The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

"Construction of large facilities underground in urban areas has many advantages. In order to show the advantages, a case study of the Norsborg metro depot in Stockholm Sweden has been made. The Norsborg metro depot will be the largest and most modern underground metro depot in northern Europe. The depot has been built in hard rock in an urban area with small impact on the environment and local residents. The paper describes how it is possible to build underground facilities in a cost efficient way and take care of the challenges regarding working environment that comes with locating a permanent working place underground. INTRODUCTION The Stockholm area is one of the five fastest growing regions in Europe and home to more than a fifth of Sweden's population on just two percent of Sweden's surface. The population is growing rapidly, with about 35,000 people per year and is expected to reach 2.6 million in 2030. In order to meet the development and enable continued growth, housing projects and expansion of infrastructure need to keep the same pace; this is an easy conclusion to make but much more difficult to realize in practice. The main challenge is to accomplish development in a sustainable and efficient manner, minimizing the use of resources and land. By constructing facilities underground more urban space will be made available for development and/or for greening of city centers. Considering sustainability factors such as land value in decision making for placing of structures or facilities, underground locations could become a first choice alternative. During 2015 and 2016, several major underground infrastructure projects in the city of Stockholm will start, including a 14 km sewage tunnel and an 18 km by-pass highway tunnel. Furthermore the Stockholm metro system is currently undergoing the largest expansion since the 1970’s, a 19 kilometers extension of the metro system including new trains and new stations is planned. During 2013 - 2015 Skanska Sweden took part in the construction of a new metro depot placed underground in the southern part of Stockholm; the Norsborg metro depot. This is a top modern urban underground facility that in 2017 will serve as depot for 17 new metro trains. The project was selected for “Outstanding Project of The Year” at the ITA Tunneling Awards 2015."

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

Introduction Caverns of 50 m in linear dimension at depths below 2300 m with a life of more than 25 years are proposed for the next generation of water-filled neutrino detectors. Little precedent exists for excavations in such an extreme environment, although some guidance is available from mining experience at great depths, for example, in South Africa, in Canada and at the former Homestake Mine in the U.S.A. Unlike mining for ore, there are choices available in the construction of such caverns that may mean the difference between success and failure. These choices should be informed by rock engineering principles. Recently proposed guidelines for orientation of brick-shaped caverns where the long dimension is a small multiple of the short dimension indicate that the most favorable orientation is with the long and short dimensions parallel to major and minor preexcavation principal stresses (Pariseau, 2005). Numerical analyses at reduced strength indicate some yielding at cavern walls should be expected but that an equilibrium state is quite possible and is aided by arching the back into a spherical dome when the cavern is an empty cylinder (Tesarik and others, 2002). The same indications of stability occur with brick-shaped caverns. However, the most dangerous situation occurs during the excavation sequence to final cavern dimensions. There are any number of excavation sequences that lead to the same final cavern shape, so there is an opportunity to partially optimize the sequence with construction guidelines that minimize peak stress concentrations during construction. This contribution discusses three practical excavation sequences that lead to the same brick-shaped cavern in the strong, massive Yates formation at the Homestake Mine where considerable rock mechanics data has accumulated through the years(e.g., Pariseau, 1985, Pariseau and others, 1995) and where actual mining on the 8000 Level indicates a strong possibility of successful investment in the next generation of large, deep neutrino detectors. The main results are: (1) a favorable brick-shape is one with dimensions in the same proportion as the preexcavation principal stresses (compressionpositive), and (2) favorable orientation of the most extreme but temporary shape of excavation is also best for the construction sequence. Analysis results from a mix of Homestake Mine data and possible excavation geometry illustrate the advantages of these guidelines.

Development of the Batu Hijau copper project was completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the formal handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The project began in August 1996 when the owner, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for the development of the project. This included a copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and the procurement of the mine equipment. In 1996, Batu Hijau was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Developing the Batu Hijau Mine was complex. It involved the work of thousands of people in all parts of the world to plan, engineer, procure, fabricate and manufacture equipment, supply and deliver materials and equipment, and build the plant.

