The arbitration process, and its drawbacks: Any time you have taken part in a major arbitration, and the decision, when it comes out, is not what you thought it would be (which is bound to happen occasionally), the normal reaction is something like æthe arbitrator got it wrongÆ. Again normally, when you have cooled down a bit, and you look in more detail at the decision, you can see, probably, æwhere he got it wrongÆ (it is only male arbitrators who get it wrong). Ultimately, when reason prevails, and you reflect on it, you can see that what really happened was that you failed to get the arbitrator to see what you were getting at in the point or points concerned. This is doubly frustrating, when you consider what has been involved in getting to this point, having been through it all at least twice. An alternative to this process may be the dispute review board.

Host-rock û wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.   Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

Air quality is a big topic of discussion in regional mining communities as well as urban environments situated close to port terminals handling bulk solids. Community perception of poor air quality can significantly affect the reputation of the mining operation and handling facilities. Dust monitoring for regulatory compliance relies on using a handful of accurate but very expensive sensors, usually situated at the boundary, relatively far from the activities that generate the airborne dust. These reference monitors measure dust leaving the site but dust mitigation and management on-site largely relies on operator judgement. At a fraction of the cost, small wireless solar powered units can be used to supplement reference monitors in real-time. Due to their compact nature, portability and low price, these units can be implemented on a mass scale to increase spatial resolution of dust measurements and, more importantly, in much closer proximity to both the dust generating activity and the sources of dust. This can provide valuable insights into the origins and timing of dust generation thus producing datadriven decision-making while minimising subjectivity. Similarly, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is another supplemental technology that can be used to increase the spatial resolution of dust measurements in near real-time, however, the cost of commercial systems even exceeds that of regulatory monitors. LiDAR also presents difficulties in quantifying dust plume concentrations. This study presents learnings of implementing both technologies for dust emissions management. Several low-cost sensor units and a fast-scanning custom-built 3D LiDAR system operating at a range of 1.5 km with a resolution of 1.5 m were deployed on a surface mine to monitor dust emissions from different activities. The project explores the use of real-time sensor data to quantify LiDAR measurements in parallel with integration into mine planning. The approach can assist in prioritising dust mitigation activities thereby reducing instances of emissions exceedance and minimising water use through databased and targeted application. Demonstrated is an opportunity for a step-change in industry best practice as well as commercialisation and operationalisation of the method across different industries, including future mineral extraction.

Mine site rehabilitation is the repair of the disturbance caused by mining on the immediate mining area and also on the surrounding environment. The long-term objectives of rehabilitation can vary from simply returning an area to a safe and stable condition, to restoring the mined land to a state as close as possible to its pre-mining condition, capable of being self-supporting and having a beneficial final land use. This paper investigates the importance and benefits of environmental planning, in particular for rehabilitation, and how input into daily operations can allow mining to progress with limited impact on the surrounding environment. It will also identify some of the key mistakes currently made during mining which could be averted by implementing prior planning and incorporating environmental consideration into daily operations. A number of rehabilitation opportunities will also be detailed for the different stages of the life cycle of a coal mine.

These include: The solving of many complex sampling optimisation problems with the simple approach of the worst case policy (WCP). A simple approach to single-stage sampling problems will be mentioned at continuation. In the plants, minimising the impact of border effects in incorrect samplers, so that the resulting samples are approximately correct and acceptable in practice because the bias risk attached to them is controlled. An essential requirement of product quality control in the mining industry is to be able to reliably predict key quality properties of finished product from the data available before the extraction of the ore. From a production viewpoint, the unit of data collection is generally the input and output data set for each shift of crusher production, but could be any period where mine precrusher data can be reliably matched with product data.This paper demonstrates that linear regression models can be used to predict crush grades from blast grades, even where the crush material is blended from multiple sources or pits for each of which differing regression models might apply. The advantage of using increasingly complex regressions models to match the available data to give increasingly more powerful models is examined. The best model for any application will be a balance between required predictability, available data and the business’ tolerance for complex models.The regression modelling approach has several advantages over the more classic method of run-of-mine (ROM) crusher trials, which will be discussed.The models can use any predictor variable such as grade, geotype and in situ density provided the preextraction data set can be reliably matched with post-crusher data and is significant as a predictor. The models have been used extensively in the generation of the daily crusher plan with the aim of maintaining finished product grade. This approach has also been used associated with exploration drilling and long-term planning.It is acknowledged that there are inherent problems in fitting lump and fines grade to a linear model. However, these problems are minor when they are used for interpolation within the window spanned by the shift blend records used to produce the model. This paper discusses some of the issues limiting linear regression models in this application, and suggests methods enabling consistent models to be formulated

