During a research program to develop improved methods for recovering elemental sulfur and useful sulfur compounds from secondary source materials, the technical literature was searched for pertinent articles on processing methods. This report summarizes results of the literature survey and describes the more important processes that have been used or suggested for recovering sulfur and sulfur compounds from all non-Frasch sources. The bibliography presented represents a survey of the available English language literature on the subject through 1958, with particular attention focused on the period 1950 through 1958. Engineering Index and Industrial Arts Index were the principal guides used in the survey of this period. Chemical Abstracts was used to a limited extent to identify a few key foreign articles and patents. The Sulfur Symposium (4)4 published in November 1950 by Industrial and Engineering Chemistry includes a broadly representative selection of the literature up to 1949. Therefore, this reference was used extensively to locate and list pertinent articles on processing methods reported in the period prior to 1950.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is responsible for slopes along the Kaministiquia River, one of the largest tributaries to Lake Superior in Canada. After arresting toe erosion for a mile of riverbank, the remainder of the slope required stabilization to stop further crest regression and to protect the houses, street and services at the top. Stabilization of the 100 ft. high slope was tendered as design-build with a target safety factor of 1.3 and a design life of 75 years. The successful bid was a system of 1.4 inch diameter soil nails up to 40 feet long, installed perpendicular to the slope on a 3 to 5 foot grid. The conventional shotcrete facing was replaced with a ?green? biotechnical facing and special transverse plate heads on the nails. The key to keeping costs low proved to be installation with light equipment working on the slope, and driving the nails without drilling or grouting. Rather than tension, the design was based on bending in the nails, similar to a laterally loaded flexible pile. The paper describes the design and installation of this innovative system. The design is discussed in terms of soil properties, nail resistance as it varies with depth, failure modes, corrosion protection, root design and nail head design. Construction challenges are discussed. The system is compared to an adjacent anchored soldier pile wall built along the same slope 20 years ago. Post construction monitoring results confirm predicted performance.

Analysis of 62 samples show that the sulphides throughout the igneous stratigraphy have a magmatic signature, with the exception of the uppermost gabbros and the lowermost basal thrust talc-carbonate lithologies. Mean delta-34S values for whole-rock samples from harzburgites, dunite pods in harzburgite, crustal dunites and wehrlites, the main and high-level pyroxenites and gabbros suggest that the primary sulphides derived their sulphur from a magmatic source enriched in 34S. This finding is compatible with the proposed origin of the ophiolite above a subduction zone. Values for pyrite mineralisation in the uppermost part of the gabbros are thought to result from precipitation from a seawater-derived fluid, while isotopically light sulphur in the basal thrust could have been introduced from underlying metasediments. The replacement of pentlandite by heazlewoodite has not led to sulphur fractionation

"Preg-robbing has been known for many years, where increased losses are suffered because dissolved gold is removed from solution by adsorption onto carbonaceous matter. In direct cyanidation circuits it is reasonable to conclude that the preg-robbed gold is either in a gold cyanide [Au(CN) - 2, AuCN] or metallic [Au°] form. However, in circuits with a pre-oxidation step possibilities increase and multiply even further because of water recycle streams containing apparent and not-so-apparent gold ligands. It is in these circuits where speciation of sorbed gold, i.e. the identification of the gold compound, is useful. The importance arises from the fact that proper identification of the sorbed gold species can be used to determine how, when, where and why gold was removed from solution, thereby identifying the exact cause of the problem and providing clues as to how it may be rectified.INTRODUCTIONTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt ever to speciate gold preg-robbed by carbonaceous matter using a surface sensitive microbeam technique. This approach enables the direct determination of gold species sorbed on carbonaceous particulates, opening an entirely new field in the understanding of the chemistry of gold sorption on carbon. The reasoning behind this effort was to add to the current knowledge of the detrimental effect chloride ions have on gold recovery by the pressure oxidation and in particular why in the ensuing CIL step, gold is not being desorbed from the surface of the carbonaceous particles (Table 1)."