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. As part of the Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA, work was completed at the Pine Street Stub Tunnel (PSST) in early 2007 for the Central Link project. This tunnel was excavated using cut-and-cover construction within the limits of Pine Street. The stub tunnel provides a turn back via double crossover for light rail trains running in the Downtown Transit Tunnel (DTT), as well as a connection point for the next phase of the project, the University Link (Fig. 1). Designing the new University Link tunnel connection to the existing PSST was a tricky task. The on-site geotechnical conditions, buried obstructions, geometry, requirements for construction and balancing operational considerations and neighborhood stakeholder concerns associated with the recently completed PSST combined to create a uniquely challenging assignment.

A cooperative study was undertaken by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry, and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining in a neutral atmosphere before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried non-ferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environ-mentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environ-mental issues that will need continued deliberation before resolution, and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

The mine scheduling process defines a mining sequence across the life of the mine and stipulates the amount of ore, waste, and specific blocks to be mined each year so that the highest economic return can be obtained under a number of constraints. There are a number of mine scheduling software packages available. Each claims to be the best scheduler by maximizing Net Present Value (NPV) or by minimizing overall mining costs. These mine scheduling programs follow different procedures and scheduling philosophies based on either mathematical or heuristic principles. There was no study in which the mine production scheduling procedures applied by these packages were discussed and compared. This paper evaluates four open pit mine scheduling programs recently developed and compares them in order to determine if significant differences exist among them. The same input data, which consist of a 3-D block model, an economic set of parameters, and the initial surface topography for a operating copper mine in Southern Peru, was used to test each technique. The following programs were investigated with respect to their ability to optimize the NPV for the case study. 1) M821V1 Scheduler by Mintec; 2) NPV Scheduler by Earthworks; 3) Milawa Scheduler by Whittle Programming; and, 4) Fundamental Tree Scheduling Method (FTSM) developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The results from this case study demonstrate that the scheduling software packages, Mintec, Earthworks, and Whittle obtained similar NPV’s, while FTSM scheduler gave a six percent higher NPV than the other schedulers.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

In 1974, Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited started a 48 million dollar expansion programme at their property in Bathurst, New Brunswick. A portion of the expansion plans includes a 26 foot diameter 4,525 foot deep shaft, underground crusher and conveyor excavations and lower level access development. J. S. Redpath Limited was awarded the contract for the new shaft and associated rock work in May 1974. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited, a member of the Noranda Group, operate this 10,000 ton per day lead, zinc, copper plant with proven reserves in excess of 90 million tons. While most of the ore is provided by the underground operation at the Number 12 ore body, some tonnage is produced from the open pit at the Number 6 ore body. Long range plans indicate a phasing out of the open pit and an increase in production from the underground operation. Existing facilities at the underground mine could not provide additional tonnage, thus the requirement for a new shaft. (Figure 1) The new shaft will also provide access to ore below the 2,800 level which is currently the bottom level of the existing facility. The contract called for sinking a 26 foot inside diameter, nine compartment concrete shaft 4,525 feet deep (Figure 2). Station access and ramp development from existing workings would be required to the bottom of the new shaft. In addition, development work for new crushing and conveying facilities was needed simultaneous with the shaft sinking.

Yucca Mountain Overview The U.S. Department of Energy?s Yucca Mountain Project is a geologic repository project designed to receive, handle, package, transport, and emplace spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. The planned repository would be located in Yucca Mountain on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and would include both surface and subsurface areas. Yucca Mountain rock formations consist of successive layers of volcanic rocks (called tuffs) approximately 14 to 11.5 million years old, formed by eruptions of volcanic calderas to the north. With the volcanic rock the potential for methane emission is not an issue and the subsurface repository is a non-gassy (methane) classification. This paper will provide a summary of the development ventilation system design that provides fresh air for subsurface construction activities, and the emplacement ventilation system design that removes heat generated by the waste packages. The subsurface layout, illustrated in Figure 1, contains 108 emplacement drifts, one Performance Confirmation(PC) observation drift, nine intake/exhaust shafts, and three access ramps. The existing Yucca Mountain facilities, shown in bold lines in Figure 1, include a 7.8 km long, 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter U shaped tunnel that is formed by the North and South Ramps at both ends of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) drift and a 1.5 km long, 5.0 m (16.4 ft) diameter Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block drift (ECRB) that were constructed from 1994 through 1998. These drifts were used for site characterization activities and have been incorporated into the subsurface repository configuration. The unexcavated perimeter access main and exhaust main drifts are typically 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter TBM excavations and the emplacement drifts are 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM excavations. The turnouts leading into the emplacement drifts are to be excavated by either mechanical, or drill and blast methods and serve as the launch chambers for the emplacement drift TBM excavations.

