New or improved technology will continue to drive productivity improvements through the next decade. In January 1988, I presented a paper titled, "Large Underground Mines of the 1990s? before the SME. I will follow some of the themes developed in that paper as modified by our experience in the past two years. In order for a coal company to be profitable today, it has had to reduce unit costs experienced in the past. This is because the current average realization, even accounting for a recent strengthening, remains below that of a few years ago. Doing business as was done in the past is not good enough. The coal industry needs to increase productivity in the range of 5-10% annually merely to stay even with rising costs. Underground productivity has been increasing more rapidly than that for surface mining. With the exception of the Powder River basin of Montana and Wyoming, underground productivity has caught up with that for surface mining in many regions of America. There are a number of technological factors which have attributed to increases in underground productivity and which should be factors in the future.

When BHP Copper's Lower Kalamazoo Project commenced production in January 1997, two of the four original hoists had been converted to hoist ore from the Lower K level. Conversions on these hoists not only allowed hoisting from a much deeper level, but also created a higher hoisting efficiency and higher capacity as well. Conversions included new drums, new cables, SCR drives and other solid state control technologies not available when the original hoists were installed. Two of the original hoists were installed in the 1950's and the other two were installed in the 1970's.

Over a considerable period of time great interest has been shown in selective dry concentration of fine ferromagnetic particles, although it is only recently that new permanent magnetic materials have been made available to permit building of such permanent magnetic separators. It is well known that the conventional drum separator does' not efficiently separate fine materials. The centrifugal force on any drum acts in accordance with the particle size and gravity, which may beat varying magnitude-.opposite to the magnetic force, especially when the material is not closely sized. The Magnetic-Mechanical Separator (MMS) is designed for the concentration of fine, unsized magnetic materials where the percentage composition of magnetics to nonmagnetics, or the nature and texture of the materials, is such that its unique agitation and shake-out action with no centrifugal force provides greater efficiency than is obtainable by conventional magnetic separation equipment. This machine consists of a complete double belt conveyor unit with a premagnetizing Axial Pole Agitating Pulley at the feeding end of the lower conveyor belt and a special agitating concentrator magnet above the lower belt of the upper conveyor.

"Each January, tunneling and underground professionals gather in New York City for the George A. Fox Conference. The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."

Carbon dioxide capture from coal-fired power plant flue gas and subsequent sequestration is expected to play a vital role in mitigating global climate change. To meet the growing need for CO2 capture Technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and Utilization. We have successfully converted CO2 into oxalic acid using an electrochemical approach. If oxalic acid can be produced in bulk from CO2, it can be used to leach rare earth minerals at low cost. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. In this paper, we will present an idea of how the factors mentioned above will effect the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to Oxalic acid. INTRODUCTION. CO2 is thermodynamically quite stable, as shown by its highly negative heat of formation. Thus, it is expected that the formation of any useful chemical from CO2 will require the input of at least as much energy as geological sequestration. However, to be more effective the resulting economic value of the chemical need only pass the cost of the additional energy required beyond geological sequestration. This lends itself to two extremes: one where the quantity of energy required is low and one where the economic value of the additional energy is low. It is expected that CO2 can be reduced via electrolysis to several compounds. Of particular interest are formic acid, oxalic acid, methanol, ethanol, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide (as a component to syn-gas). These chemicals have been reported as electrolytic products previously in literature and have considerable potential for application. EXPERIMENTAL Electrocatalytic Production of Oxalate from CO2 We are using membrane electrolysis cell to produce oxalate from CO2. A membrane electrolysis cell is a 2-chamber electrolysis cell where the chambers are separated by a selectively permeable membrane. To produce oxalate, a cation exchange membrane (which selectively exchanges cations) was used. Previous literature suggests that in the cathode chamber an organic electrolyte, such as tetraethylammonium perchlorate or tetraethylammonium bromide in dimethylformamide, are preferred3. In the anode chamber, a sodium hydroxide solution water is used. Carbon dioxide is then bubbled into the cathode chamber as a current is applied.

Block cutter machines have been extensively used in natural stone industry, which is a sub-section of mining industry. In this study, the costs occurring in plate losses cut from Bilecik beige marble with a circular saw block cutter machine have been predicted using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques. One of SPC techniques is Shewhart control charts such as mean control chart. These charts have been efficiently at determining the plate losses. The costs occurring in plate losses have been calculated by using the result of Shewhart control chart. Finally, this study presents the necessity and usefulness of SPC techniques in assessment of natural stone industry.