The Paracatu Expansion Project III in Brazil was implemented between 2006 and 2008 to increase the existing capacity from 20 to 61 Million tons per year of gold ore treatment. This expansion led the Brazilian subsidiary of the Canadian Kinross Gold Corporation to become the single largest gold producer in Brazil and the largest single gold concentrator in the world, with a nominal capacity to treat around 167,000 tons per day of ore. This paper describes the Project Development areas for the Paracatu Expansion, using the approach proposed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the methodology included in the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge). The author has more than 20 years of experience in the gold mining industry, having worked as a plant metallurgist, mill superintendent and development manager for RPM until he took the position as the Project Manager of the Paracatu Expansion III in 2005. Luis Tondo has a BSc in Mining Engineering from UFRGS-Brazil, an MScEng from the University of Queensland - Australia and an MBA degree from FDC-Brazil. Luis is currently based in Santiago-Chile, acting as the Project Director for developing projects in Latin America for the Kinross Gold Corporation.

Keywords: Low-Grade Dolomite, Low CaO Content, High Specific Surface Area, MgO. A low energy consumption preparation technology of magnesium oxide with low calcium oxide content and high specific surface area from low-grade dolomite has been investigated. The optimum technical conditions for the preparation of magnesium oxide are the followings: dolomite is partially calcined at 750-800° for 2 h; the optimum solid-liquid ratio range in calcined dolomite slurry is 20-30 g?l?1; carbonation temperature, carbon dioxide pressure and end point pH value of carbonation are less than 40°, 0.4-0.6 MPa and 7 respectively during carbonation process; decomposition temperature of Mg(HCO3)2 solution is near 100°; calcination temperature of the precursor (i.e. precipitated basic magnesium carbonate) is less than 850°. More than 90% of magnesium can be extracted by the technology. The MgO product (CaO < 0.38%) with a specific surface area of near 50 m2?g?1 also can be obtained by the technology.

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 2005 at a record $758 million (21 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 2005 include salts (halite, potash, and magnesium salts), Portland cement, sand and gravel, carbonates (lime, limestone, and dolomite), phosphate, crushed stone, clays, lightweight aggregate (expanded shale and perlite), gypsum, silica, sulfur and sulfuric acid, and building stone. Commodities produced in smaller amounts include diatomite, pumice, gemstones, ornamental stone, fluorspar, and mineral and fossil specimens. Utah is in a period of rapid growth in industrial rock and mineral production; however, some commodities have grown faster than others. The robust western economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, Portland cement raw materials, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants

The biggest Port of Latin America - the Santos Port in São Paulo, Brazil - has been drilled and blasted by controlled underwater techniques in order to remove around 40,000 m3 (52,318 cubic yard) of rock divided in two outcrop rocks: Teffé and Itapema. Underwater pumped explosive, in combination with small cartridges areas, was successfully used in order to reach a target depth of -15m (-49 ft) and a width of 220m (722 ft) in the navigation channel. It was the first time that a pumped explosive was used in underwater blasting in Brazil and it represents a historic benchmark for projects of this kind in this country. The main challenges faced in this project include the control of the ground vibration, due to the necessity to carry out detonations 40m (131 ft) away from the quay wall - where the passenger terminal and the 80 year-old warehouse were located – and the rush schedule available, in order to finish the underwater drilling and blasting phase before the coming cruise season. Therefore, the perfect combination of an ideal pumped product with an effective pumping system has permitted to carry out the project in a record of less time than 3 months (against to the original expected time of 18 months), with all vibration events under control as result of the special ground vibration program carried out.

Vehicle vibration exposure has been linked to chronic back pain and low back symptoms among agricultural tractor drivers. The objectives of this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were to assess driver whole body vibration (WBV) exposures and recommend interventions to reduce the risk of back related injuries, particularly relative to vehicle jarring/jolting (the transient mechanical shock components of WBV). The methodology included collecting, from two independent samples, ?eld data and health and work history data of farm equipment operators. Data were collected during mowing, raking, baling, chiseling, tilling, and road travel for different model tractors. Spraying using a sprayer and shrub removal with a skid steer loader were also included. Based on ISO 2631 (1985), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, threshold limit values, presents 0.5 m/s2 as the action level recommended by the Commission of European Communities for overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum for axes x, y, and z) [ACGIH, 2006. Threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. Cincinnati, OH]. WBV measured at the operator/seat interface exceeded this action level. The roughest rides and highest vector sum accelerations occurred with small utility tractor mowers (3.3 and 2.8 m/s2) and a skid steer loader (1.7 m/s2). Major ?ndings from health and work history data showed 96% of participants reported having to bend or twist their necks, although 24% reported neck symptoms. Sixty four percent of participating operators reported experiencing back symptoms (e.g., pain, aching, stiffness, etc.). Recommendations included: specifying a seat that ??better?? isolates operators from jars/jolts with new tractor purchases; maintaining the seat/seat suspension and replacing worn or damaged cushions with NIOSH tested viscoelastic foam padding; using larger diameter tires with radial ply instead of bias ply construction, particularly on small utility tractor mowers, to aid in attenuating ride ??roughness??; using a swivel seat to reduce the stress on the neck from bending or twisting; and improving efforts to educate owner/operators of the adverse effects of WBV exposures. Since the data presented in this paper were collected from two independent samples, the authors were unable to draw any correlations or etiological inferences from the study. However, results were compared and contrasted with other studies which included similar vibration measurements in agriculture.

