Novel and innovative mining methods are attracting the attention of mining engineers at an unprecedented level. Historically, the US mining industry has responded rather conservatively to new technology. The financial difficulties affecting the domestic mining industry in the early 1980s changed attitudes toward new technology. The market contraction during that period, coupled with an expanding world mine capacity, created a serious oversupply of many raw mineral products. Many mining companies found that retaining a share of world markets while making a profit required drastic cost-cutting measures.

The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

A PC-based simulation model using the software packages SIMAN and CINEMA was developed to simulate and animate truck-shovel operations. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. Statistical analyses were performed, and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an optimal dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between the quality and quantity of production.

Jim Walter Resources Blue Creek No. 3 Mine was opened in one of the most gassy coal beds in the United States. Although face ventilation requirements exceeded 14,000 cfm (6 .6m3/s) air, continuous miner sections experienced an unacceptable frequency of frictional ignitions. Modifications offered primarily by the U. S. Bureau of Mines such as diffuser fans, water spray fans, and slow speed cutting motors were used with little success. However, laboratory tests conducted at the U. S. Bureau of Mines indicated that an increase in bit attack angle from 50° to 55°-57° significantly reduced the chances of the bit causing a frictional ignition. An experimental miner drum was built using this concept coupled with a new bit designed by the Bureau and manufactured by Hughes Tool Company that better protected the bit steel shank with a carbide cap. It was installed on a continuous miner and placed in an area of the mine prone to ignitions. 50,000 tons (45,500 metric tons) of coal were cut without a frictional ignition. When the miner was withdrawn for rebuild and a machine with an unmodified cutting drum placed in service, two ignitions occurred before 10,000 tons (9,100 metric tons) were mined. Other machines have been rebuilt and are in service, and to date none have been known to cause an ignition.

The title of this paper is "Designing Very Large Bio-oxidation Plants". To our knowledge, only one such plant has been designed and built to date, and that is U.S. Gold's Tonkin Springs plant in Nevada. This plant was commissioned in Spring of 1990 and operated for a short time successfully as a bio-leach plant but U.S. Gold did not have the financial strength to overcome the consequences of construction delays and increased capital cost. The plant has temporarily been 1 put on a standby basis. Recently, < > a potential joint venture between Tonkin Springs Gold Mining Company and Homestake Mining was announced. Homestake will operate the mine with the technology and subsequent improvements would be co-owned by both companies. This paper is not a "how to" type publication because we feel that such an approach could be dangerous if used improperly. Rather, we discuss some of the important aspects of process selection, testing and design that need attention, and some of the lessons learned to date. As with all developments, improvements and new knowledge will accrue as more companies use bio-oxidation technology. The Tonkin Springs plant is fair evidence that bio-oxidation has "arrived" as a technology, and that successful design and operation of plants treating greater than 1000 t/d of feed is possible.

As the first wave of precious metal heap leach closures and reclamation projects occur, a number of companies are being hit with costly surprises. While this paper refers specifically to U.S precious metal projects, it could be conceptually directed at copper leach operations and acid rock drainage (ARD) problems on an international basis. ARD is Mother Nature&apos;s version of heap leaching, only with different products and timing. Although many precious metal deposits tend to be small in comparison with some base metals systems (porphyry copper deposits), adjacent or nearby discoveries have extended the operating lives of numerous precious metal mines. Now, depleted reserves, several years of relatively depressed precious metals prices and some properties with technical difficulties have resulted in numerous mine closures. As a result, our industry is getting a diverse and comprehensive initial look at mine closure and final reclamation. The situation has been further complicated by the evolutionary trend in regulations and their enforcement and increasing public and political awareness of all environmental issues. Concurrent (proactive) vs. deferred (reactive) reclamation and a realistic early appraisal of ultimate reclamation and closure requirements, not just regulatory compliance, need to be a part of project design. The U.S. and Canada are the current fertile testing grounds and have set the design, regulation and closure standards for the next wave of operations in Latin America, the CIS (?), etc.

Precious gold and silver markets support substantial activity in the search for and development of improved and unconventional ore and tailing processing methods. The need for such methods 1s strengthened by consideration of increasingly low grade and refractory ores and old tailing reserves. As background for this review of new and unconventional precious metal processing, recent USBM data (1981) show annual world gold production of about 40.8 million troy ounces. In the U.S. about half the 2.8 million ounce consumption was used for jewelry and the arts, 39 percent for industry, and 8 percent for dental purposes. World silver production in 1981 was about 365 million ounces. Domestic usage the same year was about 117 million ounces. More than $ was used for photography and 30 percent for electrical and electronics. By process, about 1 percent of U.S. production of gold came from amalgamation, 66 percent from cyanidation, 31 percent from smelting ores and concentrates, and 2 percent from placers. As for silver, about 11 percent is from cyanidation and 89 percent from smelting ores and concentrates. Evidently the search for innovative and unconventional precious metal processes must include gravity concentration, froth flotation, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods. Although smelting processes are equally important, they largely comprise nonferrous metal technology, and are not discussed here.