History Leaching of sulfide ore was first attempted by the Phelps Dodge Corporation about 1900 at Bisbee, Arizona, when Dr. James Douglas conducted experiments in an attempt to apply the leaching techniques then in use at Rio Tinto, Spain. Although this initital attempt was unsuccessful, research work was continued which culminated in successful leaching operations at Tyrone, New Mexico, in 1917 and at Bisbee beginning in 1920. Leaching has continued intermittently since that date, with material from the Lavender Pit being leached today. The Lavender Pit Leach Dump Stripping for the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, with mining operations on stream in 1954 and continuing to the present. All material removed from the pit has been classified as waste, leach material, milling ore, or direct smelting ore, depending upon grade and degree of oxidation. Lavender Pit leach material has been stockpiled in a single dump, called No. 7 Dump. This dump covers an area of approximately 135 acres and average about 300 feet in height. The dump has been deposited over a period of 20 years by truck haulage and contains several layers, each of which has a permeable boulder layer at the bottom and a compacted layer at the top. Leaching of Lavender Pit material was started in 1956 and has proceeded simultaneously with dump construction. Former leach pond areas and haulage surfaces have been ripped with D-9 tractors before deposition of succeeding layers of ore.

In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

Dr. Emrick, honored guests, distinguished speakers, ladies and gentlemen, I am Langan Swent, Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety and Health, of Homestake Mining Company. Today, I appear on behalf of the American Mining Congress, as chairman of its uranium mine health subcommittee. The American Mining Congress is a trade association of several hundred members, which include the producers of a large proportion of the nation's uranium. I've been asked to make a statement of principles for the uranium industry. There are two types of principles that apply to industry in general, and specifically to the uranium industry. Some have external origins and apply regardless of what industry does or thinks. Others are generated by industry itself and serve as goals for the industry. I'll discuss some of each type. I'll limit my statement to those principles related to the subject of this conference--radiation hazards in mining. I won't take your time trying to explain some of the unrelated principles that we must all contend with, such as Parkinson's Laws, Murphy's Law, and the Peter Principle. First and foremost, industry has a sincere interest in the well-being and health of its employees. There are two basic reasons for this. One is a basic respect for human lives, especially those of people we see and work with every day. No one in management wants to carry the lifelong burden of blame for a life lost due to poor working conditions. Most uranium and other mining is done in small communities. Production workers, maintenance workers, service workers, shift bosses, foremen, superintendents and managers all live in the same community. They attend the same churches. They serve together in civic activities. Their children go to the same schools. If one employee in such a community loses his life due to poor working conditions, those remaining know in a daily and intimate way the resulting personal tragedy, usually of a bereaved widow and fatherless children. This sad experience makes the community, including industry management, intensely sensitive to the need for maintaining good working conditions in the mines. But what about the segment of industry that does not live in the mining communities? Corporate and owner's offices are frequently hundreds of miles from the communities where the mining takes place. Many of these people are not personally acquainted with the workers, and there are few close personal ties between the two communities. The distant staff are, however, still human beings and motivated by the same basic human respect for life. Mr. Manuel Gomez of MSHA and a member of the planning committee for this conference summed this point up expressively when he told me: "No one group has a corner on compassion." In addition to compassion, there is another factor. In both communities the basic assignment to everyone is to produce profits. In carrying out this assignment, supervisory and management people are acutely aware of the high cost of illnesses and accidents. Their objective of maximizing profits is advanced significantly by minimizing illnesses and accidents at the mines. A business that has illnesses and accidents generally suffers from poor employee morale and high employee turnover, both of which detract from profits. Next, I would like to talk about what industry has done in the field that is the subject of this conference. We have worked at all sorts of methods to reduce exposure of employees since the exposure standards were first introduced and then lowered. Other speakers will go into details of technology, and I'll simply comment on exposure results. These are best shown in Table 1. The table shows the average WL to which miners in U.S. underground uranium mines have been exposed since 1937 through 1980. The trend of decreasing radon daughter concentrations throughout the period is obvious. Figure 1 presents this data graphically and shows the trend at a glance. This record begins in 1937 when uranium, as such, really wasn't being mined or sought. The concentrations given by the U.S. Public Health Service were for a few small vanadium mines which carried uranium as a by-product. A few years later, when the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb was begun, these mines became the first U.S. uranium mines and the vanadium became the by-product! The radiation hazard then also received attention and the average concentrations began to decline. As knowledge of the reality of the hazard spread, conditions improved. The search for uranium in the U.S. turned up new and larger ore bodies that had to be mined by large underground mines. These mines involved ventilation planning from the beginning, and when they came into production in the late 1950's they lowered the average concentrations greatly. Then in 1960 the American Standards Association adopted a standard setting 1 working level as a satisfactory condition, and several action levels up to 10WL, at which point removal of people from exposure was called for. As a result of the uranium producing states governors' conference in December 1960, state mine inspection agencies, in the early 1960's, began to adopt and enforce the ASA standards. As a result, average concentrations again declined. In 1967, the Federal Radiation Council recommended an annual limitation of 12 WLM per individual. How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

