The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. Successful collaboration of Owner, Owner’s Engineer, Contractor and Contractor’s Engineer led to a safe and cost-effective design and construction

"Civil design has changed in many ways using BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology in its most recent form. Such a technological breakthrough has not been successful so far in traditional oriented Engineering Geology, except in the Mining and oil exploration markets with budgets on much different scales. The fact is that paper, pencil and hand drawn sketches are still state of the art and a perfectly acceptable way of producing subjective geological interpretations.Using the technology available, we have developed a set of procedures and techniques to combine the latest surveying and remote sensing technology, GIS based tools to manage large data sets and BIM modelling techniques in a 3D geological environment.To demonstrate the concept, the forthcoming Karavanke tunnel project (Slovenia) has been chosen for testing techniques. The project, with its rich documentation from previous phases and new data available, represented a good basis for testing the possibility of digitizing geological data while communicating with Leapfrog Geo 3D modelling algorithms. This type of procedure would then allow engineers at the construction site to use the 3D model for prognosis and evaluation, while upgrading it daily with new information.INTRODUCTIONThe Karavanke tunnel crosses the mountain range on the border between Slovenia and Austria. As the geology is very complex due to its imbricate fan structure, a series of geological – geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations have been performed since the 1970s, resulting in extensive project documentation. The construction of the 7864 m long single-tube two-lane tunnel took place in the late 1980s. Currently, the tunnel represents a critical point on Pan-European Transport Corridor X (Salzburg, Austria – Thessaloniki, Greece), with insufficient safety measures. The need for improved traffic flow and enhanced road safety led the Slovenian government in 2013 to a decision to continue with activities regarding the construction of the second tunnel tube 70 m east of the existing tunnel.The extensive project documentation from previous investigation phases and construction of a new tunnel tube presented a good base for a pilot project, in order to test the emerging new technologies for data acquisition, processing and analysis in a 3D environment. Several products are available on the market for data acquisition and 3D geological modelling, but only a few can be applied in the civil design, as well. Developing a standard format and procedure for implementing the 3D geological model using new remote sensing techniques, 3D geological modelling tools, such as Leapfrog Geo and BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling techniques would move the Engineering Geology, Geotechnics and Tunneling to a more advanced level. 3D modelling tools would therefore not only be used as a visualization tool, but would also contribute to in a more efficient communication and workflow between the professionals involved in the project."

The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

The Telfer Project, Australia's newest, largest and most remote gold mine, treats 480,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 9.33 grams per tonne derived from open pit mining operations. Coarse gold is recovered by gravity concentration with jigs and further upgraded using a continuous strake, table and by amalgamation. Remaining gold is recovered in a cyanide circuit and incorporates flat bottom air agitators, CCD and stellar filters for clarification and precipitate removal. Overall recovery into bullion averages 98 percent. The mill incorporates a number of design features which allow for maximum efficiency and security using a minimum number of operating personnel.

A few years ago, mining conventions, similar to this, around the country sported the theme, "The Survival of Mining." Today, the SME announces that "Mining is Alive." Being part of an industry that is simply alive is not very exciting. We can do better! Our challenge must be to flourish, blossom, maximize our potential and expand our horizons. The pace of rejuvenating this industry is still woefully inadequate. The new generation of mining industry leaders recognizes the urgent need for bold operational changes?changes in the way we deal with our employees? changes in the way we achieve productivity? and changes in the way we reward our employees for productivity.

Maintaining stable high walls can be a challenging task. Complex geological and structural features, alteration zones, rock mass properties, and hydrogeological conditions must be well understood to design a safe mining environment. Economic considerations must also be taken into account as the mine operator must provide ore deliveries and protect reserves. However, even when good engineering practices are followed, and proper blasting and mining techniques are implemented, slope movements may still occur. When these slope instabilities are minor, the mine is often able to continue operations with minimal impacts on safety or production. When these occurrences are excessive and coupled with high rates of movement, a robust monitoring system is crucial to continuing mining activities while protecting personnel. This paper summarizes the approach an open pit mine in Nevada took as excessive and rapid high-wall movement was experienced in an integral area. Creative mining approaches, combined with slope monitoring radar technology, were utilized to maintain safe and successful mining activities despite active movement that exceeded an average velocity of 30 inches per day.