The current U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is addressing the recovery of flake graphite from kish, a steelmaking waste product, and the use of zeolites from abundant domestic natural deposits for efficiently cleaning up mining industry wastewater. The United States is almost totally dependent on imports for its graphite needs, but this may change depending upon the results from a pilot plant being constructed by industry using Bureau technology. Standard mineral processing techniques were applied by the Bureau to recover high-quality flake graphite from kish. It was considered innovative enough to receive an R&D 100 Award in 1992, and its commercialization has the potential to supply the total U.S. demands for graphite many times over. Zeolites have ion exchange properties similar to ion exchange resins, but are less expensive and available in large quantities. Samples of naturally occurring zeolites were tested for their efficiency in removing metal ions from synthetic and industrial waste solutions. The tests focused on defining their selecting, loading, eluting, and regenerating characteristics, and on developing a method for recovering the metal ions as added value products. The results showed that the removal of metal ions with zeolites from acid rock drainage (ARD) solutions is technically feasible and that this technique has the potential for being used in an integrated chemical treatment systems approach either as a primary or secondary cleaning step.

The three-dimensional finite element technique combined with a progressive failure approach were used to simulate stress distributions in a complete mine section that occur in response to a longwall mining operation. Due to the availability of a Cray supercomputer, a large-scale, three-dimensional, finite-element model was developed for the analysis. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which describes a realistic behavior of rock masses, was used for the simulation of progressive failure. A comparison of calculated and monitored stresses in the mine has shown that the model gives a good representation of stresses in the mine structure.

Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. The U.S. test on a double drum shearer showed slightly lower reduction.

A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

During the past few years, the first stage of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, (WIPP) which consists of an exploratory shaft, a ventilation shaft, shaft stations, access drifts and test rooms, has been under construction. Construction of the first stage is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 1983. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is constructing the WIPP facility to demonstrate the feasibility of disposing of defense-related nuclear waste in the bedded salt deposits of the Delaware Basin near Carlsbad, N.M. The project promises to be a proving ground for underground nuclear waste storage facility design and construction. The completed underground plant will extend over an area of 647,500 m2 (160 acres), and 1,360,500 metric tons (1,500,000 tons) of salt will be excavated. The first stage of the project, the Site and Preliminary Design Validation (SPDV) Program, provides for full-scale construction of the major components of the underground facility. Shaft construction and underground development are described. Rock bolt installation is performed as required for roof control. Geotechnical instrumentation is installed to monitor the behavior of underground openings. Direct observation of the constructed shafts, shaft stations, and underground openings is expected to confirm the adequacy of the underground design and allow full-scale construction of the first U.S. underground nuclear waste storage facility to proceed.

Liquid-solids separation is common to practically all mineral and coal processing as the bulk of beneficiation plants employ water as the major processing vehicle. The growing usage of hydrometallurgy has increased the importance of liquid-solid separation as acidic and basic solutions result in greater amounts of colloidal solids, with their consequent greater difficulty of separation, the economic need for chemical recovery to minimize this operating cost, and the usual necessity of employing more costly construction materials. The three processing steps covered in this section have significant capital costs. Drying, particularly, has an important operating cost because of the obvious need for energy to evaporate the water or solvent. Several common factors influence all three liquid-solid separation steps. Particle Size and Size Distribution. In general, finer particles have slower settling and filtration rates. The specific surface area is increased, which means a lower solids concentration in the thickener underflow and discharged filter cake as well as a grater moisture content to be evaporated in the drying step. Therefore, overgrinding or excessive attrition should be avoided. Consideration should be given to optimum particle size consistent with entire plant operation performance and recovery. Solids Concentration. Increased feed solids concentration will generally minimize required equipment size and costs in all three liquid-solid separation steps. Most thickeners are designed on the basis of unit area required, expressed as square feet per short ton of dry solids per day (square meters per metric ton per day) which will usually decrease with increased feed solids concentration. Filtration rates also increase as the required flow through the capillaries of the filter cake decreases. Dryer capacity increases and less energy per ton of final product is required to evaporate the associated moisture. Particle Shape and Surface Characteristics. Generally, optimum shape is a spherical particle of zero porosity. As either of these factors degrade away from the desired state, difficulty increases. This is particularly true in drying, where porosity can decrease drying rate significantly if the moisture must first reach the particle surface by diffusion

