Off-highway truck purchasers know the amount of tonnes, pounds, kilograms, etc, a truck will carry. However just because a truck is rated at 240 tons may in no way correlate to what that truck will actually carry. Two numbers define the carrying capacity of an off-highway truck: 1. The weight carrying capacity of the truck; 2. The volume carrying capacity of the truck. These two numbers must be in sync or the amount of payload carried will vary from the carrying capacity of the truck. Currently the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard J1363 January 1985 defines the volumetric carrying capacity of an off-highway truck. However as is well known in several South American countries, the SAE standard overrates the truck’s effective volumetric carrying capacity 15% to 20%. This paper presents a method for measuring “effective” body volumetric carrying capacity, resulting in a truck body for carrying the targeted load, matched to the loading equipment that interacts positively with the truck chassis.

INTRODUCTION The Control Problem The need for automatic control in flotation plants stems from frequent and randomly occurring disturbances to the feed slurry. Typical disturbances occur in the solids feedrate, the slurry percent sol ids, and the mineralogy and flotability of the gangue and valuable minerals. In plants where semi -autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are used, feedrate changes are very large and changes in feed percent solids of 1m or more are common. Mineralogy changes between valuable minerals are common, as are changes in the host gangue rock. As these changes occur, the operator can attempt to compensate for them by making adjustments to the flotation cell levels, the dosage rates of the collectors and frothers, the pH, and in some cases the aeration rate of the cells. This problem is sometimes complicated by the fact that different sections of the flotation plant will be processing different ore types at the same time. Potential Savings with Control Flotation control brings about savings or plant improvements in two areas; the first is in improved metallurgy and the second is in reagent savings. Improved metallurgy includes increases in the average plant recovery and achieves target concentrate grade level s more consistently. Average recovery increases between 1.0 and 5.0 percentage points have been widely reported (Paakkinen, 1979; Sutherland, 1984). Reagent savings of up to 40 percent have also been reported (Hales, 1985). VARIABLES OF IMPORTANCE Control led, Manipulated, and Disturbance Variables The initial step in the analysis of the flotation control problem is identification of important variables which can affect the efficiency of separation. The efficiency of separation is represented by a group of controlled variables which can quantify the performance of a flotation circuit. This group includes variables such as grade, recovery, tonnage through- put, and circulating loads. The efficiency of separation of a flotation circuit may generally be defined by a grade recovery map, where each point on this map re- presents a set of operating conditions (see Figure 1). However, the combination of operating conditions must be set to operate close to the economic optimum. The full importance of tailings disposal is yet to be realized by the mining industry, but our awareness of its present and future implications is growing faster, perhaps, than any single phase of ore processing. Few engineers can look very far into the future because of the complexity of the problems that may confront us if we project from the general indifference of past years through what we are already being expected to correct in existing operations, to confrontations with new statutes and an awakened public in any new plants hence- forth. The mistakes of the past have not been limited to the United States nor even to other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, all continents and subcontinents have suffered from myopia in releasing the tailings without retaining responsibility. However, the US as one of the world's great leaders in technology has a particularly unimpressive record. It may be safely generalized that the degree of control applied to the tailings of a milling operation has depended upon several factors more important than national boundaries. Thus in arid and semiarid climates no incentive was needed other than the scarcity of water to create a permanent and stable lodgment for mill tailings. On the other hand. where water has been plentiful. the temptation to let the tailings run into a river or lake or ocean (at least at certain times of the year) was often irresistible. So we find that modem tailings disposal in the southwest deserts of this country, with one or two notable exceptions where very serious breaks seem to occur at regular intervals, is satisfactory according to the standards of the 195QF and 1960s. while in various operations in Idaho, Michigan, western Colorado. Newfoundland, and elsewhere the record has been less praiseworthy. In the same way, cyanide plants which did not concern themselves about leakage, seepage, spillage, or wastage of tailings pulps with solutions containing toxic levels of free or combined cyanide soon heard a demand for better control. In consequence the industry has seen a growing use of cyanide regeneration of tailings or wash solutions, elimination of leakage, and careful structuring of tailing dams. The chemical and thermal qualities of tailing waters have occasionally been a spur to good tailings management. Some tailings disposal problems for example, the southeastern Florida phosphate clays and the Bayer red muds-have been given the intensive study they merited, but not always with much success.