INTRODUCTION The Columbia River Basalt beneath the Hanford Site is one of several rock types being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy for the first commercial high-level nuclear waste repository. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has been carrying out a comprehensive investigation to assess the feasibility of constructing a repository in basalt and to develop technology required for repository engineering and site characterization. Development of a nuclear waste repository requires a number of design considerations not usually necessary in the planning of conventional underground structures. Principal among these is the thermally induced stress field resulting from waste emplacement. This thermal stress, super- imposed on the preexisting in situ- and excavation- induced stress fields, needs to be evaluated in the design process due to the sensitivity of waste emplacement density to this factor. The nature of this thermally induced stress field is dependent on several factors, including the temperature distribution around the repository openings, the thermal properties of the rock mass, and the deformability of the rock mass. Re1iable performance of the repository structure is largely determined by the ability to under- stand the above rock mass characteristics and predict the underground opening response to waste emplacement based on this understanding. To gain an understanding of this rock mass behavior in a repository condition, the BWIP has conducted a large-scale heated block test in basalt at the Near-Surf ace Test Facility (NSTF) on the Hanford Site. This paper presents the results from the elevated temperature phase of the block test in which the thermal, mechanical, and thermo- mechanical response of the closely jointed basalt rock mass was evaluated as a function of stress and loading orientation at varying temperatures up to 200 oC. SITE GEOLOGY The NSTF test areas, including the block test site, are located in the entablature zone of the Pomona basalt f low. The Pomona flow entablature is structurally typical of most flows in the Columbia River Basalt Group in that it is characterized by long, undulating, polygonal columns up to 2.4 m in length. Columns vary from 15 to 30 cm in diameter, averaging about 20 cm. Over their length, columns can vary in dip by 150 to 200. The column structures are dissected by subhorizontal cross joints that are generally discontinuous and seldom cross columnar joint boundaries. Spacing of the cross joints also averages about 20 cm. A representative joint pattern taken from mapping of the tunnel wall near the block test site is shown in figure 1. Application of the Rock Mass Rating System (Bieniawski, l979) to the block test site yielded an overall value of 62. The corresponding value from application of the Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) is 8.7 (Cramer and Kim,1985). The NSTF is approximately 50 m below the surf ace. However, this depth is sti1l above the water table and conditions are generally dry. Interstitial water exists as the result of percolation of meteoric water from the surface.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. INTRODUCTION The Ningyo-toge Mine is located in the western part of Honshu, about 800 km from Tokyo. Since the discovery of uranium ore deposit at Ningyo-toge in 1955, different kinds of mining and milling tests have been carried out. A new pilot plant of milling and UF6 conversion is also being under construction. Operations are scheduled to start by the end of this year. In 1979, the uranium enrichment pilot plant was constructed at Ningyo-toge and test operations have started. Thus, the Ningyo-toge area is assigned to undertake the Research and Development of the upstream of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan. PNC has been strengthening its security measures more than ever. This paper will focus on the disposal of wasted material, especially on the disposal of heap leaching residue, in Japan. URANIUM ORE DEPOSITS The uranium of the Ningyo-toge Mine is characterized genetically by epigenetic sedimentary type deposits. They occur in the host rock of Neogene tertiary fluviatile conglomerates and sandstones which unconformably overlies the Mesozoic-Palaeogene granitic basement covered with lucustrine deposits and volcanic ejecta. More than 12 deposits have been found over the area of approximately 160 km2, and distribution of the deposits are strongly controlled by the so-called channel structure, probably remnants of paleo-streams on the denudation surface of the underlying grantic basement. Each ore body has different shape and dimension respectively, but about 2-3 meters thickness with the average grade of 0.05-0.2% U308 is common feature of the ore bodies. The ore is soft and loose, and it is composed of common rock forming minerals of allogenic origin and their altered products. The chemical composition of the ore depends on the constituents of the country rocks or the pebbles. A primary mineral, ningyoite and secondary mineral, autunite are major ore minerals, although three primary tetravalent minerals and thirteen secondary hexavalent minerals have also been detected. MINING EXPERIMENT Since 1959, various types of underground mining tests have been carried out at Ningyo-toge Mine. The room and pillar method was safe and simple, although the uranium ore recovery was below 70%. After experiment of the retreating long-wall method and slicing mining method, it was found that the modified long wall method was the most appropriate for the underground mining of the Ningyo-toge uranium deposits. This method was completed successfully to increase efficiency up to 2 or 3 times, as compared to conventional methods. MILLING EXPERIMENT In 1964, a small test mill was constructed at Ningyo-toge, and a milling experiment using the Ningyo-toge uranium ore was started. Re-modelling of equipments and improvement of the process lead to the establishment of the technique of the so-called wet process, and produce UF4 directly from the ore. The flow diagram is shown in Fig. 1.

