Understanding the future availability of critical minerals requires a global perspective. It is essential to know where deposits are located, their reserves and resources, the technologies necessary for production, and the costs of producing and transporting the products to consumers. ? As mining companies look to maintain or increase their operating capabilities and increase their mineral resource bases, the search for commodities expands beyond developed terrestrial regions of the world, to include marine resources. (Figure 1) Operating challenges in these locations include finding skilled workers, building infrastructure, improving recovery technologies and practicing sustainable development.

Introduction The ore deposits of the Viburnum Trend in the Southeast Missouri Lead District constitute the world's largest lead producing district. Six or seven mines currently are in production in the Viburnum Trend. The principal minerals are few in number, simple in composition, and form simple superposition and replacement textures. The economically valuable minerals in the typical lead-zinc ores of the Viburnum Trend are the sulfides, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and siegenite. The most abundant gangue minerals are dolomite, marcasite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and dickite. Four concentrates, lead, zinc, copper, and cobalt are produced from the ores, and they contain an interesting suite of trace elements, of which silver and cadmium are recovered at the smelter and refinery.1 Emphasis is given here to the variations in directions of ore fluid flow based upon interpretations of the positions of orebodies due to the ore fluids being impeded by Precambrian basement relief and upon patterns of ore mineral/metal zoning. The Precambrian basement relief and Lamotte Formation pinchout has exerted an important control upon the specific locations of orebodies in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. The locations of some orebodies along one side of Precambrian knobs or ridges strongly suggests that they are positioned on the side from which the ore fluids flowed. Other orebodies are located in positions that suggest that they formed where the ore fluids passed around or between Precambrian knobs. Patterns of mineral and/or metal zoning have been used in many mineral districts to interpret the directions of ore fluid flow. The mineral/metal zoning pattern correlates closely with that of the mineral paragenesis. The earliest deposited minerals tend to be deposited nearest to the source, the later deposited minerals next closest to the source, and the latest deposited minerals furthest from the source. In the Southeast Missouri Lead District, it is interpreted here that the early-deposited copper-rich ores are closest to the source of the ore fluids, the subsequently-deposited zinc-rich ores are next closest to the source, and iron-rich ores are furthest from the source.

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, are upgrading their existing particle accelerator for the next generation of experiments and have three major packages of underground construction work in progress. Each package involves the construction of shafts, cavern, tunnels and surface buildings. This paper gives an overview of CERN, the LHC Project and a more detailed discussion of design process, design review and construction works of Experimental Point 5. The LHC works at Point 5 include two large shafts, two major parallel caverns with a total span of 50 m, which are separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. The overburden ground consists of around 50 m of water bearing moraine (silty, clayey gravels and sands) overlying 20 mof molasse, which consists of horizontally bedded marls and sandstones. The shaft shave been constructed with ground freezing, primary concrete lining, membrane and secondary slip formed concrete lining. The concrete pillar was then excavated and concreted in advance of excavation of the two caverns. Cavern construction includes primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by waterproof membrane and primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by water proof membrane and insitu concrete secondary lining.