The value of mineral production in Alabama increased 1 percent above the record high set in 1965. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite, third in the production of masonry cement, native asphalt, and scrap mica, sixth in the production of portland cement, ninth in the production of iron ore, and tenth in the production of lime. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and stone, the manufacturing of cement, and the production of crude petroleum. These industries accounted for 87 percent of the State&apos;s total value of mineral production, compared with 85 percent in 1965.

A near-record crowd of mining history enthusiasts made the trip to Leadville, CO in September to attend the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum’s 19th induction banquet. Dressed in Victorian garb, black tie tuxedos and formal gowns, the 268 people honored four distinguished men who made a lasting impact on the U.S. mining industry. They joined 188 other inductees. The first induction banquet took place in 1988, with about 500 people attending.

Unrelieved residual strains can influence the states of stress in rock masses. If cheap, stable structures are to be constructed in Tock in which large pressures are exterted by unrelieved residual strains, the pressures must be either utilized or neutralized. A photoelastic technique has been used to show that the release of residual strains in rocks is influenced by the mechanical properties of anisotropic rock fabrics. The relationships between directions of residual strain release and the attitudes of minor geological structures have been determined. For engineering design purposes it is possible to estimate the principal stress directions in rock containing unrelieved residual strains if the attitudes of such minor geological structures as foliation planes, lineations, and joints are known.INTRODUCTIONQuarry workers have long been aware that near-surface rocks may be highly stressed. In many cases the stresses are too large to be the result of gravitational loads. Dale (1923, pp. 34-35) gives many instances of deformation produced by the violent release of residual strains in quarry rocks. Coates (1963) has described powerful rock bursts and cases of rock deformation underground implying the existence of much larger stresses than are likely to result from present-day gravitational loads. The only explanation is that pressures of up to several thousands of pounds per square inch may be caused by unrelieved residual strains in rock.Instruments have been developed for measuring states of stress in rock masses. The Canadian non-ferrous mining and metallurgical industry has made great strides in environmental protection during the past half century. The path taken by the copper-nickel smelting industry in reaching today’s level is traced in this paper. Following the practice at early copper smelters in Wales and in the US, Canadian smelters originally used tall stacks to disperse furnace of-gases. This was the normal mode of operation and was accepted by society and by Government. Gradually, Government regulations required fixation of sulphur dioxide emissions and Canadian companies responded with significant technical developments to achieve this result. The initial development in Canada of the first new technologies such as the Cominco Flash Suspension Roaster and the Freeman Flash Smelting Process - both representing early versions of the modern established flash smelting technologies - and then later technologies such as the Inco Flash Smelting Process and the Noranda Process, both of which continue to this day, are discussed in this paper in terms of their contributions to the development of environmentally friendly plants. The evolution of these and other technologies is also discussed. Some comments regarding how the industry will face the future are also included.

Abstract - Ore reserve estimation, based on sparse drill hole data, was conducted for a placer gold property in Nome, Alaska. A problem with sparse data is that random subdivision of the data into modelling and evaluation subsets (as is commonly done) becomes a problem, as random selection may result in biased/skewed subsets. Therefore, a technique that combined data segmentation with genetic algorithms (GA) was applied to divide the samples into three equivalent subsets: training, validation and testing. Data segmentation was done on the basis of the distribution of gold values. Neural network and a variety of kriging techniques were used to estimate gold grades. A multi-layer feed forward neural network along with "early/quick stop" training was used for neural network modelling. A comparative evaluation of kriging and neural network methods was then performed. The results revealed that neural network was generally superior to the kriging techniques for gold grade estimation in the Nome deposit.