My "outside exploration" began in November 1908, only 16 months after I had come to Bisbee as a raw engineer. The well publicized reputations of eminent engineers up to that time, including John Hayes Hammond, Herbert Hoover, James Douglas, D.C. Jack- ling, J. Park Channing, and a few others had been due to new mines they had found or brought to successful operation. And here was I, a mere youngster, given a chance to join the group. I knew there would be disappointments but I had no idea how many of them. In spite of the many prospects that turned out to be worthless I never looked at a new one without the feeling that this one might turn out to be the big success. This confidence, blind as it was, gave every arduous examination a zest and it made me climb every mountain on which the owner said there was something worth seeing, or on which T could see a distant staining that might mean ore. If I looked at every showing the owner suggested he at least would think I was honest and would bring other properties to our attention. This reputation of never refusing to go to see an outcrop, no matter how hot the desert sun or how rough the terrain, was probably one of my best assets. High as my hopes were at the start, they proved not to be exaggerated and if I were given a chance to do it again I would not hesitate, in spite of the jaundice, rheumatic fever, and other maladies that beset some of the expeditions. On the whole the results have equaled all my hopes. Toward the end of my years of active exploration I totaled up the score. Out of the prospects submitted to us about two out of three were eliminated after questioning the owner or prospector, without an examination. This left about a 1000 mines or prospects that seemed worth at least a preliminary look. One out of seven of these was worth a little development and a seventh of this seventh turned out to be a modest success or better. And nine or ten in all, or one out of 1000

During last year's AIME meeting in New Orleans, Deepak Malhotra and I were discussing some of the topics that would be presented in this Symposium. It seemed appropriate that along with papers on specific reagent and flocculant types, we should address research management aspects of new product development. This development is a long, arduous task that requires a significant technical and fiscal commitment by the chemical company and potential users. A flow chart depicting the research process is shown in Figure 1. The sequence of events are plotted on an undefined time line. Our experience has shown that it takes 3-5 years to complete a typical reagent development project. A new project starts with an idea of how to do something better. The ideas range from relatively simple product modifications to opportunities created by technological change. An example of this is the use of flocculants in tailings operations to close the water recycle loop. The change was brought about by the need to conserve water and comply with environmental statutes. The result was the development and wide-spread use of synthetic polymers to help in solid-liquid separation. More recently the ups and downs of oil prices have led to development of coal water slurries as an alternative to fuel oil. The slurries contain high levels of chemicals (up to 3%) to insure proper stability and burn characteristics. There are technical changes under way right now that may lead to ideas for other new products. One exciting source of new technology is the ability to manipulate genetic material of microbes to select for specific capabilities. This has evolved by leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Biologically assisted leaching and removal of wastewater impurities are two possible end uses. I'm sure that there are many others. The ideas can originate anywhere and are often half-baked at first, but to lead to new products they must be refined to provide project definition and eventually a research plan. A chemical ,development project cannot be started without approval to commit the company's resources. The internal selling job is often very difficult. The company must see clear financial benefits in order to launch efforts that may not pay off for many years. It is critical to project the total market, profitability, eventual market share, and timing of introduction of the new product. There is much uncertainty in this and the research manager is often skating on thin ice to retain his credibility. Once we obtain support from upper management, the research team is assembled to start the project. The teams generally consist of organic chemists, research metallurgists, and technicians. They have access to analytical scientists and technicians for surface and analytical chemistry. The projects are often augmented by help from university staff and consultants. This is particularly true where there is a need to develop fundamental understanding of the technology in addition to synthesis of chemicals. The project now proceeds along two lines. First, there is an emphasis on understanding the prior art. Extensive literature and patent searches are undertaken to provide research leads and to keep from "reinventing the wheel" and infringing on someone else's patent. The scientists and technologists are qualified to conduct computer-assisted library searches. This process usually uncovers 80-90% of the relevant information. The remainder is very much harder to get and requires the help of professional library search staff with scientific backgrounds. Along with literature searching, the team begins synthesis of new compounds. These are screened by use of techniques such as microflotation or filtration in a Buchner funnel. The scientists are looking for the direction of response as they modify structural features . Inevitably, a large number of candidates reach the next stage, a laboratory bench test. At this point it is possible to set up a research plan and use project management techniques to monitor progress. The bench tests are conducted in larger equipment, usually requiring 100-1000 grams of test substrate. Typical laboratory flotation tests are run in Denver or Wemco cells.