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

Mud is one of the oldest building materials used by man, but it is not only of historic interest. Even today in many parts of the world, particularly lightly forested areas, it is the chief building material. Many authorities believe that at least 30% and perhaps 50% of the world's present population lives in earthen dwellings (Dethier, 1985, Coffman et al., 1990). Not all of these people are members of primitive societies or live in third world countries. European, African, Asian, and both North and South American countries contain a large number of such structures. In the United States, the American West, and particularly the Southwest, is known for this type of construction. Some of the earliest remains of adobe structures are those discovered in the ruins of Neolithic farming villages in Mesopo¬tamia dating as far back as 7000 BC (Steen, 1972). The word adobe has its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs denoting brick and evolved to its present form through Arabic and Spanish (Lumpkins, 1977). The Spanish conquest of the New World spread the use of wooden molds to produce a standard adobe brick. Today, the word adobe is used to describe various earth building materials and techniques, usually referring to sun-dried adobe brick now used in the United States, but is also applied to puddled adobe structures, mud-plastered logs or branches (Jacal or waddle-and-daub), pressed-earth blocks, and rammed-earth walls or pisé (Smith and Austin, 1989, Ferm, 1985). Modern mud construction is used in many countries in various parts of the world. In the United States, the states from Texas to California are perhaps best known for this type of construction. Of these states, New Mexico has the dominant reputation for adobe use. Indeed, in New Mexico the Santa Fe style (Fig. 1) has made adobe not only acceptable, but preferred. RAW MATERIALS Adobe soil used by present day adobe producers, and probably past adobe producers as well, is principally sandy loam (50% clay and silt), although clayey silts are used in some areas (Coffman et al., 1990). In New Mexico, the best adobe soils are those developed on stream deposits, particularly Holocene (Recent) terrace deposits and older, loosely compacted geologic formations, such as the Santa Fe Group (Tertiary) located in the Rio Grande Valley. Some modern adobe producers use a mixture of materials from the screened fines of aggregate operations and mud from irrigation ditches in the river valleys combined with varying amounts of sand to produce the proper blend. Mineralogy Bulk Mineralogy: X-ray diffraction analyses of whole rock samples from many parts of the world where adobe is the dominant construction material show the major constituents of adobe are quartz and feldspar, with lesser amounts (in order of abundance) of calcite, clay minerals, and gypsum (Coffman et al., 1990). Adobes from and climates contain considerable calcite; in some cases calcite is second only to quartz in volume. Quartz, feldspar, most of the clay minerals, and some calcite commonly are derived from the mechanical/chemical breakdown of older rocks units. Some of the clay minerals, much of the calcite and perhaps all of the gypsum are precipitated from evaporating water. Clay Mineralogy: Clay-size minerals consist dominantly of clay minerals, but nearly clay-size fractions contain minor amounts of quartz and calcite, and occasionally other nonclay minerals. In earth construction materials from New Mexico, clay-size particles are the most compositionally variable in commercial adobe soils. However, the clay mineral groups in this size fraction consist of about equal parts of expandable clay minerals (smectite and mixed¬layer illite/smectite or I/S) and non-expandable clay minerals (ka¬olinite, illite, and chlorite), with minor quartz, calcite, and feldspar (Smith and Austin, 1989, Austin, 1990). In the and American Southwest, smectite is commonly calcium-rich and the I/S is dis¬organized and randomly interstratified. In a study of 42 New Mex¬ican commercial adobe soils, only two contained chlorite, and vermiculite, sepiolite, and palygorskite were not found. Soils in temperate climates, as are found in the midwestern and northeastern United States, contain an abundance of illite (Potter et al., 1975). The clay minerals in earthen structures of that region and in Europe commonly contain illite with less amounts of kaolinite, smectite, I/S, chlorite, and vermiculite. In contrast, the clay-size fractions of soils of humid tropical areas are typically acid, with kaolinite as the dominant clay mineral and lesser amounts of I/S, illite, smectite, and others (Chamley, 1989).

