Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.

Reconciliation of metal production from a sublevel cave (SLC) mining operation is a complicated process. SLC reconciliation is unlike reconciliation for open stope operations, where a tonnage of extracted ore can be assigned to an exact volume of in situ ore, and a direct comparison made between the estimation of contained metal and actual metal production. In SLC operations the ore extracted from a particular SLC drawpoint will be composed in part from the parcel of freshly blasted in situ material, in part from varying components of ore material (from cave stocks) flowing down from other previously mined areas vertically above the current draw position and in part from external dilution. This leads to difficulties in reconciling production grades against estimated grades. The problem is that we know how much metal we have produced but we can not precisely say where it has come from. Metal production reconciliation is fundamental in assessing ore reserve estimation accuracy and performance and in determining a draw management strategy for SLC mining. In terms of contained metal, differences in extracted metal compared to in situ metal represent changes to cave stocks. To generate local estimates of the cave stocks, differences in metal for each ring are treated as additions to or subtractions from a series of vertical columns of stocks extending throughout the height of the cave. The sum of metal differences (extracted versus in situ) for each vertical column results in a residual metal map at any particular mining level. The metal maps show areas where the metal production has been greater than or less than expected. The maps also highlight areas in the cave where residual metal is located, areas where targeted overdraw can reduce cave stocks.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

This review paper presents an integrated and practical insight to blasting geology and its importance. This approach involves developing blasting objective up front and implementing geology specific blast designs. The author refers to this approach as ‘starting at both ends’. There are many human-imposed controls on blasting operations, such as: safety, security, legislative, company standards, heritage, and environmental constraints. Thus it is possible for some operators to lose sight of the controls imposed by nature. This paper demonstrates how site geology controls or influences many aspects of the rock breaking processes and how a focus on this aspect has potential to add considerable value to mining operations. It is obvious that mining companies concentrate their efforts on economic/ore geology (good rock geology). However it is the author’s experience that they also concentrate on engineering geology (bad rock geology) only when forced to do so by the ground conditions, but seem to run out of puff before they apply blasting geology (big rock geology). This paper contains five main sections. In the first section, the impact of geological controls on blasthole drilling is briefly discussed in terms of drill selection, penetration rates, bit wear, blasthole stability, blasthole deviation, and health precautions. In the second section the geological controls on aspects of geometric design are reviewed. These include: hazardous minerals, valuable minerals, selection of the blasting techniques, geological structures, blasting direction, and blasting geometry. Section three overlaps with the geometric design section and deals with aspects related to explosives. Topics addressed include selecting the explosive type based on geology, distribution of explosive charge in space and time, explosive performance, and the rock response to explosive loading. In the fourth section, examples are given of the operational complexity needed to implement a blast to cater for difficult bench geologies, environment constraints, past mining (voids) and need for a high degree of quality control. Section five demonstrates geological controls on blast results. Blasting results include the muck pile characteristics, downstream handling and processing, damage to the remaining rock, and blasting emissions.

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.

As part of the AMIRA P843 project Keeney and Walters (2008) describe how the principal components analysis (PCA) method can be used to identify classes of samples with similar metallurgical characteristics. However PCA does not take account of the location of each sample in 3D space. This paper describes a study to analyse the spatial distributions of the classes and determine appropriate modelling methods to control the estimation of the comminution parameters and mill performance indices into a 3D block model. This includes but is not restricted to geostatistical techniques that are used for grade modelling. The starting point for the study is the class definitions and the regression models for estimating the comminution parameters and performance indices. Each sample is assigned a class and the spatial distribution of each class has been analysed using different techniques including the calculation of variograms. This establishes whether the classes can be used as domain control for estimation into the block model – a procedure similar to using geological rock type domains for controlling the estimation of grades for a resource model. However, standard geostatistical estimation methods such as ordinary kriging assume that the variable being estimated is additive or linear. This assumption is valid for variables such as grade but this is not necessarily the case for the comminution parameters or the performance indices. Therefore the estimation procedure must either use variables that are definitely additive or the effect of potential non-additivity must be tested and accounted for where possible.The results of the study show how performance indices such as recovery, throughput and specific power can be estimated into the block model. This model is then combined with the geological model to provide a multi-parametric model that is used to optimise the mine planning and scheduling activities which can lead to significant improvements in NPV.

The detailed mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat was first studied in 1942 (Edwards, 1943).At that time the workings did not extend far below the 750ft. level. Since then development has been extended to the 1,390ft. level, and -at the request of the management of Lake George Mines Ltd., an examination of the ore from the deeper levels has been made as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.This account is. based on that examination (Mineragraphic Rept. No. ,537, C.S.I.R.O.)GENERAL GEOLOGYThe geology of the Lake George Mines has been described briefly in The Geology of Australian Ore Deposits (1953), and in much greater detail in an unpublished report by K. Glasson (1952). The area consists of fossiliferous Upper Ordovician sediments overlain by volcanics (Kohinoor VoJcanics), and by fossiliferous Silurian sediments. The volcanies comprise a series of· flows ranging in' composition from dacite to rhyolite, with interbedded tuft's and shale lenses.The region has been strongly folded. The regional strike is from 340° to 355°, and dips are from 75°W. to 75°E, A major syncline, pitching 200 N., occupies the centre of the area. The Kohinoor Volcanic'l outcrop as two bands which represent the east and west limbs of this syncline.The Volcanks in the western limb, with whIch the orebodies are associated, are more strongly sheared than those in the eastern limb.