Despite low commodity prices and mining industry cutbacks throughout the world, Peru remains one of the industry’s bright spots. The country’s remarkable economic turnaround during the 1990s remains a model for other developing nations to follow. And the Peruvian government has not forgotten the industry that was instrumental in that turnaround. True, the country has not been spared the effects of the mining industry’s retrenchment that has occurred in other parts of the world. However, foreign mining companies remain committed to doing business in Peru. And the government remains committed to attracting foreign investment and maintaining a strong mining industry. This commitment was evident in September 1999during the 24th Convention of the Institutos de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru in Arequipa, Peru. More than 3,000 mining industry professionals from around the world attended the convention. And Extemin, the accompanying exhibit, featured more than 450 companies, many from the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and other countries.

The Los Angeles Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension (MGLEE) extends Metro’s light rail system to the densely populated and growing East Los Angeles communities. Much of the 6 mile alignment consists of at-grade track, but the project also features a1.7 mile underground segment in cut-and-cover and twin-bored tunnel structures. In light of past experiences with open shield construction, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) specified, for the first time, use of Pressure Face Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM’s) to advance tunnels through soft ground. This paper describes the history of the tunnel design, construction management, and construction methods adopted that resulted in successfully completing the tunneling segment.

Field tests concerning a fog mesh method for fog removal are discussed. The first tests were performed at the Pyhäsalmi Mine, Finland. As this study gave promising results, further studies were completed at the Orivesi Mine. The results of these most recent field tests are presented and the two studies are compared. The Orivesi test set consisted of four materials. These included air filter fabric, fibrous filter fabric, a plastic greenhouse mesh, and an aluminium mosquito net. The variation of the Orivesi results was more noticeable than what was found previously. The best fog removal effect of all tests was achieved with the aluminium mosquito net, while the plastic green-house mesh performed worst. The humidity reduction by aluminium net was more profound than any of its precedents. More mesh materials will be tested in the near future.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

The California High Speed Rail Authority (Authority) was created by the State of California through legislation in 1996. The purpose of the Authority is to plan, construct, finance and operate a statewide intercity high speed passenger rail system. In 2004 the Authority prepared a programmatic level environmental document in compliance with the California Environmental Quality and National Environmental Protection Acts (CEQA and NEPA).The Authority and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) were the lead agencies overseeing the development of the environmental documentation. The resulting document includes two volumes and 64 supplemental technical reports analyzing the transportation needs for California and the selection of an approach to meeting the project transportation needs. The Programmatic Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) identified High Speed Rail as the most environ-mentally protective, sustainable and economical approach to meeting the state?s projected transportation needs.

Pillar collapses are events that due to their severe consequences can be classified as high risk. The design of pillars in underground room-and-pillar operations should migrate to risk-based design approaches. The authors of this work proposed a risk-based pillar design methodology that integrates stochastic discrete element modeling for pillar strength estimation, and stochastic finite volume modeling (FVM) for stress estimation. This paper focuses on the stochastic FVM component for stress estimation. The mining and geomechanical aspects of a case study mine (CSM) are described and pillar stresses are estimated by using three approaches: (1) analytical solutions, (2) 2D finite element modeling, and (3) 3D finite volume modeling. This operation extracts a 30° dipping deposit, which makes current underground stone mine design guidelines inapplicable for this CSM. This work compares results from each stress estimation approach and discusses uses the point estimate method as a simplified stochastic approach to evaluate the effect of rock mass elastic properties variability on pillar stress distribution. Results from this work show that the three estimation approaches lead to different estimations, possibly, due to the wide range of assumptions each estimation approach considers. It was also determined that the horizontal to vertical stress ratio has a significant impact on pillar stress magnitude. Therefore, it is recommended to perform in situ stress measurements, or assume worst-case-scenario values to account and reduce uncertainty due to this parameter.