INTRODUCTION The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is for the lifetime of the mine and, therefore, it is extremely important that a proper choice be made. Several types of mine hoist designs, including double drum hoists, single drum hoists, friction hoists, and various special designs of these, are available to¬day. Each has advantages and disadvantages and they should only be used in suitable applications. Drive systems for mine hoists must be evaluated together with the mechanical systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanical system and then choose a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist, on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe) hoist, which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum Hoists Single Drum Hoist: A single drum hoist (shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1) can be used as a service or production hoist with the cage or skip in balance with a counterweight (Figs. 2 and 3). It can efficiently service one or more levels, since the location of the counterweight at any time is not important. As a pro¬duction hoist with skips in balance, the single drum hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the single drum hoist. This has to be done periodi¬cally to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the single drum hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multilayer winding is necessary, the single drum hoist must have a divider to allow a sep¬arate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application, the counter¬ weight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Fig. 4). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are re¬duced. Double Drum Hoist: A double drum hoist in oper¬ation is shown in Fig. 5. Double Drum Hoist With One Drum Clutched: As a service hoist with cage and counterweight, a double drum hoist with one drum clutched (Fig. 6) can serve several levels efficiently. The advantage of having the clutched drum is that it allows rapid adjustment of ropes due to initial stretch. Some users may prefer the single drum hoist with manual rope adjustment, while others consider the added expense of the second drum and clutch is justified to make rope adjustments quickly. The value of this feature for a particular application should be discussed with the hoist manufacturer. As a production hoist with skips in balance for a multi¬level operation, the clutch can be adjusted for efficient hoisting from any level. Double Drum Hoists with Both Drums Clutched: There are also double drum hoists that have both drums clutched (Fig. 7). The main advantage claimed for this type of hoist is that if something happens in one of the two compartments, the hoist can operate in the other compartment to raise and lower men and sup¬plies. This feature is particularly favorable if there is only one shaft entrance to the mine. Multiple Drum Hoist: The multiple drum hoist, a South African innovation, is a type of drum hoist about which everyone should be aware. Basically, it uses two hoist ropes per conveyance which at great depths per¬mits use of smaller ropes and smaller drums. There are none in use in the United States today. However, they should be considered in very deep mines. Friction (Koepe) Hoists This hoist (Fig. 8) was introduced to the mining world by Frederick Koepe in 1877. Representative sample s of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota, were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation attained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine -grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80 to 95%.

Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical. As recently as ten years ago it was produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mtpy. Since then, both its production and use have declined; however, approximately half the production still comes from natural sources. [Fig. 1] illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Iran, Spain, and the Russian Republics. MINERALOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and Dewiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominantly sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominantly carbonate as alkali or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found in two principal minerals, mirabilite and thenardite. Mirabilite, the hydrous form, is commonly called Glauber's salt. It was discovered by the German chemist, J.R. Glauber (1603-1668), who derived its name from the Latin, sal mirabile, meaning wonderful salt. Thenardite, the anhydrous variety, was named for the French chemist, Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1857) of the University of Paris (Mitchell, 1979). The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. Sodium sulfate also is found in compounds, such as the minerals glauberite, the double salt of anhydrous sodium and calcium sulfate, bloedite, the hydrous double-salt of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, and burkeite, the anhydrous double-salt of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate. Over 40 minerals contain sodium sulfate in varying proportions; many are of special interest because of their frequent occurrence. Table 1 lists some sodium-sulfate bearing minerals. The reader is referred to other publications (Cole, 1926, Dana, 1932, Grabau, 1920, and Dietrich, 1969) for descriptions of these minerals. Only mirabilite and thenardite will be described herein. Mirabilite Na$04.10H20, contains 55.9% water of crystallization. It is noted for its efflorescence or spontaneous loss of water. On dehydration it changes to the anhydrous form, Na2S0,. Mirabilite is an opaque to colorless, water-soluble mineral that tastes first cool, then slightly bitter. It has a specific gravity of 1.48. It frequently forms as efflorescent, needlelike monoclinic crystals, but generally is found in the massive form. Thenardite, the anhydrous mineral, Na2S04, contains 43.68% Na20 and 56.32% SO3. It ranges from colorless to white and may be tinted shades of gray or brown. It is a water soluble mineral with a slightly salty taste. Its specific gravity (2.67) and hardness (2.5 to 3) exceed those of mirabilite. It commonly occurs in the massive form without visible crystals. Its crystals are frequently tabular pyramids of the orthorhombic system. Sodium sulfate also occurs as a heptahydrate, containing seven molecules of water, but this is unstable and has not been found in the natural environment. The solubility of sodium sulfate has an important effect on the crystallization of the salt in nature, as well as in its production. Its solubility in water generally increases as a nonlinear function of temperature. Below 1.2°C, ice and mirabilite form. As the temperature is increased above O°C, increasing amounts of sodium sulfate become soluble. At 32.4°C, a transition point on the solubility curve is reached, as the decahydrate melts in its own water of crystallization and the anhydrous form crystallizes. With in- creasing temperatures, solubility decreases somewhat. The presence of other dissolved salts changes the transition temperature and solubility characteristics of sodium sulfate.