The mining industry is becoming increasingly focused on pre-concentration due to its potential economic and environmental benefits, particularly for the more complex, low-grade, high throughput operations now being developed. Advances in technology have seen bulk ore sorting (BOS) trialled at several operations. However, BOS should not be seen as a ‘silver bullet’, it can offer significant benefits, but only under the right conditions. Deposits with interspersed mineralogy or disseminated, fine-grained minerals can be difficult for BOS. Large batches of barren or low-grade material are required for BOS to be effective. Hatch has recently completed several studies for clients who believed that bulk sorting was the most suitable pre-concentration technique for their operation, based only on an assumed sorter recovery or on laboratory trials of the chosen sensor. However, minimal consideration had been given to the heterogeneity of the deposit, the achievable separation batch size or sensor repeatability. Evaluation of BOS needs to consider both heterogeneity and sensor suitability. The valuable or gangue mineral must be present in such a way that it can be separated effectively in the large bulk sorting batch sizes, without competing minerals or changing ore characteristics affecting the metal upgrade or recovery. Also, the sensor chosen must be able to detect either the valuable mineral, a proxy for the valuable mineral, or a gangue mineral for rejection with sufficient accuracy and precision (repeatability). This paper presents three recent case studies, emphasizing markers which indicated that bulk sorting was unsuitable for the project whilst highlighting the pre-concentration technologies which were applicable (including particle sorting, and coarse particle gravity separation). The modelling methodology, equipment sizing and forward work plans developed to verify these alternative solutions are also presented, demonstrating the key factors contributing to a thorough scoping assessment.

Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

In the quest to access valuable critical minerals, humankind is expanding the frontier into extreme environments like space and deep-sea mining. These ambitious enterprises involve considerable costs and lengthy development cycles to ensure the robustness of mining systems in the face of the harshest conditions and unforeseen challenges. Unfortunately, obtaining information from these unexplored territories is complicated. Data is often scarce, incomplete or impossible to obtain until equipment is deployed, leaving engineers facing many uncertainties throughout the design, testing, production and preparation of such missions. Despite these challenges, these extreme environments operate under consistent physical and chemical principles that can be faithfully digitally replicated. However, unexplored areas and dynamic systems like weather and geology continue to carry uncertainties. While eliminating uncertainties remains elusive, Digital Twins offers a means of robust risk management tool. These virtual replicas can excel in simulating extreme conditions and unexpected events, helping optimise and validate mining system designs tailored for such hostile environments. This study takes inspiration from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover’s wheel damage rate to develop a Multiphysics Modelling and Virtual Motion Simulation (MMVMS) system. Using advanced Generative Design, this MMVMS system refines the MSL’s design, simulates component and system performance, and assesses the risk of premature damage while operating on Mars. Additionally, MMVMS integrates cutting-edge CAD design technologies from aerospace and manufacturing to realistically recreate the Martian environment and a detailed representation of MSL, allowing mobility verification and validation simulation to test different components in terms of materials, design, weight, power and, therefore, cost. The research highlights the precision of MMVMS in replicating extreme conditions, simulating and evaluating internal and external variables influencing the entire system (Rover) in real-time, and predicting movements, failures, and premature damage. This sophisticated Digital Twin technology, showcased in this research, holds promise not only for space missions but also to be adapted for terrestrial and deep-sea mining operations.

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

Mining and processing of pyrite ore at Iron Duke Mine, north east of Zimbabwe, generates large quantities of acidic mine water as a result of the oxidation of iron sulfides on exposure to air and water used in the drilling and blasting operations. The acid mine drainage (AMD) contains elevated levels of dissolved Fe, Al, Mn and sulfate and has characteristic pH values ranging from about 0.50 to 3.00. Handling and disposal of such a drainage places significant impacts on the economics of the mining operation due to the corrosive nature of the drainage on infrastructure, the limitations placed on water reuse and discharge to the environment under a new law governing effluent discharge. Treated sludge at Iron Duke is chemically unstable, changing pH from ~7 to ~3 within four days after deposition in the evaporation ponds. The effluent does not meet the permitted level of neutral pH, 500 mg/l sulfate and less than 2000 mg/l total dissolved solids. Excessive acid seepage from the evaporation ponds has resulted in contamination of the ground water below the ponds area, which shows high mean annual levels of iron (368.67 mg/l), sulfate (1702.89 mg/l) and low pH (2.86) in addition to other pollutants. This poor quality seepage infiltrates into the nearby Yellow Jacket River, contaminating the public water source. Furthermore, a deterioration of the land area and vegetation adjacent to the tailings dump is also observed. Understanding the controls on the neutralisation of acidic drainage and long-term sludge stability after placement in evaporation ponds is essential to minimise costs of closure requirements and for the protection of environment and human health. This study examined the effects of the master variables pH, redox potential, acidity and alkalinity on acid neutralisation. The results indicate that ferrous hydroxides are not as stable as ferric hydroxides and that proper oxidation of iron also leads to better sludge stability, higher treatment efficiency and a manageable sludge viscosity. Metal hydrolysis and secondary mineral formation at the evaporation ponds under a wide range of pH and redox conditions is responsible for equilibrium shifts in metal reactions, resulting in high potential for metal leaching and mobility. Mechanisms of metal attenuation are also discussed.

Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper.