INTRODUCTION Optimization, as measured by productivity gains, is being achieved in our nation's preparation plants principally by automation, economy of scale, and reducing maintenance. Increased tonnage per unit of investment, a1 so a measure of optimization, is being achieved by breaking with tradition and increasing plant utilization, while simultaneously improving on equipment re1iabi1ity. Improved qua1ity, another measure of optimization, is being attained through technical innovation. This review will concentrate on state-of-the- art unit operations and processes, and will not discuss emerging new technologies which are covered in detail in other presentations of this symposium. It is recognized that much of what will be discussed in this paper is not unique to the fine coal circuit, but is equally applicable to the entire preparation plant. However, the areas reviewed are the principal means being used today to optimize an existing preparation plant's fine coal circuit. Prior to designing and optimizing a fine coal cleaning circuit, the question that must first be answered is, "Do we even want a fine coal circuit? This is a much more complex question than is readily apparent, as most of you recognize. It can be argued either way. In the final analysis the "bottom line" will hold (Blackmore, 1982). If your sales contract a1 lows it, and the selling price can justify it, you most assuredly want to build a fine coal circuit into your preparation plant. In general today, most new preparation plants do have fine coal cleaning circuits. The purpose of fine coal cleaning has changed with time. Some of the early applications of fine coal cleaning were to prevent stream pollution rather than to prepare a product for market (Merrill a Pennington, 1962). During the 50's, 60's and into the 70's the principal thrust of fine coal cleaning was in metallurgical coal preparation. More recently, the emphasis of the 80's is on steam coal processing. There is no consensus on what is fine coal. Traditionally, fine coal would be anything below 1/4" in size. Because of the advances being made in intermediate coal cleaning processes, i.e. heavy media cyclones and jig cleaning, this discussion will define fine coal as -28 mesh (Aplan, 1987). Figure 1 is a plot of the size ranges of a large number of U.S. bituminous coals. In general the -28 mesh fraction of a bituminous coal will be between 7% and 18% of the ROM feed with reported ranges of 5% to 40% (Aplan, 1987). Consequently, traditional fine coal cleaning is general 1 y involved with a re1 actively mi nor portion of the coal feed. Every effort is taken both in terms of mining and preparation to keep it that way because of the high cost of cleaning fines. The move away from this posture, namely, the techniques to fine grind coal to liberate pyrite is probably the biggest challenge facing fine coal processing today.