A 15 km water supply tunnel is being constructed in Buenos Aires, Argentinata expand the capacity of the existing system. Two 4.3 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunneling machines operating at times from the same shaft on a congested work site and advancing through sedimentary deposits underlying this wonderful city pose interesting challenges. As of January 1999approximately 50% of the tunnel has been excavated. Combined machine production rates of 1026 m/month have been achieved. Presentations made in prior proceedings can be referenced for details of the overall Project scope and for details of the tendering process. The purpose of this paper is to compliment those presentations by addressing now the execution of the work.

The issue of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of the amphiboles actinolite, tremo1ite, and anthophyllite to the same degree as asbestos has been studied in detail by the National Stone Association. The ramifications of such a regulation, and the over simplistic regulatory definition of a fiber, are enormous not only for the aggregate industry and its users, but also for the nation. Evaluation of the health, geological, mineralogical, technical, economic and legal issues do not support an "asbestos-like" regulation of non-asbestiform minerals. The adverse consequences of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of actinolite, tremolite and anthophyllite like asbestos would be magnified many times if a similar standard for generic mineral fibers were promulgated.

The STG integrated method of grouting can be divided into the several phases as outlined in preceding chapters. For convenience in describing technical procedures, they can be grouped as: 1. Investigations in non-geotechnical, exploration bore¬holes. 2. Drilling the holes necessary for geotechnical investiga¬tions and for grouting. 3. Conducting appropriate hydrogeologic tests in those holes and consequent calculations. 4. The preparation of a clay mortar. 5. The preparation of a clay-cement grout with additives. 6. The injection of the grout. 7. Checking the quality of the grout curtain. Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 are discussed below. These activities contain the procedural aspects of grouting. 7.1 DRILLING GROUT HOLES Grout holes belong to a very select class of drillholes. The necessary drilling equipment must enable the operator to drill the holes in inclined, twisting directions. In addi¬tion, the equipment must permit drilling under structurally and hydrogeologically complex conditions. The equipment must permit the operator to conduct specific testing activi¬ties in the drillholes. These activities include hydrodynamic analyses, flowmetric analysis, and the installation and re¬moval of deflectors, packers, grouting plugs, casings, lin¬ers, pumping facilities and other work. As explained in Chapters 5 and 6, the grouting of sat¬urated rock is conducted both through holes drilled from the surface and through holes drilled from the face of a shaft, drift, or tunnel. The drilling of grout holes from the surface can be carried out by an aggregate of equipment that can be the same equipment used for drilling exploration boreholes. Depending on the projected depth of the holes, the STG ZIF- 1200MR and ZIF-650 drilling rigs (or modifications of them) are used. The SKB-4, SKB-5 and SKB-7 high-output drilling rigs (workover rigs) have been used in recent years. The STG BMP-24 drilling rigs are used for carrying out the descent-lifting operations for drilling holes from the sur¬face. In a number of cases, the UKB-500C, URB-3AM and URB-2A power-fed drilling equipment is used for drilling holes from the surface. It should be noted that the drilling of grout holes usually requires an electric drive assembly. Drilling with diesel drive assemblies would be used only to preclude the possi¬bility of losing electric power during drilling operations. Turbine drilling would be used only for appropriate techni¬cal-economic reasons. The selection of the grout hole design is determined by the hydrogeological and structural geological conditions at the site as interpreted in Chapters 2 and 3. The design of grout holes must be as simple as possible in order to min¬imize costs. Hole design guidelines can be adopted as a basis for this purpose, unless site-specific conditions require otherwise. The mouth of the drillhole must be outfitted with a guide-pipe having a length of at least 2 m and an outside diameter from 219 to 234 mm. The upper part of the hole must be attached by a jig consisting of borehole casing that has a diameter ranging from 108 to 146 mm. The length of the jig h is determined by the