The problem of assessing uncertainty in grade estimates has been a topic of research and debate since kriging was first introduced. Use of the kriging variance was originally touted as all that was necessary in order to produce confidence limits for grade estimates. Since then the prudence of using the kriging variance for confidence interval estimation has been questioned, and techniques such as the jackknife and conditional simulation have been proposed to develop "true" interval estimates. This paper compares the differences between interval estimates produced by the three methods and makes conclusions about the performance of confidence intervals produced by the different methods.

Acid consumption in copper heap leaching is determined by the minerals present in the ore. Gangue minerals such as biotite and chlorite consume acid together with copper-bearing minerals such as chrysocolla and malachite. Acid consumption is affected by the rate of acid application and the particle size. Some gangue minerals undergo alterations and cause precipitate formation during acid leaching. Other minerals form due to precipitation as dissolved ion concentrations from a variety of mineral sources combine to exceed saturation levels. Copper recovery is related to all of these events. This study presents information on acid consumption of various gangue minerals as well as data for copper recovery from an associated copper ore.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the roles of cement and concrete in construction in general and, more specifically, as construction materials of the Southeast. For purpose of this discussion, the Southeast will include the geographic area composed. of the following 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In one sense, cement by itself is not a construction material. It is a finely ground manufactured mineral product, usually gray in color. Cement is mixed with water and sand, gravel, crushed stone, or other aggregate to form concrete, the rock-like substance that is the most widely used construction material in the world. Because cement is seldom used by itself for construction but is usually a component of concrete, there is no such thing. as a "cement" sidewalk, a "cement" highway, or "cement" building. Neither is "portland" a brand name. It is a generic term used to describe any cement that hardens in the presence of water and is made to standard specifications .. For all practical construction purposes, therefore, all cement is "portland." The name "port-land" was selected by the English inventor of the product in 1824 because concrete made with his product resembled natural building stone quarried on Portland, an English island. Although portland cement is not the final material which finds its way into completed construction, as the principal component of the most widely used construction material in the world, the location and process of its manufacture warrant some discussion

Refdist is a simple but valid approach to planning or analyzing a test-vs-control plant trial that uses accumulated plant performance data to calculate objective criteria for judging the trial outcome. Refdist calculations and results are explained and illustrated with data typical of the mining industry. Findings from a simulation study of Refdist statistical properties are reported. Suggestions for dealing with messy data situations are offered.

Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

The growing demand and a diminishing supply of conventional crude oil in North America are bringing about an ever increasing interest in the so-called "synthetic fuels". With one commercial plant already in full production, another in the planning and engineering stage, and still others being seriously considered, the Athabasca tar sands is proving to be a leading center of interest. Here, and in the closely related deposits, reserves in place total over 700 billion barrels.1 This major source of new oil is about ready to play a significant role in the filling of ever increasing market demand. When and if fully developed, the Athabasca tat sands could make both Canada and the United States substantially independent of all off-shore supplies of crude for many years to come. Its product, a high-quality, low-sulphur synthetic crude, is beginning to enter the market place at a most favourable time.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

The Missouri River Intake Screen Structure and Tunnel (MRISST) is one phase of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP), a vital piece of infrastructure in the state of North Dakota to transport water to drought-laden communities in the eastern half of the state. The scope of work consists of constructing a cofferdam in the Missouri River, mining a 1,600-foot by 74-inch tunnel from a secant pile shaft near the riverbank into a cofferdam, and erecting a 40-foot Y-shaped vertical pipe structure in the cofferdam to support the intake screens. Construction personnel worked in the river through the North Dakota winter to construct the cofferdam and contended with high hydrostatic pressures and raveling sands, gravels, cobbles and boulders while mining the tunnel. Diligent planning and meticulous execution were essential to overcoming the challenges encountered below the Missouri River.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. Soft ground tunneling poses major challenges to the underground industry. Most of soft ground tunnels are in highly urbanized areas, often include limited cover, and include a strong trend of increasing diameters. Therefore, soft ground tunneling works can sometimes cause inevitable ground movements and settlements that may lead to damages to adjacent buildings, roads, structures or utilities; many of these being “lifeline” infrastructure assets. Tunneling operations, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) advance rates, and face pressure control can significantly increase or decrease such risks, depending on how well the TBM and operational parameters are applied to the ground conditions. Additionally, the risks of impacting existing infrastructure are heightened in many parts of North America because of cobbles and boulders. To date there is no standardized guideline that determines appropriate tunneling rates nor operator’s guidelines, to ensure safe tunnelling in soft ground. The paper analyzes tunneling records from completed soft ground tunnels to determine a relation between ground conditions, tunnel cover, TBM cutters maintenance and TBM advance rates. The records are discussed to draw several mitigation measures to be adopted during tunnelling, to reduce risks of settlements, over excavation or sinkholes.

Technological advances in mine equipment and milling processes have enabled mining companies to exploit ever lower grades of ore. The result has been larger disturbances, greater volumes of waste, a complex web of infrastructure, and an overall trend towards mega-projects that can extend over several square kilometers. This explosive growth in a mining operation’s disturbance footprint provokes an obvious question: What’s it going to cost to reclaim all of this? At face value, this can be an enormous financial liability for a company, but since the timing of reclamation may be years in the future for many operations, these costs can be heavily discounted thereby limiting the burden on the corporate balance sheet. Nonetheless, mining companies are eager to remove these liabilities as quickly as possible, conversely, regulators want assurance reclamation will, in fact, occur. How might one bridge these competing interests? Navigating the practical and financial requirements of a post-closure landscape requires foresight, judgement and assumptions, however, companies who do not adequately plan for these future expenditures when there is no off-setting income stream will likely face some difficult decisions. Simple risk analysis tools and utilizing the time value of money can help bring some clarity to this end-of-mine life phase.

