Chemical alteration of the compressive strength of sandstone has been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Successful development of this technology would offer an attractive alternative to the methods now used for stress control in mines. Sandstone cores were stressed to failure under uniaxial compression at two different strain rates. Specimens saturated with either distilled or tap water showed an average 14% reduction in stress at failure compared with those dried in vacuum. Samples saturated with dilute solutions of aluminum chloride, hydrochloric acid, and polyethylene oxide showed no statistically significant difference in failure stress compared with those saturated with water. By contrast, compressive strength of the cores was increased some 7% by saturation with the nonpolar solvent carbon tetrachloride. No correlation was found between zeta potential and compressive strength.

The ancient city of Guanajuato, the capital of the State of that name, has been built up and sustained chiefly by the milling industry based upon the veins of the Veta Madre and La Luz. It is distant about twelve hours, by rail, from the City of Mexico. Its elevation above the sea is about 6300 ft., and it has a salubrious climate. The population, at the date of my visit in 1891, was estimated at from 80,000 to 100,000 persons. The place is justly celebrated for the antiquity, depth and extent of the mines, the magnitude of the deep shafts, and the enormous total yield of the district in silver and gold, which is comparable with that of the Comstock Lode in the United States. Several important public institutions are located at this center. The State office for the records of claims and of the statistics of mining and production is known as the Deputacion de Mineria. The Mining College, with its fine collection of ores and minerals from the mines of the region, is highly interesting to mineralogists. A mint for the coinage of silver, but not of gold, coins from four to twelve millions of' silver dollars annually. The silver received at the mint is melted in an open-hearth furnace, and is ladled out and cast into long and thin bars, which are rolled down to the proper thickness for the blanks. The bars contain some gold which is not parted. There is an export of dore bars to Germany, amounting in value to from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 annually. There were, in 1891, upwards of forty reduction-works in and about the city where the silver ores were treated, chiefly by the ancient patio method. In these works were 65 Chilean mills, 301 arrastres of large size, and 936 of smaller dimensions. There were 36 steam engines, but mule-power was generally used at the ar-

A brief review of the silver industry is presented to set the stage for the analysis of the distribution of silver production by source from various types of mines in Canada and of the changing relationship between the total output of silver and the total output of base metals. The decline in the average grade of the Canadian mines is also discussed and a trend for the future is proposed. The report then examines in broader aspects the world primary silver production and concludes, in the section on outlook, that the effective supply in primary silver will grow at a rate significantly lower than the growth rate expected for base metals. A cumulative deficit of some 900 million ounces is projected for the period 1975-1980 and a further deficit of some 1,100 million ounces if projected for the 1980-to-1985 period.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) FOR years past I have traveled in quest of promising mining-properties, over almost impassable mountain-trails to remote places in the mining-regions, usually, many miles from an assay-office. If, upon examination, the formation and the ore-deposit appeared favorable, a quick determination of the value of my samples was necessary, in order that I might take intelligent action with reference to the acquisition of the property. A journey with my samples to civilized regions often meant weeks of delay, and perhaps loss of opportunity. How many, under similar circumstances, have returned with their assay-results from such a journey, only to find that some audacious speculator had " optioned" the property ! True, a first payment could have been made and the chances taken on the results; but experience has taught that rich-looking ore is not of necessity valuable. Personally, I would not hazard a ten-dollar bill on any property without first determining by assay the value of the ore. To carry the usual complete assay-paraphernalia over such mountain-trails was impracticable by reason of the loss of time involved, the great expense of transportation (charged according to weight), and the fact that a few such trips would almost certainly wreck the outfit. For these reasons I began a process of elimination and substitution which finally enabled me to carry, in an ordinary 26-in. valise, sufficient apparatus and supplies for, say, 100 assays of adequate commercial accuracy. Components of bulk explosive products include ammonium nitrate, water, fuel, stabilizers, and calcium nitrate. The physical attributes include prill/emulsion ratio, density, and viscosity and in the case of prilled ammonium nitrate, hardness, size distribution and fuel oil absorption. These components and attributes in conjunction with ground conditions determine all aspects of explosive performance including the risk of fume. This paper presents a fume risk assessment matrix of explosives components and physical attributes as a function of a simple description of ground conditions. Instrumentation to provide a measure of the quality of the explosive product are also described and these include both “on bench” physical measurements and laboratory analysis. “On bench” methods include “in hole “density, velocity of detonation (VOD), detonation pressure and detonation temperature. Part of the quality control process involves a mobile laboratory unit which at this stage can provide measurements of water content, ammonium nitrate content, calcium nitrate content, fuel content, prill characteristics and prill/emulsion ratio. This unit can be taken to sites to enable the testing of bulk and sensitized products at site rather than after transportation.