equation [ ] where k = 1.1 to 1.2 is the load factor; P,, is the injection pressure of the grout into the mouth of the drillhole; D is the external diameter of the jig pipe; m = 0.6 to 0.7 is the work condition factor; T[ ].1 MPa is the bonding value of the rock cemented to the jig. The grout hole is drilled from the jig shoe to the de¬signed depth using a rock-crushing bit with a diameter of 93 mm or more. However in complex hydrogeological condi¬tions when the shaft intersects unstable rock, other hole designs can be used. The diameter of grout holes must permit an aggregate of investigations to be conducted in them using down-hole borehole geophysical and flowmetric logging instruments. It is necessary to cement the casing strings reliably in the grout holes, thereby permitting the injection of the grout under high pressure through the pres¬sure tight mouth of the borehole. Technological details for drilling grout holes such as the rotational rate of the drill bit, the axial load on the rock¬crushing bit, and the drilling fluid flow rate are optimized for the specific rock-hydrogeological conditions largely by experience. The hole diameter and type of rock crushing bit are important variables in these details of drilling. It is advisable to drill holes using water as the drilling fluid. However in those cases where the hole walls are unstable or under very high ground water pressure, the use of a well¬ engineered drilling mud should not be precluded. Unfortu¬nately, drilling mud can influence test results. When steeply dipping fractures with inclination angles of more than 60 to 70° are encountered, it is necessary to drill guided, inclined grout holes. 4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. During the past three years the New York Trap Rock Corporation has been restricting blasting operations to days when favorable atmospheric conditions prevailed. By favorable atmospheric conditions is meant the absence of temperature inversions or isothermals in the lower atmosphere or under 6,000 feet altitude. Strong wind and wind shear can also cause conditions unfavorable for blasting. As a result of this practice, there has been a marked decrease in the number of blasting complaints received. The New York Trap Rock Corporation operates four stone quarries on or near the Hudson River within 60 miles of New York City. The Company supplies approximately 7,080,000 tons of high grade, crushed and graded aggregate, rip rap and by-products to the New Pork City area annually, This stone is carried to the market by a fleet of company owned deck &cows which are moved by tugs of a subsidiary towing company. Stone from two of the quarries is diabase: and, from the remaining two, dolomite.

Despite the limited demand for rare-earth elements, as well as yttrium and scandium, in conventional applications, the emergence of ne~ high-technology applications such as supermagnets, lasers and superconductors is expected to result in significant demand for some of these elements. This paper examines the anticipated applications and demands for rare-earth elements over the next decade and their implications on the utilization of available resources. Process methods for the recovery of rare-earth elements from conventional and unconventional resources are reviewed in the context of their growing demand. Challenges facing the industries in meeting this opportunity are also discussed.

A computer program has been developed to simulate evacuation of a mine in various configurations. The simulation input variables include characteristics of the mine, expressed, in the form of a network of passages, properties of hoists and hoisting strategies, initial miner positions, ventilation and compressed air velocities, stench warning system and self rescuer capabilities. The simulation can be carried out for cases in which there is no fire, i. e. , fire drill simulation, or for cases in which there is a fire at any arbitrary location. The fire is assumed to generate gases which impede movement of miners in the gaseous region. However, the thermal effects of the fire are not considered. The simulation output include the evacuation time for each miner, movement of the hoists, propagation of smoke through the mine passages and smoke exposure of the miners. Several illustrative simulations have been carried out to verify validity of the program and to demonstrate its capabilities. The computer program has been able to predict evacuation time, within 5 percent, for an actual fire drill. It is believed that this program can be used to evaluate evacuation performance of a mine, identify problem areas and demonstrate improvements due to the recommended corrective actions.