9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition

THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

In the field of minerals processing the concentration of valuable minerals normally takes place in suspensions of ore particles in liquids. The fluid resistance offered by Newtonian liquids to the movement of free settling spheres for the limiting cases of creep flow and turbulent flow is well described by Stokes' and Newton's Laws. However, these equations are not applicable to non-Newtonian fluids, since the relationship between applied shearing stress and resulting rate of shear is a non-linear function, and more than one viscosity parameter is necessary to describe their rheological properties. For this reason, the term "apparent viscosity," which has been commonly used to explain the flow resistance of the non-Newtonian systems including suspensions, may be misleading. A rigorous analysis of the mechanisms of momentum transport of solid-liquid systems is complex indeed. There are many variables that affect the properties of such systems, and precise limitations and assumptions are necessary in order to produce quantitative relationships for predicting their behavior. Very dilute suspensions of spherical particles in Newtonian liquids of identical density as the solids have been examined in the past (12); however, the study of suspensions in which there is a considerable difference in density, between the liquid and the suspended solids has been neglected.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

INTRODUCTION The selection of the optimum coal preparation plant flowsheet is a vital part of the development of a new plant or the expansion of an existing facility. Selection of an inappropriate flowsheet or individual equipment items can result in costly production losses, or needless expenditures or redundant or oversized equipment. The accuracy of the flowsheet selection process is, like most decisions, heavily dependent upon the amount, reliability, and quality of the database. A flowsheet which is based on simple borehole information from an area that has experienced little or no previous mining activity must necessarily include significant allowances for uncertainties. However, a plant which is to be built at an existing mine with good information on run-of-mine (ROM) coal quality, as well as bulk washability data and accurate projections of future quality, can be optimized. The following chapter will describe the processes which should be followed to select the most appropriate flowsheet for each unique operation. They include: 1. Examining and adjusting the washability database to reflect the ROM feed. 2. An evaluation of clean coal specifications. 3. Selection of the level of washing required. This includes no washing, if the coal is already at the desired specification, all the way through to complex total washing circuits for metallurgical grade coals. 4. Selection of the appropriate circuit such as dense medium bath vs. Baum jig. The most appropriate circuit is generally determined on the basis of economics. An approach for performing the evaluation will be desired. 5. The steps that need to be followed to develop a balanced plant flowsheet. ADJUSTING WASHABILITY DATA It is not unusual to have as many as 10 to 20 sets of washability information available for a particular mining property. These may be a combination of core and bulk samples or all bulk samples. In the latter case, they may also be face and/or ROM samples. It is necessary to reduce all of this information to a single set of washability data that is representative of the mean feed to the proposed preparation plant. This set is used to compare the clean coal yield and quality characteristics of the various flowsheet options. The term "representative" has some serious negative connotations. It is recognized that ROM coal quality will vary throughout a mine. However, over a period of 250 to 350 days per year, certain trends can be established. If possible, this "representative" sample should be close to the coal quality of the mean daily sample in terms of raw ash and sulfur contents, clean coal yield, and clean coal ash and sulfur content. INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The method, thoroughly worked out and tested for 10 years, consists of taking the second split urine sample from the HPLC preparation, evaporating to dryness and dissolving in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury occurs during recovery operations, ? Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action, ? Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

However, history has shown that technology applied with correct logistics and strategy makes a significant difference. Never has the minerals industry faced such daunting challenges and been in such need of a step change. Application of autonomous systems has been steadily increasing in the minerals industry. Automation technology has changed the mining value chain from exploration to mineral processing and refining. The future state will only see additional in-roads of automation into more processes and the whole system design. To better understand the near-future potential of automation, it is useful to explore and review the current state of automation in minerals development. A review of the state of automation research is given. The review will consider three critical areas: automation technology, system’s engineering and management processes around automation, and the role of human factors engineering in automated and semi-automated systems. The review ends with a discussion on the social and political risks of automation in terms of shared value and sustainable development.

Lead and zinc contents of elm, maple, and oak trees and of soils in which the trees grew were determined in samples from the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district, and from an area outside but contiguous to the district. The lead and zinc analyses of plant materials served to differentiate the mineralized and non-mineralized areas. Stems contained about two times as much lead and about 2-5 times as much zinc as did leaves taken from the same stems. Lead and zinc analyses of all soil horizons could be used to differentiate between the two areas. Soils at most sample sites in the mineralized district seemed to be more reliable than plants for geochemical prospecting and are a more practical sampling medium. Soil samples from areas with thick loess cover, however, failed to indicate the presence of mineralized bodies whereas tree samples from the same sites contained anomalous amounts of lead and zinc. It is suggested that in areas of thick loess cover plant samples could be used in prospecting for lead and zinc.