In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

The advanced cryogenic treatment is a post-manufacturing metallurgical process that involves subjecting off-theshelf materials to extremely low temperatures, significantly improving wear resistance and reliability. These case studies explore whether the claims of Enrich Bits & Tools benefit metals and their specific in-field application to drill bits in the blasting industry. This paper reviews the application of the treatment to button drill bits for enhanced wear resistance in two operations. The first is a civil construction project with highly abrasive rock. To confirm the remarkable benefits of the treatment, a second case study was performed. This case study utilized measure-while-drilling technology in consistent rock characteristics to reduce variables in the field study.

The paper’s intent is to evaluate pumpable foamed cementitious mine seal material by determining the shear strength of a generic foamed cement in the laboratory. The tests were conducted on three scales: small-size specimens, consisting of cylinders 4 in. in diameter or 3-in. prisms; double shear medium- size specimens, measuring 13 in. by 10 in.; and large-size specimens, measuring 6 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. The small-specimen shear tests resulted in average peak and residual shear strengths of 128 psi and 56 psi, respectively. These values are fairly consistent with published shear strengths of foamed cementitious material. However, the other two types of shear tests did not achieve the shear strength of a typical pumpable foamed cementitous mine seal material. Based on the test results, the paper concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strengths, approximately 20 psi, determined from small laboratory-scale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface, and not be based on their peak strengths.

Compagnie Minière Espérance mines a primary gold orebody in an openpit. The ore is processed through crushing, primary gravity concentration, grinding and secondary gravity separation, generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analysis of the material in the pond has indicated a residual gold grade sufficient to justify a chemical treatment process to recover the gold. However, direct cyanidation would require a prohibitively large installation for the site, which is located in a remote rainforest environment. It was decided to test the feasibility of preconcentration using flotation. As lab tests proved up the technical feasibility of the flotation process, an on-site pilot operation was carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for industrial circuit sizing. Data collected during the pilot campaign was used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM? PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain an acceptable fine gold recovery from a small amount of concentrate.

"The use of gas, temperature and airflow sensors to monitor mine ventilation atmospheres offers numerous safety and operational bene-fits to mines. Detection of dangerous gases, changes to airflows and temperature variations are some of the obvious benefits of using at-mospheric sensors in mines. The prediction of atmospheric conditions between sensors however is potentially difficult, and gaining full cover-age a mine will require either many sensors or a method of extrapolat-ing and predicting atmospheric conditions between and downstream from a sparser array of sensors. A dynamic simulation computer model technique is demonstrated to predict time based changes to atmosphere conditions downstream from sensors. The dynamic model predicts the time based changes to conditions throughout a mine model by simulating the mixing, addition and dilution of gases and airflow changes in incremental time steps. The advantages of this method is that a real time overview of full mine atmospheric conditions can be viewed at all locations, even areas without sensors. In addition, with careful planning and consideration of potential contaminant sources, the number of required sensors can be minimized. INTRODUCTIONMine Ventilation Sensors The importance of continuously monitoring mine atmospheres has been recognised since mining underground began and the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would take canaries underground with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane (Figure 1). The canary, normally a very songful bird, would become agitated, stop singing and eventually die if not removed from these gases, signalling the miners to quickly exit the mine (Davalle, 2011)."

Calcium-based scale precipitation is a common problem in mill reclaim waters. An accumulation of these adherent deposits can result in a rapid reduction in water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in ore production. Heap leach applications can also experience the added problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon columns when scale control is not maintained. The primary cause of scaling in precious metal recovery is the relative insolubility of calcium carbonate. The presence of the calcium ion and bicarbonate alkalinity is common in almost every water source. If the temperature or pH of the water is allowed to increase, the bicarbonate breaks down to carbonate and combines with calcium by the following reaction: Ca +2 +2HCO3 ? CaCO3 + H2 + CO2

The United States Forest Service, as a land managing agency, is responsible for the surface administration of National Forest lands. The basic objectives of management are protection and utilization of renewable resources such as water, forage, timber, wildlife, recreation, and clean air. Much of the National Forest land in this country is open to mineral prospecting and development. When large de-posits of minerals are extracted from the forest environment, especially by surface methods, there are oftentimes conflicts between accepted mining methods and the objectives of other resource management goals. Such is the situation in Southeast Idaho where several members of the phosphate industry are operating on and adjacent to the Caribou National Forest. In 1966, the phosphate industry and the Caribou National Forest became mutually concerned with the problems of rehabilitating mined areas and minimizing potential damage to adjacent forest areas. A Cooperative Administrative Study was initiated with industry supporting the Forest Service financially and with equipment, material, and manpower, as well as interest and enthusiasm. The objectives of the study are to provide basic, applicable information pertinent to: 1. Protecting the quality of water emanating from mined water-sheds. 2. Providing for soil stabilization on mined areas. 3. Returning mined areas to surface resource production. 4. The feasibility of making mined areas esthetically acceptable. It was concluded that the following separate--yet intergrated--fields should be studied in order to obtain the desired information:

The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.