Brought on stream in 1975, the 10,000-tpd copper oxide processing plant of Anamax Mining Co. at Twin Buttes, Ariz., is now at design capacity. Based on acid agitation leaching, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning, the Anamax plant bridges an ore to metal gap by producing mine site copper cathodes from lime-bearing oxidized feed. Until recently, such material was considered submarginal because copper recovery was uneconomic using conventional methods. The new Twin Buttes oxide plant, the largest of its kind in North America, is one stage in the expansion of Anamax, a joint venture owned equally by The Anaconda Co. and Amax Inc. Other phases include an accelerated stripping program in the pit, an expansion of the sulfide concentrator from 32,000 to 40,000 tpd, and construction of a 57 MW diesel generating station for the oxide plant. Once the basic oxide flowsheet had been selected, Anamax awarded a contract to a joint venture of Arthur G. McKee and Co.' (Western Knapp Engineering Div.) and Davy Powergas' (a member of the Davy International group). The contract covered process design, engi¬neering, procurement, and construction. The property, identified by Banner Mining Co. in the 1950s and developed by Anaconda, was put into production in 1965 as an open pit mine equipped with a 32,000-tpd sulfide flotation concentrator. The Twin Buttes mine has since become one of the largest earth¬moving operations in the world, excavating some 10 tons of waste per ton of ore. At the original sulfide mill feed rate, the mining fleet moved 375,000 tpd of material (225,000 tpd alluvium and 150,000 tpd of rock). The most significant copper mineral in the ore body is chalcopyrite, which is scattered in pockets of weak mineralization. Cap oxidation has progressed to depths of several hundred feet, principally as chryso¬colla. Present estimates place minable reserves at 347 million tons of sulfide ore grading 0.6% copper and 55 million tons of oxide ore grading 0.9% recoverable copper from 1.25% total copper. The nonre¬coverable fraction is composed of native copper and insoluble copper oxides and sulfides. The oxide ore has been partially stripped, and 25 million tons having a copper content greater than 0.6% have been stockpiled. The stripping of oxide ore to expose sulfides will continue for several years. The copper oxide studies launched by Banner Mining in the 1950s were continued by Anaconda. Process routes investigated included: acid leaching; cyanide leaching; segregation roasting; chlorination, oxidation, and reduction; flotation in combination with leaching; cal¬cite flotation plus leaching; copper oxide flotation; and sulfidization flotation. By late 1968 test work favored a low temperature roast followed by an ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach of the ore. During this period, acid leaching had been discounted because of excessive con¬sumption of expensive acid by the high limestone ore matrix. Restric¬tive SO2 emission controls in 1971 suggested an increase in acid production and availability at a lower cost. Research then switched to acid leaching, resulting in development of the present flowsheet. Mechanically agitated leaching in a cascaded series of tanks was selected in preference to vat leaching after piloting a stirred-tank system. Preliminary testing of vat leaching indicated that inter-vat solution clarification problems could be caused by gas evolution from leaching of high limestone ore. Lack of research time for resolution of this problem, plus success of the pilot agitation system, dictated the final flowsheet selection. In 1973 Anamax decided to proceed with agitation acid leaching to produce liquor for a solvent ion exchange (SIX) and electrowinning (EW) installation. At that time, such systems were proving their eco¬nomic viability, and they allowed direct recovery of high quality cath odes while bypassing the smelting and refining of lower grade cement copper precipitates. The Anamax oxide plant processes a grade of about 1% recovera¬ble copper from stockpiled sources and new mine production. Unit operations include size reduction, agitation leaching, countercurrent decantation washing of residue, pH adjustment of solution, clarifica¬tion, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning of copper, with a mini¬mum of environmental impact. The feed to the primary crushers is composed of: 1) -10-in. stockpiled oxide ore, which has passed through the mine crusher and has been grade-segregated to allow blending for a consistent feed material. 