvolatile coals are mined at its Fording River operations in southeastern British Columbia. This paper discusses some of the mine design and production related problems encountered, and how they have been resolved. Other aspects of the operation such as geography, geology and standard mining methods employed are also covered.IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia<1>. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 19,635 hectares of coal lands, having an estimated resource of 3.5 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal. Total reserves are approximately 520 million tonnes.Fording Coal is owned 600Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises Limited and 400Jo by Cominco Limited. Cominco itself is owned approximately 540Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees. The head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located in British Columbia, approximately 70 km north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/ British Columbia boundary, only 150 km by air and 320 km by road from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45. 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal over fifteen years, commencing in 1972, at an annual rate of 3 .05 million tonnes per year. The mine is presently expanding annual production capacity from the original 3.0 million long tons (3.05 million tonnes) to in excess of 5.0 million tonnes.Concurrent with this production expansion, a vigorous marketing effort has diversified Fording's customers to include additional countries in the Pacific Rim area. Three cleaned coal products are now marketed compared to the single ""standard blend"" product originally shipped to satisfy the Japanese contract. The product specifications are listed in Table I."

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger&apos;s and Kick&apos;s proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond&apos;s Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. "IntroductionIn the 1970s, environmental concerns and associated liabilities were a new and unknown aspect of corporate risk. Today, social concerns and the associated conflicts that they can generate constitute a rapidly expanding aspect of risk. Although not a new phenomena — the Bougainville copper mine was forced into closure in 1988 — social risk has emerged as considerably more important, and increasingly visible, in the last few years. Social risk is now an aspect of all mining activities which needs to be calculated into project assessments, and to be managed throughout the life of a project. While social risk has a number of aspects at the corporate level, such as company image and shareholder relations, at the level of the individual project, its primary component is social acceptability, and the principal tool for managing it is the Social Licence to Operate.Social Risk in Latin AmericaThroughout Latin America there are newly modernized mineral codes and economic systems introduced over the last ten years which, together with new environmental legislation, look very much like regulations in developed countries. To the corporations, the existence of these instruments means that the risks from the environmental issues associated with the project are known; they are legislated, defined, quantifiable and hence manageable.It seems ironic that, just when comprehensive regulations for the environmental management of mining have been put in place throughout Latin America, there arise an increasing number of challenges to mining activities. For, in spite of the apparent guarantees provided by these new legislative reforms, communities in Latin America today are more frequently standing up and taking exception to the presence of mining companies, or the ways in which the companies are conducting themselves. The viability of projects becomes threatened because they are considered socially unacceptable, a phenomenon that we describe as social risk. These challenges are less about opposing mining activities than many people would think. Rather, they are based on an increasing desire on the part of the local population to have some measure of control over their own future, and to participate in the development process from the earliest stages."

This paper presents the results of theoretical and technological studies on leaching ore of Bozshakol deposit. The major oxidized copper mineral of Bozshakol ore is atacamite, and the content of malachite, azurite, cuprite, copper sulfide minerals is insignificant. The chemical composition of the test sample, with mass, %: 0.9 Cu; 55.00 SiO2; 22.40 AI2O3; 9.00 Fe2O3; 2.24 CaO; 3.56 MgO. Technological studies on leaching the ore were carried out with sulfuric acid 5, 15, 25 and 50 g/dm3 in one and multistage (up to 4 stages) countercurrents. Size of ore 1 mm, the ratio S : L 1: 4. It was found that with increasing of acid concentration from 5 to 50 at one-mode leaching the copper extraction reaches 55 %. At multistage leaching the copper recovery reaches 73 %, a productive solution containing g/dm3: Cu - 4; Fe – 1.2; Al – 1.1 at a pH of 2.8. When leaching the cinders obtained by ore roasting in an atmosphere with limited value of oxygen, with increasing of the roasting temperature from 650 up to 750 °? the extraction of copper from the Bozshakol ores reduced from 31.5% down to 24.4%. The rate of filtration is markedly increased compared with the crude ore. When leaching the cinders obtained by roasting in a nitrogen atmosphere a marked increase up to 87.2-88 % of copper extraction from Bozshakol ores is observed. As an extractant for the extraction of copper from the pregnant solution used LIX984N extractant in kerosene. On the basis of the calculations it was built extraction isotherm and modeled processes of copper recovery with the circuit 2E + 1P, allowing up to 93 and 96% extraction. The through extraction of copper from the ore in the electrolyte was 67 %. Technology is recommended for semi test.

"When pyrite oxidizes in dark grey/black, calcareous, mudrocks or in argillaceous limestones, ferrous sulfate is formed and sulfuric acid is released. The sulfuric acid combines with the calcite present in the rock and calcium sulfate (gypsum) develops. When this occurs on the outer edges of aggregate particles, the gypsum forms in the matrix hence there may be little expansion of the general material. However, when the chemical reactions occur within the rock fragments, particularly on microscopic, clayrich, laminae, the developing crystals exert a significant pressure on the host material. If the rock is medium strong to strong, the force of crystallization splits the rock along the weaker planes, facilitating the ingress of the oxidizing agents and the continuation of the chemical reactions. In addition to causing dilation/heave, some of the engineering properties of the material are changed, including the strength, Los Angeles value, water absorption etc. As a consequence material, which at the time of quarrying would be acceptable for use beneath floors or hardstandings, would no longer be considered suitable.INTRODUCTIONMudrocks accreting in aerobic environments are frequently disturbed by organisms and as a consequence there is often little sign of bedding. In contrast, sediments which have formed in anoxic environments commonly have distinct bedding planes which, because of the grain size of the accreting material, are often smooth and planar. These rocks are frequently referred to as shales, which O’Brien and Slatt (1990) define as “characterised by a finely laminated structure, which imparts a fissility approximately parallel to the bedding.” This should not be confused with rhythmic bedding where the variation in grain size results in lithological laminations or colour changes.Early geologists, in the stratigraphic naming of rocks, often used the term shale for material which is now more likely to be described as mudstone or mudrock (Hawkins and Pinches, 1992). In many contexts, the width of the bedding is an important factor, not only in determining the rock name but also in indicating the potential engineering characteristics. Until recently a shale was considered to have bedding separations of less than 20mm, i.e. the bedding was described as laminated. However, in an engineering context, EN 14689: 2003, Annex A, defines shale by specifying a bedding thickness of < 6mm; such a material would be described as thinly laminated in BS 5930:1999. Ideally the term shale should be abandoned and be replaced by fissile mudstone or fissile mudrock."