In spite of the efforts done in the past to implement in Codelco best practice guidelines and standards on several important sampling, assaying and variability issues, many people, particularly top managers and operators, are still not aware of the relevance of the use of the principles and practice of geostatistics, sampling theory, analytical chemistry and the understanding of processes variability from rock to cathodes. As a result, an important challenge for the sampling community is to find out the causes of this lack of awareness and to develop communication skills to influence the organisation, particularly the top management level. This situation is not affecting only Codelco; it is a common characteristic of the copper mining industry. The main cause is cultural. Judeo-Christian and occidental sciences are deterministic. This implies a disregard of process variation and the assumption that homogeneity is omnipresent. Another important aspect of the cultural challenge is education. Education is the most efficient way to transfer a system of ideas, traditions and practices. To implement proper courses of sampling theory and geostatistics and support to multidisciplinary education at universities, mining companies will improve teamwork between geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists and chemists. The improvements will imply a more sustainable and efficient mining business.

This paper presents an overview of recent developments in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process to provide the background for a more detailed analysis of environmental and social constraints that the Heavy Mineral Mining industry has encountered over the past decade. Four cases studies are reviewed to provide a context for further analysis and identification of cross cutting environmental and social issues that either resulted in the projects not proceeding, or in the Australian case study, places existing operations under significant pressure from anti-mining lobbyists. The Xolobeni project, from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, is presented as the primary case study because it is recent, topical, and accessible; and raised numerous issues related to mining in a sensitive environment. A proposal to mine an area adjacent to the Okefenokee swamps in 1997 was also met with strong opposition from various environmental groups in Georgia, USA. This case study is briefly reviewed to further understand what ultimately resulted in the project not proceeding. Opposition to mining at North Stradbroke Island is reviewed to identify current issues more applicable to a developed country. A further review of a strategic assessment undertaken at Wavecrest, Eastern Cape, South Africa is provided in support of possible solutions to the challenges identified in the case studies. Important common themes were identified, including in some cases unfortunate timing of the environmental studies, but in all cases opposition was due to ecological sensitivity, landscape quality and sense of place. In one case study limitations to the EIA process included inadequate detail in the specialist investigations and insufficient information on mitigation. In all cases public participation was a limitation. It was either insufficient; flawed through possible bias; too ‘top down’ and required engagement with mobilised, motivated lobbyists. There was also insufficient investigation of social impacts, particularly amongst rural communities directly affected by a project. Generally alternatives were inadequately considered, a recognised limitation of project level EIA. It is concluded that the EIA process should be started as early as possible (at prefeasibility), and that investigations should be expanded from a typical fatal flaw assessment to one that applies methodologies used in strategic assessment. In particular, opportunities and constraints of the natural and social environment should be assessed in the context of the mining option as well as other options, to allow for a more meaningful assessment of alternatives. Public participation must form an important part of this initial study, despite the potential risks associated with public engagement at an early stage in the project. The application of the IFC Performance Standards; and expanding the scope of the EIA into an environmental, social and health impact assessment will lead to a more rigorous procedure, and result in more defensible products which could successfully unlock the key to the resources in these sensitive areas.

