Background A recent development in many industries,' including the mining industry, has been ever increasing acceptance and adoption of extended (12-hour) shifts and compressed work cycles compensated by more time off work by employees between cycles. In the Western Australian mining industry development of `long-distance-commute' (LDC) coincided with adoption of 12-hour rotating shifts. Preludes to LDC were the `construction-style' rosters with two crews plus allowance for annual and sick leave relievers working the statutory 13 consecutive shifts followed by one shift off. Crews rotated day to night shift weekly or at fortnightly intervals. Average hours of 72 to 78 per week were common. The author had personal experience working these rosters in the East Pilbara of Western Australia from 1977 to 1982. Workers tolerated these rosters until a suitable combination of frustration, boredom, despair and the `Five Grand Fever' triggered them to `pull the pin' and head for relaxation in Bangkok, Manila, Nimbin, or Margaret River according to their personal tastes.

Historically, key closure risks have been studied during operations and then further assessed as cessation of mining approaches. Only in the past couple of decades or so has progressive rehabilitation and closure become an integral part of regulatory frameworks, sustainable mine planning and more recently, new project and development planning. It is now broadly accepted that the best closure outcomes occur when rehabilitation and closure are properly considered upfront, during the early stages of a mine development project and well before mining occurs. Increasingly, regulatory processes are requiring more diligence on early closure planning, often as part of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and approvals process, rather than later in dedicated closure study phases. There is an opportunity to use the information generated during this phase to make better decisions on project selection, design, mining methodology and all other facets of the mining operation.

The optimisation and validation of shearer cutting methods is a time consuming engineering task. Many different parameters, of which not all can be controlled, can vary. The easiest solution, to increase the installed power and the longwall length, is not always the best. A different cutting method can increase the capacity without the need of new machines. The Department for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery at RWTH Aachen University therefore developed ProSL, the simulation tool for shearer and longwall operations. ProSL enables the engineer to create his own cutting methods and compare it with other methods. Machine-data can easily be varied to see the impact on the method. The research shows that sophisticated longwall methods increase the productivity of the system. The paper presents the results of the calculation with ProSL and shows how higher efficiency and lower costs can be achieved.

The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. extremely powerful tools for building predictive and generative models. ML can be used for building highly accurate regression and classification models. But without careful data science and statistical analysis, a regression or classification model could be highly biased and completely wrong – and we may not even realise. An example rock density estimation task will be used to illustrate the potential gains and possible pitfalls in using ML and AI in Mineral Resource estimation. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing! For most simple regression or classification problems, very little. For density estimation, using the global mean may be all that is possible, but the resource classification would need to reflect the uncertainty in global estimation of tonnage. Everything! From data collection and measurement, from selecting ML and AI techniques and designing the analysis workflow to our own cognitive bias. The things that could go wrong are vast and may include but not limited to asking the wrong question, not asking questions, data bias, measurement errors, insufficient data coverage, not collecting the right variables, not collecting enough observations, collecting clustered samples, unbalanced data, filtering out data without reason (outliers), clipping data (outliers), relying on automatic feature selection, including irrelevant variables, excluding relevant variables, geological interpretation, changing context, blindly following best practice, splitting small data sets, subsetting large data sets, using the wrong tool for the task, insufficient budget to complete the analysis, not allowing enough time for testing and experimentation (the science), focusing too much on building the model (the engineering), not learning from the data, our assumptions, our preconceptions, and our skill. This paper will explore the question of how training regression models to predict rock density are affected by gaps in the data (missing observations and missing variables). What could possibly go wrong?

Despite significant investment in safety in the mining industry (mostly focused on processes and systems), many companies are unable to sustain and further improve their performance resulting in continued workplace incidents. The problem persists despite the best efforts of companies and allocation of resources to achieve Zero Harm. A DSS survey in 2019 found that two out of five companies that cannot manage risks and face disaster, leave the market within five years. All safety/risk management systems have the common steps of risk identification, prioritisation, design of controls consistent with risk tolerance, and verification of implementation/operability of controls. This is then complimented with improvement to one or more of the above elements through learnings obtained from incident investigations. In principle, the above process should work to reduce risks to, and keeping them at, a risk level consistent with risk tolerance in the organisation.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. This paper stems from recent multidisciplinary research between mining engineering and health researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria, Canada. It considers the implications of a future state of sustainable mining development that places more emphasis on consideration of mine community health and sustainability within the definition of mine planning best practice. It reviews recently completed research studies on mining and other resource communities in British Columbia, Canada and a process undertaken by the research team to share research findings. It then examines the outcomes of this knowledge sharing process placing emphasis on the development of a more collaborative and enhanced mine planning process that integrates community- level indicators of health and sustainability to more effectively address mine impact-benefits. The paper concludes by discussing current initiatives that aim to benefit the mining industry, communities, and governments as they plan future mineral development projects.

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. Gentlemen, you heard the good Doctor has commissioned me to make a'summary of the proceedings to date and also to close the said proceedings. It seems that over the years the business of making a summary alternates between'Mr. Pearce and myself, also I,think that w~oever is around onthe day in question 'obtains the task and apparently I drew it this, year. It is hoped you will be patient as previous experience in this capacity'indicates that the best way to proceed is to have a brief summary on each paper and then do a summary of summa~ies. This makes the approacha little cumbersome but it is felt to be fair to each author and it brings'back to the audience some recollections of what transpired at the time and they can make their own decisions, which may not necessarily agree with those of the 'sum'marisor.