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Une méthode basée sur la combinaison de multiples images d’entraînement est développée afin d’obtenir la bonne quantité de continuité à grande échelle et de variabilité à petite échelle. Un processus d’étalonnage fait correspondre la variabilité géologique spatiale entre les réalisations finales et l’ensemble des données de forage. "Phosphorus in iron ores is considered as a deleterious component to iron making reflecting in cold shortness of the produced steel. The present study investigates the phosphorus migration pattern resulting from thermal treatment of an oolitic-type iron concentrate with and without additives. To this end focused mineralogical and microscopic observations were performed. The results have shown that roasting with alkaline additive drives phosphorus outside the hematite hosting mineral, however it remains evenly distributed inside the volume of the oolites. It penetrates inside the newly formed cementing phases of Al- Na-Si-Fe-type and also fills the interstices between the crystals. Other than phosphorus, aluminum, calcium and iron tend also to migrate towards the amorphous-type cementing phase. Finally, the possibilities for P removal by means of magnetic separation and acid leaching of the roasted concentrate were evaluated. The obtained final product presents a standard iron concentrate suitable for steelmaking with its phosphorous being dropped from 0.71% to 0.05% and iron grade of a nearly 66% being reached. INTRODUCTIONSignificant proven reserves of iron ores are still not exploitable due to lack of an economically viable and efficient technology for removal of phosphorus. Among them are the oolitic iron ores with high phosphorus which are estimated to nearly 377 billion tons (Hernandez et al., 2012). Phosphorus is a deleterious component giving a cold shortness to steel and often is penalized if exceeding 0.07%. Most of the high-P iron ores are considered refractory since phosphorus is finely disseminated and is evenly met as phosphate groups inclusions inside the limonite structure. Studies on inclusion of phosphorus in artificially synthesized goethite have shown that it is adsorbed as [HPO4]2- groups bridging the adjacent iron ions (Parfit et al., 1975). The high-phos iron ore originating from Lisakovsk deposit, Kazakhstan presents a similar mineralogical issue because the quantity of P, met as solid solution, is substantially higher than the one in P-containing minerals. A potential reason for that is the ore body formation process from the slow deposition of iron-rich precipitates together with clastic erosional sediments in rivers. There is significant quartz and clays inside and around the oolites. The deposit contains about 1.7 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves at 35–41% iron and 1.1 billion tons of inferred ore have been delineated possessing nearly the same chemical composition (Golubovskaya, 2003; Kokal et al., 2003)."

"Enclosed gear cases on board heavy mining equipment have traditionally been lubricated with regular heavy duty gear oils. However, equipment manufacturers, have recommended the use of an ISO-1000 gear oil for this application to ensure adequate lubricant film strength, especially at the higher end of the working temperature range. The majority of these ISO-1000 gear oils are based either on residual/asphaltic oil or synthetics, primarily higher viscosity polyalphaolefins. Although the performance of these lubricants has been satisfactory, they suffered other shortcomings that equipment users have lived with over the years.The major requirement at the user’s mine was to provide lubrication for the shovel Hoist gear case. Within such a gear case design, the gears and the roller bearings, that have different lubrication requirements, are lubricated with the same lubricant. Several lubricants were used, light gear oils as well as the recommended ISO-1000 heavy gear oils. On the one hand, the lighter oils performed adequately for the lubrication of the bearings that formed part of the enclosed gear system. These lighter oils did not perform as well for the lubrication of the gears due to their lower viscosities, resulting in shorter gear servicelives.On the other hand, the ISO-1000 gear oils performed well for the lubrication of the gears, but were too viscous to creep into the bearing elements to lubricate them adequately, especially during the cold northern Canadian winters. This resulted in catastrophic bearing failures and secondary damages to the gears.The challenge, then, was to formulate a lubricant which met the 1000 cSt at 40°C viscosity requirement as stipulated by the equipment manufacturer, while satisfactorily lubricating the bearings at the full working temperature range. This was achieved by the development of a semi-fluid grease lubricant, which has proven in field trials to give adequate performance in this application for the lubrication of both the bearings and gears down to -40°C.This product met the equipment manufacturer’s performance criteria and resolved, to a large extent, leakage of the lubricant through seals experienced with the use of conventional and synthetic gear oils.Although the main performance criteria of the fluid was its capability to lubricate the “Hoist” gear case, it was also used during the field trial in other gear cases on board the shovel to test its full capabilities.This unusual alternative lubricant was field tested and evaluated for more than two years. Based on this assessment, the product was reformulated to improve its fluidity, slumpability and the settling of debris/wear metals to the bottom of the gear cases. This reformulated softer grade, a semi-fluid grease, has been performing satisfactorily for more than eight months and is still undergoing longer term assessment."