The uncertainty of geomaterials properties is commonly encountered in resource engineering applications, especially in mining engineering where the rock mass texture, joints, fractures and damage zones can impose the mining method and operation cycles. In the present research work, we focus on the elastic properties of rock masses. We use stochastic numerical simulation of fractured rock masses to estimate their Young moduli. The procedure starts with field mapping campaigns which are conducted to evaluate the locations, dip angles, strike and trace lengths of pre-existing fractures. We develop statistical law parameters of the natural fracture network to represent the weakness patterns. In addition, we use HLA-Dissim, a recently developed and validated Matlab program, to simulate the propagation of monochromatic longitudinal waves and derive the equivalent elastic modulus of fractured rock masses. Such procedure applies within a simulation domain, which is greater than an Elementary Representative Volume.At a second stage, we conduct finite element simulations to validate the previous approach. The matrix and the actual fractures zones are reproduced in the model to mimic the natural set-up. The block is excited on particular positions and its response is evaluated on predefined spots. Real field rock fracture mapping data and monitored single-hole blast induced vibrations are used to validate the theoretical and numerical approaches discussed herein. Comparison between the simulated and measured vibration records shows a great agreement which confirms that the proposed methodology has a full potential to predict and optimise multihole/multidelay blast-induced vibrations.CITATION:Hamdi, E and Karrech, A, 2015. In May 2000, Kanowna Belle Gold Mines (KBGM) carried out a detailed Truck versus Shaft Haulage Study. The study showed that whilst the shaft option had many operating cost benefits the capital costs were too high, therefore the truck option was selected. In May 2001, the concept of achieving æshaft typeÆ benefits without the capital costs was floated. This is achieved by separating the hoisting of ore from other mining activities. The general concept is that material from underground is transported to a central location and then transported to the surface by a special truck fleet, thus removing the dependency between trucks and loaders, providing the mine with surge capacity and decreasing operating costs. At KBGM these advantages have been gained by installing an ore pass system with a plate feeder at its base that directly loads trucks. This provides the mine with a haulage system with enough surge capacity to remove the interdependency between trucks and loaders. The plate feeder is situated just off the decline which creates the opportunity to use larger more reliable, lower cost trucks. A number of truck types were considered for the truck loop including Elphinstone AD55Æs which are the truck type being used on site prior to the truck loop, CAT 775EÆs and power trailer road trains. This paper covers the philosophy behind the truck loop, the truck selection process, project installation and commissioning, people issues and the benefits expected by the operation. As of May 2002, the project is nearing completion, with decline haulage expected to commence in July 2002.

It is proposed to consider a new access, mining and hoisting system for underground deposits, as an alternative to the commonly used decline or vertical shaft access. The proposed system offers fundamental improvements in gathering of exploration data, reduction of capital expenditure and significant savings in mine operating costs. The cost reductions are achieved through:superior orebody definition by Supersucker winzing on ore prior to the commencement of capital development; considerable reduction of capital development in waste; full capitalisation on all benefits of a raisebored excavation; introduction of rubber tyred skip and rubber tyred Mine Rapid Response Vehicle; introduction of simplified ore handling system and reduction of underground mobile diesel fleet; and introduction of minimum maintenance shaft concept. The system is applicable to deposits ranging from shallow, low dip angle, narrow vein, high-grade to bigger, massive type vertical mineralisations accessed from the surface, preferably from the bottom of an open pit; it is also suitable as a down dip extension of an existing underground mine. The system is highly conducive to mine automation and emerging trend aimed to increase the ratio of mined metal/mineral to mined waste. It offers substantial reduction in diesel exhaust gas emissions to the mine atmosphere.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. A common problem in the mining industry is that company exploration groups operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company; resulting in poor knowledge transfer (Qureshi and Briggs, 2006) and often priority conflicts with mine geology, operations and project departments. In recognition of this problem, Newcrest created a Minerals Division responsible for stewardship and governance of mineral assets across the value chain from reconnaissance to rehabilitation. It was recognised at an early stage that effective collaboration both internally and externally would be required to improve decision making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies is generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions. However, modern IT-based collaboration systems and practices are relatively simplistic compared to the long-standing practices associated with collaboration and knowledge management in science and engineering disciplines such as geology and mining.The authors of this paper have started a trial of a 12-point plan for effective collaboration, which recognises that significant efficiencies can be gained and barriers to future success removed if more effective collaboration can be achieved between science and engineering divisions in a company along with external professionals and with the collective intelligence (Tapscott and Williams, 2006) of the outside world. To meet growth aspirations some companies, like Newcrest Mining Ltd, are adopting this comprehensive, step change approach by moving from a closed model the isolates mine geologists to an open and collaborative model that uses IT visualisation systems strategically. The paper describes how an open model provides people with the right work environment and the right information at the right time, which will help individuals and workgroups to work more collaboratively day-to-day. The aim is to achieve speed, focus and mitigate risk through an environment where everyone and anyone can contribute effectively (Cisco, 2008).

Our ultimate resources come from the Sun and the Earth System. At this time we face a world crisis in energy, water and soil resources. Global pollution problems are increasing in almost all nations. There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.   There is a great need to improve science, natural science, education at all levels. All people must know how our planet works and that fluctuations, some inevitable, some controllable, are inevitable and that we must prepare for them. And it is clear that protecting the environment, eliminating pollution, preserving bio diversity is good economics. Ecology Economy cannot be separated.