In recent years exploration and development of low-grade sulfide precious metal ore deposits has increased. Low- grade ores are usually processed using conventional heap leach cyanidation methods. The potential for acid mine drainage from spent sulfide ore heap leached residues remains a concern even though the processed residue is stacked on an impervious liner system. It is therefore of critical importance to evaluate methods for long term prevention of acid mine drainage from sulfide heap leachable ores during the precious metal recovery process rather than mitigation during the closure and reclamation phase. This paper discusses two simple AMD prevention options for the recovery process phase. Laboratory evaluations were made using a modified humidity cell kinetic AMD test method on two low-grade sulfide ores without addition of an alkaline component and on the same ores with natural limestone or acid neutralizing oxide ore blended with the feeds before kinetic testing. Laboratory results are discussed in detail and demonstrate that blending an acid neutralizing component with sulfide ore effectively prevents the production of acid from the processed residue.

The quest for U.S. energy independence will result in a major increase in underground mining operations. It will necessitate the rapid excavation of development drifts, entries and slopes to exploit underground deposits of energy resources such as coal, uranium and oil shale. Most of this development work will be done in soft and medium hard rock up to an unconfined compressive strength of approximately 20, 000 psi. OBSTACLES TO RAPID TUNNEL EXCAVATION Labor In the U. S. coal mining industry, the underground productivity in tons per man-day declined from 15. 61 in 1969 to 11. 00 in 1973 which is a startling 30% decline. While productivity declines, the cost of labor and supplies continues to rise. Ralph E. Bailey of Consolidation Coal Company recently stated four reasons for the decline of productivity: A shortage of experienced miners, enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act effective April 1970, major changes in union work rules in 1968, and a deterioration in the attitude of the work force (1). Because there is already a great shortage of skilled miners, the situation will get worse when large new mines for oil shale, coal and uranium open in sparsely populated areas in the Western United States. Only the large scale use of easy to operate tunneling machines can increase productivity and lower the cost of excavation.

