It is a pleasure to be here today to discuss coal's prospects with the Society of Mining Engineers of AIMS--- a group destined to play a crucial role in shaping our national energy future. Much has been said lately about attaining domestic energy self-sufficiency, but to date, little has been done. Oil tankers from Venezuela and Kuwait continue to glide across the seas to meet our incremental energy needs. Meanwhile, our principal domestic energy resources -- oil and natural gas reserves in the Outer Continental Shelf and the oil shale deposits and the coal lands of the West -remain untapped. Help, however, appears to be on the way. In a forceful address last fall, President Ford called for the elimination of oil as a fuel for base-loaded power plants and its replacement with coal by 1980. He also urged the accelerated leasing of federal lands on the Outer Continental Shelf, the resumption of coal leasing on federal lands, and the development of a new energy conservation policy. There are, of course, many details left to be worked out. Language must be developed to put statutory flesh on the conceptual bones spelled out by the President. Congress must act. Regulations must be approved and tested, if need be, in court.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

First of all let me say what a genuine pleasure it is to be here. Acapulco certainly is a beautiful change. I'm going to spend sometime talking about change, because frankly I'm astounded at the rate of change in our world today. One good example of this, reminds me that the first time I spoke before the AIME two years ago, we were at the Ramada Inn in Beckley, West Virginia. Today we're at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Now that's what I call a change. Seriously though, I'm sure you've all heard it said that the most consistent thing about our society is its constant change. Five years ago, no one could have predicted the changes we experienced in the United States during the first half of the 1970's. In the past twenty-four months alone, we have seen two presidents, three vice-presidents and hundreds of administration and government personnel changes. We have stumbled from one social crisis to another, while suffering through rising inflation, major energy shortages and labor unrest that could plunge us into a full scale economic depression. In view of these constant and unpredictable changes around us, it's obvious that we must learn to deal with change and "roll with the punches" if we are to survive. A controversial book published recently, explores in detail the various aspects of change and its impact on man.

In practice, geochemical analyses can be grouped in two broad categories according to their aim. Those that seek to determine the exact chemical composition of geological materials fall under the heading of assays, whereas applied geochemistry concerns itself with the detection of anomaly contrasts. Recent trends have blurred the distinction between both approaches for many users, as methods that were traditionally used for assays are being adopted in applied geochemistry and assays make increasing use of instrumental techniques. Nevertheless. it is important to keep a clear distinction between the two types of analyses because it has immediate practical consequences, cost is the most obvious, as well as fundamental implications. In the broadest terms, the goal of geochemistry is to strike an optimal balance between throughput and accuracy, at the lowest reasonable cost, while assays strive for accuracy. Traditionally, complete silicate analysis has been the concern of assayers whereas exploration geochemists have been more interested in base metal analyses where acid extractions of the elements, without dissolution of the silicate matrix, has been the norm. This kind of distinction is less realistic now, especially with the growth in lithogeochemical studies, and some overlap in methodology is unavoidable. However, where such overlaps occur the distinction remains in the emphasis of the work. A commonly used example is that although HF acid preparations are used by both, the emphasis in applied geochemistry is on sample throughput and batch analysis, whereas assayers are more concerned with the range of elements to be determined (Thompson and Walsh, 1983).

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

The results of studies to ameliorate acid mine drainage by retarding the rate of oxidation of pyrite at source are discussed. In the transpassive region, pyrite oxidizes by reactive dissolution, mass transfer through the product layer and diffusion in the bulk solution. One can decrease the rate of pyrite oxidation by inhibiting either oxidation reactions or cathodic reactions. It is demonstrated in this study that some surface active reagents extend the passive region by affecting both the anodic and cathodic processes. The extension to higher potentials occurs by inhibition of the anodic dissolution process whereas to lower cathodic potentials through decrease in the rate of reduction of molecular oxygen and/or ferric ions. To retard the oxidation of pyrite by ferric ions, which is considered to be the dominant oxidant under conditions of acid mine drainage, it would be necessary to restrict mass transfer or promote complexation of ferric ions at the surface. Imidazoline based reagents were found to be most effective in meeting this goal.

A single stage ball mill-cyclone circuit was extensively tested for its reactions to step changes in three controllable variables: feed rate, water to cyclones, and water to the ball mill. A series of carefully designed tests are to be carried out in order to determine relationships between the various ball mill and cyclone parameters. Cyclone overflow particle size distribution is to be continuously monitored during the tests using an ultrasonic device. Other circuit variables that are to be measured and recorded are feed rate, ball mill mass flow, cyclone feed and overflow densities, cyclone feed sump level, water flows, etc. Once the circuit performance is defined, two types of grinding circuit control systems will be evaluated: (a) mass flow-based; (b) particle size- based. Results obtained by each approach in terms of feed rate and cyclone overflow size distributions are discussed. The high sensitivity of continuous particle size measurements to grinding circuit disturbances is emphasized.

