6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. Due to the relatively remote location of the St. Anthony Mine, the high cost of transportation and milling, plus the low grade nature of the deposit, the United Nuclear Corporation began investigating methods of mechanical upgrading approximately eighteen moths ago. This investigation culminated in the installation of Model 17 and Model 18 ore sorting machines. The machines are marketed in the United States and Canada by Ore Sorters of Canada (Ltd.). The installation of this advanced technology will enable United Nuclear Corporation to fully realize the residual potential of St. Anthony.

An effective elution technique has been developed for recovering uranium from ion exchange resins loaded in the carbonate leaching process. The procedure employs direct elution with acid. In comparison with conventional base elution, the procedure yields eluate of higher uranium concentration, results in a more complete elution, keeps the performance of the ion exchange resin at the fresh stage, reduces acid consumption, eliminates carbonate consumption and reduces waste for disposal. The technique has been successfully demonstrated in the field and patented. It lends itself to commercialization.

INTRODUCTION Sublevel mining is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of the blasted ore and the caved overlying waste rock mass. As with any other mining method, sublevel caving has advantages and dis¬advantages which must be carefully considered and evaluated. The major advantages of sublevel caving are dis¬cussed as follows: Because all of the mining activities are executed in or from relatively small openings, sublevel caving is one of the safest mining methods. Drifts, which are the pri¬mary working places, are distributed in a uniform pat¬tern on all levels. Normally the maximum dimensions of the sublevel drifts are about 5 m wide and 3.7 m high. The transportation drifts can have the same section, or the height may be increased to about 4.5 m when trucks are loaded in the transport drifts. The stability and safety of such drifts in competent rock can be easily controlled by smooth blasting or by a combination of smooth blasting with shotcreting. In less competent rock masses, stability can be achieved by combined reinforc¬ing, for example, by a combination of smooth blasting, shotcreting, and rockbolting. The major mining activities can be broken down into three groups: drifting and reinforcing; ore fragmenta¬tion, i.e., production drilling and blasting; and ore draw¬ing, loading, and transportation, and all are relatively simple. Because of the repetitive nature of the mining system, one can standardize almost completely all min¬ing activities. This means that a high degree of work efficiency can be achieved. Because the components of mining production in sublevel caving can be standardized, a high degree of mechanization is possible. In modern sublevel caving the sections of drifts and tunnels are sufficiently large to allow the introduction of large trackless mining equip¬ment. The advantages of a trackless system can be then broadly utilized not only for direct mining but also for all services, including the transportation of mining per¬sonnel to the working place. The flexibility of mining is very good. Standardiza¬tion and specialization of mining activities and equip¬ment on separate levels (lower level or levels in de¬velopment, upper level or levels in production mining) together with the trackless system yield a high degree of flexibility. This allows a rapid start-up of mining and good flexibility in making production rate changes. The method lends itself to good work concentration, organization, and working conditions. Normally, on the lower levels, various phases of development are under¬way. Upper levels are in various stages of extraction. Therefore the work can be easily organized into a sys¬tem which excludes interference between mining activi¬ties. Safety of mining (in small dimension openings), good work organization, high mechanization using large modern mining equipment, etc., comprise very good working conditions. Naturally such a system enables a high work concentration and rationalization of separate specialized mining activities and therefore mining by sublevel caving can be effective and relatively in¬expensive. The major disadvantages of sublevel caving, on the other hand, are: There is a relatively high dilution of the ore by caved waste. Various types of ore loss can occur. When the ex¬traction limit (that point yielding the maximum accept¬able amount of dilution) is reached, the remaining highly diluted ore represents an ore loss. Some ore is lost in passive zones located on the level of extraction between the active zones of the gravity flow. Part of the ore from these passive zones can be recovered together with ore extraction on the lower sublevel, but some un¬diluted and often not fragmented ore located in passive zones above the plane of the footwall is lost. In gen¬eral, these losses are larger as the inclination of the ore body and the footwall is reduced. A relatively large amount of development is re¬quired. This includes transport drifts, usually located in the footwall waste rock on each sublevel, and sub¬level drifts, which connect the active mining areas to the transport drifts and as a result are partially in ore and partially in the waste rock of the footwall. The waste rock length increases as the inclination of the ore body and footwall decreases. It also includes orepasses, used for transport of the ore or waste from the separate sublevels downward to the main haulage level, and normally driven in waste; and inclined drifts or tunnels, which provide a connection for the trackless equipment between the main haulage level and the separate sublevels and are driven in waste. Finally there is the de¬struction of the surface through subsidence. To maximize the ore recovery, minimize the dilu¬tion, and achieve a high efficiency of mining by sub¬level caving, good data regarding the gravity flow pa¬rameters for the blasted ore and the caved waste are of utmost importance. The exact type and amount of data required depend upon the purpose and needs of the study. For the first feasibility study, it may be sufficient to utilize the data from other sublevel caving operations with similar conditions and circumstances. For any higher level of mine planning it is clear that more exact data, including analytical and experimental analyses up to full-scale in-situ testing, are necessary. Basic gravity flow principles and design guidelines for the application of the sublevel caving mining method are presented in the following sections. Although some¬what simplified, they should provide a basis for mine planning and operation. The gravity flow principles described can be effectively applied to other mining situations, with some modification. Also, steep dipping coal seams can be effectively mined by modified sub¬level caving.