This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

OUTLOOK FOR COAL UTILIZATION In 1975, about 650 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States was used to meet 55% of the primary energy input for electric power generation and 26% of the total industrial consumption.1 Even though this amounts to only 21% of the total energy requirements, it is believed that with the declining natural gas resources and uncertainty of liquid fuel imports, coal will assume a more dominant role in suppplying our future energy needs. A regional breakdown of the coal reserves of the United States along with their characteristics is shown in Table I. At present the United Stares Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) are financing extensive research programs in advanced mining methods and energy conversion processes. The increased demand for wal which may result from these research programs may also create large-scale environmental protection problems. As more and more coal is mined the production of undesirable coal fines and dust also increases proportionally. The USBM and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research in this field includes development in the areas of instrumentation for qualitative and quantitative analysis of wal dust, protective devices, and dust collectors. Dust control by water sprays, steam, and foam are also being investigated. Other aspects of safety in mining include developing methane drainage techniques prior to coal mining, fire and explosion prevention, and neutralization and disposal of acid mine waters. It is the belief of coal technologists that when the emphasis shifts to coal as the primary source of energy. the existing methods of mining and preparation of coal must be improved considerably to supply large quantities of quality coal for energy conversion. It is the objective of the present large-scale research financed by ERDA to produce substitute fuels from coal. Large-scale gasification pilot plants are being constructed by Bituminous Coal Research, Consolidation Coal Co., Institute of Gas Technology, and the Pittsburgh Energy Research Center to produce coal gas of natural gas standards at 1,000 psig. The processes being adopted by these pilot plants are oriented towards recovering most of the sulfur from coal by absorbing H2S and its subsequent conversion to elemental sulfur. The environmental protection standards will be strictly followed in using the results of these pilot plants to construct large-scale coal gasification plants in the latter part of the 1970&apos;s. With the increasing awareness of the need for air pollution control, considerable research is being done to minimize sulfur dioxide emission from thermal power plants. Utilization of limestone and dolomite scrubbing systems and caustic treatment of stack gases have proved to reduce sulfur and nitric oxide emissions by about 90 to 96%.3 Currently, about 22 scrubbers are in use in the United States to reduce sulfur in stack gas emission. In the long-term, it appears that optimal combinations will be developed involving both advanced coal preparation technology and wet scrubbing. The sulfur compounds are converted either to elemental sulfur of sulfuric acid. Besides the sulfur compounds, the major byproduct of the coal utilization industry is the large amount of coal ash. The Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University has developed a practical use for coal ash as a structural material. The coal industry will undergo revolutionary changes when coal becomes the primary source of energy. New coal mining and preparation processes will be introduced to meet the ever-increasing per capita energy requirements. 2. BENEFICATION Introduction Coal preparation, like the beneficiation of ores, is also aimed at the separation of values from associated waste. Even though the unit operations involved when enriching ores and coal are similar, there are certain characteristics unique to coal preparation. Unlike the scattered and concentrated veins of underground minera1 ores, coal is distributed uniformly and very much in abundance in the coal mines. Coal occurs as the metamorphosed sedimentary deposits of vegetable matter, while metal and mineral deposits occur in great varieties of forms, structures, and origin-from igneous to sedimentary and metamorphic. The mined coal, being much more friable than mineral ores, is subjected to less intensive size reduction operations. Ores are usually ground to a very fine size for subsequent concentration, while coal is crushed to a coarser size, since considerably less liberation is needed to achieve the desired degree of separation. Since mineral matter is to a great extent discretely distributed in coal, concentration is mainly achieved by taking advantage of differences in specific gravity between clean coal and associated waste. In general, about 90% of coal is concentrated using specific gravity separation and about 10% by froth flotation. In contrast, these operations are frequently reversed in the beneficiation of ores. In coal preparation almost all fractions separated during various stages are made use of. while large amounts of gangue material are rejected in the concentration of ores. Hence, coal generally has a much lower ratio of concentration than ores. Since ore deposits are frequently more variable and mineralogically complex than coal, beneficiation of ore may require more plant flexibility and point-to-point quality control. This characteristic difference between the mineral ores and coal is attributed to the generally used one-step processing in coal as compared to the multiple-step processing of ores. Dewatering to enhance the energy content of coal is usually considered a major unit operation. Even though thickening and filtration are common for dewatering ore concentrates and cleaned coal, vibrating centrifuges and disk filters find unique application in the coal industry for achieving these types of solid-fluid separation. In coal preparation, thermal drying is carried out in separate units at the mine. While ore concentrates are usually dried at the smelter. Although the drying of ores is seldom considered dangerous, volatile matter and combustible dust are reasons why the thermal drying of coal can be hazardous. Open air storage of ores and mined coal results in partial oxidation. Unlike the oxidation of ores, the oxidation of the pyritic and carbonaceous constituents of coal together with the heat of condensation of moisture contribute to spontaneous heating and the subsequent combustion of coal in storage. Among the other significant difference between concentration of ores and coal are the weight and capacity of processing equipment. Coal processing employs less cumbersome, higher capacity units while the beneficiation of ores usually requires much more massive and frequently lower capacity equipment. Properties of Coal Which Influence Design The widely varying and heterogeneous composition of coal, due to metamorphism, determines the preparation design and uses of the resulting products. Petrography serves as a useful system of classification to identify the coal types present and their distribution. Early

The Northside Storage Tunnel Project in Sydney includes over 20 km of TBM driven tunnels, over three km of declines and major caverns and pump rooms. The paper describes methods used for design on the project. Emphasis is given to the refinement of the use of empirical rock mass classifications, and to the use of discontinuum numerical methods. The use of empirical rock mass classifications in Sydney sandstone has usually led to conservative design because the systems are based on a random orientation of joints in the rockmass. Because the joint sets are usually oriented in a way that is beneficial for tunnelling, limits must be placed on the parameters used in the classifications system. The paper discusses these limits and the derivation of the parameters. The use of numerical methods in Sydney sandstone is discussed. Continuum methods have their uses, but discontinuum methods are preferred. The use of UDEC has been validated against a previous project, the New Southern Railway. Recommendations are given for UDEC models. In Sydney&apos;s geology, so advantageous for tunnelling, the challenges of this project have been to make the best use of the good conditions, while maintaining safety for the workforce and the future operators of the project.

Tabling is an old environmentally friendly separation unit operation. This paper models shaking tables and explores the action and design of riffles on shaking tables. By reassessing riffle shape and riffle patterns, significant improvements in tabling performance appear feasible. While table sales appear at their nadir, a high-tech environmentally friendly table may have a significant market in the coming decade. Riffles on a shaking table impact particle separation. Particles are affected by riffles and their exit position on the table is dramatically changed, Riffle shape determines how much the riffle will influence a given material. Moreover, riffle patterns influence the concentration of a given material and its exit points on a table. This effect of riffle placement and design is modeled in a spreadsheet. Major performance and separation improvements may he expected by improved table design. Two physical laws of tabling have been derived. These laws aid in the design of sophisticated high-tech tables.

Both On-Line and Off-Line optimization procedures have been employed by industry, assisted either by operators or by digital computers. In every case, dollar benefits have accrued.