This paper exposes the reasons that led the Empresa Nacional Minera del Sahara, S.A. (ENMINSA) to the selection of a conveyor belt system for the transport of phosphate rock over a distance of 100 kilometers. ENMINSA was created in 1962, with the main objetive of the exploitation of phosphate rock deposits in the Spanish province of Sahara, in North West Africa. Poor grade outcrops were known previously. A detailed geological research carried over the province led ENMINSA to the discovery of deposits not exposed, and of much higher grade. The sector known as Bu-Craa was chosen as the most promising, and was explored by means of drill holing and shafting. The important amount of information obtained permitted a detailed evaluation of the capacity and grade of the rich ore contained in the Bu-Craa area. Simultaneously with the systematic reconnaissance of the Bu-Craa deposits, ENMINSA developped the study of the technical and economical problems required for the beneficiation of the rock, which comprised five main groups of projects: rock exploitation; beneficiation plant; rock transport from the mine site to the Atlantic coast; storage, handling and loading facilities by the sea- side, and power plant. Once determined the location of the marine loading facilities, which to date are in an advanced stage of construction (figs. 1 and 2), the studies conductive to the selection of the best transport system from the mine to the ocean, along 100 kms. distance were undertaken.

Relatively large amounts of such hydrocarbons as fuel oils are often needed in flotation of low rank coals. The amount of oil can be decreased considerably by using surfactants as promotors. The reagents which are good candidates as surfactants to promote hydrophobicity can also act as emulsifying and wetting agents. Since the physical and chemical variables influence various sub-processes in different ways, their influence on the performance parameters is complex. The results of laboratory tests are presented to show that the dual role of reagents can be judiciously exploited to increase both the recovery and grade of clean coal. The mode and order of reagent addition is critical in enhancing their efficacy as flotation promotors. The results demonstrate the benefits of proper conditioning of the pulp prior to flotation.

Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available which allow direct in-situ analysis of adsorbed layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRJIRS) with reactive internal reflection elements allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in-situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar, 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/ dodecyl sulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate, and KCl/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990).

The effect of the stability and rheological properties of magnetite dense medium on the separation performance of a 6" dense medium cyclone (DMC) is studied with the use of fine density tracers. The tests in which different size fractions of magnetite are used to prepare the dense media reveal that at low medium densities (<1.5 s.g.), the best separation is achieved when using the magnetite with intermediate particle sizes (du3.2=18 11m). At medium densities above 1.5 s.g., however, it is beneficial to use coarser magnetite. With the fine magnetite dense medium, an increase in medium density results in a decrease in separation efficiency. With the coarse magnetite, an opposite trend is observed; the separation efficiency is improved with increasing medium density. An accurate cutpoint control is critical in gravity separation. The cutpoint shift for coarse feed particles is found to decrease with increasing medium stability (density). It assumes values close to zero in a highly stable fine dense medium. When the size of the treated particles is small (<0.5 mm), the cutpoint shift is mainly determined by medium rheology. With increasing medium density, a continuous increase in cutpoint shift is observed.

Recent research by the investigators has evaluated the oxidation roasting of refractory gold concentrates in the presence of hydrated lime. (Taylor, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993). These results have indicated that it may be possible to roast concentrates in such a way as to contain nearly all of the sulfur and arsenic in the roaster calcine and that cyanidation may be possible. To further evaluate the behavior of this type of roasting system a laboratory cyclone reactor was built and operated using pyrite and hydrated lime as a .model system. Approximately 50 years ago, the principle of cyclone firing entered practical boiler construction. The appeal of the cyclone configuration was that it afforded the flash combustion process greater efficiency due to turbulence-induced increased mass transfer, heat exchange, and combustion rates.