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. High costs--and high risks--are normal in coal exploration and mine development. But risks and ultimate costs are minimized by foreknowledge of prospective coal seams and adjacent formations. Extensive drill hole programs are often used to obtain needed information. Cores and cuttings from these holes are used to determine coal location, thickness, and quality; they are also used to study physical and geological characteristics of surrounding beds. Valuable as these core and cuttings studies are, their effectiveness is often diminished by loss of recovery or by incomplete analysis. Needed is an effective and economical method for augmenting these studies. Well logs provide information of the type needed for efficient cool prospecting. Furthermore, obtaining these logs in drill holes, and evaluating the data they provide, is both fast and economical. To investigate the usefulness of well logging methods in coal explorations, the authors worked with Mr. Jon Jenkins of Truax Truer Coal Company. Logs were run in a number of drill holes in various areas of the Illinois Basin; these areas provided variety both in coal quality and geologic conditions. The data were studied extensively using computer methods similar to those now used in the evaluation of oil and gas wells. (2, 3) This study was used to produce a computer-generated analysis designed especially for mining problems.

This is a description of the efforts of a research project intended to demonstrate methods of alleviating pollution from coal mine refuse piles and slurry lagoons. These are mainly derelict barren sites. Some are burning and some are vulnerable to wind erosion which causes air pollution. Some occupy valuable land near metropolitan areas. They are an integral part of the landscape of the Appalachian and Midwestern Coal Fields. They are important in the light of growing civic awareness of the great general problem of waste disposal and environmental improvement. In the V-shaped valleys of the Pocahontas Region, they continue to be piled higher and higher. In flatter topography, they tend to form broad, flat ridges. Some contain more metal forms than others and some have a minimum of metal, but weather to a fine talc, which chokes streams with a fine particle suspension. Most are burning or have burned, but burning or weathering, most all are sources of pollution to the atmosphere and to adjacent waterways. This demonstration project is being carried out at an abandoned mine near the town of Du Quoin in southern Illinois. It is jointly sponsored by the Truax-Traer Division of Consolidation Coal Company and by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration of the Department of the Interior. The site area is a refuse pile and slurry lagoon, each of fifty acres. It is hoped that basic data from this study will be generally applicable to other sites and will provide a basis for rational and efficient engineering design of future reclamation projects. Most refuse piles have extremely long term capabilities to produce highly potent acidogenic oxidation products typifying the more serious aspects of acid mine drainage contamination. Numerous sites remain where the abandoned mine no longer discharges acid waters, but its associated refuse pile continues to generate significant quantities of acid and other oxidation products even after many years.