Most mining companies today perform site assessments and operational or compliance audits regularly. The purpose of these audits is to review company facilities and operations to determine whether they comply with applicable federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations. Why Audit? Companies adopt assessment and audit programs for legal and business reasons. The business reasons include: (1) ensuring efficient and cost-effective compliance through early problem identification and resolution; (2) planning and implementing business transactions such as real estate conveyances, loans, mergers and acquisitions, and waste disposal service contracts; and (3) employee training and relations. Legal reasons for audits include: (1) avoiding enforcement actions and penalties; (2) meeting environmental permit certification requirements; (3) avoiding corporate officer liability; and (4) meeting Security and Exchange Commission disclosure requirements. The Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") encourages environmental auditing by regulated entities. The EPA Environmental Auditing Policy Statement was published in the Federal Register on July 9, 1986 (51 Fed Reg 25,004). Although the existence of an auditing program does not create a defense to or otherwise limit a company's regulatory responsibilities, EPA considers compliance programs in setting inspection and enforcement priorities. If a company makes an honest effort to identify and correct its own problems, EPA's enforcement approach is influenced, especially if violations are promptly reported. Perhaps more significant to many executives, the U.S. Department of Justice issued guidelines last year on when it will pursue criminal prosecution for environmental violations. See Department of Justice, "Factors and Decisions on Criminal Prosecutions for Environmental Violations in the Context of Significant Voluntary Compliance or Disclosure Efforts by the Violator," (July 1, 1991). It is now commonplace to read about major companies pleading guilty to criminal violations and paying millions of dollars in penalties. For example ALCOA recently agreed to pay criminal fines and civil penalties totaling $7.5 million for unauthorized excavation of PCB-contaminated soil and improper dumping of spent caustic solution. No executive wants to explain to the Board of Directors or shareholders why the company was criminally indicted. The Department of Justice considers factors such as voluntary disclosure, preventive measures and compliance programs, such as a regular compliance auditing program, the effectiveness of the disciplinary system for employees who violate the company's environmental policies, and subsequent compliance efforts by companies to remedy ongoing noncompliance. The Department of Justice looks closely at whether audit recommendations were implemented in a timely way and whether environmental compliance was a standard by which employees were judged. The Lawyer's Role. The role of the lawyer in an audit team deserves special attention. When enforcement action or litigation has begun or is contemplated or a government agency has asked for information, attorneys always should be directly involved in environmental audits. In most situations, however, environmental audits are management tools, and the attorney's role should be to advise the team. The attorney can help make sure the team understands the laws and regulations the facility must

Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. "INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

"The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

Despite ongoing digitization and “hardware” technological advances, geotechnical uncertainty remains the most significant risk in underground and tunnel construction. And, whilst they are commonly held up as an example of the sophistication of the industry, the practice of drafting and using geotechnical baseline reports is subject to a wide range of influences, not all of which support good risk management. Uncertainties in predicting ground behavior, the gap between the pre-construction assumptions, and the systemic response to construction remains a significant technical and communication challenge. Accordingly, this paper presents a framework to quantify geotechnical uncertainty using geostatistics and translate these into practical tools for ground risk management throughout planning, procurement and construction. Adopting even some of the principles of this framework should provide improvements to contract risk management and should assist to minimize the potential for commercial losses.

What is the most economical way of tunneling in mixed ground that may experience high pressures? Non-continuously pressurized, mixed ground Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized to deal with a wide range of geology. Continuous improvements in these mixed ground machines allow for ever-increasing efficiency and reduction of project risk due to unexpected conditions. We will explore the performance of recent mixed ground machines throughout the world and then look at how new improvements to mixed ground machines will enable excavation of an expanded range of ground conditions. These conditions include mixed ground with low fines, mixed face rock, and fracture/fault zones with high pressures where in the past a Slurry TBM may have been utilized.

Tunnels are frequently specified by owners to be designed to a structural code, often a bridge code. In the USA, AASHTO have created a tunnel code, based on structural principles, the AASHTO LRFD Tunnel Design Specification. The Load Resistance Factor Design method (LRFD) described in the AASHTO title is an approximation to the probabilistic design of structures, based on the independence of load and resistance. This methodology is well known to be problematic in geotechnical design, but it is widely used. The paper considers the difficulties of this approach and describes alternative approaches that would result in more appropriate designs for tunnels.

The Open Pit Mine Production Scheduling Problem (OPMPSP) is a complex optimization problem that seeks to determine the best sequence for extracting mineralized material from the ground in order to maximize the Net Present Value (NPV). This process must take into account various capacity constraints, such as mining rates, processing limits, stockpiling capacities, blending requirements, and precedence constraints, which dictate the order in which blocks can be extracted. Traditionally, the OPMPSP has been formulated as a mixed integer programming problem, employing binary and continuous variables to represent the extraction of each block. However, this approach has limitations, particularly when it comes to addressing the stockpiling issue. In response, some researchers have proposed mathematical models, which offer a more accurate representation of the problem but come with their own set of challenges. In this study, an alternative approach to tackle the OPMPSP with stockpiling by employing constraint programming (CP) is explored. The method was carefully tested on the Newman1 dataset from the well-known Minelib library. The results show that the CP-based model obtained a production schedule having about 2.69 % higher NPV than the NPV of the solution, which is recorded in the Minelib Library.