According to Arbiter (Reference 1), the ball mill was invented by Brückner in Germany in 1876 and was first used in the United States on ores about 1905. The basic concept was a simple rotating cylindrical drum in which the tumbling action of the charge of material and grinding media resulted in size reduction of the material. Despite the very low mechanical efficiency of this method a number of factors have caused the tumbling mill to remain, by far, the most widely used piece of equipment for mineral grinding. The principal factors influencing this situation have been simplicity of design, ease of manufacture, ready adaptability to familiar material handling layouts and the absence of practical alternatives acceptable to the industry. In the early mills, the material was ground in batches, the mills being charged and discharged through doors in the shell. The shell was supported by means of solid trunnion shafts resting in plain bearings and the drive was accomplished through one of these shafts. In some later batch mills, the mill shell was supported on rollers which were also used to drive the mill. At an early stage, continuous operation was made possible by feeding and discharging the mill through hollow trunnions, the method still in most widespread use. The mechanical and structural design of the early mills was not an onerous engineering task. Norse sense and good practical knowledge were key qualifications. The mill shells had to be heavy enough to withstand the physical abuse they would receive in the field and the bearings had to have low enough unit pressures and sufficient wear retol to ensure several months of operation before the need for replacement occurred. When these requirements were satisfied, stresses developed in the equipment during operation were insignificant and the majority of structural failures were probably due to the use of inferior materials in manufacture. Over the years, the ever present demand for increased productivity has resulted in a steady Increase in the size of units of production equipment, including grinding mills. Adequate understanding of the subsurface conditions along the alignment of a planned tunnel is key for managing project risk. For achieving this understanding, geotechnical borings are conducted during design. Where their spacing cannot reduce the risk of encountering differing site conditions (DSC) in-between borings to an acceptable level, supplemental exploration methodologies or data evaluation approaches may be required to bridge the data gap. This paper compares the exploration design approaches of recent tunnel boring machine (TBM) and microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) projects in the quaternary deposits along the Eastern Seaboard, the glacial geology of the Pacific Northwest, the sedimentary rocks of the South, and metamorphic rocks in western Germany, describing their respective effectiveness of managing DSC risk.

The ability to assess, address, and predict mining-induced stress distribution is paramount in maintaining a safe and efficient underground operation as coal mines continue to develop at deeper depths and in more geologically complex reserves. This is especially true for longwall mining operations given their limited flexibility in panel layout and orientation. This paper focuses on ground behaviors and conditions observed at two deep-cover, steeply dipping longwall mining operations in Utah’s Unita coal basin. This region is susceptible to coal pillar bump/bounce events as a result of high depth of cover, high-extraction mining, and the close proximity of a thick massive stiff sandstone stratum to active mineworks. The successful prediction of mining-induced coal bump events for Mine A and Mine B operating in the Unita basin has prompted mine management to develop a rock mechanics testing database for reserve calculations. The database is applicable to mine planning as well as the development of multiple numerical models to proactively identify and address adverse ground conditions using input parameters calibrated to site-specific behaviors and conditions. For both Mine A and Mine B, the most critical question relates to longwall development and recovery for “extreme” deep-cover longwall panels at overburden depths greater than 600 m. This paper highlights the impact of high-stress concentrations associated with deep-cover longwall mining as well as the methods applied to mitigate stress impacts on miner safety and longwall production.

In most circumstances, the traditional methods of. ore reserve estimation for large undulating sedimentary deposits, such as coal and iron formations, do not allow the accurate prediction of grade for mining blocks. The problem is Particularly accute when the mining blocks are small with respect to the thickness of the geological zones in the deposit, and when there are significant grade changes between the foot-wall and hanging-wall of these zones. A simple geostatistical model has been developed, which takes into account the grade changes not only in the direction of the geological strata, but also in the direction normal to these strata. The genesis of sedimentary deposits and the resulting geological properties of these deposits were considered in the development of the model. The model has been successfully applied to the evaluation of a large coal deposit. Eventhough some practical difficulties have been encountered, for example when part of a geological zone was missing or had not been sampled, these difficulties have been .resolved. Both the theory and its practical application are presented in this paper.

A technology for producing liquid fuels from oil shale at prices competitive with crude oil prices is a necessary but not exclusive prerequisite for the development of a shale oil industry. Many other factors will affect the timing and the rate at which oil shale is commercially developed. Among the more important are: governmental policy concerning oil shale and oil resources (including the Outer Continental Shelf) that are under Federal control; oil import policy; Federal taxation of shale oil production including depletion allowances; regulatory practices; competition from other energy sources, both synthetic and natural; Federal treatment of factors affecting competing energy resources; and present legislation under which the public resources must be leased. Significant changes in any of the foregoing factors could have a controlling effect on the timing and rate of oil shale development. The effect of changes in each of these factors is evaluated.

1. Introduction Laboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the powder or slurry being ground. The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refers to a substance which when mixed into the mill contents causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed feed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use. Obviously, an expensive chemical must be effective in very small concentrations if it is to be economically justifiable; the cost criteria is calculated on the basis of the cost of the grinding additive per ton of material ground. Although there is direct experimental verification of the advantageous effect of grinding additives, no sound scientific explanation has yet been offered which explains or predicts the general behavior of additives. Rose and Sullivan have summarized most of the work undertaken prior to 1950 and Hartley, Prisbrey, and Wick have recently prepared an updated synopsis of the grinding additive literature. Many of the studies reported consist of subjecting materials with simple geometric shapes to some type of hardness or controlled single fracture test. On the other hand, a number of the studies were carried out on operating industrial scale mills, with little control or precise monitoring of the effect of the additives.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields&apos; Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis.