"Replacing the century old rail tunnels that run beneath the Hudson River and carry about 200,000 passengers per day between New York to New Jersey has been a high priority for many years. But after Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast of the United States in 2012, the urgency to replace the tunnels increased dramatically. The Hudson Tunnels project is one of nine projects that make up the larger $30 billion Gateway Project. The Gateway Project has been called the most urgent infrastructure program in the country and the Hudson Tunnels is the most critical part of the project, as it will build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rebuild the existing and deteriorating North River Tunnel that connects New York and New Jersey.“Superstorm Sandy proved the level of resiliency of the tunnels, which was not very good,” Amtrak deputy chief engineer structures James Richter told attendees of the George A. Fox Conference in New York City on Jan. 23. Age and corrosive salts deposited by flood waters from the storm in 2012 have affected interior concrete and copper wiring in the tunnels. “Since then, things have been deteriorating and getting less reliable.”Richter, along with Mohammed Nasim, senior director engineering design, both with Amtrak, spoke at the 2018 George A. Fox Conference where more than 350 tunneling and underground construction professionals attended the conference at the Graduate Center of the City University if New York to share insights about the complexities many of them face on daily basis.Under the theme of “Managing construction of complex underground projects: Strategies for tunneling in populated areas,” the one-day conference featured presentations from some of the top minds in the tunneling and underground construction industry. The presentations touched on everything from the highly technical challenges of constructing tunnels through changing geology while working beneath cities and rivers, to navigating the complex financial issues and contracts that come with the projects that have many stakeholders.All of those challenges, and more are part of the Hudson Tunnels project. It is one of the best examples of the full complexities of a complex tunnel project, with the added pressure of securing funding from state and federal government entities under an increasingly tight deadline."

Through the early 1980's, surveying at Bingham Canyon required a great deal of repetitive and manual work. The advent of total station surveying equipment provided an opportunity to improve the speed and accuracy of surveying work while reducing manpower needs. An evaluation of total station systems and their ability to meet the surveying requirements of Bingham Canyon culminated in the purchase of a total station system as the mine re-opened in 1986. This paper presents the procedure for evaluating, implementing and using the total station survey system at Bingham Canyon.

Powell Bend Mine, located in Bastrop County, Texas, is owned by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The mine is operated under contract by the Powell Bend Mining Company (PBHC), an affiliate of Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co., and produces 210,000 tons of 6500 BTU/LB lignite per year for LCRA's Fayette Power Project near La Grange, Texas. PBHC operates the surface strip mine one shift per day, five days per week with a total of nine employees; six operations/maintenance and three office/supervision. The mine's productivity in 1988 averaged 100.3 tons per manshift using an l8-cubic yard dragline to uncover the lignite. Delivered cost to LCRA, F.O.B. mine, is $6.11 per ton, which includes water control and final reclamation.

Small-scale flotation tests have been conducted to examine the effect of froth stability on the column flotation of finely pulverized coal. The results of this study demonstrate that the upgrading of coal in a column flotation cell can be significantly improved when froth stability is properly controlled through the manipulation of appropriate operating variables. Several important correlations have been established from the test data. These relationships should prove useful for the design and ore ration of column flotation cells for fine coal processing.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. The Mineral Park Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine located in northwestern Arizona, approximately 74 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The property has been owned by the Duval Corporation, Cyprus Mining Company and Equatorial Mining of Australia. Mercator purchased Mineral Park from Equatorial in 2003. Mineral Park commissioned a 25,000 tpd copper and molybdenum concentrator in November and December of 2008. The process includes two stage milling (SAG and Two Ball Mills) fed by primary crushed ore. Metals are recovered in a copper-molybdenum flotation circuit consisting of mechanically agitated roughers and cleaners. The copper- molybdenum flotation concentrate is thickened and further processed in the molybdenum flotation circuit which separates the copper and molybdenum minerals into salable concentrates. The molybdenum circuit also uses mechanically agitated cells. This paper describes the plant and some of the highlights of the commissioning process.

The Getchell Mine is located in Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 70 km northeast of Winnemucca. Slope management has been a critical factor in the feasibility of mining operations since they began in the early 1930's. Although underground entries began in 1937, underground production was limited because hanging walls consisting of clay gouge and crushed rock tended to collapse into the workings. Controlling these collapses required extensive timbering. Due to these poor ground conditions, surface open-pit mining was the primary mode of production from 1938 to 1967 with only minor contributions from underground operations. Mining was suspended in 1967 due to economic pressures. From 1960 to 1967, the previous operator mined the property in three open pits. Initially, these pits were constructed with footwall benches, but these failed. These failures were aggravated by construction of 60° slopes in footwalls with shale partings dipping into the pit at 43° to 60°, resulting in large planar failures and wedge failures. In response, the previous operator adopted a slope parallel to the bedding planes.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.