The problem of fine coal slimes has been addressed in a unique way at A. T. Massey Coal?Company. Several plants have employed two-stage classifying cyclones to separate the minus 1 mm raw coal into 3 sizes. Larger cyclones make the initial cut at approximately 150 µ (100?mesh) sending the underflow to a cleaning circuit (usually spirals) while the overflow is pumped to a secondary cyclone circuit using smaller cyclones. The small cyclones make a cut at near 70 µ (200 mesh) and produce an underflow that is a des limed flotation feed. The overflow is discarded to refuse due to its high ash and superfine size which would produce a high moisture product even if suitably recovered.

If you don't know a gauss from a grasshopper, you may be better off than you, think, particularly if you're an ore dressing engineer charged with the responsibility of selecting magnetic equipment for minerals separation and beneficiation. Gauss is a unit of measure for a magnetic field. It indicates the number of imaginary lines of force per square centimeter or per square inch radiating from a magnet. In discussing the strength characteristics of a magnet, we have come to speak of a magnetic field of 800 gauss, for example, meaning 800 lines of force per square centimeter. Gauss became the standard for selecting drum type separators many years ago under an arbitrary set of circumstances. The standard has continued to this day even though magnetics applications engineers have long considered it inadequate. The configurations of the older gauss meter were such that the most accurate and convenient readings on a drum type separator could be made at distances greater than one inch. So, an arbitrary distance of two inches was established and that two inches became the standard. Since then, it has become commonplace to specify magnetic strengths for drum separators according to average gauss readings at two inches; for example 500 gauss average at two inches, 750 gauss average at two inches and so on, even though gauss readings at two inches have much less to do with the separating and beneficiating function of a given application than was formerly believed. The standard was adopted as a means of gauging the strengths of electromagnetic drum type separators, for they were the only ones around at the time. These machines were usually designed with no magnetic considerations other than that the material to be separated should be agitated vigorously and the magnetic fields should be deep and strong. Drums built this way performed well enough, so it seemed logical to measure their magnetic strengths. Hence, gauss at two inches. Now, new improvements in magnetic techniques have made average gauss measurements at 2 inches positively obsolete.

This paper is concerned primarily with the kaolin deposits extending northwestward from Macon, Ga., which is in the western part of the Irwinton district (fig. 1). These deposits are in a belt of kaolin districts extending along the inner edge of the Coastal Plain from the Aiken district, S. C., southwestward to the vicinity of Macon, a distance of 150 miles (250 km). Large kaolin deposits associated with bauxite also occur in an extension of this belt southwestward from Macon as far as the Eufaula district, Ala., a distance of about 130 miles (208 km). The belt splits away from the inner edge of the Coastal Plain in a southwesterly direction from Macon; the Eufaula district is approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of the contact of Coastal Plain sedimentary rocks with much older crystalline rocks. Structure The strata of Cretaceous and Tertiary age containing the kaolin deposits all dip gently seaward irom the landward edge of the sedimentary rocks. The dip of the Cretaceous strata is about 25 feet per mile (4.9 m per km). The dip of Tertiary strata is about 15 feet per mile (2.1 m per km). In places, the Tertiary strata overlap the older sedimentary beds and rest directly on the crystalline rocks. Faults having a few feet of displacement have been observed in several mines, but no major faulting is known in the area.

Deep gas and oil production has been substantially increased over prolonged periods through the use of sintered bauxite propping agents. Since its inception in 1976, over 170,000,000 pounds of high strength ceramic proppants have been employed. Recent field evaluations and economic analysis demonstrate the superiority of sintered bauxite proppant over quartz sand. This paper describes the development, application, field results, and product evolution of sintered bauxite.

The most common method used for cleaning the fine fraction in today's coal preparation plants is froth flotation. Past research and practice has found that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, its efficiency decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases due to the flotation of high-ash particles having a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the coal surface. Since gravity-based processes are much more efficient at treating middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine coal cleaning has been studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine circuit feed. Results will be shown from a parametric study using a Falcon centrifugal concentrator which reveals that the separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content, and feed rate.