2) -4-ft ROM oxide ore stockpiled in the early mining operation. 3) -10-in. ore currently being mined. Ore is delivered in 100-ton mine trucks to a dump pocket, where an apron feeder transfers the ore to an inclined 6-in. fixed grizzly. The grizzly oversize passes through a 48 x 60-in. primary jaw crusher, where it is reduced to -6 in. The fixed grizzly undersize and the crusher product are conveyed to a 4-in. vibrating grizzly. Oversize from this grizzly reports to a 7-ft Standard cone crusher, where it is reduced to -1 in. The crusher product and the vibrating grizzly undersize are conveyed to two 8 x 20-ft double-deck vibrating screens that operate in closed circuit with two 7-ft short head cone crushers. Screen undersize (-1/2 in.) is delivered to a covered conical fine ore stockpile with a designed live capacity of 15,000 st. Beneath the stockpile are ten Pioche belt feeders feeding two conveyor belts that supply the milling circuits. Each group of five feeders has two variable speed and three fixed speed drives. Grinding to 95% -48 mesh is done in two parallel lines, each consisting of an 111/1 x 18S -ft rod mill and a 12' x 30-ft ball mill in open circuit. Water is added to maintain a pulp density of 72% solids in the mills. Further water additions are made to the ball mill discharge sumps to create a 60% solids slurry for transfer to the leaching reactors. The nominal grinding rate is 440 tph solids. A splitter box on the product from the mills separates the incoming slurry into two streams, one for the leaching reactors and the other for the pH adjustment reactors. This split is determined by the lime content of the feed material and the pH of solution entering the pH adjustment reactors. Five 30-ft diam by 31-ft high mechanically agitated, rubber-lined leach tanks are arranged in cascade, with gravity transfer from one to another by enclosed launders. Concentrated sulfuric acid (93.2%) from storage is added to the pulp principally at the first leach tank, and the reacted slurry leaving the cascade after a 5-hr residence time at 50% solids is pumped to countercurrent decantation (CCD) wash thickeners.' At this point, most of the soluble copper has been leached from the ore. Up to 250 lb of sulfuric acid is consumed per ton of ore, the acid being supplied in tank cars from a nearby smelter. Leached slurry at 50% solids is washed countercurrently with return raffinate from the SIX plant in a series of four Doff-Oliver center caisson, 400-ft diam thickeners. Solids advance from thickeners No. I through No. 4 to the tailings dam. SIX raffinate advances from thickener No. 4 to thickener No. l, where a pregnant solution overflows to pH adjustment. To optimize solvent extraction, the pH of the pregnant solution from CCD thickener No. I is adjusted from 1.5 to 2.5 by adding unreacted ground slurry (split from the grinding circuit) to the preg¬nant overflow of No. I CCD thickener. The resulting slurry is retained for 45 min in three mechanically agitated leach tanks. CO, generated during leach and pH adjustment is ducted to a demister, where entrained acid droplets are removed. The cleaned CO, and the No. 4 CCD underflow are the only effluents from the plant. The underflow of No. 4 thickener mixes with tailings from the sulfide concentrator and is neutralized. Slurry exits the pH adjustment vessels at about 10% solids and

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

With the recent demand for increased coal production there has been a corresponding increase in the horsepower of the shearing machines. The resultant increase in the machine haulage pull has heightened the incident of haulage chain breakage resulting in machine downtime, but more seriously the danger to face personnel. This paper discusses the application of chainless haulage to longwall mining and describes the systems currently available.

The availability of coal resources of selected 7.5-minute quadrangles of southwest Indiana was examined in this study. Resources were defined as original coal in place, remaining after mining, and currently available considering land-use and technological restrictions. The amount of coal mined from each study area varies depending on the mining practices of the companies operating within the area. Of the three quadrangle investigations, the available resources range from 50 percent to 79 percent of the original resources. Most of the coal resources under deep-minable category were not available because of technologic restrictions, such as insufficient coal thickness.