This paper explores the age-old concept of mine-mill reconciliation from a new perspective. Advances in reconciliation processes have been slow to materialize because in the quest for “rightness”, engineers, geologists and metallurgists have become entrenched in their viewpoints, dutifully performing to the metrics and expectations imposed upon them by the siloed organization. Moreover, reconciliation has not been viewed as a primary value creator, but an accounting non-value added task. In reality, the knowledge from reconciliation can significantly enhance yields. Critical review of the direct variables (tons, grade, etc.) and other less-obvious variables (incentives, communication, etc.) reveal a complex web of barriers to be cleared by management in order to realize benefits. Also, mineralogical reconciliation methods may offer renewed faith in the process.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November. 191(j.) I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION. 1. Historical. ALLUVIAL gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river; by Paulino, a Brazilian convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, Cirubé, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Tat, and Couriége. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysée, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about $5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary between the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company,, the Dutch Guiana French Mining Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. The Annual Business Meeting of the members of The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute held during he 84th Regular Meeting of the Institute was called to order by the president, H. Dean Jacot at 11:30 a.m Tuesday, June 28. 1988 in Peak Room 5 of Beaver Run Resort at Breckenridge, Colorado. Twenty three were present and a quorum was established. The president stated the purpose of the annual meeting is to inform members of the status of the affairs and activities of the corporation during the year. It was moved by Loren Linville, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of the previous meeting as published in the 1987 Proceedings. The chair called for reports of the various com¬mittees and these reports will he placed on file in the RMCMI office. Bylaws and Resolutions. Chairman Loren V. Linville reported there were no bylaws revisions. He further reported that the Board had adopted two resolutions: (I) Noting the passing of members since the last convention-Richard T. Brownrigg. Don A Dewey, John T. Maulshy. Hugh D. Nyquist and Mike Zakotnik. (2) Recognizing the superior skills of J. Brett Harvey. RMCMI Vice President of Utah. For recruiting 26 new members from the State of Utah and named him as #1 Recruiter in the Institute?s 1988 membership drive. Linville further commended the Executive Secretary officers, chairmen and committees loran excellent job in planning the 84th Regular Meeting and convention. Membership. In the absence of chairman Ed Sullivan. the secretary reported there are currently 718 active or dues paying members, 51 Life Members and 250 delinquent in dues payment. In the 1988 membership drive. 132 new members have been recruited and 74 of them attended this convention making up 27V, of the total attendance. Patrons of the Institute. This report was given by the secretary for chairman Ira McKeever. A total of 124 plaques has been prepared during the low year life of the program. It has been culled to 119 possible donors as some firms have gone out of business or consolidated. Of this number 46 renewed their annual $100 donation and three new Patrons have joined prior to the convention for a total of 49. During the convention. four new Patrons donated $100 each. tour former Patrons pledged $100 each and seven would be-new Patrons pledged $100 each for a total of 15. This would bring the grand total to 64 if all pledges are received prior to the close of this fiscal year as opposed to 59 renewals in 1987. Program. Co-Chairman Pete Nielsen announced the convention program theme "Broadening OUR Horizons" was well received despite the loss of three speakers during the final days prior to convention. Because the remarks of the Monday luncheon keynote speaker ran over the first time-to-be-tried Monday afternoon Poster Session was delayed almost an hour in beginning. This well thought out feature will he run again next year but in a different time frame. Nielsen thanked his co-chairmen, Bill Balaz and the Poster Session chairman Marcie Greenberg. Publicity. Chairman Tom Egan reported three newsletters including the convention newspaper were sent members during the year. He and Bob Jacob of Bob Jacob Public Relations were at registration daily to secure business card ads and to solicit advertising for the Proceedings. Scholarship. Chairman Keith McGinnis reported that six of the seven scholarship recipients were present at the convention. The University of Arizona at Tucson was added this year and it was the only university visited this year by the chairman. Each scholarship recipient was introduced to the membership at the Monday morning Welcome Session, presented a plaque and responded. The input Iron each winner was most favorable to the program. Each was appreciative of the many contacts made and the educational seminars and programs. McGinnis noted that the mining engineering department at the University of Wyoming may be dropped during the coming year. Joe Dunlap suggested that every member rally support of this department. Coal, fly ash, and flue gas samples were analyzed for mercury (Hg) by double gold amalgamation-flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The purpose of the study was to elucidate the fate of the trace mercury in the coal when the coal is burned. Samples were collected from a bench-scale 100-g/hr combustor, a 500-lb/hr combustor, and three coal-burning powerplants. In all cases mercury was found in the fly ash. The amounts ranged from about 9 to about 70 percent of the mercury in the coal that was burned.