When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

The Basil Cu/Co deposit comprises a 26.5 Mt Inferred Resource of copper and cobalt, grading 0.57?per cent Cu and 0.05 per cent Co. It lies in the Harts Range, Central Australia, within the Riddock Amphibolite of the Irindina Province. Analysis of drilling within the mineralised zone of the deposit determined a spatial association between pyrrhotite with high magnetic susceptibility and chalcopyrite, following a strong magnetic trend as determined from airborne geophysics. A study was commissioned to examine if geophysical inversion could predict the distribution of sulfide mineralisation based on pyrrhotite from drill hole intersections, as well as predicting further mineralisation at depth or in the vicinity of the deposit. Petrophysical and geostatistical analysis of drilling susceptibility and mineralisation provided a basis of property distribution inside the model. This was followed by 3D geological modelling of mineralisation based on domain kriging of drill hole susceptibility sensitivity testing of signal to source depth, and distribution was performed using 3D forward modelling. Stochastic inversion generated alternative 3D geological models, which were tested for behaviour and adherence to observed drilling data and geostatistical limitations using GeoModeller software. Predicted mineralisation distribution was compared with conventional geostatistical modelling and found to be in agreement in planar behaviour but exhibiting possibly isoclinally folded trends, with reliability increasing closer to the surface. Predictions of mineralisation at greater depth and beneath weaker anomalies were more diffuse due to small model cell size having limited influence on the signal at depth.The Blackbush uranium deposit comprises a 64.5 Mt Inferred Resource, grading 230 ppm U in the Pirie Basin south of Whyalla, South Australia. It directly overlies the radiogenic Samphire Granite and is considered a tertiary unconformity deposit. Sensitivity modelling was performed using high-resolution ground gravity to see if a deposit signature could be detected using gravity. This required 3D implicit modelling of the geology and mineralisation from drill hole data and characterisation of an associated physical property model using domain kriging in GeoModeller. Density models relied on exploiting an observed relationship between logged density and measured uranium oxide percentage. The residual gravity response of the background geology model identified the location of the uranium deposit. Stochastic inversion of the litho/property 3D model has refined the known distribution of uranium from drilling and provided structural insights into the deposit.These projects have become excellent case studies for exploiting the relationship between mineralisation and potential fields and for testing the applicability of using domain kriging of properties determined from drilling to build robust 3D geological models for stochastic geophysical inversion, leading to robust methods for exploration targeting and mineral deposit prediction.CITATION:Zengerer, M, 2014. Longwall mining operations have been in place in Australia since the early 1960s. This mining method is currently used to extract the bulk of coal obtained from underground mines in Australia (CSIRO, 2010). Despite the high tonnages extracted the expected utilisation of much equipment remains relatively low. To some extent this level of utilisation is influenced by the variability in conditions inherent in the mining process. This variability in production rates presents challenges to those attempting to design a coal clearance system. The difficulty is to design a system that has sufficient capacity to support production, without over capitalising or incurring high operating costs. The need to allow for a series of largely unplanned events in the design of a coal clearance system makes simulation modelling an ideal technology to employ. Simulation modelling is a methodology that allows a system with interacting components to be modelled over time, while explicitly taking into account unplanned events that may disrupt operations.This paper discusses how dynamic simulation models have been used to assist in the design of coal clearance systems. Typically this type of modelling has been used to look at the likely profile of production rates from the Longwall shearer and to determine how well various proposed combinations of belts, bins and stockpiles would support production.

The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012. Mass Blasts are generally required at the completion of longhole stoping cycles to maximise the recovery of ore from a specific orebody. During the course of mining, the practice is to leave pillars of ore to support the opening left by extracted ore and to mitigate stresses from working areas of the stope. These pillars usually contain ore that has been included in the resource evaluation and is highly valuable to the mining operation. Due to their stressed nature, the removal of pillars by conventional blasting techniques, through small blasts, can result in pillars being reduced beyond their critical size and ultimately failing, rendering the ore unrecoverable. The AurionGold Kanowna Belle Gold Mine operates a Mine to Mill philosophy. This philosopy requires the fine tuning of blasting to provide the best possibe ore feed at the highest grade for mill productivity. This means that ore to the mill must be well fragmented from blasting that provides high extraction rates from draw points, with minimal dilution from overbreak or fall off, and sized to maximise SAG mill throughput. The AT04 Mass Blast contained significant ore reserves which were required to meet gold production targets. KBGB needed the AT04 Mass Blast to perform as well as if not better than conventional stope blasts to maintain mill production. This paper describes the circumstances, planning philosophy, techniques, including the use of Electronic Initiation Systems and Bulk Emulsion Explosives, and results that provided a highly successful outcome.