INTRODUCTION Tens of deposits in' coal basins of Western and Eastern Siberia are being open-mined with the technology of overburden rehandling into the mined out space of pits by excavators - draglines. This technology is preferred due to the high productive Russian equipment, comparatively low cost, and relatively small Influence exerted on the environment. The basic tendency of the last decades is the aspiration for enlarging the sphere of the' technology application for development of gentle and steeply dipping seams with the use of blast destruction of overburden and with combined winning of loose alluviums and rock partings. Complex technological schemes with multiple rehandling are widely used. In addition to it, stripping workings, intermediate storage of mineral resources, placing of transport dumps, and engineering construction can be realized with the use of draglines. More than ten of dragline faces are simultaneously exploited in some pits, and the rehandling coefficient ranks from 0.1 to 8. Here, conditions of winning and placing (position of a face and existing dump) are varying in space and time; this leads to the necessity of reconsidering the order for conduction of works (schemes) within the current designing. By now, in order to this, it is required to realize complex engineering calculations by graph-analytical methods and definite experience. The need is available for automatization of this process by creation of the corresponding software. The software is to: • Orient on the active pits and use information on the existing geology, equipment, and situation in mine. • Calculate the existing schemes more operative and on a higher qualitative level to model their development in a pit space with parameter optimization. • Predict situations demanding to change the existing technology for mining operations and recommend optimal technological schemes. METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR MODELING The problem is not new, it has more than fifty year-old history of creating mathematical models algorithms, and programs in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Canada. Australia and other countries with the developed mining branch. Conventionally, all population of programs can be divided into three groups depending on goal and interval of prediction: • Long-term programs used in designing and intended for substantiation of the nine capacity, selection of mining system, establishment of limits for applying the technology of overburden rehandling. "The excavation of a tunnel in highly weathered and strongly fractured rock masses due to tectonic actions is still a challenge. In order to maintain reasonable productivity, excavation through a wide zone of highly tectonized rock mass requires a detailed, integrated study of the construction solutions and a monitoring system to minimize the process time and to optimize the adopted consolidation measures in accordance with a predefined matrix of possible support systems. This paper summarizes some interesting data acquired during the excavation of the Brenner Railway Base Tunnel system between Italy and Austria. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs through the fault line between the European and the African tectonic plate. This big fault zone is called “Periadriatic Line.” In particular, data acquired in the exploratory-service tunnel have been analyzed. Furthermore, the base concepts for defining the consolidation and support solutions adopted for the excavation of the exploratory tunnel are described. INTRODUCTION The Brenner Railway Base Tunnel (BBT) is a system of underground structures and tunnels that is designed to connect Italy and Austria using new railway standards. It is based on high speed (HS) concepts and applies the European Standards for Interoperability (TSI). The railway includes twin tunnels for a total length of about 55.0 Km without considering the connection tunnels to the existing underground railway in Innsbruck. Including the latter, the total length of the tunnel system reaches 64 Km, and is among the longest tunnels in the world. The Italian section passes through the so-called ""Periadriatic Line,"" which is an important tectonic structure generated by the collision between the European and the African tectonic plates. Despite the extensive investigations carried out (boreholes down to 700 meter depth), significant geological and mechanical uncertainties inside the Periadriatic formations remained unsolved. In order to elevate the level of confidence and observe the behavior of the rock mass at a representative scale, the BBT Authority decided to excavate in advance the service tunnel, which has taken the function of an exploratory tunnel. The data and observations collected during its excavation would provide important insights for the design of the main tunnels."