Column experiments were performed to determine the ability of Madison aquifer material to adsorb arsenic and other constituents in a heavily mined watershed of the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The Madison aquifer is a karstic dolomite and limestone reservoir that is exposed on the flanks of the Black Hills. Streams that cross the Madison in the eastern Black Hills typically lose all their flow to the aquifer at sinkholes. In this work, Madison aquifer material was obtained for loading of six-inch diameter columns, which were backfilled with Madison aquifer water. Stream water then was allowed to displace the aquifer water during column testing in order to simulate mixing of the two waters at sinkholes and to determined adsorption of arsenic and other dissolved constituents. Initial results show that some adsorption of arsenic occurred when compared to more conservative tracers such as nitrate.

"An innovative method to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) and sediment loading of a recreational lake was used in the Red River watershed in northern New Mexico. The Red River drains a mining district that contains multiple naturally occurring hydrothermal alteration zones that release ARD and sediment to the river during episodic summer rain storms. A lake is near the mouth of the watershed and is filled with water from the river through a sluice gate and diversion. An automated actuator was installed on the sluice gate to close when the river is impacted by high-suspended sediment. Water quality probes were installed at the sluice gate to monitor the river water for turbidity, specific conductivity and water depth. If high turbidity is measured, the sluice gate closes automatically. Remote access is setup with a computer view screen to review the real-time system status. Once the turbidity drops below a threshold, the sluice gate is reopened remotely. The automated sluice gate has successfully reduced the amount of ARD and suspended sediment entering the lake. This reduction has resulted in an improved aquatic habitat for the fishery and benthic macroinvertebrate community. BACKGROUND The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. The river drains an area of approximately 190 square miles and spans elevations from 6,600 feet at its confluence with the Rio Grande to its headwaters near 12,000 feet (Figure 1). The river generally flows to the west along most if its length.The Red River watershed includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. The alteration zones were created by intrusion of high-silica granites and subvolcanic porphyries, with associated hydrothermal fluids, into the volcanic rocks of the Questa Caldera. The hydrothermal alteration is also responsible for the molybdenum deposits in the area. Rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks has resulted in the formation of alteration scars. The alteration scars are characterized by steep, erodible slopes with little vegetation and incised gullies. Debris fans from the drainages containing active alteration scars have formed and typically consist of poorly sorted sand and gravel that is distinctly pale yellow in color. Some of the more prominent scars are located in the Hansen, Straight and Hottentot Creek drainages downstream of the town of Red River."

Mining is one of world's oldest industries. Its rich history continues into modern times. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in southeastern New Mexico is writing the next chapter in mining history. In fact, WIPP technology is the key to closure of the nuclear cycle with the disposal of nuclear waste in a deep geological repository. It might seem odd that the age-old institution of mining would be linked to the problem of nuclear waste disposal. In fact, the nuclear industry would not exist without mining. Uranium ore is mined from either underground or surface mines as the initial step in harnessing the magnificent resource of nuclear energy.

Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.

We at Colowyo would like to thank you for the opportunity to share with the Society of Mining Engineers of A.I.M.E. the progress of reclamation at Colowyo Coal Company's multiple seam open pit coal mine which is a general partnership of W.R. Grace and Co., and the Hanna Mining Co. First, a brief history of Colowyo Coal Company (Colowyo). The Colowyo operation is located approximately 28 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado, which is in the northwest corner of the state. The Colowyo operation produces coal from a Federal Coal Lease, a portion of which has experienced previous coal mining by underground methods. The underground coal mines were known as the Red Wing Mine and The Streeter Mine, and supplied coal to numerous locations in the Rocky Mountain region.

The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.

This paper review s several new applications of solvent extraction developed in conjunction with a research project carried out under the AEC Raw Materials Division by the Dow Western Division laboratories during the last two years. A process for recovery of uranium from ores by contacting the solid directly with organic solvent without a prior aqueous leach and a process for uranium recovery by contacting thick, unfiltered leach slurry with the solvent were studied in an attempt to simplify ad reduce the cost of ore treatment procedures. Processes to produce pure UF4 products at the concentrate mills thus eliminating the production and subsequent dissolution of the concentrate were investigated. Since many of the leach liquors contained vanadium as well as uranium, solvent extraction processes for by-product vanadium were also studied.