Y.: If I may judge from the half-tone illustration engraved from a photograph of this medal and accompanying Dr. Prazer's paper, I do not think the cast ing is exceptionally fine. I have often made castings of simi lar character which I think were equally good. For instance, I have taken a coin, moulded it directly in fine sand, and cast from it in Scotch (or the equally good, if not better, Ameri can Scotch ") foundry-iron a copy quite as sharp and smooth as the original. The secret is in using very fine sifted sand. In fact, I have used for this purpose the dust which had accumulated on the beams overhead in my foundry, riddling it with a very fine sieve before using it. ['NOTE BY THE SECRETARY.—After the session at which these remarks were made by him, Mr. Garretson cast at his Buffalo foundry, in the presence of a number of members of the Institute, copies of the bronze pin furnished to visiting members by the Local Committee of the Buffalo meeting. The accom panying illustration, Fig. I, has been reproduced from a photograph of such a casting, made in green sand, under the conditions of ordinary foundry-practice, and not subsequently polished in any .way. I can also certify that the photo graphic negative was not touched, to improve its clearness of definition, before the production of the " half-tone" plate from which Fig. 1 has been printed. As, in the case of the Kytchtym medal, it was the thin, ribbon-like sprue, rather than the low-relief features of the medal itself, which indicated the fluidity of the metal and the sharpness of the casting, so in this work of Mr. Garretson it is the long and slender pin which offers the strongest evidence of these qualities. It is scarcely neccssary to point out that the filling in the mould of a long and nar row opening, such as this pin presents, is the severest test that could be imposed upon the casting, and that the sharpness of the point of the pin in the casting is striking evidence of the success with which this test has been met. The Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory .has made for the American Manufacturer measurements of this casting and an analysis of the sprue. The thickness of the main casting is from 0.049 to 0.068 inch. That of the tag bearing the stamped number is 0.024 inch. The analysis, which represents the iron ordinarily employed by Mr. Garretson for thin castings, is as follows :

In the stretch-bend or bending-under-tension test, a strip is rigidly clamped and restrained at each end and bent by central transverse loading using a radiused punch: The strip deflection at failure has been used as a measure of formability for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels by other investigators. In this work, a detailed study is made of strains developing during stretch bending of an 80,000-lbf/ in 2 (552 MPa) yield stress steel using different punch radii. It is shown that toward the end of the process, the bending strains at both the inner and outer surfaces are tensile and suddenly increase at a rapid and approximately equal rate. The strain ratio in the failure region departs significantly from plane strain , even using a large width-to-thickness ratio of about 10. The effective fracture strains appear to be independent of bend ratio (punch radius/thickness) and significantly below the fracture s train in simple tension. Metallographic and tensile data were obtained for the subject material and, for one bend ratio, the effects on stretch-bend parameters of annealing both on this material and a. carbon steel were compared.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. The commercial availability of electrolytic manganese has greatly changed the position of manganese as a nonferrous alloying metal. Manganese metal commercially available up to about ten years ago was reduced with either silicon or aluminum and contained substantial amounts of the oxides of these metals and other impurities. Manganese was accordingly not available as an alloy base and its addition to copper-base and nickel-base alloys was generally limited to a manganese content of a few per cent. Several special alloys like manganin contained up to 12 pct of manganese.

The production of oil and gas in Arkansas is confined to two distinct and widely separated regions of the state; namely: (1) South Arkansas in the Gulf coastal plain, where 49 fields-many containing two or more reservoirs or pools-yield oil, condensate and gas from beds in the Cretaceous and Jurassic, and (2) Northwest Arkansas, a part of the Arkansas Valley, where only dry gas is produced in 21 fields from sandstones of Pennsylvanian age. Exploration during the year 1945 centered largely in these two producing regions, but some of the geophysical surveys were made and wildcat drilling was done a considerable distance outside these regions.

Studies were made on the projectile impact sensitivity of explosives by subjecting explosive samples to the impact of metal projectiles fired from a 0.50- caliber gun . The projectiles , in the form of right cylinders , made plane surface to plane surface contact with the explosives . Pressures in the explosive were investigated with an expendable pressure transducer in some instances . The physical model of the projectile - explosive interaction describes , in principle , the duration of the peak shock pressure in terms of the projectile and explosive geometry and the steady- state penetration of the explosive . Of the explosives studied , liquid hydrogen- solid oxygen and liquid oxygen - solid or liquid hydrocarbon fuel were the most shock sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of about 1.0 kb or 987 atmospheres pressure ) ; cast TNT was the least sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of more than 110 kb pressure ) . Measurements of pressure in the explosive showed some moderate space resolution by the transducer and gave pressure distributions in agreement with expectations from the model of the shock processes . The appearance of the recovered projectiles and the calculated initiation shock pressures suggest that the solid explosives were initiated directly to high- order detonation , whereas the liquid explosives were probably initiated to low- order detonation-- with a subsequent , later transition to high- order detonation .

This paper develops the themes explored by the authors at the Fourth International Platinum Conference,. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: > An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated > An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter, and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets > An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated > An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the owner's team.

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels - from mining and processing to the manufacturing of finished products. In 2010, the estimated real GDP of the United States increased by 2.8 percent compared with 2009 and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.6 trillion (Table 1).Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often rejected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the construction industry during 2010 were rejected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, which are used almost exclusively in construction. Performances in other sectors were mixed and less easily characterized. Recovery from the economic decline of 2008-2009 became apparent in 2010, as prices for many mineral commodities continued to rise with increasing demand for those materials or the products in which they are found.