As a result of concern for the citizens of the State of Illinois who owned structures above underground mine workings, the Illinois State Legislature passed House Bill 158 in 1978. This bill amends the Illinois lnsurance Code and creates the Mine Subsidence Reinsurance Fund which is an insurance pool that is to receive a state appropriation of $500,000 as "start-up" money. One hundred thousand dollars has been paid to the fund as of October, 1982. The Fund is to return this appropriation to the State and is to remain self-supporting from premiums. The Fund utilized a pre-existing institution, which also was an insurance pool, the "Fair Plan Facility" and its governing Board, consisting primarily of insurance executives, to administer the program. The Mine Subsidence lnsurance Act went into effect October 1, 1979, and the bill provides that property owners in the State of Illinois may purchase up to $50,000 of mine subsidence insurance which is attached to their fire insurance policy. The deductible is normally 2%, but cannot be less than $250 or more than $500. The annual rate structure for residential structures in 1981 for $50,000 coverage is $10 (frame), and $12 (masonry). The rate structure for commercial buildings is based on the value of the building and the rates for $50,000 maximum coverage is adjusted upward. The insurance was mandated by the State Department of lnsurance and rolled onto the insurance policies of the homeowners in 34 counties which had been recognized as having sufficient exposure to subsidence damage to be covered by the Act. One percent or more of the land surface is undermined in each of the 34 counties. In the other counties undermined in the State of Illinois, insurance is available to the homeowner upon request to the private insurance carrier.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

Introduction Troublesome shales have plagued the petroleum industry for more than 50 years. Unstable boreholes have been experienced when drilled into shale formations; sane have been studied almost at the beginning of rotary drilling. A little progress has been made since then, but much is still to be learned. No simple solution exists so far, but good drilling practices combined with good mud practices have been helpful. It is well known that shales in general have a strong affinity for water, and when water is adsorbed, the stability of the shale section of a well is reduced; cohesive strength will be re- bed, properties will be altered and shale will generally expand and/or crumble. The amount of water a shale will adsorb depends on the characteristics of its clay mineral and the ionic concentration of surrounding fluid. Fluid loss and the resulting hydration of an unstable formation can lead to serious downhole problems. The rate of fluid loss depends greatly on the permeability of the deposited cake. In impermeable formations, however, there is no loss of fluid into the formation. As such, shale, because of its very low porosity and almost no permeability, could be termed impermeable. Yet there is strong evidence that shale surfaces are wetted by an invasion of fluid into the formation through microfractures and jointed planes. It is this wetting that causes the shales to swell and slough into the hole, resulting in problems such as increased mud volume and treating costs, bridges and fill-up, stuck pipe, overgauge hole, poor cement jobs and increased cement requirements, and logging and completion difficulties. Drilling operations have been defeated by severe shale problems, resulting in & hole being plugged and abandoned after several weeks of drilling. Shales are we1l known as being difficult and costly to drill. Numerous fishing jobs have plagued drilling operations, and the cost of reaming tight holes ad weighting up the drilling mud to control shale sloughing has been high. The concept of controlling water loss to stop sloughing was introduced in the 1920's. It was known-then that calcium in fresh water re- strains clay £ran excessive swelling (theory of osmosis) . This reinforced the belief that calcium-based muds such as lime, gypsum and calcium chloride should minimize hydration of clays. Lime muds were then introduced for this purpose and others in the 1930-1940 decade1. They were used for shale inhibition but were not effective. In an attempt to improve them, a special calcium-type mud beam popular during the 1950's. Hole enlargement continued and they too were considered ineffective. During & early 1960qs, papers were published claiming that shale swelling could be prevented by using high concentrations of chemical thinner called Chrane Lignosulfonate1. This began the era of highly treated lignosulfote muds. Unfortunately, the hole enlargement problem continued. During & mid-1960’s, oil based muds were used for the purpose of inhibition of shales. Not until 1966 did Mondshine2 suggest that the water phase be saturated with calcium chloride. The cost of using oil based mud was considered by most operators not worth the additional hole stability. The potassium chloride-polymer muds were also used in many fields in the United States and western Canada. The use of these muds has been claimed to prevent clay swelling by inhibition and encapsulation in sane areas of western Canada. They are also expensive and their ueneral application is still experimental. To reduce filtrate loss when sloughing shale becomes a problem during drilling is a reasonable practice. This study will investigate the use of cationic organic additives to mud to form a protective barrier between the shale - which are primarily composed of clays - and water that will keep water from entering the microfractures and will also prevent them from hydrating. In so doing, an understanding of modern clay chemistry and & dispersive properties of cationic additives in water based systems will be our most valuable tools. This study will also present and solve a mathematical model for simulating cation transport phenomena in fractured shales using the Framdlich equilibrium adsorption isotherm. The studies will analyze wellbore failure and stability as affected by cationic organic material.