It is now recognised that rotary sample division is by far the best laboratory tool for extracting subsamples from a lot of material. In terms of sampling theory, rotary division, by virtue of the fact that it can extract many increments from the lot during the division process, radically reduces the variance due to distributional heterogeneity in the sample being divided. There are a number of occasions in sample preparation when it is necessary to extract a subsample of a target mass. To do this with rotary dividers taking a fixed fraction of the starting mass is a tedious task. In response to this problem, a variable split sample divider has been designed and built for the mineral industry. This paper discusses the utility of the device and presents test data showing that the machine is capable of making accurate mass split while overcoming segregation in the material being divided.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

Two main aspects need to be considered when analysing a potential petroleum development project. Firstly, an estimate of the recoverable reserves must be made, and in many instances, these reserves must serve as collateral to finance development if outside capital is required. Secondly, the likely production profile and cash flow has to be established, and this cash flow then must meet debt service require- ments and in addition generate the required profits. In making these crucial deter- minations, the impact on the project of a wide variety of risks has to be analysed. A computer model, which represents the project in its entirety, is a great aid in determining project viability. Such a model requires imput from geologists, engineers and economists, and interpretation of the model must also be a joint effort. Communications, and inter react ion amongst individuals and disciplines is essential if the best answers are to be obtained

To construct the accessing railroad line to the northern portal of Seikan Undersea Tunnel, nine tunnels amounting 7.4km in their total length were excavated through soft mudstones of young- er tertiary era with use of smaller-sized mechanic al excavators. Rocks were classified in four classes to which the tunnel support was designed respectively. Of several combinations of driving equipments stu- died comparatively, the method using the mechani- cal excavators was estimated to be the best choi- ce. The efficiency of the excavator was traced in every construction section and the data colle- cted was reviewed numerically. The result showed that the efficiency of the excavator dropped wh- ere the rocks were as hard as over 200kg/crif for compressive strength. And a few technigues in tunnelling i.e. contr- olling dusts in shotcreting, lattice arch, evaluati- ng measured deformations were tested and review- ed too.

The best long-term approach to exploration involves the use of extensive quality data and the integration of many different factors, methods and techniques. The successful exploration manager needs to integrate people, area selection and exploration methods, with the use of descriptive and genetic geological models. Based on a syn-metamorphic genetic model for Archaean gold, successful exploration in Western Australia requires the integration of data on anomalous gold, alteration, lithology and structure. Many other parameters such as geophysics, geochemistry and regolith studies provide additional, indirect information that needs to be integrated into the overall exploration programme. Timely access to research findings and ability to integrate these into immediate exploration has contributed considerably to the success of the gold industry in Western Australia since 1980. Extensive and deeper drilling, and the ability of computers to handle the volume of data generated have enabled effective testing of many more geological targets.

Perilya Broken Hill, from its inception, has budgeted for more than 2.0 million tonnes per year from the Southern Operations. This tonnage was planned to come from in excess of 100 stopes per year in a remnant mining environment with numerous mined voids and consequent mining challenges. To mine an average of two stopes per week requires patience, flexibility and detailed knowledge to best manage the potential risks and hazards. The evolution of the Perilya Broken Hill Mine Planning Process has necessitated the establishment of a process to identify and manage these risks during the planning stage in a reliable but efficient manner. This process is to ensure that vital steps for each stope are not missed, and that each personÆs work can be tracked by other members of the team. This paper outlines the planning process from resource to stope closure.

Complex ores, characterised by intimate intergrowths between minerals, have previously been treated by flotation with limited success. The most common problem has been that the liberation size is often finer than the lower size limit for selection flotation. A technique has been developed in which the problem is overcome by the use of a selective agglomeration procedure in which the values are coalesced with oil to a size suitable for flotation prior to introduction into the flotation machine. A complex lead ore was characterised by QEM*SEM mineralogy as having a mean galena liberation size of 15 ¦m. The best recovery of lead at 50 per cent Pb grade by standard flotation was 53 per cent. After application of the procedure, 86 per cent recovery was obtained after a single cleaner step. The oil functions as a bridging liquid in the presence of conventional collectors which render the mineral oleophillic.

Most orebodies have one or more boundaries which are gradational, where the decision to stop mining is based on an economic cut-off. To maximise profit, this cut-off grade must be chosen correctly. It is necessary to review cut-off grades regularly, as the optimum cut-off grade changes with time, and major changes are hard to implement in a working mine without disruption to production schedules.Whenever a cut-off grade is used, there will be errors in its application caused by errors in the estimation of block grade. These can be minimised by stringent quality control in sampling and by the use of kriging, which attempts to minimise the absolute errors in grade estimation. The kriging method used should produce the most accurate estimates of marginal grade blocks - this will not necessarily be the technique that gives the best overall prediction of head grades.

This paper explores recent industry training programs and lessons for supervisors. The Belbin Team Role model was used to increase participants’ awareness of behaviour and its application. The application of the Belbin model to underground, open cut mine and quarry supervisors is discussed.The key to team success may rest with the expertise and experience of its members, but increasingly effectiveness depends on how team members understand, acknowledge and support each other’s behavioural strengths. Discovering strengths is a challenge, both for their measurement and for the encouragement of team members to use the knowledge of themselves and others in the team. Using behavioural models provides a constructive approach and a language for supervisors as they build personal motivation and engagement.Prima facie, the mineral industry’s work may be too vigorous for teams and their managers could be more prone to use ‘solo’ or traditional management styles. Managers and supervisors must know when work allocated to a team is appropriate or where individual effort should be applauded and rewarded. For practical people with well-developed technical skills, improving the soft skills necessary for a supervisor requires some reflection and effort. The Belbin behavioural model can be an effective tool for recognising characteristics that can assist teams to be more productive.Experiencing the Belbin Team Role model as part of an industry qualification is important for supervisors studying to refine their team leadership skills. Data are available for participants to assess the nature of their teams and to confront the appropriateness of the behavioural mix for the work of the team and its individual members.So what are the next steps? All team development must have a place in the strategic thinking and plans of the enterprise.
